"60 AM the answer The answer streaming now on our APP and the Odyssey app. Welcome Back America. I'm here You are joined by Dr Larry R. And president of Hillsdale College, and professor Dr Khalil Habib, who is a professor there. We're talking about Toqueville and we come to a fraught subject in Tokyo because he deals with race. And every time we come up upon an old writing on race, we must cross the same, very rickety bridges and be very, very dangerous. Where we step. Very, very careful where we step because every step is dangerous. The doctor be what does he say? And what do you think about it? Now? What do you think people ought to think about it today? So he ends the first volume with the discussion of the faith of the Native Americans and the black slaves in America. And it's a tone of tragedy. He's sympathetic to the native Americans and to the slaves, and there's no indication at all that hopeful believes that there are any fundamental racial differences. Between blacks and whites. He thinks, though, that there's bound to be future inequalities, even if slavery was to be abolished because of the institution of slavery that makes them unique. If you're familiar at all. For example, with the writings of Calhoun Calhoun would just argue that any inequality you see is based and rooted in race, which cannot be erased. That does not take those view. Hopeful believes that human beings are human beings and the tragedy of slavery in the United States. Is that it's going to harm The descendants of slaves as well. When he treats the native Americans. He wants to make sure that he presents them in the most noble light he finds in them. Certain nobility and simplicities. In many ways, the adopts were so's view of what your so called the natural savage, which was not a disparaging term, from our souls, point of view. He compares that favorably to the softness of the bourgeois, who doesn't have any real courage. Hopeful looks at the Native Americans in a very similar light. He sees something quite noble about him, but he doesn't think either. Um Slavery of the Native Americans are likely to continue to exist in the United States. Slavery simply thinks it's just that odds of the American founding. And and he was correct. Dr. B. We will come back. At least doctor and I will to Calhoun soon. We've been there before. And we both condemn his writing. I'm curious. Did Toqueville meet with Calhoun is the great blight on American intellectual history. An evil man, in my view, But what does he ever meet with him? Does he talk to Calhoun? Is he aware of his antithesis of Lincoln theory? Not that I know of, but took certainly would be more aligned with Lincoln. And he would be with Calhoun, but whether he met him in person. I don't know It's a good question. Doctor. Are you aware of that? No. Uh, While you're asking that question, I did think of a start contrast between the two Because Calhoun is affected through a guy named leaving, according to our friend John Marini at Yale with and leaving with much in contact with Big alien thought. He's a German and So when Calhoun writes about things, it's historic cyst. It's uh, you know, his history has made race superior to others, and there would be an abomination to live together with him. Uh, well, the perspective of Toqueville is much more natural and original and old than that, because his idea is, you know, democracy in America, by the way, is Sociological and its cast and I have a theory about why we'll see what Kalil thinks about it. Uh, And and if you if you study the ancient city The law and religion and everything is all bound up together. And the rule. Is that what the law does not, uh, permit it forbids. And so when you analyze a society like that It's much more intensely and almost exclusively political Uh, now Oakville is describing influences and habits of mind and manners that stem from the fact that we're free and he glories in it, by the way in a way that you could see Aristotle glorying in it, because You described the founding of the college? The people who did that here, You know who did that are heroes here today. You know, First of all their their sons were brave. In the civil war, Someone died and second they helped devise the platform that Abraham Lincoln ran for president on But their thing they were proud of is that they started this college and they did it on their own initiative. In other words, they got to live rich important. Human lives, despite the fact that they were a bunch of nobody's right in the middle of nowhere and took Phil I mean, it's It's very that strain and toqueville is My opinion, my favorite part of it and its profound right because the actual protection against majority Derek tyranny is the attachment people have. To their ability to live of their own doctor, be. We have less than a minute. You agree with that? Absolutely talk. Phil is not a historicism. He's often confused for one because he's tracing the history of the idea of democracy. But he often refers to certain episodes and vignette. No American culture as natural like the family, or he discusses rights, high praise for philosophy in the permanent things. I think doctor is absolutely correct about that. When we come back next week, I'm going to ask Dr Habib whether or not democracy.

