"It's just going to go away. I don't think they care. Again, you print more money. It's exactly what they've done and Albany, Washington, D.C., the solution is tax the rich, demonize your opponent, raised taxes and hope that a future generation deals with the mess that you're making. That is literally their mindset. They don't care. And we do. Like, we genuinely care about making sure that our kids and grandkids have a better America than what we inherited. Like, we genuinely believe that. They don't give a damn. Folks on the left, especially these radical socialists, they care about power and politics more about people. I guess I look at it. When I say that John Moore speaking about the voter, right? The democratic voter, like you have to understand. And again, like you said, are you that selfish? You don't care about your family and your grandkids and I don't have children yet. I care about what happens to my grandkids. That's like a hundred years away, right? But the point of building a business and getting yourself out there, making money and it's to provide for your family, potentially grandkids, whatever, great grandkids. I guess I look at the liberal voter and I ask the question, do you not think about this stuff? Is your is your financial freedom and your children's financial freedom and your grandchildren? Is that not important to you? Because if you actually think the printing money is a real answer, you're out of your freaking mind, but they're losing their minds and they're doubling down on their playbook. It's a classic democratic playbook at what they do every single time. They are deathly afraid and they're going to lose the House and Senate. So it's the same playbook they've had for generations. They're wrong on issues. They can never argue the merits of issues. What do they do? They try and scare the hell out of people. It's what they do every single election cycle. They'll people with fear or the anger that if you vote Republican, I've heard in a million times, they're going to kill your grandma. They're going to cut social security. There is going to be, you know, riding and looting in the streets. This is congressman Jamal Brown, our next clip. He actually said an actual Civil War could break out if Republicans win in the midterms. It was also emboldened Republicans and the far right and white nationalists across the country to begin to believe that it is their time to not just take power in the house, but the Senate, The White House, and state houses across the country, and we got to understand that this is a group that has been radicalized by the great replacement myth and many other things and have been pushing for violence and pushing for evening Civil War. They're doubling down. They're doubling down. And you know more about this than I do, I think. This great replacement theory that they throw out, they're like, Tucker Carlson's the biggest great replacement there..

"Hopefully get some great results. One of the things I imagined that you'd be being prepared for is the possibility of a hot weekend, although I think it's a wet one likely in Sydney this weekend. Because it was very hot as it can be as you well know. And we all guys running around with cool food. Yeah, the boys will still go over the call suits. Yeah, the weather doesn't look that great. It looks like the storm that you guys have had up there is working its way down. Down to the south, but checking out the weather. It is going to be a wet weekend. Obviously, we did have some running up at Sydney in that month's last year. We had some we had some good results there in The Rain, but hopefully we can go there and improve a little bit more, but yeah, cool suit for something probably won't need too much up there, but hopefully we can get the setups right for the wets. And come home with a good result. If you go the two races, one Saturday night, one Sunday afternoon, they're both 300 K so that's as long as we not normally go outside that is the dual compound size, aren't they? Yes, yes. So we're looking at running the super soft ties. Which you will have to swap at least once during the race and in the soft tyres as well. So we haven't had a chance to test on these super soft tyres, no team has yet, but it's going to be interesting here. The car translates from the soft to the super soft tyre, but we'll see how we going. There was a time last year and I seem to remember some rights made where cars were W's to either the software service cars. We used twice. Yeah, there was a few teams that looked at that. Obviously, put them on it, they are the starter with them at the start of the race. Remove