Morgan Ortagus to Run for Nashville, Tennessee's 5th District
"Now, the mayor of Nashville, John Cooper, was one of my Friends as an undergrad, so I have followed his brother Jim Cooper's career quite closely. And I think John is trying to do the best he can in a city that's had a lot of bad luck. But Jim Cooper is complaining that the new district has been redistricted. Did you send him the New York map yet? Did you send him the Illinois map? No, someone probably should listen. I think it's a fantastic district. It encompasses 6 counties and a lot of people here in Tennessee. I find her just like me right there, they're working moms. They're pro life moms. They want to raise their kids in a conservative environment with values. In a place where you're accepted for whatever you believe that not a place where you get canceled because you have conservative values or because you stand up for president Trump.

"Regular little family friendly show Yeah To get this to get the sheet My mom says she can't do she The other word is she's really just stay away from that whole area But anyway yes gate are as real because it was a matter of life and death for gay people Right Yes We had to figure out Wilson Yes sir Well I mean not well said Wilson how well said for a show governed by the FCC But in general you want the people on F on free speech TV enjoyed your S bomb There you go ACLU It's well said for other filthy people like you All right let's Move on Oh wait I kept a tweet for you because you are a We were talking about pardon me We were talking about messaging You know that you and cliff sector who is your partner in crime there on the podcast First of all I was saying there's a difference between beating up on Democrats and Joe Biden which are the only thing standing between us and full on fascism and autocracy right now And talking about how we could message better right Like one of the things somebody had an idea about the what are we calling it to build back better plan Hang on a second Pardon me Oh that was my fault Yeah This segment is not going to the Smithsonian Okay Just wanted to get your thought on a John Cooper said Democrats shouldn't cut any items in the build back better Bill Instead reduce the period from ten years to 5 years everything stays in the Bill and mansion in cinema at the price tag under 2 trillion It's a win win Plus dams can run on keeping these popular programs in 22 and 24 What do you think of that I heard about that the other day and at first I thought what And then I thought oh God that's really interesting Look the idea is for example Medicare we're going to add dental benefits hearing benefits and what's the other one vision benefits to Medicare Imagine taking those away in three to 5 years when the bill runs out So it's very it's actually it's exactly what the Republicans accuse us of You do all these entitlements and then nobody wants to take them away Well nobody wants to take them away because they're really popular And if they're really popular maybe we should consider doing them So I think it's actually kind of smart Right Well I mean John I guess the one thing everybody's been talking about I wanted to get your take I'm sure you know who David shore is He's oh I read the Azure client piece Yeah Well right In The New York Times he's telling Democrats what they don't want to hear Just wanted to get 'cause you wouldn't cliff or so uniquely good at this But here's the truly frightening thought for frustrated Democrats This might be the high watermark of power they'll have for the next decade It's basically a cautionary tale about what could happen Democrats are on the precipice of an era without any hope of governing majority the coming year while they still control the house the Senate and The White House is their last best chance to alter course to pass a package of democracy reform that makes voting fairer and easier to offer statehood to Puerto Rico and Washington D.C. to overhaul how the party talks and acts and things to win back the working class voters white and non white who have left them behind in the electoral left them behind the electoral 8 ball If they fail they will not get another chance not anytime soon That's what he's basically saying And he's been modeling campaigns since Obama So what is your take on all that Because you know Chris you've got into this discussion when I was gone partially I think about coal Myers This endlessly frustrating John that Hillary Clinton told them the truth Donald Trump lied to them and they voted for Trump because we're bringing back all these curve jobs And of course the numbers are coal jobs went way down under Hillary Clinton was right as she always was Always is about green jobs and retraining people And whatever But Chris made the point that most of us have never talked to a coal miner And there is something about the way they feel liberals talk to them or look down on them And I'm not talking about just coal mines But so what is your take on all this Hillary had said something recently were again I think Hillary's right One of the points I made on the show on our show which is interesting because I thought it was a little controversial And I kept saying you know I get that we're all into infrastructure and COVID and the economy And we have to be Especially COVID in the economy We have to be Democrats aren't getting reelected But Democrats aren't getting reelected ever again if Trump wins the presidency We may not have a democracy anymore And this is no longer history Onyx or exaggeration We are talking about a descent into fascism that this guy gets elected again So maybe we need to focus on some other things too beyond just these nice policy issues that won't matter in two years if we become you know the Soviet Union basically and Hillary brought it up a little more politely than I just did but she said the same thing She was sort of writing and saying you know it's nice we're working on these issues So yeah that is really freaking me out I was telling cliff on the show the other day I had no idea for example that the John Lewis Voting Rights Act Bill I asked several friends What do you think it's about And they said well it's probably about making sure black people can vote and stuff Well I found out it also includes a provision that stops local state legislatures from implementing these crazy laws that say we the state legislature can overrule the Secretary of State and we can pick who we think won the president election So Arizona could just say you know what Biden won by 10,000 but we think it was Trump it's Trump and send that to the Electoral College Yes to me that's more important than child care right now I'm not saying we don't do the child care stuff But folks ain't gonna matter If we lose the country No Thank you We're not doing it Now mind you Joe Manchin and Kirsten and cinema Are the reason we're not doing it but maybe we need to figure out how to drop a new con them By the way I just make that sound that Roy Kent makes on Ted Lasso now whenever someone brings up mansion and cinema Hi Okay I'm going to be a heart wouldn't be bad either Yeah that too I'm not.

