"By shake. When are we talking about how newspapers had to adapt its pages because of coronavirus? Thank you fail that and more besides ahead here on the briefing with me. Tom Edwards. Very good offense you from London countries around the world now considering just how long they should keep their citizens on lockdown there are concerns that lifting restrictions who soon could risk a second wave of corona virus infections. Let's hey what one of the. Uk's top medical advisers. Dr Johnny Harris had to say to make it clear to the public. If we are successful we will have squashed top of that curve which is brilliant but we must not then suddenly revert to our normal way of living. That would be quite dangerous. If we start within all of our efforts will be wasted and we could potentially see a second peak so over time probably over the next six months. We will have a three week review. We will see where we going. We need to keep that lead on and then gradually we will be able to hopefully just some of the social distancing measures and gradually guesses all back to normal. Well here's hoping are listening to that down the line forest is multiple twenty-fourth health and science correspondent. Chris Smith Chris is also a consultant virologist at Cambridge University. I'm good afternoon to you Chris. Thanks for being with us again. Almost daily updates from you. Tell us a little bit about what Jenny Harrison and put it in context for us. It's all about I. Guess the sense of flattening the curve. I've heard squashing this on Brera. Can you tell us what that means? You're the the basis for this is that this is a new virus as such everybody in society is susceptible to catching it because of that there is the opportunity for everyone to get really infected really fast and pass it onto lots of other people see you get very rapid growth of cases if that were to happen what we know from past experience is that you get a really high peak. Lots of people all all at once now. Although the vast majority about eighty percent of people will have very trivial infection. A more than ninety nine percent of people will recover without problems from catching this. There's a single number of just a few percent who will get very severe infection and they're the people that the health service will need to help. And they're also the people who were trying to protect by the current social distancing and self-isolation self quarantine type measures. The problem is that if all of these cases occur at once then there will be too many of those people who need the NHL to help them for the services. We have available to meet that demand. And if you look at the numbers without any kind of intervention. The predictions are we would have probably exceeded the capacity of the NHL Cope by thirty fold. So what this did was to encourage the government. In this country and many other governments adopting similar policies.

"They're kind of losing. And that's a, a really bad sign. So, of course, the question this raises is why things didn't go Cording to plan. Right. Like, why didn't Chinese political development mirror, the sort of liberal economic development that you've seen the country? The answer is complicated. Obviously, this is a big big big deal. But to my mind, I think the premises of the theory were mistaken, right? This idea that if you move towards more private economic system, at the same time that will. Choir people in power to give more power to the citizens in politics. That was mistaken, right? The reason why is that you can use political power to turn market forces into tools of state, repression the great firewall in China, the impositions of make some foreign companies who want to do business there, the ways in which it forces its own companies to comply with political standards. All these are mechanisms of authoritarianism, they are not independent checks on state power, but rather private powers become an extension of state power and trying, and you could also use those mechanisms end that control of the economy as leverage over the population. Right. So, basically the way that China today operates is this kind of tacit agreement that, you know, the Chinese government says, hey, you let us run things e you sit there and take it. You don't say anything. You don't complain. We will make sure that the economy grows. Does and your Bank accounts, will grow and your children and their children will have better opportunities and so far, they've been able to deliver in many ways on that millions of people in China have been lifted out of poverty through globalization through economic liberalization. The question is if that's lows down. Right. Or if that doesn't work out so much at a certain point, when do Chinese people in mainland, China start going. Okay. We're not into this deal anymore. Right. So there is that question of how long that will hold. But for now, we've seen people are not rising up. People are not speaking out. And again, it goes back to the tools of state repression. Right. It's not just the economy. They can literally disappear you and they will, but to bring it back to Hong Kong just for a second, like it's globally. Important, financial hub and people. There are quite wealthy or at least, you know, live a decent middle class life. And so. What is going on here? Well, the question is an issue of values and democracy in the future of the region. And, and like this has been a fight that's been going on forever. Like this is not a one off. If you're listening to this, and you feel like you've heard this story before it's because you have there've been protested for twenty twelve recently, there have been partisan 2014, these massive ones that fought a LA illogic, that led that basically, allowed Beijing to help install the leader of Hong Kong, which, by the way, it passed and the leader Hong Kong, right now, wasn't stalled through that law. So if it's in the DNA of Hong congress to keep fighting back against any even perceive little encroachment that Beijing has on the city. So let's keep an eye on the story, right? It is not only hugely important, but still developing, there are massive protests cuddled for the weekend, and I expect that the issue of Hong Kong's democracy will not be one resolved this week, I wanna thank our producer bird Pinkerton for all for hard work. I. I want to thank Johnny Harris, one of our vox video stars for helping us get all of these voices from Hong Kong into the episode. "Family. This is our season finale and thinking back on our season, and our reporting