"I see two major trends over the nfl in a big picture since one of them the new quarterbacks now that's gonna be stafford and the rookies in the situations that matter i offer whatever it's not even ignore that he's even though he played pretty well i'd say and then we'll go to. After that is tomlin. Carol peyton and the odor coaches that are not analytics darlings having great performances least some people thought pittsburgh winning seven point dog was good. But let's start with stafford and sunday night football. Yeah was sunday night. Football debut of matt stafford a rams quarterback and he did not disappoint twenty of twenty six three twenty one in the air three touchdowns all rams as they get a thirty four fourteen win at home. There has been debate about stafford. And what. I wanna do is framed the debate as in. Where was the dispute by definition. I debate it means. There is a disagreement. there's a dispute. so where was dispute. I would say the following asia. You can tell me if you agree that the thought was staff. Stafford has all the physical skills number one pick and in most situations. He's going to play. Well he's gonna play tough. He plays hurt. But there's something about him that he won't he won't take that log or he's unable to muster a winning perspective a winning mentality a culture of winning and the yeah. Detroit made a lot of mistakes but over all those years especially when you have one of the greatest receivers magnetron of all time playing with you. It's hard to say you didn't have any playmakers so now take. Why didn't detroit do better. That seems to be the debate. The detractors all acknowledges talent stafford but they he's not a winner and on the other side they say. Oh no he's a winner. Just give him a chance. Would you say that's the recap and where do you come down on. I come down on. It's hard to say that he never had helped because he did have a great wide receiver an all time. Great but the the teams that were built around him. The coaches that were put around him were less than desirable. And that's a poorly run organization. And i think there's we're looking at now. A chance for matt stafford to be a player in a well run organization can help a guy. So here's the question. Though should with. Tom brady was in detroit where he have overcome that. If tom brady were in detroit he wouldn't be tom brady right now. But that's not the question. The question is what do you have one super bowl appearance. No no so. The dysfunction in detroi- is so significant that the greatest player of all time couldn't have even made a super bowl. I believe so jonas. Your thoughts on that. I agree that he's also got a dysfunctional organization around him in detroit. I don't think tom brady to. Aj's point is tom brady. I do think there's real dysfunction there. I also agree that it's a little bit overstated that he had nothing to work with with calvin johnson. You look at the wide receiver core yet a couple years ago whether it was kenny golladay or marvin jones. Golden tate had really good years. There like there's been talent there but there just seems to be this revolving door of coaches. Jim caldwell i thought did a really good job and stafford got them to the playoffs. I think three times during his time there. They just never were able to advance past that point. And you know aaron rodgers in the same division as you. I don't think helps matters much as well. You could also say no one's ever looked at the lions when stafford was there and said boy matt stafford the reason the lions are no good. Let's put up numbers that's the thing is if the was very careful to frame the debate. I'm not saying anyone thought he was bad. It was either a ton of talent but something in the intangibles missing or ton of talent has the intangibles but the team kept him down. That's the only reasonable the bay. No one's saying he's not any good. How did tom brady changed. Tampa bay culture. Because i would make the case that the hour before tampa bay was tom. Brady's destination if we would have ranked the worst franchises in the nfl tampa bay would have been on the list of three or four. Ooh right i mean jones. I mean would you put tampa bay right before that roster wise. I think they were a top half the team as far as dysfunction. Yeah yeah yeah. Because i mean. I don't think that they'd they'd been to the playoffs. One time since that super bowl. And i think that was the game that chris. Simms suffered the punctured lung or whatever the injury was but yeah they had not they had not been able to figure it out and jameis winston was the number one pick that never panned out the way they wanted it to and i would make the point because if you get a super bowl. That's that's good. Obviously but if you look at them from seventy six when they went. Oh and fourteen which i tend to remember. I'm john mackay was the coach former. Usc coach of our call and the reality is they had. What the super bowl and do they even make a conference. I guess did make conference final seventy nine against the rams which is amazing. It was seventy six. They came in vents fair gama. See anything around the great steeler teams. I remember all the details but the fact is the war. Many good years out of forty years. I mean it's the lions the browns and they were tampa's in man that discussion. And would i would say to. Jones says point of saying well. The roster was great. But isn't the premise. Here is dysfunction. Trump's talent so and the fact that roster went seven and nine kind of speaks to that right. Yeah and and. I think i think the thought there was when you fired. Lovey smith. they brought in dirk cutter. They thought okay. Well what we want to continue. The continuity with james winston any just never progress and him throwing that many interception. I wonder what that team would have been like. Had heathrow thrown half the amount of interceptions that he did like. I wonder what they're where they would have stacked up. But tom brady going there. You can't argue with the fact that he changed a culture. There's something different about that team now. As opposed to win jameis. Winston was there. We are straight out of jones knocks in research. Pregame.com mackenzie rivers. Are you clear your throat. With towards the mike god declares throw to get the attention to cough. Make sure you turn it on. I mckenzie river. I any time. I think to give him extra. My time i regret go had mackenzie. Matthew stafford is sixty or greater. Qbr sixty five on average. The last two years with detroit only did that to out of his first ten years. So my theory is everybody's talking about his career. Have we considered that. He's gotten a lot better and his career as a whole isn't representative of what he is right now. All right so the one of those two years an eight game season right for him. Yes and his best. Qbr ever that game season seventy one. Yeah because when you have a handful of games it's easier to have an extreme result was were you going to mention that.

