The UK prime minister Boris Johnson is holding high level security talks with his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi, the pair who are meeting in New Delhi, are also discussing how to strengthen trade ties between the nations. And kopp LeMond has launched an English language digital edition ahead of the French presidential election runoff on Sunday. You can find out more about it at Monaco dot com forward slash minute or by downloading tomorrow's edition of the stack. Those are the days headlines, back to you, Tom. Thank you very much indeed, Chris. Now, as we were just hearing there, in the headlines, the finale of this year's French presidential elections are almost upon us, according to the polls, Emmanuel Macron holds a decent lead over his far right challenger, marine le pen. Macron, however, isn't guaranteed victory on Sunday, and he's spending the final hours of the campaign attempting to whoo, France's left wing voters. I'm joined in the studio now by Philip Malaya who's a professor in French and European politics at university college London, a Philip good afternoon. Well, I mentioned Macron isn't guaranteed victory. There are no guarantees, of course, in general elections, but it's literally a question who or whom is he trying to convince in these final few hours of campaigning. Well, first of all, you're right in saying that he's not guaranteed a victory despite a quite comfortable lead in the polls, but the poor are shifty with it. They keep moving. Think of the first round where massive transfers turn happen in the last two days. So we exactly in that window in this time frame. And the mood is volatile. They are angry voters on the left and right and far right, who might at the very last minute change their mind and decide, for instance, abstain over the pain. So yes, Macron, there's no room for complacency for Macron Y I think he's probably realizing that a bit lately in my opinion because he didn't campaign much until the televised debate on Wednesday. Yesterday he was on the camp and trail in the saint Denis was a city outside of Paris who probably one of the poorest city in Paris with a very strong ethnic minority population there. And this is a melancholy bastion, by the way. They voted emphatically for the radical left leader camp third and received a 7.7 million votes, so he's got really to tap in into that electorate. It's not a foregone conclusion because a lot of macmillan's voters have resented or resent Macron's style and also policy, some even detest him personally. So there might be a lot of substantial in lateral electorate and Melo end and desperate needs at their votes. Well, we'll come more to this sort of bigger picture about this disenfranchised electorate and the decisions that such electorates might be seen it of course here in UK and the U.S., et cetera, but just on that point about Johnny Miller, only pretty narrowly miss out on the run off this year. He hasn't endorsed Macron, but he has, as I understand it, told his supporters not to back marine le pen. That doesn't necessarily mean the same thing. Is it crucial are the semantics of melancholy endorsement or lack of crucial? Well, I wouldn't say it's an endorsement of Macron because as you rightly put it, he didn't clearly call for a Macron vert, which by the way, other leaders are on the left have done, mostly. So yes, you have to sort of read his words very carefully, and I think what he essentially said is not a single word should go to le pen, which, by the way, is probably the least he could say for someone on the radical left, considering that le pen is on the far right. But he didn't say at no point that his supporters should now cast their vote for Macron in order really to stop a possible election of lieutenant, which is still a possibility as we speak. So yet he's been criticized for that and if there's a very narrow result or if some kind of catastrophe happened on Sunday on Sunday evening, I think a lot of people will remind me of his lack of clarity in this respect. Philippe I saw a really interesting set of graphics this week and it was showing France by department and it had the proportion above 20% voting for far right candidates. This is going right back to the 1990s. With where it's over 20% in a darker blue. And the map had some flecks of blue back in sort of mid 90s, a few more. It faded away significantly, I think, three general elections ago, but the last few the direction of travel has been very clear and now it's very blue, very much across the country. Is that an expression of support from the French working classes, for far right candidacy, or is it rather an expression of their dissatisfaction, much more broadly with the whole political spectrum? Well, it's a very difficult question in a crucial question. I think political scientists work on France really have been wondering about that. I would say that it's more of the latter IE it's more a sign of dissatisfaction and is affiliation with mainstream parties if you think of the phase of the once to dominant parties in France on the center of the socialist and on central right letting people in. Who are in freefall, you know, the result in the first one were absolutely catastrophic. I think it's more that, and I think when you look at what kind of electorate is now voting for Philippe and it's really a sort of impoverished working class but also why color workers, I think she's made some gains into that electorate, who live in kind of the suburban areas, or small towns, you know, areas where you have the traditional problems of lack of public services, unemployment, and of course she's really, she really benefits from that kind of electorate, which is on the whole wide and who lives in areas which are not mixed from an ethnic point of view. And of course, that's an electorate to probably has a sort of is worried about their future, the future of their children. So that's very much the kind of electorate now which votes. But I think a point to remember is that working class voters in France on the whole township state, I think the number one party for the working class substantial and but of course then lupin comes next as a sort of candidate who is able now to appeal to that electorate. Well, I wanted to ask you specifically then about turnout and you've explained why it's important then. Do we have any sense of how effectively either of the two remaining candidates have galvanized supporters to turn out? Do we know is it clear who benefits most if a significant number of people do stay away or abstain? Again, hard to answer, you know, this is really, again, I have to say that because it's been a funny campaign, very different from any previous campaigns where you normally have a conservative candidate against a center left candidate. So in that case, you galvanize your side, your camp, particularly in a second round here. A lot of voters in France are going to vote by default. It's a kind of negative vote. They're going to vote mostly, particularly those on the left to stop le pen getting elected. So it's not very mobilizing if you think about it..

