"Slay. I'd say, you know, in this calendar year, 58, 70, whatever. Yeah. For us. That's Jews. This calendar year, I would say that you come into your power a little more. That's something to be proud of. Thank you very much. Then I'll take it. I am more in my power as I'm way closer to death. So that's gorgeous. How you feeling, Andy? How does it feel to be with an older woman? Meaning a woman who has gotten older who has gone, right? Still younger than me. That's true. That's true. Still useful even though I would say you look younger than me. I think we both look. I think we both look young. Deceptively. Deceptively. Which I love because I'm all about deception. But truly, if I did not use moisturizer, I would look like the crypt keeper. Oh my God, you would never look like a crypt keeper. Your cheeks are too full. You know crip keeper. He's all gone. Boy said goals if I don't use my moisture. Die, sir. Okay. Okay. We're gonna blame it. Sorry, that's more like what the crypt keeper sounds like. That's not nice in people's ears. Remember it's my birthday. It's true, you know what? We made a vow 11 years ago. I promised on her birthday would not try to do the crypt keepers voice. And I'm sorry I failed you this year, Naomi. It's okay. It's okay. You were really good for 7 years in a row. Naomi. Yes. On this special day of days. Yes. We have a special episode, because we have a good friend on this one. You got a dear friend, a truly wonderful soul who has taken us in in Los Angeles, the hysterical, the brilliant Jennifer Friedman. Jenna is a writer, a comedian. Perhaps you know her show soft focus on Adult Swim. Perhaps you saw the Borat sequel that she co wrote. And was Oscar nominated for Oscar numb baby. But right now, you can watch Jenna's new show indefensible on Sundance TV and it is in the true crime space, but it is smart. It is incisive. It is educational. She's basically taking to task and calling out somebody's crazy. Not just what these people have done, but how they've managed to get away with it. I'm telling you. I'm telling you you will be infuriated, but you will also laugh. And if that's not living, I don't know. Yeah, if that isn't life in 2021, then I don't know what else would be a better avatar before existence. Right. Now Naomi, where can people see this? They can see it on Sundance TV. Hell yes. The AMC plus app. Great. All right. And just like get in there, find it, make it happen, watch it, okay? No excuses. It's so great and Jenna. I mean, she's out here directing this thing, getting that edit together. This is her baby, okay? This is her baby. You've got to at least say, I saw your baby and your baby is cute. Do you think we cracked Jenna? I don't think we cracked her. No, God, no, it's so funny for someone who is a dear friend, no he didn't crack her. I think it's because she is a cracker that can't be correct. Holy shit. Okay, now that? Was your birthday gift to me? You saying a cracker that can be cracked? That shit, I'm dead. I'm dead. That is wild and gorgeous and beautiful. And that is a real tender gift. Who hold on, let's just sit in it for one more second. Cracker, I can't be correct. Oh my God. I can't wait. Now before we get into Jenna though, I think we need to tell people about what we be doing off the free feed. Oh, yeah. So yes. We have a Patreon. It helps support. I would say 90% of the show. Absolutely. And twice a month. We're coming at you. With episodes that are just me and Naomi. We're spilling tea. We're recommending movie shows and music. We're taking you behind the sick curtain of showbiz behind the sick curtain of our relationship. I won't call that a sick card. I would say the sicker in the show biz or perhaps the beloved curtain of our love. Healthy curtain. There's a pretty much I would say, I would say, I would say pretty healthy curtain. A sick curtain curtain a Jane curtain. The options in this relationship. I know that was more free. That was more you. Thank you. Making a Jane curtain referenced. I said, who's this for? Angel background. After he gave me a cracker who could be cracked, I had to give him back something nowhere near as nice. But the point is the patriot had a two episodes a month for just 5 books. We are having fun. We're communicating. You're getting a deep dive with us on all sorts of things that we don't cover here because, you know, usually we're answering questions with a guest. Yeah, and it really does help support the show because we do all the work ourselves. Yes, absolutely. You know, mostly Andrew, I would say, you know, the editing of the booking. This mixing the engineering, you know? And so honestly, every bit helps every Djibouti shirt ubi help. Yeah. And before we get into it, I just want a quick plug for my other podcast beginnings. Can you believe him? Tupac has been fucking killing it with this show. Doing some really great interviews. So basically, on the show, I do deep dives into the childhoods and early lives of artists I admire. And just in the last year I've talked to people like Ron Moore, the creator of the new Battlestar Galactica, Michaela Watkins, who is a guest on this show. It's been on every TV show in the world. Ian mackaye of fugazi, and coming up, this is why I want to just put a little plug out here because the 12th anniversary is coming up next year. Andy's been with this podcast longer than he's been with me. Okay, this is his longest relationship. I just did some amazing interviews. John linnell, they might be giants coming up. And Rebecca gibney, a wonderful New Zealand actor who you co creator have also this Netflix show wanted, which is just brilliant. And those were really great. So I just wanted to, I don't know, I feel I feel a little shamed, but I'm also ashamed. I feel proud. I think I do really good interviews on that. You do great interviews. The people who have come on have been loving it, the listeners are loving it. You put a lot of work in honey, you dive deep. You're like an indie rock Dr. Phil. Oh no, don't know. He's bad, but I couldn't think of like another person that other people would know. You like an indie rock a young girl and saying like an indie rock, Doctor Oz. I'm like, no, no, not that one. Either. You're an indie rock. You're an Indian rock, doctor mangela? It's getting worse. Oh boy. You know what? We are off the rails and we need to get to Jenna, okay? Hey, before we do, happy birthday Naomi. Thanks, Andy. Is it because of my birthday do I get to say it? Roll it..

