"But Singapore Malaysia, I didn't know this. I was going to ask you when you mentioned this on the last show. I said do they know anything about the New York mob in these countries? Okay, here's a deal. I just finished it was a paid ticketed event rather in Singapore, right? Maybe 2,000 people in the audience my host that brought me in they said Mike we promised a Q &A afterwards but you know Singaporeans don't ask questions. They're very reserved. And so I said hey great. We'll go home early. I go out there. We were there two and a half hours with questions. Where's Jimmy Hoffa buried questions about being a poor they're asking about Gotti. Yes, you know, I'm not in Singapore, but I would like to know where's Junior Gotti. He just got in trouble. You sure you don't need to talk about this stuff now because we're gonna but I do want to mention fascinated. I do want to mention this. I know the Gotti family very well and you know, his wife Victoria and the girls and you know, we're staying in touch and they're great people. Well, wait a minute, you know, you mean Junior's sister Victoria, right and and John's wife his wife is also named Victoria. Yeah, everybody's named Victoria and they're great people. Okay, so, you know these people. Oh, yeah. Yeah, see this is the other thing too. Is that when you think about I mean, I think a lot of times when people think about coming to God, they don't think there's certain people that it just doesn't enter that universe right when you think for example, the people that have Ministries to prostitutes to people in the porn industry and you forget that those people they're just like everybody else. They're lost. They need God, but we tend to we tend not to think about people in the mob life as you know, you know them so to you that these are just people. These are just sinners. These are just people struggling to get through life and choosing the wrong path just like you did just like I did in a different way. So many people were just doing the best we can so to think that those people are hungry for the same thing that anybody is hungry for they are you know, and particularly the women I was I'll be honest with you. I was personally offended by the show Mob Wives and the reason for that Eric is because to depict the women in that life so unfairly and so on truthfully. I mean, it was just an absolute sham. Yeah, I mean the women in that life look, you know, they fall in love with a guy. It doesn't mean that they they agree with their lifestyle, you know, my wife never agreed with my lifestyle. She fell in love with me. She was against it from day one, but you know, she supported me in that life and eventually led me out of it, you know, and and these women are decent women, you know, they really are and they take care of the kids and you know, they take care of the family and sometimes they get a really bad rap and that that show is terrible in that regard and I spoke to you know, grow Bono's daughter and I said, you know, why did you do something like this? Because we were on a show together, right? Well, you know, I got to make money and all that kind of stuff but it was personally offending to see that because they are people a lot of them, you know, a lot of them. I mean, you know what I mean? You know what I mean? I'm sorry about that, but you know, I just know I should say they're nice people. They're great people. Well, listen, you know, and I know that that God takes the things of this world and and he can glorify himself, you know, the ugliest story God can use it for his glory, you know, and so when you think about the fascination with the mob life, it's just like fascination with celebrities and sports figures that when somebody like that turns a life over to God people are interested because they say I followed that person. I know that where I want to know what you know, if this could happen to them, maybe it's not so crazy. Maybe this is something that I can I can be open to and that's that's part of I think the problem with the culture is that people sort of act like that God stuffs for everybody else. But when somebody like you tell your story, I you know, it gets people's attention because there's a such a fascination with with the mob culture. I mean the movies that have been made by the way, it doesn't hurt that the movies made about the mob have been some of the greatest movies made in the history of Cinema. The Godfather 1, Godfather 2. Those are two of the best movies in the history of the movies. I would add Raging Bull and Goodfellas off the charts. Casino I despised. Did you? Yes. Can I tell you why? Did you see in the theater on TV? I saw it on in the theater and 20 times on TV. Well, you live this life. So you're different for me. I'm squeamish. I'm not when I see violence. It makes me angry because it's just it's and when I thought in Casino I ended up actually writing a piece really tearing Scorsese apart because I love Scorsese as a filmmaker, but I think he stepped over line where he glorified violence and I was in these movies. He was always on the edge of glorifying this life and in Casino, I thought he crossed over the line. But the point is that these genius filmmakers Scorsese Coppola most prominently they made some of the greatest movies ever made about this culture. I mean, you know you and I probably have you know, the Godfather and Godfather 2 half memorized because it's that good. It was brilliant. Listen, I remember when Godfather first came out it even changed to a degree the mob culture because guys started to walk around differently. They were looked upon differently because it did raise the status of our life in people's minds. It really did. I remember distinctly. Yeah, and I remember, you know, Joe Colombo sitting down with some of the people involved, you know, Jimmy Khan was was a strong friend of ours. So is Lenny Montana who played Luca Brazzi was a good friend of mine Luca Brazzi the guy who played Luca Brazzi was a good friend of yours Lenny Montana was his name and I would knew him for many years. He was California guy actually lived out there, but we were very close until he died. When did he die several years ago? Yeah long time ago, but that's one of the great performances of all time. It was great and you know in that movie that Joe Colombo had an influence the original script had the word Mafia all over it and Joey made sure that that was cut out. He didn't want any reference to that. Yeah, is that because he didn't want because the because the term is not used in no because if you remember the whole Joe Colombo deal he denied the existence of the Mafia when he had the Italian American Civil Rights League and this movie was coming out somewhere at the same time. I was about eight years old. I don't remember these details. You're you are about I think your wife's my age. So you're about probably 12 years older than I am, but you look you look very good whatever they're doing. You look you look pretty you look very young for your age wife kids and God good for you. Good for you. Well, I I mean, we're just talking about the fascination with with mob culture and I do think in fact literally yesterday. I read an interview with Francis Ford Coppola. He wrote he just came out with like a coffee table book about the making of the Godfather.

