"All i can say is giving male. Rake say is that came in get gate with some violent things. Heart made andre. Smith look like willy anderson sa say just went down the line there. You everybody's talking about bobby obviously but You know just kind of got bills. There's no one remember. Marshall newhouse oh you do. That was just another just now. Nobody was worse than john jerry. I'm sorry good. Game i remember. He played decently. i ruin. He would so slow is so ol- a everybody beat him like a drum. He had wine piecing game and that was just because the expectations were super low. Like out of everybody. That name recently. John jerry is the worst one. Will you have nothing absolutely nothing. But people don't gardening left tackle. Sorry just roku greg. I think like the whole thing is is that i. I think there's a bacon. Excuse with him is because he's playing technically a new position even though he played more right tackle than left tackle. Since you started high school in you should have been training for both positions this past offseason. That shouldn't necessarily be excused. It's easy thing to bring up if if you struggling the preseason. He didn't play last year but again like both. These guys didn't play. they're going to be fine. I think it's just silly to continue this discussion in. Compare these two. Unfortunately it's going to happen because they were linked to the bengals like this but you know know the you know. What's even sillier than that. The dolphins fans just hate the bengals. Because we got borough actor went to bengal suck or herbert's fuelling people just coming in and talking about her like all right yet. Your guy. he's good. We got our guy what's wrong. What what why. Why can't we all just like good football. You know what i mean. Right right We can be here a few more minutes. I guess i know Zim you're running up against it. Or i gotta go guys famous. I gotta get greeks. I gotta get some clue you guys hold it down for me. I appreciate everybody calling in today. Keep on sticking what is cissy jungle rules. The nation best pond in the world uis worst up telling people with a great day. I love you guys. Have hunter s. memorial labor day. Yeah have a good one. I love you guys. You're the man's 'em thanks. We will will be here if you guys are. Maybe just a couple more minutes. I feel like i've been bogart. The the controls here so if you guys got some other i know we've got a thread running on cincy jungle Some good ones there. Ace matt john. If you've got some some questions here. I just wanna to say one day in corey. So as my god john wick. He's giving me some stuff here in the comic. Apparently i missed one of his chats. Sorry about that He just said. I guess when we were talking about the wide receiver position. He said jerry rice randy moss into row owned all had dropped issues. Chase will be fine. So i just wanted to let him get his shine there in. I have to agree with them. They definitely had some drop issues. I don't know about renting mas. But i definitely remember to te'o ones in jerry rice ones for sure i was never did he. I mean he always still is still kind of followed him. Is that just a prerequisite to be the receivers have john in the in the in the cincy jungle chat post that interests you before we on out you look into that. 'cause you're you're the numbers the numbers guy the group i mean when a person hasn't really had a history of drops we could. We didn't see that people at lsu said his hands were immaculate right. So we didn't see that for. This is a new thing. Is that like john. Ross that has issued in college. I believe to like statistically speaking. Is that something. That's usually not sustainable. Wouldn't new thing statistically speaking. I think it's just completely mental. I people that run the numbers on this there is no clear year to year correlation with drops. Not even from a week to week. Standpoint like teagan remember. Last year a bad we'd be like drop to passes against a blue the cowboys the giants couple weeks later he pops off against the texans can happen to literally anybody regardless of the size of your hands like the quality of the throw. If it's raining outside it can just happen like nobody's perfect. Nobody catch everything that goes their way and if it happens consistently in the because a mental block but now like there there is no strong correlation from drops in college. That drops the nfl. Looking just happen. And they can go away just like that unless your name is will fuller best-known return guy. Cnn who want to get to on a variety of different platforms here. Maybe more of a positive note I don't know anything else kind of bugging your minds. Just just want to get off off chess or something. That really i mean. I think we're in for a fun season. Guys like get ready to buckle in and just be excited. I mean. We're gonna get to see. Joe borough all our guys healthy. I think that we're going to sneak up on a lot of people are going to be interesting to watch and you know based off of what we saw last year. What joe borough was able to do with you know not. Nearly in my opinion is much talent on. It's going to be something to monitor. And i'm pretty excited to see how this team comes out. I'm not sitting here saying that. They're going to win ten or eleven games but it definitely be a fun season. I watch as long as we can stay as healthy as possible. So just buckle up and be ready for the ride. Because i definitely am and i can't wait to see what this team puts out as far as product on the fifth. I i'm not you know. I don't wanna look past any teams trying to past week one. But here's a question for everybody. How worried are we about an antidote revenge game. I'm liz. What about andy. Dalton has the browns and that that thursday night football game in his career as about as where it is. I am about any been the housing. How how good. He's going to be when he knows his fields behind him like just like watching out. I honestly don't know if that's going to be a factor for him. He didn't have to deal with that in dallas. 'cause was earth and having us very up and down in this preseason now no if the fields has the tuition had had an impact. So i'm very excited to see how he does. Knowing that is is time is limited. The head tells me not worried in the the heart. The longtime watcher of bengals games tells me to be worried. Overall though guys wet wet was antidotes. Kryptonite pressure the in terms of of the The size of the game the size of the moment pressure when it was when it was one. Pm eastern and. You're playing a really bad jacksonville team. And you're supposed to beat them by two plus touchdowns bad tennessee team at the time. Whatever and you've got a new. And marc jones aj green. Hey everything's awesome when it's off time when it's prime time when it's a game that has some big storylines associated to it. Andy dalton crumbles a little bit. So that maybe we'll he played well against them last year in but that wasn't the same bengals team at that point in time so we'll see what happens. We have we had someone tell us they were from. I think south america. They were watching us earlier. We got another text. Zil go brazil coming in from ontario. Canada it's dave you guys know kickers for people to he is asking about evan. "Not gonna get too bogged down and bangles talk right now we'll have plenty of that in the ensuing days leading up to the OPR next Sunday I actually this coming Sunday in Seattle against the Seahawks but there today the bangles re signed guard John Jerry. now this is a guy they released on Saturday he played in the majority of the preseason games died everybody thought he was going to be the starting guards starting left guard this this so this season but they let him go Saturday now they re signed him they also they also signed another tackle. this one's