Three people suck. Right, and I want to cry Happy Tears on my wedding day and I feel like a zoom. Made me cry sad tears. So depressing. So depressing. So to make it even worse. So most of those, those zoom weddings from what I have. experienced. Are just like you watch the ceremony the zoom and maybe afterwards there's like a small gathering of people to chat about the weddings. She went to this one where they literally did breakout rooms for how the tables have been set up. What am I gonNa, let so weird 'cause I actually like half the time actually talked to anybody that was able anyway and what's even weirder is it's Not like it was a wedding where she knew people. So it was her with a bunch of strangers that they like put her in private zoom with and I was like that's the worst part of a wedding. Why? Why did they recreate the worst part of a wedding worst part of a wedding I'm so glad that this was not your friend otherwise you would you would have to be very. Sensitive about how you talk about it but I'm really glad that this was like a friend of yours that went to the wedding. So you can talk about how fucking stupid this is it was like. I. Hope it's okay that I'm talking about it because they started problem that I make you self conscious now no, we'll answer probably it's such a specific thing I can't imagine. It'll recreate their feeling of being at a wedding and I'm here to tell you. I don't love that idea. Palley it's. Stupid. It's stupid. It's really Stephen. I've been very depressed about wedding stuff lately. I. CanNot Watch movies with weddings I cannot. Trust Angela like I'm yeah I'm not in a good wedding place right now. So maybe that's why I'm just being a little bitter bitch about it but I fell down a rabbit hole recently where I went on wedding read it to see like what other Kobe brides are doing and it made me so much more depressed. tobacco. They do Hannity I. Mean. So lots of people doing in weddings somehow someway, I don't get it but like giving out. Masks to their guests which like gray give me out. I. Read One girl was like I'm giving out bracelets that are color coded to indicate your comfort level with interacting with people and I cannot think of a more depressing just delay your wedding. Why are you doing a way of interacting hyperbolic everybody should just noted not interact right? Won't understand. Exactly. Like. Already wearing real wedding if I saw anybody wearing the red bracelet that's like I'm totally fine I'd be like Oh that person's like an asshole like doesn't mind potentially killing other people but also wants your all inside in this like big event where people are like breathing and moving around like your like your nose you're done. But the worst thing that I read was somebody wrote like so I've told all my bridesmaids. If you're feeling symptoms where a mask, if you have a fever stay at home and I was like if you're feeling symptoms wear masks, let that literally makes no sense praises how people die. This is how people die at large events lays your tell your bridesmaids they still have to come Brian Math, that's not how it works.

Microsoft Said to Be in Talks to Buy TikTok, as Trump Weighs Curtailing App
"President Trump has given Microsoft until September fifteenth to negotiate a deal to buy a piece of Tiktok that's a step back from trump's threat on Friday that he would ban the popular Chinese video APP, which he calls a national security risk. Let's bring in Greg Remai- Otas he's an editor at Reuters and was one of the reporters who broke the story and Greg Microsoft said in a statement that it's committed to acquiring tick tock but there are a few things that they I need to work out what are some of the main concerns over the next few weeks? So, they need to convince US national security officials that TIKTOK will not offer any backdoor to China's government were to be separated from its current owner by dance and be owned by Microsoft. All of TIKTOK data on American users is already stored in the United States, but because talks platform. It's algorithms is code are shared by other by dance APPs US officials need to be convinced that if the word to be a sale to. Microsoft. By then sworn, be left holding the keys and still have access to the APP let's break down just a little bit. So talks parent company, which is a Chinese company has taken steps in the past to try to appease US regulators on this front. But president trump still says it's a national security risk just remind US briefly how we got here. So we wrote a sexually broke news last year the Committee on foreign investment in the United States had opened an investigation into Tiktok. This is a US government panel, the scrutinises deals for potential national security risks. But of course what has happened since then is that relations between the United States and China have deteriorated. The president told reporters less last week that she was sexually looking at banning tiktok. But we reported yesterday that he will now allow this process to run, and if process will basically give forty five days for Microsoft and bind them to see the negotiate a deal that can you know a piece US national security officials So, this Microsoft deal would involve them buying tick. Tock Service here Canada Australia and new. Zealand so does that mean that this parent company would still operate the service in the rest of the world? How exactly what that work? That's the key question show. We understand that as far as those countries are concerned, Microsoft would be taking over but like the the. will be in the detail because this is being don show by will have no access no backdoor TIKTOK and to be fair that's probably why you show the president and some of his in the White House not being able to make up their minds because it's been like a very big question mark can you know that the -nology of Tiktok really be taken away from by them in a way that satisfies US concerns. Microsoft owns linked in, but otherwise, it isn't really well known as a social media space. How big of a deal would this acquisition of Tiktok for Microsoft I mean would then put it in the same space to compete more directly with the facebooks in the snapchat. So the world absolutely would be transformative and you may have noticed at the congressional hearings last week when. Four big technology company CEOS attracted the ire of lawmakers Republican, and Democrat Microsoft wasn't there. Beyond Lincoln Microsoft