"For the hour Stewart and Venice Florida, you are on the earth representative Khanna. Thank you. Thank you both for the great work and congressman. I do hope you do run for the Senate. With democracy on the fence, I hope this doesn't sound too trivial. But with all this talk about social security, I'm going to retire at CPA and I remembered in 83 social security was made partially taxable by the Reagan administration. And at the time, there was only for higher incomes, but it was never indexed for inflation. Then in the 90s, the Clinton administration actually made the taxation even higher and never changed the indexing. And now what I'm seeing is lower and middle income people are paying checks on social security. Relative focus on benefits. I'm wondering, is there any discussion at all about bringing an indexing this tax thing, which has not been indexed since 1983 when it was an active and it's now affecting low and middle income taxpayers quite extremely? And if I could jump in here, congressman, I got an email about four or 5 months ago from freedom works. Suggesting that the Republicans should champion the issue of ending income taxes on social security benefits. Which I thought was interesting. I'm curious to hear your thoughts on all this. Well, I'm going to build it. And income taxes on working class middle class folks on social security benefits and a start to that would be passing John Lawrence and social security act, which is introduced that has over 200 co sponsors. One of my big frustrations the last Congress is we did get it for a vote. They were both increased social security benefits. It would exempt some of the working class vlogs from social security taxes. It would fix the windfall exemption provision which does it allow teachers and firefighters to get all their social security benefits if they had a previous job. There were a few front liners who blocked the vote on this bill. I believe we have to pass this after a vote on its probably one of the biggest things that the president can run on in 2024. "Right in that. That's the other thing that breaks my heart. To hear you articulate this powerful believe that these formerly enslaved people had they bought our bullshit speaking as a white person right like they believe what we were telling them. Because i on some level it's true right and then it had to have it as you said like right after the war a court finds your slave until you prove you're not and then after the first world war those those veterans are lynched and horford and subjugated and then after the second world yes yes and then after after vietnam. It's just this and we can argue about whether or not the vietnam was necessarily fought to uphold american values but This idea that we will. We will let the real your book right the second amendment we will. We will take up arms. We the people who were brought to this land in chattel slavery We will take up the guns that you have given us. We will fight for you. We will not turn them on you right. He's not right now. Because you've told us we need to do this. And they keep coming they. It keeps coming back to that. It keeps coming back to that. Write an and the the we will take arms and so part of what we also see in. This is the exigencies so that when whites need black folks to bear arms then there is a a loosening in that that in that boundary so that during the revolutionary war and you couldn't get enough white men to enlist in the continental army and the are like common. I mean british are coming and and there's a sense when you think about this. The americans were traders to the british crown. A we know what happens to traders So this is the ol- maga w- we can't get enough white man. What are we going to do in. Its when you think about it as well In south carolina when the british when the war stiffened up north and the british said. We're going to hit the soft underbelly. We're gonna go south. And so they said basically a talk on near armada of eight thousand troops To the south they hit georgia. Georgia georgia collapsed. Like that was like. I don't even know what happened. And and then the british will like we just looked your. But that's what happened. And now they're going to head toward south the common to charleston And and george washington since his his emissary john lawrence a prominent son of south carolina to beg the south carolina government to arm via slade. "Because we are still dealing with the legacy of slavery. But what i'm trying to do is convey how people in the eighteenth century were really struggling with this changing idea. Racism at that time was not necessarily considered a bad thing and slavery as an institution was going from being an uncontroversial norm to being something that was at least highly questioned by more and more people. The question that the founder seem unable to resolve was how to move away from slavery without having it dividing the cause and creating chaos. I've listed a bunch of books in this week's blog episode that discussed the contributions of african american revolution. Those cover some really interesting stories. And i suggest you read them if you have the time but what. I'm really focusing on in my point. Here is how the elite white people in power were trying to change a system that in a seemed to go against their own self interest for the sake of being true to their new ideology for that reason. My recommendation for a book. This week is john lawrence and the american revolution by gregory massey as someone from south carolina the heart of support for slavery lawrence represented a new way of thinking and try to push his home state forward. On this issue. The sadly lawrence will be killed later in the war. It would have been interesting to see if he could have grown into a southern leader. That really made a movement on this issue. A some of argued that lawrence was pulled in the direction by his wartime friends. Hamilton lafayette both of those men became much more outspoken on abolition after the war but although hamilton never own slaves personally he did handle slaves as part of the schuyler family property. Lafayette also attempted to purchase some slaves shortly after his arrival in america. So all of these young men were coming from an environment where slavery was perfectly acceptable and were developing the idea over time that it was not how lawrence might have evolved as a highly respected member of the south carolina. Lead would have been interesting to see in any event. His bogra fy makes for some interesting readings so checkout lawrence and the american revolution. My online recommendation is a journal article by the same author gregory massey who is a university professor who has written extensively on this theme..