name is why it Miller. they signed him to the practice squad. he's a rookie out of central Florida and was with the jets in training camp but though they let him go so Jerry is back they signed why it Miller to the practice squad they placed a tackle who made the initial fifty three man roster shade do this to the reserve injured last and is there with all this tells me is that their offense of line still is not said it's still a work in progress and they're still not happy with what they have and why should day. why should day. their number one draft pick their first round draft pick last year the center the guy that was going to be the center from now until Kingdom Come benched. their most versatile lineman read retired in the middle of the summer. and their number one pick this year out for the year with a torn what is it Peck muscly has are torn shoulder muscles so you got some torn muscle he's gone for the year. so they're going through the motions and their ringers right now trying to figure out who's gonna be who's going to be their best starting five for that offense of line this is not good news less than a week out before the season opener but so what is in Bengal. anyway more on that stuff as the week.

"Orient, I don't know if you're still around. But if you are say, Hello, we were talking about farmers and the into flooded out fields over the weekend. And this is a deadline for many to file for their insurance. I think it will actually today was a day that farmers had to have their crops in the field. So love to talk to you about that. If you if you can still pick me up. Oh, we I hope to talk to Steve Bryan, the right. Honorable Steve Bryan member of parliament conservative from Winchester, and we're having a little difficulty. Connecting as you can imagine pretty busy days over there. These days President Bush met with Theresa May. They had a lengthy, I think it was to our meeting earlier today. And then went to the Justice department for a joint news conference in the president there continued to talk about Brexit saying he thought it was a good idea and thought Theresa May, would get a lot more credit. For her work on Brexit in the long run than she is right now, of course, Theresa May is resigning at the end of the week here we on Tuesday. So I think Friday is her last day as the conservative party, then we'll struggle to find a replacement for her. So are they going to choose Nigel Farraj, of course, leading to Brexit party? He is an ally of President Trump's and has really brought the conservative party to its knees a couple of times over this whole Brexit deal. He went to meet with President Trump at the ambassador's residence not too long ago about an hour hour and a half ago. But the president also asked about Boris Johnson who is the former mayor of London, you might remember he was in the government of Theresa May for while he is trying out for the job as well as is the Ford secretary. So we'll see. So with any luck we had hoped to check in with Steve Bryan about that. But not having much luck connecting with a now. He was joking with me that he was at the state dinner last night. I think that was just a joke, but maybe not it's now what? Going on seven o'clock in London. So doesn't look too good there when it comes to Brian that's one of the stories we're watching, of course, we've been watching Wall Street as well. And the president talking about trade in that news conference with Theresa May. He was asked to sort of set up asked about some of the people who've been critical of him, and he certainly entered when it came to said, econ saying that I think he said in a tweet that he was stone cold. Loser. He wasn't much more friendly at the news conference today. But then he was asked about the trade and trade talks with not just England, but also with Mexico saying that he thinks that they will get a deal with England done should England go through with Brexit and eventually leave the European Union as from Mexico, as I was talking to John Jerry not too long ago, the market seemed to be trading on the words of the Mexican foreign minister that he thinks that they can get a deal done when they sit down to talk next week are this week, I should say, but President Trump said directly that he thinks the tariffs will go into effect. He's a he's express. Shing desire to implement five percent tariffs beginning next week. And then going up five percent every week after that, in an effort to pressure, the Mexican government to crack down on its southern border the ideas that if the Mexican government can stop the central Americans coming in Mexico's border with Central America. Then they won't be coming into the US and presenting themselves for asylum. It's not clear, whether or not the Mexican government's willing to do that, although the foreign minister did say that he thinks that they can strike a deal. So that brings me back to the question. I had with Jerry in where the market seemed to be trading on the foreign minister's comments, and not so much on the comments of the president of the United States. So we'll see a about that. But obviously a big problem when it comes to the caravans and the people seeking asylum coming into the southern border of the US, they start at the southern border of Mexico. It's only two hundred mile border and the, the Mexican government had done more to crack down on crossings there. During the Obama administration, they eventually gave up on that, apparently the Obama administration had made had worked with them, cooperative hadn't threatened them and that it paid off. But it doesn't look as if at least at this point the Mexican government is doing that these days that is one of the keys, we'll see when it comes to the talks this week with the Mexican foreign minister as he is in Washington as they try to avert any further trade escalation, of course, if England were to leave the European Union, they'd have to have their own trade agreement with the United States, and the president said he's confident that, that would eventually take place that they wouldn't have trouble there. So that's pretty much the situation in England the president, of course, there to Mark the seventy fifth anniversary of d day. There will be a commemoration tomorrow, I think in England and then on Thursday in France. So we'd hoped to connect with Steve, Bryan. But obviously, he's a member of parliament. And he's just too busy for his old friend on the wintrust business lunch. We'll check in with the wind. Trust businessman it now on seven twenty WGN. Start the timer.

"In with the president's visit there, which is big, but Theresa May's resignation, which is bigger and that comes Friday, the president, handing out some praise today, not just for me. But for a few of the people that he wants or who would like to replace Theresa May Nigel. Farraj also meeting with the president, perhaps right about now. So that's coming up a little bit later in the program. We're going to start by saying a low to John Jerry and who's watching not ten Downing Street, but I guess Wall Street this afternoon. John, welcome back to the biz lunch. Well, certainly a better day to be talking to you, then many of the racist, just about all of them. Yeah. This is the best day on Wall Street. I think since mid-february. Yeah. It I mean you know to, to see a five hundred point rally like that, that's impressive, especially given the sentiment that was surrounding the market just over the past couple of days. It's been. At the Dow lost five percent in may is five percents right number. Yes, it is. Okay. Yep. And it did. And it was worse for the NASDAQ of course, which just was clocked yesterday was probably one of the worst days, that the NASDAQ has had in forever, but at least that was that was June and the NASDAQ up two percent today and yesterday