Rep. Sharice Davids: The First LGBTQ Native American in Congress

"So in your children's book called assurances big voice in right that when you think about winning your first election one of the things you think about is. How amazing is that you won but also that you even tried to win. Can you talk about that second part. The fact that you even tried to win why that's amazing to you. I feel like i have a life experience. That's not necessarily unique being raised by single parent working. While i was in school there are quite a few of my experiences that i feel safer just not uncommon experiences but they certainly at least growing out probably shaped what i imagined. I would be doing as an adult. Or what scope of opportunities or abilities were. It just didn't ever crossed my mind. That i might one day be running for congress. I mean you mentioned your education. I've a question about that. Actually you went to cornell for law school but before that you attended haskell indian nations university university of kansas johnson county community college and the university of missouri. Kansas city was trying to figure out like what you wanted to do. Was that financial. Like explain all those undergrads. It was a combination of all those things i think. Definitely some of it was financial. Johnson county community colleges one of the best community colleges in the country and says very fortunate to be living in the place. Where john's county community college at haskell indian nations university is in addition to the to the cost. It doesn't cost that much to go there but the experience of going to school with other native folks was very appealing to me and then some of it was that i just didn't know what i wanted to do. I feel like it was a combination of all of those things. I mean many part of your identity makes you stand out in congress. But i also have to assume that not. Many people have community college on their resume in congress. Yeah i think there's more now than there's ever been before. I remember talking to john hayes about it. I'm fairly certain that john hayes who you know before she came to congress was the teacher of the year at one point. I'm pretty sure that she went to community college as well

Black Sparrow and Buffalo Soldiers

"Since colonial times African Americans have fought in America's wars. In every war in fact, The first person to die in the revolutionary. War Christmas attics was black. Black soldiers have put their lives on the line for a country that for centuries enslaved segregated and discriminated against them. Until the Korean War black served in segregated units under racist leadership and often relegated to labor and service units. Despite the continuous discriminatory treatment that denied blacks full participation in America's military efforts, these brave men and women lived lives that deserve to be remembered. My Name's Moxy and this is your brain on facts. Possibly the best known all black military unit comes with a bit of mystery in its history. They were called Buffalo soldiers, though there are competing reasons as to why. In eighteen, sixty, six and active congress created six all black peacetime regiments later consolidated into four, the ninth and Tenth Cavalry and the Twenty Fourth and twenty fifth infantry. Initially the Buffalo soldier regiments were commanded by whites with being forbidden from holding the ranks officers. These. Troops often faced extreme racial prejudice from the army establishment. Many officers including George Armstrong custer of boo and a his there. Refused to command black regiments, even though it costs them promotions. Further black troops could only serve west of the Mississippi. River, because many whites didn't want to see armed black men near their communities. It even sometimes happened that the buffalo soldiers suffered deadly violence at the hands of civilians. The Buffalo soldiers main duty was to support the nation's westward expansion by protecting settlers, building roads and other infrastructure and guarding the US mail. They served a variety of posts in the southwestern great planes, taking part in most of the military campaigns during the decades long Indian wars during which they compiled a distinguished record with eighteen buffalo soldiers awarded the Medal of honor. We don't have time today to dwell on the irony of African American soldiers, fighting native people on behalf of government that accepted neither group as equals. The exceptional performance of these soldiers helped to overcome resistance to the idea of black officers paving the way for the first african-american graduate from West Point Henry O flipper. Who will hear more about later? But. Fellow soldiers played significant roles in many other military actions. They took part in defusing the little known eighteen, ninety two Johnson County war in Wyoming, which pitted small farmers against wealthy ranchers and a band of hired gunmen. They also fought in the Spanish American and Philippine American wars and played a key role in maintaining border security during the high intensity, military conflict along the US Mexico border during the Mexican revolution. In Nineteen Eighteen, the tenth cavalry fought at the Battle of ambos Nogales where they assisted enforcing the of the Mexican federal and militia forces. Discrimination played a role in diminishing the buffalo soldiers involvement in upcoming major conflicts. During world. War One the racist policies of President Woodrow Wilson among whose claims to infamy include segregating federal offices led to black regiments, being excluded from the American Expeditionary Force, and placed under French command for the duration of the war. The first time ever that American troops were placed under the command of a foreign power. Then prior to World War Two, the ninth and Tenth Cavalry Regiments were essentially disbanded, and most of their troops moved to service roles. However the Ninety Second Infantry Division known as the Buffalo Division did see combat during the invasion of Italy while another division that included the original Buffalo Soldiers of the twenty fifth infantry. N.F.L. Declines to Suspend Tyreek Hill After Domestic Violence Investigation

