"Inslee wanted to talk politics this afternoon. Northwest news radio's John lobert ini reports. Reporters gathered with the governor at the state capitol and the floor was open. I'm going to check in with you on firearms proposals. Our proposed ban on semi-automatic weapons is making progress while gun training for gun buyers is moving more slowly through committee. This type of gun safety measure has the biggest impact in reducing gun violence. It is the best thing that we have to reduce violence. There's legislation that would expand assistance by the state to food banks. Our food banks are now down to about 20 or 30% of their normal stock because of the expansion of need for nutrition in our state. And we need to have something there when they arrive. And the governor was asked why state workers are still under a COVID-19 vaccine mandate when Seattle and King County let those expire. We're looking at the science on this and we're looking at the disease. This is a disease that remains a dangerous disease. There's also legislation that would rewrite zoning laws, allowing Washington to build more housing. John lobert team, northwest news radio. Police would be able to chase after more known or suspected criminals under a bill that's passed its first test in Olympia. The bill would allow more violent or potentially dangerous crimes to qualify for situations where a chase is allowed. It would also change the rules so an officer would only have to inform a supervisor about a chase, or current law requires supervisor approval. Opponents of House Bill 1363 say the limits on police chases were put into law in the first place to make communities safer by stopping dangerous pursuits when they aren't always necessary. Amber gold ate a ma who is 12 year old daughter was killed by a man in a stolen vehicle, told the public safety committee. This man, a convicted felon, who was out of jail on his own requirements for another crime, he committed a burglary, and the police had stopped him, but he fled in a stolen vehicle, and the police could only watch. One Democrat voted against the bill while the other members from both parties voted in favor. The growing frustration over that whopping $12 billion plan to fight homelessness in King County, during a presentation of the 5 year plan today, Seattle mayor Bruce harrell called it too expensive and short on details. "Strong words. Following a ride along with a mental health crisis team in Seattle, the congressman answered questions about China. Got to be cautious about how I say this. Large country spy on each other. Adam Smith, chairman of the House armed services committee, says the two superpowers need to start talking. We have got to do a better job of communicating with each other about what the rules of that engagement will be because there is the risk of miscalculation and overreaction on both sides. China is already flipping the script. Now accusing the U.S. of flying high altitude balloons over its airspace ten times last year. I'll tell you China has been a little reluctant. Congressman Smith says efforts have been made by the U.S. to talk with China. I know correctly the Secretary of Defense wanted to have a conversation with his counterpart in China, but China said no. So I think we've got to get some international pressure here to force China to restart having conversations about this because it can be a risky and dangerous situation. And nobody wants that. "A new brand of digital literacy on display today in Edmonds for governor J inslee, as northwest news radios John lobert tells us, students are now being taught how to fact check and spot misinformation. The mere thought of misinformation touched a nerve with governor J inslee. We got an information from professional journalists that had some obligation to the truth. Now your generation gets misinformation right left and center all the time. At metal Dale hives certified teacher librarians are now the connection to a higher level of specialized information literacy and digital skills. Aaron Duffy is one of them. Look through that data in 90 seconds. So instead of reading a whole article, you're looking at who wrote it, where they from, what are they representing and why did they write it? The governor sat down with students to hear what they had to say. Students like senior Rowan Macaulay, just taking a step back and looking like, okay, why is this worded like this or why is this headline make me feel like this? And then going further into that. Teaching where and how to find the truth. It's there, you just have to look in the right places. John lobert, northwest news radio. "Profit. I'm John lobert, what the coffee giant had to say. It's 6 o'clock. From ABC News. I'm Daria albinger, the Senate comes together on a bill's supporters say he is designed to make certain veterans whole again. The pact act, which helps those exposed to burn pits and other toxins past 86 to 11 majority leader Chuck Schumer. Finally, at long last, America lived up to its ideals by saying to our veterans who have been exposed to toxic chemicals from burn pits, we have your back. Pennsylvania's pat toomey was among the Republicans who proposed amendments to close a budget loophole. It's a trick. It's a budget trick that allows for more spending in unrelated areas. The bill will now head to President Biden's desk. The polls are closed in three of the 5 states holding primary elections, including Kansas, where voters are also deciding a referendum on abortion rights. It all comes down to the turnout. I can tell you activists on both sides have been canvassing. They've been door knocking, urging people to get out to vote. The lines here at this polling location have been wrapped around the building. We've seen so many people go inside trying to vote on this particular amendment because Kansas becomes the first state in the nation to put the question of abortion rights directly to voters after the fall of roe versus wade. ABC's Rachel Scott in Kansas City, we do have one projection for you so far. It's in Michigan where incumbent Gretchen Whitmer is projected to win the democratic gubernatorial primary. As King County experiences hotter, drier summers as the result of climate change, there is a greater potential for devastating wildfires. The plan includes everything from checking roof shingles, training local departments to fight wildfires and evacuation plans, fire expert Kathleen Farley wolff says the Oregon fires in 2020 spoke volumes. They had a much drier spring than we had, but also there was just very intense drying that occurred in August and September, and that was really what primed it. And history tells us huge wildfires have hit the western slope before. We have an outstanding noxious weed program that will help remove invasive plants, some of which can be particularly flammable.
