"This is NASCAR live. Now back to Mike Bagley. We continue along on this week's NASCAR. Live that ask our xfinity series races Sunday at Iowa speedway and John hundred check. We'll be there are Woody came sat down with John hunter ahead of this week's racing action as we move to this middle ish part of the season. How do you feel about where you guys? All right now, it's a really good rookie battle between you in about three other guys, right there in a tight not. Yeah definitely is I wish that we were leading by landslide that definitely happening right now. I feel like our season is kind of being quiet and we've been in top ten most weeks, we've run decent most weeks, and we just continue to improve our equipment. I think the biggest thing is how do we get enough speed to run with her bell Tyler Rettig and co Casta right now? So you mentioned the, the racist coming up, and they're really good for you historically gateway, an Iowa, and I remember when you. Won back to back truck races. When you really had to at the time it, can you re re rekindle some of that magic. Yeah. Wish the Minniti series went to gateway. But overall that's a really fun race track. The Iowa actually tested there earlier this year in an xfinity car is well, trying to get myself better there in annex Finnity car, but ran really well. There in the trucks are really liked the racetrack. It's more now in move around bottom to top have one there in the past. So really looking forward to going there. I feel like Chad and the guys we have a good starting point going back for this race, after our tests. So hopefully, we can be fast right off the truck and be a contender for sure. When you went to Iowa, you went to do some media a little bit early in advance of the race. And I noticed one of the things that jumped out was you said the most poignant moment to you was visiting the children's hospital in taking some some bears there. That's, that's got to be a real wakeup call doesn't it? Yeah. I it definitely is. I was fortunate enough to. Be in the position I am. And to have the childhood that I had. And I couldn't imagine being a kid, having to go in for open heart, surgery, or chemotherapy or something like that. So young mino- is really neat to see Iwa speedway in NASCAR foundation come together and put something together for mercy one hospital a pediatric unit there. And we actually took these like power wheels cars that are remote control or they the kids can drive them and being able to take the kid away from their parents. It's rough like I'm sure that there's a lot of tears being shed, but these kids can actually sit in these power wheels, and be able to drive them to where they're going to keep their mind off, actually what is happening in the NASCAR foundations sent a ton of speedy bear. So it was really neat to be able to pass those out a little bit. And just have a good time. I mean as a kid growing up in the sport in asker, y'all must take for granted. What a fire suit means. As a hero almost wearing a Cape or someone that looks up to, you know, that, that's cool. But kids are everything like they drive the our sport their fans. And if you can make a memory for a kid to remember for a lifetime, you checked off a box in my opinion. So being able to go there and just be a part of that is so special now tell the truth, you organized some races in the hallway while you were there, didn't you? We did. And I actually got beat by one of the patients. No, I wasn't in control. So it was a team effort between my teammate Brett Moffitt myself. Here's a little slow on the control. So next time you see. Yeah. Yeah. Next time you see him and give him some pointers on how to drive a little bit better or at least a power wheels anyways. But overall it was a lot of fun. Just able to put smile on the kids faces. I couldn't imagine what they're going through every day. Yeah. And it's I guess something like that. Several guys who've done similar things say,.

