"As it is axiomatically assumed that politics and religion did not nate for particularly pleasant dinner table conversation it is likewise assumed that they do not make for particularly pleasant poetry. Either but john. Milton sunders both assumptions in his masterful. Work paradise lost. It is a work that is explicitly political and inescapably religious. Indeed it is a prime example of that most unbending ideological and theological dogmatism that characterize the zealously partisan seventeenth century and yet it is magnificent poetry its beauty and grace are undeniable. Its majestic cadence. It's lofty vision and it. Soaring images have earned. Milton a place in english letters. Second only to shakespeare. According to samuel johnson. Milton's work is a treasure of unbounded breadth and depth and height. Walter scott agreed saying it set the standard against which all future epochs might be judged herald bloom has asserted if shakespeare is the center of the western literary canon. Milton is it's anchor and thomas. Macaulay said milton's poetry acts like an incantation is. Words are words of enchantment. It is astonishing that such a work should come from the pin of an author as controversial as milton who lived in an equally controversial age. A bloody civil war sundered was once merry england that calamitous time was at then followed by the rage side of king charles. Ten years puritan. Parliamentary rule and then finally the restoration of the stuart monarchy these events. We're not merely the background to milton's life. They were his life. He was an active passionate and crucial player in. Those revolutionary events and his poetry is indelibly marked by his activism and his devotion. Milton's intention in paradise laws was to explain the world of conflict in contemporary england. Through the lens of the great war in heaven between satan's infernal minions and god's providential kingdom in an astonishingly beautiful epic poem to rival homer and virgil in order to accomplish that. He not only controversy really recast the biblical narrative of the fall but he also controversy elite recast the english language as well contributing more new words or meal. Loge 'isms than any other writer in history. The imposed new meanings on old words like space goose and fragrance. He transformed verbs into nouns and nouns into verbs like stunning enjoyable and irrresponsible. He created a host of new compound. Words like arch fiend self delusion and lovelorn and he invented a veritable catalogue of entirely. New words like pandemonium terrific sensuous dismissive complacency laterna debauchery padlock and didactic. Milton died in sixteen. Seventy four just. After the second edition of paradise lost had appeared to mild critical acclaim during his life. It sold well enough to earn milton. A total of about ten pounds but over the next two decades the book went through six editions including one published in sixteen. Seventy eight with large engraved illustrations since then it has never lost its status as classic and it has never stopped being a source of controversy. Milton would not have had it any other way. "Tales of an america. that's unpredictable exhausting. Exhilarating and probably not coming back about a year ago. My husband and i began reading a series of books by a man who belongs in the top rank a memoir writers ralph moody's formative childhood occurred in colorado where the family moved and the dawning years of the twentieth century. The boy learned to rope in ride from the local cowboys. Who gave him the nickname little britches. The moody's later moved to littleton where ralph's father died as the eleven year. Old man of the family. Ralph took odd jobs and even worked one summer at a neighbor's home ranch but in nineteen twelve ralph's. Mother abruptly moved the family to her hometown near boston. Starting over with almost nothing. She established laundry business. While ralph moved a number of side hustles and acquired the reputation of a troublemaker. To clear the air he went up to maine to work with his cranky. Old grandfather when america entered the great war. The army rejected ralph. Because of ill health the munitions plant where he worked instead didn't improve his condition and at war's end he was a wreck. The prescription from the family doctor was to go west young man get plenty of sunshine. Eat green leafy vegetables and don't do anything crazy. Ralph obeyed every rule except the last the only job available. After he arrived in arizona was performing horse falls for the movies. Thus