"South carolina owners not driving them as hard or punishing them as brutally and he had a reluctance to break up slave families whenever possible. Some may argue that noting. This lincoln treatment is somehow an attempt to excuse or mitigate the judgment against lawrence for having owned slaves. I'm not pointing this out for any such reason. And in fact it to to judge the man. I'm simply trying to point out that. Despite being an owner of a large number of slaves lawrence did feel conflicted about the institution and did have some feelings for those who labored for him. He did not view africans as animals. Or as somehow subhumans who needed enslavement to fit into a civilized society at the same time though he continued to hold people in bondage and force their continued labor for his own benefit. If the father henry lawrence felt conflicted between his life as a slave owner and his ideals about freedom and equality his son. John seem less conflicted having reached adulthood in europe where slavery was not a part of society. John see much more ready to find a way to end the institution despite views henry. Laurens remained a large slave owner as early as seventeen. seventy six. He wrote tucson about the idea of mandating his slaves. The father and son discuss ways to transition from a slave based economy to one based on the ideals expressed in the declaration of independence. They were not ready for some radical scheme end slavery instantly nor were they willing to grant immediate mansion even to their own slaves but the men worth thinking about how to transition society in that direction. I early seventeen seventy nine. John lawrence saw an opportunity both to aid the patriot cause and also to further the goal of finding a way to end slavery lawrence had long proposed the idea of raising a regiment or even several regiments of slaves who would be offered freedom in exchange for military service in even written to his father in early..

"Actor. He's about to receive an award in Italy. He's all about getting laid and having fun. But, you know, that little girl in your life, they start bonding and now Johnny's got to reexamine his life of excesses and his relationship with her. Any father who has a daughter who once lived a fast life will cry watching this film. It makes your heart hurt in a good way. Good for Steven dor for making that move with Sofia Coppola. So he came out swinging the other day when he was asked about the upcoming Black Widow marvel movie, starring Scarlett Johansson as if we need another one of these fucking movies. And Stephen dorff didn't back off like every other actor does. He bashed it. He said, I still hunt the good shit. 'cause I don't want to be in Black Widow. It looks like garbage to me. It looks like a bad video game. I'm embarrassed for those people. I'm embarrassed for scarlet. Good for him. Then for good measure, he said, I'm sure she got paid 5 or 7 million bucks, but I'm embarrassed for her. I don't want to be in those movies. I really don't. I'll find that young director that's going to be the next Stanley Kubrick. And I'll act for them instead. Anyone even further. He characterized showbiz, the film industry at launch is a big game show. But he's really, his main gripe is that people selling out to the big studios and he believes in maintaining some sense of autistic integrity and I totally agree. He also pissed all over the academy once. He said, this year's Oscars were the most embarrassing thing I've ever seen. How much do you love Steven doff right now? My business is becoming a big game show. You have access that don't have a clue what they're doing. You have a film that filmmakers that don't have a clue what they're doing. We're on these little boxes, all these streamers, TV, film. It's all one big cluster fuck of content now. I had a boy, Stevie. I'm sorry I smacked you with the restaurant 15, 17 years ago. Bad night that was a bad night for me. I saw the Black Widow trailer when I took my son to see the Fast & Furious 9, don't see that, but I think it was nothing much playing. We had a good time. It was a good father son bonding night. The trail looks fucking gone awful. And they're calling this movie the first marvel film to focus on Johansson's title character because she's appeared in 7 installments of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. 7, if she hasn't made enough money now from all these stupid fucking movies, what is she doing? Time to move on, Scarlett, making goddamn interesting movie. 