"The Kansas City chiefs have dealt with domestic violence with a few different players. But without a doubt right now the most prominent is star wide receiver tyreek Hill. I can you tell me about tyreek hill as a player and what he brings to the chiefs. Offense tyreek Hill is one. One is the most dynamic exciting explosive most fun to watch players in the NFL. He's very small wide receiver. If you were to Stanek some at the grocery store you wouldn't look at the sky and say wow he's an NFL player but when you get them on the football field key is arguably faster than anybody anybody else in the NFL. What he's able to do when he gets the ball in his hands and space weather? That's catching a pass from Patrick mahomes down the middle of the field. The Thai Rico. Taking jet sweep out of the backfield or catching a punt or kickoff return kill to the outside electrify in for the touchdown. He's one of the most exciting players in the NFL and he's expected to play a major role in the super bowl on on Sunday Probably being guarded by Richard Sherman. Can you describe what the matchup with the niners is GonNa look like yet. It should be a really great matchup between tyreek Hill and Richard Chairman. Who is the star? Cornerback for the San Francisco. Forty niners and one of the most interesting XS. and Os schematic thing. That's going on right now. Is How the chiefs are GonNa find ways to get tyreek hill away from Richard Sherman. Because they don't WanNa throw against Richard Sherman so the goal will be to find ways to get the ball to tyreek hill. Line him up in different places get him the ball and creative ways so that. They're not putting him in one on one situations against one of the best. quarterbacks and football tyreek hill was making headlines even before he ever played a single. NFL Game. Can you tell us about his college career and the incident that happened in December of two thousand fourteen yes tyreek hill kind of had a winding college football journey. He actually started at a community college and Kansas before enrolling at Oklahoma state and in his first year at Oklahoma state in two thousand fourteen he became a star immediately really because of his ridiculous speed his strength as a special teams players apart. returner this but late. In his only a year at Oklahoma state he was arrested and accused of domestic violence in an incident with his girlfriend who is twenty years old at the time and he was accused of Punching Ching her choking her and also punching her in the stomach while she was pregnant. tyreek hill was brought here to the pain county jail. His arrest comes just one week after for he was the hero of the bedlam game. So is arrest on the charge and almost immediately was dismissed from the Oklahoma State football team. He pleaded guilty into this domestic violence. Charge in addition to a battery charge and he was sentenced to three years probation. He was also instructed to go to anger management counseling to undergo domestic violence counseling. Although he was never sentenced to jail time He was able to continue his college football career when he enrolled at the university. I see of West Alabama. That's a division two school and then in April of two thousand sixteen sixty fifth in the two thousand sixteen. NFL draft against it achieves slack. Sorry Cal Wide Receiver West Alabama so it was a surprise. Actually that tyreek Hill was drafted because in in two thousand sixteen. We were still not that far removed from the Ray Rice scandal and you know tyreek Hill at kind of become kind of a poster child for a guy who got in trouble while in college in he. He was seen as one of those type of guys whose character red flags made him undrafted. He's had some issues domestic violence issue that that frankly frankly I thought might keep him from being drafted. This guy has blazing speed but the Kansas City chiefs went ahead and drafted him anyways. They drafted him in the fifth round in large part because of his forty or dash ty which was four point two nine seconds which is elite speed one of the fastest times that at any NFL players have run in years and what the reaction when he's drafted. It was pretty negative. We have to remember that. The Kansas City chiefs went through one of the most horrific horrific incidents in recent. NFL history in two thousand twelve. When one of their players linebacker named Jovan belcher killed his girlfriend and then committed suicide right in the parking lot of the chiefs training facility belcher turned one of those guns on Perkins reportedly shooting her nine times at the home? The couple shared with their three month Old Daughter the child was spared. This is a wound that was still very raw in the Kansas City community. You know very tragic senseless murder suicide aside and here the chiefs are drafting tyreek Hill player. who had pleaded guilty to very