"What what's the best part of your game that you're taking in to the tournament this this time around. What's the what are you going to show the world. The field that they have not seen from the hofer in years past the thing that i've learned as i've gotten older fifty three years old so my windows getting a little smaller for this. Yeah but my putting has been The reason why one the first to hear cutting right now is probably the highest confidence. It's ban which. I don't know if that's good or bad news because each time i went into these tournaments. I didn't think i could make anything. But i'm really trying to improve on where my body is because my body just gets beat up. I'm not gonna lie. And i'm just putting him off until like i just can't do it anymore and so what i'm going actually in two days i'm going back to bridgestone to get the Irons recalibrated that's the one weakness right now. That used to be a pretty good strength. I gotta get my iron play back so the approach the you're fine off the boxer comfort. You're comfortable off the box. It's it's into the green. That's where you need to tighten things up. Need a few things up. I'm not gonna lie during these last eight months. I've never played golf in my life in probably caused me to go a little backwards. Because i'm paying too much but i'm had time on my life with the opportunity to play golf and good weather so you know this is. This is a calendar moment. Every year i put down the dates across my fingers that everything is going to allow me to get to that to that place to have a chance to defend I will probably just my second grandson will be born right before that. And i told my daughter that you know there was a lot of pressure because my grandson was two and a half years old only knows champ right so i think the third year i would be doing a disservice to my second grandson. I didn't live up to that. Let's keep role it's multi. let's keep it rolling. Got to keep it going. I've got some questions for him freshly manicured slab of ice beautiful teebox. You're the first one off or a wonderfully manicured bump without a clete. Mark anywhere on the infield. What would you rank those. What's your favorite rank. Those wonder well. The first t right now is intriguing to me. Because i can't throw a leading man. I they asked me to throw out the first pitch. I'm begging i. That distance looks like it's one hundred and twenty feet but if my shoulder was good it'd be no doubt that that undermine my grandson to be honest is going to be about six ten and so you know i told my son. Law industry sports mcclay. It's either a six ten point guard six ten on the mound randy johnson or sixteen dustin. Johnson we're going to have a job one way or another magic johnson or randy johnson. I love i'm hopeful. I can give some wisdom to him when he's ready to throw a baseball and then the last question that we asked to all of our guests is that if you could go back in time to any moment in baseball history and just like a standard time machine. Go up time as she. What moment would it be your live. You're there you're not playing you're in the stands. You're watching this moment in baseball history moment. Is that free. I could say easily. It'd be jackie robinson. Moment which one just the fact that when he crossed over and broke the color barrier. Because you know you hear stories and you hear what we don't even think of as reality to see it firsthand and to see that moment would be probably transforming. It was and what it's done for sports. And i think that would be just to to to be around him see his personality pick his brain. I scanned him in. Imagine what that would be like. We have all learned to be pretty comfortable and we've all lived in a timeframe that didn't exist like that so that's the first that comes to my mind because i'm always intrigued with how somebody else had to deal with something. I've never had john smoltz hall of famer the champ champ best of luck in the three peat appreciated guys. Thanks for having me. Mr smoltz was incredible. It was an honor of mine to To have this time to speak with you from from one picture to another. I appreciate everything that you had done for our game. Everything you've done in the game. So so i just wanted to say that i think you and also i will be calling you For a partnership when we enter in the.

