"That was his opening salvo. I mean, we must have had that conversation ten times over a long period because he was great about, as you know, about helping some of us back in the day, build our careers, and he wouldn't, he wouldn't talk to that guy, though. He did not like him. That's funny. It's kind of strange because I don't know if you remember this. I think it was maybe a couple years before he passed away The Associated Press. They had their phone list of all sports sports media people, agents, things like that. And it was somehow leaked on the Internet. And somebody got a hold of beano's number. And he would feel calls day and night from all these random people. You know, that some would call the heck on they'd say, hey, did Ron Paulson win the highs again? Things like that. And they'd hang up on them. But he would talk to most of them. He would say, okay, do you want to talk college football? Let's do it. And he was, you know, that's kind of the guy he was. He was pretty open. So the guy from bessemer must have really pressed the wrong button. Yeah, I don't know what it was. John, I would love to have an imaginary really love to have a real conversation with being today. And I can only imagine and I'll ask you to sit in for him. What he would make out of the current state of college football right now. To be honest, Paul, I think he would be at certain points, I think he would make some predictions in the book and I don't want to call him those redones, but he did see a lot of this coming. And he mentioned one of the big things that we mentioned in the book was the college football leave the commissioner. There was going to come a time he predicted with the expansion of television, conference, realignment, you're going to be paying players, one of these days, might even be free agency, that type of thing. You're going to need a central authority figure. It's going to be able to sort of deal with all these things. And he saw that firsthand because he lived through when president Kennedy was assassinated, there was mayhem because it was a Friday before the end of the college football season. One of the last Saturdays of the year and you had people going back and forth while we playing, are we not playing? Certain conferences played. The other ones didn't. And there was no there was no sort of authority figure like Pete roselle who can make those decisions. And that planet in vino's mind that he wanted he thought that there needed to be someone who could take control of this situation. So I have a feeling if he was here today if there was a way we could patch him in, he would say, I was right. We're going to need a commissioner to lay everything that's going in this sport. Finally, I would like to deal with his influence. And I know that you know the whole story because friends of mine like Tim Brando and others have always argued that he really was one of the not only a trailblazer, but one of the most important and influential people in the history of the broadcasting, you alluded to ruin our age and the famous Texas Arkansas game, which he had a big role in. But how would you describe the influence that he had and maybe still has in some ways by what he left behind? I think he was definitely definitely a visionary and that regard he saw the way things were they could be set up. You mentioned Texas Arkansas on 69. All the other things. We mentioned in the book that him and ruin our lives were kind of like a two man selection committee when they were trying to set up those one burst two games after 69 worked. So he saw he actually had a playoff plan in 1971 that he pitched pitch the room, he pitched the NCAA TV committee. They kind of kicked him out of the room. They didn't think it was viable because it had pay per view. And all this crazy stuff in it, but a lot of that's coming true. And I think, you know, you mentioned Tim Brando, great guy. I want to be great friends and college game day. That's another big thing that the development of a college football pregame show that was just sort of out of this world for an hour. Now it's three hours. And I think that you see things like that. I mean, he saw those things coming. He argued for him and he fought tenaciously to have them all going. And I think that everything that's going on nowadays, beyond game day, I mean, your show, all the other networks that there's even an SEC network, a LongHorn network, a Big Ten network ACC network. I think he would be he would marvel at all these things, but he would also sort of sit back and he would have that smile on his face and say, you know what, I saw this coming. No doubt. He deserves so much credit. John, a pleasure to have you on. We have thoroughly enjoyed this. All the best with the book. And a very happy and Merry Christmas to you. Thank you, hi. Thank you very much. You bet. John Lucas joining us. I haven't suffered enough the story of being no cook's amazing life..

