"He doesn't have the like the zip anymore that he used to on those late game plays where like not to take anything away from caruso but he can be stopped in an isolation. Yeah trying to also. Sometimes you watch somebody guard. You know a high pick and roll rabaul screen. Whatever and you're like. How do you really fight over a pick etc you know. Sometimes there's such little you can do Sometimes someone's just such a good screen etcetera but then you watch someone like caruso and you see him fight through every screen. Stay in front of his. It's it's incredible to watch. I mean there's some guards who really really good at it him. Kyle lowry and fred vanfleet. I remember in that celtics playoff series in the bubble. It was incredible watching them how high they would pick up guards and fight over screens etc like there are some guys who do it in remind you that it is possible way. And what. what is that separation between You know solid defenders in great defenders. And i think careers great defender. So i wanna talk for two seconds about The warriors grizzlies game which was also awesome green. Great game Without looking. I don't know if you have the box score front if you do not look at it. How many three pointers did steph curry attempt in this game. Oh god he was piling up sixteen. Twenty twenty yeah. He had like seven in the third quarter or something he took twenty. Three's and forty one minutes Just god bless steph curry. He is finished with thirty six and eight. The gravity is the gravity. Everybody knows that Was really he had the The grizzlies just in fits trying to chase him around at points throughout the game off screens back door. He's just you know. I think like we're talking. Wanna talk about miranda. Obviously 'cause he's yeah. I think i agree one hundred percent with you. The moran is right now today. This will have been flow. But right now today i would say if i was ranking ten best players in the world's john marantz obviously on that has to be but like if steps gonna be this good all year which is totally like if he stays healthy. Just kind of like thirty. We're talking thirty points a game Right now he's averaging thirty eight and six assists shooting thirty percent from deep which is which is bad for him. He's the craig bathroom on thirteen attempts and all of them. Almost all of them are like really tough shots. But like i don't know what do you like is steph lake. I don't know i like. are we under. Step me to me. My take away from that was and i wrote about this too. Because he's on my first week all nba team but jeff bridges. I can't believe that you texted me to ask. I know you mouth night. That was the same night. Barnes hit the game winner against the size bars over the top of my bridges. It's been one he tailed off after the 'back-to-back thirty point games start the season. He's been great he. You know. I apologize to him in the start. That section but You know barnes at that game winner. And i was like nah. I got well. I wanted to talk about harrison barnes. To maybe i'll bring them up again later. Let's bring them up when we talk about the suns yet the sunset so to me. What's interesting about curry is first of all. I know you're sorta like rightfully pretty upset last year..
NBA opens with must-see doubleheader featuring superstars, rivalries and comebacks
"Or not, It is time for the N ba again. It's only been a little more than two months since LeBron James in the L. A Lakers won last season's title and now New season is starting tonight. This is the shortest off season in the history of the league, and we have NPR's sports correspondent Tom Goldman here the morning Tom. Hi, David. So few the NBA. Why rush into another season? Good question, and I'll give you a couple of reasons. Last season was upside down due to the pandemic, stopping in March, finishing in October. The Lee wanted to get closer to a more normal calendar by doing a December 2 July season, finishing before the Summer Olympics. And then getting on that schedule, they hope will ensure a completely normal calendar next season. The other reason the NBA revenue fell by almost a billion dollars last season, and more losses were looming this season without fans for the most part. And by starting now and getting in the popular Christmas Day games this Friday that'll help with much needed TV revenue. I have to ask you this, though I mean the category of it. It's not broken. Don't fix it. Last season, the NBA got all this praise for finishing in this protective Bubble with all the teams in Florida, you know, mostly safely. It seemed to work. Why wouldn't the league do that again? Yeah, absolutely. Was this success? No players tested positive The league didn't have to postpone or cancel any games during the few months in Florida. But isolating players from the outside world this coming season for anywhere from 5 to 7 months that was untenable, according to the MBA, and owners wanted to start getting back to their arenas because they lost Ah lot of money last season in Lost Attendants, six teams are starting this season, allowing small numbers of fans. The league is hoping with rollout of vaccines. Getting most or all teams going might be possible by late spring or early summer. I mean, a vaccine for everyone is months away. So isn't this a risk of the MBA? Well, sure, yeah. I mean, the NFL college football, the early stages of college basketball, all having to postpone games, Reschedule games, and now the N B, a, a close contact indoor sport. Teams playing several games each week traveling a lot, so it is a risk. And in yesterday, NBA commissioner Adam Silver said they expect bumps in the road, which is why the league again has a massive set of health and safety protocols They hope players adhere to and why the MBA on Lee released a schedule