Kuznetsov's OT goal lifts Capitals over Blue Jackets 4-3

"Because that's off scores 26 seconds into overtime to lift the capitals past the blue jackets four three, because that's off 7th of the season, sends the caps into the all star break on a winning note, Trevor van riemsdyk did his part scoring twice for Washington, which wanted a two goal lead before picking up its 5th overtime win of the season. We talked before the game about how important these two points were just going in the break, feeling good, a little bit of positive vibes from when we come back and have this home stretch. Johnny gaudreau scored the third period equalizer for the blue jackets, which skate into the break with the Blackhawks with a league low 34 points. I'm Denny Capp.

"Even if you were super optimistic about this team, you couldn't in good conscience put them any higher than like 6 or 7, right? And yet here they are, you know, very comfortably the second best team probably in the entire league. Behind Boston, you know? I think the thing with Boston versus them is that there's a little more believability in the goaltending with the bruins. And that's the only thing. You know? No, there is. And also like, yeah, but especially with the top players up front, like we've seen them do it in terms of that historical track record. Now, the way this devil seems playing is just like, it's so intoxicating. Like you just can't, I don't understand how you can hate on it. I guess you can because I post a clip of Jackie was just basically danced around and playing with his food and embarrassing that opponents and then I get people replying being like, oh, you just got to play the body. You just got to hit that guy and then see what he does. It's like, all right. Well, I think the other team's trying. They just can't catch him on for a second. Yeah. You used to hear that a lot about Johnny gaudreau in college. Oh, and he gets to the NHL. Guys are going to bury him. They would have to catch him first. I don't know. I don't think they're ever and has he everybody hit hard in the NHL? Have you seen one time where you're like, oh, Johnny gaudreau got rocked there. And he's been in the league for like a decade almost. There were guys you can't hit. Yeah. All right, we're going to take a break here. We're at the halfway mark. We've done 8 of the 16 teams. And when we come back, we're going to pick it up from there. You are listening to the hockey PDO cast streaming on the sportsnet radio network.

"But I find it interesting that there are inching more and more in towards the middle of the ice. In between the two dots. Which is the most premium real estate in the offensive zone. I think if you can consistently find a way to get shots in there, that's typically the hardest part to get into the defense is generally pretty good at sniffing that out and having someone there at least with a stick to prevent you from getting shots off. And the reason why I bring that up is because one of the guys they brought in this off season is all over Burke's friend who has profiled as one of the best players in the league at getting their time and time again throughout his years in Columbus. And he's doing so yet again here in Seattle. I don't know if we're ever going to be able to get to the Columbus blue jackets deep dive because we have the good vibes requirement with good visor requirement. But just thinking back to their off season and we saw that we saw that video of how the how the jackets basically got into Johnny gaudreau sweepstakes because they signed his friend Eric Branson. Of course. However, in doing so, it forced them to get rid of all of your strands for basically nothing. Yes. Would you trade Björk strand for good Branson and goudreau straight up? And I frankly don't know if I would. I think he's been that effective not only at 5 one 5, but also on special teams for this team. He's one of the he's one of the really good middle guys on the power play. For one, we saw the Columbus power play with so much more efficient when the offense ran through him when Patrick linen was hurt last year. And now we're seeing at 5 on 5 that this is the top, this is the best line that Seattle has. This is a dominant puck possession line with Alex Weinberg and entrepreneurs.

