"It's November, eighteen, sixty four and things aren't looking good for the confederacy. Abraham Lincoln is winning reelection. Ulysses s grant's campaign slash siege in Virginia, which we guide taste of today's opening continues and Union General William Tecumseh Sherman is just beginning a famous or infamous depending on your view March through Georgia. No question. Then the CSI needs serious win. But since the damage General John Bell Hood's Army of Tennessee is doing to rail union supply lines can't lure comp out of Georgia the confederate commanders come up with a Hail Mary play. Here's the plan one legged John Hood and his massive gloriously flowing beard will take his forty thousand man army, which is currently in Florence Alabama and headed Tennessee. They're the aggressive commander intends to fight his way through the state sixty thousand federals. Now. That sounds nuts in frankly likely is but there is some logic here. The boys in blue are divided into two fairly equal sized armies in two different middle Tennessee town's one is Nashville. The other is Pulaski and yes, it is named after the Polish revolutionary war hero we met in episode eleven Kashmir Polaski. Nashville is roughly seventy five miles north of Polaski. If John Hood can somehow keep these forces from uniting that, he'll have the numbers on his side in each engagement he can beat them then push north into neighboring. Kentucky. Once there he believes he can find another twenty thousand recruits. Then take his enlarged victorious Army East to help Robert Lee defeat US grant. It's a bowl play but to continue with sports analogies, they do say the best defense is a good offense sprite. Let's see how this campaign turns out. Joined by the Feared Cavalry Commander Nathan Bedford Forrest General John Hood and his army of Tennessee depart north from Florence Alabama on November twenty. First. The march furiously John Wants to get between the two union forces to make sure he can take them on one at a time. But Tennessee's federal general see this both by the way are men we've met previously up in Nashville we have the southerner whose family disowned him for his union loyalty General George Thomas He commands the army of the Cumberland. You might also recall his awesome nickname, the rock of chicken Maga, which he picked up back in episode sixty two. Dan Polaski we have General John. Scofield. He commands the Army of the Ohio in answers to George. Thomas both men led armies during episode sixty, five Atlanta camping. Both men are savvy enough to surmise that their confederate opponents will try to divide and conquer them and acting with such foresight John. Scofield moves his force forty miles north to the duck river near Columbia. It's a full on a race between the two opposing armies the boys in blue. March. Day and night. To their breakneck pace, be managed to reach the small town that was once home to James K Polk I the whole. Alas. Without time to visit his house turned museum. I'm kidding, of course, it is a museum yet. John Scofield's federal's take defensive position on the northern side of the duck river, which means the confederates still haven't managed to get between the Union army's. From November twenty fourth to twenty seventh there are small skirmishes but things heat up on the twenty ninth. In stonewall Jackson style John Hudson's Cavalry Commander Nathan Bedford Forrest on an eastern flank movement, a strike union troops farther up the turnpike that leads north to Franklin. If they can take this small village or more importantly the road they will effectively prevent these union forces from falling back farther north in reconnecting with George Thomas Zeman. The fight rages through the afternoon. Some. Federal. Lose Hope. At one point an officer sees one soldier retreating in a full sprint. Stop my man what are you running for? He yells out because I have no wings to fly with the still running soldier haulers right back. Thankfully for such terrified federal troops, John Scofield becomes aware of the flanking movement and since two divisions to help them hold the all important road. Doesn't sure an easy win though the battle springhill rages on as the autumn daylight gives way to the dark of night. John Hood has full confidence of a morning victory as he retires to his headquarters. But John Scofield has some tricks of his own. He takes his entire army marches north that very night. Moving along the turnpike the pass within sight of confederate camps. A few confederates notice them and make reports. But nothing is done. The whole. Union army passes them by as campfires crackle. When daybreak the next morning November thirtieth John Hood learns of what happened. Why slapped the flanking at Spring Hill was completely for not the union armies are only that much closer to uniting. Enraged at frustrated the one legged confederate general immediately his forces after John Scofield's. It's now early afternoon John Hood's men have spent the whole morning marching only to find their northern Fo- dug in Franklin twenty thousand Yankees wrap around the town's Western and southern sides below the harbour th-. River. They're all tucked in their earthworks, their artillery's prepped and ready to go. Considering. The Blue Coats high tailed it out of Columbia Spring. Hill just last night they couldn't be in a better defensive position. Generals Nathan Bedford Forrest and Benjamin Cheetham both tell John Hood in attack here is folly. But always he determined he sure that half his problem in this campaign has been the weakness of his men. They're soft. They need to toughen up and be real man and with that line of thinking John Hood insists that his army will attack. The men prepare for Battle Irish immigrant turn confederate General Patrick Clever whose fierce fighting we heard about an episode, sixty two reports these ready to the confederate commander. General I am ready and I have more hope in the final successive are caused than I have had at any time since the first gun was fired. God granted. John Hood Answers. With precious little daylight remaining the Graham butternut troops form lines around fourteen. The military band strikes up and they advance. Rifles cracked the fighting gets hot. The federals fall back they dash the half a mile to the next union line as the confederates yell shots and fire. Patrick. Cleverness Division is among those in the heat of his fight. He. Knows that if they don't break the Union line now thought a hell the time during the later. As he leads his men forward, his horses shot from underneath them. No. He another. Two is soon shot. Patrick now, advances on foot in the front sword held high encouraging his men and then. A bullet rips through the irish-born confederate generals chest. He falls dead than there..