From Public Defender To Stanley Cup Champion
"So joe for those who might not follow the nhl super closely. Can you just give us a sense of what jon cooper has accomplished during his as a coach in the nhl. Definitely jon cooper is the longest tenured coach shell. He's on an eight th anniversary of his hiring on this week. The winningest coach in franchise history for the lightning. And i think he's highly regarded as one of the better coaches in the league and probably a candidate coach team. Canada at the next olympics are positions and olympics for the trump player so deadly highly regarded coach but up until this past season. He hasn't won the big one and that was kind of the big question surrounding it. And how would you describe his personality. Well he's a players go. She's a really fun personality. Like you quotes wedding crashers. Upper seventy six. No excuses public champion. You uses a champion. The only person you have to answer to when you go home at night is really yourself. The national media loves him because he is a great world this charismatic. You're going to get knocked down. There's no question people are going to push down. Because ultimately they want to see it fail if you think maybe teams on trips to like field of dreams when he was in earlier years coaching. He's all about the different sides and binding guys together on the ice and that if you get is connected as a group and the for each other and very process over outcome kind of guy and so you definitely has that charisma that makes them unique. I think the players like that. We'll show you recently. Wrote about how jon cooper has followed perhaps the most unconventional path of any stanley cup winning coach. So take us back to the late. Nineteen ninety s. What was john. Cooper's lifelike at that time he was living in a condo east lansing area couple remains but he was just trying to figure out where you wanted to be in his life. What he wanted to do for work. He was good ball. Charismatic lawyer but his heart wasn't in it always always wondering when is the fulfillment. When are you going to sit there and wake up every day and say. I can't wait to go do what i'm gonna do. He was defender district court in lansing michigan about a thousand dollars a month. You know we're going for indigent clients. He was working on. du is having divorces. You've got a two person law. Office him in a paralegal. He's still didn't know i guess. Were taken at that point. And you got in touch with the judge. Who worked with jon cooper back. Then what did he say about cooper skills in the courtroom and you just notice and how clients clients listen to prosecutors respected him i think is the kind of ability that transcends coaching the ability to persuade players to adopt your system or just believe the approach. So you know. He's he's a good salesman. He always says convincing players. Convincing a jury and i don't think he knew then that it would be kind of the key to him. Maybe starting coaching career. So how did jon cooper go from being this lowly paid lawyer and a former lacrosse player. Who had only played a year of club hockey in college to being high school hockey coach. Well the run in his son playful lansing catholic high school and they needed a coach and so he knew of john skills on the ice and new of his charisma and then he is asked to one day in the building. I saw the coach. would you be interested. He looks at me and goes. Dc the stack of resumes. I have he says. I'll tell you one thing you coach kids high school hockey team and i will take your resume from here. We put it here. Just this exactly. That was his first kind of foray into coaching hockey. Was nine thousand nine hundred nine hundred thousand lansing catholic cougars hockey team and that was seventeen. You actually talked to some of the players on that lansing catholic team. What did they tell you about jon. Cooper the high school coach. I think what's interesting knees. They remember the first meeting in the cafeteria where he's using himself to like twenty kids and parents and those us have just nervous as they were and are waiting to hear whereas the hockey background. Who did he coach before. Because one of the red wings was he part of this huge talk about law school in wall street and this guy another guys were in the nhl players. Even highly college players inducted himself would be anywhere high in coaching world. A reflection of guys play together. I think they'll be the first ones to tell you. None of them really on the track to make the national hockey league but they were such a joy to be around the competed their butts off just line. Who an awkward gesture. The of funny kid and team talked about like there was a hill just a mile from the school that the workouts outside the big hill. The he must've just saw he was driving around and he made us run up this hill with do bear calls and stuff. That is the source. I've ever been my life like. I could not long like off chris. Monrovia now works the red wings. Illitch family talked about how they had this practice where they had no on the ice and they're doing push ups and sit ups and kristin ross. Who served in the military students in afghanistan he goes. I went through the army for seven years. And i went through a lot of work out a lot of hellish days. Afghans dead. That's one of those days that i think back much. It's not as bad as back. And what else did you learn about his coaching philosophy back. Then you know like what were the things that were important to him that he really emphasized to the team. Making guys feel connected or part of it no matter if you were the best player on this team or like the thirteenth forward and i think jeff swan is appropriate examples. Like i wasn't the most natural coordinated like county out now who put me not aligned with the two players. Mike sack out with the most gifted athlete. That are high school in you. The team is better holding. Some of its part. They wanted them to play. Have have meaning and swan. Storing the biggest fools that season the most for player that year. So you know. He's told everyone the most improved player really halls like a special place for him. Something he takes lightly. It was a really really nice compliment. They talked about the hard hat that they gave out. After every win which was an all white instruction half that was something that the player of the game whether at block shot or a big hit or in ceremony the post game. We'll get this production. How they put their name and a sharpie but it was more of a. What did you do to help the team. Really recognizing layers who maybe didn't shop scores sheep but who are just dedicated themselves to helping the team. These success those are moments that came together that they remember forever and become an integral part of their story on a way to winning out like the championship. Well this sort of ragtag bunch of guys did win an unlikely state regional championship in almost mighty ducks kind of way and joe as you talks to all these guys who played for jon. Cooper what connections. Were you able to make between cooper the coach of the lansing catholic cougars and cooper the coach of the stanley. Cup champion tampa bay. Lightning guesswork me. Talking to guys. That new men who've now that he hasn't changed much in terms of his personality he had kind of style which coach's house you through professional level versus coaching. high school. Kids a lot of the same kind of tenants but he had then he still uses today. Kerry that floss with me all the way through the nhl in onto the honestly. It doesn't really change. Human beings are human beings and everybody needs to be motivated. It's just finding the right way to motivate. Rose stood up in my living room and watch the game and cheer tampa. You're welcome. you're welcome for started. His rise

Nashville mayor sees "a lot of momentum" in investigation into downtown bombing
"Investigation continues this afternoon into the Christmas Day explosion of an RV in downtown Tennessee. Nashville Mayor John Cooper described the multi agency investigation is having Momenta mwi, a person of interest already identified on CBS's face the Nation, he said, While investigators look for a motive, he's additionally concerned about the people and businesses affected going through covert. They've had the worst nine months. That you could have is a business and then now to be affected by the bombing. Of course, we're going to need help, and we may need some help in re hardening our infrastructure. Mary Cooper has speculated where the RV was parked outside, and 80 anti central office may indicate communication and infrastructure were targeted.

