"Heart radio app Yes. So new, situated officially in the Legislature have agreed to pay all about 100% of the back rent for low income people, uh and also extend the evictions band I I will talk about it coming up after the news after Five oclock. We got the moist line people waiting right after that On the John and Ken Show a lister it forward into this to the Johnny Kensho email, and I read it And I said, Oh, we got to get this guy on It's the mayor of Aurora, Colorado. His name is Mike Coffman, and the article in The Denver Post is what I learned immersed in a homeless community. So he basically decided he could better understand homeless communities by actually staying at shelters end an encampment and compared life in both. So let's get to Mike Coffman on the show. Welcome. Hey, Thanks for having me. Yeah, First of all, is there a homeless problem in Aurora? You know there were in the different Metro area, which is Aurora. Colorado is a part of that There really is a growing homeless problem. Now it's all relative. It's probably nothing compared to what you all experience. In California. What made you decide to do this? Then? You know, I really didn't feel like I had a good grass of the issue. I had already had covid. It was Christmas time. And so I told my my staff that I was taking a vacation not to bother me and, you know, got my old, you know, video as a closet military was. It was a homeless veteran. I got a backpack. Uh, you know, uh, extra pairs of socks? Uh, some some water, no money. No food and went off was homeless for a week. Uh, so nobody recognized you then. No, I think that the advantage was that in the shelters, um, that you you had to wear man. I wore a wool cap. Uh and and more mask. You were required to wear a mask at that time in the shelters, So it was, you know, it was a perfect You know, the stars really lined up to make this possible where I can go undetected. Well, what I read that really hit me and said, We've got to get this guy on the show was your comparison between life and the shelters? Versus life in the homeless encampments explained what you learned about the differences between the two the people in them and the way you're treated. And what happened. You know, One thing that was shocking is that people never mix. That the people that go to shelters never go to in canvas and the people that are in Kim. It's stay out of shelters, and that really surprised me. I thought they were kind of fungible and went back and forth. And they really don't really two groups. And and I think that What? Um in these were in downtown Denver, Uh, campus in downtown Denver that we're probably maybe more like the ones you have that are, you know, people tend to be relatively close together or kind of packed in With tents, tarps stuff like that. Have you seen any of the pictures coming out of the Venice Beach here in California? Because that's so Yeah, I have. Oh, my gosh, You know, forget tourism. I forget that's what you're describing its horrific So is it that it was very communal, and it was kind of reminded me, You know, my age, late sixties early seventies of the hippie movement kind of drop out of society. Um, drug culture kind of communal sharing of a feeling of freedom. And, uh um so that was amazing. You found it. You found the drugs. They're even more more hardcore man that the drug use was I mean in the late sixties early seventies hippie movement, it was It was marijuana, hallucinogenic drugs here. It's the principal Dr was crystal Methamphetamine was shooting up smoking clear glass fires, but youngish people. I mean, really, twentysomethings, you know, doing this, and they were really shocking that and the level of support they got from the community. I mean, I was shocked that people bring food. You never really had of, you know, I eat better in the encampment. But I did in the shelters and what can be done for these people? The encampment people you're describing you kind of called him the free spirits. They don't want the rules that come with the shelters because you did notice when you're in the shelters that there are rules. Mhm. Yeah, they don't want to be in supervised setting. It's really tough. I mean, you know, just and people people were really you know, a lot of people that are in the at what I call advocates the so called advocates who were really upset about my observations because I never in my talking to these folks. Never met anybody that wanted to move on and get a job. I mean, this has really become a lifestyle issue, and people really had a hard time. Understanding that from the outside and say, how could people make a choice to live like this? How can people want to live like this? But as immediately any just me anybody that wanted to change and that's the hard part. Yeah, I think you know when you're young, like that twenties and thirties, and you want to just usurp responsibility and authority, and then you're in the cloud of drug use. You can't look at that and say, why would anybody want to live like that? Because it's a whole different universe that they're in and they get caught up in it. Yeah. So it is pretty shocking, innit? And