"We turn to the orange and souls dot com supports us where you will find chick McGee. What's going on over there? Hello. Stupid world record. A man in Canada. Long beard has outgrown his own Guinness World Records titles like Steph Curry every time he hits a three, it's a new record. Wow. With a beard now measuring. 8 feet three inches long. It drags and must drag. He's got to keep it backed up around his neck somehow, right? Yeah. Well it's a chin strap. One feet, what if he goes? He looks at the guy's ZZ tops and goes, big pussies. What if he goes to LongHorn where they have peanuts on the shelves on the floor? It drags. They call him the broom. Why would anyone do something this dumb? Sarwan sing has earned the record title for the longest beard on a living person. Wait a minute. Male. Okay. So with that, the a, there's a record for a dead person and B there's a women's record for this. I've heard a dispute about we all heard that when you die, your hair keeps growing for a while. Well, evidently, your skin actually shrinks is what makes it look like when you cause the moisture. Nails. Yeah. Isn't that something? That's charming. Could we move on? Ghoulish? Why is this guy growing the weird beard? I don't know, Tom. He is first. He first had his beard measured in 2008 when it was 7 feet 8 inches long. Jeez took him 15 years ago another foot. Good lord. It was measured again in 2010. Then he had 8 feet, two and a half feet. None of this makes sense. But right now it's 8 feet three inches long. He must be trimming somehow. Here's a picture of him standing up, and he says, though, he's never trimmed his beard. It reaches the floor. Wow. Man. Longest beard in the wild. Let's see. Isn't it possible that the beard and keeping that alive is an organism in your body? Wouldn't that make you sick or something? Or you've got a beard. I know. I know there are vitamin vitamins to make your nails grow and stuff like that. And for your hair, it's an unusual look. That's for sure. Do you find that attractive Christian? No, no, you know I don't. Yeah, so we'll go to luck to you, sir. My beard's not dead. It's very alive. Is it? I talked to my beard every night. But again, this is the record for a male. This guy's cool looking. He's got his the beard is, I think, is awesome. He's got a turban and he's got like a really nice suit. You know what I mean? Like those. Oh yeah. Not really, I don't know what to do. A traditional sort of yes. A traditional immediately, please share your wisdom. You just want to talk to him. I think you could probably find the history of the soup. He's eaten. And it's cool because you can see it. It's great over the years. Yes. So he has a picture of it, not gray, and now he does it. He looks very well kept. It's nothing like I thought. He is pretty handsome, actually. Right, right. His beard comes down in a very much tapered into a very wispy at the end. He holds it? He wisps. You wouldn't let let's have this guy. Would you have him in or would it drive you crazy? That'd be fine. Some weirdo that doesn't cut his beard. I don't care. Weirdo. How long is puke? Be honest. How about a really long fingernails? That bug you, right? That creeps me out. Yeah, that is weird. Very unfortunate fashion trial. Because the one question you have when the people do. We have to have a toothbrushes to clean the underside of your nails again. Hey, crusty. Welcome to plane speaking time. He's landed out there today. So this is the world's longest beard, not the world's biggest beard, which would be Elton John's wife.

Jonathan will be deeply deeply missed or how it's go out to him, his family, his colleagues, his friends, we ask that if you're in a position to help, you please do so. Thank you very much. Welcome back to another episode of open floor filling in for your host, Michael DuPont. I'm Rohan not gonna join today by a very special guest, he's a, I guess you could say he's a both a former and current Sports Illustrated senior writer. I guess I could have asked him for a title before that that felt like too much work for me to do. He's a professor, just truly one of my all time favorite colleagues, one of the, I think, best basketball writers of all time, Chris Ballard, making his own floor debut, Chris, how's it going? Oh, it's exciting to be here. Thanks. Thanks for having me on. Okay, see already two formal, already two formal. You don't need to pretend that you're excited, you know, just be you. That's it. That's all we're asking. Chris, I think it's still our most recent Sports Illustrated cover. The story, a story that's swept the nation. I think it's fair to say chosen sons has cover story on LeBron James and his dreams to play in the NBA with his sons. Bryce and brawny were gonna dive deep into that today, get some behind the scenes stuff from Chris. I also want to talk to you about some of his past stories. Obviously we're at still a little bit of a slow point in the NBA off season here, so that'll be fun. To talk to Chris about some of the great stories he's written throughout the course of his career, before we get into that, we still aim to do a big mailbag episode soon, so keep your emails coming, open floor mail at Gmail dot com. Chris, I don't know where we even want to begin with this. This story was huge. I was like, you know, every basketball podcast I listened to every basketball video I saw they were talking about this story. I'm sure that had to be pretty exciting for you. Can you tell me when you first, you know, when did you first get the idea? I'm gonna pitch LeBron and his people on doing the story on him and his sons. Say roughly February or so. After he made the comments about playing with brawny in the MBA, I've got teenage kids myself and so I think it's sort of natural as you get older as a writer to write about the things that seem closest to you. So the first second LeBron cover story I did was all about his physique and how he was becoming so exceptional as a player.

"Clean. An Oprah said in a statement, quote, I empathize with the women now coming forward, and I hope, justice is served. Lead investigator Paul miotti issued search warrants for the medium's various properties. Even though he was already in jail, the properties shown in the Netflix documentary were untidy spaces. It was clear John of God was a hoarder, and was very fond of his earthly possessions. As police swarmed his various compounds, they weren't necessarily surprised with what they found. One investigator said they uncovered false bottoms in nearly every drawer of his homes. And a hidden panic room only accessible by someone forcing an elevator to go down. Though it only displayed buttons for the floors above. That's so creepy. In the basement of one of the rooms, down a set of rickety stairs through a trapdoor in the floor, was a safe. After forcing an open with a circular saw, police uncovered gobs of money. 6 illegally owned guns. One with a serial number sawed off, and nearly 100 pieces of jewelry made of precious stones, presumably from the mines he owned. In total, about 50 million wrists, which when I did the math is the equivalent today of more than $8.7 million. Holy shit. I should also mention at this point that John's wife Anna wrist being indicted as an accomplice in the crimes of illegal gun ownership and money laundering. Though in all of my research, I can't find any evidence that she served any time in jail. But let's just stop for a second. He had a wife during all of this? 600 plus alleged sexual assaults, sinister trafficking claims. I mean, ma'am, come on. It's a hard pill to swallow to think that you knew nothing. Anna? What did you know?.