"If like in my position after the. Mookie betts thing happens. It's like well you're turning off fans because now like the twenty. The two twenty twenty. Boston red sox baseball team was an abomination. But you know that eventually they will spend money. They'll be good again in the fans will come back in cleveland though. I mean when you're you're telling them were not going to invest in this team and then you prove it like at least like the red sox are like yeah. We can't do it right now but when we can we'll we'll we'll figure it out. The indians are just like yeah. We're we're we're never going to do that ever at least under this ownership like that's soul bad for baseball like i. I know that like rob manfred works for the owners. But i wish that they were someone with authority in baseball. That could pull someone like dolan aside and be like listen dude. If you're not planning on investing in the baseball team that you own maybe it's time to step aside and let someone else come in. We'll actually give a shit so but that's win and this is what i've tried to get folks to understand though is that's when dolan says. Hey hey robby which you sit down right here. Pal commerical rob. Let me show you this. See this. this is our books and this is how much money we make running our organization the way we do see that right there. That's called the bottom line. It's black. I make money doing what i'm doing and i don't care that your nephew or that your doesn't have a jersey of their favorite player. I don't care that doesn't affect me at all. What affects me is getting rid of the karasu contract. That was going to pay him. Twelve million dollars over the next two years a piece. I don't have to pay that now. You want to know what. I just did just saved. I'd actually just made money for my billion dollar organization for my billion dollar business mentor. So what were you saying about. What was that about the fans. I don't care. And i've told you i don't care. I told the fans. I don't care and you wanna know who i'm securing the fans who know that i don't care because they're not holding any standard there. Okay with how. I've done things sure. There's a vocal minority who were pissed off about the way things have gone but remember rob. This is my business venture not yours. And i was voted on by the other owners to let me do what i'm doing. This is the business of baseball. And i'm sorry that you want your favorite team to be really good. I want my business to make money. And that's what it's doing. So i'm sorry those two don't align and don't meet up for you at the junction you want them to. But that's reality and baseball fans don't want to hear that shit though baseball fans just do not want to hear that we want to have a guy like steve cohen. Come in and say. I don't care what it costs. I really liked the idea of winning the world series. I don't care what it costs. I really liked the idea of my fans being excited about the product. They're spending money on so it's just understanding that that's how the business is always going to go and there's always gonna be those owners who are in place that are okay with making the money. They're making they're worried about you. Making childhood memories. They just don't give a shit then that's just not good for the sport at the end of the day. It's not good for the sport. I feel bad for indians. Fans and i've i've seen some and like you know the the dramatic fan base. That are like i'm done like the frank tanks of the world that like i'm done fucked the mets. I'm never watch them again. You know that they're going to be right back the next night. Not even the next season the next night watching their baseball team. I believe some of the indians fans that are like. I can't do this anymore. i would. I would say that. I do understand that because i am a part of an organization that has fans that are very passionate that feel the same way about not having the stars to root for for a long period of time and i do. I know fans that that say i check scores on twitter but i refuse to even put that channel on. 'cause that channel earns them money. I don't want them getting my money. And i can i have so. I have no argument for that. There is no argument for that. If you're if you're a baseball fan you understand that so. I'm not here to try to talk those people off the ledge i. I'm here to let you know i fully understand. I sympathize. But i sympathize. I empathize i. I all of the sizes. I is is with you. I'm with you. Yeah sorry indians fans. I wish you the best of luck in the future. It's not fun. It's not fun ben. There it's not fun. Dj lemay hugh is going back to the new york yankees on a six year. Ninety million dollar deal. I said this two months ago. It's not even a hot take as i. I don't think that there's a fucking chance in hell. The dj lemay who signs with any other team. I knew that the mets there was a need. They have the money. The dodgers were in there a little bit but at the end of the day when you have a team like the new york yankees who have the ability to spend that they do and the desire on behalf of the player to return. Dj had. It's just a matter of time. I mean obviously they were gonna they were gonna. It was gonna take a little time to figure out what the dollar amount was the years were and to. Dj's credit he placed an emphasis on the years more so than the dollars he wanted. The longevity wanted the length and he got it he didn't get the average annual value. That i think a lot of people thought he might get and it's got more years than i think. A lot of we get so let's start right. There is that and in my opinion it was the initial reason. The initial cause for the balking. Yeah because i mean if you if you look and i mean..