"Night, Mayor John Cooper confirmed it was a bomb deliberately detonated in the heart of his community, and the blast caused injuries and catastrophic damage to this very historic part of Nashville. Now, at the end of the day, I think all of us I certainly haven't gone from relief that there were not more casualties to know. Anger and determination and resolve. And John Wide. This was done is a big question. Do we know anything about a motive? We don't yet Sasha. The FBI is in charge of the case. Federal agents have poured into downtown to look for pieces of the RV and any other evidence. They're reviewing videos from security cameras, and they've asked the public for leads. The police chief, John Drake singled out the heroism of six of his officers. They went door to door evacuating residents in the minutes before the blast is that recorded voice inside the RV warned it was about to blow up. Chief Break says it appears the bomber did not want mass casualties because he targeted or she targeted empty streets on this quietest of warnings. You would think that this person didn't want to harm people that maybe just wanted to destroy, but we're not sure until we get further into the investigation. It's so bizarre, John that people were warned away since so many of these similar incidents have involved trying to hurt people. How is Nashville coping with this? Especially having happened on Christmas Day? Yeah, well, police have blocked off a large part of downtown and slapped on a curfew to keep folks away. The mayor's had 41 buildings were damaged. At least one collapsed entirely. The Red Cross has set up an evacuation center for displaced downtown residents. And damage to that 80 90 Data center cost communication outages all over town and grounded flights of the airport. Investigators will be continuing to crawl all over that scene today. Anything in particular they're looking for You know, it always amazes me how top notch investigators can unravel a crime scene. I remember back in 1995 when I covered the Oklahoma City bombing, a domestic terrorist blew up a truck and killed at least 168 people inside a federal building. And then FBI agents combed every inch of the area surrounding the blast. They found an axle from the truck with the vin number on it traced it to the rental agency and eventually tracked it back to the culprit. That's the kind of evidence they're looking for here in Nashville to find the bomber and bring them to justice and put the city at ease. That's NPR's John.

And you know Mark Immer, it's the head of it. But as we saw this past seat office not really off season, but You know, early in the year. They don't have a lot of power or decision making ability to do anything. It's why every conference in every school really had their own protocols around the Corona virus, and that became frustrating to a lot of them, BT they've also waffled have sought congressional approval and oversight for name, image and likeness is legislation that we've been talking about for a while. It's the You know the salaries that the head coach's air makings He's got dabbles. Making What 89? Maybe so so So's hardball. Maybe 10. Yeah, they're making a ton of money. I mean, these are these are for profit entities, even though they're not for profit, and you know organizations, and so it's becoming Mohr and Mohr professional. I don't want to throw that word in there because it just It flies in the face of amateurism. But what this what this likely will lead to is the way backing away letting the power fives or whoever wants to be included, because this includes Notre Dame as well of creating their own division with their own rules on scholarships, how there's how they spend their finances. You know the rules that they make. You know how the playoff likely will be, You know, handled going forward. It's it makes sense. Because this game is looking so much more like professional game than the amateur game that it was supposed to be. You know, decades ago, would they still be beholden to the recruiting? Parameters that would be determined by the group by the new division. So mean So think about this. Oh bt because this is how it is now, like the the D One Council or the D to Council ordered D three Council. They're responsible for making recruiting rules inside the they recommended they come up with the protocols. Say the D one council. We only want to give you 85 scholarships. Okay, Great. That's what we all agreed upon. So it's not just the power five. It's the group of five. It's all it's all 350 teams that are d one. They all adhere to this one rule. Even though it might be good for I don't know Randolph Macon in Southwest Virginia. It's not necessarily right being for Clemson. You know what I mean? But those one set of rules govern everything. So this this would be The Power five saying Fantastic D One council you can keep governing the Randolph Maicon's in the George Mason's and all those other little schools that need this this overarching guidance because they don't have the resources to do it. But we as the Power five as an entity that makes a ton of money and generates a ton of interest. We want to be able to make our own decisions for ourselves and form a new division underneath the delay the wolf, obviously government still, but it'll be a break away from what we've traditionally seen, and it feels like it's time. That really doesn't mean it's a slippery slope. In a lot of ways, but it feels like it's time would they still be able to play the big dance? Or they had like? Yes, yes know they would they that's carved out least according okay, so, according to this survey property, it's not even a proposal. But whatever survey just got to take the temperature. So you said roughly 60% of the power. Five schools said that yes, they're interested. What would the impetus be behind saying No, for the 40% that did not express positive interest right now. Maybe they feel like, you know. They'll get lost right? If the if the big boys start being ableto make all the decisions than when we get lost me like a wake Forest in the A C. C. That's right, or I don't know. I think of us Try to think of a small school and I got you. You know, Illinois Or etcetera. They get lost in the football. Indiana and I got just it's did you guys even part of this thing anymore, even though they are obviously because they're part of the power five conferences, but they get lost. Here's the interesting thing, though, bt you're starting to see this everywhere. So this is being talked about in the way, but you're seeing in like soccer, international soccer as well like there's a proposal that's being put up in the English Premier League. By the American owners. So the Liverpool which is the Boston you know the Boston group that own the Red Sox and Manchester United, which is obviously the Glazers, who on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers..