"So we don't know how to deal with it. Yeah, it is you're right there about it being like the purest feelings because I don't know. It's like I think about times where I have been in deep grief and there are tiny moments where I kind of enjoy it a little bit, you know? You're just like destroyed and then there's usually a moment where I go, wow, I like it is true that my mother has died, and I'm very sad, but it's also true that I'm very much enjoying that nobody can tell me anything right now. I know exactly what you mean. For once in your life, everything's clear. I was like, there's nothing. You're like, this is my excuse right now and there's nothing like you can just feel all your feelings in a way that I find, I am not able to feel all my feelings any other moment. And so, you know, but then also, you know, then you admit that on a podcast, you're like, wow, I am an asshole. And then it's fine. You know what I mean? I'm like, we're all a disaster and we're fine, but I do. Yeah, I genuinely enjoy talking to other people who experience other forms of grief because you realize that the grief takes on different texture for everyone. Sure. But sometimes some of these feelings are the same and that makes me feel like okay, that human connection still exists. We'll be okay. You know, Angela, John's, I've talked to say the word widow about her. It's such a funny word, John's love, John's wife, John's partner. I just went to see her the other day. And she was just saying how she spent a lot of the last year alone and that it had to be that way. You know, it's just how she needed it to be. To deal with her grief. And everyone's different. I mean, I know other people who when they're breathing can't be alone for a minute..

"There. So you guys just got enough. The bus in you're on foot heading towards the world trade centers yester- it had come down basically while we were on the bridge. But then than the you know the aftermath of that was was just again a little bit of chaos because obviously the dawson It was just a matter of now. We couldn't just go running randomly anywhere. We had to wait and figure out. Okay where are we most need it. You know where is because our needs very similar to military. We go with a life the danger to life. I first and foremost so now. There was such a massive fields of life danger. It was just a matter of command saying okay. We need fifty guys here. We need fifty guys there. We need you know it was so it was a little frustrating. Took a little while to get assignment. We just wanted to be in there helping trip up your flow. You're cute in semi said earlier. Not where you were but were some of your friends. Rhett in your best friend. We were they not in the world trade center when it collapsed but they were still killed as a result is that is that what you said were they well in charge eight hundred us. It's hard for us to really determined because the way everything ended up in the aftermath. Which just you know. A hundred and ten stories were now attend story pile of destruction wreckage. So we believe that some guys were common in the marriott. Hotel down on the west side would would connect into the trade center complex so there was also people trapped in the marriott. There was plane wreckage. That was in before the buildings collapsed. There was multiple sections of marriott that were destroyed by plane debris coming down so guys were being deployed all over the trade center complex for for rescue and recovery. So it's really hard to say like we never really i myself anyway was never told exactly their assignment and exact pinpoint location but it. It seems to be that my friend. John you know where he was found was in that percentet`y and unfortunately dennis junior was never found was never identified. They found their trucks Half half the souls that were there that have never been identified. The day there was a belief two hundred ninety three human beings intact that were able to be found and taken out and john. My friend being one of them so when sense his family had that closure they were able to. John was founded on christmas eve and he was buried on new year's eve. And and at the time i came home days later my wife said we'll have some good news. We're going to have another baby. And i felt bad. 'cause i kinda blew office it yet at st john's wife's pregnant too but he's dead and then that following that christmas when after they found him probably on december twenty six winning having the week to twenty seven his wife and my wife were standing face to face talking to each other. And i could see the horror on my wife's face and as we left she said you know i could picture myself.

"I think the supplies where the left always knew if they were able to indict our founding than the country can unravel this. Why ruin so interested in ancestry ancestry dot com right there so we wanna know who came before us. It's there's a yearning in your soul. The bible speaks to this too. I mean luke and matthew. If i'm not mistaken. Both open up the genealogy correct leader joseph for mary or through joseph and the genealogy of such and the bible's very clear about passing customs down from one generation to the other. There's a yearning in your soul for that so then you have the sixteen year old citizen. Who's looking around and looking at hope. They don't even have the flag anymore in the classrooms writing that down. Let's pretend there's a flag around. They say. I wonder what that means to me. And the left has always known if they can make that flag. Be something other than something virtuous or admirable. They've won the entire debate in one thousand. Nine hundred as reagan was was very clear about bringing back. This idea of kind of the magnanimous conservative. But the unapologetically patriotic conservative. I hate to. I hate to be critical of reagan. Because he was so phenomenal but there were some things that were questionable with immigration and many other things but just broadly in the eighties bob and early nineties. Do you think that we didn't take the government education problems serious enough hundred percent. Why is alzheimer's such a horrible disease. Because a person doesn't know who they are and so they don't remember their past if you can't remember your past that you don't know who you are therefore you don't know where you're going and if if your wife is dying of cancer you can speak to her and make pledges and hold her hand and she goes into eternity. It's as sad as can be but when a person is there and they don't know you are and they don't know who they are. It's a tragic tragic. Now what has been a deliberate attempt to take this four percent of the population of the world. The as long as there is an american on the planet. They know that. That's the place that i can go to escape if a ship is attacked on the high seas as there's an american they'll come save me if somebody's cheating on a patent that american will protect us if somebody's printing artificial money in the money supply any place on the plant. American banking will shut it down. America is the standard for righteousness. Just take away. What america is then we can go. We can give it alzheimer's so how do we do that. We have to go back and take all the people as to what they did. And we distorted. Lie about it. We twist it true. Is it true. And so when you i would encourage everyone to read david. Barton's book on thomas jefferson and when it came out all of these people really attacked him as he wasn't an historian and all he did was take what jefferson said and what he did and they all began quoting each other from these books in the nineteen fifties and sixties original source document. What he did so in order to take down. America you must. I say that those people that did these things. We're not trustworthy. Then it was built on. I lie so they misrepresent. That's why i was on the seventeen. Seventy six commission because we got understand. America was founded on july four. Seventeen seventy six not in sixteen. Nineteen one hundred and fifty years before thomas jefferson. George washington was even born so they tried to to cloud the two so the america doesn't know what they were therefore they don't know who they are and that's why that's the war we're involved in right now. So what is the most important thing that we can do in the nineteen eighties nineties. We knew that the educational system was being stolen out from under us. But we didn't want to get involved. Why why was there. This unwillingness bob. I i'd have to. I'd have to think about that a bit. Go ahead rob prosperity. They didn't see the fear. It was the ego. The embedded growth obligation. Things are just going to keep getting better and we don't want to upset the applicant and the country. wh- was always in. America was never the premier nation on earth until nineteen forty seven. And then after. After after that i it was in a telegram that was sent from the prime minister of britain was sent to to harry truman. On april seventh nineteen forty seven and said unless the united states intervened in the cyprus crisis that the crown had neither passing or the will to be involved in that the torch was passed to the united states of america became the premier nation on earth. Never in the history of man as one nation become the premier nation on earth. What it didn't seek it. The indian the the romans knew what they had to do. The french new at the british. Do what they had to do. The greeks knew everybody saw the single exception to that is the united states of america that was was given world leadership not because it sought it because people trusted and we didn't like it. We didn't like to pay for it. We wish it would go away. We've handed more more responsibly than than anyplace else. Now in the process of that we. Then we're we're in a competition for seventy years at the end. We could get into how it happened but nevertheless after world war two. We gave away for that. Eight year period if way all of central eastern europe to the soviet union. And so then. We had this competition going on ronald reagan. It's an and then by that time. And when i came in and said well we have to contain communism state where we are reagan commended. We don't have to contain communist. We can transcend communist loved and went after it and collapse. Now these people are in their twenties have lived in a period unlike any time in the history of the world the one nation a completely unchallenged economically military and politically on the planet. And so they thought this is how it is and so they think i can just go ahead. We'll take socialism from from venezuela and. We'll take this from there and they don't understand that none of those people would do. Anything ship is lost. If a plane is lost over the alps this afternoon or flying over africa tonight. They're using a global positioning system. Conceived and bennett maintained by americans. I if the list goes on and on so that how did we get in this mess. We took it for granted that freedom was in our dna that america would always be safe. We could make any compromise that we could make and we'll just let it go and we won't get blessed me my wife john wife us four. No more amen. We're just going to focus on ourselves and the process is about to come back and snap it. That's why this awakening this. That we're enjoying at the moment is essential..

