"Maximize the amount of time that passengers keep their face masks on American Airlines down 2.8% today Paramount delaying two Mission Impossible films into 2023 and 2024 I'm Charlie pellet that is a Bloomberg business flash What are the airlines going to have like syringes and just in checked on I gotta tell you I gotta be honest Carol I gotta tell you flying back from Canada on Thursday got an email on Monday actually I got an email from the airline that said due to supply chain issues we will not have food on this flight So buy your food ahead of time And they should say repeated again on the plane Supply chain issues I just think they don't want to do anything so I don't blame them All right well the new racial Bloomberg business week is out And it actually has some great advice to you on places to travel including Anguilla but I know I'm obsessed with that story You are That's because that's your that's your happy place It is my happy place All right Speaking of places happy or other the global cover story is about China and its second go round as host to the Olympic Games in Beijing and how really Tim this time around the world gets a very different China Joel Weber is editor at Bloomberg businessweek He joins us on the access line from Brooklyn Joel Before we get into this story I want to talk the cover here I'm holding it up I don't know oh you can see it on YouTube because Ari is amazing and already has the color up but it shows Xi Jinping in first place with the gold medal on the metal stand the podium Talk to us about how this cover came about Well we have been looking ahead at the Olympics for a while which obviously aren't underway yet And soon I think the world everyone in the world will start talking about them And so we had this observation though as we marched toward opening ceremonies that not so long ago opening ceremonies were in the exact same stadium in Beijing That was in 2008 That was the Summer Olympics Obviously this is the wind turtle Olympics And other than that almost everything about China and the world China's role in the world seems to have changed really since that O 8 moment So we wanted to as this little walk up talk about all of those things that have changed in China's role in it And it was putting G on the gold medal of pedestal really represents Well and it is a very different China And I love that this story Joel gets into specifically the role of China in our global economy where it was back in 2008 is very different from where it is today Yeah keep in mind that back then it was sort of like China was just really kind of coming to the world stage And it was basically like getting crowned as a member of that community And obviously if you just even think about it from an economic standpoint at that time in 2008 John Lewin Janet has been written in this story It had just passed Germany to become the world's third biggest economy Now it is basically nipping at the heels of the U.S. and depending on how some of these next few years go you know it could very well end up passing the U.S. even sooner than projected And the catch here is for all the things that have happened in the U.S. and actually just mentioning 2008 right after the games that was basically when the financial crisis started to unfold And I think one of the things that the story goes into is that China learned a lot from that financial crisis Obviously it affected China deeply But they actually it helped kind of mold their version of capitalism which obviously is slightly different than the rest of the world's version of capitalism But they basically looked at all of that and said hey we could do something better than the west has ever done Okay so they have that one Maybe we give that one potentially to them Joel but when it comes to human rights issues like that is still this difficult relationship that the world is having with China We want you to be part of the global economy We want to be able to tap your market We want to have these relationships but we were real problem when it comes to your human rights issues and abuses So that's going to be I think the big the big tension over the next few weeks as the Olympics start to get going and during the Olympics I think we'll probably see much discussion of this Obviously China wants to frame that differently and say look this isn't a human rights conversation even You're trying to make it something different than what it is And so I think we're just going to continue to hear more about that in the days and week ahead But obviously it's a sticking point and one of the reasons that the U.S. has taken the stance on the game said it is Well we actually got a chance to win myself to catch up with Janet paskin out of Hong Kong to talk about this story And here's a little excerpt from that conversation where she talks about the future of China Listen up everybody It's hard to look beyond COVID is the honest truth Because when you look at how China has done in the last couple of years and really the growth in its economy and this amazing recovery that they've been able to affect during the pandemic while everybody else has been in the doldrums.