Spittin' Chiclets: Featuring Stanley Cup Champions Alex Killorn and Pat Maroon
"About confident free agents Biz while. Tab Maroon is once again an unrestricted free agent after winning back to back cups and I think we should send it over to him for his unique perspective on winning cup. Let's do it tied Maroon folks. Joy. now come on now is just the third guy of the expansion era to go back to back Stanley Cup champions with two different teams. He wanted of course last year at Saint. Louis. And he wanted again on Monday with the Tampa. Bay Lightning. Any certainly appears to be having one hell of a time celebrating down in Tampa congratulations on Stanley Cup number two, and thanks for joining us on spitting chocolates. Patty Maroon. Extra I appreciate it. Thanks Boys Arrived what an intro it's been a crazy couple few days as you can tell through my voice but. I still can't believe it. I it. It's nice to see you shared on first off. I thought there was no chance. You weren't to keep that going for the pod going to take it off, take it off of start. It off right but. You're speaking to your body. I heard you were having a sumo wrestling way offs with Ovechkin in the fucking. What's happened there? Who who had their? known everyone had me and and. I mean it was it was honestly what tonight that was to like. Doing way off with Ob and you know said there. Now of other boys I, mean it was not man like the whole the whole time. So it's good to hang out with those guys and actually have a couple of drinks get their personalities. Just who would ever thought I mean yourself. Acoustic. Saint Louis and to bring a cop to your hometown, and then you're you're not resigned which I trip them the other day I said, what we signed this guy fucking signed for nine hundred Tampa right like Jesus Christ but I digress. But then you go over to Tampa you've new John Cooper fifteen years ago whenever it was like just take me through your thought process on everything that's happened. If you really not even had the time to sit back and think about how special this has been. I mean I've had time but as you guys know the last. Few Days I've been. Pardons grank it. I've been bamboo go myself a couple days. So no I mean I had time. I mean when Kook got the call and he? When he called me, I got the call from it was you know he was like, Hey, what are you thinking about coming to Tampa let me talk to joy on Jimmy. Call Conversation with some other teams in the work but until then I wanted to go to a team that I wanted to win on and. And I thought Tampa. What they went through last year was I thought I can help their locker room I'm not going to help them on the scoresheet every single night but I know I can help them stick out from their teammates they can play a little bigger you know like Kuch can play bigger Tyler Johnson Stammer, Polat they can all play bigger and feel comfortable they have no No someone that can protect them that knew that a group That one at all and and I know I had history with winning Kooks. So was just icing on the cake. So I think he needed is good luck charm to win that cup for. You're too modest about the scoresheet thing because you're picking off sauce in the final game a mid air in the neutral zone. How good that one feel That felt good. How? Those are some Sekhmet Sarah, you look like, Kucherov on every single fucking bad pass that goes around him. He's like he's like the video game. If you just put it in his vicinity, he's going to find a way to get it on a stick in order to make a play. That guy is ridiculous. Kucherov in when he's in warm ups. Going like sixty percent and then that's a game. percent. Sean areas give me a shout out to about my stick. So. I can't complain about that. Now I mean fuck I don't know I black out there they go ahead my hands up in their bitching at the bench is you're telling me to get off and I was. Still made the places like shut up I know how long should be here. This long enough best partners I thought Volkov. It his first game and I was going nuts. Now's like who scored that I go to the pilots Coleman I was like Oh shit maybe I should have changed. Unreal that we've talked to other guys about the day to day aspect of the bubble and obviously you guys one in a great view guys. But how challenging did a gift? Not necessarily you but just the daily day to day grind of every day the same thing over and over again. I'm in it was a grind for sure. Are I think the problem is like? I'm so used to. An old but I'm used to leave an anthony every single year obviously the year before stayed in St Louis but I always used to being away from family. And I know some guys were asking me questions you know what it's like and it's GonNa hit home for you when you're two weeks and then a month and in a bubble that. You're a month and a half man and your family you can't see your kids and. And then when you get into. Yourself closer to the Stanley. Cup or the conference finals here trying to get your family Americans can't come in, but the Canadians can. Kinda sucks, and but we came together as a group during that whole time Toronto. We had Polka Ball. We had We had tennis courts. We had a pool outdoor We had like five restaurants. We had the beam oldfield where you can go over and play Spike Ball. Soccer football play catch. You know there's kind of a bar outside there's a restaurant open there at five o'clock. So we had we had thanks to do and trial. Then when you got the advertisement was kind of. The we call it the prison yard, which it wasn't, but it was a cement concrete where you can tell why guys in Edmonton were struggling probably more than the guys who? got the free ice caps. So I heard. Horton's. Best the. A free double doubles in the front. And So yeah, I mean it was. It was tough at times for sure when you're sitting there grinding your way, but we're fortunate to have a good team. So we never felt like we were out of it and I know you guys touched on a bit like when the teams down three one, three two or you kinda thrown in the towel just to get home like we didn't have that feeling we had a feeling. We're like we were wedding every single game and we're never done in this series resides in Boston down beside besides Dallas and so we always knew we'd find a way so. We're going home mentality attitude we came together. You know obviously. You guys know hotels you you. You have a few drinks, but it's Kind of hanging out and you really don't have anyone Cannellino beside yourself and your body is at your part of the team. So you kind of have to make make ends meet and I thought we did a good job with that.