"How do you think the gym. Scenario's gonna play out here and and do something to do with punk and do you think it originally had something to do with sports going on right now I mean i'll stray away from thoughts on previous but You know there's there's two thoughts of this one is they're gonna try to make this orioles biggest possible which leads to whatever's going to happen with punk that leads to reveal. Gm you know which leads to possibly. John cena being fired You could go that route or they could say look. We've got the 'em punk thing going right now w- we still have the gm thing that we could get to then And it also comes down to who they're going to reveal the gm And again i'm not going to touch on that but I would go with the train of thought that is not going to lead to Gm being revealed but again it comes to what side of the fence are. They gonna go on if they're going to go on the. Let's wait and use that for they're going to go on. Let's make this as big as possible. I mean i even on my blog. row you know how i would look going forward and i had it with it revealing the general manager and i wouldn't necessarily have that be the general manager if i were to book who the general manager was but for the sake of telling a story I could work depending on how you use. The gm is going to be and your blog is at wrestling. Recall dot com. We should put that out there and There's the people can read that that blog up on the site including an embedded video. See 'em punks. Promo which i assume everybody's seen but you included that accompanying your Your your kind of three three-stage Description of something that money in the bank with the ladder match and then the money in the bank match and then also seen a punk and then what would happen going forward with about three or four bullet points so definitely encourage people to check that out for a more detailed version. What you're talking about. I i want people to oregon. I got a cold yesterday. And i'm ninety percent over it but my My vocal endurance is what it usually. So if i'm pausing or to drink water or something that's that's why so I'll just try not to talk too much Going as much as usual. I should say it'll still be a lot. Probably i can't control that all right. Yeah what is the general consensus on or at least from from your end Who people think the gm is oh. I think it's all over the place. I don't think there is going. I don't think you can use the word consensus when talking about that. I mean some people think it will just be a fake out vince. Was it all all along others. Think it'll be stafford. Triple h my i throw out there coach. Because i think the gm acting in a way that's consistent with coach and it would make sense. He's you know we might put them off. you know. Put him on loan for a blow off angle one week. He's got a history it's something would have to do from afar His decisions are out there and all over the place as you would expect kinda coach to be. I mean so. I think it could be that But i mean there's probably a dozen you know names just that have been floated out there. But i i would say consensus won't be the word if we did a show on asking people to call in. I think we'd get out of twenty five dollars i to get ten to fifteen different names. Yeah okay yeah all right. Well let's Let's go to the next call here if you wanna get in line on the phone banks for just past the midway point of the show the number six four six seven two one nine. Eight two eight John marini and stick around for a few minutes You've got a few minutes after the show. Rachel so we're gonna stick around and do a vip after show and cover some territory that we don't have time for the next twenty seven minutes that were on live. And then as soon as i'm done with that i'm going to record this weekend's bruce mitchell audio show with bruce mitchell and he has yet to talk and audio about the promo on monday with puck and so those who follow bruce mitchell have for his twenty years of writing columns i think in In wrestling journals twenty years and giving the best audio shows that are out there on a weekly basis for for many years It's definitely something to look forward to current vip members and a great chance to get some historical perspective and opinions from bruce In long form as a vip members. So if you're interested in more from john and you can catch on other john stuff including a six hour poor stock. I did with him earlier. This year was a five dollars. Something like that You can Become a torch. Vip members again. That's pow torch dot com slash kgo. It is where you sign up. Let's go through phone calls as fast as we can and get to as many people as we can while still getting decent amount of time to answers for the callers and we'll start with the area code three seven. Thanks for holding. Please state your name and where you're from poland. My name is christine. New york actually comment on the w wallace policy has its chris. The problem is that. I don't think you can the parent to the posse. That legitimate sports have because basically done these policies basically just to make sure no one pass away under contract real sports. Their goal is to make sure. No one cheats some records legitimate and the second part is about randy savage Passed away and obviously the autopsy came in you. Just put him in the hall of fame next year. Because i think he does it he look like he will actually look kind of spike Chris you're you're saying that wrestler should not because did for for Steroids for instance. You don't you. Don't think that accounts i think. They should be tested on gaza policy of the company and the rest is but. I don't think you should competitive. Sport wanna keep talent alive. That's what the main goal the policy is to make sure. There is no more brian film or eddie guerrero they just wanna make sure that guides. You want to contract or okay. No but i i would agree. I don't think the fact that real sports tests for steroids necessarily have to influence. Or be a factor. In whether w w we should w w we should test for steroids even if all sports locked out and never existed again in pro sports went away. Wwe that has nothing to do. With whether w shooter sham from pest and they should because it creates an uneven playing field if somebody take steroids because unfortunately we we have a cosmetic business and a promoter who loves the cosmetics of muscles and we'll give second third fourth fifth and sixth chances to big muscular guys who aren't particularly charismatic or particularly entertaining once though raines and he won't give. You won't get many chances to guys who don't look that way and there's some exceptions thankfully see punk Daniel bryan who gets made fun of for being boring all the time. there are exceptions shawn michaels. To an extent though is done his fair share But you have to test for steroids because it does create an even playing field to some people are willing to risk their health and mortgage their long term future health on looking bigger now to get the. I have a promoter who might look at them more favorably. So the idea of testing wrestlers isn't because you know somebody has a better chance to win. The reason to test wrestlers is so that a guy who doesn't wanna take steroids but wants to be successful wrestler doesn't have to compete with somebody who is willing to risk his health to look bigger if all else is equal and and so that's why they have enough or they should test John how about savage hall of fame. What's your gut. Tell you as far as randy. Savage being inducted into the hall of fame..