"You know, they didn't need to go outside of America, but it wasn't the necklaces and Johnny millers and trevino's. They were all great. I mean, everything you can play come. But it was these, you know, as I said, the main spirit ones that, and you play that wouldn't even talk to you, turn around, once I a word. Who was it that was within ear shot of you and just said out loud, I don't think foreign player was it Dave hill? Yeah. Well, one beamon was when we were going through the split from the PGA and Dave hill Sutton Chad next to me stood up in the mid 19 he said, I don't think farm plaster be allowed to play. I should sit down miserable thought. You know, I mean, what basis could you? That's why I thought they were clever. Sign things like that. And, you know, they were it was hurtful, it was it was a very, very tough, tough time. Not a time that I can look back from there. That being said, it toughened you up. You know, it made me mentally strong. It helped me make me mentally stronger. I mean, I remember driving to the airport after I won the U.S. open by 7 shots in Minnesota to shine a bus from my wife and gardener Dickinson, never said a word. That's unbelievable. Never said a single word to me. Because that's one thing I've found at any level of pro golf, amateur golf. There is a sense of at least today, camaraderie or in terms of your root for each other. You can graduate people, you know. You want to play the other person to play good and you play better. And it just did not seem like you were greeted that way for me many years. The week after the U.S. open national highway Johnstone was not a beauty. Howie Johnson. He says, oh, God. You made some putts last week didn't you? I said, Howie? I won by 7. Why the hell can't you just say, well, you know, it's not in them. It wasn't in them to be able to do that. Mean spirited is an understatement. It was it was it was rough. And I wasn't the only one that was a cat in it. You know, Bruce Devlin, Harold hanning, Gary, playa, was we were all getting Bruce crampton, we're all getting the same treatment from the same Dan Sykes. What a horrible bloody thing he was. I played with him at Doral and I'm leaving a tournament final round, teen my ball up, minding my own business on the 9 toe, which is like an island green. He said I played with Tommy Aaron here last year. He was laden and he went in the water. Clunk. And the water. And who knows? One can only think that for fun or thought it was some kind of fun, I don't know. It's sad. So you win the 69 open championship at leather, you win the 70 U.S. open that hazel teen. 1972 open championship at birkdale. And you've won two majors yet reading and hearing your quotes over the years about that close call. It's kind of heartbreaking hearing how much that had an effect on you. Where does the story of the 1972 open championship begin for you? Is it on the 71st hole or does it go before that? Well, it was muirfield. I'm sorry. Now. And obviously muirfield is the American Jackson muirfield was named after. After that one it was his favorite links and I think it might have been my favorite of all the links courses. Well, but I went there playing, you know, I'd been playing some good golf I finished third in the championship at bertell in 71, when trevino one and mister Liu finished second. I finished 5th in 70. You know, that's when I went out and 29 at saint Andrews and verdi ten and The Rain came and got washed showers in the mix, you know, for the championship, all those years, but 72, muirfield, ours and spied out plain well we were all staying at gray walls. That little hotel right there on the course. I remember Princess Margaret coming in that week and spent some time with everybody in the hotel. Silly things I remember. The brooms didn't have tea reason. But there was a big TV lounge where we were would gather. But trevino got well the HS and his county to buy him a TV. And he stayed in his room. We never saw trevino in the hotel. He stayed in his room and he had his own tally, which he gave to his county after the event. But, you know, I got off to a great start and I was right there. I mean, we were Nicholas and won the first two tournament majors of that year. And I planned with trevino and that final round and we stood on the first day and this is trevino saying to me, he said, this is remarkable while I'm going to tell you now. He says, well, one of the sections in front of him and the other 7 in front of Jack. And he's out ahead of us, obviously. He says well, he might be one of his, but he's not going to be as both..

