"Months. This is the globalist stay tuned. When former Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe was assassinated in July, his attacker blamed the unification church for impoverishing his family and said Abe who appeared at events sponsored by unification church affiliated groups had promoted it. Well, this has provoked a public backlash against the religious organization and prompted an investigation which could threaten the church's legal status. John Nelson write as an associate professor in Japanese politics at Cambridge University and a career foundation fellow at chatham House. He joins me now. John, what's the background then to the unification church? Well, I mean, unification church has had a long history, of course, in Japan. Japan, of course, has also a history of wanting to protect religious organizations, part of the political climate in the post war period of ensuring public freedoms meant that organizations such as the unification church, the moonies have been able to function in a pretty liberal environment, but of course the concern has been about the way the organization solicits support from its members and you'll remember, of course, around the time of the assassination of former prime minister Abe, there were reports that the assassin was nurturing a grievance because of the way in which the church secured money from his own family and blamed mister Abe, of course, for being partly responsible for that. And what we're seeing now, of course, is a great deal of public concern in Japan about the apparent close ties politically between the governing liberal Democratic Party and the church. And the absence of any willingness on the part of the establishment to confront the church for its very dubious activities. Mister kishida, the current prime minister of course, is facing a lot of criticism for being seen as having failed to act in response to widespread public criticism. Somewhere in the region of 80% of the Japanese public according to a recent poll feels the government has mishandled this issue. And mister Keisha, who is vulnerable, having just lost three cabinet ministers over a series of scandals. In the last month or so, is having to ramp up his response. He's being criticized in the Japanese parliament in the diet. And now we've just seen a request from the Ministry of Education and culture to investigate further the church. And there is talk of a possible decision depending on the response to this request to potentially ban the church and its activities under the religious corporation law. And it's the survivable then for kishida and his party. Well, there's no doubt that he's in a very difficult position. I mean, it's not just the church issue, but the preoccupation with this question. Has meant that he is facing delays in the diet in terms of passing the government's second supplementary budget. That's a real concern in terms of his ability to deliver on his governing platform. There's talk of a possible cabinet reshuffle to deal with the fact that he's lost so many key ministers. And even the replacement for the latest minister who was forced to resign minoro tarada, the internal affairs minister is also being targeted by the opposition parties on alleged corruption charges. Whether a cabinet reshuffle is enough to save mister Keisha is an open question. Some have even speculated that there might be a snap election as soon as the new year. I don't think that is likely because there are other issues on the horizon that mister Keisha, I think, is keen to focus on not least the fact that next year Japan will be the host of the G 7 in Hiroshima, mister Keisha's own hometown. But there's no doubt that the prime minister is facing a very difficult political situation. I wonder if support of the government's been bolstered by Japan's victory over Germany in the World Cup. Well, there's no doubt that the feel good factor of that extraordinary result is good for the country, but I don't see any sign that that's being attributed in any way to the role of the government. I mean, it is a remarkable achievement, and there has even been talk of some sort of public holiday. But for now, I think the LDP is facing a very difficult political situation. It can take a little bit of comfort from the fact that the opposition parties are themselves very weak. So there's no obvious political alternative to the LGB, but there is, of course, a lot of talk about potential alternative prime ministers. For example, is a very popular figure within the Japanese government and there's a lot of speculation about who might succeed mister Keisha, but we're not there yet. John, thank you very much indeed. "You in Dallas. 7 13 here in London, 1513 if you're listening in Tokyo. Now just how ironclad is the U.S. commitment to protecting its allies, South Korea and Japan. Senior figures from all three countries meet today to discuss their response to the continued noisy saber rattling from North Korea. I'm joined now by John Nelson Wright, who's associate professor in Japanese politics at Cambridge University and a career foundation fellow at chatham House Heller jug. Good morning. Good to have you with us. So tell us who has met today and what do we know about what's being said? Well, we've had meetings between essentially the three deputy foreign ministers of Japan, South Korea, and the United States. Wendy Sherman, of course, is in Tokyo to talk to her Japanese and South Korean counterparts. The purpose of the meeting is to send a very clear signal that the U.S. and its two principal northeast Asian allies. Shoulders are shoulder and dealing with what is expected to be potentially a 70 for your test. From the DPRK ahead of the midterm elections in the United States. And of course it comes on the back of a series of missile tests. 