"I like the construction of the team last year. It's a little bit different this year. They've changed their starting goaltender. That doesn't happen very often for a first day on the Cup championship. They've lost a real important catalyst in basil cadre, who was a key contributor as the number two center. So taking Darcy Kemper the star egoli and cadre out of the mix has, I believe, weakened them, but it hasn't made them weak. And that's an important distinction. They are still, I think the top team in the Western Conference. But I would suggest that the gap between Colorado and everybody coming up behind isn't as great as it was, maybe four to 6 months ago. Last season, we saw kale win both the Norris trophy as the NHL's best defenseman and the Khan smythe trophy as the playoffs MVP. And he was so good last year that no less an expert than Wayne Gretzky said he's the best two way defenseman we've seen in at least a generation. I would say probably the closest player we've ever seen that offensively and defensively we can make an impact of a game that much, probably Bobby Orr. We got to go back to Eric, what in your opinion does make kale macar so special and is it possible for the guy to somehow get even better? Well, first of all, the latter part is a great question because he is still so young and he has taken such great strides that yeah, I don't believe he's reached his ceiling. Yeah. And I do have as you referenced at the start. Of our interview, a fairly long perspective on the game. And I've seen Paul Coffey come along. He was a special special player. Al macinnis was a special player. Scott niedermayer makar has elements of all of their games. The skating ability of a need or the ability to shoot the way Al McKinnon did. And as a kid, I watched Bobby or play a lot. And I do think that there's an awful lot about the way Bobby horde dominated the game and the way the K on the car could take control of the game. There's a lot of parallels there. And people have made the comparisons in the past to this person is the next Bobby or and it has never proven to be true. But in the case of kale mccart, if he stays healthy, it might be true. Well, speaking of absolutely incredible players, Connor McDavid has started off this new season by scoring a hat trick and picking up an assist in his very first game. And there you have it a hat trick. For the oilers captain. You know, last season, Eric, the oilers overcame a pretty big hurdle by going deep in the playoffs for the first time in McDavid's career. Does this seem have what it takes to go even deeper this season? I think so. Yeah. Because I think the one thing that they have done, not just this summer, but over the course of the last 8 to 12 months is that they have filled in some of the gaps around Connor McDavid and Lee and dry cycles. So for a long time, they had arguably the two best players in the world. And yet we're getting anything done because the goaltending was just so. So the defense really dropped off after about two or three players. And there was no secondary scoring to speak up. Even in a game like hockey, where you can have somebody like me, David and draisaitl, that are so dominant when they're on the ice. They play 22, 23 minutes a night and it's a 60 minute game. And so, you know, you look at picking up event or Kane mid season last year. If you look at getting Zach Hyman at the start of the year before, you look at the progression that some of their younger forwards like Tyler Yamamoto have made. Ryan nugent Hopkins is still a viable third piece up front. So their forwards are just flat out better. And then Evan Bouchard is a young defenseman that over the course of 12 months has settled in as a very solid top four option and you've got someone like nurse there and then they went out and they hope they got their goaltending solution in Jack Campbell and that will really be the key because if Campbell can bring a consistent level of goaltending to an Edmonton team that has the ability in the capacity to outscore other teams, then yeah, they have a puncher shot at winning a championship when you have players that dominated in the last lane McDavid and draisaitl did last year. When you think about the numbers that they put up in the amount of games that they play, it was phenomenal. So yes, they are a viable threat to Colorado for sure. Conor McDavid was edged out for the Hart trophy last season by Maple Leafs center auston Matthews, who scores an incredible 60 goals in 70 three games. Do you figure that was sort of a one off? And should we expect McDavid to regain the MVP crown this season and win his third heart trophy? Well, yes, I do. We had to make predictions and Conor McDavid is going to be my default MVP for the next 8 to ten years. When I started Wayne Gretzky won the MVP and 8 years in a row and I think 9 years out of ten and he was so dumb and we would win scoring races by 70 points sometimes. And when you got your ballot in the mail in those days, you'd fill out Wayne Gretzky first and then you'd figure, okay, who's next and then like will you there's ball coffee? So I think McDavid is that good. And I do think that he is the favorite. But I also think that when I look at the way Austin Matthews plays, I look at his size, his ability to shoot the pot that his