"Quarterbacks trent shells very hard this is the sean salisbury show tried sportstalk seven ninety for matt who called in a couple of other things about being a coach in this day and age. Of how much more difficult it is than just simply he got to show up. You're not that it wasn't a hard deal in john mackay's bear bryant's even later even with john robinson and my team in the eighties. All those things. I mentioned with the name image and likeness and all the all the money and all the things that go on in recruiting. Let's not forget the coaches now have to have to embrace and deal with different people's approach to social justice or injustice and they also have to deal with social media when i played in hamlet. We weren't twitter. Have social media that influences and influencers and instagram. All the didn't have that so they've got to manage. What kid and now they all have programs that are going to have somebody in the program your name image and likeness coordinator to make sure you're overseeing the program who's doing what when it's scheduled. How does it fit in with spring. Practice and the kid's class schedule is going to affect their academics. Because they're more strapped now than they've ever been in a coach oversee that to keep a kid eligible or on course to graduate and that part and they also have the social media coordinator there watching high school recruits. They watch everything they do. That's why guys lose scholarships so yes. There's never been a tough time to be a coach in college football or college sports period and quite frankly they're getting paid. It's pretty difficult to be a player as well. So all that matters and back to this. Now this jumping back in. And we'll get to tyler's ten second but i wanna finish part of this conversation. Mc you were talking about getting in the nfc in recruiting sec and recruiting..

"Of the days that day. Here comes that what status? There was a sneaky remark by Nick Saban after a little too close for comfort win over old Miss 63 48 over the weekend, and Nick Saban said it seemed like everything we did They had an answer for. I'm not sure if they had our signals or what. But that's not anything unusual. It seemed like any time we called something they had the best thing they could call against it. They had a really good plan. Well. Lane Kiffin debunk Nick Saban's theory. If you understand tempo signals wouldn't help us, Kiffin said. We call the play basically, before the last plays even over before they mark the ball. We call our play. Then we scrambled to get their play called and then they're just trying to get their guys lined up. It wouldn't do us any good. By the time somebody would relay that to us were already snapping the ball. Kevin says he's never known Saban's defensive signals even when he was savings offensive coordinator from 2014 to 2016. Um The linebacker for Alabama, Dylan Moses was asked if old message stolen the Crimson tide signals in, Moses replied. Definitely I definitely D'oh. So if they did, it's on Alabama. Change your signals. It's not illegal to do it is, Kevin said. People do it. People do it all the time. It's using people that play slower people steal our signals all the time. Yep. Oh, Big mistake here by laying Kip and he should And what asked. Do you guys know the signals? Were you still taking signals Should said Yep. And then just throws a big wrench into Alabama's plans for the upcoming week. Get their head Chris in Maryland. Hey, Chris, what's on your mind today? Hey, Dad, what's going on here? But A another soul crushing night watching the Chargers some kind of a question, And I know I have a question on that note. So It seems to me like this has been going on for 10 plus years. And it's now like institutional. Can you just talk a little bit from your experience about a team? It doesn't matter whether it's basketball baseball, whatever that, like. I had to go through some sort of like