them and then yeah, they stuck them on the end of the race. So it's going to be interesting what some of the teams come up with and that's what makes the category so interesting. It's been for a spectator point of view. It's good to see that there's a mixed mix. We had a lot of different winners on the podium and that last year. So hopefully we get the same sort of thing and it's going to be an interesting interesting job for the engineers to come up with that and try and come up with the best strategy. John talking about strategies there is a 300 kilometer race go to offer a lot more strategy than a two 50. It's going to be a little bit of the unknown. We don't obviously don't know about this new super soft tyre, whether the degradation is going to be a lot worse. Whether they're going to hang in there for a lot longer, I think it's just going to have to be played out as the race goes on. And see how the race is going, look, we might not looking at the weather, we might not be able to go to the super soft tyres look like it could be possibly no wet weekend, but I think it's something that it's going to be worked out on the race on the day and then the engineers will have a cut out for them. And hopefully we come out with we can work it out as we go. And we'll see how we go. The night race do you expect the strategy to be a lot different there to what the day race will be on the Sunday? Yeah, obviously, temperature plays a big part. Whether the degradation of the tyre is better or worse, yeah, we'll say what happens. All right, John, well, we wish all the very best to team 18 for the weekend and we certainly hope to see you coming out hard and strong and putting up a good result. I know that Charlie will be eagerly looking forward to it. I suppose he'll be hitting just to try out. It won't he. Yeah, yeah, spoke to him on the weekend. He was up there, reading the paper, sitting at home, he couldn't really go out and do much. He's said he's pools overflowing and sitting in front of the river there. So yeah, a lot of rain up there and hopefully it's a little bit dry. Hopefully it doesn't move down too quickly and for Sydney. At the top of New South Wales at the moment, but yeah, he's right. He's looking forward to this season. He's super fun. This is his this is his lava since passion. He loves racing. Hopefully we can turn on the good show for him and turn things around from last year and get him a good result. All right, well thank you very much for joining us inside 7 cars. John Moore and to all his teammates and the very best. Happy and fruitful weekend. Look forward to talking to you shortly after that and again on in terms of how thank you John Moore. "This is my name. That's my name. I am the beautiful black woman. That's my name. Okay, call my name. So if we were to think about the water and all that the water does carry, the one thing that we haven't done is mentioned more names. More people that folks should read. So I know Jasmine, you mentioned will perdomo before I would mention Leon and the Matthews, are there other names that we're like, okay, we talked about these three poems and these three poets, but like y'all should have a syllabus. Yeah, definitely. I mean, yes, anyone. Malcolm friend, tattoo laviera, Roberto cigar Garcia. Ariana Brown, John Moore. Damn Matthews. Roberto, Garcia. Maria Fernandez, of course, Kyle Lopez. Jennifer muritz and Macaulay. There's so many incredible incredible writers, Afro LatinX across the Diaspora. And some folks who claim it claim that term and some who push against it, right? And wherever people are and those lashes of identity that Terrell pointed out to us earlier, still calls attention to still says read, still does learn include and actively include center. Yeah, and I think what the water teaches us with all of this, whether it's our syllabus, our own writing, our identity, is this idea of fluidity, right? And that is, it is in constant flux and it is in constant change and transformation and that the water gives and it takes. And I think we should allow ourselves to give and take and to be fluid with those terms with how we identify with how we are in one space one day and in another space the next and how we take up space. And I think that for me, that's really one of the lessons of the water and what it carries and what it can teach us. And we don't have to battle about it. We can just trust that we can ebb and flow and change. Find the flow. Find the flow and go with the flow. With the flow. Go with the flow. Be like water and be like water. Yes. This is Daryl. This is Jasmine. This is raina. And we will see you soon..