began a boom or bust cycle exacerbated by his friend lonnie an overgrown hyperactive juvenile. Who talked ralph into buy a model t. They nicknamed shiftless with typical ingenuity. Ralph managed earn almost a thousand dollars. Stashing the cash in the road cuffs of his extra-long levi's but when he in lonnie parted ways. The ladder absconded with the jeans. It was probably not intentional. Lonnie just grabbed the wrong pants while sneaking out in the dark with one diamond has pocket. Our hero hopped a freight for kansas. Where by luck and pluck and loans from an obliging banker. He owned eight horse teams and harvesting rigs by the following fall. All this packed into twenty four years for all his natural industry creativity and optimism. Ralph moody never got rich. But i doubt he regretted any of it especially those early years which he recalled much later in eight volumes of meticulous detail. Reading about his early life makes me a bit nostalgic for the rough and tumble snooze. You lose unpredictable. Perilous exhausting and exhilarating america. We probably won't see again. But god has put us here and now to look back with longing is a waste of time there may be very hard times ahead but we are part of a triumphant procession going ever forward with christ. See second corinthians to fourteen what we can take from ralph. Moody is the way he lived with. Eyes wide. open observing remembering and appreciating. Well it is a weird casting because he is so much older because he's twenty six makes this film which is so much older than twenty year old amanda bonds in the world of teen. "Mary record and myrna brown. Here's commentator john cheney on the double mindedness of man what happened to ravi zacharias on the american conservative website. Rod dreher wrote the only way. I can explain it is that you must be psychotically double minded or you must not really believe in god on quote. A one thing is clear it would have been better for everyone but especially for zachariah. If the scandal had broken while he was still alive that would have been an opportunity to repent but he had many opportunities especially in the last month. He must have known his time was short. He could've confessed or you could have destroyed all his phones and wiped his laptop the fact that he did neither of those suggests that he was living in an unreal. Place psychotically double minded seems more likely of dreyer's alternatives but double mindedness may be more common than we think. In fact it may be. The christians default position every deliberate sin from adultery. Tax cheating requires a certain double mindedness. We all know what we should or shouldn't do the elder who makes nasty comments about troublesome church members the pastor who develops a gambling habit the sunday school teacher who constantly talks down her husband. Anthony who is an hour a half on that flakes. When i should be checking up on my neighbors during a sub zero cold snap. We all know how we should act. But on the way to action knowledge can get sidelined into a storage room called holy to the lord where we perform our sacrifices in good deeds and then we claim our free time to do what we want. Ravi zacharias traveled. The world. spoke at conferences counseled world leaders and wrote dozens of books that sold millions of copies in that role. He may believed every word he was saying as the legendary head of ours. E i m. What's outside that persona. He was a slight elderly man with chronic back pain. That was robbie. Perhaps one justified. The other are z. Spoke a blessing over robbie when he prayed with women he was preying on when he told a potential partner that she was his reward for godly service he might have been sincere in an all too human double minded way. The heart is deceitful. Above all things says jeremiah and the first person. My heart deceives is me. Could robbie had made an idol out of ours. E given the convoluted reasoning we tend to indulge in. He may have indulged himself with a clear conscience in his holy capacity. He may have made atonement for himself as his own high priest crowding out the christ. He claimed to serve all idols replace. Christ idolatry is the primary temptation. This sad saga should if nothing else serve as a warning to the rest of us. Little children john writes in his first letter. Keep yourselves from idols. I'm johnny b cheney tomorrow saudi arabia will find out how the biden administration's approach to the country differs from how president trump did things and the red hot housing market. That and more tomorrow..