violent crime against his pregnant pregnant girlfriend and so it was? It was largely negative response especially from from female fans from the survivor community. I find that really frustrating that We're still holding up these celebrities As you know oh working on things things are getting better. We don't know what she's going through. And it's important to note that when Giovane Belcher thing happened Andy. Reid was not the head coach of the chiefs yet but he was tyreek Hill was drafted. And what's the response from from. I'm Andy Reid and from the chiefs front office when they start to see some of this backlash you know. The immediately held a press conference and tried to talk about all of the work that they had done into studying tyreek hill. Well we have our due diligence. We're regards to fooling vetting. Each one of our draft class members. They spoke to WHO His coaches and they also spoke to the prosecutors from Oklahoma in the domestic violence case and they said all right we. We believe that this guy i. I won't get in trouble again before given the opportunity for a second chancellor on the right things and so he's he's been in counseling. Continue to be in counseling. We've got a great support system here for that and that he would be a model citizen and largely for his first couple of years in Kansas City he was and despite this pushback that they're getting from fans both in Kansas City and across the country Tyreek Hill remains on the chiefs after after. He's drafted and he starts this season as punt returner. How does his rookie season go? Spectacularly from football perspective the open field. He's they're gonNA take special chance to sit in started out as kind of a wide receiver. Who is kind of buried on the Dutch art? But he was their primary punt returner and within a couple months of his rookie year. If you went to a game at Arrowhead you would see fans wearing that number ten tyreek Hill Jersey and every time that he would go back to catch a punt. You would hear in unison. Fans at Arrowhead stadium chanting tie wreak tie reek and he would feed off of it. The crowd would feed off of this energy. And you know. It didn't take long before. He became one of the most beloved players on the chiefs roster because of his football prowess and in spite of the ugly history that he had coming into the NFL and in the next few seasons go after the two thousand sixteen season so as far as football it only continued to get better for tyreek hill so as a rookie. He was primarily early. A special teams player. You know we mostly just saw him returning punts and doing a fantastic job of that. He was an all pro his rookie year. But you know after that first season he became the chiefs number one wide receiver. They moved him from a special teams roll into a role where he was going to be a major part of their offense and he handled that Smith winds up getting Franch Kansas City. He exceeded everybody's expectations as a wide receiver. She became at that point. The most important piece in the chiefs offense and then in March of last year tyreek Hill is back in the news with new allegations of child abuse. tyree kills three year. Old Son suffered a broken arm in March of Twenty nineteen. And how this this child broke his arm. That is the big question and that was what investigators in Kansas where tyreek hill his fiancee. The mother of his son were living living and ultimately nobody has determined how the child suffered this broken arm in April after about a month of investigation the district attorney in Johnson County. Kansas Released a statement that while he believed a crime had been committed they did not have evidence that can conclude Who who the perpetrator was? So that meant that it could have been tyreek hill. It could have been his fiancee. It could have been a caregiver a short time later. The case from a criminal perspective respective was ruled inactive the NFL's investigation and the Department of Children Family Services. Their investigations continued however and then the day after the district attorney in Kansas declines to press charges audio between Hill and his fiancee is released. What you'd rather him somehow or he fell one of the two? Then why does say deputy. Why Oh and just to clarify for listeners? Be Fiance Crystal. That he's talking to on this recording is the same woman that he pled guilty to abusing in college. Yes initially in April liberal part of this audio recording released and it was very damaging to tyree count. You could hear tyreek Hill could parading his fiancee. You know using threatening language is terrified of you and you say that he respects you but it's not it's not respect it's terrifying. He is terra of we need to be terrified of and the immediate reaction to that in the media from from kind of within the NFL world was how could they not charge him. After this month's later the full audio recording was released which you know didn't didn't necessarily tyreek Hill in a better light but it kind of even out the conversation a little bit reports he wrote. And if you want to rewind that night we can rewind that night to my house and pick you up and slam you know picked up and put out on my door and after that you've built bruises come from tyree waited the bruises. Come Out I'm asking. Where did the bruises come out to hit Youtube? You too and it was full audio recording that I believe is really the key piece of evidence for the NFL that led the NFL to their decision. To not ultimately punished honest. I recall after this investigation.

