To be honest. I've always found Jimmy Webb songwriting arrangements, raw and mawkish. But in using them as sparks for his own creativity here, Springsteen is aided immeasurably, by the roughness of his voice, which cuts the sap and the strict denial of sentimentality in his own lyrics. The result is California style. Pop with a boss, twist sunset melancholy worthy of the mamas and the Papas and the Bobrov. Small. Still. Little. You've told me. Those are only. You've told. Spit. Those are only. You've told me told. Good. As does John Wayne, you just know that the wide open spaces of Springsteen's, expansive arrangements are meant to put you in mind of John Ford westerns, like the searchers, and she wore a yellow ribbon. John. Towards. That one sees broadly drinks too. Here's. Slow. Glad my boots. Ultimately, no matter how different the music around him may sound Springsteen has made a Springsteen album populated by slightly different characters movie extras and stunt men exhausted couples that check into a place called the moonlite motel. When the sun comes up, they'll get in their car, and Bruce will be in the back seat serenading them as they drive onto Los Angeles. In hopes of changing their bad luck for good rock. Excellent. I was disturbed by the call who mentioned a politician who was. Changing the constitution. Track that down. Now that might have been said, but I I always try to track things down. I I cannot find that reference. It doesn't matter. But I think the thing is that the young people are some people don't have any idea that the constitution is important as it is. And it made me think of a song that I'd like to introduce quickly. I promise I won't say nice. I appreciate that. You familiar with an artist called Jimmy driftwood? I think I've heard the name, but I couldn't name any songs. Jimmy driftwood wrote about a thousand songs he was the greatest American folk singer and songwriter that we'd never heard of people collecting music thirty years before I ever did it change my life. Okay. He's from Arkansas, western Arkansas, and he was a schoolteacher. And he started writing music to help his kids. History. And I guess he's most famous for writing the song the battle of New Orleans low short remember that one. Yeah. And although the lyrics were Johnny Horton verging. But he also wrote many many other songs about various things in history, including the civil war and a song called the giant on the thunder head that came to mind because it has a line, and it is the constitution is the greatest star that's ever shown. But it's the context of it's important. So if I can just briefly summarized head, okay? It's the end of the civil war and the Yankees, and the rebels are realized that shouting how because the war was over and they go, well, maybe it was right before the end. And they trading things and talking about this and that and the Yankees and the rebels, and then all of a sudden they see the giant on the thunderhead who spoke to them. Instead. Rebuild your country. Lyrics in front of me. If you dig it could take around. You Yankees rebels shake hands. And then caress go home and read your bibles in the Gettysburg address. We can't rebuild our country all this, bloody mess, and that's the theme of it is reconciliation and appreciation for the country says the constitution, your constitution is the brightest star that's ever shown, and that it really affected me. Of course. When you hear this song? Sometimes he'll bury you think you have captured it for us. Very well. And I think that when we think about the that great war that horrific horrible war that cost so many lives and both sides a civil war. I mean, I just hope that we never ever ever get to the point. And I trust won't where we would feel that way towards one another. I mean, we can have our disagreements. It's one of the great things about this country has always been about this country is that you know, we we decide elections with ballots not bullets. You've heard that phrase used before there are countries around the world with the world's most stable democracy with. You know, we've been so blessed we were so blessed you graphically in terms of from for for for decades for centuries. We didn't have to worry about dating armies from other parts of the world. We protected by two great oceans, I happen to believe it's providence. But there are others who might believe it just might be a corker fate. The fact of the matter is we can't let this country go we cannot become some some South American dictatorship or some central European socialist country with the land of the free and the home of the brave and may it ever be. That's so true. And if they could get together after losing six hundred thousand people to disease and deaths. More than we can get together with people who like Trump, don't like it's crazy that you know, they're there. Making it so extreme and you hear people talk about hatred about their family, their friends, their neighbors. And what do they do on? On Christmas or thanksgiving. Do they? Pour gravy on each other for free for a couple of years. Now, people haven't even been willing to