"A Rolling Stone while John meacham was in the morning Joe John meech and is a complete joke. So called historian. And he was one of the so called historians who met early on with Joe Biden and told him to go big and go fast. He could be bigger than FDR. Just destroy the country faster and more thoroughly. He didn't say that. I'm saying that he said that. Now he's very concerned, John meacham, he used to write speeches for Biden, and then on this very same show, he used to praise Biden's speech. That's what kind of egomaniac you're dealing with there. Here he is. On the morning schmo show, not the morning schmo show does not get a big audience. But it is pushed hard by the left. Because again, you have a repub in or a former Republican and Joe. Scarborough. Who trashes what are his own people in his own party? Go ahead, cut 12. If the Republican Party and I'm not a Republican, I'm not a Democrat, but insofar as a historical matter. We need two functioning parties that have an allegiance to the constitution. That's the central question. For anyone who wants to be president on the Republican side, is are you going to try to treat the unconstitutional nature of trumpism as a okay, okay. What unconstitutional nature of trumpism, this is a rambling buffoon. He's basically a show animal. He knows where he is. And he's performing. What about Joe Biden's zero unconstitutional acts? What about it? On the border and not enforcing the law, acting like a dictator when it comes to student loans and what about this equity stuff. What about all this historian should be smart enough to know? But he doesn't discuss that. Instead, it's the unconstitutional nature, and you see it's the Republican Party that has to make sure that both parties are viable. The Republican Party, the Democrat party, is trying to destroy the Republican Party as an institution if it doesn't destroy itself first. That's what's happening. Once to destroy it by changing the voting system, wants to destroy it by packing the court wants to destroy it by adding senators to the Senate from Democrat states. Once to destroy it by investigating its members, wants to destroy the Republican state legislatures and I can go on and on and on. But John meech, who doesn't see it that way. Have you noticed? Not only is there a war on Trump, there's a war on desantis. The attacks on the santas are mounting. And now there's a tax on Nikki Haley. Nikki Haley is sort of a right of center Republican. I would argue, right of center, and a more traditional, and she's attacked for her race. She's attacked for her womanhood

I'm Kai riz doll just about two months after hurricane Ian tore into southwest Florida thousands of people down there are still living in shelters in fema sponsored hotels or crashing with friends and family. And as marketplace as Mitchell Hartman reports in an area that was already suffering from an affordable housing crisis, the storm made matters much, much worse. East Fort Myers is a predominantly African American and Latino working class neighborhood on the outskirts of downtown. About a month ago, with cleanup from hurricane Ian well underway, I jumped in the car for a quick tour. So you see how close we are to the river at the colusa hatchie river. Abdul haq Muhammad directs a local community organization called the quality life center. Muhammad points to one side of the street, modest single-family wood frame and mobile homes, then he points to the other side, modern upscale homes and condos, some with waterfront views. Bought by corporations out of town corporations often. And they're renovated and then put back out on the market at a level that is unaffordable for people in that community. There's obvious damage to homes on both sides of the street, but it's the renters and mobile homeowners, Muhammad is most worried about, because many of them aren't insured, and they have some serious rebuilding to do. You look down these blocks, you will see not only debris, but also how so furniture that debris in some areas is about as tall as the houses. All of their drywall, carpeting all their cabinets, beds, Gladys cook has been assessing damage for the Florida housing coalition. So you know that that house flooded and those people can't live in the home and there's thousands of people in that situation. Displaced storm victims face a big challenge, trying to find a new place to live while they're living in temporary shelters or motels or couch surfing with friends and family. We were already a million units short of affordable housing in Florida before the disaster. And then when you take out are those mobile homes, you really looking at a long-term problem. So displaced people are finding their own housing solutions. Melanie long had to leave the duplex where she was renting after it flooded in the storm. Several weeks ago, she attended a fema information session to find out about assistance programs. It's really hard to lose like 90 percent of everything you ever own. I mean, it just gone. And then you think you can go to work for some peace, but you can't because you lost 90 percent of your stuff at work. Long's grateful she has a job, she works for the Fort Myers redevelopment agency. She moved in with a friend while she was searching for a new place to rent. So I looked everywhere in Fort Myers, there was nothing available. And so I looked for a place outside the city. And the waiting lists are long, and there's like, you know, a thousand people want to rent there. Okay, you have an issue of a hurricane here, but prior to the hurricane, this momentum was already in motion. Community organizer Abdul haq Muhammad says property values of sword in desirable coastal areas like Fort Myers as developers and wealthy home buyers flock here. But he says the area also needs service workers, and nearby affordable housing for them. What's it getting instead? People's rents are constantly going up. It's going to push people out. Where can they go though? Further inland, which now pushes them further away from employment opportunities. That's Melanie long story. She found a new rental, but it's not in Fort Myers and

