The Sooners beaten at home by Kansas State last week, losing back to back regular season games for the first time since 1999 and likely and their hopes for 1/4 straight college football playoff appearance dashed already their head coach Lincoln Riley, had some opportunities I thought they're supposed to in the first half to really gain some separation. We were playing good ball, just not great ball and had some No chances to separate against a good team on the road, which you know when you're a great team. You take advantage of those and we were not quite area and came down the back and forth game. You know, a couple places we didn't make. You know some of the key plays. I mean, seven kicks in those field goals that we dropped two for sure Touchdown passes, You know, That certainly hurts really did a good job against the run game in the first half. We didn't do a very good job against Hall in the second half of a couple key penalties, and then you know, the biggest single play was probably the kickoff return just because we had so much Well, minimum after the turnover and touch down, you know, that was a that was a huge individual play. So a couple tough calls. It didn't go away. That's part of life on the road and on and again, you know, one place short and so absolutely our backs against the wall. Here is a football team. "Will dispute behind his but they basically show up for work at the being sports you know the publications Guy Pages Doing You know I I like and I mean the thing even even even frame was a was a liberal and you were the Democrats are behaving idiots you know I have always been more than happy they are more likely to screw up significant ways you like to beat up the over dog and the new outlets says on the right whereas it is true north it's I missing you know they they start out from this idea that we're GONNA WE'RE GONNA use a sort of news I say to myself I say to them I've never gone into a newsroom in the morning and been told so it's a whole different structure of the way to think about it yeah and and you know one paper called the Democrat and you know if you read both of them in when you are expected to present all points of view and talk can you know if there's if there's actual news to report and it happens to hurt one side or do and yet advertising revenue is largely gone to the Internet to what is that there isn't enough money to maintain that journalistic space and now if it aurait than those outlets really can't be trusted morning Jefferson I I wonder if I could go back to the conversation you just what the Republicans are complaining about is that from Steve scalise and they are allowed to ask a question schiff at informs is not to answer yes that's Steve Scalise came right on I've seen him say that is there not they're they're ugly because they aren't allowed to participate and the questions Sir you're not listening to the right news L. or as accurate news outfit that there is far more accurate than any other John Clark and what's he up to your guests in the first half hour he that would like a more conservative of governor and dissatisfied Kristen Guy I give I give a lot of respect to his life story and what he has done and what he's accomplished although I you know like I said he could cause a little trouble he'll certainly or you you tell me I mean you you follow politics more closely than I do I sort of ten Primaries are known for drawing out the activists the hardcore hardcore have a a political party and his kind of voter I many Republicans that even though they are to the right of governor Scott that he is their conservative Republicans who would prefer to have more robust policy on things like taxes so I I think it would take a lot for someone like John Clar to not let the incumbent just sale right through so I I hope that he something governor should worry about and yeah I mean two years ago with Keith Stern and they were a little worried at first that the backlash to gun legislation might take somebody who is a good strong candidate personally maybe a coalition that could add up here of you know the the second amendment advocates didn't really the pro-life advocates who are also going to be attracted to to a little more of this time that's that's the it it could very well be so maybe open up the bank book a little bit but the truth is I mean John Own and present yourself to the entire state of Vermont itself is is the Democrats have candidate Rebecca Holcomb Running to he weather David Zuckerman governor or attorney general. TJ Donovan would be a stronger as polling what they are hoping is that the results will encourage either Zuckerman or Donovan to Sir standing then that might entice either either man into for this segment of the Dave Ramsey show and we will be back after some CBS News at the top of our couple folks stick there's two shoppers treasure trove of toys gifts cards accessories and beautiful functional clothing darn tough and more upstairs at the almost world-famous Warren Store Warren Village Are we back I've thumbed it I'm sorry that's okay they're in Wakefield but we'll save them up for for another full presentation I and I really appreciate all your listeners out there staying with us been lots of interesting because we're not going to be talking to our folks our guests from the University of remind colleagues agriculture you're more than welcome to do so two four four one seven seven seven all to our show yesterday on the on the situation in the Harvard Union and how to react to the states act forty six law that combined administrations John is the one most likely would be on the block if if in fact that March and that's going to be a really I think it's a tough preschool are feeling I it's really painful and tough and difficult for the community and taxes within some realm of reasonableness in the in the in the School District Gold for folks to think about their annual property tax bill and how are you how worth while at the same time allowing folks to continue to live in the communities cases and so it's it's a tough call I really as I said the other day when thousand bucks a year or less to serve on a school board and I it's many hours and I think that there's real real value to that to that kind of approach to life around here members and so on you got you also have to stand back and just remember they're trying to make the best decisions informed manner possible and is it's not always easy the US House of Representatives continuing its impeachment inquiry in fact today there's it's a really interesting thing I think the you know I always read in is the is the body that acts as the as the jury so in chance for defense counsel to get in in front of a grand jury that's why there's a funny although pam sandwiches could probably be indicted for having too high cholesterol or something as a grand jury it is a instead it's a a bill from Middlebury has to say about all this morning bill good morning three thousand dollars income limit for stay payments I'm certain amount of education taxes oh I see okay yeah I get you yeah I was curious if that I think that the what's happening in my honestly is just fresh downward pressure on the select the same token you earn less than a hundred and thirty thousand dollars year it doesn't yes idea of closing schools simply because if you learn fifty thousand dollars what you're allowed to pay and so even if they stem was left open face was close discussion about people worrying about property taxes may be overplayed a little bit because there is this the Nana central tax rates and then there's the local hempstead rate yes the nonresidential rate is set by the state and it doesn't matter what you do hopefully thousand dollars a year per pupil and you're still gonna be staying the same amount of tax I and and if you're paying basically income taxes to support education instead of a property I'm ultimately everybody's gotTa pay into the system you know for our for argument's sake it's over one hundred thousand dollars because once you get to one hundred one hundred you know medium is like sixty five thousand per year or something like that and I don't know that that discussion has been had and people really understand that even if have those folks from Harvard on some of them are already clamoring for another show devoted to the topic on at least once before on the day Graham Show here that I think is really a segment this is something that we do in second hour every Thursday program here the white range of issues that do relate to agriculture sometimes a little bit tangentially we had were agriculture and and those kinds of pursuits and census issues thirty. First we are welcoming Eric a Bishop von Wet Bergh versity and and plant ecology plant evolution and within Eric Maybe I welcome to the program this morning I know we have you on the line right yes I hope Nando and his partner Karen will be joining US okay Nando has a mazing boot truck in in or EPA is it a are Epa they are I understand that that one of the things that that Nano and Karen doing is corn or they would often call maze for nearly six thousand filling crunchy texture or mouth feel and that's what in a rape is often mixed with cheese or meat on Nice his grandmother's array buzz really spoke to him he's earned developed in the US I simply don't have that same texture raw texture and quality of the of the product being made in this case and a anyway in the late morning but this sounds particularly delicious and Leagues I'm sorry I I and I'm an associate I also have a number of research projects with different groups and the tried to take an ecological approach to preserving the diversity it's a it's a fascinating area this issue of crop diversity and I'm wondering if you could describe so I- century yourselves whatever they had the year before if they had a bad harvest one of the things that has improved.