it's really clear that all the policies we implement really reflect what we value our stories from Oakland from Vermont from South Carolina, all of these policy experiments, make statements about what is a problem, and how it should be fixed in Iceland. It seems like the government thought that women taking more leave than men was a problem because it led to gender inequity because it made the wage gap worse. So Iceland, passed a policy to fix the problem. And it seems to be working. In Denmark, people claim to see the gender imbalance as a problem. But when push comes to shove, they value leave policy that prioritises flexibility. Even if that means women take a lot more than men, and even if that means a bigger gender wage gap. It feels a little funny to be an American nitpicking. Danish leave policy Chartres we live in a country with no paid leave. But still when I left Denmark. I kept thinking about what this all means for Danish women. I thought about this story that nine a hole in told me she said that when her son was born she and her husband shared leave. I remember it very closely because when I had my leave I made the house every day. So when her baby was sleeping. I was willing to rob Beckham cleaning in making it all nice and me. So it could be nice when he got home when he took his leave. He was outside all day with the with the tile. And when I come home, the we sold over, and this is in the Sada was annoyed nothing in what does he do any of this? And then I realized that he was doing it in a very clever way he was using the time with his child. Why did I think I have to do the home? And that's just some of the stereotypes that I was the kind of mum who both have child and have a nice home. Not a Holand is a pretty powerful woman vice president of Denmark's largest union in a country that loves unions. But even she struggled with gender stereotypes. That are familiar to a lot of women all over the world, if we want to close the gender wage gap. We need dads to take time off on their kids are born we need them to take on an equal share of childcare and housework, Denmark, and Iceland show that these changes are unlikely to happen unless the government steps in and declares dads need to take time off with their babies to without a policy change. It seems like a lot of Danish dads are going to get stuck baking failure cakes for generations to come. Gillian Weinberger is the senior producer for our show. "But is piled on all this going to additional conspiracy theories stuff on top of that i do want to give a shout out probably reason why this something we were all kind of passionate about both in terms of zacks wonderful impression also a gend brilliance in this we did a really good video which if you have not washed if you're listening to this it's both on our youtube charles on facebook with our colleagues sml us and johnny harris that is all about the rise of your one one of the things we focus on the video is key is very selfconsciously in brit liberally trying to be the anti editor so editor with found with men status joe was talking about earlier he basically banned religion may have gone too far and banning religion country has a religious portion of it he built the monitor stabilty army in as a as a secular defense heir to one sees himself as kind of a historical figure on par with editor he just wants to turkey in the total opposite direction and there's something we had a lot of fun exploring the video at some length because seeming imagery of ataturk who banned the fez he sort of shutdown mosques so seeing the that as imagery and then you see the imagery of air to one at one point a kind of signal moments the rise of the protest against air to one were mass protest in a park in downtown istanbul against the development that would have demolished the park to build a shopping mall by one of aired wants cronies you had mass protest in the park aired onecent and takes with water cannons and that sort of prompted in some ways this this massive were still seeing that still exists this massive popular discontent with aired one but i recommend a video because seeing that is in some ways much more powerful than than hearing it despite the brains of zacks impression of of gone appreciate the compliments but there's also serious point here wouldn't you talk to experts on democracy and the serve rise and fall dictatorships the consistent through line is that the most important factor.

"Notre dame on the last big monday played as well as i have seen them play all year and i i ran into the libe on the plane departing south and and i said that this could issue looked on both and that was the team that everybody expected to be vying for the number one number two position uh in terms of nc aa seething all season long now can they sustain that will sing and i i purposely avoided south carolina 'cause i know you want to get there yeah yes we will definitely want to talk about the game but you makes very interesting points you know we also rounded we put this formula together okay what is it going to take to be new cod and i'm gonna ask you about a team that she didn't name because i feel very strongly that mississippi state could be amongst those teams that have a chance to beat yukon now do they have that experience of the final four environment like notre dame like baylor like maryland no so obviously that's a concern the one thing i think of that separates in they all goes back to you call us beyond this so last year's yukon team in my opinion you couldn't defend them period you just could not because they had three of the best players to ever play on the on the college level this year i think some one is good enough defensively could defending yukon now do you still have to be able to score points yes but i think they're both more vulnerable on the offensive in then obviously they have been the last four teams in mississippi stay up say i had their game on sunday vic schaffer had an hour and a half shootaround and i thank him and his assistant johnny harris went through every possible scenario of what missouri could have rant their defensive details are very impressive and after losing to yukon last year by sixty points obviously in the tournament it was an embarrassment i think it's something they will remember but i also think that they may have a chance do you agree that they have what it or do you think they're they're missing something zone one is that free i one hundred percent agree and here's line and i was just reward in the second half of maryland connecticut.