institutional change to become a winning franchise and what what they were required to do to make that happen. Well, I think the Patriots did that member when Victor Km was the owner. You know that was in the late nineties. Maybe, and you needed to change at the top, and you got it. Um I'm sure they're Numerous one's McLovin, Chicago Cubs. Yeah, you changed owners Chip, and then you brought in Theo Epstein. You know, the Cubs didn't try to compete for a long time. Financially. It just didn't feel like like they were comfortable. They sold out they had, you know, W g en scene all over the country. And yet, Harry Carey. We had a couple of stars. You know, you have Mark Grace. You have rhino. You have Sammy Sosa. Rick Sutcliffe. Like he had just enough. You have the great atmosphere there. And then all of a sudden, I think the Cubs go Shouldn't we try to win a World Series here? How do we do that? Uh, I don't know. When the White Sox won, I thought that's when the bell would go off and go. Hey, White Sox won one. They did. I didn't notice that. Trying to think Who else? Club, the team they paid last night. The states were laughing Stock for long, Tom Benson, and then and then I remember the bucks when I was a kid, that bottle were friends, You know, that was Hugh Culverhouse. Was the owner. But he brought in John Mackay legendary Hall of Fame coach and, Ah John Mackay had great quotes Hey, was passed after a loss. I'm paraphrasing and he was asked. What do you think of your team's execution? And he says, I'm all for it. I love that. Yeah, I'm all for Ah. Eric in Virginia. Herrick, what's on your mind today? Hey, two things, then one with that Alex Smith interview. That was great. I'm wondering what is the greater miracle him coming back or the Redskins actually being competitive. It's some point. What would be the greater miracle? They're probably the Redskins being competitive. But on the basketball front with LeBron James, I'm wondering if he's not being seen as great as Jordan. Because he hasn't changed the game like Jordan did from a play standpoint, from where Jordan took the game, and from a merchandise standpoint, what are your thoughts? Yeah, I mean, you know, the Jordan had this 10 part documentary, and that was really strategically. Because you know, here's LeBron with Lakers, their favorites co favorites to win the title, and it just felt like now, Michael was ready to do this 10 part documentary. And then we're going to drop it this past year. And you know if there was any chance for LeBron To have you come up for air and say I'm right there with you. You know, Michael, basically no suffocated that because you gave that whole new generation. That has bought into LeBron. Maybe being on equal footing. Is Jordan. Now all of a sudden, they're watching this going. Wait a minute. I didn't know anything about this. I knew he won six titles. I didn't know how he won those titles and who he was in his personality. But it just you know, it doesn't matter. LeBron is never going to be greater than Michael Jordan and people's minds. It's not gonna happen. It doesn't matter if you're over the age of 40. It's not gonna happen. Now I'm open minded to it, but that's because my job is to be open minded to it. No, LeBron will have the greatest resume in N BA history. In my opinion, it's all said and done now, I might not be the best player. You can't argue with what he has done. Longevity wise. And at this Michael was ready to bow out of basketball. He was exhausted. And here's LeBron at 35. He reinvented himself lead the league in assists. And he's still the best player in the game. That's why when people talk about all the Greek free can I said LeBron is still the best plan again. You know, Luca this or you know, throw in. Whoever you want to. LeBron is still the best player in the game. At 35. 243 full seasons of playoff basketball. High end It's like when Kawhi Leonard he's averaging close to a triple.