"We'll just sleep over at the advocate center. John hood, joins us now Jonathan I was listening to your show yesterday for those who were not listening, your reaction to the Anthony Davis trade to the Lakers. I just think it's a it's a good deal for the Lakers because it makes them relevant for the first time in a long time. You know, when you keep in mind that Magic Johnson said there was a two year process, the first year with a lot of veterans and a lot of guys around the Brown, and I think that what you're to now you're looking at a Anthony Davis, a difference maker, if he stays healthy, along with LeBron James and how that's a great threesome. But I, I would say this, that it's since the Lakers or if the Lakers cannot add someone else free agency, like Kemba Walker or someone else along with that, it's, they're definitely in the mix in the Western Conference. I wouldn't found them as champions, as of yet because the one of the things that we know is that a championship team is not based on two guys not based on three guys. You know, you could use it to our raptors as an example of. Yes, it was about quite letter, but also others rebels kinda pull up the slack on that Toronto team. So I think that to me when that story broke on our show. Show yesterday. What that meant is that the Lakers are in the mix. Now they're relevant again. Because now you have to quality players along with coups by end on that team. So that's a good thing for Los Angeles. How do you think that this? I know you just said they're not instant title contenders. But as far as what else they can what else they can add. There might have thirty two million dollars left. Do you think that LeBron like he did with Miami? We'll be able to convince guys to take a little bit of a pay cut to chase rings. I think so. And in heures is the big question Mark here. We have to know by the time we get to July six will this be just the trade or will this be a trade, and then a long term view for Davis? If Davis signs, a contract here than, than we could see how the liquor don't have any more cap space, dad's someone else. That's a problem. So we have to keep our eyes on that if Davis signs a long term deal by the time this is a fischel that's going to close the door for anything else. And so I think that, that's one thing we've got to keep our eyes on with this. I, I, I think that the Lakers are going to be very good. At least they're going to be a playoff team. I just want to know what the what the next few is death gonna drop for this team. Jonathan joining Chris black Inam dollar here on ESPN one thousand and the ESPN app. Johnson, you know David Griffin you've hosted shows with him on siriusxm. You think he got nothing back for Anthony Davis in this deal? Yeah. Well, if, if what you were saying you try to get the most of the most possible, you know that you are trading top top ten player. And so on the other side of it you wanna be able to get something to go around, along guy on Williamson. I think Chris that the positive for the pelicans is, is that Zion Williamson gets drafted on Thursday, the number one pick. And now if if stead of a bunch of guys can't play, you have quality around him. I think Josh Hartzler terrific player. I think that I think that Ingram of big fan of Ingram women to the best them as of yet. And then the idea that we could see Lonzo ball and Zayn Williamson together at a one two punch. At least it's, it's something, and I know that we always look, things of the prism of well in this trade are the pelicans going to be in the championship team. I don't think it's about that. You're trying to make the best deal possible, and I think that the Celtics because they were unwilling to trade Jason Tatum. The Sixers were unwilling to. Anybody? This is the best deal that was on the table for Griffin. So I think that he has a playoff team. That is a seven feet eight seed in Zion. Williamson doesn't have all the pressure on him. Now there's other players around him. And I think that this can work. I think whipped at a really solid job. Plus the draft picks is three first round draft picks with those steel as well. So I, I think that, that was the best deal that gripped could do. And that's a good thing, at least at least it's, it's something versus just, you know, futures you've got quality players around I on. And that's a good thing for the first year players. I n Williamson Jonathan you and Chris will be hosting the draft coverage on Thursday night. Do you think the pelicans would be better off drafting someone at four or trading it for veteran player? I think they should trade it out on, I think they can't and computer something. And I know that we have to promote this draft show and talk about how great it is right? I actually becomes the it's an. NBA roast show. That's what it is. We're roasting teams are terrible. That's