ability to find those seeds, I just think Matthews is going to be the next palette so that again, I think he's sturdy. I think he's capable of 60 plus goals every year. And I think that can stay relatively healthy and has the desire to play a long time. We will be talking about him as someone that could potentially score goals at that way in grad school. So that you can level. He could be one of the all time great goal scorers. Okay, moving on in the Western Conference here, one of the most memorable series in all of last season was the so called battle of Alberta, the oilers against the Calgary flames. Those games were absolutely wild and incredibly high scoring. It felt like a throwback to hockey from the 1980s or something. The recovery flames then had a very interesting off season. Eric, can you just sort of walk us through some of their off season drama and where they ultimately landed? So they win the Pacific division. And on the opening day of free agency, Johnny gaudreau, who was tied for number two in the NHL scoring the notified them that he was going to test the market. And I think right up until the 11th hour, they thought that the drug was going to re sign in calorie. I want to wish John, his family, all the very, very best. He gave us 8 great years here. They wonderful years and a lot of memories. And I can tell you it's difficult right now. It's difficult. So that really caught them by surprise. And I think there was a period of time where they were really weren't sure what to do next and then what compounded the situation was that the drones line made Matthew kuchak who was 8th in the NHL scoring last year. He had a year left on his contract that he notified them that he too planned to leave Calgary as a free agent. American born players not staying in Canada. It's becoming a bit of a trend here in both these players are American born. And that at the end of the day, unfortunately, is out of the team's control. This was considered by many people along with the lives lent him to be the best line in hockey. So that you can imagine that the fan base in the city was completely torn by this. I think that pretty much obliterates our first line. I'm heartbroken. Matthew, stay with us, please. But what ended up happening was that the flames made a very astute trade, I believe, with Florida. Matthew could chuck any conditional fourth round pick were sent to the Florida Panthers in a trade which was a happy surprise to flames fans. Jonathan Uber dog who was tied with the drove for second in the league in scoring, and also a defenseman Mackenzie Uighur who immediately becomes one of the top two or three defense was in Calgary. And then with the capped space that they had allocated to good drove, they turned and spent that money on cadre. Former Colorado avalanche and Stanley cup champion nazem kadri has agreed to a 7 year contract with the flames that deal will pay him $49 million over 7

"You know, I'm in Philadelphia right now and I was thinking maybe it wasn't the time for them to sign Johnny gaudreau. You know, like they're in a total reimagining of what their team is. Maybe as good a player as good girl is. It wasn't the right time. Right. And so each team has to make that make that determination. And the kings were patient, and they collected picks and collected young players and they really look like a team that's going to be a problem this year. All right, there he is, Chris I have a joining us for a quick segment here on The Rain drags hockey podcast recording on this Thursday. We'll get to our NFL pick of the week, your momentarily abs, but revisit the line on the Maple Leafs in Montreal for the Montreal Canadiens home opener. I mean, it would make sense that you'd put money on the Maple Leafs because they'd be heavily favored against a kid laden Montreal Canadiens team, but there is something special about opening night, the opener of the season in Montreal and the ceremony that goes along with it. And if your bet in Montreal, you're probably happy after that game. Man, they were anywhere from plus two ten, the plus two 30 during the evening. And honestly, I thought the player was to take them on the puck line, which is the spread for hockey plus one and a half. And that was about minus one ten. Even odds on both sides. I thought that was the plague for Montreal. Listen, there was a lot of teams have heavy favorites last night. You know, Colorado is minus four 20. Ironically. Then you had Carolina massive favorites now. They ended up winning, but early in this season, opening night, too many things can happen. Especially the difference between Carolina and Colorado versus Toronto is the Toronto with the roti. And listen, I don't know why Toronto fans keep doing this to themselves. I knew. I didn't care how big of a favorite the leafs were last night. I knew it would be close. Sure, they probably could have nearly did win. But the money had to be on the side of Montreal. Amazing. Opening season, I'm always nervous about the home team because I think and remember back to how much you want to win. It seems more so at home. There's a ceremony that matters a lot or matters very little. It does, but it matters. And you're jittery and nurse. I mean, look at the oilers. They gave away Tupac's in the first three minutes or down two zero.