"For the second time we have a teacher in this case in Johnson County who authorities there there was a case last week and now we find out a second teacher basically didn't have any of the teaching credentials for education that they claimed I'm how how does that happen I I guess I would assume if because teachers are certified there's certain amount of training that these districts are looking for in many instances like most jobs we don't think check what is your track to make sure that when you're ready to roll if they claim they do okay yeah I think people I think some of these systems are desperate you know they're desperate to find teachers get a resume looks good T. yoga there's one mark and check off the box but there's got to be some checks and balances here you know we try to get a background check a you know kind of a comprehensive background check bill through for years we haven't been able to fully do that we need a system in place for everybody across the board can talk to each other where the rat actually and in in print full transparency that anybody that any teacher that's coming and going and see for instance we know of instances where teachers have been fired or call has been one district and then they walk across the street into the next district and they get hired and nobody called the other district to find out the why the person was like over whether coming to them I mean that's just ludicrous I mean there is there can be a human resources system set in place throughout you know run by TPI that is confidential doesn't have the name people's names and all that kind of thing but it can at least give some background information and then to the hiring process firing processes and so forth the teacher so that the next system can know what they're getting into I yeah I'm I'm assuming in the world because your background is architecture I'm assuming that there's certain licensure or certifications are something that goes along with what should I know nothing about it is you can tell from this question but ultimately those are things that are pretty easy to check if you had to climb back in the day who wanted to check right they could see if your firm was good to go for yeah yeah absolutely yeah you're you're a licensed architect you don't get your stamp you know you can't stamp drawing unless you unless you have that and obviously the first time somebody comes along and says a step aside a drawing for your Camaro but yeah you know I mean yeah there's checks and balances there for teachers by a little bit different you know I think people you know people lie on the resumes of times and unless you're going in and actually doing a background check you're not gonna knock a figure that out for for for for fresh for professionals it's a little bit different you know doctors architects and and lawyers and accountants and the like all right lastly in a let you go I'm there's no we had yesterday another person's "There were hundreds of people standing in line. Absolutely. That's Cindy rap. She's a democratic member on the Johnson county election board the county votes using electronic voting machines. But they weren't what caused the issue. The problem was with the systems poll workers for using check people in the called electronic poll books. They move the check in process from the big book of names that used to be in to a laptop computer or tablet. But like in all aspects of the elections world. There are big questions about security and reliability. When you switch from paper records to electron ones, equal books are often connected to the internet, and that makes them significantly more vulnerable to a cyber attack than paper records at this point, there are no federal regulations or even voluntary guidelines for how these eople books need to work, which means a lot of the stuff that happens to cross the T's dot the i's, a regular voting system, certification to make sure it's suitable for election. Just don't happen. Joe hall is the senior technologist for the center for democracy and technology. I asked him and his colleague Murray, Turner to look over the third party report of what happened in Johnson county and walk me through it. There were a number of issues. I the company in charge of maintaining the poll books didn't provide enough bandwidth for the election day crowd, that caused the public's to slow down to the point where they were barely working wraps. His poll workers weren't able to give frustrated voters answers. And there's no one voting on the machine. So they know it's not the, you know, always can say, though, it's. Computer, and people worked happy people had to leave and go to work to get around the problem. The company maintaining the system, basically disconnected, the poll books from each other in Johnson county voters can cast their ballot at any polling place, but the pool books have to be able to communicate. So people don't vote twice to get over the technical hurdle. The company disabled that security feature had voters wanted to vote twice in Johnson county at different locations. They could have here's Murray Turner from the center for democracy and technology would be like if someone was going to the airport in a Gotcha. Check checkpoint. Then all of a sudden, those lines were overloaded, if you just turn off all military, obviously, you can get people through which quickly. But the more security do it is actually to open up more lines with more melody sectors Johnson county terminated their contract with the company after election day, and they're going to use a different company going forward. But what happened? There was an example of how much have it can be caused with a hitch in this part of the voting system. Even though these machines don't actually affect election, tallies election supervisor say, they do offer huge benefits, especially faster check in times, so much less work, and so much more accurate really than doing things by hand. That's connecticut. Secretary of state Denise Merrill, four years ago, she got her state's legislature to provide money to get electric pobox for every voting jurisdiction in the state, her office took proposals from companies hoping to provide the technology and she took them to the university of Connecticut's voting technology center for recommendations. They came back to us and said, we don't feel comfortable with any of these being entirely secure. So Merrill, didn't let local fficials use state money to buy, the technology, but she's optimist. The products will improve in general. She worries about jumping into this technology to quickly but it's like anything elections there's a risk reward ratio. I guess I'd say and no, I don't think there has been a thorough conversation of the risks inherent, but and also the benefits. Of electronic books. The thing is, Merrill, says once governments have spent.