"Tears. i'm wiping. That's champagne wiping out of my eyes because the guy you don't like is really good and can really help our ballclub and has done. So that's the business. The ugly ugly business side of all of this jeered is if there's thirty teams in the game. And there's a closer who has a domestic violence history One hundred two in the gas tank. All thirty of those teams are listening. And it's just a matter of where their individual line is in regards to what there okay with what they will deal with and what they just won't stand for and those lines look very different across thirty teams. Yeah so. I guess that puts a bow on the porter situation now. Mets need new general manager again. Perhaps they promote from within and If there's a silver lining here. I mean they just they literally just conducted a search so there are individuals that At least they had conversations with recently where they can look back around and be like. Hey you still want that. Mets job because we we actually have an opening right now. I i got some questions from for mets fans asking. Will this this incident. Deter guys like george springer or trevor bauer from from signing with the mets. And i can tell you. That porter wasn't to my knowledge was not negotiating with free agents. He was more unlike the lender trade side of things. Yeah i think. And andy was handling the free agent stuff and even if it was those guys especially thinking about springer what situation. He's coming from. He would probably love to know that any sort of nefarious activity. That could be going on behind. Closed doors is going to be handled. Swiftly into the point where i'm not gonna have to be answering any fucking questions like this because i'm going to. I'm going to be answering questions about stuff. That went on behind closed doors on teams that i was a part of for my entire life is probably what springs thinking. And if you can handle this stuff and get it all take. Yeah that's that can only be a positive for guys. Looking at the mets on the outside the forgot to mention john smoltz on the show today hall of famers. Both say we were not in that for a little bit that we had a hall of famer on deck. The answer to that is. It's john smoltz of red sox. Fame saint louis cardinal legend john smoltz. It was a pleasure. There was an honor to get the chance to talk to him. He was great So the view is coming a little bit later. I i loved. I just loved his response to the question. I asked him about jack morris. And obviously you're you're going to hear that response but when you when you look at a guy likes multi who's done what he's done in the game. Under the circumstances he has a couple of injuries. Closer starter baller. Both and he is competing in that moment in time games. Big stage against an absolute goat in morris and that kind of performance. I i really wanted to hear what he had to say about it. I was very excited. I got the chance. I'm very excited. That have a brand new sponsor. Papa brand lipper brand spanking you. It's right up my alley. It is and honestly it's it's brought me back your It is brought me back because there was. There was a time where i felt like my entire face was going to fall off or just looking at a cam. My my lip would like start. To start to quiver. Like pavlov's dog. Just start to salivate. Put all my face right now but there were side effects. You know. I'm not a big white bump guy on my lips. I don't want to have to worry about getting half my face. Cut off later in life. Some shit that i'm not okay with the give and take have you gotten a can yet actually have a whole box of cans and initial thoughts tremendous product as someone that is looking for the tobacco. Turn it of to the ritual that us dippers out there have sought for many years. I started dipping. When i was eighteen. Seventeen i was. That was my senior of high school. I started so. What's you kind of get into this world of alternatives. It's like well realistically thinking why would continue to do the real stuff when their products out there. "Now by John smoltz who's sitting next to our boy buck John Buck just made him the Toronto Blue Jays Catena Joe Buck. HOW TIRED IS HE JOHN? Joe Buck is doing seven games in seven days. Dieter you tired is John Bach. It's amazing. I've watched this over the last couple years to see anybody do something like this I'm amazed look he makes it seem yeezy I think about what my role would be if I had to go, you know I know a lot about basketball but let's get you know. this different different sport if he had to cross over and do baseball game the next day do basketball game. She's pretty amazing to watch him do football and baseball. So yeah. No no signs at all. What are the weirdest things about calling these Games during a pandemic? The biggest thing is, of course, can't get around the players in the managers to talk to this that the information that you get. You know. Now we're doing conference calls and all that. So you got used to the environment but I don't think as a broadcaster Andrew Are Clare we ever get used to not having fans be a big part of that. How old do you feel when you watch the Blue Jays? Watched Bluejays, just their whole. Their whole. Their whole. Infield is guys you played against son's like you played against these guys their entire. There's so many guys in the big leagues. Right now, John that you played against their father just in general like Dante. BICHETTE head being in the big leagues. Now it blows me away. You know the when it first hit it was when I got to spring training and is was visiting the San Diego padres and I saw that name Quantrill I pitched against his dad in high school. and. We were seniors in high school and I went this is blown me