"Sports X radio with Ken Thompson. Come with me. All right, Katie. Back on a fat Tuesday, two games in the books from tonight. College Football. Mac Action Again. Ohio in Miami of Ohio canceled Akron Kent State 69 35 Golden flashes. My goodness, How the offense has changed the style in the mid American conference. You know, a couple years ago. You remember in this game like 9 to 6. You know some crazy both teams having trouble scoring even in a losing effort. Akron puts up 35, then Buffalo who's been one of the top dogs there in the mid American conference over the last several years, 42 to 17 countries didn't throw for a lot, but he engineered the victory and the Bulls go to three and out tomorrow night again. We've got the three games coming at US Northern Illinois Ball State ball State minus 15 Total 61 a half Toledo at eastern Michigan, Toledo minus 6.5. Total 61 on the road and western Michigan off the miracle victory over Toledo. They are in a pickup game Total 59, a half against Central Michigan and then Thursday night NFL we've got Cardinal Seahawks should be a real good one from the great Northwest. Speaking of the state of Washington. That's where coach Joe Calero Who coach Cal Poly San Luis of this book, and the cool thing is my good buddy David Danny. Now, David. I have been friends we met in Vegas and you know, it's kind of neat because we could go back, and, uh Tie some places together where you know we were right there crossing past but never met each other in California date actually used to date coach John Macy of UC Riverside's daughter. Katie, of course, calling games for UC Riverside for four years on the radio, including 1995 division to when they went all the way to the national championship in my first year, calling the games for the Highlanders, and they go to the National championship Division two in Louisville and place Southern Indiana and Bruce Pearl for the love of God. And there you go. So, uh, Wisconsin, Milwaukee was were Pearl went after that, And then, of course, went on to Tennessee and now at Auburn and kind of need to remember those days back in the day, But we bring on Coach show Claro coaches is not coaching as far as 18 per se, but he's still keeping up with helping out kids and coaching kids at different levels and coach first off. It's great to have you anybody that David Anita's ever introduce. Me to always solid basketball. Knowledge s somebody You know Most of the people just really enjoy the sport of basketball, not only at the collegiate level, but the other levels as well, Coach. It's great to have you and I know you're up there in Washington state now. Yeah, It's great up here. It's ah, just pouring down rain every single day. So you know, I'm not sure exactly how smart I really was for moving from beautiful sandwich of this little right Coach for 10 Years at Cal Poly. And we have a beautiful idea that we had moved back up the Northwest roller families, but it's it's the greatest place in the world to live for six months. And then the other six months, you got to go down there and visit Phoenix and L. A. And San Diego and Las Vegas. Get down there a little bit, too. You know, I was already go to Las Vegas for the march madness. Within the first year, I wouldn't have a team. I was already sit down there that every game and not have to worry about any anti Blair rules. And you know, covert comes and crushes the whole thing. But Katie, I tell you what we're all healthy and happy and kind of You know, readjusting our life will get in the work kids out. We just shut down the grate Northwest Seattle kind of shut down all the gym, So there's no kids working out now. We had a lot of kids in the gym. You know, faith number of kids scrimmaging a little bit, but three on three stuff and without being shut down. You know my heart little bit broken, but hey, looking good things right now we've got college basket starting Wednesday. My daughter's at San Diego State. And can you believe it? San Diego State and you feel they're gonna have a basketball game next Wednesday, so She can't go to class, but they're still playing basketball. So I e think that shows you how important that that pocketbook is in the in the in the world. No question, Coach. Let's go back a little bit of background of you because I know you did some coaching their Highline Community College. Puget Sound Seattle you before landing that job there at Cal Poly but let everybody know a little bit about your background growing up and how you decided to get into coaching college hoops. Well, crazy thing about my background is that I think I was coaching when I was about Eight or 10 years old people say Wait a second. Wait a second. I said, Well, you understand? It came from a family of 16. I'm one of one of 16 Children, Italian Catholics and crazy. Doubted the doctor. My mom stayed home and chased around and he basically we had to play basketball, Keep busy and stabbed trouble and stay out of the house. We had a big old outdoor court. Then we had indoor court inside an old barn. And we played a lot of hoops. And so I was trying to organize my younger brothers and sisters and do a team trying to beat my other brothers and sisters and we used to have the draft and it's just kind of those natural things. You know. You go. You go into college Junior college ball and went on. But any I basketball, you know, And that's it was acting Camp Arena That's his 35 years ago. 1986 and they had every team coming in and introducing all 32 teams at once. In one, Jim, Obviously, that's not gonna happen in Indiana. But The notion of having you know the experience I had as a small college player and getting a chance of work up over 25 years before I got the cow apologize. I did the high school level. With the high school coach and counselor. I was a junior college coach..