"WD Ev FM. Now back to the day Bram show and we are back on the phone we have bill off of CBS News. WHO's GONNA fill us in on the latest from from Washington? Good Morning Bill Warning. Dave how are you. I'm doing well and I wanted to check in with you to find out I guess the House is going to be voting today on sort of the ground rules for a public public impeachment process. Now do I understand that right. Yeah that is correct. In fact they have just now started debate within the last ten minutes or so on it's officially called House resolution sixty sixty minutes a resolution that would sort of codify in the words of some Democrats. What's been happening up till now and pave the way For the future of the impeachment inquiry which which is we understand to include public hearing sometime next month hoping to wrap all of this up before the Christmas break There is Some strong opposition from the Republicans to this They feel that the process has been unfair. They feel that the resolution really doesn't change anything and keeps The power of the impeachment inquiry in the hands of Adam Schiff the chairman of the Intelligence Committee but Democrats say no. I mean it's the way it's supposed to be you wanted public hearings. We're going to lay the rules rules for public hearings. You wanted to be able to participate. You can participate in. Oh by the way the President and Republicans will be able to do what they want to when these things had The actual articles impeachment phase. If there are any drawn up that's when they say that Everybody gets their crack at it but right now they're treating it as an investigation and the Ah So this process. Is the Democrats have essentially. It looked like they were initially conceding. Some stuff to Republicans about how the process would work more public more transparent more involvement by lawyers for the president etc But it's still not good enough for Republicans and and essentially This Yes some Democrats essentially say this was calling Republicans Bluff. They said it's not transparent. It's not fair it's not open. Nobody knows what's going on. So they say okay we're GONNA lay down. The rules was on this which is something they wanted. They wanted to transparency. They wanted the ability to have open. Hearings Jamie Raskin. A Democrat from Maryland said yesterday. Because we're giving you everything that you want he says but it doesn't seem like You guys are taken the Bait instead. You guys are continuing to argue about the process rather than the substance of the investigation and that's where the dividing line Remains even as we go through this vote today the Eventually this'll make it over in the Senate I mean really looks like the House has with the Democratic majority of the and and a lot of people really on board with this process now on the democratic side That you're going to end up with articles of impeachment being sent to the Senate. I saw something in the last day. Or Two indicating that Mitch McConnell it was at least considering the idea of a sort of an almost an instant dismissal of some kind in the Senate I is that still in play. Does that have any chance of happening. Happening were What's happening on that front? I don't think that would be politically expedient for the majority leader although it may get rid of You know the initial official heat I I I don't see that happening previously McConnell has said that he would You know he's got no choice really. If they bring the articles of impeachment they have to have have The hearing Yes there was some thought that Republicans might try to pull some procedural maneuvers to try to stop. OP It in its tracks but you know it just the most of us up here. Don't think that that's really going to happen. The McConnell is going to have to let this play out and then it's largely going to be out of his hands Because because it'll be the chief justice of the United States sitting over an impeachment trial if there is one in an awful lot of what he's GonNa do I would think would be just determined about. Do He's going to be very closely really watching what the polls are an individual states where Republican senators are up in twenty twenty. What questions is how am I doing on retaining my Republican majority? Yeah and you know I. It's never easy when you're coming into an election year if you're a leader of your own party to try to figure out how to proceed legislatively Because you are always taking those things into consideration. What are we move? What don't we move who's vulnerable If they have to vote against it I mean who can we let slide if they have to vote. Vote against it Who Do we have to hold their toes to the fire? A you know just crank the amp to eleven when you talk about impeachment and all of this because it's such a hot button issue so now well I don't envy Mitch McConnell job I mean yes I mean he certainly has the stature and experience to get it done but It's it's not a fun job when you're when you're trying to hold all the horses corral trying to hold all the horses in Corral Bill rakoff thanks very much for joining me this morning I appreciate it thank you day. Alrighty let's turn our attention now to Our next guest John. Walters is a blogger. He has the Vermont Political Observer blog and He's uh he's he's been a guest on Dave grab show here probably a dozen times now roughly year and a half I've been doing this and I really appreciate a Jon. Kamen back in his new guys I see for of course for a while for the first For the first part of my career talk radio I was having a mind. Is the columnist to the fair game. Columnist for seven days is end There's been a recent change. They're actually a little bit of a twist on that change announced this week. What's going on John Well I can tell you secondhand from what I've read They at the time When I left seven days in August They weren't sure whether they were going to continue the fair game. Column or not and They announced their decision yesterday. They are killing the column They say there is some chance of bringing back at some point in the future. But I doubt that they have if To fill my opening they have hired another reporter for their statehouse bureau in that reporter Colin Flanders Will be doing straight straight journalism They're going to kill the column and I appreciate the effort. I really honored the effort of seven days to maintain in a robust news staff in these times when we have fewer and fewer reporters all the time I I do think that The Vermont you know Those who are interested in Vermont Politics Miss Fair Game. That's a column with twenty five years of history behind it You know I was only there air for the last couple of years. So I'm at the tail end of that of that train but But it it was a unique place that a lot of people turn to for for what's going on and sort of explaining how and why and maybe some of the background behind What's going on and and there? It was really about the only place for regular sort of political analysis and commentary in Vermont media so they will have more journalism there which will have its is benefits but Sorry to see fair game go. I think it is a sign of the of the changing media diet in Vermont. I mean it used to be You know when I was first working in Vermont as a reporter back in the eighties working for the Associated Press We'd get our Daily News coverage what's going on at the State House From a a three person We were covering it at the. Ap Of course The Times Argus in Rutland Herald had a three person bureau in failure covering the covering the State House and all the political goings on in Vermont. And of course the Press at the time had three reporters working under the Golden Dome in Montpellier and The Times Argus Argus and the free press have Scaled back to all the time. Darkness is really scaled back nothing in terms of its own State House Coverage The and the and the free press is pretty close to that at these days And so there's this void of of sort of standard WHO's filing what bill and he's in? What lobbyists are pushing in which bill and and WHO's making the trade offs and all that kind of stuff And the There is a void there that that needs to film. I think seven days just as sort of seeing that obviously we now have a new entry on recent entry on the scene is digger and vp are is beefed up at staff Some so so it's not. It's not a complete void but Boy I agree. There's just a lot less daily coverage of the of Vermont Political and government news news than there was thirty years ago and And I think seven days is probably seeing that but back in those days we would rely on on our on the east. Stop the free. Press the the the Rutland Herald and we would we would be watching the news flow in those places and then we pick up What was it called back then the vanguard presser wile or Vermont I wasn't seven days yet but it was sort of the precursor of seven days. And we'd we'd pick up that paper and and and really that was the first place you turn in the paper. Was that column and by Peter Frayne. Yeah for a long time. For a long time frame had that column column and and it was funny irreverent and and just you know really sorta tasted like frosting on the cake of the regular coverage in the other publications and and And and that that was pretty. Those are pretty pretty heady days. I don't think we appreciate it enough back then or something. Yeah Yeah it's I mean digger is the only outlet these days. It's really sort of doing the meat and potatoes. You know the press conferences and covering the big bills and the latest developments on a day to day basis Yep which there used to be a lot of reporters covering and You know what you get. Is You get the bigger slice of whatever the top stories are and then there's a lot of have no coverage whereas in the old days if you had a three person bureau you would have one reporter who would cover the top story but the have a couple of other reporters who were poking around around and going to other hearings and you know following developments that maybe weren't quite Rypien and So there was a lot more depth to the news coverage now and I think as digger bigger takes on tries to do the meat and potatoes and also provides some you know depth and context seven days is positioning itself. I think as as a An exploratory place for in-depth coverage of specific stories in specific issues so They see more value for themselves in the readers in In adding other reporter to their to their reporting team than in maintaining column. There is another uh another force entering the scene interrupt journalism in recent years which I I'm not convinced. His altogether healthy because it is different is really not not journalism in the traditional sense because journalism in the traditional sense You know people will dispute behind us but they Basically a show up for work at the being being at the beginning of the day. And you're not supposed to be setting out with an ideological agenda and some of the new entrance on the scene. You know true north reports sports You know the publications Guy Pages doing guys thoughtful Fella and he has but he definitely has a point of view and and he shows up with a conservative Virginia and all the news read for him pretty much has that spin on it and I mean the thing even even even Frayne was a was a liberal and you were you lean liberal John And and in your in your seven days column in in your blog but the thing is is that you are you allow yourself occasionally to write a column saying that the the Democrats are behaving idiots. You know I have always been More than happy to call the Democrats out on their stuff As anyone else outs and in fact crime perhaps more so because the Democrats have so much power That they are more likely to screw up and significant ways. You like to meet up the over dog. And and that's you know afflict the comfortable as an old principle in journalism and and You know and I I actually think that that at these new outlets says on the right whereas it is true. North it's I missing one. There's a Oh this Thing Bob rainiers doing now it's a online Vermont News presentation that he's doing and you know they they start out from this idea that we're GONNA WE'RE GONNA use a sort of news was like vehicle to push a conservative agenda. Yeah and and that's something that you know..