with the concerns about investigations right from the government and did those just go away today or why is it that the NASDAQ is back. I think they thought it was just overdone. You know, we always have reaction to news and in some cases, it's an overreaction. And if it's an overreaction and there are no buyers for whatever reason at least a fires at much lower prices. That's what we had yesterday. But they didn't like the news about the Justice department going after many of these tech giant. And they certainly were surprised. I think stocks like Facebook were down as much as fourteen and fifteen dollars on the lows of the day, I wanna talk trade in just a couple of minutes start with Jerome Powell who gave a speech today. I think I think John within a stone's throw here. I think he's in Chicago today. And you talked about seemed more open, I guess, than in the past two are being willing to cut interest rates to fuel the economy of trade kitchen in trouble. Is that the big fuel for the market today? It's certainly one of the. A big ones. We also had some positive readings out of China, as far as what, what they would be willing to do against the United States and, or with the United States, some chatter out of Mexico, basically saying they really would prefer to negotiate rather than to have to experience these tariffs. Right. What should be terrible? Of course, those would really carve up Mexico, given that so many of the manufacturing goes back and forth, across that border. It's not just a one time cost, well and then the easing with Mexican fiercest helped the automotive stocks today. Correct. Yes. Very much. So I mean literally Ford and GM were down five percents almost immediately on news of what the president intends to do. Next Monday if his at least that was his initial for salvo was he was going to throw by percent tariffs. That would escalate to a maximum of twenty five percent. If Mexico didn't do something to curb the illegal immigration. Okay, and we'll have to see whether or not that negotiation works with Mexico. Well, here's my question. And, and you tell me I guess, but so we were feeling better about Mexico because the Mexican, I think it was the foreign minister said, he's confident that they can negotiate something. Okay. That's on the positive side. If we believe the next conformed minister. But at the same time, I was watching the president live in London today say, no, I expect to implement tariffs next week an expectation to go to ten percent. Then fifteen percent twenty percent is the market, just more likely to believe the Mexican foreign minister than the president. Well, we'll see exactly what kind of deal the Mexican porn official can offer is the president of our country, because he's very press during it by, you know, the videos that are showing as many as thousand folks coming across the border on a single evening in El Paso last week. And obviously Mr Miller has the president's ear on this apparently and whenever the president hears or sees anything about that he wants to hit and hit hard, and that's why he's gone to these tariffs, even though, of course, this is not a tariff like the kind that were doing against China right now. This is one to moderate a different type of behavior. I, I was listening to a former Obama administration official, and they said that they did get Mexico to step up patrols on Mexico's southern border. I think it's about a two hundred mile border where, you know, it's easy to stop the central Americans from coming in, but they were able to do it with the carrot, not the stick so much. So I, I don't know if this is gonna work. We'll see. But but in in the past Mexico has stepped up in crackdown. So that's at least good to good to see on that front. Okay. So Uber today. That what the quiet period ended show. Uber's active. Yeah. Virtually every brokerage on the street started talking about him. Also didn't hurt that after that just horrible start for lift where it traded into the forties. Very quickly after its IPO it has been recovering since so virtually every analyst on the street was writing positive comments about Uber. And the potential for growth targets is high as ninety dollars were set by some analysts, but most of them were probably right around sixty I, I the right now is trading just under its IPO price just under that forty two phone gonna talk about the market for high end watches a little bit later in the program. I would are you a big watch guy. I am indeed, especially big watching. And so I'm reading that some of the some of the I guess, used watches, vintage watches are drawing more money even than than the new ones. I don't know if you looked at the market like that at all. I have, and you know, it's, it's like you and I always say that asset gathers value by scarcity. So certainly, there's an appreciation for the design and or the artisan that craft about watch 'cause the ones you and I are talking about a virtually all handmade, but have something where you've got a production of a hundred thousand and something where you've got only known universe of four thousand you can figure which one of those might be worth more the based on that theory. Let's make this clear. Those the watches you're talking about the watches. I'm talking about costs nineteen dollars. Okay. People tune to people tune in to get a tip from you. What are you watching today? Today. We were watching biotech Stott called amicus therapeutics. F O. L D, they just priced about one hundred and fifty million dollars worth of stock. They did it at a better price than people expected, and the stock immediately rally. So that's a great thing for the company. It gives them more money to be able to fund, the build out of these gene, therapies that they do. So we were buying F L D full today. John, Jerry, and great to talk to you. "Studios. Steve Bertrand here on the wintrust business sponsored by wintrust Chicago's bake. We're just ahead of cubs. Cubs baseball. What am I talking about White Sox baseball as the White Sox? Take on the Indians on the south side. President Trump is on his way to Louisiana talked a little bit about the trade. I think he called the describable as he was leaving the White House. Where today the numbers are up on Wall Street, the Dow has been trading higher. I think about three hundred points is the last number the guy who would know is John Jerry from CNBC and the Nigerian family office. He joins us on the phone line to go over some of the numbers. John welcome back to the biz lunch. Hey, thank you, Steven great to be back on air with you, sir. I'm glad you here. All right. So what are we looking at is funny? We're talking about well what a big bounce back. But still only so far today picked up half of what we lost yesterday. Right. Well, you know, it it's gonna be more of the same not on a daily basis, necessarily, Stephen. But we're going to see a lot of ups and downs here. Because even when we finally do and inevitably we will get to a trade deal. But then it'll be okay. What kind of remedies are part of that trade deal. In other words, what will the United States be able to do if China doesn't live up to the obligations that it takes on because we've been down that road with them before? So, you know, last fall we were talking about a period of Allah, Tila, you're saying we're kind of in a volatile period now, but you're this this is really all about the trade deal. Yes, sir. Yes. This is completely about the trade deal. And you know, the president I think knows that he has a strong hand. And the reason I say that is because our economy, you know, truly is the envy of the world right here. There is no economy in the United States. I mean outside of the United States that is even doing half, the kind of numbers that we are doing, and we are obviously being as big a percentage of