"The job to bring inflation back down to the 2% goal is far from accomplished. We do have inflation softening. We figured that the peak happened in the second quarter. If we're being intellectually honest, we have to set up for some choppiness in volatility through the end of the year. It's going to be a little bit choppy, but overall we're going back into growth market. Markets are not perfect to not always rational and they just sometimes need to be given the alarm bells. This is Bloomberg surveillance with Tom Keene, Jonathan farrow, and Lisa romance. Good morning, everyone, Jonathan farrow, Lisa Bradley and Tom Keane on radio on television on the way to Jackson hall and John farrow of the cliche is its August. This one's different. It might be orcus Tom, but it feels like winter in Europe already. Winters arrive, never mind winter's coming. The PMI on manufacturing in the UK 46 in the Eurozone at about 49. That's some really weak economic data already Tom. And these central banks are hiking into it. Open question. Markets on the move, which data point matters to you, John. Foreign exchange the last couple of days, TK. I think we're both on the same page on that front. Eurodollar, can we get used to a Euro dollar? No, south of parity. A 99 and maybe a 97 if Matt hornback of Morgan Stanley's correct or 95 if Jordan Rochester Nomura's right. Tom, these are some big calls and they don't sound that big anymore. We're just around the corner. Governor barely will travel to Jackson holt will be interesting that photo shoot as they walk out of the lodge across the vast acreage of the Bloomberg TV set to the split rail fence, John, where they look about upon the Elk in the buffalo in the bison. What are Poland Bayley going to talk about? TK, what are they going to talk about? We've got to talk about the fact that they need to get inflation under control. I think we've sort of lost lost vision of the numbers we're talking about. I lost an understanding. Cities talking about 18% on inflation in the UK in January. I don't think we even know what that means. 18% and the second order effects are round numbers like that. It's ridiculous. And when I talk about natural gas in Europe at more than 40% in a single month and taken out the spring peak, the charts gone vertical in the last couple of weeks. I don't think we've really fully understood something. Lisa, as we address with January, as this is a Jackson hall of the haves and they better focus on the have nots crushed by 18% inflation. Which is the reason why the message is going to be hawkish. That is the consensus right now because the fed can not go out in good conscience and say the inflation where it is is okay what it is crushing in your words. The lower income families and it has been Tom pretty consistently. How high they can hold those rates though. To me is the key question. If they go to three and a half percent as January was saying and then they hold it there for a couple of years. What does that say about how much resilience is in the U.S. economy? And what that does to completely rejigger financial markets as we have gotten to know them over the past few decades. John, Jamie Dimon, just see me all day and said Tom, shut up and get the fill. So we're going to do this quickly on the data and front. John, I'm going to look at the equity market, a rebound off the down negative 600 points yesterday. Down futures right now, John, up 46. Thanks. I'll let that one go. Futures up two tenths on the S&P on the NASDAQ up at the 1%. What did you do, Tom? Yesterday I posted a picture of James Milner, shouting at Virgil van DIJK, and I was James Milner and you were Van Dyck and I was screaming at you not to quote the doubt. The Dow is the emotion. The signpost. For America. Okay, get to Phil. Get to fill. Let's do the data here. We'll do it quickly or oil. I'm going to save us with a rebound $92 on West Texas intermediate Brent $98 a barrel. Corporeal is portfolio manager at JPMorgan asset management for far more familiar dress. He synthesizes the JPMorgan view. And at the bottom of the research don't fill, it's real simple. You say America is the place to be. State the case for an enduring investment scene in America. It's probably the more resilient economy to the G four Central Bank hiking that we've been talking about for the past couple of minutes. Also, if you think about Friday and how much is at stake for Friday, I think Lisa is right. They're going to talk, hawkish Lee, but as far as what we have to do, which is invest in the capital markets based on coming data, I think the notion that markets have to move a material amount based on comments on Friday, we think is misplaced. So why is that? One, ten year treasuries are back to 3%. That's one. Two, there is not imminent easing priced in anywhere. There's a hundred basis points of tightening priced in between now and the end of this year and a 140 basis points of tightening price between now and the first quarter of next year. Also, if you think about how difficult this year has been, it's been because there's been nowhere to hide, fixed income has been a very tough place to manage downside risk. We think those days are over. Why? Because gas prices down 20 percent, Tom, from June. That's not the only thing. You have airfares down. You have owners equivalent rent, which is staying firm, but