mainly focuses on. Business Software and and this you know and map that both hammer million. Users in the United States, would you know give Microsoft one of you the social media industries, gems, and? Turn them into. A very big player she'll be. To see how the president navigates the politics of this deal with his own base menu supporters are suspicious of big technology companies. They perceive any inherent bias against conservatives, social media, and at the same time you probably over the weaker many of his you know Republican supporters, Lindsey Graham, particular tweeting, making statements, encouraging the president to clinch the deal with Microsoft show. You be very interested to see how trump navigator this. Yeah, I mean some of the speculation is that trump backed off of earlier threats because it would alienate the party's younger users ahead of the election do you think that this deal will actually happen? The big unknown here is this technology issues we discussed this you sure absolute seperation back of suddenly has the cash to pay for this. The question is, can a deal be put together? That appeases the hawks in DC. That's Greg Room Yoda's editor of corporate finance in Deals at Reuters Greg. Thank you. Thank you.
Fresh update on "john legend" discussed on Happier with Gretchen Rubin
"Live that same purpose in my life without my book, and so when my book was pushed back, I had to find another way of still living my purpose and what I did was I started leading these twenty days of live meditation on Instagram and facebook and and I looked at what people were doing and I was like, well, I can't sing like John Legend or play the piano and I I can't teach a workout on my roof and hope that people will join in So what I can do is I could teach meditation. So I, find that I find. Certainty through service on certain times, and I feel that's the beautiful thing about purpose is that you can always find a new way to live your purpose. Even in difficult times, you may not be able to be happy or joyful or ecstatic, but you can always be purposeful and to me. That's what I found that even though my book is a big part of my purpose and I think it's going to be more useful now, and that's a part of it to just learning to trust and be open to trusting time, and that's the hardest part. Recognizing that I don't have to fix in control everything, but actually what's flowing may be what's better for me. If I can find a new thing right now and I think those, we ended up doing forty days of meditation and Twenty Million People Meditate with us over forty days, and it was just beautiful because one percent of those people which I was speaking to. Afterwards on the lives they were saying Jay, we've never meditated before, and so it was just like this new. New Rebirth of inexperience and I was so grateful that I was able to adjust and adapt and and find a new way to help well, our mother often tells the story about how do you know what's good and what's bad luck and that's sheer point is maybe in the end you serve more people more effectively by having this delay built in because you were available at a time and then your book will come out and then it will be available just the same. So, it's more needed now than. than. And, and of course, I'm. Being honest, of course, I would've loved to have been traveling the world right now and I book tour and. Embracing. Like being I. I was so excited about that. But. I think at the same time, it's it's reminding myself why I'm doing this and where it comes from. If my true desire is to help people, then I can do that anywhere anytime and I don't need to limit that to one project or one way J. I have a question I would love some advice for myself. I am trying to improve my listening skills. I'm always interrupting or thinking about what I'm going to say next and I really want to be a good listener and I thought a former monk. person to ask for some advice on how to be a better listener. Yeah, I. Think you'll get a better onto from consistent monk. I'll definitely like phrase inconsistent monk. I I'll do my best to share what I, what I learned in the monastery and what I've seen monks continued to do so beautifully. First of all I think it's wonderful that you have the intention to want to be a better listener and I think that that's really where it starts because. I think for most of us were not aware that we don't listen well and suggests that you have that awareness and you've set the intention that you want to be a better listener. That's a really, really beautiful place to start. The second thing is to become really good asking questions. What I find is bad listeners because we don't ask interesting questions. So if you ask the question of how are you doing today, it may not actually be the most interesting question. So you know what? You're going to get and so when we can predict an ONS, we listen less well. and. So I've tried to train myself and I want to give you some I. Actually, I've written them down, I was writing them down for a client the other day, and I'll share them with you now. As. Questions that can be ost. And, these are some of my favorite questions that you can ask to anyone your friend, your family member or. In a meeting and some of the obviously are more deeper than others. But I, like asking people. What's your intention today? What, what is your goal today I love asking people that because I don't know the answer, I'm hopefully going to be surprised I. Love asking people that what's in their life that they value, but they don't give as much attention to. Question I. Love Asking People I. This is one of my favorite ones what what about the problem is really the problem for you and I find that to be much more leading interesting. So there's so many ways of finding new questions that are interesting to you to ask in different contexts and I feel like if you better question, you're more excited to listen and so that's the second tip and the third way of being a better listener is your. Your conscious mind is always going to project your experience or start preparing your answer when you're listening and I find it really helpful to talk to my own mind about how I want to be in a moment. So what I asked myself to do, some time is just listen to every word and I'll just repeat that to myself as an affirmation, which is just reminding my own mind to listen to every word that I'm hearing I, often find this. Tool that's.