For many people, it's not easy to open up to someone and discuss our vulnerabilities. But not long ago, I found myself in a place where I needed someone to talk to. I'm a relatively new father with two very young children in the home, and although I always wanted kids, I waited because I was wanting to be a stable as possible in my life, both mentally and financially. What I learned is never the right time because life doesn't work that way. And the pressure I felt and feel wanting to be the father I never had is a heavy weight at times to bear. Compound that with the career and lifestyle that goes with my career, I find myself in dual worlds that often don't mesh. "Divinely ordained. Well, that's part of this speech too. He acknowledges that both sides believed that God was on their side, but I believe he also suggests they may be both wrong. He says, both brave is saying God both ask for victory over the other, the prayers of neither have been fully answered. What is perennially frightening is that in American politics in American culture, people do claim divine sanction for what they want to do. And if you claim divine sanction for what you want to do, that makes compromise very difficult. If you believe you are doing God's work, unless you do it with an immense amount of humility, that becomes a stumbling block within a democratic context in a way that is very, very troubling. At the same time, religion has been one of the great forces for reform and liberty in the country. My view of this, which I think is also the way Lincoln articulated was that religion is going to be part of the human experience. In the same way economics are always a part or geography. And so the question is how do you manage and marshal religious feeling? Not try to remove it. There is a conscience, and you want to do everything you can to be in accord with this universal law of treating others as you would be treated. And that may sound simplistic, but I firmly believe and I argue in this that that was Lincoln's moral vision. And it's also, it has the virtue of being a durable political vision. John, I want to anticipate a question I think you're going to get a lot. You're going to go out, you're going to do public events, you're going to do interviews in our current political environment. You've got this book that dwells in the Civil War. I think people are going to ask you, do you think we're heading for a Civil War? Tragically, I think we will see more of civil chaos. I think we're going to see it with violence. I do not believe we're going to see the massing of great armies in the way we did in the 19th century. But we are at greater risk and part of it is that there is a passionate minority that is putting its own interests ahead of those of the nation and the nation as defined with that kind of moral sensibility. We've discussed, but I'm fundamentally hopeful in this sense. That we have stared into the abyss before. And just enough of us have decided to do the right thing. And as Lincoln said about our better angels, those better angels won't prevail unless we enlist ourselves in the cause. "Of the advancements for our people came by way of legislature. And the year after I graduated from law school, I was running for office. I was running for city council, but by that time I was radicalized. And I was speaking like a Black Panther more so than I was speaking like a politician. People didn't vote for me. They voted for the person who gave them free turkeys and left them to suffer. You know what I mean? So it was a journey that changed my life forever was December 3rd. I think it was 20 14. Yes, the cemetery 2014. It was I would never forget I was hanging out with a friend and I told her, yo, they let this cop go. They kill Eric Garner. I'm taking to the streets. And I tell you, I march for 30 days straight. We would just shutting down traffic shutting down New York City for 30 days straight. That was followed by a Marshall Washington D.C. and I've been in these streets ever since. You know, I graduated from law school. I never practiced law damn my life. I took the bar exam a couple of times early, but it's just not who I'm supposed to be right now. I'm supposed to be out here fighting for liberation of black people. And not sitting in some office practice a lot. With your training in that area. And what ways do you use that in the work that you do, despite not officially practicing law in office? The funny thing is having a law degree gives me the ability to know what I am talking about when I'm making demands on legislation when I make a demands on these police officers to have them charge appropriately a great story is schizophrenic 66 black woman who was shot to death in her house. Four out of the 5 officers in that apartment said that they would not have shot this woman in this one sergeant shoe Barry shot her. The Bronx district attorney refused to fight, well, first we went to the attorney general's office because we knew through legislation the attorney general's office had the ability to prosecute