"I love it up with this right along with you tonight. 10 P.m., But our football report brought to solve right Southpoint Hotel casino in Las Vegas about a chocolate roll right along, Get it. The Trojan football. What you thought. So What about Reggie Bush? Big getting back on campus? It's been a long time about 10 years. Wilco's first thing I'd like to say is, uh, washing college football today and seeing the traditional Rivalry games Oklahoma, Texas, Alabama Ole Miss Texas State in Florida. Great to see uniforms that you recognize. And for me, the cardinal with gold is words that I love The fact that USC does what they do in regards to cardinal and gold. And let's start from there because I think that represents What we know about USC football Over the years, he Bush he calls himself the president. That was the nickname I believe they carry. Colbert gave him was back on campus. Not sure if it was being filmed. For Fox Pridie, which, of course on November 7th. Their big Saturday broadcast will showcase USC and I'm sure there was a camera crew where Reggie goes, especially with us. She is doing that. But Back on campus. And as I mentioned to you, the thing that will always remember the bridge from this year's team Marquis step. Uh, now, Ah, factor in this offense last year was his first year playing in that game in his youth on scoring. In the tunnel and zone and then walking up as Reggie Bush was exalting and handing him the football. I think that was probably one of the better moments in USC football in a few years. It really was Jack. I know you remembered as faras handing the football and what I remember him, as is the official running down and given him a flag for celebration. I said, Oh, my goodness. How could you say that? Here's Ah! Kids that idolize Reggie Bush ran really didn't go towards and they were just happened to be standing right there ran up to him and flip him the football. And the official game 15 yard penalty for celebration. Hey, said after the game, he sorry about what he did. But he got so excited seeing Reggie Bush that he sold a lot control of himself and foot through the football, but You know, you've gotta be able to celebrate. But yet you've got to be able to control yourself to at the same time, but I think there's got to be understanding between the official and what young people go through when they work so hard. So Ah, Score touchdown or make a great play. I'm not talking about Contini. I'm talking about showing an expression of how excited they are in a decent way as faras celebrating subject they accomplished winning a football game blocking a punt. Catching a big past doing something that's respectable Where you Khun deal feel good about what you did, and and I'll never forget that either Chuck every time you bring it up, the first thing I think about is the 15 yard penalty. Well, they're going to have another opportunity against his studio and that whole Fox he will be there and Reggie will get a little bit better recognition that he did last time. I don't even know if they even truly introduced him during media. The game other than the fact that Fox was there. But again, this could be a little different circumstance and cause we're underway. D too, in the U. S. East preseason and getting ready for this and just On a positive note. Don't need here. Let's look at some depth that he has snapper David Johnson and Potter. Ben Griffiths. We're meeting Preseason first team All Americans, Elijah, Very talker was a pre season All American second team pick came slow is Amar Ross ain't Brown. Receiving recognition. Uh, Tyler von straight. Jackson alone. A hoof fungus are all on high profile Watch list. Stephen Carr. They may not be I, uh, it's a market in a mall. But that's just a great start in regards to what kind of talent it's on this football team. Now the question is We always know it's what's up front that counts on both sides, the offensive line and defence of one. You have some concerns, Things start to open up. Well, Chuck, I do. First of all everybody knows that USC is a great traditional football pro program and gets great players currently now this year with the, uh, commitment yesterday of John Moore, a commitment for Stanford switched over now is going to USC three star receiver. USC has moved up to the six spot as Faras. In recruiting a Zafar, the rankings by 24 7 Sports wire and, uh, that's pretty prestigious when you think a year ago they were down about 57 58 organise a third. So two Pac 12 teams in the top 10 in Faras College recruiting now, of course. These players haven't signed, but these players have verbally committed. So there's always been great talent at USC and and and, you know, it's been really close toe to be a family. I remember when every player in Southern California want to go to USC, and I did know players about itself in California. I didn't grow up out of Southern California, but I know that all the players want to go to U. S. See if they had a choice of school they wanted to go to his USC. Over and play with John Mackay or Pete Carroll. Who, whatever Whoever was coaching at that time, John Robinson And you were just happy to Goto. Us said Get a scholarship if you could, and at that time they gave 130 scholarship 140 scholarship, and at that time you were just happy to make the team. At that time you were happy. If you made the travel squad. It was something that was so exciting to do. I made the travel team whether you play or not. You're excited about making a trip with the Trojans football team and wait for your turn. And so on. Now it's a little bit different as Faras. I'm not just you, etc. But I'd say a lot of schools with the announcement of spring practice starting on Friday as you mentioned three players off out. Two offensive lineman say they've decided not to play and come back in the fall of next year, 2000 21 season defensive lineman says the same thing. I'm not going to play. I want to sit out. I want to come back and the next season and playing there, too. Starting linebackers inside linebackers who Really played that much, who went to rehab in surgery and went on an ankle went on a need there, both injured again, and both are having surgery again just before practice even started. So And then they got a great defensive end on a kid named Jackson, who was a freshman All American, a freshman first team all Fact for player last year, he's got a hamstring and he can't show up to practice and they're trying to teach him a new position at us on the defensive side of the ball with the new offense, defensive coordinator Excuse me, Tony Orlando, so You know it. It's discouraging when you have had so much time off. As far as the workout. You've been away from football.