27 tests over the course of the year range of cruise missile tests, ballistic missile tests, more recently by North Korea, the expectation is that Kim Jong-un is seeking to use these provocations. To keep the United States on the back foot. And therefore, it's very important given the vulnerabilities of both Japan and South Korea in the face of North Korea's increasing military capabilities to demonstrate that the alliances, the two alliances are as solid as possible. And the most welcome development of course is the improvement in dialog between soul and Tokyo. And this is, I think, symbolically impractically an opportunity to reinforce that message. United with a common enemy, what do we think will be achieved by this? I mean, you mentioned a very important dialog between South Korea and Japan, but in terms of the way that the United States and South Korea and Japan can operate together in the face of a threat from North Korea. What can actually be decided? Well, I mean, we've seen both trilateral joint exercises and also current exercises going on between South Korea and the United States. All of this, I think, is an attempt to send a signal to Kim Jong-un that the alliance remained militarily strong. And that there will be a proportionate response if the north does anything it would be considered to be even more provocative. And nuclear test, of course, would not be new. It would be the 7th nuclear test from the DPRK. And the traditional route, of course, is to use the United Nations and the sanctions regime, problem there, of course, is that we've seen a reluctance recently by both China and Russia to impose further pain on the DPRK. And therefore, the only recourse that the United States has, but it's a significant one is to strengthen military cooperation to ensure that the north doesn't do

"I went from getting benched as a freshman and not playing in the singles lineup to transferring, having this amazing experience at San Diego state with coach John Nelson, where we literally went from getting burned out to the first three weeks of practice. We're on a jiu-jitsu map. And I'm like, what's going on? And I started to learn this whole different outlook on the game, and within a semester won a national championship when the national indoors and doubles, right? And so I had these major events as a player, once I was done, I tried to play a little bit. I got a contract in a lot of injuries. Anyways, got back into said, you know what? I want to coach. I want to teach because that's what I felt happened to me. I want to give that back and started sending us blessed to go up to university of the Pacific and Stockton California for 9 years, and I and a half years and when I was there, that's where I think set me up for what I'm doing now. And kind of having the bandwidth to have an ATP event, but also I'm just as concerned about our junior aces three and 5 year olds right now, actually, I'm stressed out about making sure they're taking care of. Because program interruption during the tournament. Yeah, so when I was at in Stockton, you know, Stockton's number one great city, but very dangerous city, right? Hard hit, not you don't think a tennis. But the boss I had my mentor I had out there, Ted Leland, you know, he would always say you're not just a coach. And so I took that on and I started doing everything I could to grow the game of tennis from I taught preschool in churches to lining black tops on elementary schools to teaching the PE teachers how to teach tennis to getting them equipment through the USTA to bringing challengers to Stockton. You know, we had Francis tiafoe won his first challenger, top hundred in Stockton, California, right? So I got to do all these little things that then kind of gave me this awareness and I still am still learning still struggling still failing at a lot of things. Personally, about the job and stuff, but it keeps me going to kind of do these things that you're talking about, which, you know, you get some successes along the way when you're pushing forward. Now, we talk about Stockton, right? Because I had a lot of pushback. We brought our pro events to Chicago, right? And we are on the south side of Chicago. We're in the fourth quarter zip code in the city. But proximate to some very nice neighborhoods and approximate to some highways, which allows us to draw from all around the city. But there was a lot of concern, right, around having a pro event in this neighborhood, probably the same as you having a proven and Stockton. How was that process of convincing them that you could have this event hosted without any sort of issues and problems? Or did you even get that? Oh yeah, I had one of our, one of our TV crew media crew got held at gunpoint one night at the hotel, right? And so imagine that imagine that conversation getting pulled into the office from the supervisor.