"Know when you talk to a Knicks fan you mention Bernard king right great there I'm like man I love you then you mention Reggie Miller and I'm like all men would you give me what poor John Starks gets pushed in the back what's going on here man I mean who like riverside poly's find is too and I ended up calling games ironically for UC riverside trace you know it was classic man and you do the broadcasting the color commentating so I remember was the best man so calmly games down the palm springs area I remember in fact if you were city George Gervin nephew Caleb Guerrier was plan there are key to a city but I end up getting the job for UC riverside basketball and they were division two in nineteen ninety five the year the UCLA wins the division one title and there I am call UC riverside division to know I had no clue on due to you know I grew up in Jersey and you know Saint Johns you know my great uncle you mention Bernard came my great uncle coach in Brooklyn for you know forty two years basketball baseball any coach Connie Hawkins and you know so many we I remember seeing you know Bernard King Albert king and all these great players from Brooklyn throughout the years of my uncle was coach my great uncle was coaching and I just remember saying like wow man this is this is just top of the line stuff but I really didn't know division two we knew Louie corner second St John's we knew seen hall because we were in north Jersey and I followed you know a lot of the D. one teams I used to love when you know he came on and watching park just chewing on the talent you know you get UCLA my dad loved John wooden and he was like you know I remember guys like Richard Washington and these guys are in Sidney wicks and just you know growing up watching these guys and I mean my dad just loved UCLA does that wouldn't Manny goes that now that the coat he goes there's great coaches but this guy is the greatest of them all and you know I remember you know in Walton and all these guys in of Alcindor who of course became Jabbar all those guys back in the day so here we are in palm springs and mark Roberts has is great company together in a you know covering all the football and all the basketball on T. on night T. I. K. E. S. Q. was the ABC affiliate there in the palm springs area but you know the Coachella valley's kind of spread out but all the schools the ten schools high schools from looking to was the new kid on the block but you know from Indio to could shell at a cathedral city palm desert palm springs they all knew each other and so it was kind of cool so we would do the games on Friday nights and then they play him again Saturday morning and it was like the number one Nielsen rated show in the Coachella Valley whatever was the football or basketball so mark Roberts gets the he's doing UC riverside last year's and he says Hey Katie man you gotta go upbeat coach John Macy I got the UC Irvine jobs these all have been like what he goes he goes yeah the editors gave me the job so he's all happy because he's got a division one job so I have no clue what the hell division two is very trace I go up there and I'm like alright this is great you know so I because Macy's I can you sell a because we got we got to get so mad sold I you know get get us on the air and I'm like so I sold a few ads got on there course I'm doing it for free so here's the thing I got this all and I'm commuting from palm springs up to riverside call on the games and I travel with the team when you know whatever they want on the road so nineteen ninety five they have this you know solid team but a couple guys get kicked off the team couple D. one transfers and a couple other guys academically ineligible anyway it's like seven or eight guys on this team and they end up going all the way to the national championship game on CBS TV as you know division to you got to get to that final in order to be on CBS TV and I remember giving Dick Stockton and since you talking UCLA and Myers given them the note and it was right before you see riverside played southern Indiana coach by none other than Bruce pearl who of course coaching over at Auburn Tennessee Wisconsin Milwaukee after that but did a great job but here's the classic trace I'm just telling you when you have passion and you love something so much as I know you love playing I know you loved coaching but I know you love the broadcasting part two so here's the thing I good I get up there to riverside people have no idea the car broke down so I had to jump on a bus from over off the ten freeway got off got on a bus and then it left me about eight miles away from where I needed to be over there off university and I got over there and I'm sweating stuff like get in the bathroom and I always leave early for the game but I get in there and I make it look on there I got this this big like old baseball Bagley campus bag and stuff with all the equipment set it all up ready to go call the game so I walk out tracing on get ready now I've got no car but I got to get to palm springs and it's pouring rain out and all these people are like Hey you need a ride you car where you parked awesome like almost all known down there no I'm good I I've got to I gotta go when I got a call my wife make sure let her know I'm on my way home and everything and see that and I just waited till everybody left trees and there I was and I get over off university and I go over to the side of the freeway on the ten freeway and I'm just trying to hitchhike back to palm springs and trace on telling you twenty these nights were not only is it raining it starts raining and then it gets cold and then the wind starts moving that read side side so I'm literally I'm soaked in Amman that I'm making sure I'm on the side of the freeway the entrance part and I and I just got my thumb out and I'm like it now I'm scared because it's like ten thirty at night and I got to go whatever forty miles down to palm springs twelve said this car stops and I'm just like oh god man please lord let this be somebody that can take me back to palm springs you know anywhere close and so the guy gets an eye sees got like the referee stripes is a guy that just finish call the game at riverside community college and he's like what the hell you do I go well my car broke down and I'm on my way back I just called the Highlander game at at the rec center this guy was so cool man that he ended up taking me all the way to palm springs to my house one twenty five miles out of his way which really fifty because they had to turn around go back and which is it just made me realize you know what sometimes when you love something the way that we do you know we do whatever it takes and I know you were like that as a player I know Colby was like that as a player and you really seem like here's a guy that changed his whole life to to just really put his faith and his family you know in front there and then become this great business guy that seem like everything you touch was turned into gold just the way you did on the core when he was playing and I know that's something that as an entrepreneur yourself you see that and is it so hard to understand somebody that's is so iconic like that is gonna.