"So we're cutting. So I hit F 7. Just keep watching. Stop texting me. So, you know, you're not alone in that. I get a lot of, I get a lot of people writing to me. And mostly texting. Oh, I thought it was special. John Lewin, who was prosecuting Robert Durst. About if I had committed a crime, but the last guy in America I'd want coming after me. He calls me all the time after day lines, including datelines that I didn't do to critique the work of the prosecutor. Really? So I was actually surprised like the phone isn't wrong today because usually on a Saturday and the phone rang and I'll see it's him. And I'm like, hi, John. And he says, look, I don't know what the law is in North Carolina. But I would have filed a three 14 motion. I'd be like, well, I don't know what that is, but I'm sure that I do realize. Well, don't people like my own mother will ask these questions because she knows that I know she knows my obsession with dateline. She knows I know Josh. She knows that and other people Katie bloom. We love her with her. She's a producer there. And my mom will say she'll ask me a question or she'll go, oh, you know, such and such here in town, Josh to do that. He's not a detective. She thinks, do people think that I can't really assign Josh the story? I know, but do people think that about you? They assume like, get Josh to arrest him. Why is he on the chemistry? Just happened. You should get on that. I'm like, I do not actually solve the crimes. I've told you. You're a superhero. There has to be an ending and then y'all. There's a whole police department, which is financed through your tax dollars. They have a whole bunch of people that actually go out and do this and they do a very good job. I have also a theory that people anytime I see what it doesn't matter who's whose episode it is, but anytime I see an attorney with a ponytail of mail, yeah, you're guilty. Just don't. I've never seen a long gray ponytail and it's like, that's the guy you want to get to represent. Two weeks ago, I did a story. I'm keeping up with the timeline here. Two weeks ago I did a story in Atlanta in which there's a guy with a long ponytail. I saw who I thought exactly the same thing, which is like grow up man. Come on. What are you doing? You don't even know what to do with your hair. Let alone how would you handle my criminal case? I'm also like, it's a little like, you know, you know, when your attorney smells like axe body spray, you're going to prison. You know, you know. When every time you see him, he knuckle bumps into Shakespeare..

NetApp Hewlett Packard Enterprise global foundries boxing Salesforce.com and Z scalar I'm Charlie pellet that is a Bloomberg business flash All right Charlie thank you so much Well a lot going on when it comes to COVID The EU has recorded at least 44 confirmed cases of the omicron variant in 11 countries does say that all the people infected are asymptomatic showing only mild symptoms Oxford saying there's no evidence that the new variant defeats the vaccine It developed with AstraZeneca Moderna predicting vaccines will struggle while the variant while the World Health Organization warned that the variant could feel a fresh surge in infections with severe consequences Oh this happening Carol while the U.S. CDC is considering a tightening travel restrictions and rules Germany taking a step closer toward making vaccines compulsory So we slew of news happening around the world as a result of this variant Feel like we've been here before All right so let's see what John Lewin has to say He's our health team editor at Bloomberg news on the phone from Boston John Lot going on trying to understand it's confusing financial markets It's confusing We mere mortals I don't know How do you today isn't it It's only Tuesday It's only two seconds I keep telling myself that because it feels much late in the week There's so much there's a great deal of confusing news going on out here It's difficult to make sense of And I think a lot of it has to do with say governments trying to be extremely cautious and to drug makers as well And yet I think that there is a certain amount of confidence about the effectiveness of vaccines and remains to be seen by the effectiveness of drugs as well So it's difficult to put this in all of it in context because there is news coming in from so many different directions But so far what the drug makers are saying at least most of them is that they think that the vaccines will be at least somewhat effective Against dolma crime What does somewhat mean though And in the context of I don't think we really know but the vaccine so far has been 96% effective So that's a really effective vaccine You think about it That's much more effective than the flu vaccine right Flu vaccine sometimes they tend to go up between 30 and 50% effective in a given year So there's still they seem very effective at keeping people out of the hospital We don't know I think the Moderna comments earlier may have grown a bit of a scare into people because they said they thought it would be less effective than we would neither new vaccine But that's not what the other drug makers are saying And then the other thing that countervailing that is that in the places where on the current cases have been seen they seem to be less severe And this is news that come out of both the EU and South Africa both of which have excellent surveillance and excellent healthcare systems Now does that mean that these are breakthrough cases in people who have already been vaccinated and so that's why they weren't severe or does it actually mean that it's a less severe virus It's very difficult to say or was it just the population that we've seen and was it younger people children people who usually don't develop Severe cases So there's a lot of data I mean it's not to say we'll never find the answer to these questions I think we will at some point But what have we known about omron I think it ended the vocabulary about 5 days ago right So there's still a lot to find out about this And the other thing to remember is here in the U.S. we still haven't seen a we will There's no doubt that we will But is that John because we don't do the same kind of sequencing that other countries do We did a story yesterday in which we sort of laid out some of the issues around the surveillance system here in the U.S. and we do a lot of sequencing There's no question we do a lot But the intensity of it the percentage of cases that are tested in sequences sequenced is lower than say some countries like the UK for example which is the star They are the world leader in this And which we probably ought to be trying to catch up to And actually South Africa is a very good job with this stuff as well South Africa huge health problems that have to keep an eye on stuff like HIV So they're very good with sequence in there And that's there's every reason that that's why they found there is because they're actually keeping such close eye issues like this So you have these things going on And We have to go Yeah I'm so sorry but I know we'll be talking to you again because it does feel like every day we're trying to make some sense out of especially in the last couple of days John laraman thank you so much Health team editor Bloomberg news on the phone from Boston Well it's.