global GDP as we are that saying a lot. But I think China has, you know, basically backed themselves into a corner and the president is pressing because he knows he has a strong economy to work with and he figures we can absorb more of it than the Chinese can absorb another year of it. So it sounds like the talks are going to be all for nothing new in for a few weeks right until June. When there's a world summit. I mean, so are we going to sort of ease into a regular pace until then or do you think we're going to be? Back in. Yeah. Even before that, I think we'll we'll ease more. But back to the the the real significant driver our economy. If these economic numbers continue to be as strong, as they are Stephen I think we're gonna see the the market continue to lift but not in three hundred seven hundred point sort of range, but we'll see an awful lot more of what we saw basically January and February where we fifty points seventy five points one hundred points, those sorts of days as far as Dow Jones measurement as long as the letter is green at the end of the Aero's Greenham happy with with that. I can take that. Yeah. And I think that's what you're going to see like, I say, I think volatility will been flow more so this year than in most because of the single focus of the trade deal. I mean right now, I think yesterday Stephen we went to a seventy eight percent. Chance of a rate cut as the market was dropping so severely yesterday. And I imagined the market will absorb and take a lot of that percentage. Chance of a rate cut back. But I think the real significant driver is going to be this trade deal alternately being struck the timing. Wasn't so good with Uber. They came out with their IPO less. My. What do you make of that? Well, same thing I made with lift although I didn't have a short position on this one. I did in lift and my reasoning was pretty simple lift did their last raise Stephen evaluation of about fifteen one five billion. And then they came public nine months later at twenty two billion made no sense at all to me. So I wrote an article it's up on CNBC. If you go my name, and lift it'll come up, and I basically made the case for it's gonna easily test back down to that. Last raise the round as they call them the money raising around. I would not be surprised if Uber didn't quite suffer that same fate their last raise was sixty billion dollars. And as you may recall, they were hitting everybody for that one. They were going to Morgan Stanley. They were going to anybody who had money they were trying to say, oh, do you want in on lift we can get you in this sixty billion valuation? And they didn't have nearly enough takers that said I don't know that it has to go back to a sixty billion valuation from instead the lifting at whatever close to Mandy billion. So I'm not predicting that, but because they have more levers to pull they've got more countries that they're in. They've got we're eats and so forth. In other words, they've got different revenue available to them. But I still think that's a horrible offering. And it should they should not have come at this time. Basically. I'm Mark Cuban was just on CNBC right after the halftime report. And he was saying that he thinks lift waited too long. They should have are Uber rather waited too long. They should have done it earlier. What do you make of that? Yeah. I agree. I mean, I remember sitting with one of the dairy large. I won't say who it is. But one of the biggest Uber investors from the beginning they were in every single round they kept adding to their position because they didn't want to get diluted. And I asked him when it crossed. Twelve billion valuation. What do you think and he said we're fully and this is like three years ago? The guy I talked to him on air. He has never come back on air with us because I kept saying over and over again that hey, we have heard that it's fully valued at twelve. What is the greater fool theory here that is chasing this thing at thirty billion forty billion sixty billion I think they should have come public a year ago, but coming on the heels of lift with the problems that lift had that was a huge mistake. They should not have brought it to the market here except that just like lift they're hemorrhaging money, and they had to go to the market somewhere. When I ask you about a couple of stocks that are active today, Walt Disney I entered into an agreement with Comcast. Now while Disney controlling who lose programming. What's there? Wow. That's pretty big because Disney was really trying and they will be in my opinion, the most successful because they have the biggest catalogue of stuff that they can put on their streaming service already. And now by adding a Hulu to that. That's that's a game changer reform that makes it so much more difficult for AT and T which owns timewarner an HBO, and that stuff makes it much more difficult for those guys because Disney already set such a low price for what is six ninety nine a month. I think for their service when it comes bailable in the fall. Yeah. That'd be thing that that's going to crush the the competition when they try to meet it, and Netflix isn't the competition. Seven dollars a month out. Give me to watch the little mermaid again next nothing. Yeah. Exactly. Like, I say, I think that is something that really plays to the strength of their their huge Cadillac from Lucas tomorrow too. The little mermaid I mean, it plays across all the huge Cadillac that they already have. And now with the assets that they've bought I think it's a it really means that the other guys who want to compete with them are going to have a much harder time. I John Jaren. What are you watching today? Well, today, we were in buying a fair amount of Caterpillar because of the big drops that many of the stocks that are exposed to China yesterday. We were we started buying into Caterpillar. And today we were nibbling back there again. Because like I say, ultimately, we will come to a trade deal. I just can't tell you the date John Jerry and follow him on Twitter at John Jerry and watch him, of course, on CNBC on the halftime report from the Nigerian family office. "The AllState skyline studio welcomed the Tuesday afternoon on the wintrust business lunch. The Bertrand here a little bit later in the program. We'll talk to Representative Mike Celeski a house chairman committee chairman holding a hearing a little bit later this week on sports gambling in Illinois. He says it is a race where racing with Indiana, and I awoke to get things done. So we will talk to him about that a little bit later, but we start things off on Tuesday with John Jerry, and you see him on CNBC, and of course, from the Jerry and family office. John welcome back to the biz lunch. Great to be with you, Stephen. Thank you. I wanted to start with the Barry Manilow song. It looks like we made it. Esotique? It's all behind. We. We did it. We weathered the store. Now. Do you know the movie that that was from? I do now what was the movie I'll play really Chevy Chase Goldie Hawn. I was gonna guess Chevy Chase. That's right. Well, looks like we made it. Yeah. Yeah. It was great. It was a great book. Anyway, your point. Yeah. We finally did crash above the old historic highs. And now the question is do we set a closing high? We certainly are holding onto the momentum that we've picked up just in the first hour of trade, and it's just continued to build. And so, you know, I thought coming into this earnings reporting season that there was some concern in trepidation that maybe the signs weren't going to be so good those that the bad signs have not materialized have they know. And in fact, it was exactly that trepidation fear pessimism that basically set the bar so low that the companies are able to not just step over it. But in some cases leap over it. There were people