"The crafting of the Westbrook acquisition. Where very early in the piece, it was like, well, Westbrook had told LeBron he would accept a different role. So in some way, it absolves blame for LeBron wanting Westbrook. It was like a hint at. Here's how we're going to spin this. And it was like, well, Westbrook fucking told me he wasn't going to take terrible shots and just freelance on defense all the time. He told me he was going to totally change every way. They blame LeBron for the transaction itself. And then absolved him for Westbrook apparently misleading him. Yes. I'm going to change how I play. It's like, if there is one guy in the last 50 years who has never changing one ounce of how he played at any point, it was Russell Westbrook. I don't know how they felt for that one. But we want to know why because that didn't happen. Yeah, it didn't happen. But it was a step in the LeBron distancing himself from fully signing off on it. Listen, I'm so glad that he didn't play the last two games to go for the scoring title because as I said a few days ago, I thought that was beneath him. I said that house on Tuesday. It's like one of the great players of all time. Number two on my list. What does he care about? A scoring title, and he didn't make the playoffs. Pack it in and go home. You're going to try to chase the scoring title on a sprained ankle. This beneath them. It's a better part of that. I'm glad he didn't do that. I think you saw the light. But I think he was going to chase the scoring title until. His team saw some of the feedback about how that looked, where he's ducking the hard games, but yet he's going to come back to play OKC to put up like a 60s spot on them. That would have been terrible. I really do think that he changed plan. Because I do as well, I think he was going to play against the bad teams. But the thing is, it kind of felt like he couldn't really win. Because I thought, well, there's no way he'll sit before they're eliminated. And then he did. Yeah. And then it's like, wait, if you sit before they're eliminated, then you just scoring title. You realize you're going to get crushed. Even more than you think you are now. And he wasn't really because I think people get distracted with the MVP stuff, which is kind of dominated all of NBA Twitter here the last week or so. But I had one little final thought on the whole thing. Is that did you how did you feel in the moment with the David Robinson 71 point game? I don't mind it if the guys healthy and. No, like whatever. If it's last day of the season, I didn't mind when the David Thompson, I grew up on that. That was from my generation, it was an exciting moment. This last day of the season, you're going for it. It's the same thing like if you have a chance to score 70 points, we've had guys who had 60 points get taken out of the game when they had a chance to just go for 7 days. I'm okay with it. All right, but I don't know if you remember I didn't remember everything because you're in college, you're not paying as much attention to the day to day. Oh, you mean the actual details of the game? I don't know what happened. I just remember he had 71. They were fouling with two minutes left on purpose to get David Robinson more possession. Really gross. Yeah, that's bad. And then the clippers started complaining and then John Lucas.

"Decided to cut him loose entirely. And Christian wood, while productive over the course of the last couple of years in a couple places, Detroit and Houston has had some bumps along the way too, but this is what happens. I mean, when you're the rockets and you're looking for hidden gems or, you know, just some, you know, just try to find young guys to build around who may have some rough spots, you knew you were taking a risk when you brought these guys in, especially Kevin Porter junior and do you have the infrastructure? Do you have the foundation to deal with it? John Lucas is a great place to start. So if you had asked me in the abstract a year ago, hey is this a good place for these guys to go where they'll have the right support and the right leadership? I'd say yes because of John Lucas in particular and any of the rest of that coaching staff too and certainly Steven Silas. But do they have the veterans there? Outside of Eric Gordon and I don't know DJ Augustine. I mean, like there's no there's not a lot of gray hairs on this roster. Not a lot of guys who've been through a lot. I just, I don't know if you've got enough there to coax these guys through these kinds of times. And, you know, listen, maybe they're just not going to be. Like maybe there is no good answer. Maybe Kevin Porter junior is never going to get it right. We see that happens sometimes too. I'm not saying that that he won't. I never want to write a guy off this early in his career. He's very young. But some guys never figure it out. So maybe it's not in the rockets. But you do have to have the support system there when you're taking a risk on guys who have a history as these guys do. So I don't know where it goes from here. I mean, you know, look, teammates can forgive it, they can bring them back into the fold and admit that that's tough to that's not a fight in the locker room. That's just quitting. Like, it's as simple as that. That's quitting. You quit on your team. Two players, two starters, two of the best players on that team just quit. Now I wrote a column about this on SI dot com. I know it sounds like a nuclear option to just cut ties with these two players, but the rockets, they've got to build a culture. Now you just said, when you're in a position like the rockets, you're trying to take a flyer on these guys, try to see try to find a diamond, whatever. The rockets have talent on that roster. Pretty good young town. Like jaylen green has the potential to be a terrific score. Alperin sanguine is someone that has looked like he could be one of the steals in the draft from this past year. 6 foot ten can rebound, looks like he can shoot the three down the line, good player. You got Jay Sean Tate, who's got a little bit of that PJ Tucker in him can be a defensive minded guy in your front court, defend a bunch of different positions. Like those are the guys you are going to be building around. It's not going to be Kevin Porter and Christian wood. It's just, I think we've reached that point. Like Kevin Porter junior is extension eligible this summer. Can you imagine any scenario where the rockets committed serious money to him? Like real money? Anything beyond like money that they wouldn't mind eating if things go wayward once again? Same thing with Christian Woods got one year left in his contract. He's extension eligible this summer. Like wood puts up numbers, he was fourth in the most improved player voting last year, but he has yet to show anywhere that he's a winning player. It's not, look, it's not on him that he played for Detroit, and they're bad. Now he's