"Says that this vaccine mandate will impact different industries in dramatically different ways. Now this new federal mandate Requires a private companies with 100 or more employees to get their workers to get vaccinated. Otherwise, those workers will have to get tested weekly in Puget Sound. Major tech employers like Microsoft, Google and Facebook already require employees to get vaccinated if they return to work in the office. But e commerce giant Amazon has not imposed any vaccine mandate for its employees. Industry experts say many warehouse workers might quit. If they have to get the shot. There will be some disruption, There will be some some employees. Is that decide to leave based on The requirements, but on the other hand, will also see a lot of people that are able to return to the workplace that might have been feeling uncomfortable or unsafe. So I think there will be some shifting that takes place. Inevitably federal contractors federal workers, healthcare workers also are impacted by this program. Workers who refused to get vaccinated could be penalized. I checked in with the Food Industry Association, which represents hundreds of grocery stores. They are also very worried about employees quitting because they don't want to get vaccinated that Como Suzanne Faan protesters, defying a judge's order to stay away from schools in Vancouver, Washington Friday. "And today's guests are laura nelson and john nelson the co founding siblings of seed beauty aka the brains behind color pop and the launch pad for mega brands like k. k. w. beauty and kylie cosmetics. So we dropped this interview in january twenty twenty and has changed since then especially with with seed. Beauty steaks and brands like kylian k. k. wbz. I know that the majority of both of those companies are now in cody's hands but the one thing that's constant with see beauty and color pob. They continue to innovate and crush it without high quality makeup. That's so affordable and their club sellouts stat to this day just last month. They launched this whole collection to celebrate. Malibu barbie's fiftieth birthday. And i mean it baby. Want to run out and get like a pink convertible it so fun. Plus they're one of the most followed beauty brands on tiktok with nearly a million followers so they have a lot more followers than like mac. Let's say and even sephora so toss in your airpods and get acquainted with the most trail-blazing people in beauty today by the way. This was such a fun throwback episode to listen to again because carleen. And i can't wait to travel and go on site to do interviews again. We just had so many great memories of being behind the scenes to see where all of the color pop magic happens at their headquarters in california. So you'll hear all that too without further ado enjoy. Welcome back to breaking beauty podcasts. Everyone hello jill dying carleen. Hey rock into the new decade twenty twenty. Ooh i can't believe we're halfway through the month. Already things fly and episode episode one hundred. We have a milestone already. How do we do that. It's all a bit of a blur but also seems like we just started i. It's so true. It's so true. And i don't know how many of our listeners follow us on instagram. If you aren't already pleased head on over to give us a follow at breaking beauty podcast and you're gonna wanna stay tuned on there because we're going to be doing a couple of very exciting contests and giveaways celebrating our one hundred episode. Were kind of harkening back to our roots today because of course when we did start which was almost three years ago we launched with founder episodes. You know we were all about getting the back story behind the best selling beauty products. We launched as a monthly. We've kind of evolved now. Where our weekly we talk about the breakthrough products people and moments and beauty. But we do have an epic factor episode today. And i love these. We go so deep on like the whole brand story. I think it's my favorite style so today we are speaking to the founders of seed beauty and that is laura and john nelson. They're a sibling. Duo they're not married and they are genius behind collar pop four three beauty soul which is a body. Line a few other lines that you may have heard of kylie cosmetics k. w. tatty westbrook. That's right and so we were very honored to be able to go on site to oxnard california to the collar pop headquarters and we spoke to john and laura in their first podcast ever. That's right so the parent company is called seed beauty and not a company that you hear about a little bit less. It's not you know it's not the viral sensation like these other ones and that's because it is a beauty incubator so all under one roof seed beauty conceives of a product or a brand. They manufacture the products. They shipped the products all the rnd happens. They're all the safety testing originally. There were no retailers at all so even the customer service was almost like an inhouse retail. Everything happens under one roof and that way products get to you faster. It's more responsive and that's why this whole model is like the future of beauty. It's hard to believe that seed beauty only really launched in two thousand fourteen. That's like yesterday to have all of these viral success stories. I mean look at kylie Fifty one percent of the company was sold to cody for six hundred million. You know that's pretty groundbreaking. Yeah