the biggest drivers of inflation we think are headed in the right direction. And more importantly, the tips market is saying the same thing. Okay, but John, you got to add two of the Yankees are down as well. I mean, that's a bigger problem. I thought we went until the end time. And let that go, just briefly, Phil, if that's the case, where's the leadership come from the anchoring market? Yeah, so the leadership in the equity market we think comes from the growth parts of the market that were completely beat up this year with rates. And just to throw another another Yankee reference in here of Yogi Berra, the great yogi Barrett's not over till it's over. If he was talking about the fixed income markets, he'd be saying, just because the fed's raising rates doesn't mean rates need to rise. And why is that? It's because fixed income is back to where it should be. As a ballast in a portfolio and if you're investing in the equity market, okay? I think there's more comfort now that fixed income could be that defense, which was very different from what we saw in the first 6 months of this year, John, when the Bloomberg aggregate index was down almost 12% at the worst point. John, the worst year ever for the ag was 1994. And we were down 2.9%. So I think that the environment for investing looks so much more supportive than it did in the first 6 months of this year because of the sheer fundamental ability to manage risk, which was missing for most of this year. So Phil, just to sort of underscore your point, are you saying that people who think that markets have gotten ahead of themselves and that financial conditions have loosened too much for the fed's comfort, have gotten way too cute about it and that this is okay that the real easing that we've seen in financial conditions through the rally and equities through the rally in bonds is just fine. Yeah, I think so, Lisa, I mean, you had financial conditions as measured by the Goldman financial conditions index, obviously, off the tights. However, they should be off the tights if inflation peaked in June, which is our hypothesis. You can't overstate, Lisa, the effect of gas and commodity prices, and how much pressure that takes off the Federal Reserve. Now, tried in the pay is one thing. I just want to jump in. What do you think we're coming down to? Down from 9 two watts. Yeah, so we're at 8 and a half now by the end of next year, 2023, if the tips market is right, if our forecaster right here between two and a half and 3%. Heading in the right direction. Now, John

"Your best guy, you know, find somebody else who's gonna basically, you know, give up pull, pull blood from the stone. I don't know what other phrase I could come up with on a short notice. You don't make the trade for the sake of making the trade. It's got to hurt for them to. They've got to give up the piece that they don't want to give up because you're getting Jack Eichel in the deal. Yeah, It's one of the reasons that Anaheim is interesting. I don't think it makes a lot of sense for Anaheim if they trade Trevor's egress as part of the deal, I mean there. I guess they have some prospects. But you know a lot of these teams. You have to be really flush and find a guy that You you're willing to part with if you're like Anaheim. They're pretty much where the Sabres are and hoping to build and get better. And of course cycle would help any team to do that. But you want to be careful. You don't become the Sabres. Which is getting Jack Eichel and having nothing else. Yeah. Yeah. And then you have the You know you haven't for five years. He's going to take up 10 million in cap space. And what do you have around him? And it sounds like they've got some nosy gris. Who's the Who's the defenseman? Drysdale, Jamie Drysdale. Um They have the third overall pick in the draft, so it sounds like there's stuff there. That's Potential there, you know, to put a package together. Um, but anyway, yeah, I just I mean, if you're trading if you're trading your franchise guy, you don't just, uh, you don't take the deal. That is. How do I phrase is you don't take the deal. That is the best deal because it won't come back and haunt you. You take the best deal for the the asset. You are now moving out onto the market. And then you move on to. I guess Reinhardt would be the next thing and maybe risk the line and after that, and all this should be done. What before the expansion draft, So no more than Well, that's one thing you have to decide. Do you want to do it before or after the expansion? Yeah, because who you get Will determine who you expose. Yeah, right. Right? Yeah, I don't know. I would assume I'm expecting at the very least Michael to be done before the expansion draft. See in my world. I would trade risk the line into because I would leave crystalline and exposed for the expansion draft. If I'm going to do that, then and protect the young defenseman, the three younger defenseman, I would try and move first aligning before the expansion draft, Rinehart I'm not sure what happens with that. I'm not sure how the They go about that he's not unrestricted. So you know they could always do the whole right one year qualifying offer. I would think I colon and risk the line in would be done or should be done before the expansion draft. Couple texts on this, you might have taken bad contract back to give the