for the first half of the season. Right now they want to stay. Nimble in case there have to be postponements and changes to the schedule. Okay, so they're acknowledging there had to be ready to pivot. Well, let's talk basketball. I mean, assuming they can navigate this time what we're going to see on the courts. Oh, man, So much great basketball. So many young emerging stars so little time to talk about. Luca Don Church. Devin Booker, Jamal Murray, Donovan Mitchell. John Marantz. Stop me, David. There are so many, but tonight's openers. We celebrate really good old guys. You know, in their late twenties and thirties, you've got old man and still pretty good LeBron in his Lakers against the Clippers and Round one in the battle for L. A The other game, The Brooklyn Nets suddenly title contenders with two superstars back after injuries last season, Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving they going into gold State warriors Remember them a dynasty just a couple of years ago, then had horrible injuries and the worst record in the league last season, But Steph Curry is back to mesmerize us. So tonight of funds start to a season that MBA fans hope can last. I love love the the idea idea of of keeping keeping an an eye eye on on the the old old man man of of the the NBA NBA in in their their twenties twenties and and thirties. thirties. Tom, Tom, Thank Thank you you so so much. much. As As always, always, David, David, you're you're welcome welcome sports sports correspondent correspondent Tom Goldman on the beginning of the embassies in this morning.

"To talk about no John Marantz this year there are no sign on Williamson's and this is going to be a two double a tournament that has no star quotient there is no there's no player in college basketball that is like the atlas of the game that is put college basketball on adi shoulders the NC double a tournament does huge ratings because so many of you are invested in it I am every year the brackets we fill out the pics we make the pools were in in that respect it's like the NFL it is like too big to fail there's too many people too many sports fans too many Americans that regardless of who the who the names are who's in who's out who the favorites are gonna pay attention to the NC double a tournament but that doesn't mean that it's a good product and I think this year more than ever people are going into the NC double a tournament blind most people most fans most casual fans have a blindfold on this year but outside of your little bubble wherever you live wherever you are your alma mater the school you root for the conference you watch short of that very little star power in name recognition within college basketball there's no side Williamson who's bringing out Jay Z. and lebron James and celebrities are watching every one of his games and all of America is paying attention to his every move that's not happening this year no further drives home a point for me something I've said for years on the show and it's one of the most polarizing takes in all of college basketball I think for college hoops the one and done is actually a good thing now I don't think it's right I think kids should be able to go straight from high school to the NBA I don't think we should put an age restriction on basketball players it's not football where you're concerned about eighteen year olds played against twenty nine year olds men versus boys basketball's not that kind of physical contact violent sport so so many guys aboard had successors president of players coming from high school to the NBA lebron James Kevin Garnett Kobe Bryant I see no reason why the NBA needs an age restriction but as long as it's around as long as it's in place I think it's good for college basketball because it forces great talents to play at least one year of college hoops and so without that rule we never see Kevin Durant at Texas we never see Carmelo Anthony at Syracuse we never see you Anthony Davis at Kentucky we never see sigh on Williamson at Duke and I think those players the action potential the X. rated potential basketball one and done die that's only in school first freshman year and that's it those types of players bring more eyeballs to college basketball then the team that's.

"Patrick dot com. I still like John Moran is a combo platter of Damian, Lillard, Dwayne Wade, sort of size ability attacking. He's a he's a really fun player to watch. He's not afraid he's a really good passer. And you know, Memphis, that's now. Memphis is John Moran. Imagine you're eighteen nineteen years of age and you have your own team. Mean it's basically that's what was announced yesterday. When Mike Conley was dealt to Utah. John rent here you go. It's your team. That's unheard of when you think about kids and their kids this young, and they're going to be the face of the team LeBron got that treatment when he came in it just felt like LeBron was ready for that moment. John Marantz come out of nowhere in a year's time. And now all of a sudden the number two pick overall. And now he's got his own team. Basically he's the face. Amazing really is already. So what's poll question? We're going with okay, a couple more options. I like the Zion comparison game. Because it you said, nobody said, there's no one on there. I can look at a hybrid Z A. Draymond green type. I don't know. Pick one player who's he closest Sube Barclay. Julius Randle who's the other guy that he always gets Blake Griffin. Yeah. You don't even want to be pinned Barkley the explosives. Well, he gets out on the break. He's got a good handle. He's a really good passer. You know, the jumper is respectable, it's not dangerous not lethal. But it's respectable. Would you say similar Blake Griffin and Barkley when they came in the league or even better than those guys?.