"Chain. Oh disturbing audio release this week of Kansas City star wide receiver tyreek hill talking with his fiancee, crystal Espinel about him allegedly abusing their three year old son. And now, the Johnson county district attorney in Missouri plans to take another look launched criminal investigation in March after their son suffered a broken arm later. The Johnson county district attorney announcing they would not press charges. We believe that a crime has occurred. However, the evidence in this case does not conclusively establish who committed this crime. The recording was given to the local TV station by Espino, she allegedly called the tape in insurance policy hill does not admit to breaking his son's arm. But the team has consumed that ABC's Zachary quiche the chiefs have suspended hill from all team.

"Radio and the ESPN app that did not take long, even though the cancer. Chiefs have not suspended tyreek hill the NFL has not been able to step in yet. But since audio emerged last night regarding wide receiver tar heel the cancer chiefs. The prosecute in Johnson county Kansas is doing something. According to Casey TBN, Kansas City. The criminal case Colonel case arising from the Angie suffered by the three year old son of hill and his fiancee aid has been reopened. I'm not surprised that they reopened it. But why did it take this for the investigators to reopen this involving tyreek hill? I don't think the question really is why why did they reopen it? Now, why was the audio not given to them to start? That's fair. It's not if they have evidence to move forward. The case understand why they did not pretty here's what we forget a little bit in this situation. Is that this happens all the time? Unfortunately, right. There's domestic violence incidents there where where you don't have a lot of the time to is the person who got who got beat on to talk about if they don't wanna do it. The can't press charges. Right. It's happened a lot in and those cases get dropped in this case because of the high profile nature the DA had to basically give public statements say not normally this just go away. And so I'm not surprised reopened the case because of the audio because now you have to voices talking about possible child abuse, and we have evidence. Now, you don't even talk to each other about it. I mean can be rat on each other. You have evidence of in front of you. And so I'm not surprised that we opened it. What has been for tyreek hill? He's gone. I mean, he he's the chiefs draft replacement today hardman around out of Georgia. And I thought they would do this draft replacement for tyreek hill before this happened. I wrote about this back in January. I think it would be maybe in the second round. But they would look at replacing him at someone because if there has to pay Taibbi of money, I know people say, I'm crazy. But if you look at the structure of the chief to pay mom's pretty soon, Chris Jones, pretty soon, you're paying Kelsey you're paying walk ins Clark. Frank clark. You're playing the left tackle the, right? Tackle the right guard like your pay all these guys a lot of money. The Honey badger you need to go get yourself. Another. Like, you have a lot of places you can try to find yourself another tyreek hill, but. We talked about this last night. When I heard what he said, I've heard the audio. It's the scuffing vile. I have kids say may just heartbreaking to hear someone talk about plus kid in that manner and the chiefs had every right to release him in my opinion or should have released him maybe earlier than hearing the audio. The audio was privately court conversation, obviously. Right. Yeah. They should have released him beforehand. This is now an extra step into into the kind of evidence building if you're if you're the chiefs looking to replace him. And now here we are in the chiefs are going to release them just a matter of when they're going to do it. I don't know