with Houston, they're bad, but all I've seen from Christian wood is that he can put up numbers. I have not seen contributions towards winning yet, at least not the kind of contributions that would warrant being paid real money by the Houston Rockets. Your future, if you're Houston, is green, it is Tate, it is sanguine, and it's whoever comes out of this high lottery pick that you're going to have next year. Whether that's Chet holmgren or jabari Smith or any of the other guys that are out there sitting at the top of next year's draft. Those are the guys you're building around. Every other roster spot needs to be devoted to guys that will help them succeed. Veteran guys that will help them succeed. I don't I just don't see the point right now at keeping Porter junior and would around when you I mean you know like they're smart people in Houston. They know that these two guys are not going to be part of their long-term future. So my opinion is that you just cut Kevin Porter junior like you eat the last of the 1.8 million. He's due this year. I think it's 3.2 million next year. And you trade Christian wood. Like there's a market for Christian wood. Like Charlotte would love to get their hands on Christian wood. Portland would love a guy like Christian wood. I'm sure the Lakers want everybody at this point. They would love to get a guy like Christian wood. So you can deal him and then just focus on your culture, try building, you know, things in a more productive way. Like you have the coach, like Steven Silas, is an excellent coach. He's probably going to wind up getting scapegoated for this mess. At some point, at the end of the year, because that's the way it goes in the NBA. But Steven Silas is an excellent coach, a very good developmental guy as he's shown in previous stops as an assistant. So you've got a good coach. You've got some pretty good young players, a decent foundation. I don't know why you're messing around with stuff like this that can only serve to create negativity around your team, potentially hamper the development of some of the young guys you're really locked in on. Yeah, I mean, it's hard to disagree with any of that, Chris. I don't know what the rockets are going to become where this is all headed, what the overall plan is. I mean, obviously, look, it's a tear down, and they are going young and they're trying to stock up on young players and that's the general direction, which is the normal thing to do when you were forced into a position to trade guys when you had to offload harden and Westbrook and start over. And I don't mind them going, you know, making some rolls of the dice, but you also do have to acknowledge when those roles have gone bad when you've crapped out. I don't know if we're there yet. I mean, you know, look, there's often a lot more to these things than we see or hear, right? So have there been any other incidents that are of a serious nature with either Porter or wood? Have you hit the third strike yet with these guys? Are you okay still proceeding with maybe just one of them? And you're right on Porter junior it's a small price to pay with another whatever you burn 3 million or whatever off of cap if you cut them now for next season, that's not gonna kill you. You're gonna be below the cap anyway and you're rebuilding team. It's fine. And I agree that there are teams that would not only love to have Christian wood for his talent, but could handle whatever comes with that. A more veteran team, there are plenty of places I could see him. I think he'd be great in Dallas. Portland, as you mentioned, there are plenty of others who could use a talented big. Um, I just don't know if we're at that point yet. I don't know. It has Houston definitively reached the breaking point with either or both. I do think there's the danger of if you hold on to them too long and if those things continue and are unchecked or they're not held accountable unless to their credit, they suspended them both for a game. They're trying to establish what the rules and what the limits are. But you don't want to poison the overall environment, right? When you get Jalen green, when you get, when he's back, when you have the next group that comes behind that in the coming draft and the one after that, you certainly want to have a good stable and accountable environment for guys to come up.

"A whole new level for you and me, Chris. This relationship. Like and subscribe for the best weekly NBA content. These two are capable of. What does that mean? Could be the best duo ever. I don't see how you can beat that. Here they are. Chris mannix, and Howard back. All right, welcome back, crossover, NBA podcast, Chris mannix, and Howard Beck. Happy new year back. The one and only time I will say happy new year. I feel like it's been worth been abused too often. Our phrase is used too often in the conversations. I feel like January 1st, you can say happy new year, like after that, just let it go. This is very Larry David of you. It's January 4th as we record this, which I'm with Larry David on this one too, I think. Like this is the outer limit, right? Like we have not had a conversation since the calendar changed. So it's fine. Happy new year, Chris. We can say that right now. That's it. Statute of limitations runs out very quickly. Yeah, it does. Any new year's resolutions before we get started? Your resolutions happen. Nah. Flawless, right? You're just, no issues. Yeah. I mean, my issues are unsolvable, at this stage of my life. If I've gotten this deep into a spirit, that's the spirit. I'd be really. You know, plus it's little things, right? It's like on any given day and you get like, we don't have to wait till the new year to make a residence. I could just say like, you know what? I should probably cut back on the red vines this year, but I'm not gonna cut back on the red vines. I love red vines. Yeah, I've got the usual resolutions, try to eat a little bit better, try to cut down on the candy. You know how it goes Howard. When you're on the road, it's just brutal. Eat whatever's put in front of you, and oftentimes, in press rooms, there are not a healthy section of some of these press rooms. So I'm gonna do my best to cut back on some of those things. All right, Howard, I want to jump into a few different things. And I want to begin down in Houston, where the wheels are starting to come out off the wagons a little bit for the rockets. On Saturday, Houston went into the locker room down 22 points to the Denver Nuggets from there. Things really unravel. According to the athletic, two starters, Kevin Porter junior and Christian wood got into a heated argument with rockets assistant coach John Lucas, Porter, reportedly through something, I needed to be separated from Lucas after that altercation, Porter left the arena would return to the bench, but refused to go into the game when Steven Silas the head coach called on him. Now on