from a public policy point of view, it is very hard to to come up with a solution. You know? I mean, what I'm looking at for my city is a no camping ban. That would require them to stay in designated areas where they just can't pop them up anywhere, And that's for that's to me. That's not controversial, but to a lot of people. Here it is. Well, I I think you're you're right, and I think your experience shows it. When you compare the two because you mentioned that you did run into three types of people experiencing homelessness, the mentally ill, the chronically homeless suffering from drug and alcohol addictions, and those who ended up in the economic circumstances where they got displaced. But those first two groups, those first two groups they need to seek help. Because they're now that was not in the cam it that was in the shelters, right. And so, yeah, and the shelters there. Yeah, there were people that were mentally ill that that will never be able to take care of themselves that we have responsibility to help. Obviously, there are people that have a very expansive definition of what mental illnesses but But it was clear to me that the people that couldn't take care of themselves then that large group of People that were chronically homeless that have drug and alcohol issues. And really the vast majority of that did not want to move on. And then those people that were economically displaced, principally due to covid. That, but they had a path. They had it. They wanted to go back to work. They were used in the shelter system as a way to save money, either to wait out to pandemic because they had a job that you know, maybe the clean houses for a living right? Public health officials said. Hey, you, you, you know, we don't want non family members in your house. And so they lost enough accounts to where they couldn't pay rent and loss of place. So they were waiting it out. But in some people were, you know, starting lost their jobs, you know, due to a downturn caused by the pandemic. Regulations were, you know we're doing day labor staying in the shelter than going out in the day and doing day labor saving money with a goal of getting getting a regular job back and getting an apartment, so they all had a path. And I was 100% confident the people that were economically displaced that they had a path. Well, I think out here I think what was really good about your your article in the Denver post and your experience by going to both the shelters and the encampments. We have the encampment problem out here now, I don't think they're all necessarily just people in their twenties and thirties were enjoying the free lifestyle. I think in the encampment here there is a lot of mental illness and some severe addictions. But they're definitely fit the description you gave that they don't want to live. By any rules, So don't you just have to get tough? There's nothing else you can do. Otherwise, she'll be overwhelmed with this problem. Yeah, I think you really I I think you you know, I believe that we have to have a no champion Banner written a pretty Taiwan It says Unauthorised camping is unauthorized camping. You know, it doesn't have to lie rise to a level of being a threat to public health or a threat to public safety. If it's if it's unauthorized camping. On private or public land. It's unauthorized camping and and they're going to have to move to a designated area period and that designated area we can provide some services, clean water, sanitation and things like that. But you know the filth in the trash that's associated with ease and cameras. It's just stunning. So where do you go from here? You said you're getting some blowback about your anti camping idea..

They just need to hear from there can they need to hear more from their constituents? Senate Republicans in Sacramento are calling for a gas tax holiday because come next Thursday. Gas prices If they aren't already climbing. Supposedly, they're climbing because the economy is recovering. So the demand has gone up. Although I remember months ago before the economy was recovering, I started to see the prices go up. But now it's escalating at a pace, which is hitting $5 a gallon in many places as I mentioned the highest level in nearly six years. He would like the Sacramento politicians that run things to look around and say, We got this big surplus. Why don't we give people a gas tax holiday? For a while? "That was a single family home next story. Now they're building something that we'll have a bunch of condos. There will be stunned. They really understand it. They won't believe it will be like how did this happen? Well, that's what the purpose of having you on the air right now is explain to people. This is how it happens. Oh, I can't thank you enough for drilling down on this because it is wonky stuff. And you're right. You know, Sometimes a lot of people just don't wake up till it until it's too late. So I've written this initiative. Actually, that it's starting to get traction may show up on the November 2022 ballots. To amend the state constitution to make zoning and land use municipal affair exactly would shrimp the