that's really what it is. I mean we call it the NBA draft show, but those teams like the Knicks and bulls and some of these teams have struggled. Yeah, we we're roasting those teams really. But, but this draft is a little thin. And this is why it's going to be a lot of jazz hands. A lot of soft shoe on the part of Chris, and trying to get to this draft show because it really is about three players. And then from there you look at Darius garland garland could be there at four. And I think that he's a nice player. But if you could flip that for a veteran and feel like that increases your chances and submits your chances of being a playoff team that you do that. I think all in good, but he's now on the level of the top three of Barrett of, of Mirant and Zion Williamson. And this is, I think if you see Adam that, that a flipped at four that tells you need to know about the draft Johnson hood talking with Chris Buckingham dollar here on ESPN one thousand so the both sit at. Seven what do you think the bulls will do and what's the best fit for the bulls at seven? It's what we talked about last year. I told you last year. Chris that whatever they do the draft pick. They had it'll be fine. It'll be a fine player. And I think that at seven if you're culverts there, I could see them getting Culver at seven Culver was able to get into the spotlight very quickly being in the final four last year. You're in Culver is a fun player for them. You know, here's the thing. Chris, you and I both know that the number one thing that the bulls really need to lead guard someone to be able to harness this offense. I think the John packs is never necessarily with Chris done, he'd rather have someone else in that spot. But again, you're looking for you're looking for best available chair Culver probably will be there at seven, you, six six, there's an NBA comparison to Nick Anderson when he played in Nick was very solid NBA player. So my focus really for the bulls is for them to stay healthy with the players, they have whatever they get here. They're hoping to have someone. That can help the roster but really ultimately, the focus should be on how the bulls can stay healthy. So we can really valuate whether or not, they have good players or not the questions to be, though, after the draft in with whatever limited money they have they sign a veteran presence, whether it's patching, Beverly, whoever it is, the question is going to be, John. Is it enough? I'm on that Patrick Beverley bandwagon, too, by the way. Kindle gill. We'll tell you that, you know, in many would like to the, the soap opera story of Derrick rose returning wasn't returning to was he coming back for right? I mean I could see Derek coming back like at the very, very end of his career. But I think if Patrick Beverley is there then I think that the bull in this is predicated on health. And I know that, that sounds obvious. But because they've been so hurt in so many injuries that they've had on this roster. Yeah. I think it's a, a team that should be a top eighteen. Now, I know that that's not what you're looking for. You know, you want a team to be able to compete with the, the Celtics and the Sixers and the, the NBA champion raptors. But yes, start somewhere. And I think that this roster, I said the other night, this roster is good enough to be a top team in the east. But if you're hurt, and you're always in suit up sidelines, you know despite the head coach you should be able to be a top team in this conference. So, you know. Yeah, I think it's enough, but if you're hurt the no. It's not enough. Thank you Jonathan. We appreciate it. I'll talk to you on Thursday. Okay topic before then. A long time away. I mean, we can talk just won't be broadcasted on air on AM one thousand as Chris black in Jeffrey Ross host the rest, the roast of the NBA. That's what it is just the rose fit wake. "It is the great Dionne Thomas, and he joins me John hood, here on ESPN one thousand and the SP, nap is always, we appreciate you coming on. Hey, don. Thanks for having me, man. It's a pleasure. Absolutely. The bulls will be picking at number seven in the draft as you. Well know I, I wanna get your your keen insight on some of these young players that maybe picked high in the draft, giving the example of one guy is on the six five combo guard from North Carolina Kobe white, when you when you saw him what did you what stood out most about Kobe white? Well, it's really is for me at the watching North Carolina play a lot this year. It how he willingness to take over the game. I mean, the kids showed no fear. I mean, and then you take that with his is at six five because he's definitely legit point guard, but he has a he's a jig point guard that can put the ball in the back. I think what he does will transfer mmediately to the NBA, the call the visibility shoot the ball in his