"You know, he was a different place style that I was. I mean, he still hit hard. That wasn't his mane. Object. You know, he was out there getting turnovers and things like that. But my point is that sometimes you get put in situations that you're just you feel like you're going down with the ship, and I'll never forget walking off the field that my senior year That last game thinking at the Rose Bowl thinking this is so sad. I'm just looking around at the stadium at the Rose Bowl, and you know us over there and Ohio State I'm thinking, Wow, I wish I could play this game so more. This was so much fun. No, it got me an education. You know a free education at Ohio State and believe me, I was so shocked. You know, within a month. You know that when they had the draft in January and be drafted by Chicago Bears? Well, it was unbelievable experience. Yeah, and see now here's the crazy thing is that my dad had lived in Columbus for about 9 10 years. So he lived for Ohio State football, and we, of course, grew up in North Jersey. And I don't know if I ever I think I may have told you the story of how I became a USC fan, and I really was the only USC fan that I knew in New Jersey. Nice sense of Bob's Coochie. Bob's Coochie actually runs Boyd Gaming, the sports books. He's the head, Huh, Joe, but he actually went to USC Jersey guy, So he was the only other guy I knew later on that, you know, grew up in New Jersey, but was a USC football fan. What happened was we were in Nutley, New Jersey, North Jersey, and back then, you know Rutgers was a relevant for Horace football. So it was. It was two teams that people rooted for their Penn State and Joe, Pa. And Notre Dame. Those were the two teams where, you know most of the people in Jersey there room for and so the old man, you know, his biggest thing was I under forget in November. If Ohio State beat Michigan It was a great day for Katie Junior because there were no chores. The old man was drinking early. It was great now if they lost to Michigan. And it wasn't I mean, thank God they won most of the time, but I mean, it was, still was it was Ah, it was a day with more chores. Although the old man realized that I was a very loyal fan, and it wasn't that I didn't want to see him happy, and I didn't get into Ohio State. But what happened was I get put up in the booster seat. After the old man watches he's getting his hair cut, and Ohio State's putting the finishing touches, and this is in the sixties and and putting the finishing touches on a victory over Michigan. And so the old man's gloating. Around the barbershop. And so Katie Junior, then get to put up in the in the booster seat. And all of a sudden I see this freaking white horse with this guy with this cape and and like this helmet, and he's got a sword. He's riding around, and then I see these like gorgeous cheerleaders. I mean, I I know I'm only Ah young kid, but he's still no beauty when you see it and just like this Coliseum on I'm like That's my team. I go. That's my team, and I have never wavered. I've always followed USC football and so back in the day when it was the pack eight when I was growing up, and it was the big 10 we'll hae. The Big 10 had two stupid ass rule The gentleman's rule if you wanted to years in a row, but you went to the Rose Bowl last year. Then you give way to the other team and the package. The package like screw that if we win it, we're going every year. You know, until USC That's why they probably have more Rose Bowl victories. In Ohio State because they were able to go more. They had more opportunities to go back in the day till they change that ridiculous rule in the Big 10. But I remember me and the old man going at it with some of those head to head games and The greatest one. For me, as I remember, you know is when the old man and you probably remember this game, but the old man sitting in his lazy boy and Ohio State's win 17 to 10. And and us. He's driving and you know, I'm like, Oh, God, yeah, And I'm pretty sure it's Pat Hagen's quarterback, and I'm just like, Oh, God, please and I'm sitting over on the floor. You know, I'm not even on the couch. So I'm very far away from my old man's lazy boy chair and southern cows driving and I could see the old man. Now he's getting a little concerned because Jessie's across midfield And you know, I vaguely remember. But all I remember is that as he's coming down, and then they score, and it's inside the last minute or whatever, and My old man stands up and he kicks his lazy boy charity goes at crap, because, well, at least we'll get a share of that. Freakin u P I crap because of the AP and the up E I So he figures all right, there's still going to get a shot. Even if with the Thai there's still going to get a shot of one of the titles and stuff, and so all of a sudden, John McKay holds up the peace sign. And my dad. I'll never forget he goes well, what in the hell kind of California crap is this? Who the hell goes for two? And of course, you have seas going for two because they figured a tie's not doing them any good. And so John McKay goes for two and they get the ball to Sheldon digs and they end up beating Ohio State 18 to 17. And I was just like I had to literally just Kind of sneak out of the living room into my room. Close my door quietly nice and soft and then just pound my fist in the air like yes, I can't believe they just pulled off this miracle win. And I'm here in the old man words that I never heard before, Like. I mean, he's calling John Mackay every name in the book and just like blowing a gasket, and it's like I'm just like I can't go back out there because I have no idea until you know And finally like, about two hours later, the old man