best package has been talking about that for weeks. That's right. You might have take a bad contract back. Um, you know, I don't know if the the text is saying that's what John Gibson is. It's a lot of money in a lot of terms for a goalie. I just think the Sabres want to, really if they want to get economic efficient and Effective. I don't know that a goalie with 6.4 million for five years is exactly who you want to see that you hit the key part on the whole sure you take bad contract back, not for five years. If you want and and typically right, you would take a bad contract back from a team. That's a contender like Pittsburgh. I don't know. I'm not saying that they're talking to the Penguins, but a team that's good and wants to get rid of a guy who for a couple years left there, But I'm not sure where Anaheim is going in the next few years with the eco trade to your point, Jeremy, But if you're taking a bad contract back, this is not Bobby Bania. You know, don't take a contract that's over $6 Million and is still Is on what to 27. You said. That's too long. It's too many years to take quote a bad contract away from somebody, especially when it appears you might have an answer at that position in your organization who would be really cheap over the next few years. I'm I want no part of that bad contractors. Give me Couple yet 12 years left, not a long term, bad contract. Other texture, writes in about the John Gibson idea. Because goalie is a spot, the Sabres will have to figure out who their guy is. It might be Leanna's All mark, but Texter says. If you guys sign your tax, I can give you more credit and say Thanks, Bill, John, Jamie, Shirley, whoever and by the way, we're getting connected with our fans brought you by Bon Shannon and King of Full service buffalo law from thanks very much good, sir. Alright, texture, So we see it with the saber. So when Gibson was signed Um, they were in a bottom of the league. How much that is to blame on Gibson? Well, here's something on him. So, according to hockey reference dot com, there's gold saved above average. There's quality start percentage. You know, there are a little bit of Beyond just save percentage. Gibson signed an eight year $51 million deal after 2000 and 18. And So we signed in August of 2018. He went on to have a good year that year and since has had two years in a row below goals save above average or minus, he said to flat out below average years, not good years. 6.4 million for five more season much just it's too much. It's not a good idea. Six more seasons. Six more seasons at $6.4 million. You know the Sabres about to drift back to be the kind of team that says We've got to get a goalie. We've got to pay a big goalie. Gibson. Alright, that would be at that year $51 million contract an eight year that is the maximum term with a no trade he signed with Anaheim and has had two years where I mean, I guess I want to say like like Jeff Skinner years because Skinner's failures are not all his fault. I'm sure Gibson's aren't either, but here you have a big, long contract and two years in, it's already not going well. You'd have to if they did, that you would have to say their line of thinking, I believe would be Philosophically or as we build this franchise. We need to get a guy in goal who we think can be our rock so well. Trade. The trade will include John Gibson. We've got Eichel in his 10 year, coming off the books for the next five years. Um, this is I think you would be thinking. Reinhart's not going to be here Long term crystalline and has one year left at five. Right? He's not sticking around for a next contract with the Sabres. So Skinner is still here. A post show has got a few years left. I'm guessing if you made this trade, it would be they would look at and go. This guy's really big part of us turning this around, and it's okay. The contract for six years and 6.4 is going to be okay. Because cycles going off the books. Reinhardt won't be here. We're still line and won't be here. Those are three big contracts. Darlene then would be well. Skinner's already here. I guess Darlene would be the next big contract you'd be looking at. Yeah. And you get rid of those three guys. And now you put in Anderson. But if you take Gibson, I don't like it. But if you take a bad contract back, you don't take a six year bad contract. No, that's too long. That's right. You take it for two years, Max. I think I mean, it's just, you know, one or two years done, but I wouldn't take it. It just doesn't make any sense. You don't I don't. I mean is this Are we talking? There's nobody else you can get it the the best possible deal with unless you take John Gibson from Anaheim. I don't think so. Then there's no Kopecky Lou Cannon, right? If he is the future of this of the net for the Sabres. You don't want a six year contract for a goalie. So I don't know if he's in the midst to whatever. Um It would be scary if he was. I think you could sign. I What if you tried to sign all mark for one or two year deal? It would cost what half that money and he is here and then maybe he runs with the job. Or maybe he's just keeping the seat warm for you. Kopecky looking in. Why again? Why would you want to commit a six year deal to a goalie when you have one? Or maybe two options internal in your organization right now, internally. Doesn't make any sense. 80305 50.