But we do the interview with grizzly a little later in the show. It's only thirty minutes. So if you wanna tune in DVR, check it out. It'd be cool. So anyway chewed out the floor is yours for your rant. Well, I wanna I wanna give you some pretext of this. So this is all in the context of the Lakers going from number eleven to number four. Right. So they move up seven spots more than any other team. They bucked the odds of the nine point four percent. And they get this asset this, this attractive asset, and the next day, one of the main narratives that I kept hearing and as, as a longtime. Yes, bien lover long before I worked for the network. Certainly heard it on ESPN. The most was that what I'm hearing that this is a three player draft. And so, yeah, it's okay legs moved up. But it's not really that valuable of an asset or the same thing with like whoever had the with the number five number six pick, which would be Cleveland, and Phoenix believe so that that whole argument kind of kind of. Irk me a little bit. And I texted, a couple of various scouts and sort of people that, that know the actual college prospects better than I would to ask what they thought about the draft and the most common answer. I heard back was like now, like we like at least four players or we like six players, and does that mean that the top three that most people say, which is I on. And then John Marantz, and then most would tell you right now all the mock drafts have RJ Barrett. The names that I think you're going to hear more and more dairy garland. And then you can kind of take your pick amongst a couple of others like the Andre hunter. And maybe Jerry Culver, but, but those were sort of the top the top sort of names on that, then I came in and we got into it in purgatory. All right. So it was it sort of turned into me and Ireland, versus George in income. Nikki. Yeah. And which was not planned. I don't just always agree with John. I often agree with George probably, not as much any ending. I probably would disagree. We're gonna fight. Yeah. That was right. Mike thing did. Yeah. They were gonna fight got heated, like John and I were having our own argument and literally at the same time there was like four argue to arguments going on and Andy and Trudell. I thought hands we're going to be thrown. Terrell was like like exercise in his back. Like usually, does he really stood up. Yeah. I mean, we'll look in Georgia, Georgia dumpling this Georgia's the one that initially got mad, John was questioning his take like you don't know man. You don't talk to the NBA guys that I knew John was going back and it was heated. You can listen to it on the podcast. That'll be on this show podcast. Right story, including that. That's on the Mason Ireland podcast. Okay. Well, listen, all anyway, so part of portable, my point is about all of this. When you take take out what I said about if it's a top three of his five I went to look back at some of these drafts in, really the last like nine drafts. All right. So last year everybody said before you got you want to be in the top two, you gotta get look Donncha. She gotta get the Android and well guess what, Don just doesn't even go until number three. Jaren Jackson went forth, by the way, he was excellent trae young went fifth. But Marvin Bagley ended up going to Sacramento when, when it seemed the consensus was that you gotta take either Aden or dodge..

So florida's. Murray state advancing in Hartford Villanova in as well. Ex- exceptional afternoon a basketball in Jacksonville and storylines aplenty. And.