Lightning head coach John Cooper, you blind, He's he's done for the series, and so hopefully next time we see him on the aces. Very controlled presentation. "Defensive position, but also created some great chances offensively. You credit the players on that you credit John Cooper. Woody, just credit the whole program that half this team's been together for so long that it was just a matter of time before they got there with the things you just talked about. Well, I think I credit you know their sweep last year to Ah, to Columbus. I mean, structurally, Goldie. They weren't sound in that series. There was a time in Game one where they were up. Three. Nothing in the game Last year. I'm talking about And they had two defensemen below the hash marks trying to score to make it forward enough. And they got caught. Odd man Rush went the other way. Columbus scored two make it 31. And then the onslaught began from that point on, so you know, there wasn't that belief in their structure, and I don't think there was that competition on the bench where you're yelling and a player saying Get the third man. Hi. Make sure you're not three men indeed. Those are all the things that come, You know that Come with it. Not just the coaching, but the demand from the players to make sure that the guys on the ice are responsible of what they're doing. Bangor. What's going on in that star's room Right now It's been a crazy year training camp started a year ago. The cove it pause two months inside that bubble, and perhaps Dallas is season because we know if Tampa goes up 31. It's going to be a real big hole. Dallas issues not is on the line here coming up. Well, the things that I'd be worried about number one. They started this Siri's in the playoffs without John's and Bishop. Now they've got Fox and Cuomo, who are two of their best defensive forwards, they're out and rope. A hints has only played 5 54 so far gold after going to that force is very violent collision. There was no call on the play. I think there'd be some frustration for Dallas. There's no call there. Yet they were called twice on calls that you could tell by their reaction they thought were very questionable, and Tampa Bay scored on one of themselves. For me, it's the danger factor for Dallas now is that Their players were going down and tough and players with a lot of responsibility. Langer. Enjoy it tonight. We'll talk to you tomorrow nine. Game five. Thanks. Thanks. Look forward to it. That's our analyst Darren paying, joining us every game during the Stanley Cup final, right here on Westwood one. "Be well fast years leading radio we continue Friday John Cooper standing by we get the right which make the flight that's a good team over there that's kind of been up and down the cuts of adversity with that coach leading midway through yeah yeah yeah has been a consistent but it seems like maybe they're starting to figure some things out here like I was impressed with them we'll see them again a couple weeks the lightning go through that western Canada swing yeah coming up in the middle of March so it's not too far away they're really good balance their line they have a an edge to them you know physically they're engaged in that game they came in angry at themselves because they they blew a lead against Nashville the other night lost in overtime to get the one point they felt they they needed to protect them you know when both points but Johnny Gaudreau you know is very exciting to watch he said for his number is kind of a mediocre season but boy he he was dancing around out there dangerous every shot he got out they feed on the block so well and he makes plays so you're reacting to him and why you're reacting to a mere leaving some holes out there and if his teammates can jump doubles gold okay go get him the puck yeah so expressed with that impressed with their balance up front you're down all you know is there any ground defense now he's back and that was the second game back after missing ten with injury that's a a mas I don't Riddick Riddick was good again the goal is to win an autonomous collective Tyler Johnson I was nasty you know it will not that of the year not right down to the ice and it bounced right back up under his arm it's almost impossible it's a good goalie it's only a second full year with the team and you know he's earned their trust for sure so all the way around I think they're going to be really tough out there during that battle mode you can tell they can they'll fight if you want they'll play a heavy game that we saw that so I think they're capable of all those things they've even though their overall point totals are down like Goodrow was well behind with thirty six goals last year sixteen so far Monahans you know down from what he was points wise but you know a lot of that is just the way things have gone for the team so they have three or four guys but Lindholm is had a heck of a year he's got great hands and Backlund is sort of what else a little fire in only fifteen points in this last ten games I think in nine goals in nine games so they're getting it from other sources that's you know that's what you find out like we were talking about was stamped out rail will see who's really going to start to take off offense simply with him out so I was I was impressed with Gallagher yeah it's a no doubt about that John Cooper speaking of good scenes of code is one of the spoke the media just moments ago let's go to that interview right here a lot of great the power.