It's fun to joke about. But there's something else that's orange and on fire in the NHL right now. And that is your Calgary flames. And I don't mean it's I don't mean, I do not mean that it's because they are the actual flames. I mean, they are actually, they are on day of burning. They are burning to the ground Evan. They are burning as we speak. I actually just, this is such, I feel like such a loser. As you were talking doing the read, I wrote down tweet orange line, dash flames. So I'm making a mental note. Maybe you can beat me to it as I'm driving here. Anyways, for those who do not know the flames are if there we go. The tweets are being made as we speak. The flames are on fire though. "Know Sweeney said that they're not looking at the defense is important. All that stuff, that's true, but also you have to borrow in a Sean and all these guys here. You at least have bodies. When it comes to the most pressing issue, yes, you want to make sure you have your ducks in a row in terms of depth and how to prep in case injuries happen, which talky that will always happen. But you have to, I think, the pragmatic and looking ahead to get past this hurdle of the cap's face and getting under that limit without moving some guys. So I might as well do it now, which is what I imagine. The reason why there's a hold up right now, because I think they'd rather get that cap situation somewhat settled, or at least make it a little bit easier to navigate now as opposed to signing them now and getting to November and all of a sudden you're stuck in a jam where are we getting to November and they can't activate mcavoy for a game or two because they have to get under the cap limit, which is not good. You'd rather not have that happen. So I have to imagine there's still assessing their options now as opposed to pushing that kind of down the road. Because sooner or later, you got to deal with it. Yeah, and again, even at the depth on D, they have so many on the left side, they got like nobody on the right. So Connor Carrick is going to be like your everyday third pairing right shot defenseman until mackerel comes back. I mean, again, I know they like internal competition, maybe they put the ball on that right side, but it is just one of those things where, you know, I get they have no cap space or they didn't have much, but on free agency day I was just kind of surprised they didn't do more on the right side on D they kind of just get carrot vanilla Terry for up front.

"Say, too, that the brood just need to get every single check player to make pasta not happy. It's not like you don't only talk to check players or something like that. He's really really liked in the room and has a lot of close connections with the rest of his teammates. So, but yeah, I think as you said, can't hurt. And it's not one where I think, you know, I think for pasta and who's already expressed a willingness to stay here. I think it's more or less mapping out the vision of all right, not saying, all right, Pavel sog is your center for the next 5 years. I don't know if that really moves the needle, but in terms of I think for him, it's just about pitching the future where it's him and mcavoy and lindholm and Paul and marchand at his stage of his career. By selling low rise jumping in when you've got more money off the books where the bruins were going to be active and free and see to add more guys. We're in a market that people want to come to. Puzzle socket doesn't even have to move because he lives in passing already. How convenient is that to get traded to the team that you live at during the summer? Yeah. So again, Boston's beyond just the original 6 history and all that stuff is a market that hockey players want to be in in terms of location, how passionate fans are, the resources here, the amount of pros that are here during the season, the off season and all that stuff. So the bruins will be active once they have money freed up. Now, is that going to be two three years down the line? But this is a team that if they're looking at 2025 and you got these guys in place with mcavoy and astronaut. They're not going to just let top tier freed and they're not going to be on the sidelines for those either.

"Stuff. About blasting with energy, really. So great. Actually, it does make my stomach feel better. So I will give them that. Anyways, moving along. An interesting thing of last week that I don't think we really saw coming, we were prepped for free agency, Montgomery's presser, development camp, trades, a trade broke last week, the trade was won for one Erika for Pavel zacha. And there's some interesting takeaways from the Pavel saga thing, right? You know, the contract, except for arbitration. There's or if it's in line up, which we've kind of covered. But an interesting thing I keep coming across is, you know, it seems like Patrice bergeron is definitely coming back, right? At some point, the contract will be incentive laden, low AAV, you know, unless something drastic happens, it feels like he's pretty much back, especially given every single player and prospect and I'm like, oh, I can't wait to play with him and training camp. So he'd be letting a lot of people down. It didn't come out great. Yeah, not great. But crazy is a different kind of thing. Because, you know, again, didn't was in the check last year, it would require moving his family back across the world. You know, it's a different dynamic to that. Where, you know, again, when you said, you know, the conversations are good, but you never really know. And if creatine doesn't return, is a good enough to see. Is that an upgrade over Eric holla or even like a Charlie Coyle? Yeah, I mean, that's one of those things where I don't think we really know until he's in that spot. And I think it's something we talked about when we first were grading the zaka trade where, listen, if he's your third line left wing and he's with Khalid coiling Craig Smith, I think that's a home run of a trade in terms of you're getting a younger player who you could probably have under a longer term deal, whatever his new contract gives us an RFA, but that's the spot for him, and he can work with coil and Smith. I think you have a lot of value there. These are two C a little bit tougher of a grade, right? If you're already moving on from hala, which as we've said before, the bruins at their best when the two C? No, they needed an upgrade there, which is why we talked about creating so much, but you at least knew what you're going to get with hollow there that if he's with hall and posternak, he's going to very least be productive. I don't know if he's going to be 80 point guide, but he's pretty much playing it like a 70 point pace once he was with those guys. And who knows? Maybe you put Zac O with Taylor hollander pasta rock. I would not be surprised if his numbers jump up quite a bit, right? But it's also true.