Monday, both players were suspended for one game. Here's what Stephen Silas had to say about the incidents. Kevin, you know, like I said, we have spirited debate. He lost his temper and half time. To the point where I thought what would be best for the team and the best for our culture as a group. And. Just making sure that everybody is on the same page, I thought it would be best for him to be suspended for today's game. Christian, we had a disagreement as far as him going back into the game in the second half and I decided it would be best for the team and it's very much attached to accountability for everybody on our team and my job is to hold people accountable to their actions. So Howard, I've got a few thoughts on this. First, I've never heard of a player leaving the arena because of something that happened at halftime. Because of an altercation. I have heard of guys refusing to go into games. Being benched for the second half, things like that. I have not heard of a player doing what Kevin Porter junior did. And I asked around, like I called a few coaches last night. I talked to a couple of executives. Nobody really heard anything about this. I heard of anything like this rather. So that's number one. Number two, I don't know how you go back in something like this. I don't know how Kevin Porter junior and Christian would go back to their team after incidents like this. I mean, you're in kind of the heat of battle here. You're on at the time, I believe a 6 game losing streak. You're down 22 points to a team that's good, but because of injuries the nuggets are not unbeatable and two of your best players, Christian wood, leading score a leading rebounder, Kevin Porter, de facto point guard of that team. Just quit. You just quit on the team. And I don't know how like a suspension for one game makes any better. I don't know how those two guys go back into that rocket's locker room. And expect to be kind of re embraced by their teammates now. They were called out initially because of what John Lucas saw as a lack of effort. And by the way, if you're beefing with John Lucas, the problem is probably more you than it is John Lucas. I mean, John Lucas has four decades of experience in the NBA as a player as a coach. He also has done incredible work at working with athletes that have kind of lost their way and helping them kind of get back on track. If John Lucas is going at you, you sit and take the criticism from John Lucas. That's an aside to all that. But I just don't know how this continues with Kevin Porter junior and Christian wood with that team. I don't know how it gets any better. What was your take on what happened in Houston? Well, first of all, yeah, I agree with you, obviously on John Lucas, the man is a legend and anybody who doesn't know his story, go Google his name, you'll find it really quickly and on that note also phenomenal story that our friend Sean Powell over at MBA dot com had written about John Lucas and Kevin Porter junior to start this season when things were still in a more constructive tone between them, but it gives you a lot of insight into Porter and what he's been through in his life, which is considerable. If you look at Kevin Porter junior and you're wondering about his kind of rocky start to his career and thinks he's gone through, go reach on Powell's piece and you'll understand at least a little bit about him and does an excuse anything but you know he's been through some stuff. And John Lucas, of course, went through a lot very early in his career, got himself on track and has used his wisdom to great effect on generations of players since so yeah, if you're Christian wood or Kevin Porter junior, you're going to John Lucas you picked the wrong guy to battle. But that's what's so alarming to me, Chris, I'm not going to say that the Houston Rockets are the most stable organization because they're not or that they're the best run because they're not looking everything they've been through the last couple of years in losing Daryl morey and Mike D'antoni and James Harden and Russell Westbrook, but there are good people there. And they knew they were rolling the dice when they decide to pick up Kevin Porter junior who was just outright cut by the Cavaliers who just decided after spending a first round pick on him and dealing with some things with him in his first year. They just decided this is not a player we want to invest more time in. And that said a lot. Especially given where the Cavs were at that time that.

"And I guess let's start with Kevin Porter junior he left the calves parted ways with him because of stuff like this. And now here's becoming a problem. Absolutely. And now here it is becoming a problem in Houston too. Where does this go? Yeah, so if we go back to that just to give a little bit more history on this. So Kevin Porter junior ended up being drafted with the 30th pick in the first round after many thought he might be a lottery pick, but there are a lot of questions about his attitude, issues that he had had with teammates and with coaches and his past, and though it's kind of things. He slipped. He was the last player or I guess most recent players should say to not sign the full working scale amount to. He signed for less than the full working scale amount and part of that was because the pistons drafted him, but it was a prearranged trade of the calves. And the cash that we're going to take you, but you're not going to take the full amount. And we're really going to work on trying to get you back to good. Has a strictly a basketball player Kevin Porter junior is wildly talented. Yes, he is. Multiple teams have said disc is a guy who can play the James Harden rule of give him the ball and let him let him do his thing out there. You run that and that's what the rockets did. Calves tired of it. Very quickly. They then traded in Houston. And that was a deal that came together very late after it looked like the cabs were just going to wave them, which is, again, kind of unheard of with a first round pick. He went to Houston and John Lucas, who's a rocket system coach and around for a number of years. Receives rave reviews for working with troubled players and getting them to a better place. Did with Kevin Porter junior and then what happened with that one was Lucas actually came in and was kind of letting them have it a little bit about his effort level and his attention to detail. And those kind of things, reports, our Porter through something, who knows? Maybe a bowl of soup. But if he's in front of the JR Smith play, but that's right. He threw something that argument continued and then yeah, as you said he got in his car and he left, left the arena and went home. Christian wood was late to, I believe it was shoot around and also missed pregame mandatory testing. Then they said, oh, you're not going to start because you were late. He came off the bench, played a very uninspired minutes..