"Two now. He's double the he has four wins this race. Chac ten top five sixteen top tens three polls transfer twelve point six one five up next driver spotlight. WB on T F L W, w we are acronym, heavy on the show like us at Facebook dot com slash final lap. My name's Gary Murphy. His name is Toby Christie and I call this entire program the final lap weekly. And we've got we've got a driver spotlight, which I'm not sure is different from other things. But it makes it sound impressive. It. Sure does man. It really sounds like we have our act together. All right. Let's hear this piece from William Byron, and houses. Competence level has it changed at all from last year. Twenty eighteen to this season where he's doing much better. I would say that, just the more experience you have in the more success. It comes at this level. The more comfort you get racing around the guys to racing around and things like that. So I think that, that's led to some confidence is just having more speed having CHAD'S ability to kind of lead the team, I think, is, I guess, one step ahead of things, which is really nice. And he's brought some that comfort for me to just know that I can get in the car. Do my job. And I know that everything's going to be close to write. Once we get to the track, which is a big credit to him and Tyler Karchi and all the engineers on our team that do a great job about the other Cup series drivers out there on the race track. Are they giving William Byron any respect yet? I mean, I think it's like it builds over time because you have to race around the guys to for them to know how you race in just. No. How they raise to kind of know what their tendencies are what they're going to do the level of aggression in the Cup series is so much higher than than the other series that I've been a part of. So you're racing against twenty to twenty five really cars versus you know, however many and any other series. So that's the biggest difference. I think is the level of competition, you just kind of acclimate yourself to that. And even last week was a pretty big breakthrough just to be a part of that also race was a huge honor for me and kind of exclusive kind of feeling which is pretty cool for two weeks NASCAR has been at the same race track. Charlotte Motor Speedway with their all star weekend. And then the coke six hundred it's also their home race track. So has that helped being at home for a couple of weeks straight? Here's driver, William Byron. Yeah. Definitely. I mean you pull into the same race track in the same garage solids really that, that stuff all helps. I mean it's the first week that our team on the twenty four team does a lot of simulation work. So we do a lot of training in the sim that Chevrolet gives us up in up in huntersville. And it's the first. Time that we can actually go back and look at what we did after the race and say, okay. Now, we can apply to what we're doing the next weekend. We've never been able to do that. We're kind of a relatively new team. So I, I know that when we go back to places for the second time as a as a group on the twenty four we're going to be better. So it helps that we're able to do that one week later, which is really cool. He was the Coca Cola six hundred pole-sitter finished ninth in the race. But what was William Byron's best race weekends so far here in twenty nineteen, I would say, also race and now we can was our.

"Of those one day I've actually had people. Tell me they've been to the race. They've been on on pit road. They've seen the cars and there they were unimpressed. They're like, you know, these are new do people unfamiliar with the sport at all. Or like why do the cars look so old? I know you have a couple of just a couple years ago, you had analog gauges still. So, yeah. I mean it's been for the extending tricks, here's you still have that. So it's, it's really kind of imbera saying, sometimes when you're trying to bring new people in who don't understand in, they back on why you run and stuff from nineteen sixty still understand. We're gonna talk about this a lot, I think, in the in the coming shows but let's get into Pocono. Dick as long I forgot. How heavy this thing is my stick. I have to. So why don't we have it so thick? Is that so it doesn't snap because of how long it is. Or. It's really dusty to right. I got my Nimitz stick. I'm ready. We are talking Coconino the tricky triangle because there's no fourth turn. That's how it works. That is how triangles work there three points. Speaking of solar farms, and electric vehicles solar farm, right there on the facility powering one hundred percent of the, the, the whole place. And I'm sure there are people out there that hate that too. Damn that Pocono, getting free power suck at it right from the sun. You know, the sun's gonna burn out if you do that, you know, actually when you thinking about it people didn't really hate Pocono for a long time. The, the race was always kind of boring kind of drawn out, but people still appreciate it because a triangle race track is totally different wolf last few years, there's been a huge upheaval about it. And maybe it is tied to that solar farm may be there's a lot of hate going on out there. Two point five miles in length and Toby tells us the intricate details of every turn yes, they're all based off of different race tracks icon tracks from across the country about banking interns. One, it is fourteen degrees based off the old Trenton speedway banking turn to eight degrees and Simon badgen it was in this race. He'd be great because base off ample.