John's wife should know. Oh yeah just to protect. Yeah and the baby. The baby right. Oh yeah they they don't they i. There's two things they'll do. They'll i try to be friends with the girlfriend or the wife. Sure because that would get them a step closer if that doesn't work which it rarely does then. They start getting nasty. I remember so many times having drinks dumped in my lap. Really at clubs. How rude girl would walk by and just keeps and sorry so got in the habit of sitting there with my hand always holding my drink but you know the funniest thing i think about groupies and there's a lot of funny things is even if you're nasty to them if if you john o. Nasty to them. And i mean really vicious nasty. They'd be back because negative attention is better than no attention at all. I remember this one time with band and we were. They played disneyland. Sure and lived up in the valley had a good hours drive and there was this one carload. I remember all four of these girls that always followed them home. They had a plan. The guys had a plan had a plan. And this is up in all pre thought out what was going on until it happened and They driving a van game band and stuff. Yeah got off somewhere around the city of commerce on surface streets on of course the girls are in hot pursuit and the guys drove into a cul de sac. Know this year and made a quick turn so the girls were in the back of the cul de sac. The guys were blocking their way out and open the back of the van and they had eggs and they had tomatoes and they had all whatever. Yeah and totally annihilated these coma gone. Yeah yeah and then took off. And i remember this day. Well that'll take care of them for a while about twelve hours. They were out in front of the house the next day. The girls ten care the took the abusing loved. It is something to talk about this. I got to tell you this. When you're there was this one girl. I knew when i was in high school. And she worked at the mall. I worked at right. And she was not unattractive girl. Yeah but she had jones for bobby goldsboro honey. I miss you..

"Jeff and Rebecca Mercer. Those air the four owners That's really weird because his story today Thursday morning in an interview with The New York Times is the exact opposite. Yesterday. He said he was some big free speech advocate insinuating he wanted light moderation for the site, which was the right way to handle parlor. By the way, we are a free speech, but today, he said, something different. He said that and we knew our touch, which is really weird and interview today that he got fired because he wanted to moderate basically heavily and get rid of Q and on and terrorists and all that stuff, which, by the way, nobody allows terrorists on their sites. That's kind of a stupid thing to say. Is there a terrorist site out there? I'm not You sure that maybe other social media platforms That wasn't us, So it's weird. Yesterday he was anti moderation. But this morning he was pro moderation. Why do you think he changed the story? He's telling you the truth because I'm getting a lot of emails from listeners. We leave our email out there because I love my audience. And I actually want to hear from you not through filters, so we get your emails. Jon e mailed me yesterday. Another John J. G. Even a guy who doesn't like us sky Chris sends me nasty emails all the time. It's okay. I enjoy hearing what you're thinking. They said, Gosh, this guy John sound so sincere. It sounds like the big guys gang up on him, Did they They really? So why isn't his story consistent from one day to the next? Yesterday wanted parlor to be a free speech site today he's saying got fired because he didn't want it to be a free speech like Gosh, what stories true. Why did he change his mind? About his story, which seems to change as he licks his finger and sees which direction the winter black well, because yesterday I did a Facebook live, which is the beginning of the show was appearing on Fox News. That's why Paula was doing. She was clearing my throat. She's trying to get me to watch the TV. They covered the Facebook Live. I got a Facebook live yesterday Wednesday evening to correct the record about John's termination as the parlor CEO, where I addressed the fax. And the facts are this John Story about wanting to be some free speech advocate for parlor is inaccurate and is absolutely false. So I'll give you the media guide in a second. Maybe some questions. You should ask John. If you're in the media just the challenge him on his story yesterday because it's changed today that he wanted he was advocating for a free speech site and let me get this straight, folks. You've known me now. For what 67 years many of you and I was the advocate. To make parlor. What an anti free speech side. Does that make sense to you? Does that make any sense to you? As as listeners of mine who'd been involved with me forever? Since that book one genesis of this show? You really believe it was me saying No, no, Let's make this site more like Twitter. That big sense. And John Nazi was on the side of free speech while I wasn't that makes sense. This is not the show if you actually believe that, Trust me. "It's dollar 202 100, you go and pick it up. If somebody calls you from the Cincinnati Erica, I think it's 513. And that's where a lot of my heart keeps all their dough. Um And so pick up the phone could be $1000.1000 dollars. You know, I feel sorry for I was trying. I was I was driving around today. And I was listening to Johnny can show you feel sorry for me. Thank you, Um not you. But I feel sorry for John Colville from the John and Ken show. Why? Because if if you listen to Deborah Colbert, John's wife. She sounds exactly. Like you. What? Yes, No. My voice is so much higher. You have. Were you born in these coast? No. Or you have any coast connection? No, no New Jersey and your family? No. Okay. Well, if you I'll play later on some of John's wife, Debra. Okay, so he comes into work. You have the same name. You have the same voice and he is. He's gotta be suicidal, but she's blond and she's taller. And I'm short brunette. That's right, but he can't get away. I mean, his only free time is from his house to work and from work to home, and then it's right back, Man. I know poor guy and I love when occasionally he forgets your name because I do that to, you know, with with you and Gina and you know, and whoever right? Yeah, but it's ridiculous to forget mining. I mean, that's beyond. There does seem to be an added distraction that level of distraction that that takes right did not know your night. Really alright. I might as well say this before it gets out in the news. But I was at McDonald's that yesterday. And I went through the drive through and when you leave the drive through and you stop there