comes in my room and he goes As a hell of a call. He goes. He goes that coach got way, Boss man, You know, it's just saying he goes initially, you know he couldn't believe he was doing it. But then he said, you know, pretty balls. He called there for McKay to go for two and my dad appreciated. You know great sportsmanship and appreciate a great games. It took him about two hours of drinking vino to kind of cool down to where he was able to talk about it, But I know There were rows balls. You were in three of those suckers, weren't you? Yeah. You know what? You're describing a game that my senior year? Oh, no, my last year and I played on Michigan the pain before that, where we beat them. Afterwards, the first practice it'll how Satan to get ready to go to the Rose Bowl. Woody Hayes and our defence coordinator walk up to me and they go. Doug, you missed the tackle in the first quarter. And we can't have a person out there can't make tackles. Oh, no, that That's the only tackle. I missed that game and I played well. I forced the fumble and made some nice tackles. They said We're gonna put you gonna be back on the bench for your last game of the year. Your career. Oh, my God. So then he turned around, walked away. Can't think about that You're going OK. My last game could be on the bench. And you know they brought in. You know, they actually end up bringing in a freshman Mike played in front of me. And so all those places that you're talking about. They ran a post corner. On this guy for a touchdown because we hear everything way didn't play the win. We don't play aggressive on that Last drive can't write. He played not to lose. We played very deep, 10 15 yards. You know what if you run off if you throw in town says it like 10 15 yards, and the guy runs another five or 10 yards. It only takes a few plays to get down the field..

"And it's always great to Vegas is I always call it and everybody knows the special Vinh City, the world that can host anything. And during that, Ah Vegas was basically the best place to watch. Any big event, including the Super Bowl and got itself in trouble little bit because People would go to Vegas and really party and enjoy going to that, because I used to go to the Super Bowl. But being honest with you enjoy go to Super Super Bowl in watching it in Vegas. Then maybe going to the game because first fallen kids. It was a different lot of a lot of different reasons. But we were able to be able to bring in great players. Great coaches helped the casinos and people there with great gassed and great Viper parties. And do some great events out that time. It was it was different. But now now that the NFL is welcome and abetting is OK in the NFL and players can come. Then it active players couldn't come. It was a little bit different. The the NFL had a different philosophy as faras gaming and gambling and The parties that we had in Vegas. They got a little bit upset about that, and And there had we have to make some changes of the hotels had to make some changes on those parties where the NFL said it was their property and you can't charge and do this. A lot of those parties were eliminated. Really? I've never come back to the level of what we were doing them. We would have thousands of people at different hotels with all these great celebrities with pipe parties and everything else. It was fantastic. And we talked about the different eras. In fact, on this station right here, Katie WN following every Super Bowl. John McKay would join us with Craig verdict for a wrap up show of the Super Bowl. Is absolutely fantastic. Babel have John Mackay honest with us every single Super Bowl following the game, So we had a lot of traditional things we did, But things change and Times change and teams change in personnel change and talent changes. Some of the teams that you were just talking about. Uh, I'm not sure that uh uh, players today. I'm not saying they're not talented, very talented, but I don't know if they could go through. What the players of the past have gone to it for toughness, scrimmaging practicing. Types of Ah, uh, football that was played then compared to now on what's playing played there. You never go go across the middle of the field. Ronnie Lott back there. Or somebody or the defensive backs of the hit that these players would put on you and the wild bunch and the great game's between some of these great team said that he used to play it. The history and tradition of the Of the Rose Bowl. The Big 10 Pac 10 where that was a big game, and not that it didn't sell a big game. But that was a game that everybody want to play it know about if your coach you on the coach, and if you play want to play in it I still believe today that the wishes of all the players and coaches that are playing the game of college football, a traditional game, a championship game played in a amateur stadium with tradition, not an NFL stadium, where most of them are played now. But the players of those that era Chuck was different. We scrimmaged every day. We scrimmage on Thursdays before the game, Uh, not say we advocated players playing her, but players didn't tell you they were hurt. They just want to play the game so much. They wouldn't even indicate that they had an injury. They were afraid at that time. If they didn't play, they wouldn't be able to come back and play with someone else to get the opportunity of plain and they'd never play again. Because at that time in college football that was in a limit on how many cases of people you could recruit or or have on your football team. So great programs like Alabama and USC, Ohio State They would take 50 60 freshman. They'd say, I'd rather have monarch team to play against..