that were saying Kohl's Princeton's KISS. Big retailer. There was a very large short. Interests. Those are people betting against the company that sold stock in hopes of buying it back at a lower price. They were caught flat-footed when Kohl's amounts that they're going to be accepting Amazon returns at all of their stores. In other words, they're going to handle a lot of that return party right for them. And that's huge because it brings people into your store. They didn't have to be through Coles or I could have purchased anything on Amazon, and I can return holes which brings me into holes, and I'm not gonna leave empty handed. Right. It's just like when you know, a place puts a gallon of milk on sale for a buck ninety nine or something like that. And people say, well, that's a loss leader yet. It is. But you into the store, and then you're going to spend more money, I leave with six packs of Oreos to Dunkin that. Oh. So I follow ING while I'm following a couple of relationships. I'm worried about princes William and Harry in England because apparently they're feuding and also the on-again off-again romance with President Trump and Harley Davidson, it seems like they're dating again. Yeah. Well, you know, initially, you know, that it was a a real all American brand that you could see why a guy that Coutts make American road could easily push for that. And then when they more or less when against at least to his view, not not against America. But it went against his view of what it meant to make America. Great. And they said they were gonna make motorcycles overseas. He was very unhappy about that. And that's when that, you know, wrists starting and apparently now the bromance may be bad. I mean, he right. He'd even urged the boycott right of Harley Davidson. Yeah, he he encouraged people to buy all the other motorcycles. And there are some. But they're not nearly as big production of courses Harley which exist three Indian brings his day. We're hardly talked about how the twenty-seven percent drop in the first quarter profit. They're they're blaming in part, the tariffs. But also the. Is that the EU is imposing on them. And that's what got the president's attention. And he is promising what some sort of retaliation for the EU, Texas. Yes, he is. And that could be partly why you know, the the Queen. I'm sure you saw that already invited the president and Magliana over to I three day state. Visit and you know, that's only the third US president to do that the other two I think being George Bush and Barack Obama that were accorded that a meeting with the Queen not just going over to meet with the prime minister. And maybe that's part of it. Maybe they're trying to head off both some of the negotiations that are going to have to happen. If Briggs it doesn't need happen along with perhaps trying to make the relationship a little nicer. I was listening to someone this morning a brick Piers Morgan. So whatever you think is working, but he. He said he does not think three Somme will be prime minister by the time, the president visits Great Britain, dairy, possibly, and again that wasn't the the invitation wasn't from her there. I think it, you know, she's already offered up her resignation. If they would've voted for the last Brexit deal. She put out an even that wasn't enough. The parliament to vote for it. So I think her days are numbered. Let's talk about some of the positive reports we've seen you know, my friends at Twitter. The thing about Twitter was they were never able to increase their user numbers. And it looks as if the they've got some nice user numbers and they're seeing prophets on Wall Street. Yeah. I think a lot of what they have done in terms of trying to limit some of the bullying on there. I still say Stephen it would be Faris. You're a steeper trend head his Twitter account. And it was that that was your name. Right. Just like it's my name on Twitter, but having anonymity allows people to be more bullyish. If that's even a word, and I think Twitter has tried to address it other ways. I think that would be a relatively easy way to address it. But nonetheless, those numbers were very impressive to your point. And the stock exploded higher by about. Fifteen sixteen percent today. Oil prices are up near six-month-high, and this comes not long after the president or the White House notes that they were going to not extend waivers to country some US allies buying Iranian oil. What do you think that's going to be for the cost of oil down the road? Overall. I think it'll be met by higher productions here in the US. This was partly what happened Stephen is your call. When when we crashed from seventy seven seventy eight dollars per barrel of WTI when we crashed it was because people didn't think the president was going to issue waivers, and when he put up the sanctions back on ran. And instead a he did he she waivers to Japan. So that meant that. Yeah. They can't just sell it on the open market, but they could sell it to Japan. They could sell it to China to very big buyers of energy. And when that happened that really caused a. Glut then because everybody ramped up production to meet what they thought would be a two million barrel shortfall. Generally, that's something that they don't want to repeat that I John to Jerry. And what are you watching today? What are your suggestions? Well, we were actually buying Avon as VP it's a relatively cheap stock. It's two dollars and sixty cents or so, and there was a lot of upside call activity, and so we ran along with that will probably be in that trade and where from a month to three months. All right. We'll talk again next week shot. I appreciate it. Thank you, sir. John, Jerry, and at John Jerry on Twitter. It is his real name. Also saw see him on the halftime report on CNBC everyday. "Talking about the fact that Chrysler Fiat was Dave you still there. I don't know if they've still in the seat, but David's gone. They're talking about the Chrysler, Fiat, adding sixty five hundred jobs, I think to Michigan just as we were getting an Email Jonah Jerry in that the Belvedere plant that Chrysler planned in Belvedere is going to lay off thirteen hundred workers come this spring. So what's good news from Michigan apparently is bad news for northern Illinois today? Hey, John, welcome back to the biz lunch. Great to be with you always sad to hear a story of anybody losing a job. But if there is any silver lining, it is that the job market is so strong that hopefully some of those folks can get even better jobs. That's a nice way to look at it. Because we certainly do talk about that quite a bit. Okay. Let's look Wall Street. It seems to me, but my completely amateur sleuthing here that the home construction numbers come out this morning. The markets go down consumer confidence comes out looks like consumer confidence rebounded from last month. And the markets recover is that the story or does this have more to do with your own Powell? Or just what's happening on Wall Street today. I would say it was consumer confidence and Mr Powell chairman all but certainly the housing number backward. Looking as it is. It was December housing starts down eleven point two percent. That is you know. Better than two months almost in the rear view mirror. And I think the fact that consumer sentiment has picked up again and the chairman Paul sounded dovish but confident at the same time in his Senate testimony. Of course, he'll do the house tomorrow. I think both factors weighed on the market in a positive way lifted the market in a positive way. And so there's a lot going on on Capitol Hill today, and we don't have to worry about Michael Cohen for the purposes of this show, but big pharma is on the hill as well before a Senate committee. Are you watching that? And do you think that will have any impact on which being traded