to make sure everything's right in the bag, and then you move on. And as I was looking in the bag I saw a big pink balloon like Roll past my car down down Olive. And I look over and there's a three year old girl and her mom and the mom starts running after the balloon, and then she stops and she goes back to her daughter. She made the right move, right. You don't want to run down, then all of a sudden, you know, your three year old runs in the street and God only knows what could happen. So she made the right move. She stayed with the kid. I got out of the car. Left my hot French fries and hamburger with ketchup on Lee in the bag, ran down the street, got the balloon and gave it back to his saving her life saving the kid's life. And, you know, I was flipping around last night on 245 and seven. See anything, but I know there's you know, there's gonna be some coverage. You are a giant step. What a great American. Oh, Okay. So you would think that you know the woman would be thrilled, right? And she's very happy that you know, I gave her back The balloon and the kid was, you know, was very grateful. No, she just a little tiny voice because thank you should probably raised so Then the woman says to me and she sort of emotional too. I don't know what was going on before the balloon got away made the balloon want to be away, right? That's possible. Why'd she says me? She says, Oh, she goes. You must have a daughter or a granddaughter. I haven't taken it. You didn't like the grand daughter. Call me Well, you know it's possible that I could have a granddaughter who's three years old. I get it, but it just stings every once in a while because I remember when when we had our daughter. We're up in Oregon and happened twice in one week. It happened once and Bank America in a little tiny, tiny town in Oregon, and that happened on the coast in in at Costco. Remember exactly where I was. It happened twice in one week because I was with my daughter. And they said Oh, you must have such a great beautiful granddaughter. What do you say when people say that to you? Well, I said I turned it to them. I go. You know what I said? I'm not a grand parent yet. But how does it feel to be a grandparent? Right, Grandma? What are you talking about? But But in Oregon You know, they start a little younger. Right, Like like my wife and I got to get this straight. I think My wife's mom. Was 15 when she got pregnant before 16 maybe was 16. And she had her and 17 right. I'll have to figure that out. Right, Um It's weird because my I'm 10 years older than my wife. And I'm only 5.5 for six years younger than my mother in law, Mother in law. Wow. Oh, that's funny, right? So when when we travel whenever we go anywhere Um, way. Listen to the same music and my wife's like, Hey, what's with the oldies? You know, we're not jamming to the oldies tonight. What's going on with the two of you? Is weird, eh? So I'm six years younger than her mom And I'm 10 years older than she is not crazy. Now. Has anybody thought that your mother in law is your wife? I not yet. Wide looking forward to that. Thank you. Well, you know what I hate when people call me ma'am, because I think when somebody calls me, ma'am, that they think I either sound old or I look old, But if somebody calls you, honey or deer in a restaurant does that offend? You know, it's the ma'am. It's the ma'am. I can't stand. It drives. It drives my wife crazy because I'll be in a restaurant. I'll go. Excuse me, darling. Thank, you Know, get a menu. And I know by looking at the waitress whether she'll be offended by they're not. And I nail it every time. I know if they're you know, you're young, Get a little chip on your shoulder. They don't like that. I get that. But when your tally ran down the street and you go Excuse me, sweetie. Can I get a little more water? They love it. Absolutely love it. Absolutely love it 100% anyway, So watch the news tonight There might be a story to local stations. And right now I will look at you as soon as I see your face. I saved that the Save the day Save the pandemic with that balloon. And s. So we'll just figure out what station's gonna cover that tonight. By very good relies on K. "Was moved most of your stuff sleight of hand at this stage. Yes. Had you taken in a young sort of built it up it Yes. I had a lot of restaurants like the bootlegger. Almost identical. Right? Come in. It's 17 like 10 o'clock on a Saturday and table. Yes. And they call them do once once a month and be like the magic the magic evening or something. It would be a set meal for 125 bucks. You get your five meals five course deal, right, plus entertainment man, And that was it tonight actually go table table and I'd hire What they're magicians to work with me, Take 10%, because that's what I do, and that's how I run my business, and I had a yellow pages ad. And so this is how I realized Well, this is great. So it's what I was doing. Birthday parties on weekends. There's dates I couldn't do. So I book the same. A buddy of mine for the show and take 10%. I thought, Well, I'm not gonna let that I'm not gonna pass that show off your show on say, I'm not available. I guess the new that's just great jobs me. So now that they trusted your judge horse they did, and I trust in my own, And some of them were even better than me because they didn't see me. He's not gonna work next week. Exactly. So that's that happened. And then I realized those cruise ships. That's where I thought. Well, that's that's it. You had a cruise ship. You are a star. That is this e mean, because you were getting at the time I heard Chris, you better change your making between 902,000 weak American. I'm Canadian, right? The dollar was stronger. Aquino was stronger back then it is still but a 20% difference. So $1000 American was always 1800 or 1500 Canadian. He has a lot of money, so I started sending stuff to agents always said. I gotta call Vancouver is also sort of work City. It's a port city. So cruise ships were they go from there to L, a Seattle and they also go up to Alaska Toe Major city for the summertime, you know, so I thought, so. I started mailing I mailed to my big agents of a guy named John White fucking dear friend of mine now, and he had everything. He had all of all the hotels and Vancouver. If you're a musician or singer, he had Don't you have any of those contracts and he was kind of the guy and then on ships. He had a big ship booking world. So all of a sudden, I mailed a bunch of stuff and I'm I'm selling myself way ahead of my talent. I mean, my tail was barely there, but I had the photos. I had the press kit all of VHS tapes out of market. Just that goes back to the days of putting your flyers on the newspaper 100%. So I knew how to look amazing. I just wasn't amazing. That's okay. You know, I was