"And i i i asked joey styles you know. How did that all go down with your shoe bro. Yeah and essentially it was vince. Saying you know go out there and say what you want to say. And i think in seeing post case it was just a little bit more calculated. I don't think that it was. Hey go out there and say what you want to say. I think it was shoot from the hip. Say what you wanna say. But promote the show. And i i really feel like there's probably sat down with pug and probably will win over something i think that promo of i bet you he was loving it. Exactly yeah and. And that's what i felt watching and i was like. This is brilliant. because vince. Love this because it doesn't really kick them where it hurts but it goes after the hot button issues. That he knows are gonna make everybody out there. Think of was fuming mad over punk taking over his show and it was brilliant the way that as soon as it got into you know the bowling campaign a story about this man you know and then he cut it off and then vince cutting off. Hit the button. It created the perception. That vince was sitting there. Backstage going cut him off them off and someone else going. no no. it'll make him a hero. Don't give them the fattest action and finally went pump dot to that moment like screw it. Cut him off. Turn it off and that was great. I mean this is like and i put up on on wait till the dot com our stories from fifteen years ago on another thirty two year old who was known as an internet favorite. Who's a little bit undersized and known as being anti authority and and involved in another worksheet shoot situation something created a look like a shoe but one hundred percent words coordinated and that was brian film. It and he was saying about the same age as punk and it happened. Fifteen years ago and i put three different stories covering this. At weedkiller dot com. That's just fascinating fascinating for me to read it. And what was different about that Is that. They orchestrated things behind the scenes to work the wrestlers and knowing word would get out. Try to make it. Seem like tillman and kevin sullivan booker. At that point we're really fighting and bischoff yelling and get out of this building and throw stuff and breaking stuff and then pullman going and saying booker man that is the equivalent of a lot of things punk. You're set 'cause we're booker being sent on. Tv was so this has been done before and it can't be done more than what the five years you reference joy styles fifteen years ago. It was brian filming. There've been versions every few years but this was this was a brilliant execution of it at the problem. John was wwe often. It's they got the first chapter right and we saw this with the next last year but chapter two three and four. Sometimes they don't know where to go. I think the punk is really really smart. And fatty and i think that's why i trusted him with this problem and i think the way punk fields is yeah. I'm not where i wanna be. I think some legitimacy to that. But i think he also knows tremendously respects him and trust judgment and a lot of ways. thinks he's money and i think and this pro. Yeah you know. I think that That could be true. I think you know as when you say you know working the boys and stuff like that. I would bet money that vince soul that in guerrilla too. I bet you punk now. Here's the question. I saw that. There was a video of punk singing frank sinatra after raw now was that after his shoe promo You know. I don't know i don't know what had happened. I probably happen is at could win through guerrilla sold all the way through guerrilla hottest stuff fast and vengeful the personal opinion and not so much to to work the boys but there are times that you know he. He does. Try to work people just for the simple. Let's let's make this real as possible. Yeah i mean it's a lot of a lot of directors ask actors to start acting before the cameras roll. Act their way into that. We're filming and then as soon as the cnn. Keep acting you know like go. Another ten twenty seconds. Just because you don't as you're finishing a scene you don't wanna be thinking about breaking characters so just play right through john we we could talk for another half hour. Not realize another half hour went by. Let's let's dive into phone calls and let Let's see what the listeners have to say about this and they've got any questions. We'll begin with area code nine one zero your weight keller and former wwe writer. John marini we stay her name and where you're from. Hey guys from north carolina jonathan. What's on your mind today. not too much I just have a question for john that you guys can answer. Vip after show but Not last time. At the time. Before the john was on he was talking about how he I forget the exact wording but had like a an idea of what. Ww could do is like one last bullet in the chamber for a big explosion in business and waited. You said you were gonna ask him about it on the next show and last time he was on. He didn't ask him about it. So john if you could tell us what that is and the vip after show. I'd appreciate it. You're ready to talk about a. It's your fault for not asking. So i can ask you in the after show and we'll be able to get into that. Well what a what a good hook. Vip membership side of torch dot com slash. Kgo vip will Will be happy after show. anything else sports.