"In for your daydream today. In our second hour. We're going to be talking with just diamond stone of the Vermont Liberty Union Party and Neil Johnson of the Green Mountain Party <hes> <hes> and we're GONNA be talking about how the two party system has had an effect on minor parties in the state of Vermont in kind of the challenges that they have in getting their message out and getting the attention of others so <hes>. I'm expecting that to be a pretty good conversation in a few minutes. We're going to be talking to <hes> Talk Media News about things going on in Washington D._C.. But we wanted to talk briefly <hes> kind of following up on my conversation that we were having earlier about Bernie Sanders where <hes> one of our one of our callers was <hes> took offense to <hes> John Walters <hes> comment that they're conspiracy theorists out there <hes> who are Kinda pull into the left on on certain things and <hes> the felt that the the call was directed at him and it was not it was <hes> I think date and I think John was talking in general terms we apologize to the caller feeling like <hes> it was directed at him <hes> but it was just kind of you know off the Cup off the cuff kind of comment but right now we're going to go down to Washington and talk to Bob of nee of Talk Media News Bob. How are you today? I am Great Steve. How are you? I'm very well thank you. I'm still trying to recuperate a little bit from the fourth of July weekend and all the good weather. We've been having here in Vermont so yeah so what's going on. Well few things the Iranians <hes> played cat-and-mouse with the British Iranians tried to stop one of their tankers. The British had a worship behind the tanker. It stopped all of that then the British stopped and Iranian vessel that was headed they think to Syria which would have violated sanctions of <hes> you know United States sanctions of transmitting oil and carrying it so they did that. <hes> the reason Asian this is a three really of interest is because up to now the Iranians really have had you know the battle back and forth between us and them and now it's between them and the British so obviously things in Iran are getting adding more <hes> in the hands of the clerics who would do this kind of thing versus the moderates who really wouldn't do this type of thing well and you were talking about it being a bit of cat and mouse. What's what's it's the cat and mouse aspect of this at this point well? It's the fact that you know the Iranians are saying to the British. We're out of the nuclear deal with America so we want our own deal and you know if we if you don't do that we're starting to enrich more uranium uranium. We're starting to make more centrifuges. We will go more into a nuclear Iran so you know part of the cat and mouse game and now of course it's you know the Iranians shaking the British ship and the British chasing their ships so it the prior to this is really just more. That's been US versus the Ronnie Irani Ins and it's been that way for a little while now but it definitely feels like it's escalating it does <hes> the other story of interest in in Polit- political domestic <hes> this was really something else and only because you know for my aspect I served in the House with Nancy Pelosi and <hes> in a private meeting Speaker Pelosi said that if you have questions come see see me and basically I'm going to paraphrase here you know we don't need to be talking about <hes> members out there you know in the social media context and the response by A._F._C. was fascinating. She said at first I thought that the speaker was trying to keep progressives. Arm's distance basically protect some of the moderate democratic members she said now. She said she believes that speaker. Pelosi is singling out newly elected democratic women of Color uh-huh honestly <hes> that's bizarre <hes> I served eleven years with Nancy Pelosi anybody that knows Nancy Pelosi knows that I really don't think she singles out women of Color. You know so this is this is sort of the beginning of a civil war internally well just just when we need more turmoil right sure of course you can't have it with their public as you have to have it inter-party to the democratic size joining the Republican Cypher inter-party fights catch right right all right well Bob Ney of talk media news thanks so much my guest the second hour or going to be <hes> Neil Johnson of the Green Mountain Party and just diamond stone of the Vermont Liberty Union Party and they are both represent minor what are called minor parties in the state <hes> and with that comes some challenges in in large part <hes> they have a hard harder time getting the message out there <hes> and part of that's going to be <hes> the blame put to the media and part of that is <hes> just kind of the challenges of in general of of how this two party system is kind of stopping its way through everything in shouting down lots of other voices so I'm expecting this to be a pretty good conversation. Neil Johnson is here in the studio with me and just diamond stone joins us on the phone. Welcome to both of you. Thank you hi good morning good morning so just I'm going to start with you and ask you to tell me a little bit about the Vermont Liberty Union Party. Well sure thank you <hes> I guess I I I just want to thank you for <hes> taking the time to <hes> to bring this conversation to the four it's very important and I also think folks are listening and <hes> to people who who for fifty years <hes> Fifty Years Ago Birth Liberty Union party out of a vision of a world free from war and <hes> and <hes> since then the hundreds and hundreds of people who have supported the party and kept kept it vital so huge thanks before we begin yeah <hes> so as far as the party in a Har Hard to put that in a nutshell but <hes> we began out of a response to the Vietnam War and <hes> Bill Mayer who was the first Democrat thick candidate to be elected. I believe either the State House or Senate who was not re elected or not renominated by the Democratic Party because of his strong position on <hes> on war and for that reason <hes> he became the catalyst and he and a handful of other people said we really need another vehicle to voice these important messages and thus came the Liberty Union Party so <hes> I did hear you mentioned that it was a minor party and I I want to be for people to be very clear that it has for the most part been a major party in the state of Vermont. It wasn't until two thousand thirteen <hes> that we really <hes> began to doc more consistently have minor party status and <hes> yes. You're right. We can <hes> point the finger to the media that often either Vilnai's is or <hes> <hes> the little the <hes> creative thinking of alternative party candidates but we can also <hes> give credit to the secretary of State's office that I believe it was the secretary of State's office that was responsible for creating creating consistently more limitations or requirements that make it ever increasingly difficult for major-party major parties to remain major parties <hes> which is what happened to us in two thousand thirteen when the requirements <hes> became vastly more difficult <hes> in that we had to organize thirty town committees in seven different counties <hes> rather than the fifteen that had been required for so long <hes> and you know this is devastating to the conversation it's it it only hurts for monitor's because we no longer get a chance to hear what all of our options Tim there but we're gonNA come back and talk about that at length but now I want to switch over to Neil Johnson and have him tell us a little bit about the Green Mountain Party. Hey Steve thanks so much for having us. I can't express Oh what a treat it as to be able to take them on the air when we were running last year <hes> well. I tell you a little bit about the party. I I guess the our our our situation had been that were dealing with some local issues and just the public in general there was no organization and we found that the select board was not responsive whatsoever and we address some other issues and it Kinda lead to becoming a political party one of the things our platform was to try to make Vermont affordable to address the school funding issue and to <hes> assessor drug issues issues alcohol and drug issues and I know the governor rightfully has spoken about one. I think one is born every day addicted to hardcore drug and he's not getting any support and it is an issue in our state so those those are the three the three major issues under those we have other. Yes right so what what community <hes> specifically was the root of of this discussion well we were in a mad river valley and it's not to say that we don't Love Valley. We we do tremendously but we had serious issues over the years. They wanted a whole water system in sewer system. You know we were told it was going to be economical economical it wasn't they got one of it can't afford it. Then we went to town hall that was <hes> The didn't budge on anything at all as far as one point six million for fifteen hundred people they wouldn't make any <unk> any concessions whatsoever whatsoever and then kind of straw that broke the camel's back pocket park and our pocket park consisted of grant money which is kind of everybody thinks it's free money from the state and it was <hes> repaying a million dollars as per acre repaid twenty thousand dollars for this rock in the floodway and the budget was two hundred thousand dollars for plantings and a couple of park benches and we just this is crazy and then immediately when we were on front porch form and and I just basically re this is before becoming as a party we stated the the budget exactly what was written in the paper and we just we said you know we believe that I think it was forty five thousand dollars for engineering and permeating for this this little park that was not big not much bigger than these two offices we're looking at was insane and at that point I was taken off front porch form and told that <hes> I was no hunger able to communicate indicating valley well so let's talk a little bit about that that that the Democrats and the Republicans in the.