'cause she can be very good. She can be a very good dramatic actress. Meanwhile, Stephen dorff said, I got no regrets over my career choices. He made that John what his movie in 2000 calls Cecil B demented. A lot of people gave him shit for that. They called a shitty movie. His agents recommended he did some big movies, and I'm not doing it. I want to work with John Lawrence. Why wouldn't I do a John Waters movie, he said? The other movie sucks. And his agent's like, well, it's going to do this movie is not going to do anything for your career or money wise. He goes, yeah, but I'm going to go to Cannes and we're going to get a standing ovation and kids around the world art students and John Waters fans are going to worship this fucking movie, which they do to this day. Why wouldn't I do that? The next day, he fired those agents. And he's right. It's just so refreshing to hear an actor actually talk honestly. Good for him because you look at, I'm always on Netflix or Amazon Prime, hoping something popped up that I missed. I've seen a couple of them the last few days. I saw nobody with Bob Odenkirk, although a little far fetched, but still kind of fun. Ice row with Liam Neeson, a couple of others, things seen and heard, I like that a man to save free. She's cute. She's sexy, good actress. Anyhow, you look at Netflix's top ten list, any given week. I hope that not lying. But if they're not lying, those top ten Americans top ten movies, what a fucking sad testament to the lack of taste, the Netflix subscribers and people in general have given their huge inroads into the population at large. America's taste in movies. Overall, I gotta tell you, sucks. So good for Stephen dorff. We're standing up for himself and talking down to an industry that clearly is in trouble. By the way, a number of you saw a picture I posted on Instagram yesterday, July 5th. Two days ago now. It was an LAX the airport, and it was on as if it's another business. LAX, we all know the airport. Right before me and tootsie are gonna fly from Los Angeles to Chicago. And she's in a little travel case. I just give it, oh, by the way, by the way. I have a bottle of tincture oil, which is CBD and THC. THC being the component in the marijuana plant that makes you hot. CBD has only healing properties. But I have CBD and THC and a one to one ratio. Because I like to sleep at night and not get up every fucking three hours in P I like that drug for that to sleep. And it does make me sleep. The other bottle I have is the CBD for dogs. It's strictly CBD. No we, no THC. When my confusion at the airport, I grabbed my bottle and I gave tootsie a hole drop a full of the CBD THC that I take as a 225 pound man and it puts me on my ass. And there's nothing I could do. I couldn't make a throw up, we're at the fucking runway, where we were going on the plane. I'm like, oh my Christ, I stopped Googling THC in dogs. It's toxic. You must give them a lot of water. Comfort them. It was like the very frightening to know for the next four or 5 hours. This dog was gonna start to feel the effects. And normally I also give her a benadryl. I didn't give it benadryl. And she was like a log in that bed. And I'm having PTSD flashbacks of when cesare died on the plane. 17 years ago, with no drugs at all. He just had an enlarged heart. We didn't know any drop dead in mid flight from New York to LA. Worst day ever. Now, tootsie's laying like a log in that basket and I'm like, I can't believe I'm living this over again. I got another dead dog here. I keep picking her up, pumping her, looking to see if she's breathing right. She pulled through. Let me tell you something. I walked through the airport on the way back into Chicago like I was holding a doll. One of those, one of those raggedy Ann dolls. She was a flop. She slept all night, finally just wanted she picked her head up and we went outside and she did her business and she's fine now, but she's just be careful. Anyhow, some of you saw this picture of her before she got drunk or just once she got drunk and she had this disgusted look on her face. And there was a dasani water bottle next to it. And somebody wrote they don't buy Coke products because Coca-Cola owns dasani. The shittiest water around, really. I could have gotten heavy on, but they only had big bottles or Fuji, but they only sold big bottles of the effort, and they'll just 6 95. The dasani is three 95, but as you know, guys, whenever you see me in the airport, we're gonna meet in the sandwich. Not Burger King and McDonald's but if I'm eating a sandwich from one of those fancy stores while holding a water, whatever it is, rest as short. I didn't pay for it. Once I hit the airport, everything is free. That's been my rule. If