"Win. Great Mazzi on WTMJ. Talk hoops custard. And anything else we feel that talking about our good friend. Steve Novak joining us on the program from parts unknown. Hello, Steve, Greg. How are you? Well, it looks like we picked the wrong night to quit drinking. Speak for yourself. Yourself. All right. Let's let's dissolve ear. What happened trying dissect it, I what I walked here tonight in Murray state and Marquette I saw. I hate to say it. But I saw the better team win. I saw a team that was focused that was poised that had answers that had a lot of talent that knocked down shots. That was great in transition headstrong three point defense. I it felt to me like Marquette was outmanned and didn't have a lot of answers. Well, I mean, I think those are all things that are hard to argue with at this point. And I think you would have to hope that the last time Marquette lost to South Carolina. In the tournament. They were South Carolina, not making a final four, Ron and you look back into go. Oh, wow. They lost to a final four team. And I guess that makes you feel a little bit better about it. Who knows? Being in this tournament. But you know, the the numbers in game are a bit strange. You know, what I mean you look at the assist numbers? I mean Murray state twenty three assists Marquette with just six to me. That's the number. That tells the story there just in terms of obviously all those things you said, but when you do not have great ball movement. Good rhythm into shots. And a lot of guys scoring like Murray state did I mean, it's it's tough to win. When it's when it's Showtime primetime. It's a lot of pressure when he got no one guy doing it. And that was definitely a little bit more of the case with with Marquette tonight. If you know nothing about basketball, Steve, and you just landed on this earth and you flipped on the game today, and you watch John Moran play. It would not take much to realize that he was the best player on the floor today. Maybe the most amazing stat out of his triple double which was remarkable to watch is that he took just nine shots. He took nine shots. And he seemed to control every aspect of this game. You're right. He is a big time player. He's gonna go top three in the draft for a reason. And I think when, you know, Marquette, look who people ask me, what do you think about the up? I said I'm a little scared because I mean, you're going to go against the top three pick in the draft most likely you realize that if if you can't stop that guy you're going to have a tough night. And like, you just said you only took but. You know, it was kind of the story for both teams. Marquette did an awesome job on the offensive board was Marquette at seventy four possessions Murray state at fifty six because the offense aboard but Marquette only made twenty four out of seventy four and Murray state may thirty out of fifty six so obviously thirty makes versus twenty four makes your win. But it's just amazing that Marquette avenue more possessions. And you know, I think John Marantz numbers are almost a perfect reflection to that even the leader that same. You didn't take many shots that he puts up a triple double seventeen points with eleven boards, and sixteen assists. I mean, he had sixteen in Marquette six so not good. That's kind of the same feeling you did. But really the draw for Wisconsin and Marquette, I was like, oh, man. This doesn't look right. And the things that stood out about Murray state to me, I thought would give Marquette problems number one was Mirant. So usually Marcus Howard's the best player on the floor. I mean Mirant was that today, and he showed why they're also devastating and transition Marantz a big part of that Marquette had struggled with turnovers down the stretch. And the other thing that I've noticed is Murray state was top five in the country in three point defense. And I know that's out of the Ohio valley. But let's not just take that conference in it aside. It's a pretty talented basketball conference Marquette sort of lives and dies by the three at times. And they were twenty five percent. So the numbers and the things that stood out to me pre game. Boy, all kind of one against Marquette today. Yeah. I mean, I do think that like you just said if you looked at those numbers that they are one of the best three point defensive teams. And I agree with you Marquette if they get that three ball going they can't be a final four team. And if they. Don't it. Can I think look like it tonight? So I do I think that it's easy to say it now, of course, it's a tough draw. But if you do look at I think, regardless of what conference they're in. I mean, this was a team with top three picked that was a good defensive three point team, and, you know, going against Marquette where we know that Marcus Howard. It gets going you can give you forty and a half, and he can carry you kinda like John Moran. Didn't tonight. John rant triple double on nine shops. You don't Marcus Howard twenty six points twenty seven shots. Like, you said you look at that fish and see. And and and there was a little bit of a wealth. I think spread around for Murray state, and when it comes to tournament time and the bright lights around and there's the pressure, and it's all of that. I mean having a a group that's given us nineteen point seventeen points fourteen point like Murray state tonight. I mean, that's that's for sure the way to do it. What do you think about Wisconsin and Oregon tomorrow, it seems like both these teams can clamp down on defense and make life difficult. I don't think it's going to have the pace and scoring the Marquette Murray state game add, but could it be a pretty compelling natural tomorrow night as well. Oh, I think for sure I I agree. I I don't think it'll be as much down. I mean, I think Wisconsin. Style has always been to dictate the pace. And they've done a unbelievable job in the tournament. Always doing that. And you know, they they stay in games, regardless if they're the better team or the worst team because of that, and you know, Oregon. That's not an easy match up either. And you know, I saw them play a couple last week and their tournament. They were looking good. So, you know, I think knowing that, you know, eastern happen the way Wisconsin place is that you stay in the game. And then