today? I've seen a little activity and some of the big pharma stocks, you know, names that are that are household names, really like Johnson and Johnson at but nobody's really making huge batch. They would of course, the the congress is going to be speaking to these folks about holding the price and some of what they think are perhaps moves that have been too great as far as price increases and things like that. And that's what congress should do is ask those tough questions and see what kind of answers these executives give them. But does far those stocks aren't exactly getting hit on the news today. Some of them are little softer. And again that should be expected. Anytime somebody goes before congress, President Obama of what President Trump is in Vietnam for his summit with Kim Jong UN today. They each arrived. I arrived separately. But we'll be meeting coming up soon. Does that have anything to do with what we're watching on Wall Street or? Is that sort of just something that's on the side. We're not expecting too much to come from it. Yeah. We're not. Well, we don't know what will come. But certainly I'd I would say it's good that they're talking. I don't know if. They come to any sort of resolutions. I know that meetings today are very short at least between the President Kim Jong UN, and we'll see I saw him outside relaxing. The the North Korean dictator relaxing with a cigarette that was caught on film. But other than that. I don't have a lot of input unless it was perhaps a Marlboro. I don't know how. You know, we're probably almost better off as a world if there's not a lot of progress. Right. If they can if they if they finish this reporting some progress or some steps forward, that's probably more believable more actionable than if they come out and promise the world. Does that make sense? Yes. It does. And I think this time around they are likely to come with that sort of not that they've completely agreed to denuclearization. That's what the president. That's what we all would want. But I don't think we'll quite get that just like, I don't think we'll get a full resolution with China. But I think we're on the path to doing both. And that's what's positive about. The president was saying he's going to sign something with China. Chinese president Jeep pretty soon, right? Yeah. They are getting very close to the negotiators lighthizer Mnuchin think that they've got some of the agreement from the Chinese side, again, an president g was actually attending at least one of those meetings. So that's a positive that. And this news coming from China. Not just from us makes me feel a little more comfortable with. It's not just cheerleading by US a great deal that we want. It's China acknowledging that perhaps there is progress being made. Well, it's been a few weeks since I've mentioned Elon Musk on the show. So I think we're do word yesterday that the SEC is asking a judge to hold him in contempt over one of his tweets about going public or private. I believe it was how is how is tesla. Doing on. Wall Street today initially it was down and down almost four percent early on it made a full recovery. And actually went into the black today. These are the ultimate just said this over at CNBC ultimate by the on the tip traders for the stock. I can't understand it. I don't know that it's justified. But I know if you're betting against the Alon, you don't do very well because he has done phenomenally well with these various companies, we hope that he can be somewhat calmed down. Right. What he says about the SEC? I think is tweet although it should have been run by council before he put it out wasn't as damning as his previous one about funding secured forward and twenty dollar takeout. But this one was nonetheless something that he immediately backed off on that was five hundred thousand car production. And he was basically saying ten thousand a week times fifty two weeks. We're going to be half a million. And then he backed it off to four hundred thousand wouldn't it be great to know, how Elon Musk story ends because I'm dying to know. And I don't know if I'll be alive when the stories written. But you know this. This is a guy who could transform the way we live or he could be a guy who we becomes a footnote our best or maybe even a joke. One day. Yeah. And I certainly hope it's not the latter. He he's done spectacular things. So far doing what, you know, the big car companies didn't think could be done. And I think he's on the cusp of making that a profitable company tesla. And then with what he's doing with his space project. Spacex is also equally amazing even the foreign project. Amazing. So I'm I'm a fan I root for him. I just hope that his friend. Larry Ellison can sorta bottle him up a little bit as far as that stupid Twitter account. Yeah. I certainly I absolutely root for form as well. But I just think he's one of those. I don't know if he's a genius or what he is. But just sort seems to be on the edge. So so many times I what are you watching today? What you're suggesting. Well, we were buying a lot of United Airlines today. This is a stock. That's gonna move probably on news. The news being whether it's positive or negative, of course, were betting on the positive side that they're making some progress with talks with the pilot's union and so forth, and that if they do that that Wall Street will, you know, more or less applaud and buy more shares. So we were buying that one today at ninety bucks a share, and I think Credit Suisse just moved their target up to one fifteen for the stock. So that's what we were buying today. She John Jerry and watch him on the halftime report on CNBC follow him on Twitter at John, Jerry and great to talk to you. We'll do it again next week. Always. Thank you, sir. "Wintrust Chicago's think on seven twenty WGN. Day afternoon, everyone John Hansen in for Steve Bertrand here on the wintrust business lunch where we got a packed show. So I'm gonna jump right? And that's and joining us on the line as John Jerry contributor at CNBC and co-founder of Jerry and family office. John good to talk with you again. Well, always a good time to talk with you, my friend. Thank you. We've got the Dow up slightly the SNP and the NASDAQ down slightly, and I'm looking right at the lead page here on CNBC about recession ob- spiked to their highest level in three years. According to a CNBC study, I got a really dumb question for you, John. And that is if anyone ever asked me what I thought was going to have with the economy, I would just lie and be as positive as possible. And why can't everyone do that? So we all just get this sense of because confidence is what can drive a market. So let's just all fake it and think it's going to be fine. Well, and you're right. That would be an interesting way. But unfortunately, out the way they do it. Mostly. I think the the most recent reading the one we're talking about right now is because of the government shutdown. Mhm estimated eleven billion or more may have impacted from consumer spending confidence of consumers going forward and so forth. So those are some of the things that sort of from out of left field because he didn't know how long it would last right or exactly what would be the net result. So I think that's mostly what we're looking at here. If you call them next week since the shutdown is over. I think it would be a slightly different view. I'll be too jealous. Wait a month until we find out if it's gonna shut down again. Let's just ask next month. Instead one thing we're all well watching for these apple earnings that are gonna come. I think after the closing bell today. What are we watching for their? Well, it's since they don't break down the number of iphones the units. They're not giving us any input going forward anymore as to how many of those units handsets, and so