"Christie dot com. Yes. Hey, see how incorporated you. I'm I'm trying to make you feel a part of the show. Feel good about that felt so up to this point five hundred seventy episodes. I feel I thought I bring you, you finally found a way to intertwine me into your show. Great. All right. We begin with the final TV ratings from last week's six hundred Charlotte Motor Speedway. And the news all positive the final Nielsen rating was two point six disappointed. They're all positive what? And the news all positive in and the news is all positive. There you go. That's not sounds good. Okay. I didn't know you were coaching me through this. Well, just like you were depressed that they were better being more casual and you just ruin the flow so you do the rest. Okay. Well, that's fine. The rating was a two point six which actually equals thirteen percent increase from two point three last the season. So that's pretty cool. It also reached four point three million viewers, which is a five percent gain from lashes rates, which had four point one million viewers. And this is awesome because the overnight ratings that we saw charting eight percent increase in the Nielsen rating, and we hit thirteen percent. So this is this big gain guys. Definitely, that's, that's a lot of people watching. So that's good for motor sports. Good for I mean. Yeah, obviously the crowd itself at Indy was good. I'm sure there ratings were good as well. Their ratings were slightly better. So they had the on the day as far as more sports concern. But this, this is definitely a positive. Positive performance for NASCAR and the coke six hundred because we've been seeing some bad stuff as the last few years. So even a glimmer of Hopi. I know it's a special weekend and all, but it's still good. Right. Well, a lot of people going into overtime such a long race. Do we need a successor mile race yet carry Murphy, San this thing needs to be two hundred miles Lewis saying that people like you and I think NBC sports at around tables, every was having around he'll bad, any Hamlin. So they don't Essex Ramal racing anymore. And here we go. We have six hundred mile race. It's one of the best races the season, by the way, and we have great ratings. So I think everybody's just shut up and let us say six hundred miles. Well, every, you know, originally the six hundred miles was to test man and machine. And now you know both are still solid. No, the tires weren't not machine. That's good year. And I by the way, I have a conspiracy theory, I think I probably know but tire companies have been around a long time. They know what they're doing. Right. They okay are purposely continuing to make tires, pretty much the same way they always have with air. Inside. I'm sure they have technology that they could be solid or impenetrable or whatever, but they know their business tank if you're picking up nails and nothing happens to them, you don't think that you'd probably want something a little bit more cushioning than like a steel tire. I'm sure they know how to make it by now. That's all I'm saying. Well, you're gonna remember you have to have grip. Texture grip the surface, you're on. But you also have to have some give because we hit something, you don't want to sit there and knock your teeth out every time you hit a pothole Kerry, they could make a like a squishy gel like interior. That doesn't hurt the tires. Now, I know they have run flats, and they do have these kinds of tires, but, boy, they're not promoting them. I do recall a very fair amount of promotion of these run flat tires back in the day. Yeah. I my wife has a run flats on hers. You know what we had to go after she blew out. They're not magic. Well, they're not there aren't blow out proof. It's if you get a puncture it, it'll last for fifty miles or whatever. Yeah. I don't believe it. It's a scam. It's, you know, also new cars, don't come with, with spare tires because, you know, the cheap people back in wherever they make the cars decided..

"Is really cool. It's, it's for every runner. It's a dream come to, to be able to go run the Boston marathon. I know he was out running this morning. If I get time, I think we're gonna go run later this afternoon in Phoenix with him. He's been a great person to watch from the cycling industry from the running industry. He's kind of the person that kind of kicked everything off for the NASCAR world. I would say so the guy like that, and to be a seven time champion everyone wants to start doing that. Right. So it just makes yourself Dr go up even more couple of tracks on the schedule coming up. Martinsville. What's your outlook? Martinsville's great place, satellite. We don't run the extended cars there. I don't know if I'll be a truck there or not if I am. Awesome. Try and go win back to back spring races at martinsville. It's always been a great place for myself. I've always run really well there and it's a place. I look forward to going every single year. Well, then how about Texas nexus it's another really fun place. Repave may to interesting, the last couple of ace's there for sure. We're in really well there in the fall last year. "Win. Yep. So that was awesome. And then, of course, the cokes hundred just fireworks on I long. So an awesome day of racing any fan that stayed up like I did. And I'm sure you did carry from the early parts of the morning. The late