you're gonna charge me three times the price for a bottle of fucking water, if a bag of beef jerky is $13 instead of 6, I'm taking it. You know, getting money out of me. When I go to have a breakfast burrito on the way to Las Vegas in a few months back and it's $18 for a breakfast burrito, I can't steal them. I gotta take the hit. So if I take the hit that morning, next time I fly, you're taking the fucking, not me. That's the way we keep things even. So if you see a Coca-Cola product next to me and my daughter, the airport, just know. I don't pay for shit. It's all on the arm. All right, got your show. For July 7th, 2021. Fame is a bitch. "Play. You know that that lemon walmart and a word play. You're talking about not being able to remember the songs the individual songs. I myself just really bowled over by benny's dispatch which is just a character singing directions and kind of reminding us. It's it's an introduction song. It's this is who i am. This is what i do. And this is what. I want all packaged into one number. But it is just so lyrically dense and kind of like joyously playful in a way that i find just really funny and really appealing and the parts of this musical event. I dug most all had that kind of sense of of play about the mets sense of. I'm introducing you to like culture in a way of life in a specific setting specific neighborhood and a specific set of characters. And that's a tall order so we're just gonna take our time with it and if it takes up the whole first act. That's fine and that was so much more interesting to me than than the attempts of plot resolution. But i think this movie is probably pretty flawed. And i don't care. I had such a good time with at a theater. It's such a good time with it like on a big screen. I mean i love anthony ramos in this film For for those unaware he was in hamilton. He was a dual role of john lawrence and philip and he was also i think eventually minimum rant is under study and of course limited while rand originated the role of the in the play. So there's certainly sort of implied passing of the baton not even implied like they kind of i think actually your that opening scene where it is is going to the data and passes lin manuel miranda as the paraguan dealer dealer seller. A guy they he they give each other like hi fi like almost a literal passing of the baton testing the paraguay. But all of this is to say like i think even though he is saddled with some not always stellar material found it just impossible to take my eyes off of anthony ramos in the film. He's just generally really good. he's really gonna stars born. He's good in also recently saw on his fees good at the. He's a nuanced role in that and to kind of kind of a bad guy with a lingering conscience. What's interesting to me. A one of the things to be about lin. Manuel miranda is of course. His sort of corny optimism of defy which is which is present in president hamilton..

Buttigieg Says Biden and GOP Remain Far Apart on Infrastructure

"And GOP hoped to strike a deal on infrastructure. On Friday, President Biden rejected the Republican counter offer John Lawrence reports, the two sides are still far apart. Biden. White House's infrastructure plan is still under construction. There a lot of conversations going on among a lot of members of the Senate and over on the House side on Wednesday, there's going to be a markup for a key part, a key element Of infrastructure policy, so lots going on right now, but still lots of daylight honestly between us and our Republican friends. Despite that daylight, the transportation secretary is defending the administration's decision to continue talking with Republicans over going it alone. Democrats and Republicans are still billions of dollars away from securing a deal. As the 2022 midterm elections grow closer, Republicans are going to be talking about defining themselves based on our differences on things like what is infrastructure. Biden has a paper thin majority in the Senate, so he needs the backing of key Democratic moderates like Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia to get the package through without Republican support for Manchin says he wants to bridge the gap with the GOP. We need a bipartisan infrastructure bill. We most definitely need that and infrastructure. Something's been delayed for far too long by past administrations, so it's time for us to move forward. But for both sides, the clock is ticking. And there's not a lot of policy there. This is just numbers. It's helping the country and and we ought to be able to find a resolution on that if we can't that spells trouble.