"For the lightning they were able to come out of that to nothing hole in score pair of their own at the end of the first period and John Cooper said this morning to was one of those games it felt like they knew they were in it the entire time that they could at least get a point out of this one that they weren't out of it and that's that is kind of the way it itself through and through you know much like some of the other games where they didn't have great starts but they're within a one goal shot and they're able to get it done but a lot to build off of in terms of continued defensive play the way they were managing the pock the way they have during this eleven and one eleven one stretch has been really impressive in these two teams Minnesota and and the lightning just thinking about the last game they played it was kind of Minnesota was on that great streak in that run that was starting to look like they were going to turn around their season and then things kind of they both both teams I think when opposite directions a lightning are now having playing some of their best hockey getting the results climbing the standings words Minnesota kind of went the other way and now they're starting to have a lot of problems defensively their special teams are where they need to be so I think it's an opportunity for the lighting in the tough building the plan one that the historically have struggled in for whatever reason it may be through the years and Minnesota obviously is is a big measuring stick game for them in a tough schedule they have coming up yeah Dave in in Minnesota needs wins in a big way so you know if your Tampa Bay expect a tough game tonight plus Minnesota coming off a a game where they gave up seven to the Pittsburgh Penguins so you know they're gonna be hungry and for the lighting as we just discussed with Kayla you want to avoid the slow start but it's been a pretty resilient team this year particularly since you know the global series against buffalo where they're sticking to their structure and you never feel even when they're down there they're too far from the getting back into the game because not only can they score they've done a pretty good job of tightening things up that's true and you know they have rallied for wins in some of the games over the last dozen or they have got is clearly mentioned eleven and one talking a little bit more about Minnesota this is the make or break stretch in the schedule for the wild they've been down in home games all year right at the start of the year if they were with the lightning modeling even play a lot of home games in October it was the lighting in Minnesota having played the fewest home games that after they came back from Sweden the lightning out a lot of home games and they're actually at the end of this trip going to be exactly even twenty four home eight twenty four road there twenty four twenty two coming into tonight's game the wild still play the fewest home games the week twenty and they've played twenty six on the road they're starting a stretch right Greg where they play a level of their next twelve at home it's gonna be a long period of time because you get the bye week in there get the all star break so it's broken up a little bit they have a seven game homestand that starts tonight but it's broken up like a set by the by and then they have worn road game therefore more at home if they're going to make their move up the standings now is the time to do it because they have been all other things being equal a pretty good home team this year their home record is eleven five and four so they've done well when they played at home these are not played at home a lot it is you alluded to they're coming off a really bad laws markets Felino called it the low point this year they got bullets in Pittsburgh Crosby came back from injury at four points they filled up the line up they filled up the line of card wrong they deal with five defense but as a result I mean it was just wrought with peril from the get go and I think they're probably get a look at this game is a reset for them as they start this important stretch self from alightings perspective they have to be ready for that from the opposition Hey Kaylee big boost to the lightning's lineup tonight so Ryan McDonagh back in action and we know how much he means this team on the back end and getting it back I guess for a couple games before the upcoming break is is good for his timing and you know good for the lighting in general and for him to just going back to his hometown I know John Cooper and him both made it clear that if it wasn't because he's back in his home town that is going to be able to return when he's healthy and he's ready he's going to play and that's just how it is so exciting that it happened to be where he grew up lots of great memories you talked about this morning winning high school state championships here lot.

"Across the circle halls. This is the lightning radio post game report. Here's the voice of the lightning. Dave michigan. Ever go moment between the lighting and Red Wings. They've had a couple of really wild games here in Detroit this year in both instances, the lightning rallied from multi-goal deficits to win the first meeting in Detroit back in early December. Lightning were down five three in the third tied it and eventually one in a shootout tonight. They were down three nothing in the second period. Three one heading into the third. They would score four goals in the third in turned out five on answer goals to go up five three Rasmussen scores. The sixth attacker goal to get the wings within one. But kind of like the game last Saturday the wings didn't get much going on the the second sixth attacker chance and lightning defended. Well point actually missed a wide open net. But the wings had a hard time getting set up in the offense zone. And the lightning. We're able to close this game out and get it across the finish line. But really the the big takeaway from this game first of all the lightning never giving up. And they actually had a really strong stretch in the first period in which they weren't rewarded the when John Cooper shopped the lines and put stamkos with coup drop in point that line simply elevated to a level that. The wings couldn't contend with kucherov finishes with four points point with three points stamp goes, I believe has two points. He may get an assist added on the last kucherov goal is the lightning. We're able to get most of their offense in the third period. From that line. We are awaiting Victor Hedman. He's not there yet. All right. Hopefully, he's going to be here shortly. Let's get to the three stars brought to you by spectrum that line was so dominant and dynamic there might three stars kucherov is my number one start finishes with the game winner. Two goals in to assist another four point game for kucherov stamp goose's. My second star as we speak right now a goal and assist but the goal tied him with with gay on the all time leaderboard enlightening history. Three hundred and eighty three goals is next goal will give him the record by his lone seminary. Brayden point who scored just a second even strength goal in the last twenty four games. But it was a big one is got the lightning within three to early in the third. Maybe would also contribute to assists, three points for Brandon point. He is my number three star. Okay. We're going to sneak in a quick break. Come back and wrap things up from Detroit, hopefully, talk to Victor Hedman as well in our final segment with Gregg Llanelli, five four. Lightening your final alighting radio.

"Either discontinued go to work did get a ton of shots on net in that first period. But they've got two goals, but they should have about four or five honest with you. I you know, it's eight shots on goal for six shots on goal. They had eight miss shots. And did I would venture to say that at least three or four those were the great a quality attempts that miss Nelson after maybe sell just a little bit. Y you know, I mean, it's one of those situations where you look up and say L A's get ten shots to six but in reality Tampa's database had really good possession. The offense is if created some really good looks, you know, a couple of penalty kills LA created a couple of good looks on their power play. But once again, Andre braided points, it's gonna hit forty. It's impressive early on L A to play for behind because their offense struggles this year in Tampa Bay did that early with the power play goal. Paraded points to continues to be a goalscorer. Yeah. In in. You know, we we see him get opportunities from the bumper spot on the power play when against the grain a little bit. Because usually he's getting fed down low for the quick one timer, but he takes the pass from stamkos and kind of delays just enough to put on his backhand, flips it over Jack Campbell. You just finding different ways to score roles. It's it is very impressive for player in his third year to continue to have the production Torelli with a deflection. Good to see him. He's. What we call your playoff type player. Right third. Lied centers gonna widsom face offs gonna kill penalties. But he's also chicken off that this year, which is great. Well, and I'll say two things about that line. First of all that was grinders line goal. They really worked the puck boards. Are they really grinded it out down low kept winning battles down there? Especially to get the puck back to the point Coburn and take the shots. Relishing Fronta typically. And the other thing I'll say about that line is this is the second game in a row now where John Cooper is matching them up against the top line. Good observation usually we see as Brayton point. So this is a if you want to call it an audition situation, or let's see what you can do. I mean, this is the entity that you have the luxury that you have in the standings to see. Okay. How can an Anthony Sara Lee matchup against COPA talk. Yeah. Kotaro premier player in this league. Even though you know, the kings are having a down year. I'll is a pretty good player. And so you you put them out there, you give them tests the handles it. And then you start to formulate ideas in your mind as you start to look towards April. Anthony Sorolla handle maladies going into a second postseason the NHL and he's chippy he's feisty. And you like. Yeah. Absolutely. Again, grinders goal energy energy type line can get under other teams scam. You know, you Honey board can certainly do the job of that it at times. You know, if that can be something that pays off an advantage for you in the process, maybe drowsy an extra power play when power place a dry up a little bit. When you get to the postseason. Those are the moments and opportunities that you can take advantage of there's nothing wrong with little grinding the Tampa Bay certainly can do that grinders sandwiches, right? Yes,.