"So what if a guy loves high goes down you turn to what jakobs of oral John Moore guy in the right side goes down? Who do you turn to? John Moore, Brady Lyle. You don't have a lot there. To fix things. And that's why I think we're going to probably hit on this later of what we think the team will trade for at the deadline. Another way I think could dismantle promising season for the bruins is a swabian injury. I think it Jeremy swimming injury and net. It hurts you in a lot of different ways. Obviously, I think a full Mark gets in. I mean, if either get injured, it's not good. But I feel like Swami is kind of riding that momentum. You know, he's got that momentum. He's young. This is a good reps for him. Omar is still kind of adjusting. If swimming gets injured, I think you're in some real trouble. And we'll get to that in a bit. Also another thing that could dispense with promising season for the bruins. World ends. Well, then that would hurt. I'm not saying it's the real end of the world, but yeah, I wouldn't be great. It would make things significantly tough if it was a cataclysmic event. So I told that doesn't happen. On the bright side that also means the mantra Montreal or Toronto will not win the cup either. So if we have to find silver linings we'll also though Toronto can't lose in the first round if there's no playoffs. So then that's also kind of just avoid that scenario then you're right. Let's fingers crossed. Doesn't that happen? It almost happened in 2019, 2020. So that almost did happen. And of course, it was during a president's trophy year. People are still going to go to their graves saying damn. If the world didn't almost end the bruins would have won the cup in the spring of 2020. And I'm here to tell you they probably wouldn't have. Very uplifting season for you isn't it? Yeah, it works. What can go wrong with the bruins and they wouldn't have won anyway in 2020? Aren't you guys so happy you're listening to us right now? All right, so we figured out what would this man promising season? Who is the top score outside of Brad Marshall and David popster rock? Because last year those two guys started off the year injured. So it was like, who's going to kind of step up in their place? But obviously we know those two guys are going to be the top two scorers on the team most likely. I mean, we're not going to sit here and use the score the most goals. David posture not. But outside of that, who is your choice for the top score? Points wise, or goals wise, doesn't matter. I mean, I think it's still pretty easy to map out that. I mean, version I'll be right in the next two, I think he's gonna be like, even if he's fully healthy 82 games, which the burns will be thrilled about. I don't think he's going to crack a hundred points, who knows, but I think if it's outside of that top line, especially I still think it's pretty easy to try to think it's going to be tailor hall..

"What did they do. They got mad. They said no. That's not going to do so. Texas in houston went and played in tampa bay in front of like eleven people and houston. Got no money out of that deal. They didn't get anything and it was kind of like. Are you kidding me. You know what you could have drawn in texas. You had had houston people all over. They'd probably cut prices. Get everybody up there. And so that started it so when the science doing came out and they got busted for it i mean we were thought it was funny. Kind of like really. Okay get off your high horse. Why don't you you know you like to throw other people on the bus. Now you get it so it was an issue. Yeah i mean we. We didn't exactly Hate it. Let's say that still the bad blood. Then there is. It's a good rivalry. it'll be a good rapport. I'm glad they're in the same division. Now yeah yeah. Yeah that's what we've talked about is then being in the same division. We wondered if this would light some kind of fire but that context. That really helps. That's awesome out the does. Yeah and as another as a fan of another team. It's like it's about time something happened to those guys. Because it was like as a mariners fan. I hated the astros for a long time even when they were really bad. Because for some reason it's still win. You know the mariners being contention in september and they still use the astros and get eliminated from the playoffs. You know and then finally that happens. Like vindication in the mariners have had even when texas was going of serious they never did great against the mariners. Those years But you know what as a mariners fan we're kind of in the same boat except that we did actually make it to the world series twice But i'll tell you what i've said as i am not predictions think that the mariners are going to finish in the top three this year. I this i do believe this year. I think they are. I think they're gonna fish in the top three and maybe a chance to compete for a wildcard. I like what they've done over there. I like it a lot I've said a number of times. I have them winning the world series in twenty twenty three rally guy. Yeah because everybody's gonna hit. I feel like that year. What what's the kid's name kalina. Kalina jared kelanic. Yeah that's that's really. That's the one that was in the controversy but that kids a stud. He's really good. And you know what last year as watch another summer camps and watching him. I wasn't like i wasn't overly impressive him because i didn't feel like there's a lot of hustle but now that story comes out where they told him you're not gonna make the big league squad anyway. Like yeah i get it. I wouldn't hustle either. Yeah what's the point..

And they're like eight rose. There's only eight rows and the whole stadium. That are higher than us. I mean we're way but we are kind of behind home plate back over you know but we all of us. It's funny you see them. They all they're all so when i was there. Yeah when when i was a i went to range of stadium globe life in twenty nineteen and it was a sunday afternoon game. Does exactly what you're saying and the ushers we went and sat found our seats. Because you know. I'm a purist i am. I wanna sit. Where i you know i wanna be up against the railing and everything and they were like. No no no. You're not from here. Are you my wife tonight. Look we're like no they're like very clearly get your up here come back into the shade and they had been ushering. Everyone not to their seats that they paid for but to the safer location. They handed me a water. I mean so. I was impressed with the entire experience and it was so hot. Oh and it's great. And here's the thing that i never knew. And i learned this when i became a media so we would go down and batting practice every game and you could go down on the field to stand behind the batting cage and watch the tape right which was pretty cool. Because from that angle. We'll get into watch bother hit out and doing all that and so we can also sit in the dugout you while they're taking batting practice..