"I saw in off broadway with leann whalemeat on the long before anyone realized that it would be such a hit and so famous and it was fun. I it was limited. I mean broadway has this limited serve. Hollywood i don't share. I mean i think you're more into he asked about it than i am. Why are the draft. Well here's the gang angle anthony. Who is kind of people kind of casually them he plays the straight washed john lawrence and hamilton the musical who in real life john lawrence had a very deep romantic relationship with alexander hamilton. They're just friends in this musical but he also plays lady gaga. Best friend in a star is born the the movie where she drives her husband. Kill himself. and you know and as you know in terms of jaw anthony ramos role. He plays that character in star is born is very gay. So he's kind of like You know very excited. He's does not have a sexual relationship with a drag. Seen as the at all. he's he's. i'm not sure. I i was able to find footage of it. But i'm looking at footage of him and he's definitely playing that up as gay now. Anthony ramos in real. Life does not identify as gay is not taught expressed interest in other men. But he's definitely a honk a hollywood. Honk and he's going to be you. Know lighting up the screen and in the heights in june but more interesting to in terms of queer representation queer stories creatives and queer characters as west side. Story is revamped this time with actual puerto rican flavored ricans. It's a brand new book by tony. Kushner angels in america and of course leonard bernstein. Who was gay in real. Life wrote the musical and introduce latin. Latino are into the mainstream when film came out in one thousand nine hundred. eighty one. So america's going to fall in love with latin x puerto ricans dominicans or hollywood's gonna be vow to money and i'm very excited especially for west side story There also are characters in the west side story. Musical that are gender non conforming rita moreno. Who's of course a camp icon and surly made her. She says her career was built and revitalized by terrence. Mcnally by casting her in in the ritz romance for is sorry. I love google geico. So so you know. She's making cameo She's playing officer crummy just kidding. But she is on making an appearance in the in the movie and you know everybody's holding their breath for in the heights and west side story. It is the two major motion picture film events this year. Well i'll happy for you that you're so excited about them to your cycle or drive about both of those. I mean i just don't find hollywood that interesting In hollywood is about profit. Motives is really about sanitizing fans. It's really about integration. I i don't really see hollywood as the space of radical transformation. So when you are high that to rupaul's drag rations well oh of course And you know it's a fine line. Because i have to acknowledge that there are moments. There are moments for example if we think season thirteen. There's there's very limited moments in rupaul's drag race that are are truly progressive in the creates spaces of possibility sore. Trans people For the discussion of black lives matter. They are they and sure if you're isolated if you live in a place where maybe those conversations are not easily accessible if you live in a home where you're negotiating. "All those things for she turns around with like. It's my new signature move. They say that a but it is interesting. How you know right now. Emotions are running high. There's a lot of sense of loss not just by the fans but by the creators of the show. The series is wrapping up. And they feel like there's much more to be told hauled yes we'll hopefully. There will be other series so so popular. Culture mass culture programs like pose do have a very important role so season. Two of poe's was celebrated for depicting violence against transgender people. It was really a landmark in american television in television history. So having people like india more and mj throughout the israeli groundbreaking There's there's other artists of like be john donnell in puerto rico who have been using youtube videos on an interviews as the real space to open. Because i think it's important to realize that even even if we acknowledge these challenges hollywood is still space of privilege and it is still a very limited space so i like to see the conversation with tween broader activism and hollywood. You can say that. There is a opportunity in space for activism within the hollywood film and television industry. I think it's amazing. That pose has three series three seasons that it has really brought the spirit of the documentary. Paris is burning that crucial documentary from nineteen ninety and really transformed it and made it something very different very relevant so it will be really interesting to see how the third season of posed develops also hollywood is banking on. I mean pretty much putting all their money in two