"Here, we are. This. Marks Catholic, Culture Audiobooks Fiftieth audiobook release. So who better to hear from than from our patron saint saint. John Henry Newman. And to celebrate this milestone accomplishment, but better topic than that of the danger of accomplishments. In this sermon, which comes from volume to of Newman's parochial and plain sermons, Newman is not so much talking about accomplishment in the sense of a particular achievement or success. But rather to be accomplished in the sense of being skilled or proficient. Better yet, clever or sophistications particularly with respect to the arts. And be sure accomplishment understood in this sense is no less relevant to the work of this podcast. We've always conceived of this project. In artistic terms. Indeed in this sermon Newman reserves particularly strong warning for stage players and orators, who as he observes, can grow accustomed to speaking noble thoughts without actually having to undertake noble action. It's this danger of separating feeling from acting which newman warns against. What not be sad that we simply entertained ourselves merely listening to or merely reading the fine sentiments expressed in the great works featured on this podcast. Rather, let us as Newman says apply all we read to ourselves from the Mir, sincerity and honesty of our desire to please God. Thank you for accompanying us on this episode. Journey through Great Catholic literature. and. He used to another fifty episodes more..

"Who does not see that they're festival was such as I have been describing it a holy tender reverend. Manley joy not so manly as to be rude not so tender as to be effeminate but as if an angels mood the mingled offering involved that is best and highest in men's and women's nature brought together. Saint Mary Magdalene and Saint. Peter blended into Saint John and here. Perhaps we learn a lesson from the deep silence which scripture observes concerning the blessed virgin after the resurrection as if she who was to pure and holy flower to be more than seen here on earth even during the season of her son's humiliation was altogether drawn by the angels within the veil on his resurrection and had her joy in paradise with Gabriel. Who had been the first to honor her. And with those elder saints who arose after the resurrection appeared in the Holy City and then vanished away. May We partake in such calm and heavenly joy and while we pray for it recollecting the wild. We are still on earth and our duties in this world. Let us never forget that while our love must be silent our faith must be vigorous and lively. Let us never forget that. In proportion as our love is rooted and grounded in the next world our faith must branch forth like a fruitful tree into this the calmer our the more active be our lives the more tranquil. We are the more busy. The more resigned. The more zealous the more unruffled the more fervent. This is one of the many paradoxes in the world's judgment of him which the Christian realizes in himself. Christ is risen. He is risen from the dead. We may well cry out. Ali Luhya the Lord Omnipotent rain if he has crushed all the power of the enemy under his feet he has gone upon the lion and the adder. He has stopped the lion's mouth for us his people and has bruised the serpent's head. There is nothing impossible to us. Now if we do but enter into the fullness of our privileges the wondrous power of our gifts the thing cannot be named in heaven or earth within the limits of. Truth and obedience which we cannot do through. Christ the partition cannot be named which may not be accorded to us for his namesake for we who have risen with him from grave stand in his might and are allowed to use his weapons. His infinite influence with the father is ours not always to use for perhaps in this or that effort we make or partition. We prefer it would not be good for us but so far hours so fully ours that when we ask in do things according to his will we are really possessed of a power with God and do prevail so that little as we may know when and when not we are continually possessed of heavenly weapons we are continually touching the springs of the most wonderful. Providence is in heaven and earth and by the name and the sign and the blood of the son of God we are able to make devils tremble and saints. Rejoice such are the arms which faith uses small an appearance yet not carnal but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds despised by the world would seem Zamir word were Amir symbol or mere bread and wine but God has chosen the week things of the world to confound the mighty and foolish things of the world to confound the wise and as all things spring from small beginnings from seeds in elements invisible or insignificant so when God would renew the race of man and reverse the course of human life and earthly affairs. He chose cheap things for the rudiments of his work. And Bats believe that he could work through them and he would do so as then we Christians discern in him when he came on earth not the carpenter's but the eternal word. Garnett as we see beauty and him in whom the world saw no form or come linus as we discern in that death and atonement for sin in which the world saw nothing but malefactors sentence so let us believe with full persuasion that all that he has bequeathed to us has power from him. Let us accept his ordinances and his creed and his precepts let us stand upright with undaunted faith resolute with faces like flint to serve him in and through them to inflict them upon the world without misgiving without wavering without anxiety being sure that he who saved us from. Hell through a body of flesh which the world insulted tortured and triumphed over much. More can now apply the benefits of his passion through ordinances which the world has lacerated and now mocks this then my brethren be our spirit on this day. God rested from his labors on the seventh day yet he worked with ever more Christ entered into his rest. It he to ever works we too. If it may be said in adoring and lowly imitation of what is infinite while we rest in. Christ and rejoice in his shadow. Let us to beware of Sloth and cowardice but serve him with steadfast is yet active hands that we may be truly his in our hearts as we were made his by baptism as we are made his continually by the recurring celebration of his purifying fasts and holy feasts.