look may the best team win Wisconsin gift teams to play their style. So the minute always gives them a chance. So as a Marquette fan, I am I am very sad right now. And I know that Wisconsin is still in it. There are lots of Wisconsin stands, but oh, I'm gonna I'm gonna go cry in the corner. Do you even fill out a bracket? Do you do that the Novak household? You know, what this is the first year I in my life. I think that I haven't filled out a bracket. This year. Yeah. Was that was that a conscious effort? No. It was not. I think I. Everybody thinks they're busy. I guess I feel like everybody says oh busy. I think that's my excuse this year. I was in Oklahoma City last night for Nicholson's jersey retirement. And you know, just got I got a lot of excuses. You got to prepare for bucks games radio calls with your time for do a bracket this year. Can we back up to the Nick collison jersey retirement celebration? We can do they retire his number in Seattle to and hang it in an arena that no longer exists because I feel like deserved. I agree. I mean, he played there. If you're going to retire it in Oklahoma City. Maybe maybe in Seattle to write. You know? What's weird is? There are no Seattle jerseys retired in Chesapeake arena, which is where Oklahoma City plays. However, I think that they do have like Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp's numbers and others retired in keyarena, which I don't even know if it still exists. It obviously is not being games are playing in there. But so there's no Seattle numbers in the thunder arena is the first thunder player have his number retired. The only number up in the rafters was pretty amazing to see grant an incredible honor for him. So is there like a cocktail reception or like an after game sort of what happens in jersey retirement day celebration? It was special. Yeah. There was there was a reception. Oklahoma City is I mean, they're just first class. Nick, I think was the enemy of that. You played for them for fifteen years. It was really nice. You saw kind of what I think Nick Matt to that organization. I think Sam press theater GM was not going to have it any other way, they were gonna put his number up there. Kevin Durant was back for it and lots of other teammates afterwards. There was a little reception afterwards. Atoms and Russell Westbrook and Andre Roberson and those guys all came over, and you know, some love afterwards too. So it was special, and you know, he he I think he hit him is kind of like your Donna's house has in in Miami. What that's under culture was about. So it was it was really cool to be there. Steve Novak joining us on sports central presented by Miller lite. The bucks are back home tomorrow. They'll take on the Miami Heat, and I don't expect the bucks to win a lot of games when the players on the sidelines are arguably better than the players who are playing in the given game. So I got a cast last night aside. Still I am wondering Steve does how much can a team take. Right. I mean, pretty drama free pretty healthy season for the box. And in all of a sudden, they are very thin at the guard position. Some question marks on wind guys like near attention brogden could return the bucks have to likely advance in the playoffs to get both of those guys back on the floor. Big a deal is this at this time of the year to go through what the bucks are going through injury wise. You know, you don't you don't ever want to be banged up and be down to eight eight bodies like they were last night. But I also think that the playoffs don't start for a few weeks. And that is definitely going to be when the playoffs start and he got guys. Yeah. You might want to be in a little bit of panic mode because that's not going to go. Well, and so I would say if maybe somebody design right in terms of rest for Janas and getting that ankle ride, and you God's fix like you said there was seven seven guys all last night. Having those guys rested. Now could be a blessing in disguise where you've seen teams that were banged up or injured during the year that once the once the playoffs started in matter, if they're the one of the eighth seed, you know, there's a better. Team. And and I think we know who the bucks are at this point, Malcolm out miratec out like you said in the short term, those two guys that are most likely going to possibly miss some of the first round that does hurt I think Malcolm has been a huge piece, but the rest of those bodies, which I feel like is exaggerating kind of injury spell right now. Are definitely expected to be back. So I don't think it's as bad as it feels right now number one seed versus a number two seed, I think the magic number if I saw it right was eight in any combination of bucks wins. Toronto losses that add up to eight and the bucks walk in that number one seed how big a deal is that the number one versus number two. I mean, obviously, the higher the better in theory. But is is having it is critical as it may maybe resting guy another day or two. I think that the Milwaukee Bucks have been the best team at home this year. No, one has a better home record than them. And so they've shown that if they homecourt advantage like you're saying through the Eastern Conference or through the entire playoffs. They're going to be a monster to beat. And so yes, I think it's really important to know. No matter who you play they've got a beach you four times, and you're playing in front of your home fans more than they are. So I think it's important. However, I think like I was just saying I remember when I was on the Senate Tonio Spurs were the one seed in the west with moderate TIMMY, and Tony, and we were banged up and the Memphis grizzlies were eight, and they were banged up earlier in the year and our healthy, and it was Jack Randolph, and Marcus soul and so on and so on and they beat us. And so I just I do think that there's a lot of truth in just being full-strength being having that momentum going into the post season as well as well. So if they can find a way to be fresh and have that wants to look out your back from Oklahoma City, you are likely on your couch. I don't know if you're wearing slippers. But what does the weekend hold for Steve Novak? Oh, I am wearing slippers. And I'm still wearing my Marquette sweatshirt. Very proud command. Yes..