well aware of it. I still have so and so I mailed on this stuff. Was sudden. My parents went to the ranch with a wrench in Washington Does state which is 45 minute across the board. Okay, so that was our summer. Think it was all of a sudden They're down there. I got a call at the home by myself, cause I'm this time 19 e gonna call him John wife. Look, Is that the guy? No secretary, no seventh staff, blow him him. He's English, So he's a very obvious Hey, Murray. He's the sig filled of the grass and he's the guy. If he calls you, it's real money, and it's real. And so he calls memory SOCSEC police and I said I said, Yeah, it does. John Lightfoot like, Oh, God fill my foot. I mean, like this is a big gamble on the man is really is a john wife. But that guy's not dead, you know, s all of a sudden e. Yes, there's well, um, I might have a gig for you. Yeah, He doesn't trust us to force that. No, I haven't. Do you have to 45 minutes shows in a 15. Course I d o. Of course I two different 45 minute shows you say yesterday. Hell, Of course, I'm thinking quite a swell It's love $100 U s a week I was passed out. I never thought make that my lifetime And anyway, I'm just turned 20 right E man, This is really and he says this is Monday. He calls me on and he says you believe Friday Montreal, Canada, which is the East Coast is for the seals first. Wait. It's like L. A to New York distance for those. You don't know how to Montreal, you have the ST Lawrence River egos through Connecticut. Down Cape Cod Canal through and new is a two week cruise. Seven Down. Seven back was being seven days down in New York, seven days back to New York to Montreal. Two month contract. Eight weeks. 1100 hours a week. I get 15% Commission. And can you do it? I was like my way. Yeah, I said no problem, sir. Love to looking forward to it. I think. Let me check my schedule. Yeah, I'm free. Okay, delivering papers Exactly Get somebody. Oh, newspaper, and I was still a lifeguard at three different schools and bankers now was a full time lifeguards I was making at this point. Probably 1 $21 in hours, lifeguard. You know, good was very good at the time and you know, and I was probably had 48 5 hours a week, and I was really in the system. And once you're in that system, like any kind of good job like the unions here, you don't leave right urine. And so I was making good money And at my birthday party shows and everything and my business, my old pages ad and I'm still of Mom and Dad's house. So I had my little because with the yellow Pages that you have to have a business line So I had a business line in my bedroom with all my booking and out of a little office. No, no little log 20th time, but it's also a lesson. Yeah. So I need an 80 a case which is big tour in case I had none of those and I need to 45 minutes shows up 15. I barely had 20 minutes of adult material. I mean, I was a kid. I haven't won the best because I was doing I was booking seven shows a week half because I couldn't do because I was busy and I took it out. I was making life easier just sitting at home looking at you and I could drive now by the truck. That's why I bought a truck because I need to take my stuff around. I really want to 69 Camaro. Funny about this is is you're telling this story and I think about myself in the early days of going on the road learning my craft where I had to do basically the same thing. I need to sound system. That's why I need a van. The mic microphone I need you know you you have got to, you know, four shows and I go. Oh, yeah, I'm gonna wait a minute. We have two shows so I mean, but you take it and you invest in yourself. Yes. You take a shot, and you put your money into Yeah. You get the call. You trap yourself, You know, go. We're striking. Do it, little man, Can I And then all of a sudden, literally causes before the Internet..

Are you dealing with You know your own, um Dysfunction. In the first, the first part of working with a family or Or a family system with some of these roles is To understand you know the the concept of it right? So if you can isolate, you know what kind of role you've been playing, and that's the first step just like No admitting You're an alcoholic or an addict, right? Right, right. Way have talked about all these different types of personality traits that form because people are in families where someone is the substance abuser. But then the person gets better they go to or they come to a great counseling center or they go toe clinical solutions, and they're no longer an abuser. And then all of these different personality traits. Get lost something. We're not lost, but certainly have to shift is there are they? Well, they flare up. They want to become or exaggerated. Right. I don't mean to talk over you, but it's like all of these jobs that were created by being in a dysfunctional family are all Been written off. They've all been you've all been fired. These jobs are no longer necessary. We don't need the funny one anymore because there's no tension like we used to have. We don't need some of family hero who takes care of everything. "Now for Mental Health America Morning edition. Good morning, and we are back and we're so glad to be here. Unfortunately, Karen Edmonds, who was always always here. Is not here today because she's taking a well deserved break but filling in for caring we have we have Angie here we have Nick on the line. And today we're talking about a very, very interesting subject. I think so. Get ready to call in the number. Here's 1 809 2 to 66 80 you have to call in. Do you have a substance abuser in your family? Are you a substance abuser? If you have a substance abuser in your family, then your entire family unit Has built a nucleus around that substance abuser and they have all developed roles that you might not have even thought off. It's not right engine. For sure. So so how does this happen? So we think of poor substance abuser. Let's get the substance abuser help They go to a bay start to get better. But if you're in a family unit You have different people who are all playing different roles. The substance abuse your views are actually kind of sucks the air out of the entire room. And the focus of the family unit is on the substance abuser is I mean, do I have that right? That's correct, so the substance user or how people usually call the addict. They're what we call the usual suspect right there, causing the chaos with their active addiction. But we had found over years. Research has found that family members are also ill, and that's why they call it a family disease. It's not just the substance user. It's the roles that different family members play because everyone Suffers in a sense from addiction, right? And did you think it appears of listening to us at home? Did you think of that? Because I didn't think of that until Angie when she and I were talking yesterday, and she said, I've got a great idea for a show tomorrow. And I thought, Wow, I never even really thought about that. If you're in a relationship with a substance abuser, or you're married to, or have a father or a mother, who was the subsidy user. You build your life around the fact that there are subjects of user and you have to behave like this. So you become the apologist for the family When there's problems, I would think. Well, I'm so sorry. He behaved or she behaved like that. Because Bob Loblaw, right? Or and I did you ever think about I never thought about that before. Yeah, it is. The number here's was 1 809 2 to 66. 