"Happy Easter everyone. With today's reading round out the trilogy of Newman readings that we began on palm. Sunday continued through Good Friday and now conclude for Easter. It's taken us a bit longer than anticipated publish. Today's episode originally slated for release within the octave of Easter. My wife and I welcomed our first child on Easter Monday. Nearly a week ahead of schedule so needless to say this. Easter has been especially joyful for our family if not also especially chaotic in any case. Hopefully the brief delay has given you the chance to listen to our Good Friday episode the mental sufferings of our Lord in his passion. It's one of Newman's most beloved and moving meditations and perhaps my favourite of his to be featured on this podcast so far so be sure not to miss it. Today's reading comes from Newman's parochial and plain sermons volume four and was originally preached on Easter Day. The selection of text was made well before the extent of the current public. Health crisis was made fully apparent. But I think you'll find Newman's reflections to be very continent with the more muted celebration of Easter taking place this year in the Reading Newman Lichens eastern joy to that of sick people in convalescence. A particularly charged metaphor today. He speaks also of the UNASSUMING but undeniable power the churches precepts and ordinances another theme especially worth reflecting on when in so many places throughout the world. Public liturgies have been suspended. All in all. There's much here to help us begin this Easter season so once more from all of us Catholic Culture Happy Easter.

Bloom needs to find himself a new skin. There's no question it's an unusual time to be a doing a managerial search at the point in the winter that we are being this close to spring training it's impossible for that. Knock to be a factor. He's got some work to do same for the Astros though. It seems they have some in house candidates to replace. That's not within the rules of the game with the Astros investigation complete in the punishment handed down. Should they have been forced to vacate the world series title. "All because we have neglected those religious observances through the a year which the Church commands which we are bound to observe while by neglecting them. We have provided a sort of argument for those who have wished to do them away altogether. No party of men can keep together without stated meetings assembly. Things are we know the very life of political associations viewing being then the institutions of the church merely in a human point of view. How can we possess power as Christians if we do not and on the other hand? What great power we I should have if we did flock to the ordinances of religion present a bold face to the world and show that Christ has still servants true to him that we come to church on? Sundays is a help. This way doubtless but it would be a vastly more powerful evidence of our earnestness for the truth if we testified defied for Christ at some worldly inconvenience to ourselves which would be the case with some of us on other holy days. Can we devise a more powerful mode of preaching to minute. Large judge and one in which the most unlearn most timid among US might more easily partake of preaching Christ as a warning and remembrance. Then if all who loved the Lord Jesus Christ priced insincerity made it a practice to throng the churches on the Weekday festivals and various holy seasons allowing less religious persons the wild to make the miserable gains which greater keenness in the pursuit of this world. Certainly does secure. I have not yet mentioned the peculiar benefit to be derived from the observance of Saint's days which obviously Veasley lies in their setting before the mind patterns of excellence for us to follow in directing us to these. The church does but fulfill the design of scripture. Consider how great a part of the Bible is historical and how much of the history is merely the lives of those men who were gods instruments in their respective ages. Some of them are no patterns for us. Others show marks of the corruption under which human nature universally lies yet the chief of them are specimens of of especial faith and sanctity and are set before us with the evident intention of exciting and guiding us in our religions course such are above others was Abraham Joseph Job Moses Joshua Samuel David Elijah Jeremiah Daniel and the alike and in the New Testament the apostles and evangelists first of all and in his own