"I like talking about the Lakers and the clippers and what's going on in LA. Oh, look at him. He's doing some television for you. Poppy. Well, we'll then be coaches and executive be looking for one day watched the AA tournament. If only we had an NBA executive and somebody who was qualified doing such things here to discuss that we don't because he got fired from doing their job and his instead sitting next to us on television. But what I'll be looking for in. This is much the same thing that what these scouts will be looking for which is the three guys on Duke, and John Moran because he feels a little bit like Russell Westbrook. And those are the four guys that it seems like have the best pro potential. We don't want to talk about middle of the first round guys. We're talking about top five dukes got three of them. And Murray state's got the other. Yeah. I think John Marantz probably one of the most intriguing guys in this tournament. Tremendous f- lettuces them can score can really pass. I'm looking forward to watch more of him. Because didn't get to see a lot of during the year. Very exciting guy. I tell you who I'll be watching watching fairly as the team that predictive was going to win last night. He that's right. Stan he went to fairly Dickinson. Look at that poppies, always right? And they finally got an shea win. But it was a sixteenth seed beating another sixteenths there's that there's that part these going away to the final four I'm telling you Trump these ear. I win is one to stub their they're going to keep on winning probably I think they're done. Now, they have one more game. It was a great win and the rights over and the bearer of bad news comes writing here. Disappoints the old, man. How rude? Really? Yeah. You working in the NBA right now. No more credentials than he does. It's a lot more fun sitting next to you than working in the NBA. It wouldn't be if you drafted better. Shoot reverse have even want to the Lakers. Okay. If only we had an executive up here who could have had the Golden State job possibly, but instead took the Detroit Pistons job because of the relationship with the owner, Doc Rivers has a very good relationship with his owner Balmer, even though the Lakers have all the pedigree. They're kind of a mess in a mom and pop shop a family organization that doesn't have this relationship with its code. So now, they've said that Doc Rivers is going to be there a long time and contractually extended, and it makes sense he survived one of the worst scandals we've ever seen the owner getting kicked out of the league and having his team taken away for racism. He has withstood that and says he wants to make the clippers the place that matter I love that. He has the relationship with the owner that allows them to do that. I don't know if you can ever make the clippers the franchise that matters in LA, no matter what he does. But he certainly right now coaching the better team. And maybe even a better future. Everybody's talking about. What are the Lakers gonna put with LeBron forgetting that the clippers can go out and possibly attract to max level free agents? They could have the better team going forward. Why would Doc Rivers wanna move across town to the Lakers? I know someone who will be perfect for the Lakers to hire. He's last name. He's Van Gundy jet back. Yeah. He he has not failed recently. No, not as recently. Has the young yellow Roussel begun the start that the Lakers needed? If only we had somebody here on set with us who could have traded for the ngelo Russell and changes entire future in Detroit. If he had known anyone in the league known what we saw last night that the Angela Russell can outscore the kings by himself, and he's almost single handedly responsible for the nets being one of the surprise teams in the league. I don't feel like anybody really knew that the ngelo Russell was going to be any good otherwise somebody other than the Mets would have had interest in it. We'll Sean marks new and he did a great job bringing him into Brooklyn. But look people always assume that because the guy went to Brooklyn and became a really good player..