"Couple clippers contracts and that's it for Ben Simmons. Is that are they looking at like 20, 25 cents a dollar? I just don't think Dara would do that. I think you'd rather just bury him and do a steering contest because the thing is, I've been waiting for this to happen with somebody where the player who thinks he has all the leverage who's already getting paid who just thinks he can decide what to do. Actually picks the wrong fight. And in this case, it's the wrong fact. Is Doc Rivers certainly doesn't care. He's been in the NBA for four decades. He's not gonna back down to this guy. Sixers owners don't care. Darrell had all of China coming after him. He's fine. And then the Philly fans, there are the same way. So it's like this is the one situation where I think the player picked the wrong battle. Even the Kyrie thing, there's people will cave in the Kyrie thing. It'll happen. I don't think there's going to be caving in this Philly thing. Well, and the one thing, too, that we can't stress enough is. You know how tough Philly fans are, even when you're trying and you're struggling a little bit, this kid can not I mean they'll destroy him. And he was already and I learned this from the piece I did on Ben a couple years ago, already a little sensitive to what Philly fan said about him and thought about him in this whole idea of they like Joelle better and all this other stuff. I mean, they'll destroy him now, because anyone that was maybe on the fence, which I can't imagine there are many Philly fans left that that's the case. After this today, how can you possibly even do anything that suggests any inkling of empathy or humanity regarding him? Because he's basically thumbing his nose at you, your team, your coach, your TM, your franchise player, everybody. And showed up to collect some paychecks, which was pretty transparent. And that's not going to play well either. Well, now, so now you suspend us. So here's my question. I go back to this again. What if? And I don't have no inside knowledge. This is just me projecting, which is what we like to do. What if Ben Simmons is cam comes out and says, Ben Simmons has some mental health issues. He needs to take some time away. This is no different as we've said over and over and over in this league than a torn ACL. A broken mind is just as important as a broken leg. He needs to take a leave of absence. And the sixers would have to pay him, wouldn't they? Yeah, if that happens, which I think is a real possibility, I would hope it's genuine because I think that would demean the people who actually battle. I couldn't agree more. But I would say, based on everything we've seen that's gone on with mint Ben Simmons, I think there's some stuff going on with him. Legitimately, there's stuff going on with him. And there was some stuff in that even in that Ramona piece about this situation with his family, which we knew and we've talked about a load on the pod. But yeah, it seems like there's a lot of burdens with this dude. I think he has some real family issues. And I think it's like the stuff we talked about in the past, the difference between fearful and fearless and janus how fearless that guy is. That guy is unafraid of everybody and everything and every situation. And if something bad happens, he's on to the next play and Ben Simmons is just the opposite. And it seems like something changed in him between senior and high school and LSU where he became fearful instead of fearless. Right. But yet, we have again examples throughout history. You know, Magic Johnson came out as a rookie in 1980 and he was fearless. He played all 5 positions you want him a championship. And then, you know, in Boston garden, four years later, three years later, he dribbles out the clock and misses free throws and everyone's calling him tragic magic. And then within a year he's wins a championship again. So it's at least he had the baseline of he had had some real success. I guess the issue that fans I talked to are like, what are Ben Simmons wins? What are the things we can point to where it's like, well, he came through that time. It doesn't exist. So when you combine that with all the stuff that's happening now, and we've seen, I mean, you really, you don't have to go back to the cocaine era where you see guys who just tail off. Right? But it was always drugs, or it was always some sort of terrible knee injury. Like, you know, what happened to grand hill or what happened to it? Right. Yeah, which is a shame. But you go back to the 80s and you go look at some of the basketball. Go look at like John drew, go look at John Lucas. Go look at microwave Richardson. These guys, Michael ray Richardson so on, you know, everybody always says he was going to be the missing piece for X, Y and Z, you know, all those guys. Hey, go all the way back to Spencer, Hayward. Who tells who tells his story very plainly that he should have won three championships with the Lakers? But he's too busy being coked up. And God bless him. He's clean now and he's a great he's a great cautionary tale and is so eloquent it telling it. But but I don't think that's what's going on here. I'm not saying that that's what's going on. I know you're not over the course MBA history where Elgin bail is another one, right? Everybody says LJ heard his knee at some point in the mid 60s. Right. It was just never the same. And that's it. So we've seen it with injuries. We've seen it with drugs. We've seen guys get a little funky like latrell sprewell. I think people forget he was first team all in BA and gold state midnight. I would say he was probably the third best two garden the league when he strangled PJ. Looked at his career was over, but he came back. I don't I'm really starting to wonder as Ben Simmons come back in a way that this doesn't that it doesn't drag this around. Now you could say sprewell did. It's pretty well choked his coach was a pariah and was a hero for the Knicks within a year and a half. How about Ron artest, destroyed the league with malice in the palace? Get some counseling. Thanks his psychiatrist on the podium as he beats the Celtics in Boston for an NBA championship. Happens. So I guess the difference with this is we've pointed to all these different things. It's like injury. Some sort of terrible incident drugs. I don't remember just this guy doesn't really like it here situation. Snowballing like this has. But I guess I would push back that I think there's more to it. That's why I'm arguing this mental health, just look between the lines. Some of the things you're talking about, I just think it's a bigger issue. And if it is, it's one that no one will be sympathetic towards, but I will, if.