incommunicable glory our blessed Lord himself give us an example but his faithful servants lead us on towards him and confirm and diversify his pattern. Now it has been the aim of our church church in her saint's days to maintain the principal and set a pattern of this peculiarly scriptural teaching and we at the present day have particular need gene. The discipline of such commemorations saint's days to recall us to ourselves. It is a fault of these times for. We have nothing to do with the faults of other times to despise despise the past in comparison of the present we can scarce open any of the lighter or popular publications of the day without falling upon some panegyric on ourselves house on the illumination and humanity of the age or upon some disparaging remarks on the wisdom and virtues of former times now it is a most salutary thing under this temptation to self conceit to be reminded that in all the highest qualifications of human excellence. We have been far out done by men who lived moved centuries ago that a standard of truth and holiness was then set up which we are not likely to reach and that as for thinking to become wiser and better or more more acceptable to God than they were. It is a mere dream here. We are taught the true value and relative importance of the various gifts of the mind the showy talents in which the present age prides itself fade away before the true metal of prophets and apostles. It's boasted knowledge is but at a shadow of power before the vigorous strength of heart which they displayed who had calmly work moral miracles as well as speak with the lips of inspired wisdom. Would that Saint Paul or Saint John could rise from the dead. How would the minute philosophers who now consider intellect and enlightened virtue all their own shrink into who nothing before those well tempered sharp edged weapons of the Lord are not we come to this? Is it not our shame. As a nation that if if not the apostles themselves at least the ecclesiastical system they devised and the order the founded are viewed with coldness and disrespect. How few who are there? Who Look with reverend interest upon the bishops of the Church as the successors of the apostles honoring them if they honor merely because they like them as individuals and not from any thought of the peculiar sacredness of their office? Well let it be. The end must one time come. It cannot be that things should standstill. Thus Christ's church is indestructible and lasting loan through all the vicissitudes of this world. She must rise again and flourish. When the poor creatures of a day who opposed her have crumbled into dust? No weapon that is formed against her shall prosper. birther rejoice not against me O.. Mine enemy when I fall I shall arise when I light right unto me in the meantime let us not forget our duty which is after the example of saints to take up our cross immediately and pray for our enemies these are thoughts suitably impressed on us on ending as we do now the yearly festivals of if the Church every year brings wonders we know not any year what wonders shall have happened before the circle of festivals has run out again from Saint Andrews to all saints. Our duty then is to wait. For the Lord's coming to prepare his way before him to pray that when he comes uh-huh we may be found watching to pray for our country for King and all in authority under him that God would vouchsafed to enlighten the understandings and change change the hearts of men in power and make them act in his faith and fear for all orders and conditions of men and especially for that branch of his church which he has planted here. Let us not forget in our lawful and fitting horror at evil men that they have souls and that they know not what they do when they oppose does the truth. Let us not forget that we are sons of sinful Adam as well as they and have had advantages to aid our faith and obedience above other other men. Let us not forget that as we are called to be saints so we are by that very calling cold to suffer and if we suffer must not think it strange concerning the fiery trial that is to try US nor be puffed up by our privilege of suffering nor or bring suffering needlessly upon us nor be eager to make out we have suffered for Christ when we have but suffered for our faults on not at all may God give us grace to act upon these rules as well as to adopt and admire them and to say nothing for saying sake but to do much and say little this has been use of saint's days founding parochial and plain sermons.