forth, they're selling that was something the market didn't like the markets certainly likes transparency and doesn't like uncertainty, and you really couldn't create more uncertainty than by saying, we're not gonna offer any guidance handsets. Did they break it down any more? Did they explain why they're doing it? Did they just want? Do they feel like they're giving their competitors information that they don't need to have? What was the reasoning for that? I think they just kinda were getting frustrated. They know it's sixty some odd percent of their revenue comes from handsets. In other words, the new iphone X are and so forth. They didn't like the fact that so many analysts me included were so hung up on. Okay. Is it forty seven million is a forty six point nine billion forty eight billion units and so forth. So they figured okay. But if we just take it out and tell you how much money we made from selling fan, right? And you guys can figure out how many because basically what they did was. They started telling us how much money per handset rather than you know. So you could take a guess, but you can't really be very accurate because they don't just sell the new models that they sell in the United States. They sell the fives over in India or they sell the seven seven pluses in Africa. In other words, it wouldn't give you a clear view of how many handsets, but rather what the margin is that they're getting which is enormous earlier this month, they kind of adjusted their revenue estimates down, and they had done it. A couple of times and shares really obviously reflected that with a ten percent drop. They've club there. Way back, you know, the one the one advantages if you've lowered your earnings estimates is that you give yourself a better opportunity. I guess to report better than earning afterwards. I I wonder if this number comes out a little bit higher than than their lowest earnings amount of the if the markets will reflect accordingly. Yeah. They would. I mean the question that you raise is a great one. Is the bar low enough that they can just step over a longer half to jump over it, and given the, you know, just over a quarter of this stock was two hundred thirty two dollars a share just two quarters ago. And this last quarter, you were able to pick it up for under a hundred and fifty wow all the way down to about one forty five. So that is one of the biggest corrections we've seen out of apple. And I think that's why a lot of us were aggressively buying it here. We'll see if full rewarded after the close back so far so good staying in the tech corridor. The Justice department filing criminal charges against the big Chinese company while away and their financial officer. What are these charges about? What are they alleging here? Well, a lot of you remember about a month and a half hour or so ago, we found that they were they walk away and others were putting basically listening device onto a chip. They it become so good at it that they could put ways that they could track not just for the consumer and business went but actually hear what was going on in various, what might have been secure military operations as well. And the US was really angry about this said, we're going to block all of your chips. If you guys don't stop this wall way and others and hasn't really been fully addressed yet. So that's finally what they're doing now with this lawsuit. And they also Wilbur Ross made a point to say that this are obviously separate from ongoing trade negotiations with China. You wonder if those waters might be a little muddy? Okay question for you. You got any tips. Any anything you're looking at here that might be an interesting pick people. Well, I guess so I don't mean to put you. I don't mean to put you on the spot here. No, no. That's quite all, right. We're we're out here with a whole bunch of firms from around the world in squad valley, and we're out here because of the there's a big meeting of exchanges from around the world, and one of the things I think all of us are kind of focused on right now other than China is crude oil and the energy market. So lately, we have been buying back into many of the energy stocks that we dumped we're doing that right now mainly through the explorations box. So Anadarko petroleum ABC is one that we're actually in there buying today. John you're on top of a mountain, and we're going to be about fifty degrees cooler than you are here tomorrow tonight. So maybe one hundred hundred it's forty five degrees. Belly enjoy that Jonah Jerry and enjoy that ball five, and they give by Jerry and contributor at CNBC and the co founder of Nigerian family office. Always appreciate that. "Kevin Downey junior. I'm changing the subject because I wanted to talk about net flicks. But just Ari Shapiro says that he's got a problem with Chris rock because he had riders listen, Chris rock. Headlining? Sure, there's no real comments here. This back to where you are by having more talented writers. Write all your great stuff. Yeah. You'd never struggle your phony. Yeah. Ever road our special by yourself. And that's why your latest special is worse because he didn't respect Michelle wolf a neighbor. Gatty writers the way you respected Louis CK rich Voss those people who you were equals by the time. Okay. First of all just the idea about so he saying as a comedian. You're not a real comic because you use writers. Do you? What do you think of that? I happen to know that almost every bigwig comic writes their own stuff until they get to a certain point. And then they need more and more and more content, and they hire people to do it. Rodney had writers Chris rock, obviously had writers. I promise. You that Joan Joan rivers had writers. Yo. Yeah. I mean, every comic before before Carlin and all those guys almost all comics had writers. That's where you know, you're either performer or writer just like with songwriting singers used to seeing. Other people song then the era of the songwriter came in. And then it was kinda you had to be to step up yet to write your own things. But successful comedians. They're so busy. Chris rock is was like a movie star. There's you know, working on an hour of material. You can't begrudge someone he was working with Louis for years. He had he had his own show the Chris rock show on HBO. And then he's got to work up an hour. So he did the work. I used to be at Caroline's. He would come in and work on material. He didn't bring a bunch of writers and to write jokes. He was working on his own material. Then he brings it back. He goes over it with writers. He works on with like coaches, essentially, they helped coaches material. Are you fear is out to lunch with this? Like, you're not a real cop. So jealous is what he sounds very jealous. Yeah, absolutely everyone and there's nothing wrong with getting help Jim gaffe, again brings his closest friends in comedy to certain shows. He gives them four seats down front with pads of paper and says punch it up for me. Yeah. Yeah. He says help me out with the advice of his peers. Yes. Jerry will take notes. If you know, if you don't give them notes, but I know somebody who did one Jon Bush, my friend, John Jerry was on stage working on. But you and then he got off music. Hey, how about this? And he can't give them a tag. And Jerry was like. Oh, yeah. And that's what you do that for like, they scolded him and Bush was like comedians give each other notes all the time tonight. "And seven twenty WGN. Here. We are in the AllState sign studio. Thanks very much for tuning in on this Tuesday afternoon. A lot sunnier today than it was yesterday pretty Sony on Wall Street as well. The Dow is currently up one hundred forty points, the NASDAQ up forty one John Jerry in is on the phone line. You watch him on CNBC's halftime report and follow him at John Jerian on Twitter. John welcome