"Play some pickup games and work out with some NBA guys. And John Lucas really asked me, you know, like how many more years of school do you have left? 'cause if you can play this way now, I can't imagine two or three years from now where you'll be. And that was the first seed that got planted in my mind that, you know, if I keep working hard, maybe. But I still didn't know for sure. No, it's finally fist that you would bring up Don Lucas because as we all go through our life and we have trials and tribulations. I actually spent 45 days down there in the rehab center. Jonathan Lucas is a special guy, man. Really? I mean, Luke had a real, incredible college career, but again, he had his issues in the pros, but he's made a great thing that he has is this rehab home down there. So I'm glad that you even brought his name up because I love John Lucas to death. So you finish that Little Rock doctor saw you the 24th player picked in the NBA. What were you thinking? I mean, I couldn't get past the tears at first. I was overwhelmed with emotion, you know, sometimes you can work your tail off and put everything into something and it's still just doesn't happen for whatever reason. And so to hear my name called, you know, by the commissioner that night, it was, it was so special of a moment because it was like it was one of the first times that, as a young adult, you sensed that if you really put your all into something and you fully commit to it and you don't give up until you get there, it can actually happen. And so the emotion was over the top. And then on the heels of that came, oh my gosh. I'm on the phone with Jerry West. I'm about to go to the Lakers..

"Phoenix suns and other team. That's going to be up there. Like right off the bat. Because they added like javale mcgee landry shamet so like most of their course still intact so Do lakers are gonna have those tough games early on where they are going to be like struggling to figure themselves out where they stand in the pecking order because the west is going to be a monster like usually is. But i feel like if there's a team that's going to start picking things up as the season goes along going to be the lakers just because of all the new pieces coming in on the lakers. Coaching staff. Also completely new to david physicals coming in john. Lucas third is coming in You know line. Holland's left jason kidd left so there's a lot of movement within dot to try to get sorted out so things are going to have to like. I think we'll start figuring out who the lakers are like. Hopefully by christmas. That should give some you know a two months time in to like see where the lakers are standing compared to the other teams health is obviously may be the biggest part because of the lakers. As are they going to be durable Can they make it work. You know like there's not a lot of young legs on this team. How do they balance like rest and lower management and things like that when they get you know to the very tough parts because under the lakers have a pretty easy schedule like the first couple of months like they don't play as many top opponents being started take a turn like in march and as season goes on and they start to play like all the big teams More often so. If there's any time for the lakers to make mistakes is going to be early on just because of the teams are gonna to play like another play a lot of like the lower level teams early on in both conferences so work your struggles out then and be prepared because amnesties is not gonna be good would of course we never Injuries will turn out in like shape things as the season goes but just giving what we know on paper. The lakers are going to be the team. That as the season progresses hopefully the source things out and makes a late push And hopefully finishes like a top three seat. I least that's where. I kind of have them if everything works in their favor. Yeah i agree. The team definitely needs to finish app. Three and i think i would have them there right now but like you mentioned. It's i think the way that. I look at the lakers too so interesting. Because we're not the way i look at them just like in looking at them. It's interesting because like mentioned last year when the ryan ad went down or even when it was just. i mean like they both missed significant chunks. And there's a lot of inconsistency in the rosser That team is bad as the offense was. I think they were like bottom five in the league for like a fifteen game stretch. They were clear. Cut the number one defense in the league. They had that hang their hat on. I hate that issues that cliche statement. But i didn't have anything better but like you knew that. That was their blueprint. That's how they won game. this what they did. The team is so different compared. To how how that's looking we just don't really know what the identity of the team's going to be yet..