Part 3: Jeff Siegel, Ed DeRosa, James Scully

"Jeff Good Morning Good morning how you doing excellent and lots to digest. We've already talked to the J ribbon earlier this morning morning. I want to get your take on what went on about the racist we discussed last week including the the upset which I think is less shocking talking than people. The people are are feeling. It didn't seem upon further review that Mongolian groom was all that impossible well. He wants to me I mean I thought he'd run well but I I really I'd watch McKinsey working. I thought he was ready to roll. Oh and just looking at the form I thought that he would win and he he moved to the top of the stretch like he was going to pounce and then he kind of flat out and I I always had a little sense of doubt that maybe he wasn't quite amount of quarterhorse but this is only a mile and they and I was disappointed and I think Bob Baffert with two do I really was an he's made in announcement that he's going to replace my Smith with a writer that we don't know who's going to be. I'm sure all the the agents are kind of hanging around trying to throw their hat in the ring but yeah I mean I it was I mean it's it's just it's the nature of the game here. We've you see this happen a lot and perhaps the real the real important racist coming up a month from now but if you've you know food for thought as to whether or not the horse that we also at least I thought was the number one older horse in the country. is really that much better than everybody else and amount of quarter. I think it's anybody's game now fold in as well the the result at the Jockey Club Gold Cup and what did you think of the takedown and who do you favor of the two of them coming out west well. I'll tell you what that I I was kind of hoping that it didn't come down and even I thought the three year old is going to win the race going in and what am I ran well. I thought he I thought he had every chance to get by but it was a tough. It's tough to lose a race lightweight like way when push came to shove and unfortunately for her also did come to push he he hung in there I think both both of those are deserving the universal. I'd come already come out west a winner racer over the summer so we subtract and so they'll meet again it's I I. I was talking about this. The other day was Zoe on our podcast and we we were pretty much not baffled. I don't think that's the way but kind of open to in trying to figure out who might win the plastic doors so many possibilities now so many horses that look like they're capable title stepping up some of them that look good or maybe vulnerable so I duNNo. We'll be watching the next couple of three weeks to see who trains the best. Maybe maybe we can come up with a conclusion but right now now. It's really a mess we'll wait till they get the decisions. The final decisions horses like a late and late would add another wrinkle visit I think they're thinking mile and a quarter and the boys aren't that top much tougher for maybe the midnight DC would be if he ran against her again and and a mile an eighth in the in the the staff so that would that would certainly make an interesting well a couple of other thoughts jeff about last weekend the reasons we discussed filled D'Amato just a of magical a couple of days pee wee reese on Friday mirth and Cleopatra Strike in the Rodeo drive and the John Henry able to Geo Story. I keep coming back to it because what can you say and then Sunday Paradise Woods and I ask you the same question that I brought up up with Jay and I asked Sadler too Sadler Sheriff's the other day if she runs that race of the distaff she's she's a major major player and I know she's a notorious in and outer but I thought that was a terrific effort it was it was accomplished under under pristine conditions sitting right outside a speed horse with nobody all rounder nobody in front of her nobody beside her with kind of like a workout for but she did feel the deal as she finished strongly and she earned a beyer speed figure that was something like eight or nine points better than they were not that that means anything but bottom line is she ran really well now whether or not she can do that again I don't know if he pointed out not exactly your model of consistency and I thought maybe your best days were behind her but boy did she work well and I I I yeah I mean you have to go. You have to think that going into the dispatch. This definitely has a legitimate chance I mean if she decides to show up with a game the thing that we're going to start talking about Jeff when when when I'm at clockers corner and and we're watching horses work and when we analyzed the the XP TV workouts leading up to the race between you and Millie Ah Zoe is going to be fitness levels and the one thing you're not going to have to worry about John. The sheriff's Baffert and Sadler is is fitness of these horses on that racetrack and that's going to be a huge factor and I'm I'M GONNA keep referring to the east coast horses that went to del Elmar for the Pacific Classic and God drowned on that deep surface and Steve Asmussen asked me to his credit with with tenfold he learned his lesson and went out early with Mottola because he is not gonna get caught on