"Twenty five year old Jamie Adams in thirty year old Justin atoms were newlyweds who lived in the suburbs of Oklahoma City so the pair were like your average you know. Oh mid twenties early thirties couple. They were trying to figure it out. They were parenting. Jamie is four kids that were aged between infant and seven years old there therefrom previous marriage and they were excitedly expecting their first child together in Jamie was around eight weeks pregnant so it was around December in the Christmas holidays were approaching. Jamie apparently loved Christmas. She loved decorating wrapping gift. Giving the works making cookies cookies Caroline Santa route off you name it. She leapt up so this couple had a lot to be excited about and Justin had it just returned home from basic training after enlisting with the National Guard is acts duties had not yet started so he would be home with his family through the holidays which is something they were are all super excited about so our story starts late night on December nine th two thousand eleven the top on the radio was we found love by Riana and Calvin Harris US and movies in the theater were tinker tailor soldier spy and young adults with Charlie Stern who left love her so it's three a m when Justin bangs on the door of his mother's house. Jamie never came home. I can't reach her. He says he's panicked and he tells you that Jamie went to the crest grocery store between ten and eleven. PM and then went to meet a friend and then she went radio silent now Jamie adjusted live on just as Mother's property pretty and just as Mother's name Tina Clark so the Mother Tina and the son Justin hop in the car and go to look for Jamie at at five am as they're rolling through the streets they spot the wife span and it's sitting empty in a local McDonald's parking lot and they look inside. There's no sign of Jamie. They call the cops as soon as they can and they're trying to keep their composure right and when the police get there are Justin is in a full blown panic these agitated and he's kind of urging them to hurry up. He's asking open. The van helped me. Blah Blah Blah and they're kind of put off by him and the officers are asking him questions and he's kind of being evasive and he essentially actually release the circumstances of the events of evening explaining that he can't find or rich's wife now for whatever reason something about justice demeanor was very off putting to the officers. There's maybe he was too pushy. Maybe abrasive or maybe he was just being suspicious. Whatever it was they did not take to him at all they were very apprehensive of him and they asked for proof that the vehicle even belong to him in order to give him access to his wife's fan and this is for something for whatever reason he was unable to prove or provide to them and they didn't let him into Jamie's car and it was left there and later impounded by the police so the police accompanied Justin home and they ended up taking a missing persons report and when the police asked just in which friend his wife had gone to see he didn't have an answer and kind of grays over the question and was just generally super avoidance to them about that subject but he did make sure to punctuate the fact that Jamie was pregnant and she'd also take in her phone and Dan Laptop with her when she left that night he said that he had last heard from her when she texted him from the Fast Food Restaurant around twelve forty five in the morning and and when the police leave Justin Jamie's they try to encourage him to stay calm. Stay hopeful that she'll turn up. There could be reasonable reasonable explanation for all this right but just an antena just knew that something wasn't right right so after the missing persons report is taken. Justin and Tina go home and they the police. GonNa say all right. We'll be in touch. You know. Hopefully you hear from her. Whatever but two days slowly tick by and there's still no sign of Jamie Who has four children at home? It is seven day weeks pregnant so the investigation which probably wasn't doing anything thing yet because it was two days she's an adult there wasn't any signs of foul play was about to enter into kind of super speed and it was really going to catch their interest because two days later. Justin walked back into the police station went to the detectives who took the original report and said that he hadn't been truthful with them when he made the initial missing persons this report the police aren't totally shocked because they could tell that he was being evasive in avoidance during their initial contact with him so he tells them that he said the whole story about. Jimmy going to the grocery store and meeting. A friend was not true. It was a lie which was really heading out to do. The night was meet the client for sex sex. Jamie was a sex worker and his gut instinct was to lie to them in an effort to protect her and I'm sure on some level for checked himself not only from the potential Joel legal retribution but also didn't want police to be judgmental of his wife or anyone else for that matter so as it turns out the fact that Jamie had dabbled in sex work wasn't a total shock to either Justin or his mother Tina in fact many years back Tina had worked in law enforcement and she had been the one to tell her son to omit the fact that she was a sex worker to the police when he was making the missing persons report because she said that if the cops new gene was a sex worker they wouldn't put forth any effort effort to find her. That's the reason why he said that's why I lied. that's why. I didn't tell you the truth and it's true nature. It's true it's it's very unfortunate but it's smart that his mom would have told her that because if he was like. Oh Yeah my wife's sex worker. They could have very well been uh-huh well then she a high risk job John Her. That's and I think the setting in this case I think the fact that it's the suburbs of Oklahoma Ma is something that we have to remind ourselves