and so. The fact that they were the launch pad for. That is incredible. The fact that you know tatty westbrook's line highly anticipated that she chose seed beauty to launch with. I think just says so much for their credibility you know again going back to that quality and just the eye for what's next and what the trends are and being able to deliver so fast as everybody is watching them right now so if you think about like speed quality and price like that triangle that we've all seen more they always say pick to. You can never have all three will see beauty finds a way to tick off all three. You're getting that amazing. Quality like with these are shadows. You're getting the color pay. You're getting like these amazing on trend shades and you get it really fast. So let's talk about the best seller. I mean we'll talk about color. Pop i because it would be impossible for us to deep dive into of these brands. And i think you know the influence brands are obviously the conceptualizing there. The brainchild of those influencers but color pop is really the in house line that they started with. Yes that was their own. Laura's going to talk about the concept for that and how it's really different. But i think color pop is really well known for the eye. Shadows right super shock. Yeah the super shock shadows. When i started in two thousand fourteen. They were four dollars each and now they're six dollars each but they are incredibly bouncy texture. They're.

Dispensationalism

Dispensationalism

"This is a movement in theology that began in the eighteen hundreds and came on very strong and the nineteen hundreds. So let's take a look at it where it came from and what it's all about well. The story of dispensationalist begins with John Nelson. Darby he was born in eighteen hundred in Westminster London but his family roots were Irish and so when he came of age to go to college he was sent to Trinity College Dublin. He excelled as a student there and won the classics prize. That skill set would come in very handy for him later. He be involved in translating the Bible. It translate the Bible into German into Dutch and French and even the Complete Bible into English. He had his own translation. Darby would die in eighteen. Eighty two. He's known for two things being one of the early founders and what is called the Plymouth Brethren Church and also being the father or founder of dispensationalist him. This came about in the eighteen thirties. Eighteen forties there may be four significant features dispensationalist them that Darby began and then developed by others. The first is to see a distinction between Israel and the Church prior to dispensationalist them. You could say it was Covenant Theology and there was a connection between Israel and the Church. The understanding was there was one people of God but Darby began with a distinction between those two two peoples of God as it were and so God had a distinct and unique plan for Israel and a distinct and unique plan for the Church. This led to the second feature of dispensational and that is to see scripture as divided into dispensations. Now Darby had seven of them the Scofield Reference Bible. We'll talk about that in a minute. It had seven of them. Dispensationalist were not always agreed on the number of dispensations but they did agree on the concept. That was the idea that God dealt with humanity in different ways as he moved through the dispensations of scripture. So we have the distinction. Between Israel and the Church we have the dispensations the third feature is a literal hermitic that gets applied to prophecy and apocalyptic literature once that literal. Herman is applied. Well that leads us to the fourth feature and that is all of the end times events and charts and you've heard of these events of courses the rapture and that's followed by the seven year tribulation and that's followed by the second coming of Christ and the knots followed by the Millennium and then enter into the eternal state. This of course is using the book of Daniel and the book of revelation applying that little harmonic and seeing this as the literal timetable. For the EN times or for Eschaton Legiti. So those are some of the features that were given to dispensations by John Nelson Darby. Three things helped dispensational ISM get very popular in the twentieth century. The first was the beginning of the Bible Institute Movement Moody had one in Chicago. His was not the first. But it was certainly the flagship institution and these institutions sprung up. All over both the UK and the United States and they taught dispensational. The second thing was prophecy conferences. These were very popular in the early. Nineteen hundreds. They were known a Lake Philadelphia. They were in Dallas Texas. They were everywhere. And then the third thing that popularized dispensational was the scofield reference. Bible named for Cyrus Ingersoll. Scofield who was born in eighteen forty three and died in nineteen twenty one he used the dispensations as the framework to understand the Bible and its structure any applied that dispensational harmonic to texts and it also put forth that dispensational distinction of a separation between Israel and the church. So there you have it. Dispensational SOM started by John Nelson Darby and furthered along by the violence to movement. The prophecy conferences in the Scofield Reference Bible in the Early Twentieth Century.