"She was tweeting back and forth with Charlie poof about it. And she said she was fanning out which again always on the right team this woman. There's lots of large wildcats in the video which led meet. You want to tweet that the video is Puna Njie but then I thought can walk. How do we feel about white people saying the Poona knee which I so associate with the movie poetic justice add black people talking about their sexuality I. Feel like I would have cringed in liked. happened. Glad back but I feel like I don't actually have. Opinions about that I would have wondered if this tweet came from two, thousand, one and. I have not heard naughty in a minute. It would remind me of another celebrity who should have blocked. Me Command on Johnny when I called Him Kumail Nangiani. We're in sync. Okay. Yeah. We're definitely in sync we're definitely in. Jokes believe it or not. That came from the lyrics of the song of course where she says. Johnny Gas, which is. I mean, let's let's talk about nutrients. There are actually some some lyrics that I think can we would be remiss not mention like I want you to touch that little dangling thing swing in the back of my throat love that Leering, which actually comes right before nine sunny. Another lyric. PUT THAT BIG MAC truck right in this low garage. That's it. That's. I. Love Magazines Line Your honor I'm a freak bitch. Costs, Leeches, shift the WIG make them think he cheat. Love Name Yeah, I caught it. Cheat. Cheat. And better. Every single song truly she is and I will say one of the pluses of this is just seeing both of these women at the top of their game. I was trying to find a recent pop cultural moment to sort of compare it to because it almost I almost wanted to say like telephone. Yeah. But they're not quite where beyond say and Gaga were at the time when they collapsed for. This is still like an early vibe for both of them because it's still both of their second album's you know I just remember Cardi Win Bodak yellow came out you know people wondering, why is she going to be a one hit wonder and she stays on the charts and the songs are fun and Meghan is finally coming into her own as well. You know and collaborating with the right people because. I love this new era of women in rat where like she featured some other rappers in the video to at the end you know and it's like Mega. With Air Body. Yes. She's got beyond say she's Got Nikki. She's got this Cardi saw is like it. It's long gone from that era were. Nikki unfortunately like felt like she has painted women in up, she literally disbarred women from entering. Became I. have to relent I. Guess that this woman is going to take my spot and then Cardi B. did that and then was inclusive to other women. So we're actually ushering in a new era of music entirely like the next five years not only do women dominate rap right now more and more women are about to dominate all of music. So it's a very exciting time. You're not that I would say that it was all Nikki's fall I mean she has been you know obviously sort of kept that Kitty cat on reclusive. Of Not playing with the girls on the playground. But like a lot of that obviously stems from women in hip hop being treated as there can only be one of you you know and like you're feeling like you're fighting. With one another and they black people are to do that in white spaces block where people are made to do that black women are made to g that you know. So it's it's not shocking of the highlander they're gonNa, you know oddly enough i. mean you guys are talking about? Ann. Coulter I think that nick human are suffered from the same thing and coulter. Did in her field, which is like Nikki was the only woman on young money records and she was encouraged to be like fuck Ramaema fuck. Lil Kim. So they created a culture for her where she was the only one had to remain the only one. So she wasn't inviting to other rappers your now men aren't dominating signing these women. These women are being independent getting signed. The big labels or doing it from the ground up. So again, things are changing. I want to also point out a reference that I remain earlier that I was just thinking about Tipper Gore at this whole thing really took me back to the eighties when Tipper Gore was the head of something called the Parents Music Research Center, and she picked fifteen filthy songs that were. Like the worst thing that could ever be on radio and it was the beginning of putting stickers on albums and things like that. But what was interesting to me was it was the moment before hip hop kind of took over popular culture and the idea of female sexuality that she resented now feels incredibly quaint. Madonna's dress you up is on that list was filthy fifteen. Yes. These, songs that were on it and it's not just without address you up it is. The Mary Jane Girls. In. My House Cindy Loppers Sheba. Wise eastern sugar walls I'm just saying, isn't it? Great? A. At the time what she was railing against really was she bought her daughter a purple rain album and of course, Darling Nikki's on that album. By the way, we talk about Darling Nikki for a second masturbating in the lobby with a magazine. So she's a prostitute but what she masturbating with a magazine in the lobby, I never understood that anyway I guess you could say she was a sex scenes. I was so well done. But it's like Tipper Gore basically went away after a couple years became second lady et Cetera but it's like she couldn't even handle hop coming to the fore. It was a big railing against heavy metal music to which at the time was a lot more. Vulgar than we think of it now, it seems like any artists with eyeliner was on the list is pretty much what I'm deducing, but you know there were also. Men on it. You know like Black Sabbath was on it. DEF. leppard twisted sister people do forget before like Nwea and shit. You know like where