"They had was with Philadelphia. So that was basically they'll their series their series rival for a long time. I don't that was really is maybe early on. And then I mean since I've been here we haven't really played them in the playoffs or anything like that. So they haven't been a huge rival. As John Cooper. You're only coach pro hockey. Oh, I had. So I gave Bush afer think twenty games. But. Yeah. Other than that John covers the my only pro hockey coach, that's actually pretty cool. I mean, you're you're what in your knife year? Pro it's kinda crazy to see that is he he seems very approachable guy. I don't I don't know him. I don't I haven't really asked any of the guys out him. But he seems kind of down to earth guy, you could kinda shoot the shit with is that accurate. Yeah. I mean, I think so he's he's all I know. Right. So Tupper meeting on a given opinion. 'cause but when I you start to play with other guys, you know, Kuni last year, it was telling me, but all the coaches these had I think he's a really understanding coach where if you have a problem, and you go like talk to him about it. And you tell them how you feel even if you guys are like fucking each other off like you'll respect you for that. You know, he's one of those guys that easily approachable a lot of people like like when he came in the league or the players coach, you know, he's got this way when he walks around about like that. But he he finds a way to motivate players. And you know, his record speaks for itself. Blown. I got one question for you to wrap. This thing up where you were you surprised when is Roman step down? Yeah. I was pretty surprised. I mean stammer came up to me in the morning. I guess he had talked with is rent. Right. When I got in San retold me. And I I didn't like I didn't believe him. I thought he was just messing with me. And then yeah, he came and talked to team, and yeah, it was shocking to be honest. So he went in the dressing room address everyone in there. Yeah. It was a camp had him started yet. So, but you know, like the the week before camp when are like a couple of days before can't when when everyone's there pack. Yeah. He yeah. Exactly. He came in and interested team, and let us know pretty brief meeting. Just let us know that he was gonna be stepping down keeping role. But Jillian breathe goes going to be the GM going forward. So so afterward you guys just fucking obviously in the stick room it, you're just like, whoa. That's like full. Yeah. I mean, you're kinda confused. You don't you don't really understand it. I know you jillions been here awhile. Let me give me a seven year contract. Great guy. So I mean. Next. Oh my God. I got I'm now close to equally as make it as much as the other people. I went to Harvard with. Halfway, but no, he honestly, we were it was shocking. But it was one of those things like he told us his first family and he wanted to be around anymore. So that honestly, I I don't have really any more information than than what he told us. I mean, people have speculated certain things, but you know, who really knows because of Stanley wanted to spend more time with them. Wow. That's a that. We're ending on a very juicy note. I don't think a lot of people know how all went down so fucking spit and chiklis breaking news is is stepping down. The state of Florida trash. But. That's not gonna look good. And this video out. Thanks, buddy. You gotta you gotta tell how stammer I said. Hi, maybe maybe he'll come on the podcast. You know, you gotta give us a little. Hey, come on. I mean, he doesn't love doing these things. But he'll only doesn't ask him. But tell us tell stammer that wit said he was a mental midget for switching stick tape and playoffs business. Hey, I think they're I think ever brought that up to me actually listening. Oh, it was talking to come on your show guts. Killer corn a break the ice tomorrow. And be like biz fricken, you know, just, you know, plug your plug your tires from now on or pump your tires..

"Let's get to John Cooper on lending radio. That Dallas top line then regular officer. What's the challenge? Oh, they've been a challenge for as long as I've been in the week. There's certain players in this league have size speed skill and can play at pace. And that's a group that can do. It's. There's gonna players as good a line is anybody sees in this league. I know they may not have the point production that some of the other lines have this year. But it doesn't take away from the fact that they're outstanding. And somebody, you know, a group that we're gonna have to watch. Because oftentimes we come in here. And they've they've got a few points on us. And we want them chance we have to contain the start to head coach address that clearly something we're addressing now. And and it's it's been funnier that weighed in beginning the year, it seemed like Lawrence starting well, and then for a long stretch, we were we were the team dictating starts games and seems last couple here the trouble for us. But I don't anticipate that'd be the Mitchell. Educating here with your last change Skillet. You match. Cameron. It's tough and. We're fortunate with the decor. We have here you guys played in situations where they have to play against other teams big lines. So hopefully, you know, Ritchie's on a great job with that is getting the combinations out there that we need. But ultimately when you defend it's five guys defending. Deep core doing the guys are fighting back in the DS and on his hard going back on defense is doing offense usually good things happen, and we defend well, so protective of the middle of the ice keeping to the outside over things should be okay. All.