"Down in Florida. I'm John Walters. Fox News the nose of the plane in the water the slides deploy is it. The Jacksonville sheriff's office is saying that all of the roughly one hundred and fifty people on board that plane are alive and accounted for. But what a scary few moments that must have been this. Boeing seven thirty-seven slid off the runway into the Saint John's river just outside of Jacksonville, Florida. The plane was coming from naval station Guantanamo Bay in Cuba and was trying to land at naval air station. Jacksonville when it slipped off the end of the runway. Trump keeps trying to sell his border wall as a solution to drugs

"One of our top stories. President Trump has said time and time again that one of the reasons we need border security is to stop the inflow of drugs into our country. Former drug czar, John Walters tells Fox News something needs to be done to stop the drugs from coming into our country. Two hundred people are dying day of overdoses, let alone uncounted thousands being addicted and people are saying this isn't a real problem that's kind of horrifying that. Our national leaders are just dismissing the massive amounts of death here.

"Now, I would say the differences Brian Kelly had already gone to a national title game at that point. So I don't know the differences Brian Kelly a lot of people wanted him early on. Whereas I don't think anybody USC was really in clay Hilton's corner that strongly I mean. It would be very not very uncharacteristic of a major college football program. If he actually did bring him back even even at six and six because the fans have have already given up on him. So how you going to sell people on next season when everybody's already kind of made up their minds that he's not not the guy that's gonna lead them into glory. So by the way, real quick on that. Well, you mentioned that you had a down year actually down is an interesting to victory. He's had they're nine and five ten and four than six and seven three and nine in two thousand sixteen spec to six and seven and a ball game last year. And now here they are nine and one top fifteen in the people, and the interesting thing is meant wells made his reputation on defense. But this year's team they put up eight hundred yards this past weekend. They are one of the most powerful offense of teams in the country. All right. You want your shout outs? Yes. All right. Let me go. I I want you to go first. Yes. Okay. My shout out is to Pat, nor dizzy. The Pittsburgh head coach a lot of people have written them off sitting people wonder why he got the contract extension. But in the last really since September ended the Panthers are playing about as well to anybody outside of Clemson they beat Syracuse, which is looks like a really good win. They gave Notre Dame their toughest game on the road. Barely lost at beat Duke one at West Virginia was was right and just blew out Virginia Tech and all of a sudden, Pat or disease run game is out of control against Duke. They ran for almost five hundred yards and against but Foster's defense past weekend. You know, maybe yards per carry the averaged I know they had four hundred ninety two yards. Holy moly. I care too. Dave wants to know that that that four hundred ninety two yards. The vote since Tony Dorsett was back in the backfield for them. Yeah. So shout out depend doozy. He's gotta go a little bit. We'll see. I mean, look by the way, they did if I'm not mistaken. Didn't they knock off the Clemson team at won the national title? They did they did. So it's a weird thing where they and then they not they knocked off Tannen. Oh Miami last year. So they've had these moments. They just haven't really been able to string it all together. But right now, it does look like they're going to win that division, by the way that we I don't know if it's if even grammatically correct call wants that Nordea press predecessor or he's being his predecessor because there was like eleven coaches, and you're spending was not his predecessor. But once had that giant killer, you know, fly in the moment win over West Virginia that that you know when he was a pit. So don't cannot out the Panthers for for shocking us. Okay. Am I shout? I was going to go to Tony Sanchez at UNLV. It's been I don't know how well how long since UNLV was good couple couple of decades. Trump and shook night was playing there. He certainly looked like no he's he would be the latest one to come and go there, and maybe he still will. But they got off the mat they won at San Diego State against you know, your most overrated coach in America. Rocky. That couple San Diego State, obviously, really good team seven and three they go. Go there on the road beating twenty seven twenty four. They're still only three and seven, but at least he's showing some signs of life there. We'll see how they finish it out. All right. Very nice. As always guys send your emails to the Alva pottage, Email dot com. And you know, you've you some of you have Email is telling us you love the long podcast. We'll guess what? This one is going to be probably checking in as our longest ever. So congratulations. You're getting you're gonna get this. "They've they find more and more ways to work sponsors into the broadcast like Joel Klatt does like a some sort of Telestrator. I forget what the sponsor is. But he asked to actually say before the Telestrator, and this is the AT and T smart, blah, blah, blah, you know, like, or we have like a Duluth training trading. Toughest player. I believe. That's what it is yet. So that kind of sponsored Elena. Or companies by the way, we'd like to sponsor the audible, they can Email the audible pod at gmaiLcom are always open to new sponsor, but we get somebody to sponsor the weekly shoutouts to. I'm trying to think who that who who who would make sense for that who has something to do shouting. Microphone company. No, there's like a there's like a like a gag stains out of your clothes shout. Good point. I was soon as we get off the podcast. I'll be looking up to person contact is. I don't I don't think they're going to advertise on a college or. Nigel foam Nigel camel Poland Nigel Campbell Pullman, Washington guys at dinner tonight. We were discussing zoo, I actually think that we are properly rated at eight maybe even slightly overrated. If I'm honest. However, my brother and says that we were USC with the exact same credentials. It'd be number four number five. My argument back into the committee was supposed to disregard brand names that that wouldn't be the case. Do you feel like the committee actually, do a good job disregarding brand names, or do you feel like it? Frequently swings their judgments. I think it does. I think he they're both. Right. You know, when he's talking about if they were USC. Well, let's be honest if they were USC they'd be playing Notre Dame would USC plays a much tougher non conference in Wasi plays USC also played at Texas. Whereas was UIs non-conference is not helping them at all. I mean, it's. But if you remember it Washington two years ago had a very similar terrible non conference schedule and same record. And they were this was not an issue for them. So I think he's right. I think but I also do I think someone what's happened? And this is I don't know if it's fortunate or unfortunate for Washington state. The Pac twelve is was really down last year, obviously one in eight and a bowls. They're even further down. If you look at how the perception of the league is this year. So who are the teams we thought were going to be we thought Washington was going to be really good? Well, they're not really good. They're pretty good. But they're not really good Stanford down Oregon probably a little worse than what we had thought. USC? I didn't think they'd be very good. They're even worse than that. I mean, the the only one who I I think in the conference in Washington state who is like exceeded exceeded expectations is Arizona state just because we all thought Herm would like would like burn three timeout. It's before the before the I I play the game, you know. Turns out he's competent. So well, look looking at it. Now, first of all, by the way, Washington state could potentially win the Pac twelve and b twelve and one and at the end of the season not have a single win over team. The finishes ranked in Washington was twenty fifth last week. So even they're not gonna get it. They're gonna get a ranked one or team in the south. I mean, I like hype maybe you talking go nine in three and then they'd beat them. I don't think that's going to happen on Utah nine and four would still be in the top twenty. That's probably their best hope is Utah's nine and three and they would probably be in the top twenty five. But you know, they can end up playing ASU Arizona who would not be ranked. So if I'm looking at it right now saying they would be number five you look at the teams that are head of them. I don't think they I don't if this were USC with the exact same resume would they be ahead of Georgia. No, would they be have Oklahoma. No. I do think they'd be a head of seven into LSU though. Probably show. Yeah. So minimal bump. There..