"Just a great play by play guy basically a throwback to the old style, but with the vision towards the teacher Absolutely fabulous. I went and I explained to him that I was into radio now, and I want to talk to a master. Just like I used to want to do that. When I went into coaching as far as talking to a bear Bryant or Woody Hayes or John Mackay as Faras coaching and I went in, I said, I just need to know a few tips on what you think The key things are as far as being a a great broadcaster. And he says, Remember one thing, son. And, uh, he says, Remember, when you do radio people can't see what you see. And he said, You've got to describe to them what you're seeing. So they can right along, right with you and see the same thing. You're seeing me don't assume they can see The things they can't see. You've got to explain to them what is happening in front of you so they can understand it. You've got to be descriptive. You've got to be able to say what you're seeing, so they enjoyed listening to you and they get a real feeling. What's going on with the crowd yells and so on, he says. Another thing to So many announcers never tell you who they're listening to, or what game he played or what the score is. He says. You've got to make sure you always mention what game it is. How much time is on the clock? What quarter? It is and the score and he said, You don't do that. People can listen to you five minutes or 10 minutes and all they say Who the hell is this? Who's playing or what's the score? How much time left in the game? These are just two things that I learned from, among other things, shot But little things like that little tips like that, from a genius like had a chance of Getting, you know pretty well as you did Keith Jackson and talk with Keith Jackson and visiting with him as far as his great experiences and how he became a A broadcaster, and why and so on. The best way to learn his first ball by doing And Keith Jackson used to tell me he used to broadcast the Rose Bowl game on his way to school to start talking about it. And I think that now today when, when I have younger people that want to work with me, or you as we don't I just put him right on the air. I said, Here you go. We're going to do it. You're gonna learn how to do it right now Cold. And all of a sudden either have it or they don't have it. And I think that's what's exactly Ah, good way of learning things and finding out should you be on the air. Should you be a producer somebody off the error in sales. So he taught me a lot of things that day. Chuck and I I think I think you 100 times for it, but I'm gonna do it again. I think it's so cool that to be in an environment like that, when the end of a draft who's going on and it's not often that you get, uh back to Manhattan and have a chance to have that that accesses I think the same thing with keys, Jackson, you know, unfortunately, lost keys. We've been doing a look inside his wife from his science from his family and I guess the picture of him sitting at the typewriter. Typing out his opening and working with How you wanted to feel because you feel with Keith Jackson. Then you're such a natural that he showed up and did it to start it up. But you know that he was a man of preparation to use classically trained in Washington state after Toward the Marines. But I think that was the single most impactful. Is that how he really, really worked on that?.

The bear was the head coach the first all black starting five. Thank you, Mike. We would eventually have gotten to that. It's like Jackie Robinson, but the key is, when you have something like that for that team, they be Kentucky. An all white team in the national championship game. It's, it's to win to perform well in Texas. Western was just a different team quicker team than Kentucky was in that did usher in, you know, the integration, it's like when Alabama played USC and you can go back. When bear Bryant's coaching Alabama and John MacKay brought USC to Alabama. And I think that's when Sam bam Cunningham was there. And all of a sudden bear Bryant said, you know, might want to change my recruiting style a little bit there because USC brought in some athletes there. But I think that that was probably when you started defined integration in the SEC in the south with Alabama when they played USA and it wasn't that long ago. How go back to what was that, mclovin? Clemson just gave their their coats like what one hundred million dollars ten million a year, basically. Yeah. Because they're they're successful. So I understand that you pass a lot of schools to get to Clemson when you're out here out west. But there's only two schools that parental find themselves in final four, and he happened to go to choose one of them. Now. I don't think that's a pooh-poohed necessarily on Clemson or his choices. It's reflexive of the changing dynamic of college football. I don't disagree with that. But this the the rub here, isn't that? Clemson isn't good in Alabama isn't good. They're the two best teams, probably Oklahoma. How state or probably three and four. Those are the does are the four best programs in college football right now. But as C was right there for the longest period of time. And but if you told me though, Travis if you say that guy was leading to go to Ohio State. I'd go, okay. That's all right.