80. If you have stories like this to tell us, we'd love to talk to you because this is a very important show, isn't it? I think It is what you know, It's interesting. Um, in my past career, is an addictions counselor. I actually knew at the age of 14 that I wanted to be an addictions counselor because how much recovery and healing helped my own family is ever yes, I was very passionate about it. And this subject is really dear to my heart because I feel like Everyone in the family has suffered and everyone deserves healing and recovery. And it is possible for the family the hell right but it can actually get even more complicated. When the person recovers. Then it is when the person does not recover. Because Tell. Well, it's what you explain Well, so we're used to solve Give you a scenario. Let's say we have John and I'm just going to use this as an example. Let's say he's the father. He has a wife. He has kids. And let's say John's pattern is he works all day He comes home at five. He gets drunk till seven. He beats the wife and kids to attend. He passes out at 11, and then it's rents. Repeat, and let's say John goes into a rehab and he gets involved in a recovery program. And now John is this different person He's loving and he wants to hug the wife and the kids. He's talking about his 12 Step program. He's going to meetings and the family's looking at him like Well, who's this jerk way? No, the other guy. We know how to navigate this. You know this person, But now we don't know this Person and recovery who all of a sudden wants to be loving And once the kind of change the script and not only don't they know who that is, They kind of lose their identity. Don't think yes, because they were used to. They used to be the person that said there there. Well, hold his hair. So it doesn't throw up when his hair in the toilet, you know, and all these things that go. You know, these stereotypes would go with Being an abuser or being surrounded with an abuser in the center of your nuclear family, and they feel like the addiction originally stole him from them and now recovery. Taken him away. So is there some resentment there? Oh, for sure, Okay. Strong was that meant, so That's why the family needs help is well as the person who has recovered or is in recovery. That's why any treatment center, you know, work. Their fidelity will have a family component. Okay? And does the family go in together as a group to talk about this? You know, it's interesting. You say that so usually like, Let's say, John's family. Let's say John's wife and kids decide to go to, you know. Treatment Center where they have a family group. Well, what do you think? The first thing the family wants to talk about? I would imagine the abuser if they want to talk about John, right, because he's the problem, and they're very passionate. They have a laundry list of pal John has destroyed their lives, so they there's a little bit of being a martyr that comes with us virtually absolutely, and you know, and understandably so you know, but usually the treatment center will say. Say John's wife is I'll just say, Susie Susie, Let's talk about your behaviors. And Susie's like me. I'm the model wife. Yeah, I called in sick firm. I protected him at family dinners. I got the kids off to school. I did this There is nothing wrong with me. Yes, I'm I'm the martyr something you're reading. What's left of my mind? I was thinking Yes, I'm the family martyr Here. I am. And aren't I wonderful? Well, yes, you're wonderful. Now what? We have to talk about your maladaptive behaviors. Yes. And how do you know what are usually the problems that go with somebody who has experienced like Experience that and we'd love to hear your comments on this appear in the audience. And have you experienced any of this, and I know some of you have Call in and tell us about your experience the number here's 1 809 2 to 66 80. And we want to talk to you about this because this to me is fascinating. Probably because I never thought of it until you mentioned it. It's just fascinating. So what are the typical problems of someone? And how do you address those problems? If you're the head of the family, and you're the year the martyr? I hate to say that like that, because that sounds kind of unfair. But if you're the person who put up with all these problems were all you these years and you touched all the bases, And you did everything right? You could think of to do right and now he is healed. And now you have problems. What are those problems And how do you address them? So again, we'll just use Susie in this example just to keep it. So you think Suzy She's the spouse, So she plays the role of the enabler, and that just simply means that she enables or allows The You know Jon's addiction. To keep going. Right. Let's say John's hungover. She'll call in his job for him and say that John Sick, Not that John's hungover John doesn't come to family Thanksgiving. Oh, you know, he's busy working on a project. She protects him, right. And usually Susie doesn't tell anybody like this is a family secret. So When you see Susie Susie seems very together. She works very hard to put a perfect front. Right, You know, Like I said, she gets the kids ready, She says Fine, Fine, fine and the recovery world. There's an acronym and I won't say what it means. But it's Left up and secure, right, neurotic and emotional. That's what find really means. O g, and it's not uncommon for Susie to start getting stress related ailments, right? Uh, anxiety attacks. Um Intestinal issues of anxiety, depression she might start needing to take Antidepressants. She might even start abusing substances. Are you reading my mind? Because I was just about to ask you, is it do people generally start? Abusing something to fill in the void that's in the family. It's not uncommon. Isn't that interesting? That is fascinating. So we have Nick on the line. Nick. I know you're there. How are you? You happy New year, Everyone. Happy New Year. You and Nick A. You're a counselor. This is just you see this all the time, don't you?.