ability to put the ball. But he's also shown that inner toughness that, I think you need as a rookie to be able to come in and be a another player that was on a big stage in the NCAA tournament was Jerry Culver from Texas Tech Asaf more. I've seen a lot of comparisons with him, Jerry Culver, I think that he's gonna make himself a nice living in the NBA, especially being able to carry Texas Tech to that level. No doubt, no doubt that I'll tell you. It's funny. You say that we will my wife and I were watching and Reggie Miller. And no knock on Reggie Miller. You know, ready made the comment and nobody has ever heard of this their covert? I'm like, this is this is why you have MTA guys college analysts talk about this, because I'm reading this is about the be a lottery. You know, because it's like you said, I mean he has a very quiet way about him, but he has an ability to do basically everything on the floor. But yet, he has not reached his his pitcher yet. I mean he will improve his jump shot. He will improve his ball, handling coming in at about six six six seven about two hundred pounds. So he's already physically ready for the game. And each still maturity, like you said, when Texas Tech was down. He he stood up and he put himself above the other guys on the floor while trying to pay help him play with his teammates. He were they would step up on the stage was able to come out and show what he can do enough, what you looking for when you have a player that's gonna be drafted high is the great time with me Jonathan hood on ESPN one thousand in the espionage, I saw this comparison, you might laugh comparison. I have all this draft information. In front of me, so jerk Culver is compared for some to Nick Anderson. You know what? I'm not gonna laugh at you because I could see that I can see why people would make that comparison I think make is a lot better athlete though. But you're covert, not a bad athlete, and by no stretch of the means. But you can look at their body. You can look at the mood miss in the way they played the game. I mean, I think Nick may be a little bit more college at the time, but I can see that comparison I wasn't that I kind of like that idea. Yeah. I've been reading a lot of these these different draft capsules, and that's it's an interesting parallel another player to coaches is Cam reddish. The six eight four from Duke projected to be a top ten pick, so maybe in the top eight could be around for the bulls eye. You know, I'll tell you I didn't see enough of Cam reddish to really have one strong opinion on what he is going to be this is one of those things where you wish you would be a sophomore have two years to for me to have a complete. Look at what he could be what, what are your thoughts on camera show, the next level I agree with you one hundred percent. I think Cam reddish has an opportunity to be top notch player in the late. But I didn't see it, you know, he was playing on the team with diet, and that, of course would RJ Barrett. And so he took it back seat to those guys. And when he needed to play well, there were times he play well, but there were times when they needed him to play well, that he wasn't fair. I don't think from a mental standpoint or a maturity standpoint he's there right now. But the way thing to working now in the NBA like you said, he'll be top ten pick without really cool thing himself in my opinion to be that top that pic, but that's just the way things work nowadays. So of course, he has to come out, but I would have loved to have been able to see him with another year. Under coach K do, but we're not gonna get that isn't going to be an NBA. I think he has a great Sanson, especially the come in, and learn behind someone that, you know, has a little bit of time. And with him possibly go to Chicago going to Atlanta, he may not have that opportunity. But if he was the end up falling to Washington or falling to even the Miami or somewhere like that, what he would have the mold of players on that team on the evening. Great if he could go to LA, but that's not gonna happen to be able to learn behi- someone what it really takes the being the league. I think it would be a lot better off. But I still think he has a tremendous upside. I just would've liked to see more maturity at the collegiate level all the numbers of their coach seven wingspan, and eight eight nine reach our and watching him. There's no doubt. Explosive athlete. Great first step. He's got all those things. Just the, the idea that we've had would never see him without Zion being there. Because that would have been the true sign of you got it can lead a ball club. You know, some of his intangibles, but, you know, we're gonna see what he looks like on the next level. I agree. It'd be interesting to see because he that. And that's why I mentioned those two guys. I mean you have you had our