I hope that because if you're from again periodically since they are so clear in how they stay the nisshin and challenge the church listener. Kris kin singer wrote in to register his disagreement. He says that he thinks evangelicals have developed a reputation that over emphasizes politics he thought harrison and walker inflated allegiance to christ with allegiance to the political ideology of the republican party. It sounded to him like a call to oppose the biden administration and continue the division that is dominating our society. He says he thought it was a missed opportunity to bring healing to those wounds on friday. Well moving on now to another segment. That generated quite a lot of feedback. And that was emily. "In it from listener supported world radio. I'm mary record. And i'm nick eicher. Here's commentator janey. John cheney now on taking care of our land fall rains and cooler. Temperatures have brought a reprieve from this year's catastrophic wildfires but climatologists degree that the west will remain tinderbox for the near future some put all the blame on climate change but others have been pointing out with increasing urgency federal management policies from the early twentieth century including a row tolerance policy toward all wildfires stopping them out whenever possible by mid morning. After the day they were spotted. More experts are insisting it's better to let normal wilderness wildfires clear out the undergrowth quickly with no permanent damage. To mature trees controlled burns in farm country could create firebreaks that keeps he's seasonal blazes from feeding on themselves so why aren't controlled burns and managed fires the policy almost any western fire manager. And he's likely to cy. In frustration to clear forest in california alone would mean burning upwards of one million acres per year. The current average is about twenty thousand. It can take months to jump through environmental hoops and a plan to burn can get shut down within hours because of smog levels or complaints from neighbors. And there's always liability nobody pays for cancelling burn but a fire that jumps its boundaries can consume jobs and reputations as well as millions of dollars editorial that is environmentalism quasi religious attitude toward nature that demonize his all forms of development even responsible forestry one forest service ecologist admits that social political realities. Get in the way of doing a lot of what we need to do. The first book of the bible sums up what we need to do in one word dominion to the extreme environmentalist dominion means domination. It's actually much more than that. The earth is the lord's but he granted humans the privilege and responsibility of caring for it which means carrying about it dominion generates creativity innovation order and plenty. It's the unseen foundation for science and technology. It's participation in the ongoing creation narrative open to any human being with a mind skill. Environmental activists often cast humanity as the villain against victim. Who's fighting back. Mother earth is angry. They say but the fall that said humans and nature at odds did not cancel. The dominion contract just made it more fickle and fraught while humans can be the cause of environmental degradation. They are more often the cure gifted with the ability to self correct and solve problems. When reason the eastern united states doesn't have massive chronic wildfires is not just because it's wetter but because much more of it is privately owned farmers and foresters generally take better care of what belongs to them benefiting the land as well as the landowner federal land management policy needs to change. But you still have dominion in your own backyard even a well tended flowerbed please. Man and glorifies the lord. I'm johnny b cheney tomorrow. We're hearing about children showing signs of pandemic strain. We'll talk with psychologists about what parents can do to help that and more tomorrow. I'm nick eicher..

"Radio. I'm mary record. And i'm nick. Anchor world commentator. Johnny b cheney now on rules for living. You've seen the sign in your neighbors yard in this house. We believe black lives matter. Women's rights are human rights. No human is illegal. Science is real. Love is love. kindness. Is everything. Smug i think when driving by why would anyone post such an anodyne creed except as a slap to conservatives. Isn't each point a signpost for left wing values like militant anti-racism. Feminism open borders scientism. Lgbt rights and virtue signaling. but wait. I remind myself. There is such thing is christian conservatives sloganeering slogans do not an argument make much less a friend we believe is a proclamation peculiar to human beings. It's a moral standard for immoral species and this particular standard sums up contemporary western values rather well. Each bullet point seems irrefutable and bedrock but two thousand years ago other values seemed irrefutable. And bedrock imagine a roman patricians placard from eighty one hundred in this villa. We believe might makes right. the patriarch. Rules class is destiny. Death is real civil order. Is everything those. Were the principles of a harsh utilize. -tarian world that had no room or notion of human rights until christ came with the revolutionary news. That all lives matter to god. Let the lowly brother boast in his exaltation and the rich in his humiliation note. The lord's brother james. We americans agree in principle if not always in practice race. Riches and sex do not determine a person's worth but we forget how world is shaking. It was in a one hundred and how long it took for us to get here and how we would never have arrived. Were it not for the gospel. That now appears so outdated to cutting edge. Morality