We'll be talking about her later in the broadcast. This is democracy now. Democracy now dot org the quarantine report. I made me goodman. In new york joined remotely by co host near means heiner mean i amy and welcome to our listeners and viewers across the country and around the world. Well democrat a kaos impeachment. Managers laid out their case against former president. Donald trump wednesday as the trial entered day two. They released shocking video from inside the capitol. During the january six insurrection. showing violent trump supporters. Were just fifty eight steps away from lawmakers democrats outlined how trump spent months and citing his supporters by spreading the big. Lie that the election was stolen. This is the lead house impeachment manager. Congress member jamie raskin of maryland. The evidence will show you that ex. President trump was no innocent bystander. Evidence will show that he clearly incited the january sixteenth it will show that donald trump surrendered his role as commander in chief and became the insider in chief of a dangerous insurrection. And this was as one of our colleagues put so cogently on january six itself. Greatest betrayal of the presidential oath in the history of the united states for more we're joined by john nichols. The nation's national affairs correspondent his most recent book the fight for the soul of the democratic party. Also the author of the genius of impeachment the founders cure for royalism john. Welcome back to democracy. Now thanks for joining us from wisconsin. Why don't we start out by you. Responding to what was revealed yesterday much of this footage we have not seen before coming from the capitals closed circuit. Tv when they would show that it was silent and they would narrate well. Thanks for having me. Amy and I think the best way to understand it is that tuesday was the procedural day. They explained why this trial was both legitimate. And necessary and wednesday was the evidentiary day where they explained why this is so important the evidence confirming that and the evidence that you shop saw was as you suggest in many cases new footage and new material but it was also a a timeline and what the various impeachment managers sought to do and i think actually quite brilliantly was to establish that donald trump had a constant interaction with this run up to january six and what happened on january six and once that was established. Obviously you're talking about the impeachment and trial down trump. Then you showed what happened and why it was so jarring horrifying and so significant in effect. What they're saying to the jurors in the senators are one hundred. Jurors is a this trial. Should be occurring be. His trial is targeted at the right individual. Donald john trump and see this. Trial is of enormous consequence because the incidents involved were in fact. A genuine threat is jamie grasp suggested to the transition of power in the united states. What are the most vital constitutional constructs of the country and john. Jamie raskin has asked trump to testify in the trial but of course his senior adviser. Jason miller said he will not a testifying what. He considered an unconstitutional preceding. Now the house had the option of issuing a subpoena to trump To get him to testify but they didn't do that. What do you think is going to happen. Trump has no intention of testifying. Trump has no intention of testifying. And it's still an open question whether there will be any testimony or any witnesses. This is a fast moving trial. And i think the managers have focused a lot of their attention on what they describe accurately as facts as what you can show people. The president's tweets The video from the capital the video the president's speeches wall of these pieces once they've done that then there will be the question of whether you might call a witness. I am inclined to suggest that they probably won't attempt to subpoena donald trump. He has said he does not want to testify and frankly his testimony. I think would probably add to the process but there is still the possibility that you will see witnesses and The fascinating part of this is that some of the most compelling witnesses are jurors in the trial. It's notable that. For instance senator lindsey. Graham from south carolina was on the phone to the white house and has in interviews said some frankly damning things about donald trump's a seeming enthusiasm for the people that were involved and lack of engagement with and lack of willingness to intervene to try and stop the violence and so we have some fascinating questions as regards witnesses but at the end of the day i still think the most compelling part of this trial have used the presentation the opening argument from the impeachment. Managers also talk about where a republican stand on the impeachment trial. Republican senator bill cassidy has joined democrats in voting against ending the impeachment trial though he said that that does not mean that he would vote in favor of convicting trump. He's among only six republicans who've said the trial should not end. And you've written a piece called trump's congressional co-conspirators are just as guilty as the president could you. Could you talk about that and where you say. Think other republicans will go on this. Certainly to establish upfront. You need sixty seven votes. If all senators are voting in order to convict and that point of this trial is to reach a conviction. at least that is the point of the impeachment managers and right now they have five or six republicans who have seemingly indicated some openness to a conviction boat as you. Well point out. It's not even sure that all of them will But if you had that group you'd have roughly fifty by fifty six votes for impeachment our conviction. That's a large vote that's significant because remember no president has ever been convicted however it is insufficient. The question in this senate is weather mitch. Mcconnell really is the keyboard and then. I think john thune decide whether they might at some point. Determine to lead a group of senators either to not vote or to vote for conviction. I think that's really an outside prospect but it's certainly the one that jamie raskin in the impeachment. Managers are aiming at what we do know. I think what we can be assured of is there are a number of members of the senate who absolutely will not vote to convict donald trump..