of throughout this episode. It's like half of this is going to be because they want to solve the case in half of it. Is this judgmental sort of like elitist attitude about this whole thing emanates throughout so here's what Justin Austin tells the police he says that that night Jamie had actually gone to a motel in Norman to meet a client that she met on craigslist and which do is advertise advertiser services as a massage therapist but Justin said he also that she also engaged in sex work the final text that just received that night that Jamie went missing was that she was meeting another client just before midnight on December ninth at the McDonald's in Midwest city which is where van was found right and he then received one more text from her saying that the client never showed up and that was the last he heard from her. "It doesn't want to go back and be an John Macy's scoring goals. Does and Renault was no. At Real Madrid anymore. I don't think he sees himself as somebody who's trotting around the bend the bear, the problem is they've had a whole host the segment on us money quickly got. No coaching your plus one hundred million for neymar, that's I think that's the logical solution and boss, ably shoots everybody. All round you can argue about the cash a little more little less gaps quickly. Again, we're obviously some ising mentally would be he'd be okay. Co it's a constant Dunia. I think so I, I don't see any reason why why he wouldn't be. I mean he's had his years outside of Mesi shadow. He goes back mess. He's older. And, you know, that, that is a path out if indeed he wants to go. Maybe we'll come back and say, I'm sorry, Mr. ally, I'm going to work harder and be better. And, and we're going to go and we're gonna win the champions Aikman Imbaba together. Well, I think it goes by Aleph you left to the shadow of mass, as how these couple of years the shot, he goes Bach Massey's older, but still in the shadow of Massi massillon. I still belt around messing that will not be built around name, and tell Leo. Messi leaves Okla. Yes, Craig, Greg. It's a lot less. It's a lot less damaging psychologically to be in the shadow of one of the greatest players in the history of humanity and Lionel Messi, then to be in the shadow of a guy who might become one of the greatest ever. But for now is still a twenty year old kid, and that is a direction in which he's hiding at PS G within bumping. And of course that was emphasized. It wasn't a in view as well accolades coming out and saying, Bobby, we'll two hundred percent be that next season gap. Yeah. And I think about by himself has sort of said that, you know, he he still thinks he's very young. He's not in a rush to go anywhere. I think you look at potential suitors potential destinations raw Madrid of obviously made a different choice. Withdrawal veg. They're going to get another year out of out of Benza Ma. "Couldn't throw the football great day, though, as far as Kiara graduating and you know, she's just a special kid, and I know your parents feel that way about you. But she somebody that's more or less, you know, her mom myself weeding graduate college. I did the old like on the application, some college, you know, put that in there, you know, JC college Mesa junior college outside of San Diego. Got a few more, you know, units when I was on the aircraft carrier in the navy from south western Texas, State or something. Some class, I took on, you know, when I was out at sea or whatever, but never finished up. So there were a lot of things as Kiara getting into taking all these honors classes I had no clue. I'm like, you know, like parents, like, hey, if you need any help, you know, help you out, you know, by the time she's in ninth grade. Look, I can't freak and help you know what the hell you're studying unless it has to do a sports, you know. And she like she goes, but that's okay because, you know, more about most know the most people. No about sports and stuff. Like so that's why when I'm watching jeopardy and this James holes, our chi-. How do you even learn that much? This guy's the most amazing and to top it off. He's sports. Gambling guy here in Vegas. And I love them. Because now he's got Alex trebek's to where when he's gone, y'all bet to dimes it's great which for you folks out there once it terminology, a dime is thousand dollars. So on his daily double the other night, it's like a two dimes that's two thousand Alex trebek's like I know because it's been twenty five days in a row now that he's one. Now I didn't see this tonight. So don't ruin it for me because I tape them on I go home. And I watched jeopardy, although this one may not be seen to the wee hours of the morning because Christina's in town. You know my wife lives in Phoenix made it up here for Cristina's graduation. But one of these great days as far as going to the Thomas and Mack taking in the event Silverado high school. So all the schools are transitioning in and out as they alternate one one schools graduating Thomas and Mack, the other one graduating Cox pavilion, right next door. And then they're alternating going in and out and it was well, done very well. Choreographed by the parking lot attendants, who had really no practice unless they worked last year, but very smooth got in and out thought it was great. Now. Here's the cool thing Kyar has been as far as journalism. She's been writing school newspapers since she's a freshman and it's Kiara, and I got her name from the lion. King. Now, the initial name that I came up with an minimum been divorced, fifteen years, but we're very close. And we did everything to raise Chiara. She was our priority, but I carry my accent. So we're trying to think of names, Karen's pregnant, I like what about Roxanne Roxanne as cool name, you know, because I'm from. Jersey and I was like she goes rock, San he's think. No. And she's thinking of the song. Police and stuff. And just she's not some Hooker this, and I'm like, oh, my God, I go, that's not I go, you know, Roxie and