"Then, most recently, he's had some harsh words for Kim Foxx is office and handling of some police involved shootings. And has also been calling for the Fraternal Order of Police President John Canton, Zara to resign. We're talking about former Congressman Luis Gutierrez. He is our guest and congressman thanks for joining us here in Chicago's afternoon news. Thanks for having me on this afternoon. Well, where should we start? Let's start with the most recently Here. You've really had some harsh words for Kim Foxx is office concerning the Adam to Lehto case. He's the 13 year old that was shot and killed by police after a foot chase and little village. It appears from the body camera video that Toledo had tossed the gun less than a second before the shot was fired. S O. What did Kim Foxx his office do wrong here? First They should have never demonized this kid and basically silenced the community after the shooting of Adam, and while I was silenced, I kept hearing time and time again that this was a armed confrontation. Now. You just said that Adam got rid of the gun, so it couldn't have been an armed confrontation because nobody has ever said he pointed a gun. He got rid of the gun. He was running away because a coward gangbanger gave a 13 year old which date to all of the time. Manipulate, exploit young people in our community. Both boys and girls, both women and men, A zey go about their criminal enterprise. So they gave this 13 year old boy. Let's remember what itwas a boy a 13 year old boy and the police officer shot him so When her top lieutenant kept repeating that I said, Wow. You know, Adam must have had a gun. He must have pointed at the police officer because the BGN reported those words as the rest of the city of Chicago news media and then one Once they turning, Fox said that she didn't see the video. I was a little taken aback as I said to myself. Wow, I remember standing alongside of Kim Foxx on resigning from the Anita Alvarez campaign after it was revealed to all of us clearly that for a year she had The video of the murder of Laquan McDonald. She hit it for a year and a sort of it was released because a reporter, someone from the news media finally demanded from the courts. The release she invited the police officer within a day. I remember being at that press conference. Yeah, There was a lot of questions about that. That's for sure. And just to refresh people's memory here, too, on the Toledo case, you'll remember the mayor had also said, you know, before the video was released, we're going to find out who put this put the gun in to Adam's hand on then you also had the prosecutor. One of Kim Foxx is ah, prosecutors. Come out and say that he had a gun in his hand when he was shot it almost. It's almost was putting out there the story whether it was a mistake, or what have you Um, to kind of get in front of any protest. Do you think that was the case? Well, I'll tell you what. I'm a pretty seasoned veteran. I'm sure you'll agree and I would agree I was I was silenced. I said, Don't say anything. Louise. Um, wait further Hood wait for the video to be released on saying things up for two weeks. I was silence. Look, that was what happened. I reached out. As I said, um, less. One day I would reach out to the state attorney, Kim Foxx, and to her credit, She was very kind and generous and Reached out to me on Monday. I am going to see her next week. I said state's attorney Madam State's attorney, You pick the time you pick the place. I'm looking forward to opening up a new line of dialogue between you and me and hopefully between a community. Um, which wants to rest a short That you're going to be a champion for our civil rights for our rights against police misconduct and for criminal justice system that is truly fair and equitable. Former Congressman Luis Gutierrez is my guest. You know, of course. Now we have another police involved, shooting that fatal police involved shooting in with Anthony Alvarez. A lot of information still coming out. On that as well. The body camera just came out this week. How do you think the handling of that case has gone? Well, I will say that I am. Um How would I say this? I want to use the right Thank you. Cheers. Me, Right Adverbs. I am. Um I'm happy, right? I am, um, that the mayor of the city of Chicago took immediate steps to talk to the family to issue a joint release with the family, which I joined. I want to join Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Alvarez family and calling for peaceful demonstrations. Um, I think the community has responded accordingly in a very peaceful manner, um, to let their voices be heard. So I'm happy with the quickness and with which the mayor, um, sat down with the family and got this really so that they can see what has occurred here. So on the one and that's a very positive step in the right direction. But you know, I was heartbroken. You see another young Latino killed by a police officer. Police is supposed to protect our community not kill. Let's remember all from what we know about. Enter the Alvarez. He was a loving father who went to work every day. Um, we don't know much more. Um, but in the wake of this tragedy, just think about it. It's so hard to Phantom. That, uh, the Fraternal order of police President, uh, captains are, uh, described it as a quote 100% good shooting. This is this restless kind of How would I say this is reckless statements in a surgeon's call. It was fuel unrest in an already restless community and one week Chicago residents have been