people were like who these black people are saying SAG NIGGA A lot. And like fucking the police, a lot of it was white men are being too sexy. You know and like talking about violence in their songs and. fucking women to a lot of this too when you see people sort of like Nacer saying and saying that like black women are degrading themselves, you see a lot there've been a few. It's about that white men have been doing this for decades and there was a time when their lyrics were also just sort of like regarded as too Raunchy or not allowed for children in public consumption but they were never degraded in the way. Obviously the black women are you know like they said that they were making white men look bad. By. Singing. Let me put my love into you. And then famously three people came to the defense of these artists and who. Testified on of how ridiculous this whole situation was, and they were John Denver denied from twisted sister who song we're not GonNa take it was on the list and Frank Zappa and my question is are there people we want now to like jump up and that we wouldn't think stick up for white ask Pussy but it would be nice to hear from them by John Legend do you have it in you? I don't I. Would just say like it is a joy to have these women on the scene doing it. You know it's a fucking hilarious song and a good song. Yeah it's hilarious. How finding? Video is truly icon it and I don't use that word lightly like it is a great fun video to put on like it's it's so fun Housi-. It's bright colorful in this. A motive are like Willy Wonka sort of like way it's just like. Entertaining and like most pleasing to me to watch out then as A. Black Queer kid who I feel like grew up in an a culture where you know you are hearing a lot of men talk about sexuality in sort of trying to come to terms with your own I was always drawn to you know like little cams and Trina foxy Brown's you know and now it is just. Great that you have people like Cardi and then just fully owning their sexuality and you can sing along to these songs and you know relate to them in a sense you know and..

Why wouldn't you want the man to to do something that would ensure that the experience last long enough for the moment they stare at you and they can't control their body, and they spray everywhere so flattering, isn't it? It's dangerous. It's a bit dangerous for a woman like that. No, no, no, no, no one is doing this on the street. You're on a date with your on a date with honest. She's singing to you. Don't Condone Sprain an alley walking down the street. Yeah, no right! Maybe come and go. Oh! Gosh I guess that's what they're full. Spray, grab a diet coke. But in this scenario you guys are definitely going to say. I have one night with Riyan I really WANNA. Do a good job I that and she fucking deserves that. Yes, talented a she is. She could have been with anybody that night she picked me to sing to. Deliver Yeah. So three times singing. Thrice time one time, tickle tickle and roll around. You wouldn't ever hop. You don't need to you. Don't need you and John Legend. You don't need to hop into the bathroom. tickle tickle because who cares if you spray. That's right. You won't be rendered useless after that moment now. I can go on and on. Lucky John. Really in the fantasy. I want to like walk in on him singing. I don't want it to be for me. Hold on, hold on. "Try it today. Okay, so that was good, and that was good for our souls in our spirituality, but now I'm Gonna I'm GonNa regress because I've interviewed a bunch of musicians at this point with the exception of Van Hunt. You're my another. You guys are fucking thriving ship pal. You Van Hunt, so I was so into you and Van Hunt at the exact same time, and I just want to tell you one or two little tidbits of how you've been involved in my life because you're interested in me and. I this movie, an Illinois I drove there from La. And I listened to your first album lifted the whole ride on repeat, and then every day worked at Joliet prison and I would pull into the prison in the little dock where they look under your car and everything and then I gotta talk to State Prison Guards right so. I gotta say eight mornings in a row. I showed up in this dude was he just wasn't super excited to see me, and he didn't want to deal with these fucking actors at the prison, but unlike day nine of this I'm just inside with the windows up while they're searching under the car and I'm listening into you too to get lifted in. The dude knocks on my window. I roll down, he goes. Would you know about John Legend? And I go. I know every word every verse, and he goes all right man all right, and then that dude, and I got along so well for for the next. Six weeks at this prison. Beautiful moment and I also I had a romance to that album, and then I was talking to my wife this morning. We're both just talking about how much we loved you because I. was you same romance? You're GONNA like this. You're gonNA like this, so I'm telling her like I'm really excited. I'm going to interview John Legend. She's like Oh, and we just kind of sat there from like Oh. We're remembering that those first two albums and I go. We both had love affairs right to that album, not with each other, and she's like Oh. Yeah I had one too, and I was like it's the best. That's interesting. It's the best once again for me. Me was the real love affair. Pda I must have listened to PDA on repeat making out three hours as well. See that album once again was the more romantic album. The first album had a little bit of everything because it had some cheating songs and had ordinary people. Stay with you. You know had had a range, but once again it was more like romantic I always imagined like sipping wine in the south of France to once again or A- something like that. And so that was the vibe for the second album, and it's always interesting when.