that element he wants his horses. This is ready to travel over that surface and it's going to be something we we really focus on and then I'm sure in the recap you know after breeders Peter Scott. It's GONNA come up well down. Mars is eat but it's it's not it's not any deeper than in Santa Anita where this is not the old Santa Anita track backwards you know three quarters in eight and change all all day long I mean you have to be did fit to run on. This track is deep. You just tiring you you have to train over it. I think I think it really helps and yeah I think it's going to be very important to to to watch the works and I I do think it's going to be a great advantage for horses to get in early and get a beast of one or maybe even to work over the drag your possible because it's it's not it's it's tough. It's it's it. It's deeper than New York and Belmont Park is I'm convinced of that and I know Belmont to be called the fanny and all that but this track is is big heavy. I mean it's the faith it's safe and that's why they made it so deep but you've gotta get through it and you gotTa. That'd be fit well. Let's get set to look at the weekend and before we talk about Saturday any any day maker ideas for today well. You know it's yeah I mean I I did do a couple of San Anita and I can give the a little bit of an insight today's tough but I like the Philly name swirling in the fourth race she's not the favorite averaged five to two zero six two five in there she's a late running turf sprinter that that I that likes attending through force and they're starting to run five and a half now in the first we've got a couple now they extended the shootout there so she'd found five furlongs on this course a little stripe and she was hitting the boy and running well but just running out of room now she goes five and a half and I noticed in the few couple of five and a half long since we've had so far that the closers have a better chance and she's she's good enough to win. and I think that extra half for a long we'll give her the edge that she needs so I'm looking at number two swirling in the fourth race to kind of heightened me over for that's my play play today. It's an okay car not a great guard but I think we can we can get some value there because she's not going to be the favorite it's excellent all right swirling today and Let's let's go to the weekend and obviously the steak the steak side of things Let's talk about talk about the city of hope I because it it it really is intriguing and I brought up with Jay earlier. Jeff the mixing and matching of older horses. I mean really veteran in six seven eight year olds like synchrony and Ohio and Bolo and catapult facing off against some horses that may be emerging What's your angle in the studio? It's really hard. I handicap this this race and I came up with about four or five that on their best day could win. synchrony is intriguing to me I think he's intrinsically the best of the group but he doesn't have a lot of tactical speed and going a mile on this course even though he's running the tool aww theoretically he could maybe draft into the mid part of the mid packing and save the nangle out and get through he tends to give himself a lot to do and I remember when he came out here for the CBS del Mar last November. The same thing happened. Do that was sixteen. He fell back. He he had some traffic trouble he got. That's where we finished. Fuller Ronnie finished thirty one but but he didn't get there so I I like him at five to one at synchrony shipper I I hope he gets the trip. If he doesn't then you can make a case for a number of these. I mean looking for fifteen to one shot number four on your program. Aziz restrained vengeance. He's GonNa get loose in the lead and if he does that he can be dangerous. TAT upholds training really well but he's form doesn't look all that well you gotta go back to the Kilroy Mile Back in March the finding good but at least it was over this turf fourth and he could pop up Sadler. He's five to one the raises a bunch of the race basically is is a bunch. That's a five to one shots hoping for good luck but I think maybe if he gets through synchrony can win I wanted to I wanted to like River Boyne off the lay off and then John White made him four to one and that that cooled my ardor well you know I looked at him him and he was a very good three year old and he hasn't won at four and haven't made a lot of progress at least according to his numbers and he goes from practice and I'm looking elsewhere. Let's put it that way you know a to go back to an angle from last week as that in fact Jay also came up with and Dash the other filled D'Amato player and here's able to do who the things that just seem to be running for Jeff at at least from what we saw last week while they they ran for a golden gate when he was leading rider up there and I talked to them for a number of years actually we had horses up there and he he wrote for us always felt that he was good enough but he was kingpin up there era and then he decided to make the leap and I thought it might be tough for them but it really hasn't he's really falling favor with the with the horsemen down here and he's a strong writer but he's a good rider as far as and dishes