debate you can't and you had Williams and he naturally, you know, because I think of personality failed behind those guys and really a lot of the time for law because Diane was such aid, you know, big star superstar, just when he was dunk, and all of the things he just attracted so much attention. And then, of course, are bear was missed the consistency. So he's putting up twenty twenty five points, garlic who's on the floor. But that's the toughness that I'm talking about it would've been easy for RJ bear to say okay, well, you know what? This is I since he he's like, no, this is my team to. And that's the thing that I missed seeing with Cam radish that I hope he will be able to develop at that maybe, maybe not as I should, but definitely develop as he goes through his NBA career Thomas Jonathan hood on. On under the hood on ESPN one thousand and the SPN app. There's a story from a few days ago coach about John Mirant underwent surgery to remove loose bodies from his right knee on Monday is that is just nothing. Or do you think that maybe that could affect his draft status because everything has him going at number two after Zayn Williamson? You know, it's just a little clean of that. That's, that's definitely nothing that's going to bother him. And as you know, the NBA is going to be on that Bill cowed. The doctors will be able to really take a look at that as we saw him playing during this year. You know, didn't show each of no affects from his freshman year. No say this year is off more. I don't think that's anything that's gonna bother him whatsoever on on June twentieth. Yeah. June twentieth when they come out of the draft. Got a little barbershop conversation with you. Okay. So you got to come to the barber shop would be with this, this conversation. Love it. Let's do it. They okay so Zayn Williamson if he stays the pelicans, and again, every all signs, are that he will be drafted to the New Orleans pelicans, number one, what kind of one two punch? Would it be Zion is agrees to stay with the pelicans and Anthony Davis agrees to stay with the pelicans? Well, I, I guess they would. I, I look at it team you know, for my years of coaching building team, what you really need. My, my pain point guard has to be solid your two or three guy have to be solid, and then your four or five so you have to have those three positions. I believe that are that are solid. Where do you play Zion? We that's the question. Or is he a guy that's like a Charles Barkley that you just put out on the floor and he goes out place now? I think that's kind of where he'll fall in, but the, the difficulty of those two playing together it neither one of them is a great jump shot shooter. So now you're gonna have your defense is gonna be I mean, the other team will retry their defense that make you an offense of jump shot shooting team. And that's going slow them down. I would love to see them play together because I think with Anthony Davis skill level and his ability to. Move about ball. Get it where it needs to go. And as we seems I Williamson with do. Excuse me, this kid has no problem. Creating and making his teammates better around him. So I think they could play together. Now will they will be another question because I think Dave is now at this point in his career wants to win championships, a wants to have the possibility of winning championships, and he's not gonna do that in New Orleans for a while. Lastly, coach, I, I said this earlier on the show, and I still believe, in it, it is funny, the perception of the Golden State Warriors. We already know that they're champions. But here's my take on it is it is interesting how people will just say, well, you know, the Golden State Warriors shoot threes because they got Steph curry and Klay Thompson. If you really look inside the game of the Golden State Warriors out of all sixteen playoff teams. I think they were eighth or ninth as far as three point shooting percent is not about threes. You saw an entertainment parts with Biggs being involved with cousins and to be able to see what they were able to do. I thought that it showed a lot of resolve for them to have so many injuries. And then Knicks man up that is the embodiment of next man up mentality for them the win game two against Toronto the other night. Well, I agree with you and. Stacey but not this one in particular era of Golden State has broadened style the change in basketball. I mean, the whole idea of the position list style of basketball. Like you said, you had five interchangeable spot, your four men who in mind dream part of the time bringing the ball up and transition, you had the markets cousin bringing the ball up and transition, the other day. So they look like some people might laugh at, but they looked like a better European style basketball team. You don't have to spend fourteen years over there..