"Music now. John Legend has new album bigger love and I recently sat down with him virtually to talk about that album about current events. He's been a longtime advocate for criminal justice reform and an outspoken opponent of down trump among other things, so we had a lot to talk about. Let's get right to that interview. I'm not sure that I've ever had a musician scheduled. The interview for eight am before. You should see my schedule week and all last week. We've been working early. You know the bottom line is my kids. Wake up around seven seven thirty so I'm waking up usually that early anyway and so. My own musicians ours was there a time when you kept more standard musicians hours well when I was a bachelor and young, and you know I would stay in the studio. Sometimes they'll one or two in the morning and wake up a little later. Now I go in usually around noon and I'm done before dinner so in the morning I wake up and hang out with the kids. I work out I. do a few calls or whatever. To handle some business in the studio and then. I'm home by dinnertime and I'm done working, so let's using my schedule and on the road. It's obviously a whole different schedule. You've always struck me as a fantastically disciplined person What's the least disciplined thing about Ya? I I'm pretty disciplined. Let me think what is not disciplined about me. It's interesting because Chris is cleaner and Tidier at the house than I. Have I'm not a slob but relatively speaking. My wife is more more need. With getting everything physically and order at the house than I am it. Is, really great, really enjoying it. It's funny. You've made more politically charged albums in the past. That might be more directly suited to this moment, right? You can't really pick your times to that extent. Album sick longtime. Yeah they take a while to make, and even after you've finished writing it, there's still quite a distance between writing and putting it out, so you can't ever be sure exactly what environment you're going to be releasing it into, but here we are. We're at this moment. I made the music primarily in twenty nineteen, but also wrote a few key songs early twenty twenty, and we were wrapped on writing songs right before we went into quarantine. We didn't know we were about to go into quarantine, but we got done with what we thought was a really great album by You know late February as ours writing the songs. And Recording Demos and you know they were already pretty much closer to the finish line. The only things that needed to be done with you horn overdubbed. If you string over dubs, and some are featured guest hadn't put their vocals on yet. And then we ended mix master all that and that's what happened over the last few months. Trying to do it was in a distancing, and all these other things made it a little more complicated, but it was doable and we got it done. There's certain sums it could be read in a more political way. Eight never break is about a relationship, I can also hear it as another contraband. It was always meant to kind of feel like both talk about the water rising in the mountains, shaking and talk about it being bigger than you and me, and so the idea of the song was that it could, it could be about a couple you know saying they're going to stick together through times, but I think it's more about human resilience, and about the power of love to help us get through tough times anyway and. One of my team members has always said she felt like it was. It was an oath to our democracy that. We, could you know get through? Even these challenges that we're seeing hurled at our democracy, but I believe it is an anthem of resilience, one way or another, whether you choose to see it as just for you, and your loved one or in a broader context, if it is about our democracy, are you sure we'll never break? I'm not you know it's interesting because I I'm an optimist by nature, but I can see what's happening in and I think if trump gets reelected, we won't have democracy as we know it. After his second election because he's already pretty much off all the guardrails, just things that seems kinda small and kind of got buried in the news like him firing all these inspector general's at the different departments supposed to hold. People, accountable him, refusing to give his taxes him actively intimidating and discouraging people from voting. We're very close to being a democratic government in name, only if he can ignore accountability, ignore checks and balances and intimidate voters in the press then we're not a real democracy, so we're on the brink right now. You've been a longtime advocate for criminal justice. Reform issues are far from new to you. What surprised you if anything about this colonel? I don't know about surprised, but I think I'm hopeful seeing this moment because I see the conversation moving leaps, and from where it was before, and I think part of it is due to the sheer volume and the diversity of the coalition. In the streets marching, protesting for justice, asserting the black lives matter even seeing a Republican senator utter those words I think there's a broader coalition out there in the streets right now, and I feel a lot of momentum towards making real serious change, and I think the activists have escalated their demands I think for a while. It was reform or retrain, and now that were de-fund fund which has become a controversial word, but it's provocative, and it makes you have a bigger conversation about why do we spend so much money on policing jailing and imprisoning people