back to the biz lunch. Great to be back with you. I call the new year. You so. Yeah, you know, and we have been talking through the years about the in the almost inevitable demise of Sears. And it just looks like it's here. Right. I mean, they were going to have a court hearing earlier this morning. It looks like there's been put off a little bit. But the Sears could soon be gone. Yeah. Exactly. Right. And. You know, unfortunately, conic brand like that. That was just hitting it hard basically until the late seventies early eighties. I mean, you know, they named the Sears tower when they put it up in seventy four I think something like that. And now here they are potentially just gonna be thrown thrown to the wolves salvage I guess or whatever parts people want, but there's there's other retailers that are in similar space that are going to have similar problems. I'm afraid issues me SOS reading one analyst. And I'm sorry. I don't have the analyst name in front of me. But they looked at it. And they said now with shears going, and they look at the malls that will leave JC Penney. Forty eight percent of JC Penney's current store base would now be located in a mall with at least one dark anchor and doubles it from it was twenty five percent before nearly doubles it which spells bad news for JC Penney which is already struggling. Yeah. And you know, there are a number of mall depends so much, of course, on those big anchors, the A malls, more than the bees. Really need that big, you know, whether it's a Macy's Bloomingdale's or even a series. But some of those be malls to lose it and to basically have them going into this liquidation is pretty dramatic. And like I say, it's it's a sad day for all of us who were Sears fan. I remember as a kid going there all every Saturday. Okay. So on Wall Street today a lot of green. And from what I read it's because not that anything good came out of the trade talks with China. But that nothing bad came out of the show. People are hopeful. Yes. And are more whole pulled because it wasn't just a tweet from the president or a an appearance by our mutual friend, Mr. Kudlow as great as those can't be. People are not so much tired of that. But they want to hear from the Chinese. How do they think it's going in? Dow Jones was able to get some good coats quotes kudos to them for how things have been progressing from the Chinese side. And the fact that it wasn't just a US Centric. Yeah, we're making progress. Instead it was. From the other side as well saying we are making progress. That's I think as much as anything why we're seeing the lift, hey, I was looking at Mattel too early on. And they were a big news that they were gonna make a movie, right? A bar a Barbie movie that would star Margot Robbie. I thought we talked about this movie thing a year or two ago, but Margot Robbie will star as Barbie. And that's been a big boost for Mattel. Yeah. The stock did have a twenty percent short interest. And for your listeners that aren't as premier short interest. Of course, folks is where people bet against the stock sell it in hopes of buying it back at a cheaper price much like a buyer hopes to sell it at a higher price. So twenty percent, which is a fairly large number of the shares were held by short of funds. Those aren't mainly just individuals. Those hugely big funds, and that was with the stock below ten bucks as the stock has come up ten through eleven and almost twelve dollars a share. Now, it's added perhaps eighteen or twenty percent just in the last few sessions, and certainly Margot Robbie would be a big hit for them. She did a great job. I thought in what was it Justice league or something like that? She she plays suicide squad. I think it was a suicide squad. That's it. Just part of the Justice league. And suicide squad. I didn't do very well as Queen Elizabeth win. Yeah. Okay. To ask you about one more stock and then get your tip behind. But I'm fascinated by what's happening to PG and E out in California. These wildfires might end in their bankruptcy. Yeah. They were already close a year ago prior to the campfire wildfire that kicked off this year. And they were blamed at that time for a lot of the problem for not putting these wines underground, and they had said they're going to they're going to move these lines underground, so they're not as susceptible. They did not do it. And now, I think it's just a matter of time before they have to seek some sort of protection. And that's why the stocks down from fifty now today at traded to I think fifteen dollars and seventy eight cents. So it's yet for for utility that you'll never see that huge drop. Give me some good news. What are you watching today? All right. As far as good news. We were buying square s q..

"Are coming to us out of Canada. And that's because Canada could pass a law on it's the law of the land across all of Canada. Whereas we have state by state, and that's why it's we've got dispensaries in states. And we've got some companies that make things that help grow the product. But not a lot of growers outside of that are multi state growers know, there are there are a lot of growers out there, John they just don't have the seal of approval. Yes. Exactly. Most of those are probably underground, even if they are about ground the second about a couple of local companies Boeing's sort of fueling the Dow today, but I'm interested in all states. They announced buy back in got a big boost in their stock. Yeah. Allstate. Take celebrated buyback of a billion dollars. Basically, they they were out there with that news just yesterday, I believe after the bell. And for that reason you saw that pop in ALL shares. I think the the the one you also cited Boeing is very big because that's the second year in a row Stephen that they have done twenty billion last year was eighteen billion buyback, and they increase the dividend last year and this year. So that's a I thought a pretty good endorsement of where they think their business is to be able to give money to perfect strangers. That in a way prompts the question, I remembered I was driving in this morning thinking of you and. You know, the the stock market very volatile. Things are down the S thing was that it's a low for the year yesterday. People are talking about a recession next year in all of this stuff. And I remember one of the I'm sure we talked about it. What are the criticisms of the tax cut was that it was going to be a sugar high that was going to really fuel things for a short time. It wasn't going to last. I don't have an opinion on it. But looking where we are now in what we've gone through since the tax cut. I mean, the critics who called it a sugar high. Are they is there merit there? Or why are they wrong? I think they're one, but the president made it look like they're right because he basically went after the tariffs in such a big way had they not perhaps the president not pursued the tariffs and instead had gone with some sort of negotiation. I think the sugar high would still be lasting in other words. I don't think it would have been a pop in January as it, wasn't course. And then a fizzle throughout the rest of the year. I think it would have been something that. Would have lasted throughout this year and into next year. But unfortunately, the battle that he's fighting. I'm not saying he's wrong. But the battle with these tariffs that have been imposed on US imports into China exports from us to China. Have as well as intellectual property theft have really offset the benefits of the tax cuts and some of the other programs. So it's the tariffs that sort of caused the crash not not the sugar crash. And we don't wanna use the word crash, but. John, Jerry, listen, thanks very much for joining us. We'll talk next week. So have a great Christmas. And I look forward to talking to you next year.