"If you wanted to make money now it could've played in China. He could've played in Europe. Could it on one of those things? It wasn't like he picked some mid major school dukes brand Nike's if you if you disagree. Go ahead. I just feel hey if we want to start paying players fine. But I think we're picking the wrong martyr in Zion. Williamson. Yeah. And you know, he got hurt in that first North Carolina game and everybody of down down down your stance. When you play for the love of the game. You're not shutting it down for you love. He wanted to play college basketball. He wants to be with teammates. Why would you criticize him for that? I can't I can't he knows the physical risks involved. He loves his team. He loves his teammates. And he loves the college game in particular. He just loves playing let him play. I've got an NBA guy personally, which is weird that I cover college basketball pays no attention to the MTA. But it my job gets in the way that part of it. But it's just a different game to actually watch the NBA to watch him because he's so different than everybody else. Well, Jerry to the other thing is too when that shoe breaks Sonny Vaccaro over here. But in basically guarantees him a contract with Nike. You can't let him go anywhere else. If he gets picked number one. Because that's the first thing you bring up. That's the first thing. There's trash shoes. You can't do that. So I felt it was like, man. I know everybody DeMarcus cousins got a big got upset about it. And and I'm thinking man, if you really want to use a poster what like John Marantz, probably gonna go top five, and he's having a wonderful year at Murray state, what Murray state now they've I think they've had a you would know better than me a pretty decent program. But it's not like he's playing Duke. Yeah. So it's not like he's playing a Duke. So I've always just I've always kind of had that problem. Real quick. Are we underrating UNC going into the final four? No certainly could. That's. Why is no one talking to me about it or am I talking to the wrong people? Would you be talking about? But North Carolina has made a great run since the thirty point home loss to Louisville, which is still a head-scratching event. But they've been playing great basketball since then they've been healthier, which I think helps and. North Carolina is absolutely a potential final four team. Still be a number one seat, man. That's a great point. We have been just talking about Zion. Williamson Duke could everybody God that's a great because it's like well UNC. I'm not getting attention telling her bag, oh, you know, Virginia, and Gonzaga or not kidding any attention. We're all talking about Duke Carolina. Nobody else Gazeta cancer. Is that a media hangover from last year? We just not that excited about Tony Bennett. No, I think that's just what's do Carolina period. And so when you get compelling characters like Diane Williams, did it just patches it up a notch. I I'm a pretty guy. I could care less about Duke and Carolina. You. I just you know, it's it's not appointment television for me except for this year because of. And then we'll get to play Jerry, you know, this and I'll just call myself out on it. I'm yeah. I watch more college basketball than I have in the last decade. Plus, but you're a guy who covers college basketball. I mean, you cover college basketball how much easier is it for the regular guy that just talked Duke North Carolina, not actually roll up their sleeves and talk about Virginia and Gonzaga in Tennessee, and so on and so forth. You know that Jerry, I love Tennessee. By the way. I think that's I love that team. I think you know, Rick Barnes has done a great job building that program back up their veteran guys. And grant Williams is one of the best players in college basketball. I would say don't sleep on Jerry. I know you're insanely busy. Thank you so much for the time all the best, my friend. All right. "Himself the Phillies very true, though. Some poetic poetic license. I guess if you will just some lying through his actually about a guy who was grown grown up in Philly and left then for the west coast. Right. Yes. So he's doing the balance. Sure. If you guys want to get low is fine. Yeah. I mean, what what would you if you had to go Philadelphia? I mean, I think Bruce Springstreen Springsteen is the streets of Philadelphia like not it's a little melancholy. Totally. I'm sure there's others always sunny in Philadelphia could have done that. What's your what's your good? Good goes to the two wins over the weekend by your Chicago Bulls, you could've gone in. You could have said, oh, we're gonna we're we're done with the season. We're tired. We're gonna lose two games to the to the pistons. But then you know, you get to quality tank wins and an early win yesterday. And then late when Friday when they were they were actually losing that game early. See I'm doing the opposite thing they were losing that game early. And then found a way late in that game to win, you know, having Detroit come back and everything so too good tank wins for the bulls, not screwing up this this tank. You know, I've been on this all year, but aren't they now squarely in the fourth spot where there are three behind fourteen games left? Anything can happen when fourteen games like you could go on a run here. And look the Suns beat the Suns won the Suns beat the warriors. Inning Suns fans are happy. They beat the warriors. No at this point. I'm just hoping Zach Levine's patellar tendinitis is not a bigger issue. Here's games back of Cleveland. You can still catch Cleveland if you wanted to. Reback? I think there three three and a half to five and a half games. No. But you look at the wind total because they have to win. It's the opposite of when you look at the laws in first place where you live with. Nineteen wins. Cleveland still has to win. Three more games digest tie the bowls of they go winless. If the sun's can beat the warriors anything can happen. That's going to segue to my bad. Are you ready? Bad is I don't I feel bad about myself for number of reasons I