talk. It's a downward spiral because I guarantee you that as the Democrats now control congress, and they basically go after Trump on everything they possibly there were people. Criticizing him yesterday for serving the hamburgers. Mcdonald's burgers to Clemson football team. The Clemson football players seem to be really happy about that. I think there was some comments made today that Trump had made the comment will maybe I'll have Malania whip up some salad or something. I mean, it doesn't matter when he had two scoops. Yes. So the the next democratic president we going to put him or her through that as well. I mean. Yeah. Obama they used to say or Hillary wins. It's over it's over. That's just as pessimistic as. You know, saying that Trump is going to start a war or something. I remember. But you never gonna great when we have we. We've gone through all this stuff. You may remember Bush lied and people died it was like Bill Clinton. They went after Clinton. They would have to Ronald Reagan. Ronald Reagan was a bozo. Bedtime for Bonn for Bonzo. And all of that. We lost the respect that we once had for the office. That's the simplest whoever occupies the office. Barry, thank you. Jimmy driftwood. And I hope you continue to call this program. Thank you very much. Nice contract. Let me go next Sherry, Sherri. Myo more in Medford Hulo. Sherri, how are you tonight? I'm doing well yourself. I'm doing great talk to me. Also, talk to my friend, my friend, Hugh, and Pennsylvania. This is mostly for Hugh and also to circle back to I think her name was Dolores who spoke to before the great. Yes. Hopefully, I can bring us full circle for Hugh a bit of optimism we could be living in the times the future times where someone has each year for insanity. Which I believe the definition is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. That's great. I love that definition. We may we may come across that one person who is able to remedy that. Perhaps. But that being said to the war. At what point she said something along the lines of it? We just. Oh, we lost. You there? Cherry. Are you still there? Jerry. Oh, do me a favor. Sherry we've lost Sherry. Rob cherry. I got you. Now, we lost you for second finished up. You you got cut off in that last sentence. What what was the point you were making? Deloris? She said something like can't we just open back the government and deal with it. After kind of thing we could. But that's essentially what we do all the time over and over again. Right. If we look back on the campaign of every political candidate for the time, I can guarantee at some point their campaign, promise us, secure borders. I'm pretty sure Trump is the only one who has actually acted on it. And now everyone is up in arms. So hopefully, this might be the start of a less insane country who knows want that dealt with. Yeah. I'm I'm hoping I can give you some hope for the future well, Syria. I love your optimism. I know Hugh enough as as a regular caller that that he can be down. And I wanted people particularly young people on thirty three. If I if I didn't mention that. Thank you very much. That's what I wanna hear. That that I know that we have for the most part over the last twenty or so years, basically. I think undersold civics in highschool. Yeah. And I think we need to get back to that. I keep saying that I had a civics teacher at Boston Latin school his name was Mr. Dorothy in the ninth grade. And I learned more from him about civics than I had from anyone. Hear kids talking about it at all, right? Although my parents were good in terms of explaining to me the country, but he really sort of formalized it and explain to us, you know, the situation of the balance of power. The three Porsche. Yes, unbiased, right? You know, the executive the legislative and judiciary. And I think that a lot of people don't understand that. And the other thing that you have to understand his, you know, all of a sudden you're born and your seven or eight or ten years old, and the the average kids go with hell that I come from. Where did they come? I know that people religiously will teach kids differently. Some people will teach one philosophy another teacher and other. But the question is with the country come from and understand the context into which you were born how can you appreciate the context into which aboard exactly that this is kind of off track that assignment that everyone was up in arms about a liberal where they were trying to encourage the kids about it was about some Trumpian, fastest whatever I don't. I. Encourage them to think freely and it turned into a firestorm, and it's almost like just because the topic included Trump. It was like. Yeah. The only thing is this first of all I think that kids, and I'm not sure what grade that was. And I was out of town only got a little bit of it's rough. I'm speaking out of turn. You know, you can you can correct me. But it seems to me that you don't introduce political debate in terms of presidents. Democrats would be like if if some if some teacher in some high school in Arkansas issued a an essay is is is Obama really, you know, a communist. I