traumatized twice by what I believe most of us is looking at this objectively would say we're gonna were avoidable. That's of Chicago. Citizens on go. All I'm saying is when you have fo peachy says 100%. Good shooting. Listen, Mr Evo Peachy President. We pay the salaries of the Chicago police officers. You can't be running around town, saying 100% good shooting, and because what you're saying is the next time even if somebody has their back to you Chicago police officer. It's okay for you to shoot them, which clearly is demonstrated. In the video that I saw, and then I believe everybody else in the city of Chicago socks. Look, I think that is part of the problem that we have people like the effort, Peace president making these kinds of statements and then course which he can do this his first Amendment, right, go and say we're gonna put all our money and all our power behind. President Trump Ah, president that said this About both Adam and Alvarez, right. Mexicans are murderers, rapists and drug dealers, and we need to build a wall and get rid of them. That's what the president of the United States is. That's who this paternal order of police president endorsed. Put money behind and you know, I'm really tired of hearing the leadership of the police union. Make these kinds of statements. Here's what I'd like to see to things. Let's take a map of the city of Chicago and let's see what wards these be The thousands and thousands of Chicago police officers live in number one, and then let's have a list over the last 20 years. I'm not gonna go back to 25 30 years, the last 20 years. How much Runkle that Um, uh, at the hands of Chicago Police officers have cost us How much police brutality has cost us both in terms of life and in terms off dollars that the taxpayers have had to put forward And I think we need to begin to evacuate that Mr Compton Zara right before you start talking about 100%. Could shooting. Someone died. Someone somebody's gonna lose a little girl doesn't have a father. Mother and Dad don't have a son, their aunts and uncles. There's a family grieving. And what do you do? You put salt in that wound, right? Why? Because you live nowhere near the neighborhood. The neighborhood with the Chicago police officers are patrolling your high. You put yourself on the far Northwest side in the far south with sight. Very segregated neighborhoods. And then you want to come to us when one somebody is killed in a Latino neighborhood, said 100%. Good shooting on and you know you are by far not the only one calling for John Kenton. Zara to either be resigned are fired. Um, that's for sure. Can I say something? I did that on my own. I didn't know that others. Don't even think of it, right? But I'm happy. That's good. That means we're headed in the right direction. Voices. They're coming together. All right. We got to leave it there. Former Congressman Luis Gutierrez. Thank you so much for joining us here on Chicago's afternoon news had me back loved always always happy to have you. All right. On the other end of the break. We're going to get a check of news with Ryan Bro..

"Oh God love you. What am I talking about? Everybody else stand up. Tell you that pal and I'm not joking I'm not joking I really do want you to stand up its that important get up. Lazy. Okay. If I if I didn't leave blank, it left me could be I didn't leave. The Republican Party the Republican Party left me. Oh look at Arlen Specter. Could be a Democrat thing. It's it's wide open. So there's A. Bingo card for the week. We'll see what happens. I think we had a somewhat early we we had a Thursday winner I believe last week we did. Yeah. So it can happen at any time we could knock them all out today just don't know. Wow that would be wouldn't that be something unprecedented? Think, it would be the really gonNA. Go for that I. Don't know. I don't want to say frankly. If it happens naturally organically. Then you know it happens sure Got It. All right. So more writing over the weekend Portland I mean, are we just writing Portland off? Can we done. Can we give nt. Yeah, just give it to them. Take it. If you don't if you don't want to be ruled by ANTIFA. You're. GonNa probably have to leave Portland. So. I don't know if you're prepared to do that but now the rioters are using a guillotine. There and burning flags as they continue the meltdown. Portland Police Department said that at least two hundred and fifty people marched through Portland's suburbs. On the way to the PA- number. Kelly building rider strode through the residential streets with teddy bear set up in a guillotine and burning American flags and demanding sleeping residents afford them shelter and protection. Yeah shot up one man can be heard screaming get in the streets. Another woman cried, what are you doing to protect your neighbor's people in their houses? What are you doing? Get I get out of here. What are you doing to protect anybody? All you're doing is causing trouble. You're destroying your breaking down. What you doing to protect the other. Teddy Bear. Right is is supposed to be representative of Ted Wheeler, the mayor. So they're basically Oh. Nice. Wheeler is in a galaxy. Okay. So they've even turned on the frequent mayor who is allowed staff and all these months because he won't get onboard with defunding the police. and. Is there. Why we need the police in your town, right? Sure are. Just. There's no winning here there there safety in numbers they were screaming we protect you every night by being out here. Yeah. I don't think so. I