"Alphabet in addition to those characters. Yes and so. This is something that your listeners might have seen us rate and try different things because if you think about presenting all of this information on on a pretty small mobile screen typically. There's a lot that we want to give you at once. We want to give you the characters. We want to give you the meaning. We want to give you a way to learn about how these characters sound and we also want to give you the opinion and you'll see different ways that we we try to to integrate those that make sense again without overwhelming learners but giving them enough to again feel like they're making progress to start piecing together writing with meaning with sound and it's not easy especially on one screen where we don't have a lot of space and and it it. It's tricky to kind of balance all of those features for learners who have really different motivations especially chinese is a good example where we have lots of learners. Who really want to build up like a written fluency. They want literacy in the language to maybe especially if they want to study or live in china but for other learners. Who are maybe interested for more family reasons or really want to feel conversational language. The writing system might not be what's drawing them to the language or or what is necessarily their interest and so whenever were balancing all of these features we want to do is best for most learners Again without overwhelming them yet very cool and then you mentioned people have sort of different motivations bring them to language learning and i've seen a lot online about how apps like dueling are being used to civically for language revitalization activism which is very cool. What can you tell us about how you work with speakers of marginalized and endangered languages. Yeah so we have a history of this for years of working really closely with the communities some selves to develop language courses and there's kind of been a combination of ways. We've done this. So sometimes the groups might come to us Like we worked with the hawaiian group. Command may have these are Schools in hawaii. That wanted to teach hawaiian to hawaiian children in the schools. There and say they had already developed a lot of online infrastructure and tools themselves and so this was great like synergy this combination of their expertise and interest and like tech savvy with our existing tools and platforms. And so so. There's we now offer hawaiian chorus. We also offer a novel. Ho course which again we worked with the navajo nation and educators there to to build the navajo course and we. There are several other language courses that we offer that are underrepresented or maybe just under taught and underrepresented languages or indigenous or endangered. And so these include like johnnie which is an indigenous language from South america with people Speakers and whole bunch of places. I think argentina brazil. Bolivia there's there's a lot of paraguay specifically to paraguay. Because i was interested in guarani and the people in power guy where like what because very few people outside are interested in studying it. I didn't even know there was guarini. I'm going to have to get on that. yeah yeah nicole. It'll be a good fit for you. Because the gluttony course is designed for spanish speaker so you need to know spanish in order to learn any again. This is thinking really about those communities there who are most likely to be interacting with guarani speakers. And so what are the we really think about. Who the course is serving. When we're making decisions about you know well. Why don't we have any from for english speakers and maybe we will one day but really the the main community we want wanna serve with. That course is spanish speaking community so for these underrepresented languages. I'm guessing you're not using some sort of text to speech technology in order to generate the sentences that we hear. So you're working with Native speakers of all of these languages to build up the sentences that are used in the courses yet. This is a great point. Band traditionally for for most of our courses. We had been using text to speech services from amazon. But these these kind of right. We're teaching many more languages than a lot of these companies are prepared to help us move from text. To speech. And so for languages like navajos like yiddish. Like hawaiian where. We can't do this automatic translation we have our contributors right so the native speakers the teachers from these communities themselves doing those and so earlier this year. We release the yiddish course which was really interesting. Linguistically for a lot of reasons but including the group had to decide which dialect and which accent to use to teach in the course. And so the recordings that you'll hear in the course are from the actual course creators themselves yiddish speakers who designed the curriculum. And i think we have some examples from that yet case that you mentioned latino a couple just to get an idea of what it sounds like kim sti. So that's where do you come from in the is mom bubka and that's where is my bubka bubka. Does that get translated gets translated the same english. So those they send you what we're hearing there. The yiddish speakers that assisted in the development. Of course right. Yeah not just assisted. They wrote the curriculum. So these were really talented group of yiddish english bilingual's who were really they. They have like a deep knowledge of both. Like the culture and