American Innovations
The Battle of the Cornflakes
"February nineteen eight in louisiana. Intrepid woman in a lace fringed petticoat makes her way through the streets of jefferson city. She pauses at the corner of magazine berlin across the way is the creole cottage that houses her local grocer. She smooths her skirt fixes her face with more confidence than she feels and heads ads for the stores swing doors will kellogg put her up to this and not just her but all the women of america is latest commercial for kelloggs cornflakes cheaply dares women to wink at their grocer and quote see what they get for nineteen hundred eight. These ads are bold old and racy stuff but it's working beautifully now like thousands of others. This woman's taking kellogg up on the bear in her case. There's something more at stake. She's been looking for a reason to wink this particularly sweet store on her for some time. Now the grocer dressed in a white shirt and suspenders notices the woman the moment she enters good afternoon ms coleman. What may i get you. This fine day like she's for hearst miss. Miss coleman says nothing. She just winks the grocer smiles. You've seen those kellogg's ads my right. Ms coleman blesses well. Here's what that wink gets you this here. Free box of kellogg's toasted corn flakes a gift from the company. The grocer fetches. She's a white box off the shelf behind him and puts it on the counter. Oh what most wonderful surprise miss coleman notices something odd about the box wchs it looks like a box of cornflakes but it's not it's actually a box of kelloggs toasted rice flakes rice flakes. I did not know they made rice flakes. The grocer glances at the box. Oh i'm sorry ms coleman gave you the wrong bucks. The boxes do look very similar as is the grocer gets a box of cornflakes. Ms coleman looks again at the rice flakes or rice flakes pleasant. I've not tried yet but it it is made by kellogg's so i imagine it'd be pretty good in that case. I'll i'll buy a box n._b._a. Could try them and tell you what they're like. I'd like that very much. Coleman appraises ten cents same as cornflakes moments later this coleman leaves with her free box of cornflakes and the rice flakes and an excuse is to talk to the handsome grocer again but what she doesn't realize is that those rice flakes the same kellogg who makes cornflakes they're made by his brother dr john harvey kellogg and the confusion john's created with his branding is driving his younger brother nuts will thought his battles with john were over but now his brother's stealing his customers and will won't stand for it. He's no longer the downtrodden little brother subservient servian to john's every cruelty today. He's a successful industrialist with money and resources of zone dr john harvey kellogg. No longer has an underling underling to prop himself up. He's about to be shown up by the least likely person imaginable someone. He spent his whole life calling worthless from wonder this is american innovations and i'm steven johnson on the last episode. The kellogg brothers discovered the secret making flaked breakfast cereal. The masses had only just been introduced to ready to eat cereal created by their very own former battle creek sanitarium patient charles post. That's bird will keep kello to finally break free from his brother and found the battle creek toasted corn flakes company. Now it's nineteen. The weight and the tables are turning on the brothers lifelong few as it happens. The country is in the throes change to john will play a role in a sinister scientific movement laying the groundwork for unfathomable atrocities within his lifetime. Both the siblings have lasting impacts on america as we know it today safe but only one we'll give the name kellogg the meaning it's remembered by this is episode three battle of the brand it's august nineteen a week and we'll kellogg heads down mainstream in battle creek. A straw hat shielding his bald scalp from the summer heat. The look on his face is far from sunny. That's because the cereal tycoon is preoccupied with thoughts about his brother's latest intrusion on his business us right now he's trapped in his thoughts to notice just how dramatically he and john have transformed the town of their youth back then it was a small country settlement now it pulses with the wonders of modernity red and green trams rattled down the streets lined with electric lights lights and telephone poles the constant influx of new arrivals fuels a construction boom in a growing downtown marketplace factories are everywhere and they're not only turning out the breakfast. Foods battle creek is famous for their also making the ovens boxes conveyor belts and other equipment cereal manufacturers depend and on and it all began with the kellogg brothers they put this michigan town on the map by turning the battle creek sanitarium into a world famous health resort resort they kindled local industry with their innovative ready to eat breakfast cereals but will feels no pleasure from their shared achievements when he thinks of john all he feels is spite especially today. The latest batch of acrimony began last year. You're will started it when he gave his battle creek toasted cornflake company a new name the kellogg toasted cornflake company will new john john would object to the name and that he would try to use his position on the company's board to obstruct the change so we'll get the board to approve the new name while john was away in europe by the time. John got back to battle creek. It was too late. John brooded over his brother's sneaky move for a a few months and then began executing his retaliation. Just before new year's day nineteen hundred eight he resigned from the board of wills company it told will he wanted to spend more time. Focusing on the status nut food company the food business he'd formed in eighteen ninety eight is an offshoot of the sanitarium and the first thing he did was renamed his food business kellogg's food company of battle creek. The name was designed to inflate his is products with his brothers and it did now. Wholesalers roasters and customers alike struggled to differentiate between the two kellogg companies anthony's even the post office getting their mail mixed up once john begins manufacturing rice and wheat flakes. He makes his packaging indistinguishable bowl from his brother's cornflakes. The brothers have now both threatened the other with lawsuits. Their lawyers are poised for action just waiting for the word as he makes his way through downtown battle creek. We'll consider his options. He knows an ugly court battle hurt the company's brand. Getty eighty cannot stomach the idea of being exploited by his brother yet again. What's more willis obligated to defend the interests of his investors. John mauer competitor competitor a threat to the livelihoods of everyone who works at kellogg's we'll cannot sit by as sales or lost as bad as he wants to fight and when he figures he has to take one final shot at reconciliation to avoid courtroom showdown his dreadful hand-wringing is suddenly intolerable eligible to him now is the time we'll changes direction he heads north of michigan avenue and crosses the spaniel arched bridge approach that stretches over the glimmering waters battle creek he then heads west through the leafy streets and pass the sprawling fenced off grounds of the battle creek week sanitarium thirty minutes later he reaches john's large gothic revival home on manchester street will marches up painted needed white steps to the front door that twenty room house john calls the residents he removes his straw hat mops his sweaty brow and bangs to brass door knocker john's wife ella opens the door. She's a stern woman with grey curly hair. The moment she sees will her face darkens. Oh it's you low. Ella pleasure as always is john here. L. turns her back to will and yells else. John will is at the door as they wait for john will in l. a. eyeball each other on the doorstep in frosty silence they no longer pretend not to hate each other eventually. John appears in the doorway or do you want. I want to reach an accommodation. This dispute has gone far enough l. A. snaps at will yes it has it's about time you stopped using john's good name to enrich yourself wills composure snaps me me. He's the one riding on my coattails. He never cared about the cereal business until he saw my success now. He wants it from self because he cannot stand anyone anyone but him getting the glory how dare you we both know that i am the real kellogg. They buy your cereal because they think i'm the one selling it. Your success is a parasite parasite on mine will looks down and steadies himself against the bile of his hatred. He reminds himself why he's here and forces out a reasonable tone own john. What you're doing will ruin both our companies. If this ends up in court it will embarrass us. Both l. sets off so do what john says. John cuts across his wife ellen. Please but will speak. Thank you let me clear brother. I will go to court if i must. I just hope and pray that there's a better way to resolve this after our negotiating on the doorstep john and will reach an agreement john will stop selling cereals under the kellogg nick in return will will pay john fifty thousand dollars plus additional stock in the cornflakes business. It's the two brothers shake hands but the truce lasts less than a month a few weeks later. John has a change of heart and hostilities resume for the next two years. The animosity subterfuge and retaliation escalates as does the success of their cereal companies under will's autocratic leadership kellogg toasted cornflakes company thrives nineteen ten. He's selling millions of boxes axes of flaked breakfast cereal every year john's enjoying more modest success with his newest product sterilized brand. It's a serial made from the fiber. Rich outer layer of wheat grain john's promoting it as a constipation remedy. It's a powerful selling point in one thousand nine. John sells around a hundred thousand boxes of sterilized brand. The sales of sterilized brand aren't much of a threat to will cereal empire but john's copycat packaging coaching is unlike will john refuses to add salt sugar and other flavorings to his breakfast cereals that worries