Guys right like christian would twenty five years old on a deal for three more years really figuring out his game if he can stay healthy next year. It's been a problem this year. I really think that he'll he'll approve a lot more. He was the most improved candidate. Still kind of is just the midst game kind of messed that up and julius randle having the season he did really like stocks. Really being the guy for that award but it up a little bit. This offseason really rehabs that ankle at very high hopes jason. Tatum was rookie of the year candidate. And he's he's been incredible as well. He's he's a very fun story to a story out on the ringer of at nobody's ready yet. Definitely go read it. And then kevin. Junior and k j martin who. I could talk about for hours. But i don't want to make this a day long podcasts. Become for a junior. In my opinion he if things work out for him mentally which it seems like they have with john lucas the former rocket analysis than coach. Who is just a an amazing mentor. And he's a mental health advocate. He's he's gone through substance abuse problems south and so Substance abuse mental health problems. All this he you feel comfortable as someone who goes through that stuff talking to somebody that stuff and so you feel even more comfortable when their profession is the same as yours especially when very few people have been in that in that thing and so that relationship between him and Between john lucas tempur judas important moving forward and k j maher man every game. He's a much better player every single game. He so much more improved and he reminds me a lot of andrea vall. I think he could be that kind of guy. The the rockets yao-ming tracy mcgrady eras. You had two guys who when they were playing were unstoppable but they stopped themselves because they couldn't play like they they weren't playing they weren't on the court And man that that those teams are fun. I mean you had rafer alston on this. You had a luther. Add on those teams chuck as john lucas. The third was on one of them. Mucci norris was on a couple of those acting irish said luther head but Grabbed her head. David wesley like and then you move onto. Oh six seven you got a little bit further and you can bring shame you go down another year you bring in. Aaron brooks ring in lewis skull. Who is all going to be hall of famer matombo. You had carl landry that body jackson. These are fun teams men and they were really really fun teams and the the the best part the best part of all of it and i got to the the the privilege i guess to be able to go to a few of these games Was the twenty two game win streak In two thousand eight so that was absolutely credible. Got snap by boston. And i think A few years ago the rockets had really long win streak. I think was like sixteen. Seventeen games that also got snapped by boston. We also lost to the finals in boston. Legs it's times. Anyone entity lot dons. And so it's it's it's just it's kind of the way things go go in houston but that twenty two game win streak man like there was heart. There was a lot of heart for those teams even though they they didn't make the They made the playoffs. Two thousand eight data loss in the first round but two thousand eight thousand nine this year. That i wanna talk about two thousand eighteen thousand nine. Who in the nba finals. That'd i'll be. The los angeles lakers. Los angeles lakers with With kobe bryant waukesha. The borrowed you know. Low lamar odom rockets around one. Go up against portland trailblazers. Now remember the portland trailblazers. That year it was brandon. Roy lamarcus aldridge. Greg oden at nicb. Attune jumpers bila rudy fernandez. Steve blake like this is a good team is a good team. They were fifty four twenty eight fifty three twenty nine so it was a very good matchup. Rockets win that series in six pretty pretty handle. I mean like ron artest on now. Medoro piece has great series. Yao-ming has a good series. Aaron brooks drop twenty seven in game one like they. "The vikings play of purdue for weighing can knock off the vikings i home. I'll be a very big upset. But this is just the first round. Let's talk about milwaukee. Up eighty four seventy two. That's the first win in the championship for walkie since two thousand eighteen after earning its fourth win in five tries against the jaguars this season twenty point performances from h l thirteen. Take john lucas with twenty two points. And the andre golsen with twenty alad had a double double for m. k. e. with team points ten boards. Joss thomas also had thirteen points. I went seventy nine and h l. Play eight and ten overall and the panthers get to go back to the 'nother center to take on number two right state for tuesday's quarter-final matchup two teams met earlier. This season was just two weeks ago. I remember listening to that first. Game chris collins. Jim brown do a heck of job. I remember that milwaukee just wouldn't go away right state had long streaks and here goes walkie with a long streak. it's very good panthers. Squad and the raiders. Play perfect to knock off milwaukee once and for all so again tuesday march second. It looks like this all these games already. Espn plus you got number. One cleveland state hosting number ten purdue. Fort wayne you've got number two right state hosting number eight milwaukee. You got number three oakland hosting youngstown. State the sixty two penguins got number four norfolk kentucky hosting number five detroit mercy so all three ohio teams still alive and both michigan teams are alive too but hey we're in ohio so again. Let's say all four top teams. When cleveland stay right state oakland and k. you the highest rating c gets the lowest remaining seeds. So that'd be cleveland state of kentucky and then rice table get oakland which teams split up in michigan and the championship game is tuesday march ninth the semi finals on espn u. than espn two and then the championship game will either be on. Espn or espn two..

"Also during the summer camp. What did you learn from those guys John? I think the biggest thing with Johnny off to the point where he was just like I'm at home. You know, my dad's old school coach, you know how he is everything gotta be done this way. There's no variations to the wage. I think that's what John Lucas really introduced me like going back into that old school grind where you know, the only thing you can focus on is basketball and I think that's what John did and then Moses always used to tell me just rebounding. That's what he did just rebound just rebound and and he said that would get you a job. Floor and sure enough. I think that year I came back. I was out to the lineup and we wasn't rebounding well and one thing I can do and I can always get his rebound. So that's what got me back into the lineup. And you know, we I miss Moses all the time, you know, it's it was tragically passed but the little bits and pieces that he gave me was was very powerful. The the the thing I really liked about your game was. The nasty nature about you and what I mean about that is excellent. You have no friends and that is when the things I see guys now. Oh, yeah. This is my boss board. I remember your father saying he said there was a play that you guys had when you were he was coaching you and some people would do something and he would nod and chew and