"Maybe the coaches in these conference. Could explain it. But you see a lot of those in the sun belt conference USA and the MAC where not that there aren't upsets in the major conferences. But there are a lot more will like that like take a look at Old Dominion season this year, they they haven't you know, what is their record? But they beat Virginia Tech this week. They beat North Texas who's one of the better teams in that conference. And yet they lost a bunch of bad teams. You know, you'll see it just see sometimes these inexplicable weeks where team who's one of the better teams in that conference. Will suddenly lose to one of the worst teams? I don't know what that is. It's weird. Because like I said this game wasn't even close. No coastal blew the game open. They outscored them twenty seven to nothing in the second half. But when you look at it was like a bunch of turnovers, there was one throat over for you, a none for coastal new the only thing I look on his UAB fifteen penalties in that game show that didn't hell so I, you know, I don't know what the heck happened that day. But that. It's an interesting one. But anyway, as we digress into. Question. You know, first of all Boise state had a big win over Fresno state this week this past week. And now they'll play Utah state for the for that division. I think Fresno state probably still come out the other side. So if it's not UCF, then probably next in line would be Cincinnati assuming they run the table. And after that, I would think it'd be the mountain west it's hard for UAB or buffalo to have the strength of schedule. They'll like, I said, you say noun and then wins conference USA. That's that's pretty good thing to have on your resume. Jayme. Here's a you're. You're a TV sports personality. Jamie Boyle from Grand Rapids, Michigan mentions that he went to the Ohio State. Michigan state game this past weekend. It reminded him of all the reasons why he loves college football the ban. The pageantry all of that. But it also reminded him of the thing he despises most about attending. A game the endless wave of TV timeouts true or false in ten years. And we watch a college football game networks, we'll find a way to move to a World Cup style format where only the TV the TV timeouts only happened at the end of quarters are halftime. Well, I've seen some of that like where I think football now has has a similar kind of halftime where it's it's kinda rolls through. And as I don't know. I'm not a TV executive. I don't know how that would how the what happened. I think there could be some of that. But I don't think he would ever they would ever go entire quarters without commercial breaks. It's just the amount of money that the networks spend on this. They got to find a way to make. So we have we have somebody in the truck whose basically one of their main jobs, making sure, you know, that part of the broadcast is is balanced. Right. So you know, I'm sitting down there. And I'm obviously listening to the broadcast in my in my headphones, but I'm also listening to our producer. And so just on, you know, whether we're going to have okay, this is going to be a this is going to be sponsored element. This is going to be a half impediment. This is going to get longer break is just you know, there's such a there's such a tension to it. Because like I said the these. Are these are such huge deals that the networks are paying and the money in the business coming out. I just think that's just the reality of college sports as a as a as a huge business, a huge corporate business, people don't realize this. But you know, as much as live sports has become such a premium because people actually have to watch the commercials, and and and they get big ratings. They often are still money loser for the networks because they just they have they've spent so much on the rights that it's just almost impossible to turn around and make a profit off of it. So if you notice you watch a football game now, and I've noticed FOX has a lot of these..

"But I think we both agree. If you bright there, if the Louisville job hadn't come open, Jeff Brown was probably going to be there for a while. PJ flack is having a rough year but future's bright there. Northwestern's not going anywhere. I mean, I would at this point is is there's just nothing. They're not bad. But there's nothing there to to make you feel like, oh, they're they're going to, you know, next. They didn't get this year. But next year, though, when the victim like, this, frankly, this team had no reason to have four losses. It's got a they've got a decent quarterback. They've got an NFL tight end who Scott documentary point or they have to NFL type. NFL tied in the other guy is really really good. And they did. Fence. And and yet they find ways to lose games like that one the other day. So I don't, you know, the only thing I that I can say is that at least Kirk farance has kind of become more relaxed and easy going, and he goes for he goes for it on fourth down now. But in terms of larger picture, you know, if you're why would you think that this is going to be anything other than eight and four on average kind of team? I think they're good. I I just think that where they are right now. I think they have three young women that they start on line. And all those guys will be back. And the question has been they have not run the ball. Very well, you donate Stanley. I think is is very talented. And you said two tight ends the other day. You know, I think they were shaky at receiver last year they're much better receiver but the run game Akron, wildly moved on. And they really haven't had an answer for that. At this point. They've three running backs. We thought MCI sergeant who started. The northwestern game would've either JC guy who has some buzz inside the program, but they really didn't get it done against your modern northwestern. And and you know, I like I said, I think they're a good team. I it wouldn't shock me. If next year they had a better year and you start hearing. Well, they're like all more cohesive, or you know, who knows what you know. But just they just have been a little out of sync. And I I don't know if there's any one reason to you know, put your finger on that. I agree with what Josh said. I mean, no doubt Wisconsin down to brass coming. But they are not not there yet everything he said was right? And if you look at north western I mean, you look even if they had won that game this past weekend. I still wasn't gonna win the big the big ten west just I don't know. It's a it's an odd year. Then I still think he's a really good coach. But I I can hear a little of the frustration. I get it. 'cause because they're talented. This is a this was the or to get that division. You're always bringing up. My coach rankings where where would we cook variance being your top twenty five probably would be in the back of the top twenty five. I think it'd be my top twenty five like, I'll I I mean, I remember your twenty five he wasn't in there. Yeah. So like I would put him over like you had rocky long. And there you had you had some a few other is in the fringe. And like I wouldn't have that guy in their time out time out time out. So you think it was bad timing, San Diego State just had a terrible loss UNLV. But in general, he's been winning rock. You think it's more impressive for parents to? He went to a Rose Bowl in twenty fifteen other than that. They've been kind of about five hundred in the big ten for about ten years. Now, you think that is a more harder thing to pull off then rocky long winning ten eleven game to your San Diego State. Is a really good coach. But also, send ego state is probably one of the is is is good a job as there is in terms of you're surrounded by recruits compared to what you know, the rest of the mountain west has you also play in a dilapidated stadium. It's very little fan. But again the talents around you in San Diego. That's better than any like, you have the best talent base by far in that in that..