parts of the night treated to a pretty good show all day long. That was awesome, good motor sports day. I caught the last, I'd say thirty five laps of f one and then every lap after that for all the races. So it was good. Well, it's funny. So I woke up probably thirty minutes before the f one race started not. Because an alarm set or anything. In fact, I stayed up to like three AM the night before. We were hanging out with some friends things get late whatever. So went to three definite one race the morning. Well, I woke up at like seven thirty P and or thirty minutes for wherever the thirty minutes for the race was, I think it was seven or whatever, and I couldn't get actually says about cool wanna watch that phone, right? There you go. It was it was meant to be. Hey, we've got J, H, N, otherwise known as John hunter Nemechek on T, F, L, W, otherwise known as the final AP weekly. Yeah. Mike us at Facebook dot com slash the final lap. Like us today is John hundred Emma? Check welcome to the program. Thank you for having me. All right. You're out a new race team. Everything's new and shiny. And you gotta be pretty excited about the season. Yeah. Definitely. Am we've got off to decent start solid couple runs. We continue to improve our each and every weekend, I continue to improve his driver each and every weekend or communication just everything that comes with a new team, what I like in a race car, what our race cars like how they like to be driven kind of the balance from short run the long run. We're still trying to figure all that stuff out. So I have a great group around me. Firearm services more Gallagher. Everyone the racing team. They've given me the sport and everything that I need to succeed and we continue to improve every week and I think that's the biggest thing. And there's not one person that I would say is out working myself as a driver, our team as a team each never week that we're at the shop. Obviously, it's. Dependent. But how long does it take you guys to maybe get that chemistry with crew chief in the spotter? I'd say a week we didn't have that great of race in Atlanta. We went back and debriefed about it. And we went to Vegas last weekend and finish second. So we continue to improve our equipment each and every week continued to improve our communications standpoint, even though we've been talking all winter and kinda just trying to get to know each other get to know our cars. So I, I would say that the biggest thing for us is to continue the communication aspect and continue to build on it. How important was was back in Vegas team base there, you guys are probably busier than normal with all kinds of different obligations. That's got to put an extra spring intercept when you finish like that. Yeah, it definitely does to come off of a solid run. We still know that we need improvements. We're probably fifth this six place car last weekend for a period of time. And we ended up coming home with a second place finish. So and had a shot to contend for the win. So that's really all you can ask where you have to put yourself in position each and every week and you can continue to do that. The race wins are gonna come, but being Vegas being special racetrack and especial place for not only GM aspect for Allegiant airlines. We had them on board as well. So it was a huge opportunity in successful. You have a different sponsors all year long. You mentioned one of them fire alarm, sir. Ervices another one. What do they do? Safar. Learn services is based out of Denver, Colorado. They manage install service, all of the fire alarm services from sprinklers to security systems, pretty much anything commercial grade. It has to do with fire alarms. Video surveillance.

"And I know what you're saying. You're exac. Arrive. I'll tell you one of the key things that I did in Idaho see, many people doing it is I always pit in the front straightaway spot. Eleven, I think is the one that's called. It's a last opening in the front straightaway before you go in the turn on the pit area. I don't like being that turn. You can't see what's around there as you pull up. People can run over you. But when I was in that front straightaway, I won so many races, I think I want seven racist by pitting almost that same exact spot. Why did I get that spot? Because I qualified real well there and what every time I qualified. Well, I got a good choice of pit selection always wanted to be in the straightaway side glanced and mirrors pulling out, didn't get hit or I didn't run over anybody. I'm totally against being in the corners unless you're number one all the way down there unit pole-sitter if I was number two, I'd wanna be in spot number eleven with that opening in front of me where I can rocket in a rocket right out. How hard is it? To keep your cool at martinsville because I know there's always at one point in the race where someone gets beaten on you, you bang. And on yet you get into a pack of cars at wanna. Run you over. You're trying to keep the fenders on the thing and then a man can only get run into so many times for all of a sudden temper starting to go up. How hard is it to keep tempers in check Martin's beaten and banging is Connie expected. The thing that drove me crazy was a slower car that just kept blocking that was in front of you, and you know you're faster and you don't wanna run in a beat on him, but you want