the language and how to teach yiddish. So of course knowing language doesn't always mean that you know how to teach it but this was a really talented group of teachers from the lots of communities who recorded these so cindy back on the very first episode of spectacular vernacular. We talked to John linnell they might be giants and he talks about how he had been spending the pandemic learning latin on duo lingo and that led to him making a whole ep full of songs written in latin. So could you tell us. I mean since the you know especially the past year or two trends that have emerged in the use of dueling. Go and all these different languages. So there's so many interesting things that happened you know. We all found ourselves in this awful situation at the start of the pandemic and we look for all kinds of ways to support feeling connected and building community. And maybe doing things. We've been meaning to do for a long time. And so i think this is what we see. In our language data at jalingo is that there was this huge influx of brand new learners to the platform in march and april twenty. Twenty that In those first weeks thirty million new learners joined to lingo. I loved seeing the distribution of the languages that people wanted to study and so of course there were lots and lots of people who were suddenly learning from home or they're in person. Language classes had been forced to turn into online classes over night and so there are lots of french and spanish learners in the us for example that we're using do lingo to supplement or help with their language study but for even more people. They took advantage of this time to study language. Not really personally. I've meaningful to them and so we can see for example in ireland. In the last year irish has been the most popular language to study in ireland surpassing spanish for the very first time there And so the way. I think of that kind of movement is that you know. We were really seeking ways to be engaged. Be a part of our community and for people in a place like ireland this mentha. You know there's this thing that's been happening in my community i've been hearing about. Maybe this is a chance to connect with this part of myself with this part of my culture and we we see that kind of all all over the world that there is a really big increase in interest in east asian languages especially and korean all over the world and so i think this is people wanting to connect with their interests and their cultures in in a way that realized they finally.

"It's almost confusing. Because she's wearing something else because it's so cold and it it's it's a really sad story honestly except it's almost like though that feeling of like with photos of people on wikipedia famously. You look nice today. Remarking honest delgates wikipedia photo. Which i think is still i should look it up. I wonder if it's the same terrible photo or like I just grabbed a copy of the difficult to find Because of kirks episode nine ended up wanting to rewatch gigantic a tale of two johns. And i should send you the photo that they have of john. Linnell 'cause with still getting you find that the best photo they could get in this case. This is probably the best we case kelly. She belonged and really cute her. Yes but describes like one fourth of survival. Sorry that's true but she did have a purple streak pair. And that's probably why people are like. I remember purple. Kelly the talked about her a bunch. You never see her like you found. This article is stuck. We'll put in show notes from something called chichi dot com and it is survivor or colin. What is a purple it. And how can fans spot it. And so just going down a little bit here when purple kelly and Naoka mixing quit the villain. It was late enough in the game that they both made the jury. Wow janka name is still remembered. Years later for her villainous antics purple. Kelly has become one of the. Most forgettable castaways reasons because in the eleven episodes of survivor that she was in purple kelly received. Just one confessional. The camera prior to her vote. She had no story arc and hardly made any moves in the game. It's really and What's his name john. Jock jar john. Ever whoever the winner was was like her best friend and he was just nice to everybody. And i think unfortunately dearly departed purple. Kelly made the show a lot better. Because it's the seasons where the The terrain is genuinely very dangerous. That aren't very good because it's much more fun to watch people think i'm thinking of this one that might be. I wanna say like even like the third very early season and you could tell they were still trying different things out and there's one where it's basically like what i remember boy scout camping like there's one with the gotta like Like it's not very well. Shod gotta like walk on logs and there's a lot of that kind of stuff sort of as you say it's before they seem to really fully even as as we saw early on with richard hatch. It seems like they still hadn't gotten what we tune in for is not always the eyeball eating. It's the you know figuring out who's gonna be. Which kind of character. And how they make deals and stuff and then one african say kind of a guy has no one african american lady. I really like kind of like a slightly heavy ish. She's been back for some all stars right. Sirri sirri must be surreal. Yes she's terrific. There's other ones you just love. Because they're a train wreck you go enjoy them for their disordered eating you know. Oh god what's your name sugar. No