"And then, you know, you Washington state is dealing with the tragedy of Tyler linski, and how mommy's out there in the, you know, Menchu's back in Mississippi. And so he showed you know, he's like Olympic shot at one more time at the playoff at the very least. I will learn raid system, and that could help my coaching for that way. Crazy. I wonder if he had gone to Alabama like, you know, the time it was going to the season. The controversy is whether Jalen hurts was gonna lose his starting job, which Jalen hurts of lost. The number two job would have been able to done enough to over. You know, like, here's the thing. I think what happens with a lot of quarterbacks. And you this is the only example of, you know, especially when you have a dual threat guy. They don't realize how good they are in practice until like people are actually trying to tackle them. And then I can't get this guy down. This guy makes us throw. I don't think they would have known just how good gardener men's shoe is unless he's actually playing in the games. Yeah. I agree. And he's found the perfect place for himself that just it's nice when you see that happen. And when we all watched enough times, you realize some kids just made the choice that wasn't the right choice for him, school wise, and he may pay for it with a couple of years on the bench or or maybe never seeing this is this was nice 'cause garner image. You could have gone through his. Whole college career. And if he hadn't made his last choice. None of us would have really known who he is. Now, we've always held up here. Russell Wilson as the you know, the the rare because it's fan mostly grad transfers don't actually ended up having a big impact Keller. Chris too sitting on the bench at Tassie. You know, we've always held up. Russell Wilson Wisconsin as the gold standard of that. But Gardner makes you ends up leading Washington state to Pac twelve championship. And maybe even a playoff spot of the, you know, that's as big if not bigger it impacted Russell Wilson how to Wisconsin. Correct. And we we're sitting here at Ben saying like well, ever golsen wound up at Florida state league Cy year wound up at Florida does this mean that Brandon wimbush playing quarterback at Miami next year? Because he's not playing out then. Yeah, they they could they probably could. They use of the big three, by the way. See if if again, you've got but one thing that was funny. Maybe you guys find this interesting when I was watching the US game the other night what stood out to me? And this is why college football, especially so much different in basketball or baseball. It's the difference coaching minks like US's got athletes, and as explain someone watching the game like the the difference with football is coaching matters so much because you gotta do your job. You've gotta have disciplined into what your job is. And everybody's gotta be coordinated because an average team of athletes. It's really well coached him beat a great team of athletes. It's poor the coach and watching that USC Cal game on Saturday night. And I'm like, I don't wanna call cow average, but relative they were just a better coach team. And and it's it's interesting in watching Florida state, at least this it's the same thing. It's so much fun as a connoisseur of his game to watch change with less talent teams more. Talent because what gets done between Sunday afternoon and Friday. It's so important while I think that the well, I think I think when you look at some of these teams, you see, you know, I I think sometimes we define talent as okay, this guy was a four star. This guy was a five star necessarily and sometimes it's not that. But you know, look, I would use John. The example, I'm watching stews alma mater this past weekend. And they have seven starters who northwestern was their only power five offer. They're the best player on the field was Isaiah bowser who's a freshman running back who did nothing until a month ago. And then raise the top five rush defense ram for like one fifty and basically put the team on his back, and you know, the the recruiting hurting someone, but he didn't even have an offer from Cincinnati is Ohio kid now. But I think this speaks to really good coaches, especially at the college level. I don't wanna say..

"Speaking of watching I think it's more a function of you know, what he came from this high school mater dei were Matt liner Matt Barkley in a former Notre Dame Heisman winner had went to. He had all these Colt. Brennan went there. She had this legacy program. He put up ridiculous numbers. And he's following Sam darnold, and I think there is an I'm guilty this too. I think there is a rush from us in the media to always be out in front of the who's the next one and be I write plantar flag on saying. I wrote about this guy. I I signed them up. I, you know, I anoint him or whatever. And I think I think we got over. I mean, he still probably will have a really good career at USC. I don't know. But I think there was no much of a let's plant the flag. And look we at the F did a store, I know Matt hazed at a store at forgot. I mean, I felt like pretty much everybody nationally did their J T Daniel. Story for even enrolled. It it in south bend, we referred to as Jimmy Clausen syndrome. I think I mean, there's a lot going on there. I mean, he just one thing on that on the Jimmy Clausen thing in book may have Ian book who I think the only other power five offer he had was Leach at Washington state. He made him having entered career, you know, than than some of these guys who go in four or five star guys this out bend. Hey, you know, he's got two more years there, and in, you know, outside of your partner could probably have the best career of anybody there in twenty five years. I the he's a good quarterback. I'm just I'm you know, I'm not he's not to attack. A don't get me wrong. He's a good quarterback. If he were six foot three he'd be an amazing quarterback. I think that your freshman. I mean, first of all with USC. I think the reason we were all. Rushing to write about him is that we really did feel like he he the whole season was going to depend on whether he was ready, and you see now that that was absolutely true. But I think there's been a change in the last two years of expectations. When Jake Frahm takes his team to the national title game. When to a does what he did in the second half of the national championship game troop Josh Rosen was pretty good as a true freshman like there's no longer this. When it comes to those really highly. Hi guys, and look what Trevor Lawrence is doing. I think people are just now like well. Okay. True. Freshman big deal. Like just because it doesn't mean you can't do it. When you know, those guys Trevor Lawrence's are the are the rarity look at Georgia fans keep wanting Justin fields to play more and more. And when he does you're like, I don't think he's ready. Nothing wrong. Nothing wrong with that. No. By the way, you guys are more study studious on this and probably you even more Stewart Bruce has to work fly every week. But do I have this, right? Like when Matt Jones within the game for Alabama the other day in another world with Gardner Minhsiu have been to guy they'd have gone to decided to go down the Bama. Yes. He I mean because that was the store add reported on a lot in the off season. He was he was going, and, you know, basically, how mummy who was at was briefly Jackson state was not far from there. You obviously knows the IRA better than anybody. Save for maybe Mike Leach and would help give them a crash course was like his thing was let me make one more run at this. Because the thinking was when he first went through the recruiting process with Alabama was because I mean, what's interesting is so Tennessee he was waiting to see what happened with Keller Chris in. So it's Kella Christians, you know, going there from as a grad transfer from Stanford. So it's like, okay. It's going to be Alabama. And the thinking is maybe one of these guys will transfer the emergency guy. But if not I get head head start on my coaching career and defacto G A..