him to give you some respect. And maybe as you come on back stray, we Dr outlet, you get the inside lane, then he'll just kind of closed in right behind you when you get guys that won't do that, that just block it. That's when you get mad, that's when you start. Your temper starts flying. Then you give them the a little bit going at the corner are give them a little tap in the middle of straightaway. Fiene catch say, hey, man, I'm here. I've been putting up with this long enough to give me a little respect, but when they won't give respect, that's what got me hot. It wasn't going in the corner, getting a little nudge here, a little bump in Bangor because we know that the it's close quarters. We know that's going to happen one to know. Spec thing kicks in. That's when you get a have a problem. Now, when you look at the drivers that are going to be racing in martinsville this weekend, you've got guys like Kevin Harvick Kabua's, all of the Cup drivers that very talented that are seem to always find a way to the front of the drivers we have in that Cup garage right now, who has the temperament and who's got the skill to be a top guy at martinsville this weekend. I, I'm not saying this because it's my old car, but I look at Keselowski every time he goes there. He just flat flies around that racetrack he his upbringing on the short tracks. He knows how to get around there. He's good at that track. I'm going to say Brad, Keselowski, and then you know, then I'm going to step out of my comfort zone a little bit and go with some guys that are, you know, really respect to sport currently doing really, really well. And that kind of group in short-track also. And I'm going to say, Eric, Merola this guy, he's got a good car, a really good car. He's he's got a recent victory. He's got a little more pep in his step, and I think a guy like that can be one I could. I could mention that's rusty Wallace. He'll be in the Marin booth this weekend in martinsville for the first date of five hundred. And if rusty Wallace is the martinsville master that our next guest is the martinsville maestro track president clay Campbell joins us on the hotline..

"This is NASCAR live race fans are going the backstretch at martinsville rusty Wallace bottle time about the end of the backstretch as a karmic me the bandaged over the body, resting Wallace going back to lane martinsville two weeks. It will be three years. He at one that lasts victory coming in the California speedway. He goes back to victory lane today at martinsville speedway. Now back to Mike Bagley. That's how it sounded Sunday April eighteenth, two thousand four at martinsville speedway rusty Wallace winning his spinal race at the paper clip. We welcome you back to ask our live and well, we welcome the opportunity to chat with rusty Wallace every chance we get and I got that opportunity over the weekend. It Kansas had a chance to sit down and visit with rusty and talk about martinsville and spun dismember of racing. They're all it had to be my last win probably in two thousand and four. I mean, I was going for like seventy races without a win, but I thought if I could get a win, it probably be at martinsville. That's that's such a good track for me. So, yeah, they had to be the best one getting fifty fifth and final victory before hung my hat up. And that was an emotional day because I member standing up on the victory lane platform and all the drivers kept coming by. A lot of them came by congratulate because they knew that it was a long streak since one last time at home important that race was to me every track needs a different skill set. You know, you go someplace Daytona Talladega, India, certain mindset, what kind of a mindset do you need it martinsville to not get yourself in trouble to be there at the end when that checker Flagstar twin, what the way to keep yourself out of trouble. Mike at that particular race track is to have a really good handling car. Somebody's gotta stay on that chassis all the time. And I talk about that in nauseam almost because I was a chassis guy. I love those springs and shocks control my own destiny. Make car behave and handle the way wanted to in the short track. Their martinsville reminded me a lot of short treks every when I was coming up through the ring. WCHS one of his me Donnie Allison, Bobby, and some of those tracks Allen quickey all those type guys. Mark Martin we learned short tracks in martinsville kind of fit my style and I knew what I wanted my car to do at that particular racetrack. So I just stayed work in work in. So when you get your car handling good, then you can control the bricks. You don't burn the breaks up and you can put the car where you wanted on the racetrack. You don't have to take take all these daredevil moves that might get yourself in trouble might get yourself wrecked. So really good handling car solved a lot of problems. It just didn't make you overdrive and over. Thank everything. Well, one of the things that I hear you talk about in your progressive keys to the race is keeping your nose clean on pit road that martinsville it's obviously a small racetrack with that pit. Road speed is thirty five miles an hour. What's it like, whoa, in the thing down and getting on pit road and maintain thirty five miles an hour because from where we observe, it looks like you could get out walk faster than that cars Co..