don't think so. Please, come protect. Make sure you're offering US refuge. We're tired and yet we're still out here. We are simply asking for one night one hour. NOPE I'm sorry I don't have to adopt your malicious little agenda. Where you get off thinking that they everybody has to agree with you. Isn't that. Fascism. The protesters have. So they brought out guillotine. and. They they're just reeling it around town. And then they burned American flags doesn't seem chanted black lives matter. Are they desperate for support because they're asking people to join them? You know yeah, I. Don't know. Because we have like. Five of US left I. Mean that's what it feels like but it looked like I mean it looks like a pretty solid amount of people. Walking, through the suburbs. Which is frightening when you get out into the suburbs, people are going to be. Less likely to agree with your radicalism and more likely to defend their property. With. Guns. So, that's really not a good idea. It's not a good mixture. And I think, they're just trying to incite this they're trying to tossed the final spark in that will ignite that. That out of control bonfire in this country. But the mind numbing hypocrisies just. Even police in Chicago or stretched to their limit. Democrat Mayor Lori lightfoot has allegedly ordered a continuous heavy police presence outside her home in Logan Square and banned protests on her block to protect herself and her family. Now, you don't need any of that. The police are going to be funded you. You don't need any of that production just just she does because she's elite. And she's in the public eye. Wow. The Chicago Tribune reported Thursday that the city has effectively banned. All protests on her street. Including peaceful ones. Now, when this was the president of the United States, try to clear out an area right next to the White House. All Hell broke loose. How dare he used tear-gas on those wonderful people? How dare he do that and then walk across there and hold up a Bible? At the church across the street. But she's actually banned. Even peaceful protests on her street and the streets next to it because she don't want, she doesn't want them to have access to her street. So she's banned for blocks you can't get anywhere near her place. According to an email sent by the district's commander at the time officers assigned to enforce the directive were instructed to tell protesters. It's against the city code in State Law to protest and that they must leave immediately. After the warning is given, the street should be locked down according to the instructions. In. Order to carry out the orders, a large contingent of officers have been routinely stationed outside the mayor's home. Fraternal Order of Police President John, Kenton Zara. said that as many as one hundred, forty officers have been assigned to her home at certain times. One hundred and forty, two, guard her..

"Okay well I guess we're just GONNA keep saying tomato tomato because I'm trying to give my explanation and you keep making it sound like it's not a good enough explanation so. I don't know where else to go with you with this. That was part of an interview. I did with F. O. P. President John Kenton Zara earlier this week. WBZ. Criminal Justice reporter. Patrick Smith is with US bringing context and analysis to the interview. Patrick so a lot in that particular exchange, the president of the Police Union started to acknowledge that officers can do more to improve community police relations, but he also says it's on residents to build or rebuild that trust. What's your reaction to that? well I. Think you're right. There was some interesting. Insight in in the middle of of that. About of cats are talking about. Why officers may be jaded in, and why they may have a particular stance toward the communities that they're supposed to be serving and protecting beyond that I would say that I thought your points in your question about police officers, being agents of the government being paid by taxpayers in that the onus is on them to. To you know better interact with with the people again that they're supposed to be serving and protecting was right on and I would. I would just say I think his words speak for himself. This is you know. He was elected by the majority of the rank and file officers who voted in their union election, and that is so I think it's fair to say that what he's saying. They're represents at least what a good portion of Chicago police officers feel. Have! We seen any movement from C. PD leadership to to try to improve community police relations in recent protests. Well, you know the new Superintendent David Brown. His whole thing is community policing and improving relationships between the police and residents, and so even before these protests I'd say since the protests started. He's he's more or less just. SORTA doubled down on that but his whole thing is that there needs to be more positive interactions between police and young people and police and and people in the community, and that the way to reduce violent crime in the way to solve more murders is to build more trust between police and residents, and he talks about the responsibility of police officers to do that so as far as. CPT leadership I think that they at least are talking the talk about improving relations with the community as they have for for many years. I do think what what John Cans are as. is saying in this interview makes me wonder whether or not most police officers are actually on board with those efforts..