"A lot of young people have been deprived, I think, of being exposed to what are the most colorful characters in the history of college football. He has been a cook. He's been gone, I think, about ten years. But at one time, was probably the most talked about figure at this network in many others because of the way he described and expressed his opinion about the sport so many of us love. John Lucas has, I'm going to let him tell the story, put together a book with, under the headline, haven't I suffered enough. If you know being our story, you know where that came from. And unbelievable career in sports PR and television. He's a historian a writer and John, thank you very much for joining us. It's a pleasure to remember maybe the most colorful character in the history of college football broadcasting. How are you? I'm doing great Paul. You know, beno said that the two greatest honors in the American can have or to win the Heisman Trophy to be the guest star on an episode of Colombo and I think as someone who's followed college football covered college football in my life, this honor of being on your show is right up there. Well, thank you. I still laugh the first time I read the comment. And I'll let you set it up. I can't remember the year. There was a baseball, it was the hostages, was it not coming back from Iran? And I'm going to let you pick up the story about how you got the title of this book. February 1st, 1981, vino was working for CBS sports and the publicity department. And he was at the NBA All-Star Game, which was in Ohio, the richfield coliseum. And that morning, Billy coon, the commissioner of baseball made an announcement that all the returning Iran hostages would be getting Major League Baseball lifetime pass that good as many games as they wanted the rest of their life. And there are still a bunch of writers, TV people at this hotel, getting ready for the NBA All-Star Game and being able was famous for his one liners. And they asked him, what do you think about this? And right off the top of his head, he goes, haven't they suffered enough? Maybe hard to understand the humor of it in the moment, so many years later, but it's one of the funniest lines even 40 years later. John tell us about your relationship with this iconic figure. And how this project came about. Well, Paul, the project actually predates me by two years. He started it in 1975 after he spent a year doing publicity for the dolphins. And being a cook and Don Shula didn't work out. So that job kind of went in the wet and scrap heap. And he came up with this idea to write a book. A couple years fast forward, he tried to put this thing together. He had all the notes together, but he couldn't write. The way the way you saw him or heard him on TV or the radio that just couldn't translate to the written word. So he tried with a couple other writers. It didn't work. And a couple of years later, this is about 1995. I'm an 18 year old kid in high school. I wrote him a letter. And I said, I wanted to get into sports media, via sports writer, specifically cover college football, maybe do some TV and radio. And sure enough, he wrote me a letter back. We got to be good friends. And I got out of school, graduated from Notre-Dame, 1999 and he asked me if I would help him put this book together, which was kind of a shock. I really didn't have any buy lines any notoriety myself, but he kind of he mentored me and he appreciated my writing ability and for some reason the two of us were on the same wavelength, whether it's college football, military history, our politics movies. I got his sense of humor and the way he talks the way he came across and we just it was a perfect partnership. John, I'll try to keep my own interactions with some out of the conversation because there are so many and I just remembered as you were describing him. We used to call I used to call him occasionally and correct me if I'm wrong, but he lived at a hotel or a motel in Pittsburgh. And when you called him, he answered the phone Colombo, right? Correct. Yeah. He had a famous way of answering the phone. And it depends. Most of the time you get detective Colombo, sometimes you get Steve Maguire from Hawaii 5 O, and occasionally, depending on the mood he was in, you would hear you would get maybe even doctor Quincy. Three great TV shows of that era. So as you began the project, obviously it took some time and as death didn't help. But too many stories to mention, but what stood out in gathering this lifetime of antidote. It's funny. Most people, if you think of being a cook, and I'm sure a lot of the viewers, listeners, your show, if you say that word, it's been a clip that name, they will come up with two things. They will come up with ESPN, the outtakes, or the Bron paulus prediction. And once I got into this, you know, I learned that he was so much there was so much more to the guy than most people know. I mean, not even just the on air stuff. I mean, his life and publicity, all the different jobs that he had. And he really was quite a mover in a shaker behind the scene in the world of network television. I mean, he had the ear of quite a few presidents. He was very close with ruin our leg and a couple other people. And it's really fascinating when you read this book and you find out that the way we watch college football today, the way it's covered and not just college football pro football other sports, he had a direct hand in all of those things. I mean, a lot of those people that are a lot of people are on the air today, people that have blogs or podcasts things like that. Ruin our put the number one college football fan in America on the air at ABC sports in 1982. And be no kind of broke the mold and he said everybody else up to be able to engage their love of the sport and talk about it. So that's really one of the most interesting things from my point of view is all the stuff that he did behind us seems to get himself into that position to get on the air. It was a million to one chance. I think him powered herself, maybe Jimmy the Greek were the only three guys who didn't have a traditional media background educational background sports writer. They just got on TV and the world fell in love with them. You mentioned Ron Paul, I'm testing my memory. He was a quarterback at Notre-Dame and being predicted. How many Heisman trophies for him? He said he was going to win at least two husbands. Did he ever come close? No, he didn't come very close at all. I thought he was predicted three or four. He said too. We get into in the book, where that prediction came from and why he made it. He felt very confident for a number of reasons, and I'm not going to give it, give it all away. But he goes into it. We spend a good two pages two full pages on that prediction where it came from what his rationale was and I think a lot of college football fans would be fascinated and they will probably look at it and say, you know what? Going on 30 years later, this guy was kind of right. I mean, I could see the logic behind it. John, he used to come on our program back when we were in Birmingham. And he would take phone calls. And he had an experience with one guy. I can't remember the guy's name. He lived in bessemer right outside. So after that, he would say beno cook is our guest here on this Monday. And the first thing I would say, I'm not talking to that guy from bessemer..