"This is NASCAR live now back to Mike Bagley. Thank you so much for joining us on this week's NASCAR live as we head into martinsville speedway this weekend. One of the questions on everyone's mind in that garage is how to make a race car. Go fast over the weekend in Kansas are allocate had a chance to catch up with Ryan Newman's crew, chief Luke Lambert, and find out what that recipe consists of. You know, it's a, it's a lot like a short track that a lot of guys in sport grew up on a lot of the lot of the things that we have to focus on the course that we can keeping up with the race track keeping up with the rubber that's down the surface and that changes from the town that we get there and start. I practice until you get into the race, and it starts getting really black force, so we'll we'll be trying to keep up with that and trying to make a car that has really good long, run performance in keeps tires keeps tires on late neuron because you gotta run a lot of laps and that's where the that's where the money gets paid out as as having a car that can. In can fire off good with decent speed, but but really be good. Late late in the long run in late the month of October, running in the foothills of the mountains. Obviously the colder temperatures, concrete corners. What kind of challenges does that present? Yeah, you know the the temperatures of of the atmosphere when we're there is going to dictate kind of how the rubber gets laid down and that that will change the way the weekend goes for. So we'll, we'll be watching that as we approach this weekend and and seeing what we predict will happen. I during the race and that'll influence kind of decisions. We make going into the race. It is a condensed weekend, meaning practice, all on Saturday, qualifying race, all, basically come compacted there. Are you fan of that? And if so, what do you like about that and what are the pros and cons? It's the challenge. I'm excited for the for the new challenge that were there were looking at it does present some some opportunities force, but also some some, some different things that we need to consider. So I think that still comes down to having the right car for the race. Qualified is important there. But it's not as important as having long run speed you've, you've got to be able to have a car run late into run, keep the tires on it. We've had tire wear issues there, and a lot of times when it gets cold, get worse, didn't seem to be the case in the spring, but that'd be one thing that will be trying to stay on top, but the the format with impound and and not being able to work on the cars after qualifying will make us have to weigh our our decisions heavily towards racetrack and Alex joins us now on this car live after spending time with Luke, Alex, and talking about the condensed weekend, seems like that.

"What how long is it six years since you won so you'd be you forgot the lake shaking and all that stuff going on a last he the one car that was smoking or whatever i'm like you know it's just been so long we finished second so many times over the years that gosh you know he just can't help it to look over your shoulder thinking where's it coming from how are we going to lose this one you know and then all of a sudden you see that car smoking you like josh it goes and thankfully he made fit road and you know got off the racetrack but just it's incredible to that feeling the emotion that goes through you the focus you know and and everything you gotta you gotta keep that car roll and you can't lean on the steering wheel too hard burner front tires off of it you can't lean on the brakes few hard 'cause they start going away to get loose and he can't mash the pedal too much on on exit because you need that four grip on lap one hundred not this last you know five so this mansion all that my spotter bread did a great job of managing kyle behind us as we went through traffic and everything else seemed like he puts pressure on me there for ten laps or so and kinda realized he wasn't going to get it done and and brett picked up on that be backed off a little and try to save his stuff for the end of the run because it almost worked run before that now the two laughs and he'd had me past brett picked up on that helped me manage that situation and i saved my stuff just like he did then talking to the race fans and they bend in commenting about the dominating performance that you put in yesterday you let two hundred fifteen five hundred lamps you almost led half that race was it was the car is solid all day is it looked from our perspective the car was solid i'll weaken you know obviously wasn't the fastest and but our averages in the tools that we use the things that i use as far as how you stack up against competition i liked what i saw and gave me the confidence going into the race at that i knew we were we were going.
