"A win in November Roberts agreeing to re argue the case. And then missed all leaves this out Mitch McConnell, not putting a justice on the recession. anyways. I mean those missile says if I had wheels that'd be a wagon this thing is screwed. and. What is crazy about the affordable care act? Is You go? Well, I mean the Democrats should campaign on this. Yes. Yeah. But about that. This is an interesting sticky wicket with the affordable care act. If you got on Google right now I feel fairly confident. The first thing needs to locate on Google is well the affordable care act just we'll get better. Yeah Okay let's get into those numbers though because this is where it's important. The Democratic Party's strategy especially this time around in running with Biden in having a hug favorite Republican fest at the Democratic National Convention and talking about how Joe Biden loves. John McCain Republican Republican Republican. Lincoln. Project. Republican. The idea is we're going to appeal to independence and moderates we WANNA bring him home we want to bring him back into the tent. Well. Prior to the Republicans, the affordable care act when it was under the defense of the Democrats in the passage of the Democrats polling, very poorly among independence in two thousand, thirteen, it was at fifty, two percent but by twenty fourteen, it was down to thirty, nine, percent twenty and fifteen, thirty, three, percent, two, thousand, sixteen, Forty, two, percent, twenty, seventeen, it was at forty percents it jumps up to fifty, six percent in the middle of twenty seventeen won the Republicans look like they are poised to repeal the affordable care act and it's fucking obvious to anyone who is watching that they have no god damn clue what they're going to replace the affordable care act with. Yeah at that point, the support among independence for the affordable care act jumps up to fifty six percent. They prefer the status quo to no affordable care act whatsoever. But even then now among independent, it offers at fifty percent forty, seven, percent, fifty, five percent. This year fifty three percent fifty, three percent. So yeah fifty three percents winning Sherp I agree..

"Mortgage o- on whistle blower, Wednesday with Brian Sussman and Katie green on talk radio five sixty K F O as got a lot of splaine into do. That's Joe Biden. So first of all, Trump is slamming Biden for the nineteen ninety four crime Bill which Joe Biden was all for. And there are a lot of positions that Biden took over the years that all these years later just look stupid, even the Democrats realize no. We'd never should have done that. But it's amazing how this whole immigration thing has evolved over the years, there was a time where Democrats were very reasonable when it came to immigration and believed in things like, well, if you're going to immigrate to this country, any English Ella. Hello. I've talking to this audience, this audience is so diverse, we have so many people listening from so many different places English is not your native tongue, but you quickly realized in order to get ahead in this country, get better. Learn how to speak English. I mean, if you want to really make it in the United States of America, speak, the language. What's also interesting. The English language heavy noticed, it's the international Goto language when you're flying a plane, guess what? Everyone communicates in English. This is the way the world operates, so you should probably get bored. If you really wanna make it get on board. I met so many people and again, so many people in this audience you came here, English was nuts your first language, and you really wanted to make it something that you were good at because you wanted to get head. I love it. When I see, so many people from China. First thing they do, when they come to America to give themselves an English name. Right. I see all these women at that the Safeway that I go to San Francisco, all of these Chinese women clearly, you know, not here for very long and they're all day, like, Susie Jenny, Tammy, Tammy rate smart. They're realizing, okay? I, I realized my given name is probably a little harder to pronounce. It's gonna look out on this name tag. I wanna get ahead. I wanna make it in this country. I'll let you make money and prosper do what you gotta do do what you gotta do. So there was a time when people thought speaking English was the way to go, including Joe Biden. I've got a clip for you here. It's not long. It's an interview MSNBC two thousand six Chris Matthews that Chris Matthews, of course, fairy liberal television firebrand commentator, Joe Biden was at the time a Senator and Joe Biden was supporting what was called the. Secure America and orderly immigration, secure, America and orderly Immigration Act. It was sponsored by Senator Ted Kennedy, super liberal, and John, McCain, Republican who was all over the map has a Republican. Sometimes he was liberal septem-. She was conservative, you could ever pin the guy down because he was the maverick anyway, would ask by Matthews. If there was a democrat party position, which accommodates the need to stop illegal entry. To make sure that it would punish people who hire people illegally and then give them cheap wages. It also deter people from coming to this country illegally. Joe Biden said, oh, yeah, this is the plan this what we want to do. And as you listen to this exchange you'll hear the voice of Chris Matthews. He's the first way she'll here, and it's, it's amazing. He sounds, this is two thousand six he sounds like he could be at Fox News and twenty nineteen as a conservative commentator. And Joe Biden says, like he could be a conservative Senator in twenty nineteen. Now, both of these guys Matthews and Joe Biden of since way reverse their positions. What they were once for, but take a listen to this. Can you an employer in this country whether agriculture worker, a housewife into not hiring illegal because the punishment so high that if you get caught? Yeah. It's a huge embarrassment to your family, and you may just hit hit with a fine. It'll kill you the absolutely. We should. Why think we should do you can't catch him? No, no. You can't. And the last part of this is that the democratic position also recognize you got eleven million Ailey illegal aliens here. They have to have a way to earn their way into the deal. This is an amnesty. They're required to take eleven years worth. They pay a fine. They gotta learn to speak English. They gotta pass testers part. Yeah. If we want the problems of Canada right now. Keep encouraging people to keep their foreign language English is going to unite this country English is going to unite this country. Chris Matthews two thousand six Joe Biden, agreeing. Cleese changed his tune has that amazing teen years. Wow, that the whole democrat party has completely flipped on this word. Just dump founding. And this is why I think they're gonna have so much trouble Joe by you gotta find situation after situation that he's going to have to go back to amend. And that is just one of them that is one of them. All right. It's we're gonna have our chief Steve Frank of it up and just a moment. Katie's got traffic mess out there that she's trying to.