So in the old stadium and this is bullying. I'm an old ranger fan. I started back in seventy four. The first game i ever attended. And this was the old old arlington stadium and then they built in ninety. Four the stadium that we just left and so my first year in the press box Back behind where the press is. There's a a like a room where you eat they put out a buffet dinner and you eat dinner and they all these tables to sit at and they have soft drink machines and all of that no beer guess in the old days to be beer but there wasn't beer so you could go get a soft drink or whatever so i'm going to get the orioles are in town and you'll run it over to get a dot co dot coke refill. And as i'm sitting there. I'm doing somebody bumps me and Any turns around no front of me. That's what it was. He was in front of me. And i was just kind of looking at my phone. Getting ready get. And i couldn't see who it was. He was in front of me on the machine. He kinda runs back. He bumps into me. Turns around. grabs is really sorry. I'm sorry about that. I'm like no no problem. And i look it's jim palmer. And he's like cell. Putting on. Jim palmer just apologized to me. I cannot and he was like. Are you sure you. I was like yeah. I'm fine man. "Few years and he talked about when canseco with the rangers that he flew him and his wife out to florida to stay at his house so they could play golf and beat a ride and canseco was always going so it sounds like that guy would probably do the best parts on the team today. Probably the best party. I guess. Golly i would i would probably guess i would probably say something like l. Listen to he got traded so gallo i've seen gala. We've seen go to a couple of things and have a couple of beers. Maybe joey gallo now. Are we playing golf. And beating a rod playing golf and beating rod. They they shot a better score than iraq because felt like it should be clarified. There's so many people on both sides of that argument is good follow bring. I appreciate that all right. John when it comes to hats are you a snapback flex fit or fitted kinda guy or are you. Dad had guy bar caps. You know. I i kinda liked the fid hats. The flexible fitted hats. I really like those. I don't really care. I don't. I'm not old school with the ones that sit up on your head. I just like a good. And i really i forget what they call them now where they look like. They're kind of worn out and used. I really love those hats But but here's what i am. I'm a guy that thinks ball cap. You wear the cat straight on your head. Wear it straight ahead and do that. I coached for a little while with little kids. And i said you know when you walk off the field. You wanna put it backwards. I do that too sometimes. But when you're on the field all going to have a hat straight on. I like to bill a little bit. The flat hat you know. That's not my thing but that wasn't my thing growing up. That's a new thing now. And i'm getting used to but i i don't wear the flat hat i always. Yeah always been the bill o. Bits so what's your favorite fourth-inning snack. Then my fourth inning snack is probably going to be either peanuts like to go get some peanuts or popcorn to go with my beer usually Like anybody who can eat popcorn and brave. Because i find myself just like handful after handful like i'm never gonna get it again like all you know. That's like the one who will not impose so. I'm credentialed media for the texas rangers and they provide free popcorn so it's really a pain because you just can keep going back and just sitting there at your computer just doing down there in. Yes that's awesome. John which current texas ranger could use strike out. Could i struck out who current ranger. It's got to be a pitcher right. So you gotta think of a picture that out so i God they're all athletic. I i would say on this team. They probably. I'll take me yard winning. Be a problem. Let's see if i had to pick one on there now. Maybe you're looking at someone like they just brought in the sky from korea name yang. He looks a little pudgy. Maybe i could you know. "It's i really hate the rule. It just feels like it just feels like little league which you know. I have nothing wrong. There's no problem with little league. But you can't have bids out playing ten to fifteen innings so you got to do something to get him get home early. But professional athletes they can play ten to fifteen days. Have rotations in there for a reason Right that's heap your bench stocked the yankees after garrett cole went what five. And a third with eight ks. He did he ended up with. I think what four or five pitchers came after him. Yeah they had. They had different pitcher. Evan every inning after that. Yeah it was insane yeah