Japan's new defense guidelines highlight military ambitions

"Japan currently has an exclusively defense oriented, military, policy, and pacifist constitution. But now in the face of increased Chinese capability and aggression new guidelines of an issue, which may fundamentally change this. John Nelson right is a senior lecturer in East Asia at Cambridge University and an associate fellow at the Chatham house Asia program, John thanks for joining us this morning. The national defense program guidelines is a policy document that outlines the nation's defense objectives for the next decade. As such must address the new reality in the security landscape. And this was signed off today aircraft carriers seemed to be the most contentious part of this. Can you tell us what that contains? Yes. This is a commitment on the power to the Japanese government to reequip its existing destroys the clouds destroy to allow them to carry vertical takeoff aircraft in the past. They've used helicopters. And this is raise concerns and some quarters of this is effectively the beginning, Japan acquiring aircraft carriers the equivalent the government has been keen to challenge that association and the language that's being used describing these as so-called multi-purpose operation destroys reflects, I think sensitivity in Japan, and in the wider region about this enhancement of Japan's capabilities, but enhancement undoubtedly is these ships will not only have the capacity to be equipped with f thirty five fifth generation fighter planes purchased from the United States. But also, I understand. There will be some possibility that American planes might be deployed on these ships at some point. So there's no doubt that Japan is increasing its whose production capabilities, and it's increasing its digital work in a more flexible fashion with the United States to deal with the growing challenge particularly of China in the region. US driven. I mean aside from Trump's buy America policy Japan has a security treaty with the US which involves Japan providing defense in the US maintain strike capabilities. But I mean, neither in the present. At the present time have the firepower necessary to counter China the distance. This is why these these multipurpose vessels a needed. Is that correct? That's right. I mean, I think this is dealing with the basics reality. China's increasing defense capabilities in the East China Sea where of course, Japan and China have a territorial dispute over the so-called son, Cinco de L U islands. But also more broadly in the South China Sea. Where course, we know the China has been acquiring aggressive force protection capabilities. And of course, building its own out Fisher reefs as a means of asserting its maritime, dominance, Japan is worried about this. They point to China itself of courses, acquiring a aircraft. Carrier all of this. In addition with other elements in the national defense program guidelines designed to increase power capabilities not just aircraft carriers, but the acquisition acquisition of long range hypersonic missiles, all of this. I think is an attempt to deal with that basic news to TJ reality. Whether we should be concerned about it. I think is another question. Japan's defense constitution remains in place. Although prime minister, of course, is looking to revise it. And the attitude on the part of public opinion and critically, of course, other parties in Japan opposition parties and the government's own coalition partner. Komeito remain still very cautious validating the challenges that basic normative commitment to defensive security policy. Is the US in driving this? Well, the US is under Donald Trump. Of course, it has multiple objectives. You mentioned, of course, the economic relationship. That's hugely important. Mister obey is under real pressure from Donald Trump to sign a bilateral trade agreement. He's reluctant to do that. He's concerned that this will open up pressure on Japan to open up Integra, cultural sector, and as part of that we've seen in this new defense policy from Japan a commitment to buy American one hundred thirty five fighter planes at one hundred million dollars a piece that's a huge commitment in terms of financial outlays on the part of the Japanese government. The hope in Tokyo, this will offset some of that pressure from Donald Trump, whether willow not of course is another question.