of course, with Roxy Bernstein. I mean she's like, no, that's out. No roxanne. And I'm like, okay. So I was back in jersey and watching Lion King with nieces and nephews. And so, at the end of the first Lion King holds up the little lion. Cub. And everybody thinks okay. That's the one that's going to take over the jungle little boy and stuff. No little girl Kiara. K. I A, R A. And so. And then I always liked the name amber. So I came up with Kiara amber. It's probably the last thing that my ex wife actually agreed with me on before he ended up getting divorced, go. What about Kiara? She goes, oh, I like that. I like that name, and I told her where I got it. I said how about amber Kiara, amber? She goes, that's, that's, that's a keeper. So that was QR amber. So but it's without a p t h on us on. So no cure is one proud. Ten awards journalism editing all the stuff over the last three years review journal, and you would think you know, they have editors everything there, but they're announcing winners, and I understand it's Thomson with no p but I mean Kiara, I've never seen so many people butcher that name Kiara. Here's what ki- DRA key. There's not even a freaking d in there. Tyra. I mean everything nobody ever got it right Kiara. Right. And then Thompson. Because there's no p they're like, Kijima Thomas. And so it's spelt right on the big project thing. But they're, they're butchering. So when she got her seven awards from journalism class this year that they actually give her an eighth one and a goofed on her. And they put key drew Thompson with a, you know, to make to have a little bit of fun. So we were yes, we had to get. So I had actually called silver auto high school, and I said, can I get in touch with the person that's going to do the announcing of the kids names, when they graduate at Thomas and Mack, I said, you know, not for nothing but I'm just hoping maybe this one time if I- phonetically spell it out and stuff. Maybe they do that beforehand. I would think, so I leave a message ladies real close has the guy guy. Clothes back says, look, it's the guy that retired last year. He taught here, eleven years came over from California, but he's really good on names. So I said, all right. Great turns out today Kyar is backstage, but I had called and I'm just praying. I'm saying okay now they have to people that are alternating agai a lady just hoping I get a call from Kiara right before they're about to start the graduation. She's in the back. And she says, Dan, do you remember a coach Mak, Mr. MAC from cathedral city, which is a high school right outside of Palm Springs, California? And back in the nineties, I, I lived in Palm Springs for seven years, but Mark Roberts who used to call you see your basketball for a long time, Mark, and I did the Cottrell valley game of the week it was marks company. I sent him in some little butcher tapes that I did myself. But he said, all right. Come down meet me and this was. On TV, and he ended up giving me a gig there. And then when he was off calling games, I would be the anchor and we'd have some other guys. Good pal. Josh Allen mother's down there in the valley. The cool thing about catella valleys. It's spread out. So you have Palm Springs palm desert cathedral city, which they call cat city leukaemia, which is a really nice little routine. Great golfing, all around there, but it's cool because the schools about ten of them high schools Indio ca valley, they're all kind of separated from the rest of California. So it was a big time thing, we would call the Friday night football game and they play it back Saturday on the ABC affiliate K, S Q on forget. And it was the number one Nielsen rated show almost every week during the fall, because all the kids would watch it because they and, you know, and we would alternate around, and we would make sure that every school was at least inclusive, at least once. And so it became that place that you know, that I really got a lot of my broadcasting. Experience because you can go to school like you went to school. But until they give you the, on the job training, which you had some there with Nebraska, but until they give you that it's great to have that piece of paper, but you still have to have some as well. Have you do you have any experience? I know I don't have experience, but I have a degree. But if you give me experience, then I'll have experienced because all be really good. Sorry. We can't hire you don't have experienced but market me that chance. And then the best was he ends up getting the job for UC Irvine Daska ball, at that time, he's calling division to UC riverside, China, they really follow division, too. But he goes, he goes KT, you've got to go up and you gotta make coach John Macy division to he goes. You'll love it. Man's great great program. I'm like, man. Come on now. I go very he was, I got the UC Irvine job. And I'm gonna take it. I'm like, okay, so I ended up going up there me coach John Macy, nineteen ninety-five my first year calling UC riverside basketball. They go all the way the national championship game against Bruce, Pearl in southern Indiana, and Louisville, like most. Unreal story for guys got booted off the team. The chemistry on his teams like the sixty nine Knicks. It was phenomenal. Meanwhile. Robert first year UC Irvine division one. He's all fired up one win twenty five losses under rod Baker. So I'm off to national championship. I get get like, you know, these phone call like you lucky son of a gun, and it wasn't that nice the Expos are flying. Well anyway, at that time, we really covered the football, but then more started doing a couple of the high school basketball games in the bigger games will George Gervin the iceman from San Antonio days. His nephew Caleb, Gurban was really, really good on cat city cathedral city. So we followed the running, I think it was ninety seven nineteen Ninety-seven that they made a run to the state championship at their level and played at the pond. It was called upon back then