away. So I definitely feel old and I definitely feel like the generation that I played is now starting to catch up to me even doing the game with Charlie Morton that we'll be able to do tonight is that he was a teammate of mine when he was a baby and he's lasted long enough to be able to play in the world series pitched these incredible games. So yeah, I'm I'm at that point I don't know where the next point it goes I wanna be like Jim Kaat. In this game forever and play golf both right handed and left handed and look like him at his age. So maybe that's my next goal. You do you know how much baseball has changed since you were playing it a what do you like and what don't you? Like about you know shifts all home runs and strike outs not a lot of contact like what are the things that you like? About the evolution of the game and don't well, you know I would have liked to know everything about like let's say I was facing you know everything there is to know about your tendencies what you do what you like what you don't like and so that information would be helpful but the one thing I probably would love to see go away and I just because the athleticism of our players are so great. I'll say it like this week to see mookie. In the outfield you know why? Because he's not, he doesn't have three other guys around him closely in a shift, we get to see his athleticism rob and a home run. and. The five tool player, I would love to see the shift go away. So we can see the athleticism again of a second baseman and shortstop cover more territory the arm showed off and at honestly because the shift would go away we see more action and hits that that guy's just when they hit it on the ground aren't going to have, and that's that would be the only thing that I would like to see. The athleticism come back you know Magin Ozzie Smith, and you got Ozzie Smith is a shortstop. So now you have decided advantage over the next team, well, because the game is smarter and there's more information they realized. Well, I don't have Ozzie Smith. So the next best thing I'll put a couple of guys over there that could take the territory that Ozzie Smith does and collectively. Will be okay. So from that standpoint, the athleticism of the game, it's never been greater, but I'd like to see more of the individual athleticism and play John of all the rule changes that they've implemented in this odd season are are any of them? Do you think that they can use moving forward? Oh. Yeah. I think you'RE GONNA see a couple of them stay for. Sure. A and and and I always have thought outside the box with the extra inning rules. I know people right away kind of just got crazy with that stupid is saving a lot of arms and saving a lot of time and it's actually created more action i. don't care what the percentage says that percents games that goes seventeen innings or XYZ as a former player. This is. What I know the indirect consequences happened that no one really pays attention to game goes seventeen innings, some young kid pitches, but off for four and a half innings, and then what happens the next day gets sent down. So I think the extra innings rule is gonNA, stay I, think some form of of the three batter might You know there's the starting process to see how? Can prevent a you know one hundred pitching changes just because and I think you're in a in a way that maybe down the road, you could institute planned doubleheaders for next year..

"Well, I wish I would have learned someone told me a two thousand nine when I was with the Red Sox but. Usually you have. A little bit of time tell that story and I I stumbled upon it. I didn't mean to bring it up, but you're on the mound pitching for the Red Sox, and I'm not very good at this point trying to come back. and. Then it's a relief to find out when I got to Saint Louis my first ball bullpen session Chris Carpenter said you mind if I tell you some I said absolutely he goes I know every piss you throwing I said Oh. Well, if you know every throwing in the bullpen, then everyone knows every pitch I've been throwing a real game he was with my glove and I changed That in the bullpen and that very first game for the St Louis Cardinals I, think I still hold the franchise record. I struck seven guys seven days in a row out for the PADRES. It was such a relief because I was grind so hard for Boston wanted to do so well, and it felt like now looking back knew what was coming they were hitting balls out of the stadium. So when you're you're broke down, trying to perform you think and we'll certainly somebody could have paid that up but it didn't happen. Then thankfully a Chris Carpenter sought do we look at the Astros differently after this postseason? I. Think you have to? I. Mean. I understand what if I was a player? I would encourage everybody just discount to be as quiet as you need to let your playing. You're you're talking I think what they were able to do the gained some respect. I don't think they gained a lot of respect from fans that still don't WanNa. Hear you'll give it a year next year. I think everything will be back to normal. They played an incredible series and yes, they had a lot of people open things didn't work out for the obvious for what they went through and what they were part of collectively I think they gained a lot of respect. Thank you John. Great job and we'll look forward to talking to you and listening world series starts Tuesday night with Joe Buck on Fox thank you buddy. Got It. Thanks. That's John smoltz. About that poll question mclovin when half horse today, we say good morning to our radio affiliates number three, hundred, seventy five, and also our partner. Peacock. Would you rather rob run to win a game or hit a home run to win a game where sixty four