"So technically, these has elements of the war film, the Vietnam war films. The the buddy warmth war films of the fifties. Sixties and seventies. Which harks back a lot to what inspired George Lucas to make the original Star Wars movies. But Star Wars is January in itself Star Wars movie is a Star Wars movie, but they have tried to make a Star Wars movie in a warm movie. And I just think that's too much of a clash you need to either make Star Wars movie models doing that John removes they're they're trying to play around with various single character movies and make them ant man's crime sort of. Yeah. Heights. Whereas captain, America's wool, maybe at ninety get works in a franchise that is already itself genre. Like Star Wars space opera. I mean, no other spice upper films are there. To go through the process to become illegal citizen, and she had to have a sponsor. So that she could prove she wouldn't be a burden on the United States in all the years. She's been here. She's never accepted any kind of assistance from the government. I think this brings us to a second point about Representative Cortez's perspective on being American. I think it would be a smart move to limit or completely eliminate eligibility for illegals to receive any kind of benefits and also for even legal immigrants for the first several years. They're here to receive benefits to disincentivize people coming here solely for those benefits. That's genius, Tom. You're absolutely right. That the whole side there's a science of incentives, and when you create the incentives, reliigous migrants, guess what they will come. I love it. Do it properly and don't have the handouts there that will make people want to come. John is back John from Philadelphia. John online too. Yes. Hello, Dr Gorka. Can you hear me? I can you wanted to comment on a Casio Cortez saying we are with less than the illegals. What do you think about that John that that is driving right through the roof? You know, I hear that nonsense, and I'm going to get a little motionless because I was a I'm a navy veteran. I served from eighty three to eighty eight. I remember when the Iranians bombed the barracks. I seem guys I've seen guys that got killed. I worked on the flight deck. I got chopped in half. Propels blade and he's less. He's less American than than these people trying to come into the country illegally. I don't buy that that has stuck with me for more than thirty years and just hearing that makes life blood boil it drives me up the wall. And incidentally, my mom came from Ireland to this country in nineteen if she had to have a sponsor and she had to take a test, and I still have her citizenship papers. Wow. Wow. Treasure those John you're patriot. Thank you for your service. Stay on the line. We want you address. We're going to send you a signed copy of my new book why we fight defeating America's enemies with no apologies wonderful story. That's that's the real American story. Not a Casio Cortez's not demeaning those who were born here, not the meaning those who came here illegally. Who does she think she is who does she think she is to talk the way, she does when people do things correctly when people do things because they respect and love this country as opposed to quote, unquote, those refugees who come to our border and to what throw rocks throw buckles at the people who protect us as soon as you do that. You are no longer a refugee, you are.

"Are you angry? Jane, this is Jan. Oh, sorry. That was an auto, correct? That was the iphone. I'm sorry. John hood, your what's up, John? I I get so upset when Schumer uses the word tantrum to describe the way the president is behaving guiding a serious matter like the border and the issues that negatively affect almost every American and he says the president is having a tantrum. It's just to me. Okay. He's behaving like an obstinate brat. And so is. So is Pelosi now and shared Brown is easing this word tantrum. Now, also, he's parenting humor, and he'd better be careful because he he shouldn't be using that word to describe anyone's behavior since his angry behavior caused a person to have a court court restraining order issued against him. Just so, you know, Eric. Eric. But be beyond beyond how these people are behaving look at their body language, people need to go back and to look at the body language of Chuck Schumer when he was in the Oval Office with Nancy that couldn't care less. He wouldn't even look the president in the high. That's who we're dealing with. You're absolutely right. The just couldn't care less about this the seriousness of the issue at had. Thank you, John. Let's go to line four Jeff in Minnesota. You got a superb. I did Jeff. What's your idea? Well. Was you know, that they should name this whole wall project after officer. His family, and basically probably all of the other ones who've lost people some way to conglomerate that, you know, together. The other thing is is I'd say, you know, why do they keep kind of putting out information sometimes on FOX, and sometimes, you know, against martial law, which is seemingly the only way to get this wall built the hang hang onto dunk confused through things. Martial law knocker. We're talking about we're talking about a national emergency. That's a different thing when we're not talking about the military taking over the streets. That's that's that's that's never been mentioned. That's not what we do here. We're not under nuclear attack. So let's be careful. Let's be very precise. But I love your idea. Thank you. According to somehow memorialize, corporal sing who is who's emblematic as a legal immigrant of the threat we face as a man who was murdered by legal immigrant. I think that's a fabulous idea. "Then maybe biased boost back over there. Heck, maybe Russell moves back over there because he was a second baseman when he came up. So I think it's a fluid question because they play a month of baseball without him. I think the play on the field would determine his role more than what he does. Because let's face it. He will not have played baseball, you know, for a while there, and he'll have to earn his spot back. But I truly think he'll be moved before may I that's my opinion. Jesse?