sugar no sugar sugar and the gal the burlesque. Gow who's the Never mind i'm not gonna talk about this but there's the one one lady who's very very slender upsetting. Well i mean they get very very slender very quickly or at least they used to and they figured out a way to i survivor. I think was the first pioneered the way for southern gays because it it hit the cuanto on them or not as they just sound that way. Now i mean okay. We're talking about you talking about nick. Nick no no. No not nick blazer man just take off the blazer what are you doing. Because the producers have more control of the close then one would hope so. It's like is it really because of course like if you're doing a confessional you want something to associate to how you want people to especially when there's a lot especially when it's not like we're all macs with a pdf of who are pixar is a lot to keep straight at first and as you say there's a lot of you know pretty people and there's always people like. Who's the skeleton looking guy. Tie tie i tyler tyrone therese. There's the one the skinny guy who's been back for all stars. There's some people who are instantly recognizable known. I mean like like christian. I wanna say people But you need a way to be able to identify people i guess. And that's also why they tend to get a bit further as well. I don't know if this is the case. In the most recent season but the producers will kind of like egg people onto just like every reality show. This is not unique to survivor. The ono someone coming in and give me because giving away reality tv secrets. Oh there was a loud siren young unfortunately because of the patriot act. I cannot give you details but you are going to. You're going to you're going to jail for a very very long time. You'll be served squares. I would empty surprised and we need to get to chernobyl. But i need to ask you. Yes speaking of likable characters wal boy. I need to ask you to close up this threat. Thank you everyone for for visiting with us. It's a very strange week. One nestor's packed with protein. A one of like a veggie square that has as much vegetables and all those bullshit by easy and then i mean i guess warning wondering like how could i get it with a spoon. Like a weirdo. No no i can't. I got i got us the gullet. Just too big spoon. Alex di ya airport case spoon to see for you. It's really more like medicine. It's a medicinal is a prophylactic just jamming your face. Among musicians for being the guy who plays on all the Tom Waits, sort of the classic Tom Waits, middle period circus music albums. He's a multi instrumentalist. You placed a lot different kinds of horns, and he's going to be joining us and it Z. I'll be very interesting working with somebody who's got such a clear voice as a as a musician. "That's great. I have to say we've been on a million radio shows and the reverence with which you show the length and ending of a song. Is truly a recess of trade in in DJs, hosts radio people You want to know why that is beautiful, Like when you actually at the top of the thing where you play the entire song? Science is real, like, you know, typically, you know, people just hit the fader 30 seconds of bright Ford ends like we don't have that kind of time. I will tell you why that is. That's why I like Come love public radio Come for. Yes, I come from a public radio FM classical music background on my when I was in it when I was in my learning days of WB fo in Buffalo If I ever faded down one. Yeah, one note of a classical music. I once had an argument that I was. I was the news director at one of the Fae down the so Yes, it's the music so I could get a bulletin in there. I heard you can't run a bullet. You can't interrupted FM radio. So you were like the king of Dead air. You just let the song go all the way you wrote the whole song. Why don't we hear those songs? You actually let a little silence in that? You know our guy in Boston? I guess with Robert J lurks and we Just it would seem like he'd fallen asleep. You know, he was just quiet, Remember? Yeah, it was like that was no. What? That it suggests. A whole different kind of lifestyle is fantastic. I have a suggestion for a song for you. Sure. You know, you talked about the mistake with makeup of the sun. How about something about Pluto's Not being a planet, huh? Well, we do have we do have a song. We haven't learned how to perform in this group. But this arrangement is there we do have a song called How many planets Where we Dodge the question of how many planets there are by simply enumerating everything. Plan it or not, in the course of the song left the people to select the people decide. Yeah. What's your opinion on that? I don't think it really matters. You know, I don't think that it matters that slew. That was well, then we're in agreement, and you know, that's more or less. What were expressing in the scene? Who cares? I would if I were president have to say yes, there are eight planets, but it doesn't really matter that Ludo has been demoted was just It's just a name for something. Yeah. What's your favorite song? It's funny, and we do get that. And we are yet so I consulting, you know, how could you ask that? Oh, I'm appalled. I remember there was a radio station that used to advertise itself as one of two of America's great radio station. So you never had asked the guy with the second one is so well if we said it's a Tom Lehrer song with suddenly reveal something, Let's let's see if we get another song and what the left or epidemic could be which we dont Oh, come on.