"Like to say this is one of the four shows I've allowed to watch. My wife enjoys it too. The only one. Well, thank you. Yeah. Yeah, I heard I was watching other sports show today. And you and who that damn Orlovsky? Right. Boy, you guys were rough on urban. I don't know if that was called for. That Ross or what are your thoughts on urban? It was a great coach for Ohio State. He left the program in great shape. Seamless takeover with a day, no complaints. Well, thank you for helping us understand urban better. Wayne is up next. Hello Wayne. Hey, Paul, how are you doing? Thanks for taking my call. Thank you. I hope this is not a deep look at question. McCall is due to being miles day and it's close to Christmas. I had to do some early shopping Christmas normally a week to day before Christmas. But I just want to tell you before I ask you about the final 14s, this won't tell you that you have one of the best shows that there is and I've waited a long time to talk to you and your well worth it. So thank you very much. Great. Appreciate that very much. Yes, sir. Being a Bama fan. And then also, I'm also a Cincinnati fan because I'm kind of an underdog fan and they are to underdog even though they're undefeated team. And hopefully bammel will not treat them like that because it's kind of a scary situation, but my question to you is with Bama and Cincinnati playing the first game. Does that give both of those teams to play their best ability without worrying about oh, we're playing Georgia, which is the best team in the nation. You know, supposedly, or may have been, does that give an edge to that first first game? And that's what I want to ask you about. Thank you very much. I appreciate your comment. I don't think it's a major factor. And yeah, there's no question if you're in the second game, you're probably paying attention to the first game. But I think as you prepare for a game, the last thing you're thinking about is you're about to face an opponent is who you'll be playing next. Thank you very much for the call. Larry is calling good afternoon, Larry. What's up? Serious, man. Sound real serious. Well, I'll see you. I'm trying not to be. Let's find something. Not so serious to talk about. Hello, my good moon of bad mood. You want to empower one. Well, Larry, cut me some slack. I mean, one of my favorite coaches got fired last night. Oh, no, you can't.

That's the first win in the championship for walkie since two thousand eighteen after earning its fourth win in five tries against the jaguars this season twenty point performances from h l thirteen. Take john lucas with twenty two points. And the andre golsen with twenty alad had a double double for m. k. e. with team points ten boards. Joss thomas also had thirteen points. I went seventy nine and h l. Play eight and ten overall and the panthers get to go back to the 'nother center to take on number two right state for tuesday's quarter-final matchup two teams met earlier. This season was just two weeks ago. I remember listening to that first. Game chris collins. Jim brown do a heck of job. I remember that milwaukee just wouldn't go away right state had long streaks and here goes walkie with a long streak. it's very good panthers. Squad and the raiders. Play perfect to knock off milwaukee once and for all so again tuesday march second. It looks like this all these games already. Espn plus you got number. One cleveland state hosting number ten purdue. Fort wayne you've got number two right state hosting number eight milwaukee. You got number three oakland hosting youngstown. State the sixty two penguins got number four norfolk kentucky hosting number five detroit mercy so all three ohio teams still alive and both michigan teams are alive too but hey we're in ohio so again. Let's say all four top teams. When cleveland stay right state oakland and k. you the highest rating c gets the lowest remaining seeds. So that'd be cleveland state of kentucky and then rice table get oakland which teams split up in michigan and the championship game is tuesday march ninth the semi finals on espn u. than espn two and then the championship game will either be on. "And that's how Jeff Jeffrey Epstein then took that money made more money off of it, and he was one of the people that led to Jeffrey Epstein becoming so disgustingly rich and powerful. So that connects Jeffrey Epstein to Gullane Maxwell through her father far earlier than we thought they had connected before. Okay, so that's really, really fishy because and I mean, again, Everybody is wondering how did because the story about Jeffrey Epstein? It's like, how did he Get people to just hand over all this money. Well, if you think about it, you know the other people that are connected, very, very rich people who were connected to Jeffrey Epstein, who gave him money. It seems like Jeffrey Epstein did a very good job of collecting dirt on these people in orderto have some some sort of leverage over them. Right. So do you. Do we think that he had some? He had the dirt on Elaine Maxwell's dad. I mean, one would have to imagine Right, like, obviously, I don't know. Am G sorry. Anything is possible, like, right. We don't have details, and we don't know for sure. But this account and again the way we know this is This possible financial connection between Jeffrey Epstein and Dylan Maxwell's dad were allegedly disclosed by this model scout Guy Jean Luc Brunel and Holly Feel free to jump in. If you have details, because sometimes I know you've got random. Weird, rich, creepy people knowledge. It's a talent. Thanks. No, but I know you've been paying attention to the story as well. He revealed this stuff in conversations 20 years ago, and according Teo, wait, who did So John Lucas Brunelle character talked about these ties between Epstein and Maxwell 