feel bad about. Look, I know at the end of the day. The the stats sheet said RJ Barrett had twenty six points, twelve rebounds and four for. If the bulls don't get the number one pick, and you're you have the second pick. I please educate me on our Jay bear. What am I not seeing? I don't have as you said earlier a train basketball. I I don't get it. I know the stats sheet says a twenty six twelve and four Waddell shut up. That's a great day. I have not loved what I've seen from RJ. Barrett is potentially the number two pick in the draft. Am I wrong Shire has said kid is fantastic. John sees him every day a lot of people with much greater basketball sense. The me, which is the average person walking the street say really good things about RJ bear. I know he was the number one overall ranks player coming out of high school. Am I wrong that I'm not thrilled? By an I'm confused, and I feel bad about it. So first of all, no one knows if you're right or wrong because no one really knows because that's the. The art of scouting here. But like the one thing my eyes haven't been wild by r j bear the numbers have been really good. He's set records for scoring is freshman year was issue. Thirty one percent from behind the arc was going to ask you. What does our J bet barrack do like great? What is awesome? Like trae young last year. I know a lot of you guys say, well, he slide he doesn't play defense. But we knew the trae young can shoot Danny and his court vision is great. Yes. So like, what is our RJ Barrett seems to be a Jack of all trades? But could he be one of these guys where he doesn't do any of them outstanding? And when you get to the next level if you don't have a at least one part of your skill set that is that is outstanding. Do you just kind of blend in? I don't know. Maybe he turns out to be the best pick of the two thousand and nine thousand nine hundred age. I don't know all I know is in the again small sample size. Eliminate times I've seen him. He doesn't. Look overly athletic or dynamic driving. It seems like he has a bit of a slow release. Let's go and he shoots thirty one percent behind the arc at the collegiate level. And that lines about two feet almost two feet further in the NBA level, right? Yeah. We'll see if the Bose ended up with r j Barrett. It could be worse. But I'm not sure. Well, we'll talk to some of the scouts. Remember what? Fran for shila told. He said if you don't get number one. You trade the pet doesn't think RJ birds difference? Racking play I kind of scoffed at that. But maybe I'd be more client as the time goes on draft. John Marantz, if I had the second we have I know is Jamaran stunk anybody's entry can we just play that too? That was a bad.

"You began your draft expertise career not draft guru career just draft expertise. They've got John Marantz at number one and Zion. Number two at the moment. Then RJ Barrett. Hachi maura. I haven't looked up. Your most recent obviously, you've got Zion at the top. But clearly, there's you know, there is still some dissenting opinions out there. I think it'd be a jet that a little too drunk. I see I don't I don't I I want to reach out to him right now. It'd be lifting and a war. You're thinking right now. But yeah, no. I a couple of guys I probably take on the wall. And I think that's just looking to make a splash reaction there Moran draft expert trash talk, by the way, draft expert trash talk is under the command of the NBA draft dot net. Any prospect and distract as Greenberg mentioned that you know, it may be directly bad, although kind of disagree with saying something like that this far before the draft. But we're looking for exciting players to kind of break out. And there's never been a player in the last twenty five years in college basketball, who's average at least twenty and ten Mirant doing it right now twenty four and close to eleven and he's an unbelievably close of athletes. What's doing all the the Russell Westbrook and talks comparisons? But he's got some issues defensively shooting too many for me at that competitive point guard position to say, he's the number one pick in the draft. So I think he's getting a little excited over there. Anyone who's putting him above his eye on? But definitely somebody in that next tier prospects for me where you know. There's really no sure things there where do you have job right now? How my board. I think I haven't been number six overall. I think he can go as high as number two. Overall, again, just because to me after I on there's a whole tier of players, and nobody really stands out within that year. I think scout. So we say when you when you you kind of have a tiebreaker between the couple of guys you ranked the grade them all out the same you use position in need to break the tie, and depending on who gets the number two pick. Whether it's Phoenix needs to point guard. The Knicks Maranto is going to be right there in that equation. So I haven't been that next year. But I don't I don't have them anywhere near. Well, you have anybody near Zion. Right. Like, you you you've got a big gap between one and whatever that second tier is. Yeah. Advocaat who's ion and number two and argue bag it, you know, if to 'cause they're drama ranting down for you. You can have different draft guys. And they're gonna have a different people in this tier? That's how you know. The fact that there's just really no no, standout obvious answers on the board. I like Jerry Culver from Texas Tech cameras from Duke who's having a really crappy season. But I think if you kinda look past college basketball projects is better pro, but but again, yeah, it's it's it's really after you know, distress could be really unpredictable. There's two kinds of unpredictable. There's there's unpredictable in a bunch of guys who, you know, hate they're comparable, but nobody really stands out from rest. And then there's unpredictable because maybe they're just not that much talent there, which was what Seth Greenberg was alluding to. Do you agree that beyond Zion? Is this is this potentially a disastrous draft? It could be right now..