mean, people right. What are you talking about? Precisely and those who words that you should be look you've got to learn the fundamentals. You wonder what what the conversation for like the more that precise length about assignment couldn't agree. Thank you. Todd, whether it's from their parents and the media or or whatever that it did almost being railroaded into fainting that all bad. It's all bad if it's right? It's bad conservative. It's bad. But in reality, it's there's no room for debate anymore because it's so far, right. And so far less if there's literally no overlap whatsoever discussion, that's we talked about tonight. And hopefully, we can bring back bring more of a back, Sherry, I love you call love the fact that you live in Medford, I hope someday to meet you as well. Thank you. Thanks, Sherry talk soon. Okay. Great night. Six one seven two five four thirty triple eight nine thousand nine hundred thirty. We will be right back again. I'd love some optimism tonight. I would love some optimism from young people like Sherry, she's thirty three. There is a future for America. If there isn't it is all been in vain, and I do not believe it is all been in vain. If you listen to Hugh last hour, my friend from Pennsylvania, he was feeling a little down. Let's talk about the future. And let's think about it optimistically. I am full of optimism..

"Us on Facebook, you can see tiger right next to me. He's typing away in my keyboard setting things up so people on Facebook and actually see various things titles and keywords. So that when people come across those keywords, they can watch us on Facebook live, and the only people that would know that are the people who are already on Facebook live six happy new year, you're excited about this year. The fourth time you said happy new year to a great gardening year know, the weather in San Diego is been phenomenal is for rain phenomenally coal to the past couple of days. It's colder than it has normally been over San Diego. But the amount of rain that we've gotten it's been perfect. Yeah. We've been spaced apart hasn't we haven't had a deluge. So the water sinking into the ground. No wonder you're so happy plants are loving energy, just happy as let's see. What is it a happy as a clam? And how do we know clam? How do we know? We know clams are really happy. Yeah. They got a smile center. Ashley. That's where it comes round. So it's great weather for digging up roses too because the soils are so come should come over here. Why don't you come help me up some rose, you take an energy drink this morning? I did have my coffee. You're just fired up is what you are Arte fired up. It's going to be a good year. And remember we've got a little better camera angle on you now to on Facebook. Erects shot you can't hide anymore. John much to hide during the breaks. I go to my corner. Take. What are you a boxer? Anyway, we are here for the next two hours going to be a great show as John mentioned. We've got time Spelman lined up from daybreak nursery tomboys evokes a lot of questions. Well, you know, Tom is probably one of the leading fruit tree experts not only in California, but in the hall country. So if you have any questions about fruits, let us know he's an expert on citrus. If you get our newsletter, there's an article that he wrote on citrus, which I think gives you a good overview of. The different types of citrus and thinks you might want to consider for planning the spring. Now, it's not only the time to to be doing specific tasks during the winter. But think about what you're going to put in the spring. And it's probably I would say that citrus season in California probably begins pretty heavily around mid February mid February or early March. Yeah. For some people it's definitely early March. But mid-february. Yeah. So and I don't know if if citrus inventories still a problem, it's horrible. Is it hard to get hold of in in? That's one thing with citrus is that people need to be. On top of it. And they need to. Do their best to try to reach out and see what's available because there's always things going on and off availabilities. And if they really want that unique hard to find stuff they're gonna have to get it when they can because it's not always there. They sell out in right now in California with all of the rules and regulation when it comes to citrus on how they can grow them quarantines how they have to treat them. It's difficult for citrus growers. So definitely if you're looking for that unique citrus tree, if you find it by it, usually there's the if you have a state like California does there's usually regulations that cover the state is far as shipping plants in an out of the state, but with citrus there's actually regulations between county counties. Yeah. So a lot of the citrus. There are several citrus growers up in northern California that can't ship down here anymore. Is that still true? That's exactly the problem. Southern not selling company, San Diego County. We pretty much have to citrus groves Laverne. Those are our primary to every once in a while we might be able to get something outside of that. But then it's gone