And you've just got the sense watching him that if I were a coach I'd be very comfortable with this guy because he makes really good decisions. I actually think he got he got pushed back three spaces further than he should have been because of one pick six at Miami later in the season where you know, they put him in because when Bush was struggling he throws to pick sticks. And if you've noticed instant, they don't they don't make him make throws like that. He's six feet tall. It's tough for him to make throws short plan and passes over the middle. For the because he gets blinded. But when they put him in a position to succeed that guy just makes really good decisions. He I think people forget that the two thousand twelve team was legitimately really good on defense. Yes. Alabama took it to them at night. But in general, of course of the season that was a really good defense. But their offense was basically just try cross your fingers and hope every golsen doesn't turn it over. And this. This is a real offense. Yeah. Tommy reach was a relief pitcher and a few games that year. What's interesting about this team is how comfortable it's been for Notre Dame fans. I mean, they have lead in nothing, but lead in eight of their ten games, they trailed briefly three nothing at Wake Forest, and then took the lead in the very next session. The only scary game team has had has been pit. And as we've seen pits turned out to be better than you thought. This has been a team that's really been in control of most games. Not in the way that Alabama. Clemson it. No, no doubt. But they've been up by ten at least for the majority of most of the games they've been playing which for longtime Notre Dame viewers post hold rarity to have such a cataclysm free season. While you rarely get that word in our podcast do cataclysm while John is nothing if not a worst close to catechism, and I'm Catholic. So you know, you had to happen. Yeah. So let's ask you this. So. I watch I try to watch college game day as much as I can depending our our own crew game scheduled, but I saw a lot of it. And I saw they were poking you quite a bit indirectly in some of the discussion. And you're I know you like Desmond. I liked asthma. A lot too frustrating for Notre Dame fans to sit back and watch this and how people kind of saying all right? I know you beat Michigan. But that was a long time ago. State whips Michigan. Then that's gonna. Yeah. They have a loss. Okay. It was to produce. And it was a, blah, blah. Okay. You know, they have a conference title game. Yeah. So what it's going to be against northwestern team that that Notre Dame beat up on. And then what a non conference game. Are Notre Dame fans? Going feeling pretty good about we went out and everything or are. They just like getting frustrated with people what I think is happening is correct me if I'm wrong because I did your column about it today. I feel like there's a little bit of manufacture factor drama from with us within the national fake. There's nothing to talk about with a with a play. Why were they debating Michigan Notre Dame? They would both be in if the season ended today. And if it did somehow come down to some argument between the two of them Michigan. What have no case what this is the stupidest? I think they're making the debate beside I agree with you that part of the manufactured. Nobody wants to play Alabama. If you're four you're playing Alabama. So I think right now that is part of it. When I can't understand is why they're debating Michigan today when the real debated Michigan Georgia, that's the debate. Georgia's had a very good season. And I I would be curious to see what Vegas would do Georgia versus Michigan in in a in a neutral site. I'm I'm not saying that Georgia's better than Michigan. I'm saying that's where the debate should actually be. Well, you think of Georgia wins out that Michigan would go ahead of them. If they're if they're to me of Georgia beats Alabama that's going to be the best one of the season..

"I just I have this fear that Eric done. She's going to get hurt. And you know, back up commie devito is going to win the game for Syracuse. And I'm gonna hear all these Joe peci references for the next two weeks. And that could be that could be miserable. And and I know like you're listening jerk and eight a more now, but I'm also because of birth a Yankee fan, and I'm thinking like my two favorite teams are going to see they're they're seizing end inside Yankee Stadium. Same in the same. You know, six week period. I also a fear here. But it's going to be an entertaining game. You guys have seen Syracuse. Very good team. Yeah. Yeah. I think that, you know, at the time when they gave such a scared of clumps in you know, that was what's wrong with clumps in moment. Even though they were down to their quarterback. And now it's like, oh that was actually a really good win for Clemson. They're one of the only team. Yeah. They kept Notre Dame kept Syracuse from scoring forty points. But so math Fortuna Ryan me of this last week, you know, usually with these neutral site games. They're announced years ahead of time. I forgot that. This was a Notre Dame home game that got moved to Yankee Stadium. Just last December like not that long ago given. The confidence aches now. How much do you think Jackson Brooke and Brian Kelly are kicking themselves that they're not playing this one in south bend? But you know, I mean, honestly, November in south bend the last fifteen years, even before that's not that's not a gimme Notre Dame is lost to Syracuse of ember. I was at that game in south bend. They've lost Louisville. They've locked Virginia Tech. They've off to northwestern. Lost the navy? Notre Dame knows how to lose at home in south bend in November. So from that standpoint, I don't think that makes much of a difference where you're actually to know in the new Yankee Stadium if I recall correctly, so I I really, you know, I don't think they're kicking. So that much, and I know people have made a big deal about this. Notre Dame's traveling, you know, the last month or so, but I think even that story is a little bit overblown if he follow it. They had two weeks before the navy game. Plus one week where they weren't even attending school. Data fall rake. The the Rogaine northwestern as you guys know about a two and a half hour bus ride, then their home and really the only traveling this week to Syracuse. And then they're going to go play a team. That's almost as poorly coaches, Florida state thanksgiving weekend in at USC USC. I think Notre Dame such a weird year. Like Syracuse is a scary team the final three who figure that out. Right. So let me ask you this this team looks like it should be a playoff team right now. And now, there's no hurry. He STAN they lost that great side of the offense a lime, but they seem to have reloaded really well, Ian book looks like he is throwing the ball allot better than ever golsen wants did. So I'm going to ask you, do you think this team now would have to win two games? Not one is is better suited to to win. A when title than the two thousand twelve team was it to win title yet. But in a world with Alabama. I don't think anybody's well-suited to win a title. But. They're a better team than a two thousand twelve team without a doubt. And it starts really comedic with the book. Because even when I go back to watching him start against North Carolina twenty seventeen and I don't know if you guys had a chance to see that game. I doubt it..