"You're not going to remove them even if that's one where you trade crew at the time in the middle of it. And the venom, the vitriol that comes in the next two, three years of giving up an asset like krug in the middle of that win now window. That's going to be there a lot longer than maybe 7 8 years down the line. We're like, oh, look at all this stuff. We got the crew. Yeah, it kind of sucked like you're always going to have that narrative for that. That second guess in the back of your mind, when you subtract from a team that's trying to win now, so that one, yeah, it's tough to draw a parallel between that and let's say what they're using now with pasta non where you look at what the flames right now where even if that team still has good pieces to build a room. And they had a great defensive foundation. If you lose a guy like Gujarat, a hundred point guy, a guy who's so weird, especially at even strength for nothing, devastating. Like you can't have that for a team that looks like it was really building toward something. And now as soon as you draw a sign with Columbus, what were all the columns that immediately came out, it was like, do the flames blow it up. It shows you how quickly you look the forges of Frances can change. I didn't ask boudreaux to walk for nothing. When the window completely shots, and that is it's funny, you know, obviously everyone's kind of been crapping on the bruins lately because of the prospects and things like that. But the reality is the fact that the bruins have left a cup window open now since like 2007 until now is mind-blowing. It really is mind-blowing. The cup window. I mean, I know like right now the cup window is not fully, really open. But there's still, they're still competing for a playoff spot. The flames may have to blow it up. You know, again, they could also use that space to do other things. They could, you know, I don't know what you do in that situation. You tread water next year, because then they have markstrom and net, you know, chuck's good, and they got good players. I know a lot of people around you always wonder about like Sean monaghan. Maybe this will be the year, Evan. He finally breaks through. It's like, who was it? Was Jonas brodin from the wild for a while that was like supposed to be a Bruin for so long. And there was Gabe Landis cog, Brendan Carlo forgave Landis dug straight off, which now in retrospect might have been a pretty good deal for the bruins. Way back way back then. But before we get David Craig stuff, I want to tell you about our next our new partner over at athletic greens. They have a product I use literally every day. Literally every day. I started taking AG one because I wanted better gut health and more energy. I'd actually do not drink coffee or use caffeine.

"Actually could have lowered the market for wings? Like could this save the bruins a little bit of money potentially? I think it can in terms of the bruins and the fear of him going to market. That being said, let's say we get to the worst case scenario and we get to next summer and posture Mark hasn't signed an extension and wants to go to market. The rooms don't trade in by that point, which I have to imagine if they found out that he is going to market. I don't think they want him to walk for free. I still would not be surprised at all if pasta gets on the market and someone gives him ten and a half, 11, 11 and a half. You have to imagine. I think it is definitely a surprise in terms of as soon as they announced that goudreau was going to Columbus. I think I figured out who first broke it, but it was, you know, God drove pic Columbus. Okay, what's the contract? I think we were all imagining. All right, if he's not going to Calgary, and he wants to go somewhere else. It's not a place with hometown ties like Philly or the islanders or anywhere close by. Before I get into what, 12 million, 12 and a half. I think it was. That was what I thought. Yeah, I think so that was the most surprising thing is just what the payout was for him to go to Columbus. So I think it definitely helps in terms of maybe setting pots around value a little bit. But that being said, I think you look at it's so tough one to just predict this market too because going to this frequency. Do we think guys like good Branson were getting four and four for contracts? You've seen quite a bit this year, especially if people throwing a ton of money at defensemen or what have you. If it got like positive marks on the market and he's a guy that scores goals can give you 40 goals easily year in year out of his healthy is a really marketable player. Has that offensive flare? I think there'd be a lot of teams if they have caspase would be lining up to pay him double digits here. So definitely helps that let's say goudreau didn't set a new tier of let's say it's 12 and a half, 13 million, of course. And David money. Yeah, that'd be good in terms of it's not something that pots are not in his agents like JP Barry can look at and be like, all right, like you want to stay with Boston and they want you back. I'm just saying, you could probably get 9, 9 and a half from them, or just 13 million waiting out there. They don't have that actual barometer of that tear in front of them, which I think helps out the bruins, but it's all going to come down to I think the ball's been passed in terms of what he wants because if he wants to stay here, he is going to get paid. Resisting the temptation of what could be out there if he wanted to hit free agency in 2023.