force. You're really receive ago to but exactly because none of them carried earned run that whole stretch that last part of opening any of their any of their performances because the runner started on second Exactly right yeah. No i they have. They have to push the pictures a little bit more and part of the problem with why. We're not seeing as many hits. Everybody striking out all the time is because they're not pushing their relievers. There's i don't like you're such thing as a long reliever anymore. No which is released guys. Only two which is strange to me though because the pictures are going a shorter time. Yup you know like if you have a pitcher who only goes to two thirds like. It's not really that big of a deal like well. I guess we just you know. Bring in our our middle relievers and they'll go to innings each instead of one. It won't be that big of a deal if you're forced to you mean if your starter goes yeah a third. Yeah yeah yeah. I say started goes to two hundred ten two thirds on like that. And then you're not really stretching your relievers by by bringing them in at that point in the game if they're capable of the long relief game. Well that's what i'm saying like. They can go. They can go six out. Yeah and that's not really long. Hopefully i don't think boston go six outs right now relief. I don't think so either that that comes down to circumstance and who you got. Yeah you know there. There are times. I don't think that there are guys in the mariners. Bullpen can go three three at bats. Three outs oh yeah right. Yeah like i feel like bullpens are down right now like there are really really good ones like the race. Have a really good one. Dodgers have a really good one but like overall across the league like relievers have become so nomadic because teams are just like.

"Okay. But anyway we're atop the ale east is point and we wanted to congratulate all those baltimore orioles fans out there and we hope that persist for at least seventy two hours. We don't know what will happen. We're excited for you. Were excited with you dilly dilly. That's exactly right. They will be better than boston this year. Let's be completely honest. it's true. I i don't i don't see the red sox finishing anywhere above last heck they might break. They might have the first pick in the draft next year. They they actually okay okay so on opening day we also had some craziness with our least favorite part of baseball culture. The long ball. But we're going to go out and talk about it anyway because everybody loves the long ball so the we have three opening day. Walk off games right brad. We had the mcgrew mariners and phillies all walked off their opening day. Gains is pretty cool. It was cool. Because i mean as a mariners fan. Obviously i've stand up watching the game and with the bases loaded. And my least favourite mariner jake freely at the plate and double plans games. They're going to go an extra innings. I know it's going to happen. But he drew a walk. I felt like i was watching a little big league. Forget the homer. Just trying to get hit by the pitch. He drew lock. He drew a walk mariners so happy. Yeah walk off. Walk is always a bases loaded. Walk off base. i'll take. I'll take a walk over a back off the hub. There is nothing in my opinion absolutely worse than off. Now there's so much confusion and everybody's yelling and this the base on balls you're like yeah basis loaded. You're right well. We suck a little bit right now. So but here's the thing about these walk-offs so so the phillies and the mariners. Actually all three of these games on did all three of those go extra innings Yeah i don't. I don't think feel adelphia. Go in extras no philly. One in the bottom of the ninth. But the brewers the mariners and actually yeah because the mariners wanted ten so gave the runner who started the inning on second base ended up being the runner who scored an end of the game. The same thing happened with the blue jays in the yankees right on opening opening day. Yes sir yeah so like with the way that. I can't remember who is pitching for the giants at night. The way he was pitching like he wasn't getting out of that any there was no way the mariners. We're gonna win that game. Because he was wild you'd walk the bases loaded. There was no way he's getting out of that any But as far as the yankees and the blue jays go. If i remember right like if they had had a runner on second. I don't think that things would have gone necessarily the same way. No i agree because what ended up happening is the runner on second scored on just a pretty routine double Yeah that's right. He kinda jogged into home right. Yeah even i mean. I don't wanna say was effortless but it was. It.