it's the Honda center now over there in Anaheim, where the ducks by and, you know, I'm calling games and I'm following him around as they made it through this little playoff run through the to try and get to, you know, through the states. And so one of the games I think it was in bar sto, but the parents couldn't make it was like a week day. So I'm going to call it back on radio back, so they can it in cathedral city. Right. So I get there, Danny, and, you know, their stories that you'll be able to tell now a lot of things are pretty well cemented as far as getting on the air and whatnot. But I couldn't get on the air because there was no is the hook up. There was something messed up. So I had the equipment that market but there was nothing I can do I couldn't broadcast the game. So I'm like, oh my God. I came out here for nothing. These parents are wait. I did the whole game on a telephone on a landline. Telephone I called the game. I dialed back they've potted it up. And that's so this guy dister MAC after a little after that he ends up moving here to, to Vegas valley. He teaches at Silverado high school for eleven years. He retires last year. But he enjoys announcing the names. So he comes back to announce the names. So he goes up to Kiara, you know, he saw the name Thompsons say he said, wait, he goes, you're not the daughter of Ken Thompson sports X radio serrate right there Kiara sweat, and going on. What it my dad do now. She's not even thinking, like that's my dad. Yeah. What a great guys the best now. She's going on. What happened the last time someone asked her that probably wasn't? Right. Probably was. And so he told her the story because your dad paid his dues. He actually called a high school basketball in the whole game on the landline. Telephone..

"A three nothing lead for the golden gophers over the hated badgers from Wisconsin were at the end of one period of play at Minnesota really exploded offensively there, and I'll tell you. I think we're going to have an explosive interview intervention here. Our first mercy. The author of the book Minnesota made me Pat, welcome aboard here for thanks for having me. I counted thirty six names in here. Tales about people either born a really who were made in Minnesota sports figures. Give us the Genesis of the book how to get started. Yeah. Got started because the book company, it wasn't my idea the book publisher northstar, your store dishes cave. They were interested in having somebody puts us together. It's a total thirty eight folks, I've we call them sports figures. It's. Thirty two who I interviewed myself in six who since passed away that I put together all the research. Basically, it's all these folks who either were born and raised here or made Minnesota their home, and what about growing up here living here, shape them is Ashley some people named the hockey names that are in the book that we want to ignore others. But off the top of my head. Well, let's see we start with her Brooks who I think so. The morning. We're going to have stories about. Lou Lou nannies in there. Zaka j p Parise Aaron there Natalie Darwich, Krissy, Wendell Boucher. Eight or nine and I'm gonna I'm sorry. I'm getting a couple of years Marvin Gaye more. And of course in Mattie Rudy. Yeah. G G. Matty, gold medalist from the US Olympic team. When I when I started reading, and I read your introduction about how you moved here in two thousand and I thought, oh, this is gonna sound like an outsider writing a book does not as as me about what the parks that. I've read and here Pat is that it's not just the story about the players. Flavor for the community that they were brought up in life was like by by chance I happen to start with Henri Bouchet and g g Marvin. And all of a sudden started learning more about Warren ruled than I thought I was gonna learn about in this book. He did a great job of researching where they came from. And what their lives were like growing up in this state. Thanks, frank. That was that was what I was trying to do. I was I wanted to give folks because we wanted we didn't just want to do like ten twins and ten white. You know, we wanted to we wanted to do with a lot of different sports men and women a lot of different backgrounds. A lot of different parts of the state. There are folks that have been awarded more road is is ground central for hockey in the state of several towns. Cradles of hockey as it were. It would be it would be another. And so I was trying to do. I mean, I I was fascinated by by Henry story behind wrote. That's that's an awesome story. Henry Wally, you know. Henry quite well. Yeah. Yeah. To sixteen is the emails. The matter of fact, just the history he has in the state is incredible. I was amazed again as as an outsider who's now made Minnesota is home. I was just fascinated by by Hal outstanding high school player was for man. I wish I had lived here to see it because just two stories that he told you should look at the numbers. I have a hard enough time comprehensive comprehending. What's John Macy's for the gophers? And then to see what Henry did in high school. It's mind boss. Patrick police it or not we're out of time already. I mean, folks, it's a great read Minnesota made me. Brick and mortar place noble. They they they have it pretty much every one of the twin cities if if your local Barnes and noble doesn't have it asked him order it. I had a friend of mine in New York asked him the order, and they said that outdoor out to I will. It's a fun read, and it's a historic and and just wonderful. Congratulations. Thanks did. It'll be a great week to finish reading this. It'll be cold enough. Thank you. Thanks so much. Thank you pass, though, I leading three nothing over Wisconsin. "You hear frequently say defend without fouling. When is a foul. Okay. Thousand you can live with. Well, I think if if a guy's in the right position, and maybe it's a block charged call and he's really trying to keep them all in front of them. But really fouling is a mistake. Foul