"In at Augusta. I actually led the masters after 8 holes in the third round. I was playing with bob and Nichols and he's down is still down at coast here now. And he said, he says to me, he's often said to me, I thought you were going to win that deal. Of course I'd never done never want anything. I was, you know, 23 hours. I was on the learning curve and ultimately choked and shot 77 last round in the masters, but that same year was the year I hold him one, I want it done like master's got my tour card. One Jacksonville the following year in March, playing with Palmer, the final day, and Don January. I mean, that was bigger than the tournament being able to get it done playing with Arnold 'cause it was in the first European to win since the 20s in the United States. That was very uncommon thing at the time. No, that's it. And then I am G befriended a guy from South Africa called George Bloomberg. Who was a friend of Gary plaus and George was a multi millionaire traveled the world playing golf, and he was a director of IMG. And he suggested that he talked to somebody with regards to representing me. And of course, somebody was mount McCormack. And it was joined the 68 around that time. That I went with IMG. And I wish I'd never met mom. Come on, George Bloomberg. I mean, that's the long and the short of that story, but essentially, you know, McCormack was an opportunist. He was going global with not just golf with fashion and has cut saloons he represented all sports Jean Claude and skinned Jackie Stewart and motor racing. He was manipulative you only need to have lived through the last 50 years to see what the IMG became. And he wanted me in Europe. To attract other European sports people. And I was busy back and forth, 6, 7 times a year playing in the U.S. tour, still based in England, and wonderful club affiliation with sea island in Georgia. Which he priced me out of there, you know, he could have easily got me a condor there, and I could have earned it over 5 years, but the termination to not do that, that cancel that contract because I couldn't afford me. And I was left, you know, back and forth again traveling and never had a base here during that time. He and all his influence or young people that passed through him were all instructed to say Jacqueline belongs in Europe. And of course, meanwhile, I had my window of opportunity was ended up being a lot shorter than it could have been. He run me ragged. And I wouldn't wise enough to walk away. When I won the open, I wanted to go to a beach and contemplate life somewhere. I met with him the day after. I will never. You've got no chance going to any beaches. It says you've got to go to America. And I came up here and played four weeks and missed four cuts. I was out in champion. You know, but I was. You're exhausted. Totally. And totally spent. And if you don't turn up, mind and body. Together. I mean, anybody can turn up. But if you not there, with your mind, if your mind's not on it, and you're inspiration is not that, to do what you've got to do. You're never going to it's never going to work. So, you know, my dad was a keen golfer, it was a truck driver. Ordinary guy didn't know about. Stuff like this, I had nobody close to meet a dead. I was flying by the seat of my pants. And by the time it came to 1972, you know, I'd had enough, although I was exempt for ten years over here for custom my U.S. open went. I'd had enough and I went back to live in England and it was worth and then oh God, I could go on, but they changed the financial system went to decimalization in everything doubled overnight. The labor government got in and taxes worldwide income were 83% for me, and I went to live in this island of Jersey. Which is where Muslim has a home now. But, you know, that I'd lived there for a year that wasn't on a deal place. 70,000 alcoholics clinging to a rock, you know, the most ideal spot to perform international sport from, and then I lived in Spain for 8 years and it just changed I should have been over here when I won my majors as no question about that. On a different note to you detail in the book how your financial luck also took you had a bad turn in the 80s, I believe, as well. Lloyd's names was a new thing for me. Maybe a bit younger than that for our listeners. Could you explain kind of how that? No, well lloyds of London was one of the biggest insurance all the politicians for Winston Churchill. They were all Lloyd's names. Members of lawyers. And essentially, if you could show a 100,000 pounds, you could underwrite 200. And it was it was something that people did, you know, wealthier people, wealthy people did. Well, IMG put me into lloyds. I didn't, you know, they took care of it all and essentially you don't put all your eggs in one basket. You just because the underwriting under this company or cooperation, you have a good spread. So and I took a stop loss policy out, figured out how much I could afford to lose and given it wasn't much 20,000. I could afford to lose. But beyond that, this stop lasting. Anyway, the whole thing fell. When you sign to be a member of lawyers, you know, they took everything. And it took some years to come to, but it was exactly more or less exactly as I turned 50. And I lost everything I did take your house that took I lost everything and more and had to borrow money to pay it off. It wasn't the ideal way to start a senior career. So then what do you do next? You know, I don't know how the hell we survive Jack kelp, you know, I moved over here, which is what I should have done 40 years before. I lived in Jack's guesthouse for three months. I represented PGA national on the senior tour and I got a club deal thanks to Tom crow from the company's name now, but he was kind enough to give me a club deal, and applied to senior golf four or 5 years, but I was plain certain tournament, and I wasn't exempt, by the way. Despite having won two let alone two write accounts, but two major championships, and all this old guard that put their senior tour together that bob go by and garden a Dickinson's and the like. Did everything in their power to keep foreign players out? And the names we hear trying to keep you out in the 60s as well. Well, yeah, they were mean spirited bunch, who an essentially, they were the ones who never traveled. You know, they didn't need to go outside of America, but it wasn't the necklaces and Johnny millers and trevino's. They were all great. I mean,.

There's also an analyst and leah hextall female play by play analyst. So they've got a nice little stable already early in the game here but Yeah i'd say wayne gretzky he would probably be giving ron maclean a break today saying he probably shouldn't say that and always ri- steak you know cooler with that stuff. Don't let it happen again and we move forward and i think what you'll probably get steve. He until now at the same time gretz gets it. He understands he under. He's always understood his role. He's always understood what's what's expected of him. What's expected of people. What what the fans deserve you know. He he understands that better than anyone. He's always had a great knack. Great street smarts. Great you know. He always has so. I think what he'll be able to do. Steve is he'll he'll be able to point out mistakes. He'll glaring mistakes turnovers and stuff like that. I hear the tone of stuff going with wing yup. He's not going to bury anyone personally.