state's ability to eliminate local control of this? So, um, it's kind of our neutron bomb if they're just going to continue doing this, so so stay tuned to hear from that. In fact, there assembly member mirrors Al Martucci introduced it as a bill C a seven So if somebody wants to go look and read it that I know some people hearing was, they're probably going to gallon to look at that See a seven. It stands for Assembly Constitutional Amendment seven. It's not going anywhere as you can imagine in the Legislature. But hopefully it's going to turn into a statewide initiative. I mean, he's a Democrat. He opposes these bills. SB nine and 10. Yeah, well, I'm a Democrat to okay, well was Democrat of the year like five years ago, so in my little district here, but this is a bipartisan issue. There's no question about we got Democrats and Republicans, you know, and that we all sit in FL we talk about it's got nothing to do. Really. This is truly truly I know. I'm saying that there's a chance to stop it in the Legislature. Yes. Not really where there is. There's always a chance. I don't want to say that I'm testifying next week again before an assembly committee. So, um, you know, you've got groups like Livable California You've got this other groups forming, like California Alliance of local elected who are rallying against all these individual bills, which is just daunting. And so we're still trying. We're still fighting. But you know, we've got plan B. All right, Mayor brand. Thanks for coming on. I appreciate it. Yeah, thanks for having us And thanks for drilling down on this Redondo Beach Mayor Bill brand. He was sent to us from livable California dot org. But he says a lot of organizations are opposing these bills. Specifically, we're talking about Senate Bill nine Senate Bill 10 in Sacramento and I think Mayor Brand explained it well, that you could have Hedge funds, pension funds, Uh, big investors rental giants who could buy the property next door to you if these bills passed And they could build a condo structure in your single family home neighborhood. Jaws will drop. How many wasn't too long ago when people complain about what they called McMansions in their neighborhood. They were single family homes, but they were too big. They're dwarfing my neighborhood and taking over the rich people are buying a bit. This will be worse. "To 1 10 in the I e right now 72 in Dana 720.85 in Anaheim, 98 West Hills and it's 92 in Sherman Oaks. We lead local live from the 24 hour news room. I'm Deborah Mark. Johnny Kensho, John Kobylt and Ken Champ. Oh, it's calf! I am exporting live everywhere on the I Heart radio app. Ken is away for a few days. There is was a great story today in The Washington Post, uh, about hygiene theater. That's this is a cousin of Security theater when she run into at the airport still after 20 years. And this is, uh certain customs and procedures that have nothing to do with preventing what they say It's supposed to prevent. It doesn't actually have an effect, but it makes people feel good. Because people in our culture now in America are very fragile. Very emotionally vulnerable doesn't take much to upset them, and they need constant assurance and reassurance and they need to feel secure. And they need to be feel validated. They need to know that their fears Are being validated. And, uh, I don't know what day the world changed. But the world changed one day and everybody became an emotional wreck. And this is even before Covid Covid just sent Lot of people over the cliff. And I'm going to go through this list that they have scattered throughout this story. And, um, I bet I've been I've seen almost all these things. Uh, and an ice cream shop in Rockville, Maryland. Ice cream servers wear gloves. And they scoop the ice cream into cups. There's a sign taped to the front window that says no cones, Covid. Now. Why would that day Let's think I tried thinking about this earlier and I couldn't come up with it. You might say, Well, they're going to touch the cone. Well, they're wearing gloves and they're touching your cup. And by the way, wouldn't if the virus could be picked up on services. Wouldn't they be on the gloves anyway? No cones, Covid. Can't think of a single reason for that. I guess that makes people feel better. At McDonald's in Virginia. They have yellow police tape. Cordoning off. Self serve bed. Beverage stations. You know where you got to Get a coke. Get a large Coke. You go up. And I saw this at a number of, uh Fast food places. Over the last year and a half and I was just staring at it. It's like, well, why How am I going to get covid doing that? No explanation. No reason. There have been zero people infected, refilling their coke up. Zero people getting infected getting a vanilla ice cream cone. You go to Nationals Park. Baseball. Fans use a Q R code and a digital menu. Rather than ordering directly from the person who hands them their hot dog. So this is so you can't say. I'd like a hot dog and a soda. Right? How many cases that prevent And they're admitting now the experts The experts who were wrong all of last year. That none of these precautions provide