"Order to the bruins beat on sea on us media my name is Evan Marino, we hope you guys are having a great day, a great week. On this episode, Conor Ryan and I got into some pertinent topics in the world of contracts and salary caps. We got into the recent news on Johnny gaudreau. And how that impacts David Paulson arts earnings because I do think there is a little correlation there. We also get into Pavel zaka and if is he good enough to see if David grace doesn't return and also could he potentially help keep posture? All interesting questions? All interesting summer questions. We also get into if John Sweeney is actually going to clear any cap space because going off recent comments, I think that's kind of a clear answer. So that is today's episode of bruins beat. And without further ado, here is my conversation. With Connor Ryan. And

"And so at least there's something to kind of build out from here, assuming that there are future additions to the blue line coming. Yep. And again, you can't say enough good things about to bring it. Yeah. All right. Jack. We got to get out of here. I'm exhausted. I need to take a break. I think I need to have a cold beer. And gather my thoughts before I write about today at EP ringside and people can check that out as well. Tonight, but this is a blast. I appreciate you coming on here to take the time to chat during a crazy day as we wind down. I'll let you plug some stuff where can people check you out, what have you been working on, get the listeners all that good stuff? Well, if you would like to hear a take on pretty much every thing that happened today from John and gaudreau to I'm trying to think of the most obscure possible player who got signed. Andre cost is the one on the top of my head, but I'm sure that Hoskins aren't bigger than that. Are you going to write a bar now? So I think I might have to write about Austin zarina. I don't know if he has a player card. I'll have to find that out anyway. I'm going to be writing a bit of a recap kind of winners and losers type of thing for EP ringside. God willing I'll do it tomorrow morning and not tonight because I think my brain is about to is about to implode. But I mean, you could also go through my Twitter feed at J fresh hockey and you will find a hundred posts from today from this very exhausting day breaking down all of these signings. Yeah, and then if you like the player cards that you see on there, you could subscribe to my Patreon and access every single one of them. All right, man. Well, I love it. Get some rest here, gather your thoughts. I'm looking forward to reading. You want to be ringside, and we're certainly going to have you back on the PDO test. Down the road. So until then take care of yourself. Sounds good. All right, well, that is going to be it for today's episode of the hockey PDO test. "PDO cast, my name is Dimitri filipovic, and joining me is my good buddy Jack razor Jack, what's going on man? A lot. I'm like waiting for a John nigga assigning to drop midway through us talking about Nico's term. So yeah, everything is happening. This episode is just going to be three dudes scrolling their tweet deck waiting for waiting for and use the drop. And the third third due to that is my good pal dawn was just down, what's going on buddy? Not too much. I feel a little slightly refreshed after taking a nap before this podcast. And I'm ready for some takes about what we just witnessed over this day. It wasn't as wild as I think usual, but there was still some there were some moments and choices on free agency day as there as there always are. Yeah, I wasn't as well. I think cap friendly tweeted out, there's been like 300 years worth of contract commitments given out already. Obviously, there's some certain minor league deals and stuff that are inflating that a little bit. But we're recording this. It's like whatever 4 p.m. Pacific time on Wednesday. There's still some big names that we're waiting on like Johnny gaudreau and asam Qadri, John clink. But things are starting to slow down after the early flurry of signing. So I feel pretty safe about at least recording a show talking about what we've seen so far. So acknowledging that we still probably need more time to kind of fully absorb it. It makes sense that we're going to try to work through our initial thoughts here and just kind of sort through that first wave of signings and kind of identify personal winners, losers, biggest takeaways. So with that said, Jack, I'll let you go first. Give me your first either actionable storyline or winner or loser or you can take any of those categories, open us off.