think how threatening our idolizing of individual rights would have appeared to a roman of the first century. But my neighbor doesn't care about that in this crazy election year. She wants me to know that she believes all the right. Things and start late reproaches everyone. Who doesn't once. I check my own heart for right thing ism. Is there anything. I could say to her. Possibly this high. I noticed your sign. I have a few questions. can we talk. Credos are an excellent place to begin a conversation. Many of us adopt beliefs without knowing why sometimes simply to fit in with the cultural milieu. That christians have never fit in in every time replaced. There's always some pillar of the zeitgeist profoundly at odds with biblical faith could be stadium traditionalism racism consumerism. But there's always an opening a patch of common ground. Suppose we start by living instead of merely posting our placard principles in this house. We believe kindness always love is selfless science serves. It doesn't rule. Humans are priceless. Male and female are real all lives matter to god. If we demonstrate all these the world may be more open to our own bedrock principle. Christ is everything. I'm johnny b cheney tomorrow democrats will have a much slimmer majority in the house the next two years will tell you how that might change things in the lower chamber and worldwide travel restrictions have altered commerce in myriad ways. We'll talk about a few that and more tomorrow. I'm nick eicher and mary record the world and everything in it comes to you from world. Radio world's mission is biblically objective. "And I mary record world commentator Johnny Vicini now with some thoughts on value of time. Remember the proverb about the slugger D-. A little sleep a little slumber, a little folding of the hens to rest. What about this? A little click a little swipe a little scrolling in skimming down your instagram feed and lost hours will stock you like zombies spent minutes like ghosts. Where does the time go? Really I is there a place where hours and days pile up to exchange for some other value or do they just disappear like raindrops on the hot pavement? Do I make time or this time make me. I use a passion planner registered trademark. To Matt Short, and long ranges ahead of me. Passion planner is big on motivation angles setting with space for evaluating each month strategizing for the year and setting markers for where you want to be win. Each month includes two pages for reflection on what you learn what you're grateful for what you do differently in my planner these pages go blank. Each week has a primary focus, a place to list positive events and inspirational quote and a so-called space of. Possibility. Pure white, the size of an index card ready to be filled with creative ambition. Most of these go blank to. I've just tried to get through the week. The columns marking off days and hours do get filled also the back pages for lists, budgets, and ongoing projects. So the planner is like a backup hard-drive for details. I. Need to keep track up. And passing minutes are like software always running always falling into patterns patterns because habits that can so easily sink into vast swaths of wasted time. Hours that can't be recalled or remembered. Just as my daily calorie intake builds, my body passing time builds my character for better or worse. Paul writes in his letter to the Asians awake. Oh, sleeper and arise from the dead and Christ will shine upon. You look carefully then how you walk not as unwise but as wise making best use of the time because today's are evil. Look carefully I purchase with spent minutes. How can I spend their more wisely next week or next hour Maybe the passion planner for all its motivational clatter is right to prompt me to spend some time in reflection each month looking carefully considering what I did with the time God gave me. Isn't that part of wisdom. Most of us I suspect are sitting on a mountain, a waste of time. The good news is that we all have unused time ahead though no one can say how much the days are evil. But if Christ is shining, there's enough light in each hour. To make good use of it. I'm Johnny B Cheney. "I'm Nick Eicher. Janey Cheney now on. God's kingdom construction plans. The parable of the talents in Matthew is the parable of the minus in Luke and the differences are not minor. A talent was worth more than one thousand dollars. A Mina amounted to three months, wages a goodly some but not extravagant. Luke also adds this context. The master in the story was going away to receive a crown, and his would be subjects had already rejected him by sending a delegation ahead to complain, we do not want this man to be our king. So. The servants are entrusted with a considerable sum of money to invest in a hostile society. Matthew's use of talents may signify the immense value of what we're given to invest. Luke's mention. A minus could suggest the limits of human time and resources both apply, but we should also consider the audience listening to this. Story for the first time. Look explains they expected the Kingdom of God to appear at once now that Jesus was there to claimant. No He's telling them, the kingdom must be built. I will build my church and my church will build the kingdom. Not on her own, not without the son's name or the Holy Spirit's power or the father's Providence, but the kingdom is hours to build. I, forget that I think Jesus coming with angels to judge the living in the dead, and that's the kingdom. Right? It will appear at the sound of a trumpet. With, the world in such disarray now it'd be a great time. But Christ. Coming is when the kingdom will be made visible and apparent. It's appearing right now. My business. Every day is kingdom business. That business