any real protection against the spread of the virus. They call it Hygiene Theater. Defined as the deployment of symbolic tactics. That do little to prevent the spread of the virus, but may make some anxious people feel safer. Oh, well. That's all that matters, right? So I think the the covid rate has Plummeted here in America, Vaccinations are soaring. But they're still doing this nonsense. In fact, where was I went to a place this weekend where they insisted on flashing the thermometer. Electronic thermometer on my forehead. What are you doing? First of all the temperature is always wrong. Either that or I'm dead. Flash the thermometer at me one day and it's an 84.3 was my temperature and the guy goes okay. You're alright. Really? Yes. "20 in the morning to 6 20 at night, and the next key word will be at 6 20 with Tim Conway High before the pandemic struck us down in 2021 of the biggest subjects almost daily on the Johnny Kensho was the growing homeless problem, which, by the way, has gotten worse in L, A and L. A county because he's basically been a stand down. Undoing anything about homeless encampments more on that in a moment, But this story ran last week from NBC Force Investigative Team and reporter Joel Grover. That more than 50% of the fires that have started in L. A this year are coming from the homeless encampments. And there's something about Mike bonded in here, too. Let's listen. This was what got the attention on the Venice boardwalk this morning of joggers and passers by flames shooting out of this building, which the fire department said started in this homeless encampment. Next door. Finish. Residents tell me they're used to seeing encampment fires, but none like this one. It was only a matter of time. Until something of this scale happened. We first met Venice resident Alan Person's last fall when the item revealed data that showed the number of fires in L. A connected to the homeless was up 82% from the year before, Parsons was worried about all the propane tanks and barbecues at many homeless encampments, firehouses 100% of fire hazard on House residents told US Flammable materials are the only cause of encampment. Fires tent goes up in flames. What's the cause? Usually a miss. Understanding over money or drugs. It's a problem could be getting worse in just the first two weeks of this year, roughly 58% of fires in L, a more than half of all fires or flagged as being related to homelessness, according to an L. A City fire official was putting the on house residents at risk. It's putting the House residents at risk. Residents like persons have asked the city to resume doing regular encampment cleanups, which had stopped doing when the pandemic began, leading to bigger and bigger piles of combustible materials around many tents. Many homeless advocates call those cleanups inhumane because homeless people are forced to temporarily move their possessions. Yesterday, City Councilman Mike Bonnin introduced a new motion urging the city to do cleanups where it would be optional or voluntary. For the homeless to move their belongings and even hiring the homeless to help clean up encampments. If you look behind me, this is what optional get you tense that air now overflowing from the sidewalk into the streets. The item asked to speak with Councilman bonding today, but he was not available. In the meantime, residents say, they're worried the.

A lot of wacky things happen and something California. I wanted to talk to you about Jet back guy That's been flying around l a X and I guess. Say, you being the sharp eyed attorney. What's the liability here of something disastrous happens? Oh, my gosh. Sure. You've got a guy some unknown, unregistered, unplanned flight and where the most complex and crowded airspace is in the entire world that air spaces for commercial airliners and just illegal flying in that space. So he's tinkering in his garage and wants to be some superhero and he's flying up in that commercial space, and he's going to face a litany of problems because of an accident. The FAA confined motel quarter of a million dollars and put him in jail for a year. But the FAA can also coordinate with other agencies Department defense, Homeland Security, FBI and local authorities. For additional enforcement action. So this guy could just be up the creek. Yeah, If he gets sucked into an engine and brings down a jet is the airline responsible? Could passengers and families sue, they would likely have that sort of insurance coverage. But the primary culprit would be jetpack Guy. I imagine he wanted some suit. Cool superhero name like Iron, Eagle or wing defender. Can't believe they haven't tracked him down yet. Thank God it's a pandemic was less flights up there. I guess that's very true. You know, part of me wishes that he gets whisked away into some special secret government agency with a bunch of other oddballs to save America. But likely is you're going to get changed left on him and that'll be the end of them. Give me a minute and this one for with a young guy to theirs. After that their death of Siegfried of Siegfried and Roy and 81. But this story Is entitled L. A county