CBS's Steve burns looked into this and he is joining us so Steve why are we seeing a decrease in donations there are a few reasons here guys first of all is one we can probably all understand people are just more apprehensive about going out and and doing medical related things The New York flood center told me they are seeing a lot of self deferrals that means their regular donors are postponing their donations and the other big thing they're seeing or their mobile blood drives getting cancelled these are hosted and you know schools religious institutions office buildings and a lot of these places are taking fewer chances on who they bring in while we deal with corona virus so so so far now the blood center told me they're seeing kind of the beginnings of a decrease in they wanna put fears to rest before the snowballs into a bigger problem in sh possibly a shortage what's the blood center saying to help reassure people yeah they're kind of just did saying the process is safe that the the volunteers are trained just just kind of redoubling their efforts here that it's a clean environment essentially kind of begging and pleading these donors and these drive host to stay the course you know keep their appointments there's no evidence that corona virus can be spread through blood but either way all the usual guidelines around donors still apply that people aren't eligible to donate if they have a cold a sore throat flu like symptoms other also occur urging people not to donate if they've recently traveled to a country experiencing a big corona virus outbreak or if they've been in contact with anyone who might have it see how bad is the shortage how important are these donations for hospitals and for patients yeah the shortage so far isn't too bad but they they said they are seeing kind of the beginnings of a problem here and they definitely want to put a stop to it because when you think about blood donations what I was told it was put to me was that if we run out of blood it puts us all at even greater risk these blood donations are often literal lifesavers for people and it's an even bigger concern because only about five percent of the eligible donor population you're actually donates so if they start having some second thoughts it's not always easy to find new donors and that's when you might start seeing a shortage thank you Steve W.