win? Those funds could be used in other ways that would make our communities more. More healthy and more safe, so I think the move from mere kind of sensitivity, training and implicit bias training to Liz rethink fundamentally the way this whole society is structured way. Our local budgets structured I think is a positive move when comes to move the conversation toward justice in towards peace in our communities. When you see that only in the last month have opinions among white people shifted to understand that the criminal justice system that police treat people differently. I mean on the one hand. I guess it's good that the opinions you finally shift the on the other hand isn't hard to say like what took so long I do Kinda. That yeah, it's frustrating. Because black people have been saying for a long time, it is frustrating, but I will say videos make a big difference and we saw with Rodney King Video when I was a kid, but we've seen it more recently with this George Floyd Video, I just think the length of time that they were on his neck. The repeated cries. He couldn't breathe Chrysler. His mom cries from the crowd around him to that he couldn't read them that they were going to kill him. And the look of just indifference on the police officers face I think this video is different. You know it's different than a lot of the conflicting accountable here. Here when we don't have video or the Oh, I've heard from our life that that the officer Wilson said when he was in the struggle with Michael Brown, you know a Lotta Times will give police the benefit of the Dow. Though we found that. Whenever there's video, it often contradicts what the police report, but in our history white people I think have been given reason to believe that they should trust the police because the police do treat them pretty well. Most of the time it's hard for them to realize that we see the police in a completely different way, because we've been the subject of so much brutality and unfairness and injustice over the years. We have no reason to trust the police account. We haven't been given reason to trust. Police account is their rage and anger in you. It doesn't come out in your music in doesn't come out here and you are in your presentation to the world, but is it in their added I. don't carry much rage. I'm I think by nature optimistic by nature peaceful. By nature someone who wants to find common ground, and so my disposition is not rage and anger, but there's something there that makes me speak up for a progressive ideals makes me speak up for justice and speak out against injustice.

"People get choked for instance by these. chokehold was banned at the time it happened and the and the officer was charged and convicted. So you know a lot of times. These rule changes are naive, but. If the effect is still the same that a police can act with impunity, then it doesn't matter so i. do think there needs to be teeth behind these rules and regulations and real consequences and accountability around these rules and regulations that that that are supposed to control polices behavior, but also I do believe that we need to reconsider our funding. of the police and I think it's important part of the conversation. So how do you see Johnny? Never been shy about speaking out on issues of the role of while known people I think we've seen the taboo or the risk. Navy for celebrities began kind of go away. Remember used to be that Michael Jordan or other people just didn't want alienate people. Now you see the Ron James, starving voting rights organization people ourself. It seems like that door has been kicked down and you don't see a risk. Right row was already down. If you look at Mohammed, Ali and right wonder look at Bob Dylan. John Lennon all these artists. spoke out over the years. A spoke out about the Vietnam. War this book out about Civil Rights is out about women's rights over the years, and I think celebrities have always been part of the conversation, but I do believe This conversation should be driven by experts by organizers by activists and celebrities I. Think we have a role in amplifying the work that these folks are doing, but they're doing more hard work, and we should amplify voices and make sure they're heard and is not about us. I think that's probably probably smart approach to it and I before I. Let you go just on the on the album in the role of of music, right now just not even specifically to what's happening, but just the the beauty of sitting back on your deck or where we are putting John. Album John Legend albumin, just letting it go. That's I wrote about releasing music during this time and a lot of what I said was about just. That is the idea that music isn't. GonNa Save the world. We're not GONNA chew. The virus were not going to fix all the world's problems, but we can give people a bit escape. We can let them we can inspire them. We can give them some hope we can make them feel a connection to their loved ones And make that fuel even stronger, and so that's what music and do It's powerful is beautiful. I know I'm humble about. The amount of impact music and have, but I do believe it does have some kind of magic to it that transcends a lot of differences that we may have otherwise. It's been great escape for the last three months can't wait to have everybody here. You're out. My got to listen to the awesome congratulations. Yeah, I, think now now let you unnerve addams family at this point. Villain in your household I. Now. My kids can be free to talk again. John Great to talk to you..