you would not have him and that message elbowed in the mouth. This dude was just the nasty nature of your game to me was what drew me to you because you didn't have crack now when you're inside the lines, you're not friends. I need your perfect example. We're just playing against the Warriors when we broke their winning streak at home and took a dream on get to talk to me means room has like the best of friends and so we get to talking and we're going back and forth and Tony brother steps in is like hey, I need to TU up and we immediately off. Did the same thing as my friend like and then we after that Source Tony left. We went right back to chirping again. And I just think that that's that's just that's just the nature of basketball. No, I'm saying like I'm not going to try to intentionally hurt you. But if you're trying to take what's mine, then I have to put some force behind that. "Off for for or try to do something like that. Nba style. It will hurt the portland community so much. More because portland is is so intertwined and passionate about is basketball team the city of houston the nba. The rockets have seen all the half empty used to rockets play and you take a look at the arena in his after empty when houston was doing his thing. The city of houston in the surrounding areas even that region of the country an nba hotbed nba popularity in that region. And in that state then that that that that area that's behind the nfl college football and even high school football so not be too many people up there screaming and yelling and raising hell because he treated james harden james harden was drafted by the rockets so he wouldn't guy that was birthed in his career blossom in grew in with nurtured by the organization he would far from the james harden became jay dardenne when he was traded from oklahoma city to the to the rockets. But yet still. This wasn't something to where james harden came as a young lad and grew in made mistakes and everything before is that houston community had the opportunity to watch him grow man. he's going ahead and looking for greener pastures. This wasn't the same reaction when kevin durant les oklahoma city and went to the golden state warriors again. Oklahoma city their allegiance to that teams. A lot stronger than the then houston. Rockets are the heat in texas texas the organization or houston texas area. But yeah i mean you know no one's gonna be sitting up here talking about shit together so it was a it was a move that had to be mean and they were the move that if you're used to rocket fan you glad that you mean according to leak sources after the lakers smash the rockets for the second game row if you didn't see it harm with harden which the podium claim. That team wasn't good enough and can't be fixed them with that. Those comments set tillman for t to all the players in the locker room for all pissed off particularly john wall demarcus cousins so it was like well. I don't give a fuck. Just get it done forever for talking about. I don't give a damn stop with the We'll wait and see what we'll try to. Ego will play the waiting game. And maybe he'll come around now. I've seen enough get it done. Get it done. Get it done sooner rather than later for those guys to move on from. James harden raphael stone. Got the The hornets at all right brooklyn. All right sean. Let's go ahead. Do this deal fieldstone first time. Gm going to sing. Ravaged san presi of the general manager of oklahoma city and david griffin when david griffin was getting ready to trade anthony davis and basically the asking price price was similar to what stone was talking about. James harden is young player but player. That's going to be a budding superstar that we can build our team around eleven draft picks and when griffin finally acquiesced in davis was preferred destination. What's which was the. La lakers get a really big hall. And they won the draft lottery to get themselves the generational talent that he was asking for zion williamson but refuse is like. Hey look me and let me. Just go ahead and get as many as possible and i think in terms of a gm gm. That's what you really want more than anything. If you want to build a team. I would think you have the ability to go ahead into accumulate draft picks. So you can build your team that way if you're taking getting someone else's trash for your trash and that's not the way i wanna do this so i think as far as ego was concerned. Raphael stone now is going to have a lot of draft. Pick to play with. And it's not just about drafting players. Danny ainge would tell you. Hey look we had a roster fifteen guaranteed contracts and that two or three first round draft picks. What am i gonna do. What am i gonna do with them. And if you're you're in the twenties whether if they'll try picture eighteen twenty four and twenty seven. What are you going to do with them. You don't find too many franchise type players during at the time of the draft so at least now with all the multitude of picks that raphael's don't have them. You can package those get themselves the get yourself a player of a greater impact. You can go ahead and do a lot of these things. So yeah i like your gm. You're gonna liked it gonna like that a lot. Wendell's world is sports. I'm your host window wallace. Glad you could be with us. Speaking about the trade between the rockets and the pacers and the cleveland cavaliers in the brooklyn nets and others in the no teams must be potential. Starting lineup. houston. Now get john wall the point. Victor oladipo who. You don't know that you guys are gonna be around. Want to trade deadline comes. I mean they could flip. Victor oladipo for us for young talent. Maybe a couple of board draft picks depending upon how the system was story for houston but as of right now john walls at the point. Victor deep shooting guard. Kristen would revelation is at the small forward. P j tucker who in is going to be gone gone pretty soon. He's power forward and damarcus. Cousins is going to be at the center and look so far. John wall as i mentioned before that trade between john wall and russell westbrook so far the winner so far leading that trade is going to john wall. He's appeared in seven baraka snagging. Mr couple covid related issues. That he was trouble he was around someone with covert but dropped twenty plus points three times so far showing some of the speed in the burst that he had before the tear torn achilles. Victor depots played in nine of the eleven games for indiana so far. He's much better needed in the bubble. It looks a lot more healthier. He's averaging twenty five four and a couple of steals per game also playing these also playing defense because he wants to get paid this. He's in a contract. Year christian would is building on his breakout season that he had last year. Detroit averaging twenty two and a half points nine and a half rebounds a block. A game steeler game defense but so far so good. He looked really good against san antonio last night. One of the main reasons why he came back on one that gave the only problem is houston going forward with this. Current roster is the fact that john wall think that he's the he's going to be the the locker room leader. John wall still taste. And he said franchise guy got demarcus cousins. The goal on with them. He still sees himself john wall sees himself