"It is weird though. Because like you said they lost the Akron their own three and their non conference. It is you know, like, it is a very odd team in that regard. You know, we other game against Wisconsin couple of weeks ago. And there was no Alex Warner Brooke. It was Jack Cohen making his first action of the season. They really struggled. It was some some self inflicted stuff. That was kansin. Did. I remember coming away from go on. I know if these guys are very good. But they did win the game at home. I was more impressed by what I saw this past weekend. I was certainly a couple of weeks ago. But you know, all the matters. Is you win the games, and they're winning the games that matter. And so who knows I mean, it's not gonna help Michigan world state probably their profile much to beat you know, because if they beat northwestern northwestern at best would be eight and five team. So I don't think there would be. On the top twenty five at that point. But you know, I think they will if they win these next to Minnesota Illinois and they're eight and four going into that game. They probably will be in the top twenty five just because. No, I'm saying if they lose it, then I think that follow me. I don't know the committee has just has gone both ways on that. Sometimes they don't penalize the team for actually playing the extra game. But regardless I mean, north western made the top twenty five this week at AP top five at six and four. It's a really weird year where you've got these teams that have been at the top all year. There are only two teams in the whole to power five teams in the whole country right now to have exactly two losses being LSU Syracuse, and then the rest of the top twenty five is all three loss teams. And it's really unusual. I looked it up. Usually there's between seven and ten two loss teams at this point in the season. They were only down to two. So it would not surprise me an eight and five team was in the top twenty five regardless. You know think we both agree that if Michigan Ohio state win the rest of their games, they're going to the playoff. Why are you say we get to our guest to it? All right. We're pleased to be joined now by one of our absolute favorite, recurring podcast guests. He's come on many times. John Walters, author of the world famous bubble screen Saturday college football TV recap column on the athletic and also avid Notre Dame fan who I'm sure John. When the season began you had it circled on your calendar. The game of the year would be Notre Dame. Syracuse at least five stops away into d train for my apartment. I you know, it's it's the road trip that everybody can make Notre Dame. Syracuse Yankee Stadium. Got to be talking about this game. Now that he knows who that coaches. You know by now, he probably knows who Dino babies is. So perhaps so dog, I it's funny. I as as you guys know, we do these state of the program pieces for the athlete where it's basically giant previews every team and my favorite one to do that spring. We Syracuse because I'd never met in a baby's before. And I just just loved the guy and mature much time eat if you choose spent with them, but just a great person to talk to and friendly. And I'm I'm I'm rooting for both teams on Jeter day, I'm serious does that work. I mean, you're you're will Notre Dame's how how can this work out for both parties you obviously want to Dame to win and make the playoff? It can't obvious. Not I you know, I'm a Notre Dame alum. Do you want Notre Dame to win in a high scoring game and Dino to get screwed by bad officiating? So the excuse of why..

"And you know, that was a I think on our site Friday, Scott, Dr Mun did a really good story about what has become the what was a lopsided Iowa northwestern series. And all of a sudden now northwestern has as kind of molded itself similarly, just built on toughness and character, and and just grit as he said it as fits at it and the ended up winning the game. So really cool seem to be in the middle of I told Scott after I read that story is like fighting, no better. I would think you were covering northwestern nineteen ninety-five because he had every detail about the Genesis of that why that game became such a big deal for Gary Burnett in that program the infamous moment after they I will crush them his first year and Hayden fry as they're shaking handset. I hope we didn't hurt any of your boys became the Genesis of a series where like. Frankly, north west I seems like north western is constantly like the thorn in Iowa side. I remember, you know, nine I was undefeated thinking national championship. They beat them in Iowa City. There's just been a lot of games like that. Obviously, this one didn't really impact Isla other than it's now officially a really disappointing season there in terms of the north western side of it. You know, I got I got really good game. I I assumed I'd be watching Wesley bedlam during that window. But as I think once I realized that Minnesota was gonna clobber Purdue. And that this really was for the for the division. I watched it pretty pretty closely. Like you said they had to overcome a lot to win that game. But I just want to put this in perspective for people. I got a lot of I wasn't even like tweeting as a northwestern panda. So just like the facts of it the fact that they clinched the division and you immediately get back all the snarky while they're just going to lose fifty in the championship game. Which first of all it is Michigan. The score was twenty two seventeen the first time. They played maybe it'll be by fifty. But I'm not sure where that's coming from. But, you know, you're missing the point like if this were Alabama, Ohio State, whoever, you know, one of those programs winning division out of big deal for north western to actually go play in the big ten championship game in Indianapolis is one of the biggest accomplishments in the history that program, you know, it's not like they've won the big ten three times in the last fifty or sixty years. The most recent being two thousand. They've gone to a lot of bowl games, recently, obviously. And even those whenever when they won the gator bowl a few years ago that was a really big deal beating pit in. The pinstripe bowl was a big deal. Winning this division is a big deal for them. So let them have their moment. You know, maybe they honestly probably will not beat Michigan Ohio state in the big ten championship. But I can tell you this much. I'm on a group text thread with a bunch of my friends from college, you know, year round, and they're all going. They're all going Indianapolis. It's that big a deal. So qudos aphids Joe. It's been quite a few years for for you a couple years ago. Northwestern basketball funding the tournament. Two years ago. I was two years ago. Now, this it's been you know, and they opened that great facility. So yeah, I mean, it's a it's a really good time for them in athletics. And. Who would have guessed after they lost at home to Akron and Duke as well at home. All of duke's pretty good team that they would not only win the big ten west. And remember go back to August. The consensus was Wisconsin was going to run away with the big ten west. You know, they were you pick them. We we both picked them to go to the playoffs. And if it wasn't going to be Wisconsin. And it's probably gonna be Iowa. They beat all those things it'd be Purdue beat Nebraska they've actually one what twelve of their last thirteen big ten games or thirteen fourteen something like that..

"Welcome to the audible, I'm Stewart Mandel joined as always by Bruce Feldman, and as we were preparing to to do this episode, Bruce, we were realizing like not a lot happened in college football this past weekend of note. We're going to have our great friend John Walters on here in a little bit talk Notre Dame Syracuse, and college football television, and all that. But some people might say on bias to say this. But I think the biggest story in college football Saturday happened at your game. Would you mean your album honor winning its division and not only beating I will on the road? But also having Wisconsin and Purdue go down. Yeah. I was it was crazy. I mean, they I bought crazy that six four team has clinched its division with two weeks to spare but going into that going into the game. And by the way, I was ten point favorite. They needed to win two games. The you need to win two games to their last three games. Or like, you said they needed Wisconsin and Purdue to both lose, and they both did Purdue in pretty humiliating fashion. So tell us about the game and tell us about being right in the middle of it for one of the more memorable images that went out there, Saturday of half its Gerald gathering his team. Well, we expected it to be frigid. And it was the wind show was I think five degrees on Friday night. It was in the teens on Saturday. And by the way, your AD Jim Phillips is brave man. No gloves. No, jack. Just a shirt and tie. There was like are you crazy? He was like well the players have their uniform. This is my uniform somewhere Coqui easier said than done, you know, was that we knew it was going to be a low scoring game. I did not. I think it was on a ten or eleven point spread that. I was the favourite and credits north western. I mean, they they lost. They're already down a couple of defensive backs and they lose their best defensive back mantra, heart edge, and I were attacked right after that. And then they were down to the third string kicker and they still won. And it was a cool moment at the end of the game. I think people have seen the video. So I'm, you know, rushing in there to get to get Pat fits right after and before that's happening. Our camera geyser, then you know, they're he's rounding everybody up because he's going to break the news. So I'm in the little bit of the scrum. I don't intend to be in the middle realize at that point that he that the team doesn't know yet. I kind of had a good idea that just because you know, their play. The game or not on Twitter. It's you know, it's it's not their phones on the sidelines. It's not a home game. It's just I think that I I don't think they know that they know clearly no they won the game. I don't think they know that that they have that Wisconsin and produce loss because at that game wasn't like it was you know, has a bunch of stuff on the scoreboard. But they don't really have a lot of you know, wasn't like you're here on the crowd went over every game game update that's going on. So I don't think his players new and his ass. ID Paul Kennedy had informed him like right after the game. And so he circles everybody up, and as they're kind of all gathering. I'm like all kinds of where this is going. So like, I said, it was it was a cool seen to to be in the middle of and to see, you know, I think that's one of the things we love about college football. And college sports is just the the genuine emotion of it all especially, you know, look this. You are when you were a student that was their glory time. It's a people know the history. Off a full for a long time. And now, they're pretty pretty good. And he's done a great job coaching them..