this car. The attorney general didn't want to fumble this and lose the black vote. So he punted it to the broth district attorney. We stood outside in front of her office for three months in the winter in New York. We're talking about 8, 9, some days it was below zero, but we sat there and we said the same things. We want him charged with murder. We want him to charge with manslaughter and really read the elements of the law. And after we pressured them, they indicted this cop and that the press conference, the prosecutor used the same language that I was using outside in front of that courthouse in front of the office. My ability to argue allows me to demolish white supremacists and their logic and my knowledge of the law gives me an insight into how to properly make demands on this system when we were fighting for things. Hitting the World Trade Center. All we saw was that one explosion. Hi, I'm John meacham. Join me in C 13 originals for our new podcast. Available for free now wherever you listen to your podcasts. Currently, what type of demands are you in the organization to make? There is one piece of legislation that we are dead set on. Just to preface this and the last 6 years, we passed 7 pieces of legislation. Well, right? Yeah, and that's us directly. And we don't lobby, we don't go up to Albany, our state's capital and bank people to do the right thing. We play a pressure game. We negotiate with these politicians and lawmakers and we get our things fast. The thing that we're really focused on now is called the blue wall Bill. Many of you are familiar with the blue wall of silence. It's like the police's no snitch code. They don't tell on each other. They don't arrest each other. Police officers and law enforcement in general are more efficient than the mafia or than any street drive, you will find they do not snitch on each other. And when they do snitch on each other, they are punished, right? So we're proposing as a piece of legislation that says, if you lie on a report, if you falsify this government document, you will be facing a felony. That means if the officers who are around when George Floyd was choked to death, falsified the police report and said, George Floyd was doing some obviously was not doing. They'd be looking at another charge, which is that felony that we're proposing. That's something that is really important to us. We have a whole list of legislative agenda. But I'll be perfectly honest with you. We are more focused on right now going into our communities and teaching our people with this oppression is teaching our people how to eat, teaching them how to meditate and do yoga, teaching them about financial literacy. So we've been very much top down, you know? And we did a little bit of the old boots on the groundwork, but we're switching that dynamic to where we're focusing most of our attention on being in the community and helping our people. We think that that's the most effective way to get liberation for our people. Let's dig more into that. It seems that you're describing a transition in terms of focusing on the needs of the community more so than legislative aspects. Talk more about what that looks like on an ongoing basis to engage in community. And what are the outcomes that you are hoping to see from those efforts in the community? Well, the name of our new organization, which was founded a month after the death of George Floyd, is black opportunities. AKA the black ops with black ops, our team can build a national organization that is real authentic and true to our people. We look at the violence that is plaguing our community. And we understand that the true cause of crime is poverty that the police in the government are not going to stop the violence in our community. So the late situations and we're encouraging people to walk through their communities and spread love to the young boys, you know what I'm saying to.

"Gift I'm just gonna put it out there It is just great conversation Yeah features conversations with Madeleine Albright Ken burns he mentioned John meacham Walter isaacson the list goes on All right so great to catch up with David on so much Right now we want to catch up with our down a hall who follows Tesla for us because shares of Tesla bouncing around today We've seen them down about 2% at their lows and we've seen them up maybe fractionally at its highs She is technology reporter at Bloomberg news She writes today on how Elon Musk signaling that the company is quote all grown up She joins us from our San Francisco We are down a good to have you here Tell us about your story and what it means for Tesla to be kind of all grown up here I mean I think what's interesting to me is that Tesla Elon Musk has always balanced his roles at Tesla and SpaceX and for the first time this week we kind of saw him say that he's focusing more on SpaceX which is kind of which is kind of new I mean he's always bounced back and forth between the two but at The Wall Street Journal conference earlier this week he said that SpaceX and in particular it's starship rocket takes up most of his mental energy these days And so it's kind of like the script has been flipped a little bit Tesla has a $1 trillion valuation seems to be going really well Electric vehicle demand is high like everything is kind of firing all cylinders and SpaceX is where he's like sleeping on the factory line and worried about these raptor engines and sending out these all hands on deck emails So it kind of reminds me a little bit of Tesla in 2018 Well Dan I don't want to draw too many parallels here but it also reminds