as the guy who can be the face of the franchise and he also felt that harden was holding back and holding the team back from him acquiring that That that label or that responsibility you saw him on the bench if you watch that game between san antonio houston last night on. Tnt you saw him up there know cheering and given out instructions. And doing all those type of things. I mean he. He wants to take over that role as being. The guy is being phased the only problem is he's not got he's not that face air. He's going to go ahead and do that his first year. What the team. I mean with the whiz i understand it because when they drafted the number one they built the whole god damn team around him so i can understand that he wanted to be the guy. Even when bradley beal came in through injury is such bradley. Became bradley beal team which was the which annoyed in anger general wall. So much that he asked to be traded because the wizards were moving toward making sure to appease and to placate to the needs and wants are badly bill and now john wall in jamal off. Sorry we'll drive the number one team. I'm sorry who was the one that signed the supermax contract. Oh i'm sorry hutomo multiple all star games. Oh i'm sorry. The one that done multiple charity work in foundations. And everything here in the dc area. Oh i'm sorry who's the guy and this. Dc area who still regarded as a as a big deal. I'm sorry that would be me. And now all of a sudden you're going to bradley beal my sidekick my robin to batman. You're gonna be going to him. Did the asking about trades and coaches in sutures. This and the other. That's my position may not his so john wall got tipped and the winds were like all right. Banham we can't be having this shit because if he's going to be doing this yet he might. You know. Call bradley beal to be like you know what is going to come between me and him and if you're going to go with him then sorry other bridge has been burnt. Get me outta here. I'm going to be leaving when my contract is up. So the word you typically after did do make the crepe russell westbrook but a jawbone didn't go to houston thanks again that he's going to be the john wall of two thousand fifteen not happening not happening. So stephen silas first time head coach in the league. Going about these headaches. You gotta deal with the egos. John wall you gotta deal with the markets cousins. You've got gotta. You've already doubled. The whole james harden situation who g where you got some impressionable young guys on the team. But you're gonna do victory depot all the stuff swirling around in really the only person in on your coaching staff who has any type of chance. The kind of Be jerry west to what the laker dealing with with. Shaq and kobe is john lucas. John lucas at the only guy that could possibly go to john wall and a cousin. It'd be look. Y'all i mean you know you gotta tone it down your delaware. Relax gotta you gotta like take it down a notch some. I don't feel envy at all for stephen stylus but in the long term because the season basically a wash for the rockets but i think in the long term. The rockets put themselves in position to really make some noise again. Not for this year. And i know people aren't people want to hear twenty twenty three twenty four twenty five shit. We don't even know if this planet is going to be up in twenty twenty three twenty four and twenty five let alone everything being back to normal but that was used as looking for at least so far there. That journey has now started. The journey of a thousand miles begins begins with one step. Well on tuesday or wednesday whenever they made the trade that first step toward the jury of.

But I've been doing that since I was in college. Actually, I I started back way in the early two thousands. On wt. Do you want a 71 of the University of Illinois? And the first thing they ask me that I liked to do was or what I would like to talk about. I said movies if I could, and they said, Cool, Go review the 40 year old Virgin and I've been doing it ever since. I did not know that you're a P G u alumni. Yes, sir. Actually, thanks. And it is a college commercial radio station. Unlike a lot of college stations, you have to make money. You have to go out and sell advertising and you have to be a student to do that. And the amount of experience that you get. There is incredible, and it's still alive and vibrant today, which is really, really cool, right? Absolutely. Yeah, And I know that Ah, lot of my friends who you know, I graduated with somehow they're still sort of affiliated with radio that I've met doing radio there or they work in. Even print media still because in the last couple of years of my time at U of I, the paper and the radio station, which were owned by the same company kind of murders, and they just they became one in a lot of ways, so you were able to get a little more experience. I think that you might have thought initially. You know, if you just went in loving music, you would come out with an appreciation for writing about it as well as talking about it on the air. And I think that that It's invaluable, at least it with young people. You know when they're trying to find out what they really loved to do Sure, sure we didn't like the print people too much down there when we were ready. E just want to be honest with you. All right, that Z move on. Let's start get started tonight with Chicago movies. Now I'm talking about films. Filmed here in Chicago, not set in Chicago. That doesn't count. It's kind of like the difference between the TV show Mike and Molly, which is set in Chicago didn't film here. But the Chicago TV show's PD Fire Chicago met all those said in Chicago and filmed here in Chicago. That's what we're talking about. We heard the Blues Brothers music at the beginning. That I think it just made the city of Chicago looks so good on film. Right? It was It was great. Good and exciting on it showed. You know, obviously, the two main characters came from nothing right. You know they were two brothers that came came from nothing. And then you just get to see from the the pulling of Jake out of, you know Juliette's when he gets picked up all the way through to the end with the big chases, everything just made the city look good. They filmed throughout Illinois to make that movie happen. They used some other locations, obviously, too, but everything pretty much is the Chicago Land area. On Dino, that you know, if you have spent any time in downtown Chicago, you can't look around without missing a landmark from that particular film. I mean, they're just everyone so I think it's one of those films that granted. I grew up in Illinois, so I can relate mentally to the movie in terms of locations and, you know, getting the kind of see the exciting things On film, which, by the way, I'm a huge fan of great cinematography, and I actually think blues brothers is very well shot for both of action Chase movie as well as a musical. Andre comes to Chicago movies. You cannot, I think, have a list. Chicago films without having the Blues brothers, either at the top of the list or very close to it. And Lucas John Lucas, who did the movie was so proud that he got John Lee Hooker on film and all those blues legends. It was incredible something that I want to bring up about the movie Ah few years ago was the 20th..