"Decreased by twenty percent of the world's unicorns which future job creators, etc. Are start up and being is a naming in terms of it in it's primarily in six geographies where ninety percent of the US venture capital goes into. So how do we change that as a country is very doable. Now to your second question, always loved taking on big companies and with my startups when I select which wants to do and I get the pick of the litter, you could argue, I deserve that or not, but the venture capitalist uses eight years a portfolio, John, you knew how to skill companies. You gotta help them operations. You know how to develop CEO's. Give you very favorable terms. So I do get the pick, but my goal is for each one of them to be number one in their segment of the industry, they go after and I've never worried about taking on the giants union at Cisco. We took on companies like Intel like IBM and the initial days we took on the Nortel's loosens the Alcatel's and what happens is companies get bigger, they get slower. They often get crossway with government. They forget that you must give back is will take in terms of profitability, etc. So I actually think companies are more challenged now in terms of his tech for gooders tech for bad in this country. Never before and segment of it might be that it stifles segments of startups. I've actually found the reverse. Most of the innovation is coming out of startups today when you have a spark cognition partnering with a Boeing Boeing's very innovative company, but they're doing a fifty fifty joint venture on the next generation unmanned aircraft and how you do the systems to maintain this a company with two hundred people. Down in Texas, or there's another company in New York, basically artificial intelligence and all of a sudden, the biggest companies in the US are working with that company on how they transform their business. They went from a million four run rate last year to over seventy million this year. So I would actually argue that startups will be where most innovation happens and that as long as there's a level playing field they can do well. Now, to your point, maybe venture capital was shy away from an investing in area that might be to direct with an Amazon or to direct with Facebook, etc. But about the time that large players think they're invulnerable, they are very vulnerable. All right on that. No, we're going to come back in a minute. We're talking with John Chambers. He's the former CEO and chairman assists go. And now he's has a new book out called connecting the dots leadership lessons in a startup world. Support for this podcast and the following message comes from smart water, not satisfied being like other brands. Smart water looked up at the clouds and said, I wonder if we can one up mother nature for a pure crisper water and guess what they did. This is the kind of water that regular water gets jealous of. It's the water that refreshes like no other brand, try it. Smart water vapor distilled for purity, electrolytes for taste. We're here with John chamber. He's the former CEO and chairman of Cisco where it was forever right? John forever. Why would we did this together? He's the author of connecting the dots leadership lessons at a start where we're talking about where startups are now. So talk about the things and then I want to get to your leadership lessons. Sure. What can the government do right now assess this government right now or the past two administrations will. This one doesn't have almost any interest in that from what I can tell will this very provocative question and answer very square. I know you're curious what kind of Republican. Okay. Let me go in reverse order. I support as many Democrats do Republican. Okay. One of the few Republicans in Silicon Valley at the time you brought, we're talking about John McCain, and again, I'm so John McCain was one of my friends in life. You much. Much on this seem so much and you're kind of John McCain Republican, you're saying, but also understanding. I think the definition Republicans and Democrats as re blurred. So I don't think there's much confusion amongst our listeners as to what my perspective is on John McCain. I don't. While I was going to say, I don't wish death on anyone, but that's that that it's not true. I did not feel strongly about John McCain's situation, one way or another. How can ally wasn't particularly happy about? It wasn't necessarily saddened about it. I have a policy that if I know someone from. Via their public life. That's the only thing I measure them against. And. I don't really care what John McCain was like as a man. I'm sure. People thought maybe in his life that he was a nice man. It's possible some didn't. I don't know. Do I think he's a war hero? Sure. There was also a lot of other guys who are in prison in Vietnam who we never talk about, and we don't pale mosh to when they pass away. Many of them have you've never heard their names. We certainly have never talked about it. So I don't care about that. Charlie Peters wrote a tweet. And I, I do actually like Charlie Pierce and I do care about him and. I like what he does publicly. But he had this to say, ama-, touch sick of the lefty hot takes by those by which those of us who were moved to a kind of optimism by the funeral Saturday have forgotten the crimes of the Bush administration, the crime that was Vietnam. I, I fortunately was out of touch enough that I don't know exactly what he's referring to and look. I have no problem with people watching event and getting up to mystic and this net, whatever. But here's, here's the part that I have an issue with when it comes to John McCain. So Charlie Pierce wrote houses on fire, don't care who brings a hose. I gotta say, I agree with that sentiment. The problem is John McCain did not bring hose, John McCain got dressed up in the Firemen's outfit, and he walked and he said, the house burning and I'm totally against it..