what they're waiting for me probably attorneys. Evolve. Trying to figure things out that way. But he's gone out of just what's if it's on, Freddie. Freddie and Fitz Symington ESPN radio in case, you have not heard the audio involving tyreek hill and his fiancee about what kind of discipline tyreek hill handed. "Eight-odd Shandor Osher the NFL not happy by any means. I'm sure and the Kansas City Chiefs and others really not happy that the tape was leaked the night of the NFL draft. But that's the case in real world life when things happen. We can't really control when it's just dealing with the why and we had Pete sweetie on editor and chief and lead. KC chiefs writer for Arrowhead pride. You could follow Pete on Twitter at PG swing when the tyreek hill stuff I came out. And Pete was all over this ahead of this. Gave us the necessary. Specifics about the story that weren't really being reported both in and outside of Kansas City. So we go right back to you Pete because you informed, our audience tenfold the first time around in. This thing is not good. It does not sound good. Both on the tape and subsequently what the Kansas City. Chiefs have done eight times Shandor espionage in radio. Appreciate you. Joining us on the progressive phone line tonight. Pete it looks like the latest and we can start. There is the chiefs have done everything possible to distance themselves from tyreek hill. At this point the word suspension wasn't used but they outright said that for the foreseeable future. Tyreek hill will not be partaking in team activities. And I look at with situation. There was audio release tonight. I mean, if you want to go into the details, I was able to transcribe at Arrowhead pride dot com. But it's not good. I mean, just. Earlier this week. He the district attorney of Johnson county in in Kansas City had said that a crime was committed against tyreek hill fiancee's, crystal Espinel, son. But the problem was there wasn't enough evidence to figure out who committed the crime. So that are ready turns your stomach a little bit. And then with this audio following up with the candidate or Perry thought it appeared or sounded as if Tariq's thought they were candid and just to hear it. And and you know, what this guy's gone through in the chiefs sort of taking a chance on him it with with some past. I it just it didn't paint a good picture of hill. And as you heard tonight with she's general manager, Brad v-chip the chaser. Now distancing themselves from really one of the better wide receivers in the National Football League. Yeah. A couple of ways we can go here. Let's start. With how we got here because last time you, and I spoke on the show the information that wasn't really being reported that you did correctly was that he wasn't even a person of interest. Right. Like there was or wasn't even any charges or anything along those lines. So how do we get from there to here? Yeah. The last time we talked. I mean, I was trying to try trying to go right down the middle with this thing and go by the book, it really seems at least from the information that we had prior to this case that you really couldn't say with certainty that high Rica was involved because there was no charge. And then I think what changed drastically was earlier this week when we got the crest conference from the district attorney and Kansas City, and I think the the point that hit home this this week was him saying, yes, a crime was committed. And then what was so? So disturbing about that is he also said, yeah. But we couldn't charge anyone because we didn't know who did it. And I think everyone at that point assumes that it's between tyreek and crystal Espinel. And then you know, you look at the NFL player the NFL player either hurt this child or they're covering four their signify. Cont- other wreck significant other whatever it may be who hurt this child. So either way it just leaves a bad taste in your mouth..