"If we have the cornerstones of the team, we just need to build around that. And I think that has to be their attitude moving forward. Yeah. Well, and let's move on to the series one, we should give Jake auditor his love we've kind of mentioned it in passing here. For the series, he faced 41 shots per game. He stopped 95.4% of them. He stopped 69 of 74 high danger shots he faced, which is pretty nice. He gave up 13 fewer goals against an expected depending on the model you use. So he checked both the quantity and the quality boxes. He did pretty much everything he could possibly keep the stars alive and give them a shot to hang around. Now, I will say we were just talking about how the stars might not have put some of their players in a position to succeed. I think they did their defensive plan was well executed in this because the flames are kind of such like a north south team beyond Johnny gaudreau, like they just try to get the pocket, just go north and try to get to the net and just shoot it as much as they can. And the stars did a good job of like they were kind of gumming up the middle of the ice as the way they have in the past. They filled lanes and they were basically just leaving the rest of the stuff for you to gobble up. So he made some ridiculous acrobatic saves and certainly stole a few from the flames that they should have scored against pretty much any other goalie. But they did a good job of giving him a lot of shots that he could see in a lot of shots that were very manageable for him. So he played phenomenally the stars had a good defensive game plan at all tied together into this formula where they gave the flames a lot of trouble and took them to overtime of game 7. Yeah, I know most teams don't want to look at it like well we did our job and we're out and round one but they really did and Jake Brown and George deserves a ton of credit. He obviously didn't start the year as a starter, but when he came up and was rotating with holtby he was really good and you could see that turn around and like February when the stars actually had a chance to compete a little bit more. And he was a key part of it. I'm a fan of his also, you know, he helped my fantasy season, so I like him a little bit extra, but no he was fantastic. And the way he plays, it was how he controlled his rebounds and pressed me and even when there were second or third chances how he continued to stop them. And then at the end of it the way he just would flip the puck out of his glove at the end. It's like, you know, this is a young goalie and to have that little bit of flair in that way. Oh, you love the swag. Yeah, it's like he came out and he was like, all right. Whoever, if you weren't a fan of his before, you should have watched them and like whoever he is, I want to see where he goes from here. So I'm excited that he got that moment because he deserved it after, you know, I guess there was some doubt the last couple of years with Dallas and their goaltending situation. They had so many goalies, but now it's very clear. It's just grease and he earned it in every single way. All right. We did like 20 plus minutes on the stars and flames, which is remarkable. And I think we did a pretty good job of covering our bases there. We're going to take a quick break here, and then on the other side, we're going to do the.

"Tough competitor. But it does seem like for McKinnon and the avalanche if they just choke in these playoffs, you're afraid for bystanders for furniture for electronics for McDavid, there is a larger question of like, how do you actually think of this guy who otherwise has been incredibly special? And so McKinnon and Colorado, they're taken on the national predators. McDavid and his oilers, they're facing the kings, who are you actually more afraid for in comparison there? A more afraid for McDavid. The LA kings are interesting story. They've had the best prospect pool in the NHL for the last few seasons. And we all assumed that when they made it back to the playoffs, it would be on the strength of those young players. Well, it turns out it's the adults that are doing it this time. It's on Jay kopitar. It's Philip the know before he got injured. It was drew dowdy. It was Jonathan quick. The goalie that led the kings to two Stanley cups in the last decade, having a quick assault this season in goal. And so the only thing I'm worried about here for the oilers is the idea that the kings might have a series winning them and they might have a series winning them if Jonathan quick decides to pop off and take over the series and goal, which isn't out of the realm of possibility with the way that he's played. Now, Colorado is a beast. Colorado, it would be absolutely shocking if Colorado didn't get out of the first round. For one reason, which is that they are opponents of the national predators who, by the way, are not a pushover, they're a good underdog, but they be even better underdog if their goalie you see Soros was healthy. You put him in this series, they got to punch his chance. He's out of the series. This could be a real quick one. He's out of this series. It just sounds like they're just gonna get punched in other words. That's right. So the Calgary flames are speaking of an entire country getting punched. I mean, Canada, I want to talk about Calgary and specific here in the flames because like Edmonton, I guess we suffer, Greg, we Americans suffer from a little bit of ignorance. A lot of ignorance actually about like stuff to know about Calgary, but stuff to know about this team involves winning the Pacific division, having the third highest point toll in the west. So where are they in terms of