20 some years ago. Quote this is one of the One of the Jean Luc Bernal's former close associates told The the sun quote the son being the tabloid Jean Luc was telling acquaintances how Galanes Father, Robert Maxwell was one of the reasons why Jeffrey had so much money, he said Maxwell had been one of Epstein's early investment clients. I assumed that is Jean Luc Burnell, saying, I assumed that Maxwell had invested in Epstein, who then used that money to make his own. So that's fascinating. An eye opening because that puts Ah, connection between the two of them far earlier than we had first thought. Applause was rousing applause. Would you say everybody understood what he meant by that, or there were other guys going? Who is this guy? Combination of both, but I mean, John Lucas explained it make a Google on the looking up. He had a great great career. He did so he's always been unknown John for 20 years. Very passionate. Very As a good touch on how the league has evolved, and that's why I think he he told him that, But, you know, he certainly also wasn't one appointee punches. It is kind of closer to how he was saying at least and like honestly it did bother me. This whole episode is Real Bad. Real bad right add. Just call him Robert. Come on American. This is an American television show infringement. He's got to. You've got to recognize that if we've never talked about it at this point you have John Luc Picard on an American television show as a British guy playing a Frenchman. Because he's a good actor he's been in the business for so long there you go there you go. Well Louis arrives at the House. He has set up a meeting between John. Luke in the Board of Governors Yeay or not John Lucas actually a little perturbed but at least he agrees to go listen to their proposal. Act For beverly is giving the US drive to. "Me. Just go sit outside ride that lasted two years with the spurs he averaged eighteen point three rebounds first year and seventeen point three this all all right. I got it wrong then. I thought i heard a second. I thought it was much shorter than that. He's on the spurs with two years. I thought it was much john lucas david robinson yeah but wasn't john on lucas as the coach or was it popovich who who was it that took in rodman <hes> this was ninety three ninety four ninety four ninety five. I'll check it as the show continues unused to get older again. If you're listening earlier stu gods long for a time when we played outside and mom called us in for dinner to play missile command right before dinner. That's the the thing that happened on that so we will get in a moment to that rodman sound. I was promising you but i wanna go back to jerry jones feuding with ezekiel elliott saying publicly zach who and in two syllables getting an avalanche of z cou cou. I'm sorry zico yes. That's yes not who not zakho z. Coup is what he said because pollard has been a i guess okay is the cowboys replacement running hop started ninety six it was it was bob hill john lucas silva hair bob hill on the poll guillermo gear. Remember that silver the hair on bob hill. I am all decided to come back from vacation one hundred four honestly i'm trying to get to the interesting rodman stuff and everyone gets in my way with irrelevant things like do you remember this silvera hair on bobby hill so go ahead and play the sound of jerry jones and the over laugher pollock negotiator z polar zinc. Oh i don't they expand. That's a real thing as a sports writer. I've been in the company of coaches coaches and you want to ingratiate yourself to the coach so when he says anything that's the least bit funny you tend to overlap. That's just a thing it happens and i think that was in play here. I would blast reporters all the time because they would laugh it away. It was it was an overreaction. Anything shack said like everything he said they thought was the funniest thing thing in the world and it was far from funding right yeah so this is funny okay and i'm about to preface this with a bunch of commentary that if it were not about dennis rodman would be laughably fictional and ridiculous so the beginning of this story is dennis rodman round up before our country three of you know before the latest thing where our country's trying to develop a relationship of some sort <hes> with north korea's crazy dictator dennis rodman rodman went over there and he took a band of players who didn't really understand what they were getting into an almost all of them immediately regretted what it is they had done on and it is an interesting documentary but dennis rodman was on television. I believe it was on c._n._n. And he was defending with all of the players behind him scared okay like kenny anderson and glenn robinson. They're all like looking around. What have we done. What did we do here. We we decided to come to north korea with <hes> with dennis rodman. We were led here by dennis. Rodman and dennis rodman says don't worry. I got it guys. I'm gonna go on c._n._n. Now with all of you behind me and i'm going to defend our decision in in literally the least coherent way possible and you can see the fear and regret start sweeping line him as he does this during a c._n._n. Interview don't use these guys as a shield for you. Dennis listen listen. Listen listen. Let me the people on the moral role in the world. I'm going to be one. You'll guy behind the mike right now. We are the guys here doing one thing. We go back to america and take the abuse do you you know bruce. Will we take let me know will one one day one day open really game off the top rope said nothing it was just nonstop say one thing gibberish and he was right. He was one day donlevatar. Why are you so battle this stu gods. I can't answer that. That's a good one. Though i've been thinking about law b._c._c..