The baseball players are taking such exception to mild quote unquote disrespect. We're gonna call it because you know to some degree it is but that's sports your trash talking. You have to draw the line between like okay. This stays on the field because cost even said after he said yati molina could punched me in the face and i still would ask super assigned jersey after the. That's you know he's not gonna lose any respect for him he doesn't like he doesn't lose respect for anybody on the field with all that trash talk. It's just part of the game you have to have the ego or you'll get eaten alive in baseball and any sport really especially at the professional level. Yes absolutely and the fact that so many of these guys can't put that ego forward and just brush it off like all right next time we'll strike them out. that's issue. i have with this whole thing. I understand sticking up for your guy but you don't need to go after him. No you know well. Who's going after whom here. "The shocking story of arson investigator John Leonard or began back in Nineteen eighty-four a fire in Pasadena California hardware. The store killed four people including a two year old child arson. She's One of our most avid listeners. So we always like to hear from her okay so we have a California beer. I've never picked on. I'm from this brewery before I can't imagine my favorite brewers have haven't chosen anyway. This is from Sierra Nevada brewing company. It celebration fresh fresh hop. I P A Sierra Nevada brewing is in Chico California celebrations in American Ip with a six point eight percent Ab Victor. Nice beer are Jamba colour. Little Bit ahead some pretty lace kind of a spicy aroma. peppery aroma. Some sweet mall little bit of hops. And that's exactly how it tastes. He started out with the CARAMEL. Little Spicy peppery Steph and then hops at the end and it's a nice beer. It's not terribly happy. Not One of those hot bombs that are GONNA kill you. I think you to enjoy it all right. Well let's open it up okay so I was really surprised. This is your first Sierra Nevada. Ah Let's take it down to the quiet end. I don't know how I've missed Sierra Nevada. Anyway I had a ton of Beers from that company so if we have other California cases you'll probably more of them great so until the case this is a just a fascinating case to me. It really yes yes. Yeah so by John. Moore's own description. His childhood growing up in the nineteen fifties was a happy one. He lived in a two bedroom middle-class home home behind his grandparents house. He had two older brothers who moved away when John was a teenager. Went to join the navy and the other start his own family Alan China's sixteen his mother left him and his father alone with no explanation. She just took off one day. She called after few days but John didn't see her again for three years and she had moved back to her hometown of Missouri and she never did reconcile John's father. That's kind of a strange thing to happen when you're a teen share I'm sure it was pretty weird and a little disheartening for him. Definitely one Sunday. She's there the next day she's not and no real explanation. Though in nineteen sixty seven John. Join the airforce. After he completed basic training training he was in jet mechanics training then he transferred to firefighting school. He had wanted to be a firefighter for some time. So he's happy to learn. Learn how to operate the equipment as he put out training fires yet. He married his high school girlfriend. Jodi in nineteen sixty eight and they were shipped off to an air air force base in Spain which was near Commercial Airport and they were there for two years but John was kind of bored. He only got to respond to to air-crashes during that time and he really wanted to be more in on the action. When John was transferred to great falls Montana he fought only one fire then when he he was twenty two he was honorably discharged at this time? Jodi was pregnant with their first child. John was insecure and he came across as a bit of a Bragar in order to compensate for this he really wanted to become a policeman or a firefighter. The Los Angeles Police Department invited him to test for position mission and he passed the written tests the medical exam and the fitness test but he failed the psychological test. He was sent a letter telling him that he he was unsuitable. So this was a big thing for him. He had wanted to be a policeman very badly. Your that was his main goal to be a cop. Yeah so this'll be pointed back to. As a really huge disappointment mitch merely might have had an effect on who he became as a man or your. I think you could look at it. That we could also look at it as there is something in his psychological makeup that made him on high rable. Oh sure yeah I think it went both ways after getting past feeling hurt. He was very angry. The rejection letter suggested that he consult another psychologist so so he hired one that he found in the yellow pages. This psychologist didn't evaluation and found him suitable but remember. This is the person he was paying but now he had a second opinion so he took that back to the LAPD psychologist for an appeal of that decision. You know the LAPD psychologist couldn't couldn't tell John Anything specific about why he had been rejected other than the say that he might have been too passive. Police officers needed to be assertive