major musical films coming out this year. Lin-manuel miranda's masterpiece. That made him a household name. That made the musical. Hamilton possible is coming out to theaters in june twenty. Twenty one june eleventh. And this time it's going to star. Anthony rummells playing the role of snobby. That was originated by linneman. Wellman onda only is going to be taking over. The role originated by la sale ramadan as the pizza pizza. Pita new block of ice peadar. Agua snow cones snow counts. What is what is pita aguas. Have you seen in the heights. By the way. Larry i saw in the off broadway with leann whalemeat on the long before anyone realized that it would be such a hit and so famous and it was fun. President Joe Biden used the traditional interview before the Super Bowl to support the reopening of schools this week. The CDC is such released new guidance on schools opening up, the agency's director, Dr Rochelle Wolinsky, says for schools to open safely community spread of the virus needs to be down. Wolinsky has said that vaccinating teachers is not a prerequisite to reopening schools. House Democrats are expected to unveil new legislation today that would provide covert 19 relief John Lawrence reports. That proposal faces some backlash from Republicans. The Biden administration says it's covert 19 relief package will help get people back to work. I would expect it. If this package is past that we would get back to full employment next year for $1.9 trillion bill also includes eight for small businesses struggling to stay afloat and families experiencing food in security. We're operating in a time of historically low interest rates. This is a moment where the greatest risk we could take, As the president has said, is not the risk of doing too much. It's the risk of doing too little. Despite President Joe Biden's hopes for bipartisanship, some Republicans are pushing back on the price tag of the bill as all kinds of pork for local municipalities and states. It's all the special interest things that they've actually fought back on and claim they're being left out of the process. "Hello and thank you. For joining the american revolution today. Episode one eighty four machines and barren hill for the last couple of weeks. I talked about the british occupation of philadelphia and the experience of the local militia immediately outside of philadelphia during the winter of seventeen. seventy seven. seventy eight take away from that. Is that the british were secure in the city and that the militia were not terribly helpful and nearly got wiped out at the british attack. Crooked billet the only thing that prevented the complete destruction of the militia was the men's ability to run and hide over that winter. The continental army was focused on. Its own survival out. At valley forge and not interacting with the british very much at all americans real enemy that winter was the chronic shortages of just about everything despite the shortages the army was drilling under baron von story been and hoping to emerge in the spring as a credible fighting force with the pennsylvania. Militia dispersed following crooked billet and with the coming of warmer weather. General washington grew concerned that the british might attempt at offensive on valley forge itself to make sure this did not happen. He deployed a division to move closer to philadelphia to keep an eye on the british and he handed command of this division of continentals to major. General lafayette i recall that the marquis de lafayette had been a continental officer for less than a year. The nineteen year old french army captain with zero combat experience had received a commission as a major general based primarily on his willingness to work without pay. And the hope that his family connections with the french quarter might help to secure the much-needed alliance after he had first joined. Lafayette served as an aide to general washington. Certainly an honorable position but not one normally performed by a major general after all he was serving alongside two colonels alexander hamilton and john lawrence washington genuinely liked the young man but was not sure he was quite ready to command an entire army at brandy wine. Lafayette showed bravery under fire and received a battlefield injury this help to enhance his reputation with both washington and the continental congress the injury however meant that lafayette spent the next couple of months convalescing up in bethlehem pennsylvania when he returned to duty in november washington assigned him a small independent command. Lafayette lenny minor raid on british camp and gloucester new jersey near philadelphia. Something i discussed earlier episode and that was enough to win command of a division after congress dismissed major. General adam stephen for his conduct at germantown washington gave lafayette command of that division after that congress assigned lafayette to lead a new offensive to retake quebec..