percent hit a home run? Yeah. I Guess I would rather rob somebody of a home run because it doesn't happen very often. You know we've seen a lot of home runs walk off home runs. I was there with Joe Carter when I was in Skydome in Toronto when they they beat the Phillies Joe hit that home run and that was a magical moment to witness that and. You, know, but to be able to rob somebody of a home run that's just like Malcolm. Butler when he rob Seattle of a super bowl win. Mike Jones to a lesser degree when he had the tackle on dyson with the titans and the rams. In the Super Bowl I, mean Malcolm Butler won the Super Bowl. He wanted. Individually he wanted. That decision to somehow. Get in between the you know. The wide receiver and the football and make that catch in that that gave new. England. Superbowl won a super bowl. So if you said I could be sent tonio homes and catch a touchdown pass in the corner of the end zone from Ben. Rothlisberger. As the steelers beat Arizona the Super Bowl or it could be Malcolm, Butler will remember Malcolm Butler play long long after we remember Tonio. We. Will. There was some chatter about Jj Watt in the role that he may have played in getting his coach fired Bill O'Brien and I guess there was an altercation. As far as a heated exchange between bill. O'Brien and JJ watt this was during a recent practice and the incident also included defensive coordinator who took place in the week leading up to the winless Texans Week three loss to the steelers. And sources confirmed ESPN a verbal blow up at practice. and. That, the incident was when O'Brien quote lost the team. Titans are Texans down own four and O'Brien was fired as head coach and Jj Watt of course. "Going to have a forfeit in the NFL this weekend? Welcome in got some breaking news that we're following. Matt Miller NFL draft skeleton inside for bleacher report tweeted out last hour lot of chatter. The NFL could make the titans four fit their game against the buffalo bills as a punishment for violating Kovic protocols. The titans players held a workout at a Nashville school with the team facility closed. The head coach Mike Rebels said yesterday that players were told not to hold any group workouts. We ask our players in light of recent tests to not gather whether that's league protocol or US asking them. So we can't just avoid close close contact and we can try to work through this and get back into the building to prepare for Buffalo's quickly as possible. Week four game against the steelers rescheduled October twenty fifth because of the positive tests they're the titans are scheduled to host the buffalo bills this Sunday that is in doubt right now, that's in serious jeopardy but the big news is, could the NFL make the titans forfeit this game as punishment for violating co vid protocols. Now. Mike Gabel didn't sound as demonstrative as hey. They told them absolutely positively no workout. You can't do you like you can't be vague on anything. The NFL can't be vague on any of this and that's what I would want to know. What were you told what the NFL say to the titans because they can't go to the facility were they told you cannot have any workouts here Did Mike Vrabel. Say to his players you cannot gather. But these players don't know if the game is going to be played this weekend. They got together a you know we can't go to the facility. We're not supposed to work out, but we We don't go into a game unprepared. And you got a game against an undefeated buffalo bills team. So that's what's going on right now as we speak, there's a chance the titans will have to forfeit this game coming up this weekend as punishment for violating the safety protocols. Welcome to the.

"He goes out. Don't even register and outcome back from Tommy John Surgery. Yeah that one was dowse more to do with with having. It's heading up pissed a long time right I. Think Having Gone through Tommy John Surgery and coming back in eleven months I was quite where I needed to be. After four gains, I think he's GonNa. Be Fine is had a lot of time rest, but there's a lot of Russ and here's the one thing he could do that. No other pitcher can do. You can make up for that lackluster performance with a couple home runs next time he gets to the place. He can take it out on the baseball. This is a special Ed and you know. I just think that the only problem. He's GonNa wait six more days to get back on mound. He just didn't let the ball go in its natural. You tell yourself let it go. The ball came up cutting. These are all byproducts to coming back from Tommy John that after you get rep, she'll be. Any surprises so FAR ANYTHING STAND OUT! Yeah. The biggest thing I really can't wait to watch is the limited games. Give these teams that may not be able to sustain the pitching over one sixty two I think the easy pick that everybody was talking about could be surprised San Diego padres they have a tremendous open. It got young pitching. That may or may not have been able to sustain itself over one sixty two. I just think this bodes well for what I've always tried to tell you I'm a I'm an advocate for the slit seasons that gives everybody a little bit a little race to have a competitive chance and and I hope we. We can go without anymore because you're gonNA talk about this year at the end of of baseball, and you'll remember this year for a lot of things, and hopefully it's because it's the most exciting sixty games you've ever seen. "Sixty Games that young pitching has enough so they could be an upstart in surprise team that would not be talked about and one sixty two with all the talent they helps, and the Cincinnati Reds A. A team jump out when you think about all the moves they made the off season, and there are opportunities now with a d. h. two to accompany. The act was the acquisition they made, and maybe a couple of people are out of position so the D. H. is a big thing for a lot of teams. That didn't think that was going to be play, but maybe anticipated it by acquiring certain players. 