"Both in the boardroom and amongst the management team came together looking forward not backward and concluded this was the best way for these businesses to move forward in 2021 So just the two of us talking because nobody's paying attention right now When you came in a little over three and a half years ago GE was a fixer upper I think it's fair to say It was a struggling company at least That's the way many building outside perceived it Did you always have this in the back of your mind if not as plan a as one of the plans you were thinking about I wouldn't say that we really had a long-term plan back in the fall of 2018 Beyond fixing the balance sheet again this deleveraging that we're well along with as well as getting back to basics operationally We knew we needed to do a better job day in day out with the businesses If we took care of those two priorities we knew we would have strategic options down the road And I guess you could say today we're down that road a bit In part because you needed the cash you needed to reduce the debt level And you got some cash flow G cast and things like that right Exactly right And part of what we're announcing is that as we move forward all three of these businesses will be investment grade rated companies The rating agencies have come out confirm that the meetings we had with them recently I think we're quite positive Reinforcing the view this is the best way for these businesses to go forward Okay now the naval gazing part of the interview which is the future of conglomerates I mean I must say just from my experience I've seen it and it goes up and it goes down over time The hot new thing we all want to be a conglomerate and then nobody wants to be a conglomerate Does this say anything more generally about putting together different lines of business in a large corporation David I'm going to leave that question to my colleagues at the Harvard Business school and others It's ultimately about performance I've been in companies where we did a number of things under one roof So I've seen it from a number of different angles But ultimately it's all about looking forward and being in a position to perform And I think for GE today on three separate bottoms will be at our best That's generally electric CEO Larry culp speaking with Bloomberg's David west and about plans to split GE into three separate companies There have been speculation about the move for years but now it's finally happening GE investors calling for the breakup and they called it long overdue Shares rose 2.7% after the announcement in the pre market this morning they're up 6 tenths of a percent Karen All right John thank you well at 6 29 on Wall Street and good morning I'm Karen Moscow along with John Tucker And let's get you up to date on some of the other news you need to know what this shower With U.S. futures moving lower this morning ahead of a key reading on inflation Two hours from now we get October's reading on consumer prices They're forecast to increase 6 tenths of a percent from last month and begin more from Bloomberg's vinyl down geodes The prior report showed consumer prices rose 5.4% on a year over year basis in September tying a 13 year high rapid inflation may abate next year according to the president of the Federal Reserve bank of San Francisco Mary Daly Maybe next summer In the meantime Bloomberg economics has transport delays tied to the coronavirus and semiconductor shortages will continue pushing a variety of course higher especially new and used autos Vinnie daltro Judas Bloomberg day break Great thanks Vinnie and we'll hear more from Mary Daly later this morning San Francisco fed president sits down for an interview with Bloomberg radio and television at 11 a.m. Wall Street time Meantime in China inflation risks are also rising China's producer price index climbed 13 and a half percent from a year earlier as the fastest base in 26 years At the same time consumer prices there rose one and a half percent That's the steepest monthly climate a year And John U.S. China relations are also in focus Bloomberg news has learned a summit between President Biden and Xi Jinping will take place next week We get more from Bloomberg's John Lewin Beijing There are so many issues on the table right now that it would be unlikely that we would see a substantial improvement in the relationship as a result of this meeting I think much more reasonable to hope that what this media accomplishes is some sort of stabilization in the relationship I think it's hard to think that Taiwan for example is going to get resolved anytime in the near future But I think the two presidents and the two countries would like to see that as tensions there continue It does not make the broader relationship unstable Bloomberg Sean Liu says there's no specific date yet for next week's virtual summit And turning to corporate news now shares of Tesla rebounding a bit That's after the wealth of Elon Musk suffered the biggest two day decline in the history of the Bloomberg billionaires index Let's get this story live with Bloomberg's Renee to young Good morning Good morning Don Elon Musk has lost $50 billion so far this week Tesla's route started when he asked Twitter followers whether to sell 10% of his stake in the company Then news emerged that his brother sold shares just The point is not that will help you trial. The point is is. You're saying that depending on how things go.