has many facets making a living raising a family performing acts of charity serving at a local church, all in a culture that keeps insisting we do not want this man to be our king. That's always been the case in churches straight laced times as well as degenerate times. This world does not want Christ as king and never has. So. We build his kingdom in a hostile culture brick by brick. I don't know why he does it this way. We say, come Lord, Jesus meaning, bring it. But. He's not going to bring it. He's going to wrap it up as a gift to present to his father. He's coming to place a bridal crown on our head and take our hand to lead us to the wedding feast with the rightful king restored and the rebellious subjects subjugated. Don't forget that part of the story. Was My part, where do I built? My little section of this magnificent project seem small and insignificant, but his eyes are on it and a cloud of witnesses are cheering me on. I'm Johnny B Cheney. Tomorrow we'll hear from parents struggling to adjust to the new school reality, and we'll talk with pastor, John MacArthur about California's effort to keep his church from meeting for in-person worship than and more tomorrow I'm Nick I. "A satirical epilogue to the screw tape letters. Cs Lewis imagines his cagey old. Daemon rising to propose a toast. After the annual temperatures college dinner well committing his host. He complains about the disappointing meal. That is the poor quality of sinners that comprised it that municipal authority with graft sauce was apparently palatable much less the lukewarm casserole of adulterers. Goodness me what's become the brazen centers and brawny atheist of yesteryear with Lewis had been writing ten years ago. He might have screw tapes smacking his lips over the so-called four horsemen outspoken. Atheism but Christopher Hitchens has passed into Eternity Daniel Dinner into obscurity. Sam Harris is still dreaming about a rational society and Richard Dawkins is wondering if that dream is dio. A dolphins has been the scourge of what he understands as traditional religion only a few years ago. He applauded Dennis proposal to separate children from their fundamentalist parents but lately he's expressed some doubts whether the loss of Christianity would be an unvarnished good. His latest book observes that quote whether irrational or not. It does unfortunately seem plausible that if somebody sincerely believes God is watching his every move. He might be more likely to be good though he hates to admit it. Darkens has run smack into the notion of original sin which Chesterton described as the most verifiable fact of human history other atheist agnostics such as Douglas Murray and Jordan Peterson or even less sanguine about the basic goodness of humanity. Some atheists see themselves as heroes in the story mankind's relentless march toward the bright dawn of Unbeliev the world is richer they say lifespans are longer or shorter because sometime in the mid eighteenth century mankind began building an intellectual framework that excluded God then because humans are fundamentally decent things can only get better from here is about that Dawkins and other seemed to be wondering what if we humans are the bad guys or if only a few of us are really bad. How will the rest of buzz gin up the moral courage to stop them? Screw tape concluded his toast by looking on the bright side hat acheson is barely palatable but thank our father. Below unrepentant sinners abound. Their atheism owes nothing to intellectual. Rigor it's more a default setting rather than reshape outmoded moral barriers. It's simply removes them to their credit. Uh but getting all of us together in the same place demands the logistics of a summit meeting still my only complaint about the grandma gig comes when it's time to say goodbye. Say Goodbye is said to be one of the saddest words in the English language. One of the longest goodbyes ever recorded. Is John Chapter fourteen eighteen through seventeen. Jesus didn't say the word but I go hangs like a gray cloud over the entire passage I am going. I'm leaving a little while. And you will see me. No more. Even if his disciples had understood what he meant it would have seemed so wrong. Don't you love Jesus. Why won't you you stay with us in the same way? It seems not merely sad but wrong to part from a grandchild who just planted a wet kiss on your cheek. We were made for relationship but every hello will end with a good by. This is the way it's supposed to be. It is to your advantage that I go away. Jesus said Ed for if I do not the helper that is the Holy Spirit will not come to you. His closest disciples didn't understand and we may not either at first I but how about this. The work of Christ means nothing to US until the spirit breathes it into our hearts. The love of the father doesn't penetrate until the spirit opens up the eternal Trinitaria in bond and pulls US inside. That's why Jesus can say abide in me. Even while going away he he does not dismiss the pain of goodbye but he redeems it. You will be sorrowful but your sorrow will turn to joy that applies not just to the bittersweet farewells at a good old age but also to the weighted ones when sorrow is pierced by regret a fifty year. Old Old friend dying of cancer. No she will meet the Lord but still longs to see her grandchildren. Grow Up. Why so soon a father lamenting his son suicide tortures tortures himself for what he could have said? Why so hasty? A daughter caring for her Alzheimer's afflicted mother feels guilty for wondering. Why so long let not your heart be troubled fraught farewells are never the end? Much less the temporary ones at the airport report departure line Jesus kicked out the back wall of goodbye and his cleared a path to a better. Hello for world radio.