"But even then I think it it Hughes read with regards to that one of our listeners. Thurston tweeted, would you say that Kansas is much more purple than the deep red that the coasts and the media often think of I would say Kansas is still largely read, but with some blue pockets indefinitely, some purple pockets of one thing as she brought up the Kansas City metropolitan area that's trending blue. And I think you saw that with cherise David's election. You saw that with how well governor Kelley performed in the Kansas City metro area and actually down across the ballot. Democrats won all of the statewide races in Johnson county, which Johnson county was traditionally a Republican leaning area. It was a suburban kind of country club Republican area. But. That is certainly starting to trend to a bit more democratic during the the Trump era. There was a real rejection of co Bach and Israel rejection of of of Kevin Yoder. So I would say that area is trending blue. Which is just it. You know, it buffers Missouri, which had a blue district, Missouri. You have some pockets of blue in Wichita and Pika, and certainly Lawrence Kansas, very blue. But overall, the state has is very read with regards to governor Kelley governing with the legislature. That is dominated by Republicans. There are eleven governors in this position right now President Obama was in this position during his final two years. I wonder what we learned from governor Kelley that might inform how those other eleven how those other governors might govern particularly because she strikes me as really content in her spaces a policy wonk as kind of a pragmatic policy thinker as opposed to a more ideological. Vision driven candidate. I mean in education funding, obviously, it it has dominated. Every Kansas legislative session that I've seen. I almost feels like it's dominated Kansas since the beginning of time education funding, I would say her plan on education funding was much more moderate than a lot of Democrats or even the school districts her base in the education advocacy, community it, I mean that it's it's worth noting that there were some Democrats who were against her plan because it didn't go far enough. But that was a way she was able to get Republican lawmakers on board. Also, the fact that she is in way the way that she is pursuing Medicaid expansion of going through the legislature is very key. There is some grayness here the Affordable Care Act gave governors the ability to unilaterally pursue Medicaid expansion. However during the Brownback years the legislature passed a Bill which governor Brownback signed into law requiring the governor to seek legislative approval. And she is adhering. To that. And she is trying to finalize in the legislature to do that, even as even as Republican leaders themselves are very much against that. Yeah. Why is that because there have been some more conservative states that have decided to expand Medicaid in their states? What's the hold up in Kansas? It's I think it's it's at this point. It's become a little bit of a wedge issue. It's I mean, it's, but one thing that's worth noting their rural hospitals in Kansas that have closed and those hospitals point to the failure to expand, Medicaid as one of the reasons, that's one reason why there is a groundswell. And I mean, she she leaned into that issue more. So than the the democratic candidate who had ran into fourteen who largely avoided it because you know, at that point ObamaCare was very kind of toxic political thing that she leaned into that as one of her key promises, but for for the Republicans who oppose it there the business. This community in Kansas is still. Is still against the the Kansas chamber of commerce and groups like that. And so it somewhat of a base issue..

"Nation in education we we have here that is something that is on the at the forefront of a lot of people's minds and then health care is another big issue you know just making sure that folks are getting covered have access to healthcare and an even when they have insurance you know having access to affordable healthcare good affordable healthcare and then you know like a lot of places around the country i imagined you know we are having a lot of conversations now at what i consider to be the intersection of education and public health because you know we have a lot of like a lot of places we had a march nut too long ago where a lot of young people are coming out and talking about their concerns and being very engaged in very active in so that's something that actually has been a huge part of the conversation these days i mean of course there are a lot of issues that people generally care about i know there's a quite a bit of conversation around immigration comprehensive immigration reform in all also protecting dreamers in making sure that they've that they're being they're being considered right now the inaction from congress on a lot of this stuff is disconcerting to a lot of people part of why through my name in the hat because i am not satisfied with the inaction in congress so that's in in terms of issues and then for demographics johnson county and wyandotte county are have a lot of different demographics so why dot county is is much more diverse in terms of racial and ethnic makeup and then johnson county is less diverse in terms of racial and ethnic makeup.

"I competed in mixed martial art i have it's interesting that i it's funny because martial arts has been such a big part of my life and when i do my my quick intro that i didn't mention it is funny i started doing martial arts when i was nineteen and when i was twenty six i had my first i competed for the first time in mixed martial arts and then i had two fights and then i went to law school in two thousand seven and i didn't i didn't do any mixed martial arts fights while i was in law school and then i had a few more when i got done with law school so i've had six amateur fights into professional fights i'm five and one amateur and one in one pro records that's impressive if he gets congress you can start a martial arts club in congress actually a gym that got the chance to train that for a little while that i'll probably go go work out keep working on jujitsu digits use the the the martial art of choice for me now so let's talk a little bit about the third district of kansas he said which counties it encompasses but what what are the demographics look like in the third district what are the people really concerned with their if you don't mind i'm going to start off with what people are really concerned about so the biggest thing for a long time that has consumed a lot of conversations has been education public education we've had particularly in johnson county there's been a lot of a lot of people are really proud about the highcalibre public education system we have and somebody who attended community college here in the in the district i certainly recognize how good founded.