"The the loss to Florida just seemingly piled on. What what everyone already was beginning to wonder about? There was a moment. Not that long ago that this was heading toward a really great season, and maybe a playoff, but it came off the rails at the end how has that gone down in your state? Well, I mean, it's how you would think I mean Michigan fans were really decide themselves, especially the house. Speaking was one thing. I mean losing that way. Don't have stay it. You know, I think that there's just a level of frustration on people starting to call Jim the John Cooper of Michigan. I mean, you remember John Cooper in the early nineties but nine. A great great Ohio State teams, and they lose and you see awnings Michigan. He lost a lot of those games in the Dame as then would lose the ball game. I mean that was his track record. And and he was a fine coach. And again, it's fine teams. And you know, I think that that's if that that came up quite a bit is the John Cooper is Jim Harbaugh the John Cooper. And you know, you you look at that. It was defense that really caught everybody off guard. And here's Don Brown with the number one defense number one past defense going into that game no role defense, and so it happened in and then you go into the bowl game. And you don't ever Sean gear, and you don't have debit Bush. Devon Bush was a was a huge loss for them. And then they lose to starters early in the game to injury, and you know, things fell apart if but to see two games like that just get off the rails is he said. That blew people away. And and then I think the focus became on. You know is this Astaldi offense. You know, why does it take so long for them to get into a play? Whether it's going on. They have great receivers all about all is under people's general, though, the players talking about he's a sweet point one. He was the number one around the country coming out of high school. And I you know, everyone's waiting to see him being be a freak talent. And I think when Gaddis keep took the job and and his initial hashtag on his first tweet. And it's it's inconsistent is hashtag speed in space. And I think that that's that's something that's caught people's attention. Because I think that's something that's lacked in this offense. And you know, I think that's something that that that they think, you know, I also wanna mention that. They also lost two coaches to a house date in the past week. And that has some people really like on the ledge like what's going on with Madison Michigan state and now Washington. And certainly with ties to Columbus leaving Michigan for how state and then there's gotta higher comes up and everybody's happy again. So I think that that's how college fans rejuvenate themselves. Right. I mean, they they get some bad news. And then they get some news that they think's going to help them go forward. And and that's other looking at this. I'm sure the media narrative will will put Jim Harbaugh not on a hot seat, but at least on some sort of a seat going into next season. But the reality is what with the Michigan hierarchy. I mean is there. What would it take for them to lose faith in Jim Harbaugh? Like some of the fans. Well, I mean word manuals mission athletic director o- last month. When when there was talk that that, maybe horrible would be going to the NFL, and you and I talked about this podcast. I mean, he came out and said, you know, she wants him to retire for Michigan..

"The first time overall over five to sharks is your final. Let's bring in Greg Llanelli, and Greg look, I mean, we can wax poetic about the point streak. But let's talk about tonight's game in the little bit of time that we have. And I think that. The lightning had some things going against them. They fell behind early they missed some chances with maybe a little bit of bad potluck. And I think that the fact that it was the end of a long road trip in the end of a long road stretch seven out of nine the road with separate trips to western candidate in California did seem to make an impact on this game. You look at the shot attempts from the second period on the sharks. Had forty nine shot attempts in the lightning had only twenty seven which is really not the Lightning's game at all high marks the sharks. They did a lot of things. Really? Well, tonight, the lightning just didn't seem that about gas left in the tank to play catchup it'd be able to dictate play like they normally do. And you know, we like to do this. Let's give credit to the sharks. I thought they played a good game. Dave, and you know, they had some injuries to the back end. I think they realized that they were gonna have to defend hard or harder in this game. And their goaltending had been a little shaky at times. So they rallied with some younger guys on the back end playing there and know, Tampa Bay's you said some bad puck walk. I mean Tyler Johnson hits the post. We saw rating point hit the post Cologne missed the net on one timer in the first and. There are a lot of close calls back doors were guys were just missing. Yeah. I mean, that's you're going to have any that's fatigue too. Yeah. I think it could be and you know, an eighty two game season as we've seen it. You're going to have games like this. So John Cooper and his team. You get four six on a pretty grueling road trip. Yeah. I think you had back home and you'll get ready for Columbus on Tuesday. And if you go back to the start of this nine game stretch seven which were played on the road with long travel. Yeah. The lightning ended up going seven one and one that's outstanding. Obviously, they weren't perfect two games. They had to rally in a number of them. And they gave a probably too many goals and even some of the winds, but they will take it. And now they get back to work with the schedule starting to even out a little bit. They have another kind of medium road trip coming up here next week it's going to start. But then they don't go on the road again till the end of the month. They have the by the the all star break. So. They will certainly get a chance here in the next few weeks after they finish that next road trip to really recharge the engines, but until then it's still pretty much game every other day with a with a back to back in there. So they're gonna have to make sure they keep their focus here and get ready for Columbus. Which is playing pretty well right now on Tuesday. Yeah. Columbus seven two and one in their last ten Tampa Bay now ten point lead Dave over trial for first place in the Atlantic. But you know, one point you always like to make and it's good one. When you start talking about the separation between the first place and then the last wildcard, I mean, it's pretty it's pretty staggering. So Tampa Bay still obviously film, very good. And again, give credit to San Jose for a good game tonight. Couldn't have said it better myself. All right. I'm gonna leave the rest of the post game show to you, Greg. We'll see back at Amway arena on Tuesday. Safe travels. Dave, all right. And thanks to everyone involved in tonight's broadcast. Bill Brooks along seen me here at the SAP center at San Jose for Morgan lash back in the lighting reading our studios. Also, Greg Llanelli and Kelly Kelly. Oh, this is Dave Mishkin saying so long from San Jose lightning unable to complete the California's sweep or would have been the second year in a row, but stuff to do and they ended up losing regulation tonight by final five to to to the San Jose Sharks. Everybody can't.