me of Jeff Bezos and what he did with Blue Origin and his comments when he was still CEO of Amazon about how he was starting to spend more time working on Blue Origin Of course bluer is in a very different company than SpaceX at a very different point when it comes to what it's doing with reusable rockets and how far it's able to get and who it's able to carry to certain heights But does it mean that Elon Musk could perhaps be stepping away from this being CEO despite the fact that he calls it kind of a meaningless title Well I think you're starting to see him relinquish some control which is a big thing for him I mean he is by all means a very hands on executive but for example for the first time in a decade he wasn't on Tesla's last earnings call He let the CFO Zachary corcoran lead the call for the first time But then he also said that he would be back in January to be on the call again So he's not totally stepping away but just the fact that he allowed another executive to lead the call was kind of a big sign I think it's like he's 50 he's running two companies both companies have accomplished an enormous amount where he spends his time is usually indicative of where he feels his energy needs to be And at the moment it's really focused more on SpaceX Now that said it's not like the pendulum is totally swung and I think he's gonna step down a CEO tomorrow or anything like that But I think it's just a sign that Tesla's in a good place He goes where his energy is needed and he's spending most of his time now in Texas on the SpaceX stuff You know it's so funny Dan I feel like it's just like how things are with the pandemic creating a vaccine It's all rolling out in front of us I feel like that's what we get from Elon Musk If he's having a bad day or a good day or feeling a certain way like we just know right He just lays it out Yeah And I mean so do we have to be careful not to read too much into it but he's just saying this is a little tricky right now Yeah I mean I think what people admire about Elon is he's very candid I mean he's probably the most candid CEO around And some people might say that that's orchestrated are all like a marketing ploy but when he's angry he lets you know he'll and when he's when he's worried about something he makes it pretty clear what he's focused on and what he said about starship was like you know sometimes I question whether we should be trying to do this at all And so I think that that's refreshing to people I mean no one Scripps his comments He just sort of speaks off the cuff all the time but I think he is fairly honest about what he's worried about And so it's just interesting I mean the space reporters who cover SpaceX are like oh my God SpaceX has been crazy I mean to me the fact that we got a leaked email out of SpaceX saying all hands on deck I know it's the Thanksgiving weekend but I'm gonna be on the raptor line and you should come to I mean we just haven't seen an email like that for a while particularly from SpaceX Yeah that's like the kind of email that we saw 5 years ago from Tesla Dana Right Right It was like deja vu but different company Exactly Hey take us into what is going on at SpaceX right now And I know you cover certainly cover Tesla more closely but what is SpaceX working on that's so challenging Yeah so they have kind of two big projects They are trying to build out a satellite network that they call Starlink And they have about a 140,000 customers globally but they need to get more satellites up in space in order to build out the network At the same time they're working on this next generation vehicle called starship which uses a new engine called the raptor engine And they're apparently our problems with the raptor engine production line So that's kind of like front and center And then at the same time they're waiting for the FAA to give them approval to kind of expand their whole place in Boca chica and there are a lot of environmental concerns So there's sort of waiting for some regulatory approval there But SpaceX is doing well It's just that Elon is very anxious to get these next projects going He wants to fly starship and the next year and they need to fix these raptor issues Well that's what I was thinking I'm like when we look at the space industry we think SpaceX is actually doing well right He's getting the government contracts It provides some clarity down about the companies certainly financials going forward I mean you know you talk about the projects he's working out What is his longer term vision for this company Well it's always been to make life multiplanetary and to colonize Mars And so yeah SpaceX SpaceX is doing fine They're falcon 9 rocket is a workhorse They've got this incredible contract with NASA I mean Boeing hasn't flown astronauts at all SpaceX is regularly fairing astronauts to the space station But long term Musk really wants to go to Mars and this rockets starship is key to that How key is the idea of Tesla's new headquarters actually being in Texas where SpaceX is and where he spends more time in Austin Should we read into anything about hate to use the word synergies but the idea that geographically they're closer Hey man I think it's easier for him So Musk mood moved to Texas himself because his companies are sort of working on two big projects Tesla is building this massive factory in Austin SpaceX is working on starship I mean he was constantly flying back and forth between Brownsville Austin and LA Now he's just mostly in Texas which I think is much easier for him personally And there are synergies between the company I mean.