but then the psychologist left John Alone in his office with the file. He said I'm going to go out and get a cup of coffee. I think he kind of intentionally left the father so John read the file and so that one of his co workers had been interviewed and told the psychologist that John was laid to work lazy and resentful eventful of another man being promoted over him so I can't see any other way that this happened. Then the psychologist was really giving him an opportunity to look at his file. Were were absolutely the final evaluation stated that John Needed a few years to mature. And then maybe he could reapply to the force now. John Though would never admit to seeing his diagnosis in that file but he had actually been diagnosed with a personality trait disturbance and emotionally unstable personality. His former supervisors had described him as both irresponsible and immature as well. So this time John was working for Sparkletts marklets bottled water company. He quit that job and entered the management program at a fast food restaurant. It was nineteen seventy three and John was going going from one fast food job to another before he quit and he applied next to the Los Angeles Fire Department. He was couldn't be a policeman. He can be a fireman. Yeah I think it was as backup plan. And he was really thrilled when he was accepted to the academy for training but it turns out he was out of shape and he wasn't up to the rigors of the academy physically. He was told that he'd also done poorly on the written test so he was just given the option to resign or he. It's going to be fired so he was very angry and upset when this happened. Yeah and part of his problem was probably his attitude his after all had been a firefighter for four years in air force so he felt like he didn't need to study your practice now his time in the air force vote. He's half a couple fires Chris couple crashes and he. It didn't have much training. But he thought he did. So he didn't participate in study sessions with other recruits and he hadn't practice handling the heavy ladders and equipment and they were heavy. These big wooden ladders. He apparently in the service they had the light aluminum ladders. So this was a whole all different ballgame per handed so after that failure John was absolutely despondent and by this time he had two young daughters and his marriage was on the rocks. That's when he applied to the Glendale Fire Department and they accepted him in their fire academy in the spring of seventy four. He completed eight weeks of training and he graduated with twelve other guys. He was starting his career as a firefighter and he was super happy about it. Even though the Pay Glendale was a lot at less than it would have been at the L. A. P. D. or the L. A. F. D. wasn't it Glendale lowest paying in the state or something like that at the the time it was. Yeah maybe that's why I got hired. Nobody wanted to work for them. I'm sure that was part of it. Because he really wasn't. The top of the picks no her psychological report from earlier says a lot doesn't it it really does and also at home things weren't improving. He was really bored on his days off so he ended up taking a part time job at a seven eleven as a clerk then he bought himself pickup truck and went on camping and in hunting trips on his own without his family he ended up befriending a woman at the seven eleven and other employees who is also unhappy in her marriage and the two of them decided to be roommates leave their spouses and apparently this was Not a sexual thing at all it was just a friendship allegedly anyway yes so. John left his wife Jodi leaving her just note as an explanation for what is doing a lot like what his mother did. He pay child support and he also began taking classes in fire science in police science. John believed that. The police didn't show enough respect for firefighters fighters and he examined the conflicts between the two groups and a writing assignment is still working at the seven eleven and he used what he was learning to help him spot shoplifters in the store yeah he got really into that his boss at the seven eleven was impressed at how good he got at catching shoplifters John would would watch kids who came into the store after school and he catch them making them empty their pockets and return things so this was a big thing for John. I mean to the point of weirdness really yeah very weird when example in nineteen seventy six. While he was out shopping he saw men running toward a car with his arms full of suits from Montgomery wards store so John or chased. The man knocked him down and helped the store security guard hold the man until the police arrived yet. He and he was clearly thrilled with this moment. He talked to the security guards and he actually asked them if he could get a part time job working in mall security but the mall said they only hired off-duty policeman and not firefighters. So there's another bruise to his ego. That's right he's already been told his second class this anyway. Because he's a Fire Department Dinata Police Department guy. Yeah and I don't know if that's really a thing but he definitely saw that way. He saw a lot of things in a slightly slightly off center. Way That's true he did. He wasn't quite right. We know that so. John was disappointed that he couldn't get a mall. Security John but that didn't deter them from doing other good deeds the same day. He saw an older man. Shoplifting hand tools. He told the cashier got the man arrested. So he asked at the sears store about getting a part time job with security