'cause you kind of look and go. Why did they acquire that guy? He's out of position and now it looks pretty good that they got him. whether it's an cast test. Janos or Who Have you so I I look at teams that were little short pitching, but have talent pitching that over one sixty two. You can't hide those works. I like an to this. You play a golf tournament and one day you can hide your weakness. Try to hide your weakness and four day tournaments almost impossible it comes up and it shows up and that's what a one sixty two does not who don't have the depth and the roster or the the minor league sustain. The unforeseen of injuries or the likes of that, and you said earlier that the team that gets creative Mike have an advantage. You earn referring any trash cans where you john when you said creative. How to a strategy field would. Typically be part of our DNA today and I mean getting runners over is going to be more important getting that run and I think some things are not gonNA deviate. They're just going to go ahead and still try to smash the ball and power. It's way, but I think the teams that do deviate in sixty games would have a decided advantage for creating. Creating an opportunity to increase their chances, because in one hundred and sixty two may not mean much. I May I may I may agree with with some of the analytics that come out there but I I would argue that in a sixty games. You're going to see that it might okay. Couple more minutes left with John. Could you Bobby Cox that we get to here we we, we got to hear every word that came out of his mouth that would have to be an NC seventeen on on on on the Games right. One of my favorites Bobby Cox. top of the first two outs of the first and Inevitably it would be yelling. Both ways go way. I thought we had played the bottom of. That's fantastic. Oh, John. That's amazing. I love that story that is that is amazing before I let you go. How is Your Golf? Game Are you ready for it is it is good. Yeah, I mean I'm GonNa club championship I can't. I have been able to play my club championship. Because normally in October, the last twelve years. That's been out of the pictures. They moved it to today and tomorrow and I gotta take out a bunch of guys that are half my age, but this is a great. Test for me to get ready for Tahoe, which is in a couple of again? And you know I don't have many things that get my competitive juices going, but these this is. This is one of so for the American Century that is part of NBC sports. It should Romo bolts getting larger in his rear view mirror. What should we say? This is the first time for all of us. you know, of course we'RE NOT GONNA. Have fans their whole idea. Playing is going to make it easier for some of the guys who got nervous for for obvious reasons, ten thousand people standing on a whole. But I think for all of us who have been in the same boat. It should be one of the best. Golf playing tournaments in Tahoe's history I would think just based on the availability to get out there and work on your game Dan if they're no fans. I Sean Payton won't have a boat to hit off of a deck. Sean Payton off anybody's time. You won't have that as a backstop on that part. It's going to be odd, but I'm glad that they're doing it. And all the proceeds are going to go to charity local charities and you know. NBC is is is certainly a big part of this tournament of course putting it. On TV, so hopefully, it's an exciting and another opportunity for people to watch something who? Haven't had much sports. Recently. Brady Payton game with with Tiger and Phil. I mean on national television. What did you think of that one? But that's the thing. Most people don't understand is sitting at their pouts. Probably questioning Brady's handicap I can promise you until you've done something like that to you know it's being broadcast. It's way different than hitting casual golf ball so i. completely understand where he and some of the guys who have never done that could get a little nervous, but then I saw settled down there a little bit the fax back nine and There's not that easy. I'm I. Tell People all the time. But being an armchair quarterback is much easier than sitting at home watching family feud when you got all the answer. Is a lot easier than being under the gun of a five-second heck every year answer now. Crazy answers so tastic I wish everybody could have to push a button whatever they think is easy, and somehow be morphed into doing it, and they'll see. It's not John I. Look Forward to seeing you out there and Tahoe. I always enjoy our chat immensely. Thanks for the call. We'll chat soon. My pleasure. Thanks got it right back catch. That's John smoltz. "A little bit of baseball are baseball hall of fame, friend from MLB and also from Fox is John smoltz. How're you John? I'm doing good man. Thanks hope you are too I. Am my help. My family's healthy We're going a little bit crazy, but you know we're knocking on wood on that front of hoping for you. Yes, absolutely excellent, all right John in your days in Major League baseball from nineteen. eighty-eight all the way through to two thousand nine. You saw quite a. Quite, some conversations between baseball and the Union. What were you thinking? You're watching all of these machinations over the last few weeks trying to put it two thousand twenty season together. Well much like when it went through it personally as a player, you realize that. Not everything that everybody here is in the media, or in