"Sit Down podcast now more of my conversation with John Legend be talked about the pandemic and the impact. It's had on music on and everything else, but obviously in the last three weeks, or so since the killing of George, Floyd in Minneapolis added entirely different layer to even to listening to your music. Maybe do you see that that you didn't write these songs about what's happening necessarily right now? Obviously, but there may be something in those songs people here. They apply to what they're watching everyday. I think we've seen so many images of black people in mourning and. Outrage or even literally with knees on our next I feel like albums kind of an antidote to that that is about celebrating joy in celebrating love and celebrating resilience and Though this album wasn't written in response to what happened just now. I think we could all use a lift right now. And and some love right now some joy and I think this can provide that for people. You've obviously are no stranger to social justice. You've been talking about and fighting about it for as long as I've known you well before that obviously What do you think not as a musician? But as American American as an African, American man is happening in the streets right now. How do you explain it to people? When is that energy that we're witnessing well of course of this conversation around a? The difficult relationship black people had with the police has been going on for. The longest you know this nation was founded on slavery and then so many aspects of the way black people who've been treated in America. Are Kind of descendants of slavery so You know this has been an ongoing conversation. I think the difference now is one the advent of the Cell Phone Camera has made these incidents more visible to more people and I think the. Utter agony of watching a man die in a nine minute video. and to see the cows look of indifference on The officers face as they killed him. it was galvanizing and powerful for a lot of people, and what's inspiring about it is that you seen a real multiracial coalition coming together in the streets of America, and even not just in America, but in Europe and all around the world. People saying you know this has got to stop and I think the power of that singular video was able to galvanize people in a way that haven't seen in a while and It's making people ask some serious questions about the way our society structured where Criminal Justice System has interacted with black one other communities of color over the years, and I think those are needed questions that we need to be asking and we need to think big and boldly about kind of change that we want to see. Talked to so many of my friends had great conversations in the last few weeks about that video. The George Floyd video what they've said to me is you have to understand willies that I see myself under the officers knee?.

"Well we've been working on the album since early. Two Thousand Nineteen in some songs, actually much older than that, but we've been working in earnest on the album since. Early Twenty nineteen and so We finished writing. All the songs embodied on the album before the end to make a took off in in America, and before we were on quarantine and so Don't listen to the songs thinking. They were written during this time but I think some of the songs actually feel right. In this moment, some of them are about resilience, and about love, getting through tough times, and then some of them are just fun joyful uplifting songs that I think it'd be great songs this summer, and and as before trying to emerge. From what's been really tough spring I? Think that we pretty uplifting. So. What is your process, John? You talk about eighteen months to make an album when you sit down, this is your seventh studio album. Say Okay. It's time to put something out again as somebody on the outside looking in I. Don't even imagine where you start. Like. What have you begin the idea of novel? Some some artists that come into it thinking. They have a kind of a thesis of what they're trying to accomplish with album and they have a plan, and maybe they even have a concept that they develop for the album that everything will be You know inspired by, but for me I usually don't have that I usually unless it's kind of a specialty. Specialty album like Christmas album or or the album. I did with the roots Wake up, which was about protest songs and celebrating that tradition protest on when I just a regular John Legend album i. don't usually have an idea ahead of time of exactly what is going to come out like I just start writing and see what happens. See where my muse sins MEC- were. My inspiration sends me, and then it starts to take shape, and every album starts Abba personality after a while and you start to feel that when you you start to recognize which songs are connecting more for you and other people that listen to it with songs feel like they. Are the heart of the album in the heart of the creativity of album, and then you're able to figure out. This is what I should call this album. This is what a themes this The songs are kind of coalescing around and for me. That's.