"This is scientific American sixty seconds science. I'm Christopher Dodd Yata. Tracking wildlife is a tough job. Take the case of a one eared leopard named Pavarotti for this guy. A very very big beautiful mail and you had a very very deep deep roar and so the end after Roy Kassim Rafique a wildlife biologist at Liverpool John Moores University so you see the crack of dawn and I would find his tracks. He wasted several. Several hours getting it out and then on the way back to camp he bumped into some local tour guides in their safari guests who'd had way better luck spotting Pavarotti and basically they laughed and they told me that morning Rafique then realized that tourist wildlife sightings might be. UNTAPPED source of information about wild animals so he and his team worked with a Safari Lodge in Botswana to analyze twenty five thousand tourists photographs of wildlife. They use those as sightings of lions spotted Hyenas Leopards Cheetahs and wild dogs. Dogs they then compared those data to the estimates they made with traditional wildlife biology tactics stuff like camera traps and track surveys and Colin stations where they play sounds of distrust animals in the middle of the night and see who pops by it turned turned out that the estimates from tourist photos were just as good as those gleaned from traditional methods and the tourists were actually the only ones to see elusive cheetahs. The researchers would have missed the cats without the citizen science data. The results are in the journal current biology.

U.S. Opens Trade Talks With China

"The world's two biggest economies are trying to resolve a trade war that has rattled nerves and markets on both sides of the Pacific, the US and China began a new round of trade talks today here in Washington negotiators have just over a month to make a deal or run the risk of more tariffs and pure, Scott Horsely reports. Photographers got a quick peek this morning as the high level talks got underway in the diplomatic reception room next door to the White House. US Trade Representative Robert lighthizer staff on one side of the polished conference table directly across from China's Vice Premier Li hook President Trump often complains about America's trade deficit with China, which has only grown in the last two years White House economic adviser. Larry cudlow says one goal of these talks is a bigger opening for US exports. Give our people that that chance to sell the China. We will export at ton. Our export sales will roar. Roar. China has already signaled a willingness to buy more American goods such as soybeans and natural gas, but US negotiators are also looking for more structural reforms, including an end to China's intellectual property theft and the force transfer of American technology on Monday, the Justice department unsealed an indictment against the Chinese telecom giant. Wow way accusing. In that company of trying to steal trade secrets from an American firm t mobile while the administration says that criminal case is not related to these trade talks. It does illustrate a long standing US complaint about the way. China does business. The playbook is simple, rob replicate. And replace John Moore's heads the Justice Department's national security division at a Senate hearing last month. He described deliberate Chinese strategy of economic espionage. Rob the American company of its intellectual property replicate that technology and replace the American company in the Chinese market and one day in the global market. Syracuse economist Mary lovely who's a former editor of the China economic review says Beijing has taken some steps to address the US concerns in recent months. China has increased penalties for stealing intellectual property, and it's move to outlaw the forced transfer of technology. I don't know. But the Chinese have certainly signaled it. They're willing to make structural reforms. China has a history, however of backsliding on such promises. So US officials say whatever is agreed to we'll have to be enforceable commerce secretary Wilbur Ross told CNBC both countries want to make a deal, but he doesn't expect any quick breakthroughs where miles and miles from getting a resolution, and frankly that shouldn't be too surprising. Still lovely some encouraging signals including the presence of a high ranking Chinese delegation here in Washington and the plan meeting tomorrow between Vice Premier Li you and President Trump. Signs that the parties believe that some type of deal could be done the alternative could be costly unless there's a deal or at least an agreement to keep talking by the beginning of March. The administration has threatened to increase tariffs on some two hundred billion dollars worth of Chinese imports from ten to twenty five percent lovely says that wouldn't be good for anyone battle. I think has been fairly mindless a lot of the tariff revenues coming out of American consumers pockets the administration says China is under pressure to make a deal because of its slowing economy. But American companies have also felt the pain of China's slowdown and that could create pressure on US negotiators as well. Scott Horsely NPR news, the White House.