the you know the papers accurately. Going to be described, sometimes it works as posturing sometimes, it's a scenario where it's not even close, but I thought the whole time that something would be worked out. I remained optimistic. Just having been through it. Knowing that it's not always depicted the right way, so look. It's always A. Tenuous situation when you're trying to negotiate something under normal circumstances, I can't even imagine what it's like. To throw in a million other up possibilities in trying to figure that out, so it was definitely on the outside. Looking in people don't really understand. How this came to be, but the good news is, it's It's where it is right now, and baseball is going to be played and it's going to be. One of the most intriguing and exciting seasons. We've ever seen although be at sixty games. That's the big part of what makes it so intriguing, exactly and I I do want to get into that baseball discussion and go down that wormhole and talk about the game and what the season might look like from from a strategy standpoint and obviously wins and losses standpoint, but I do WanNa. Just linger a little bit here on what you just said about. Not everything gets reported properly What did you mean by by that? John I think that you send your message out to at times and and depending on how it's received or depending on how it's even. You know. Written sometimes gets. Little pockets of information. Get out whether. That's the majority or the minority of feeling something in a in a situation where you have. a negotiation going on, so you know I I just know that back when we were doing what we're doing. It was total different set of circumstances. It was a more veteran-laden kind of experienced. Leadership in baseball was more filled with older players. This is a totally different set of. Players and totally different set of circumstances so i. don't think the to climate quite come together as the same and leadership different. So you know all that being said you're GONNA have. things and you just hope you hope. Players are as informed as they can be, and and certainly represent the voices as best as they can. Yeah I know but I guess the mistrust between both sides still lingers. Hi, John I mean that that there's no doubt there's there's definitely going to be a bumpy roads down the road I. Mean They still have to work out kinks? Just like again you know the the last three to four years You're going to have two sets. Narrative players are going to believe something. The owners are going to believe something. That's why you have an impasse at times, and you try to figure out how to come. To An understanding and you hope. As we were hoping that leadership represents the mass of opinion rather than a small pocket. You know that you're not being in that anymore I have no way of knowing you know how how that played out, but but but I go back to. You know having this. It's hard to carve out a time out like they should have been a time out in our world. Because this is unprecedented circumstances so disagreements should definitely be on hold, but the time out should have figured out a way to get baseball played, and however it got to I'm glad were playing baseball exactly and you know everyone's supposed to report by I guess next Wednesday on just a matter of days John smoltz here on the rich Eisen. Show biggest challenges what for getting ready here? But honestly the biggest challenge is going to seem weird. The biggest challenges the mental change every player is going to have to have, and I'm talking about playing in front of an empty stadium to. To have it four months off to not being in game, scenarios that you would be totally your body's ready for this type of the year to make that push. It's GonNa be fresh is going to help a lot of people who've been hurting and have injuries. That's definitely going to be once side effect. This good but I think players are gonNA have to be creative in their thinking of how do they stay? Maintain focus without the the extra Adrenalin with fans and the extra narrative that you're there. Normally used to write. Travel is going to be somewhat the same although regional. it's just GONNA be odd for a while and the players. Especially they're going to have the most to try to get ready in their own work is the pitcher because the pictures are going to miss out on a lot of reps that get them ready for the up and down and get them ready for the long haul of the season. Now it's a sprint so pictures. The first two weeks are going to have to figure out how quickly they're connected to the mechanics, the pitchers with the least. Awkward mechanics in other words, the ones that are most tied to their mechanics have smooth delivery are going to be the wants to jump out. In front and having advantage. The high working high-velocity watch needed to get in tune with their mechanics may struggle early on, and let's face it the pressures on because you don't have a lot of time to struggle. In theory because you know, it's only sixty games. So give me some names of some of those pictures that you're talking about John Well. You know I mean the veteran. pitchers should have a nod anyways. 'cause they've been through so much of of of what they know. They can it right, but I think off hand you know. Guys who don't throw super hard commands, commander strike so I think strike are going to have a real decided to bandage in the early end The guys would stop you. Have the hitter still have tasted hip face pitching live pitching? That's that's all true, but I think of of of in this this world like maybe a Kyle Hendricks his name is. That just jumps out to me. He throws strikes. He could probably take four months off and always throw strikes..