"Obama also represented a change in status a change in who held power in this country the democratic party coalition was changing and very very visible ways and that seems to me to be something that the democrats don't quite they're not quite comfortable talking about it and don't quite know what to do with so a lot there um welcomed by pocket other defector let me try to get to his as much of that is i can one i think the what we saw over the course of an abomination administration coming out of a great recession and the years after was an accelerated economic transformation rain and one that yes as you pointed to kind of the changing political consituencies therefore the parties that has accelerated over the course of the past couple of years in particularly through uh the 2016 election where those of us there were out there every day campaigning you could feel the plates underneath the foundations of the party's moving donald trump ran as a republican he is not a traditional republican he's not an romney republican he's on a john mccain republican he's done on a paul ryan republican that being said hannah democrat either so you could feel the bases in some of the parties starting to move and we've seen it i think this is a fair statement a a massive shift in some of the policies put forth by what a republican party platform is what republican stand for they were a year and a half ago a party deadset against the debt they have racked up a debt it almost unprecedented terms in the past six weeks up so they were free trading pro immigration they're they're not either of those anymore and so we're seeing a massive shift take place you're seeing that ships as well with the democratic party clearly but i think what the the consequence of what we have to recognize that his look clearly some of the the traditional democratic voters and i hear this an awful lot as you can probably imagine some of those folks that knows as walking through the capital this morning with a republican colleague from the south who said you know i was a huge meyer of your grandfather robert kennedy and i would read his speeches and say that's why i'm a democrat he's a republican member.