through like a middle person where up north they've got for four wins right for seasons for win for win win four seasons is where you say sell during all off. In they have another series of them, and they won't and they have really cool varieties up there. But you can't get them. Here is very challenging. I think this day clawson's nursery used to be used as their. I think I pass them on the way to work. Are they still there? I we haven't seen anything from clawson's in a long time. So I don't think so, but I could be wrong. So there's a citrus nursery I pass on the way to work every day. And I'm not sure if that's them or not. But I know they're in that. So forget that or use inspection between here in Arizona. We can't even get fruits throughout the entire. Yeah. Wow. They're just really clamping down. I know I know what they're afraid of. And I know what their reasonings are. But when you go to another country like Hawaii, for example, before you land, they they pass out those little sheets of paper to fill out. What are you bringing in? What do you have? Where have you been all those things? Yeah. And I know, you know, this, but Hawaii's really not another country. Fiftieth state. Wait, wait, wait. Wait a second. Holding my leg nineteen Fifty-nine as I recall, sixty fifty eight Alaska, right? And then nineteen fifty nine for Hawaii. I think you remember the fifty Niners forty nine forty nine. It was the, but when Alaska became a state there was a group of people called the fifty nine dollars the put together a caravan and migrated to Alaska and people were joining that caravan was because back then there were no highways a little two lane. Dirt roads looks positively. To alaska. Yeah. North to Alaska. Great song. You can look it up. Right. I will look it up. I'll play some Johnny Horton for you as well later on north to Alaska. I to talk to you about Johnny Horton during the break. Okay. Fine. That you held. I know I was surprised when I was in Alaska that they had a cut flower production. Farm out outside outside, and they grew piano. Yeah. Yeah. Huge amounts of panties and you wanted and this was outside Fairbanks. They use freeze proof. They really effective pretty much were. Affect and covered during the winters. So I was just surprised that that was up there. I didn't realize that at the time. And then here in San Diego. We wish we could grow peonies. And we can't though there is a couple roses roses even referred to as the peony rose. That's Rex president von Hindenburg because it looks like a big old fat penny when it opens and then Yves Piaget, which is a more modern rose one of the romantic roses from a on in France. Looks like a big fat Pani you big fat beanie. I'm going to start calling people that next big fat. So instead of a Panzi European what are your peony with you? Hey, thank you for joining us on Facebook live questions already coming in which we can probably answer waiting for Tom Spelman AM twelve forty here in San Diego live. And of course, streaming around the world and across the country on biz talk radio you want me to do the quote of the day while I have it here since I'm still without my computer. I think tiger. And I would love nothing better. Yeah. Oh, I can think of a few things you would love better. But this is right up there. I know that and I picked this quote because it's New Year's right? Everybody's making New Year's resolutions in this quote, says your success and happiness lies in you. Resolve to keep happy and your joy, and you shall form an invincible host against difficulties and that was from Helen Keller. Yeah. She had a lot to deal with it. And she. So that it is kind of an inspirational vote should say not New Year's new year. Yeah. I hear that a lot plural. Notes new year happy new year. Happy New Year's Helen Keller five times. What's that? I've killed Helen Keller five times what does this sum game on your phone? Yeah. There's a rose called Helen Keller. Put out by the Barneys from Italy. Okay. So what's the description of the Helen Keller road? It's pink fragrant. And I guess important. It would be fragrant right since. Right. That was one of the senses. She still had her. And it's a relatively new rose. I think was put out after she died in our came across a picture on on the internet. Obviously takes time ago so night, while the pictures real picture of Charlie Chaplin with Helen Keller and issues touching his face trying to figure out what he looks like. It's a great picture. I'll bring up bring it up here in a few things by her, and she's inspirational person, really. Yeah. -solutely you saw the movie, obviously, we all saw the movie the miracle worker, right? Yeah. And Bancroft and Patty Duke. Yeah. That was a good movie Oregon movie, sixteen minutes after the break coming up. I will check during the break. Deceive Tom Spelman is with us. And then did you say we had some questions that we can comments going on on Facebook will get to those right? Do stay with us. I'm Brian main. He's John NASCAR cappella FOX, welcome to Facebook live questions comments. Keep them coming going to get a hold of Tom Spelman, daybreak a nursery.