jump shooter. Put the guy who line teams closer to the bonus. You know, reaching and silly fouls. They're going to be times where he'll fouls or call just because of hard play. You know, you're trying to physically block somebody out or whatever the case is now live with those. But it's the undisciplined things jumping on a shot fake fouling jump shooter things like that. We have to control what we can. You talk about flow. What makes for good flow? Well for us. It's not dribbling the ball back out and calling a set play. If we're in our on our break, you know, whether a team has scored or they didn't score. And and we're pushing it down the floor. We want to continue to play and not necessarily have our point guard or anybody dribble the ball back out. And now the defense and chance to rest and reset. So we saw one of slow into whatever offense. You know? We know that we're supposed to be flowing into Nicholson coming off their best here in many years, but they lost all those players. They also evident coats so and they will play one game. So do you have much of a read on? I do they're probably going to have a very similar style. And they've had in years past they wanna defensively pressure. Extend their defense to the full court may see running John Macy's and traffic. We're gonna have to be really strong with the ball offensively. Other led by their guards on it. A couple of guys the other night against Mississippi college that had twenty eight and twenty so I think they shot twenty nine threes. So we've got to be a team that the guards the three point line both in transition and the half court. Yeah, they do. They do anything to set up individual threes are just come within the flow, and a gal let fly guys have a lot of freedom on their team. At least from what I've seen on on video certainly the game has turned into a lot of pick and roll they don't really involve their role man a whole lot that guys coming off and looking into Jack shot. So we have to make sure that you know, we can test those threes and limited to one shot. Your walk owns are very involved in your practices. Do you foresee them being? Significant factors in game sold. Occasion. I mean, Joe Griffin is done a terrific job this year. I would be very comfortable sticking Joe in in certain circumstances. He's a very good defender. He understands our system and Jacob reading you say a phenomenal shooter. And although athletically, maybe not at this level. Certainly I q is and skill wise. He s. A little bit from will who has to sit out. And then why battles tough freshmen who? I think in time can help us on the floor. I don't know if they know this what Jacob reading has never missed a shot game. I do know that I do know that three for three from my understanding, and I forget the number but had missed the free throw either. So I'll tell you when you watch him shoot. And you can see why it's not lucky to coming in. Thank you coach. We'll be back. This is Carla basketball from learfield. Okay. Shirt socks seeds all set. The difference between six point nine nine and seven is mathematically small, but psychologically it looms larger like one day. You're thirty nine years old living your life. And the next day. You're forty hiding in a closet with a bottle of wine getting through very sensitive. Eastwood, preside, the ageless trade policy. Professor at Cornell says crossing the seven Yuan threshold on its own shouldn't be a big deal. But as a round number it'll get attention. Their big concerns are number one market freaking out and look to the Trump administration freaking out. Let's take those one at a time. I the market freakout as described by Patrick show Vanik, he's chief strategist at Silvercrest asset management. So for China. There's an immediate concern of money just picks up and leaves the country never to be seen again. In other words, people see the UN losing value and decide to put their money in more stable is that in turn causes the UN to lose more value. You know, it's it's just purely psychological, but it's also psychology matters when you're talking about people's behavior, and then there's the White House reaction. The Trump administration is trying to make Chinese goods more expensive by imposing a bunch of tariffs. But falling currency makes them cheaper. Scott. Kennedy is a China expert at the center for strategic and international studies. My guess is that there's a bunch of folks in the Trump administration who see the currency moving past seven is an opportunity to raise the temperature on China to threaten them to gain more leverage in the overall conversation about our commercial relationship. Kennedy says the Trump administration is watching China's currency, very carefully and could decide more tariffs are needed to offset the effects of a falling UN. I'm Tracey Samuelson for marketplace. She got right falling you in for the fans of local sports among you moving on now this item from the Wall Street Journal and CNBC both are reporting that the Walt Disney company is putting twenty two of its regional sports networks up for sale could be the channel bringing you your local hockey team or college ball. All of some type more and more viewers are cutting cable from their media diets as we know, but this sale is still attracting plenty of attention from a wide variety of would be buyers. Marketplace's Emma Jacobs explains why private equity firms local teams tech companies even the new iterations of FOX which sold these networks to Disney all come up potential bidders for one or all of the regional broadcasters valued at around twenty billion dollars. That's because sports are pretty much the last events people still sit down to watch live as they happen. Andrew Brandt is director of the Mouride center for sports law at Villanova. He says cable is not what it was. But within cable, this is your best option. Each league has dozens of games. That's a whole lot of evenings of live content for enthusiastic fans and Lieber president of L HD Inc..