Bringing you our favorites from the Sunday? Sit Down Library our conversations. We think but this week we got a new one. I got together over Zoom for Sunday today interview with John Legend the Great John Legend the Multi Grammy, winning John Legend the E got. John Legend if you're not familiar. That means he's won an emmy. A Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony one is a producer of a Broadway show. He's one at all. He's the first African American man to win the got and one of a small elite group in the history of entertainment to achieve that feat. He's got a new album out. It's called bigger love. He's been working on it and recording it for about eighteen months, but had to finish it during this pandemic, which presented all kinds of challenges as you're about to hear. Also when he's writing these songs, he didn't know a pandemic was coming. He didn't know we were going to see these movements in the streets that we've seen for the last several weeks for racial justice in this country something. He's been outspoken about something. He's been advocating for for many many years well before the death of George Floyd's that he believes despite the fact, he didn't write the songs for these moments the kind of love. Love the kind of pain. He shows in these are reflective of it, and maybe can help us get through this time. He's just a great guy more than anything else John. Legend is as you know. He's married to Chrissy Teagan. They have two kids really cute kids for your Luna to your old miles and I should tell you we were on zoom. I was at home in new. York John was at home in Los Angeles. And in order for us to start the interview in his living room, I became the villain because he had to tell Luna in miles, they had to turn off the movie because it was too loud, they were watching Addams, family, values and He had to shout at the kids, and I think I saw luna walk past our screen with their arms, folded, just staring down dad, and he said I'm sorry to interrupt your day sweetheart, and then squarely blamed it on some guy named Willie. Willie in New York City, so the legend Teagan kids don't like me not big fans of me at this point, but a great conversation with John Legend Right now the Sunday sit down podcast around his new album bigger love, and so much more enjoy it John, good to see man. Thanks doing this. It's my pleasure a great to see Willie. Spencer were it's been too long been locked up in our homes for so long clue..

How Are You Doing?
"Wow a lot. Short can change in a matter of days The next few weeks and likely months or probably look very different for many of us. The uncertainty may at times feel overwhelming. I was talking to my therapist this week. About how this all feels like a movie that isn't coming to a resolution anytime soon and it's hard to even make guess about what the ending will be like if you're feeling similarly. I want you to know that you're not alone in this. I know I share a few tips for managing anxiety. You were feeling about the corona virus session one forty five but I wanted to share a few more thoughts this week to perhaps give you some context for how you might be feeling anti share some tips. That might help you out now. More than ever you want to be paying attention to how much news you're consuming. We're starting to see. The first accounts of people sharing their experiences with corona virus. And we're also starting to hear more about the deaths. It may feel like you need to stay connected to all of this information as a way of protecting or preparing yourself but I want you to think long and hard about whether this is actually helpful for you or if it's really making your anxiety worse it might be a good idea. If within your circles you all take turns being the one to send out a news blast at the end of the day of information that is absolutely critical for you to know and otherwise you completely disengaged from any information related to the corona virus related to this. I want you to get creative. Been thinking about how you're gonNA stay connected to your support system even though we should all be practicing social distance as much as possible right. Now that doesn't mean you have to be isolated now is a good time to think about scheduling periodic check. Ins with your people. I've heard of groups getting together. Virtually to play Trivia to have happy hours. And there's even chrome extension called Net flicks party that allows you and anyone who joins your party so watch a show at the same time and chat and don't forget about our own community the yellow couch collective if you enjoy spending time in the comments section on our social media channels or if you love. The content shared here on the PODCASTS. Why you see would be an excellent place for you to come and connect with them other sisters right now. A large part of May be contributing to the anxiety you're experiencing is likely related to there being so many unknowns about this situation we don't know who will contract the virus. We don't know everything about how it's treated etc so help manage some of this anxiety. I want you to take control of the things that you can control i. I want you to make sure that you're clear about the symptoms and how the corona virus looks different from the seasonal flu and allergies. If you're like me and struggle with allergies at this time every year the little tickle in your throat might be making you very anxious right now but I want you to think about how your allergies typically present and if what you're feeling is typically what you'd feel by all accounts. Fever is a hallmark symptom of the corona virus. So I want you to make sure you have a thermometer that you can use for yourself or your family. My understanding is that test across the country are still being incredibly small supply and even if acivities have them they're only administering them under certain circumstances. So once you to stock up on supplies that you might need to take care of yourself if you were to have symptoms. Things like pain. Relievers plenty of fluids and perhaps you WANNA try calling your primary care physician to discuss a plan for which it happened if you experience some symptoms but might not meet the criteria for hospitalization. Arming yourself with the knowledge and supplies to have a plan in place might help you to feel less anxious. It's also important for you not to forget about taking care of your mental health.