supervisor Janice Hahn. How dare the Health Department allowed clinics to throw vaccines in the garbage? It's a report on the men's Health Foundation in Inglewood. Who contacted people who are not on the priority list desperately wanting the vaccine because a huge number of people who signed up to get the vaccine at this men's Health Foundation were no shows. And so they These folks got the remaining doses, but that runs afoul of the county Health Department guidelines. This. This would say only people on the priority list should be vaccinated even if the vaccines would otherwise end up in the trash. This is more of Barbara Ferrer's insanity. Yes, she actually created a policy where, if not enough people show up for the vaccines. You're supposed to throw them in the garbage rather than give them to anybody else in the vicinity. Did you believe they work this story for four days trying to get an answer from the L. A County Health department saying, isn't it better to vaccinate non priority residents than throw the precious vaccines in the garbage? They never got an official answer. But they did say eventually we'll take punitive action against clinics like the Men's Health Foundation. But teams, he says what? So it's an off the record thing. Are you kidding me? Which means and they're right. Most clinics will follow the official guidelines and probably throw the vaccines out right because they haven't stated publicly. But they won't come after these health providers. They said. State publicly go out there and find anybody. They'll take the vaccine before it spoils. That's it. That should be the printed instructions. It is. Can anyone get control of Barbara for rare? She's has a policy to throw out vaccines. PhD and social work you have to say is resonating more something, somebody somebody. She told me that she went for quite a while in her daily briefing. One day this week, carrying on about racism. Yeah, that she has to be the most important She actually job. She actually, I think believes that the that the virus itself is racist. Well, I shall let's appoint a commission and strike, I guess against the virus itself is ah white supremacist. If you if you go by Barbara Frayer is thinking here is TMZ. They're exclusive interview with L. A county supervisor, Janice Hahn. Currently I'm sad to report we've on Lee given out about half of the doses that have been allotted to Los Angeles County. This is unacceptable and we need to let all these clinics we need to let all the hospitals every vaccination site should be told by L. A county at the end of the day when you have unused doses. Don't throw them away. Start calling people who can be there in 30 minutes and get it in their arms supervisor. We held that story for four days because we couldn't get an answer. Even from the health Department. We couldn't even get an answer. And eventually we ended up getting kind of a non answer, saying We're just not gonna prosecute them or pure be punitive with them, and we're gonna work on new guidelines. And I was looking at this and thinking work on new guidelines. You guys have known this vaccine was rolling out for months. And what I'm being told on the inside is they had no plan and the health department is still offering. I mean, no guidance If they're not even talking about vaccines that could go in the trash. I don't know what your view of that is. Our county Health department was going under the guidelines that the state of California put out that came from the CDC, right. You have to do Healthcare workers first. Then you can go to these other tears with the central workers. But when we have health care workers that don't show who miss their appointments, then what do you do with the extra doses or unused doses? And by the way, once you open these vials, they have a six hour shelf life. And the worst possible thing that could happen is if we find any of these vials in a trash can you know outside of a clinic? I'm going to call on our health. Apartment to begin immediately issuing guidance to all these vaccinations sites that at the end of the day, unused doses immediately begin giving them to anybody And everybody you can. Every one of these vaccination site should have a wait list. And there should call people up and say, Can you be here in 30 minutes? I don't care what your urine come get vaccinated. That's what I'm gonna do. Well, this isn't going to, um see interviewing l. A county supervisor. Janice. How well did she do it? I don't know. I think this story just ran. I don't know if she's done it yet. Well, how long does it take for for the for bar refer to issue a one line statement. If you run out of Patients get the vaccine to anybody. You confined. Yeah. Take a minute that takes about 30 seconds to type up and send out. He also got the times has been soft balling this story, but this had trained their trash chaotic covert 19 vaccine rollout leads to more deaths were there right now we can say it on this side. That if you don't get these vaccines out there, you're killing people. We've been hearing for months. Most socially distance. You must wear a mask, Save lives care about others?