I yeah my check you into some you're gonNA come back and every one of those you're going to beat Josh Hader when he's in the underdogs just their journey and how many times they were basically for this team is going to be you can't quantify things anymore in this game you can't say older team they basically did it with the IT factor of inside that clubhouse doc doubts going on but they truly never gave into them and world series we had Kevin Millar last hour he thinks that Strasbourg I I luckily not not close in that world but scholar Garrett Cole I mean he had the greatest year at the greatest time and it's going when people were coming out saying this guy doesn't strike out enough guys he doesn't do this he doesn't do that just on that contract and who again will he go to so those great under appreciated player so he too is going to impact a listen in game six and he said why don't we extend the first base bag bag yeah what what do you think about extending that usually to solve but have a different look to it and I really believe the reason that compared to softball but I don't know I could that could be a wrong guest but then you have the trickiness of being foul territory so But I totally agree with that I think it would alleviate what a million people look at one thing they're going to see a bunch of different ways so that would help he didn't think I would like it let me see what we got see what I can I just tell you what this whole and and you know let the you know the power behind her why not let's let the umpires have emotion let's have the pictures have wouldn't be too long for me if I struck somebody out at Amman I'd love to watch empire more mature than why don't why are pitchers doing it album I have is when you if I show you up as a pitcher then you go I'm GonNa throw I'M GONNA hit asks Washington Out Terry him down moving and having more fun I'm okay if you want to carry your Damn Youtube after we're done through me mocking Carlos Perez men play of the day back in the day and you know he had a little shimmy every time he struck I said well you watch the very next time I'm going to do it and I do this lock Shimmy the facing five days later in Montreal he said when I strike out SMOLTZ and Montreal everything emergency I was not striking out luckily he didn't sit on him doesn't allow you to celebrate great things because we're always worried about how does we're GONNA find out a pitchers decide to have a little that that performance you were as good as Strasbourg let's put it that way over it I don't have anything left you know just left it on the field how about that you're the Greg Maddux being safe travels back John thanks for joining sometimes and then we like them because they're different Tim carver was different it's still with the bengals and I thought boy he's got personality never thought that he would be the and now you get people who go oh I don't like college where shelf life if you're just talking to people and that's what Smoltz does he does a wonderful.

"Having talked to a lot of lot of sports TV exacts on this is sort of two full. There's probably a group that doesn't like to bring those people in out of. You know, whatever sort of you know, however, you want to sort of think as to why they're not doing that. And then there are others who are like my job is to get the best possible person on the air. So even if this person was a jerk as a player coach or even if this person, you know, the was suspended for baseball for for PD's, etcetera. That's that's not of my concern. My concern is to get the best possible communicator on the air. So I think there's a couple of ways thing about this. You obviously had a good relationship with the press. This is not specific to you as an individual, but I'm just wondering where you stand on this in terms of, should that be a litmus test, should should, should the players who ultimately get jobs in broadcasting after they play? Should they be people who at least respected the press or were cooperative of the press or or or should that factor? I'd be curious your. I think it's an interesting in pretty good question that may not have, you know, for me might have different answers than it would for other people. I think there's, you know, the way. If you follow the way the world works is changing socially, it's changing from a network standpoint, and some people are intrigued with content and like what you know moving the needle. That seems to be more important for some people than the actual knowledge or the well-being of how good there. And I think that that's a determination that I can't answer from from a hiring standpoint from a, you know, from an upper management, what I can tell you is that I think there is value in having relationships and value knowing the other side, not every experience is going to be a great one. I certainly had my my challenges within the media. I was always available. I felt like at times my time got taken advantage of in my value from that experiences. I know now how to differentiate between a player and now I'm part of that, right? I'm part of the media and knowing that everyone had a job to do. Not everyone when you're a player respected the job or the role the way others did. And sometimes that comes out and I think when it translates moving forward, I don't think that that that prerequisite comes in to play a lot of times I would like to think it should, but sometimes the coverage you get and the notoriety you have Trump's at now you still have to be able to deliver and overcome those those those issues. So that's a complex question that I know for me. I know in the beginning I would have been considered, I'm being honest, I would have been considered a very boring guy because I don't really have any social networking. I really don't do much outside of my hobbies and enjoy what I do, but I'm actually a very passionate guy is just. You get a chance to see it now and in the lens of the TV. Whereas before you would know what I was doing and I liked it that way. So I think there's two to kinda trains collided you got the, everything's gotta get out there. Everyone's gotta know about what you do and then you got the guy or the other person that just does their job and does it pretty well and doesn't really care if everybody knows what's going on. I don't know if that makes sense. If I've answered a question or not, it does. No, I appreciate the perspective and it's, you know, it's not when you're gonna get all the time. John Smoltz is an analyst for the MLB network and has been so since twenty ten, he's also should say studio and he's also a booth analyst for Fox Sports and his role.