"I just thought, Gavin, pick up one of these rooster brew beers and it was about to open it important and I kept pointing to it so he could look at it and I've never seen someone more confused in all his life. Yeah. How did we get that? Although, you know, but this, yeah, clearly doesn't follow us on Instagram. Apparently not. We went to the Winterberg this morning. We made this show this Bernie and I we went in, we broke in and we started the machines by Alison beer works. Austin beer works previously made an appearance on this podcast with one of their fine products. When we got a ninety. Nine pack of beer. Yes. So that was nine. Nine hundred ninety nine pack because if it was one hundred one would stick out right. I guess you could have four rows at twenty five, but they went for three of thirty three rookie mistake. Why would you. But it was funny we were when we were up there. They were talking about the ninety nine pack today, and they said the intentionally designed that packaging to be dumb. They're like we wanna make the dumbest gimmicky most promotional product possible. So I said, the first designer came back with like a cube, and they're like, no, this is too is you can actually pick this up Gary this. So then they knew they settled on this design and the designer still tried to put like handholds on it. So you can pick it up and they're like, no, the handle inconvenient places they wanted you to go with friends. It's like, so you have to have two people or it's like super unwieldy and awkward. If it's one person can put on your shoulder basically about, like hug it like a tree, I would push out full cans and then put it over my head and wear it like. What do you mean like a big toll thing down. Down from the center and Bendit. Do you remember how booking heavy that thing was. Beers. I think a thing it was a beef after four pack. For those and then three more beers street really put it over the ad. Yeah. Yeah, it's, it's, it's really heavy. It's a, it's cool. I feel like I remember seeing them make beer. I feel like they started not that long ago. Selleck seven or eight years ago. And I felt like I'd see you can every now and then now I feel like it's everywhere in Austin in every bar and Austin definitely taken off. I like him. So it's good to it's good to work with them for this. Is it a like a big bucket lists thing for you to have your own beer? I don't know about bucket list. I, it was. It was something I always thought would be cool if it happened and we were able to do it. I didn't realize until right now. It's got that same mural like the red mural painted on the Artioli studio. Signs on the side of stage five, the pretty, oh, yeah, it looks really nice coming in here. Really does. Yeah. Like that old faded yellow Dory of sure you've seen it in our going around making this place look good. That's John Mace. And his team and his team and the whole, the whole facilities like the John Macy's an idea, it's not a person that, yeah, it's an everything all at once except for the Tiki books fail. Yeah. They have a list on the side of the departments that are in this building. I mean, that's gonna change in like a day. Interchangeable. This goes from, oh. Technology do not painted. I guarantee it. Okay. Yeah, we're working on that potentially because we're in stage five stage to, but fifty percent of stage four. And it looks like we might be taken over states to refer a little bit too for some production stuff. Nice stage seven. That's the armory. Yeah, that one is missing. To call it a stage. Is that in the blood fest trailer, where did you see it. So much stuff from blood fest, Berta room intro. That's what I was just thinking every time I see a hallway from that building. I instantly recognized the hallway that Ellis runs down right in. That's in the trailer in the trailer. Yeah. Yeah, it. It could be a hospital, a school, a military base. It's like it's very what interchangeable, I guess for different locations, very generic. She and rundown very dangerous for Steph to you because it's actually haunted. I think it'd be I can't even believe blame was even considering drinking that liquid..