possibly end in Canada's Stanley Cup drought? All right, quick primer on the Calgary flames. They got three 40 goal scorers. Matthew could chuck who is if you love your Brad bar Sean type players very much of that ilk, a guy that could beat you on the scoreboard or with his mouth or with his stick. If you like guys who no one else likes, in other words, this guy is a guy for you to like. If you're a fan of the heels, this man is a heel. Elias lindholm is a great two way player. He's got 42 goals. And then there's Johnny gaudreau who hit 40 goals that had a 115 points. He's an American kid, south Jersey kid, free agent. It's going to be a very lucrative summer for Johnny gaudreau. They also have a goalie in Jacob markstrom, who's considered to be one of the best in the league. And a coach and Daryl Sutter, who is a man of, well, brief words, but a long storied history of playoff success, including being behind the bench for those recent LA kings championships. So this is a team that could beat you offensively. They're one of the best offensive teams in the league with a great goaltender, so they are a very, very big threat to win the cup this year and stop that Canadian cup drought. Okay, so the Calgary flames, they get the Dallas stars, a hell of a match up there. But the matchup, Greg, that is, I don't know, pretty infuriating if you're either of the teams involved here, it's the St. Louis blues against the Minnesota wild, rounding out the rest of the bracket in the west. What do you make of this particular series here? My heart breaks, I love both these teams, man. There's so much fun. The Minnesota wild have shed the reputation of being a defensive oriented franchise and transformed into one of the best offensive and defensive teams in the league led by krill Capri staff who's one of the league's most exciting players. The St. Louis blues have had one of their best offensive seasons since the early 1990s when Brett Hull was scoring like 80 goals. This is a matchup between two incredible teams. In fact, so incredible that by points, the wild were second in the Western Conference and the St. Louis blues were fourth. But because of this vocabulary playoff format we've got, they got to play each other in the first round. What is that? Wait, wait, wait, so there's a two things. Number one, what is the adjective you use to describe the playoff bracket at number two, explain the playoff bracket? It's yiddish pay it no mind. So the playoff bracket goes like this. The top seeds in Easter version, they play the wild card teams. The two and three teams in each division have to play each other. So back in the day, if we were in the old one through 8 conference format, right? The Minnesota wild would be seated to play the Los Angeles kings. I think that is a fitting matchup for a team that had the second most points in the conference. The St. Louis blues would play against the Edmonton Oilers who were 5th in the conference. So again, that's a much more manageable matchup for the blues than it is in Minnesota wild. Losing one of these teams in the first round is heartbreaking as a hockey fan 'cause I think either of these guys could give the Colorado avalanche a really good series in the next round. Yeah, I mean, bump gets Greg is what this sounds like buckets. That's right. Does that work? Does that work in this context? It's a shonda. Absolutely. So Greg, another team that's just etching right now. Just like truly, truly in their feels, right? Can you tell me what back to Brooklyn, by the way? You weren't getting all this when I was living in California. No, this is probably, you are in your prime, Greg, clearly. But the biggest golden diets, right? Like, what happened, Greg, what happened to them? Because they're missing the and look, I know it's been a short history, but this is the team that I just came to expect them to be awesome every year, but here they are out of the entire playoff picture. The Jack I go thing, bringing him in from buffalo, controversially after he had this falling out with the Sabres. We covered that on this podcast with Emily Kaplan about his neck injury. What did go wrong here? Injuries, I think would be the number one thing that went wrong. You know, they lost a ton of guys in their lineup at a critical part of the season. Mark stone, who I think is their best forward, maybe outside of eye glow if you want to go raw talent. Alec Martinez was out for a while a key defenseman. And then at the end of the season, Robin later opted to get surgery so they didn't have him for the last stretch. So there might be able to look at this season and say it was the injuries, but it was also a mess of their own making in the sense that because of their salary cap situation, a situation that was only exacerbated when they acquired eichel's cat pit from the buffalo Sabres, they weren't really able to get reinforcements or bring in reinforcements off of long-term injury reserve. When they bought stone back in their lineup, they were moving around their players on and off long-term injured reserve just to manage the cap. So a lot of these problems are of their own making. But beyond that, I've never seen a team go from being the single most beloved team in the league, like the golden knights wear when they made the Cup final in their inaugural season as the golden misfits to a team where the vast majority of the national hockey leagues fans were just wallowing in the schadenfreude of the golden knights missing the playoffs this year. Primarily because of the way they treated their players and primarily because of the way they treated Marc Andre fleury, their franchise goaltender, who found out.