"King now here we are at the end of the show i wanna take a minute to talk about something that happened in the news recently that struck me and this week i saw that senator john mccain republican from arizona took to the floor the senate and one of the things that i like to highlight on the show week after week is examples of people who don't behave in a kneejerk way according to what their party wants and do things based on principle and on conscience rather than on partisan politics and john mccain were hero whose tortured and vietnam when he was captured took to the floor to oppose the nomination of donald trump's nominee to be the general council of the department of transportation style national security position but there was a debate about national security because the person who nominated was a man by the name of steven bradbury and steven bradbury in the bush administration between two thousand five and two thousand nine was head of an office in the justice department called the officer legal counsel in part of the job of the office of legal counsel some people have said it was to be the conscience of the department and while steven bradbury headed up that office in the justice department he authored what a lotta people refer to as the so called torture memos which gave a legal basis for all sorts of conduct by the cia intelligence community to engage in methods of torture quite frankly against suspected terrorists that i and many other people on both sides of the aisle thought when against the grain of what our country is about to john mccain not only went to the floor to vote against steven bradbury but he gave an impassioned speech i wanted to read a sense to you.

"So it feels almost lame to bring up the business question when we're talking about the the future of democracy basically but josh what kind of an impact with regulations have on revenues on profitability for these social networks yeah i think it really depends on how wide any future regulations go if there's something relatively targeted that says you have to tag political advertising on the websites i don't think that would really impact the business it probably wouldn't even really impact the business for political ads but once congress starts doing things like trying to regulate socalled organic speech on the site that could really impact the shape of a facebook in a way that might also shape its underlying business and and i think that's really what the companies want to avoid okay thank you josh thanks so because it's so hard to trace content has it moves across a huge platform like youtuber facebook it's also extremely difficult to regulate effectively but that hasn't stopped some senators firm proposing new rules right garrett of anc that's true highbrowed garrett us a year are new yorkbased reporter and you are at the hearings last week tell us about one proposed piece of legislation that came up the honest ads act you know this is a bill is put forward by mark warner whose name has come up in this conversation already as well as amy club which are another democratic senator and they actually got john mccain republican to sign on with them to support and what the honest answer act is what it tries to do is take the rules that already apply to radio and tv political advertisements and require online or digital ad to use those same rules.

"You mentioned you went to senator ben carton democrat and senator john mccain republican wanting to go to the white house well i am i discovered something very frustrating for me which was that at the time that i wanted to do this uh president obama wanted to do something called the reset with russia with that meant in practical terms was he basically wanted to allow russia to do whatever they wanted to do his long as serb general diplomatic relations improved and so i was being blocked the white house wanted nothing to do with us who was blocking you president obama basically thumb uh he he he didn't wanna do this this particular uh story shows how the us constitution checks and balances make it possible to to do things that should be done and so this is clearly a a situation where whenever the diplomatic objectives were of of of the administration this is just something that this was a good piece of legislation this was basically saying should russian torturers and murderers be allowed to come in to america and ninety two senators thought no they shouldn't do you think that a foreign policy expert but you seem to know a lot about american and russian relations do you think the reset on the part of the obama administration was an error as complete her so so ah ah and if an error if it's sort of uh an error of the pride of obama what happens in all these situations you get a new president they come in and they think i'm such a successful guy look i'm a president of the united states of america i can do anything i can convince vladimir putin to behave himself we thought this with george bush george bush goes in there and he looked into putin's eyes and ceases soul and then it didn't work out so well it he has won meeting where he saw a soul the next twenty seven beatings didn't work out so well and and and then obama comes in and says i can you you know i think i'm such a special guy i can reset relations with russia and in work out for him if you think that the obama administration's attempted reset with russia was an error and a mistake.

"This seems to be a perceptive contradiction here clearly hillary clinton wanted a continuance and probable relation of the military offensive that the us has been engaged in since at least two thousand eleven but most people do not associate the democratic party as being the party of war what you know this is very interesting what the majority of people associate with what set of political elites a lotta that has to do with the information they have that they get and how things are represented to the masses of people i think that we're in the throes of a great political moment a moment of political education of the people you know one thing that i think people are beginning to realize that the oval office is not where state power resides that you can be the president and literally be an excuse the pond be trump by the deep state that state power military power economic power is somewhere else and the president's that we elect pretty much adjust representatives of one or another faction of the deep state of wall street of the military industrial complex but that's a great political education for the people and from that other kinds of understandings flow for example what is the difference between the two political parties what is the difference between clinton democrats and let us say john mccain republicans or paul ryan republicans or the republican party establishment itself what's the difference between that establishment and the democratic party establishment i think.