concern. He's coming off a nice win. Del Mar.. He's obviously never beaten this this group although he did run second Mendelssohn and his racing debut of that matters which it doesn't that was way back in two thousand seventeen at the Curragh but but he's he's he's developing. He's he's coming around and the way the model is going. I mean I wouldn't put anything past him and especially in a race like this in which really there is no standout and anything can happen so hey why not wanting to watch a couple of other thoughts. what do you make of this chance Salat Omaha beach matchup the very very different set of three year olds against elders in the in the sprint championship wells twelve sheds lots four to five in the morning line because he's not only the fastest horse in the race in terms of numbers but he's also look controlling speed and he doesn't even have to go that fast my my concern was and it's kind of happened in the Jerkins a little bit then I know that the inside part of the wasn't particularly hit that day but they kinda slowdown down twenty three flat forty five and and he's fast horse and I think you gotta use his weapon and I think going three quarters. They don't have to worry too much about you. Know saving reading anything so I I would suspect he'll bust out there and go. He had a nice breeze over the track. I think Navarro did the right thing by bringing them out early and breezy had a half and forty. He's seven and one third fastest at sixty five last week and he lied did it. The right way looked like he was relaxed like he got over the track very very well so he's going to be it really hard for Omaha Beach the rundown although I my theory about Omaha beach is that he's always wanted to be a sprinter and because he was so good and all the money's going long long that Richard Mandella kept running them wrong and why wouldn't he won the rebel in the Arkansas Derby any may have even able to win the Kentucky Derby had come down with the trap Levada brought his only sprint race of his career only race of seven that he actually sprinted

"I dunno okay so let's move onto dueling john henry movies first of all. Did you guys know anything about john henry. I'll i'll just say for me. The only exposure i had to this folk hero was from the i think it was a nineteen ninety-five five movie called tall tale patrick swayze played pecos bill like paul bunyan and and john henry and these other folk heroes like teamed teamed up to help this kid save his homestead or something like that <hes> but do you have any any exposure to the john henry lower at all. I remember i think learning reading whatever you about it when i was in like elementary school probably but beyond that my my experience also comes from that same movie. Did you ever see that movie or do. You know anything about john henry. I don't i think a little bit after that movie that you're talking about because because i have no idea what you're talking about so in in folklore john henry was this like blue collar worker who was super super strong a an african american folk hero who who was so strong that he agreed to race a steam powered rock drilling machine and a contest by just basically using his bare hands or maybe you like a hammer or something and this machine was using steam and all this new technology and the the goal was to basically smashed their way through a mountainside like secrete a tunnel or something and he ended up winning but he died because his heart gave gave outright as the competition ended so i guess it's like a sort of a metaphor four of of you know down home like grit and determination verses like encroaching technology and stuff like that so anyway <hes> there are two you john henry movies in the works. I think we may have mentioned one starring dwayne johnson because we learned about this <hes> last october. Dwayne johnson is going to be starring in john. Henry movie called called john henry and the statesman which that name sort of has like a like an avengers kind of name to it or like this is a franchise and i don't know if any other characters are going to be involved in that. It's still too far out for us to know but we know that jake kasdan the guy who directed jumanji welcome to the jungle is going to be directing him in that movie and it's going to be for netflix..

Disney+ Will Reboot Four Fox Movie Franchises

"Us about disney's plans to boot several popular fox properties so disney snitch chief robert iger announced on an earnings call with investors that the studios developing several reboots and reimagining of fox's family friendly hits including being titles like home alone ninth museum dairy of wimpy kid and cheaper by the dozen and these reboots would be debuting on disney plus according to a new report from collider rider so these are fox's most recent <hes> family friendly hits apart from cheaper by the dozen which is actually slee remake in a ended of itself so and it seems like disney plus is building its titles original content to be largely reboots reboots in a sense <hes> and <hes> recognizable i._p. In addition to this there are also seeing some disney live action makes his animated films like lady and the tramp as as well as just the marvel and star wars titles but <hes> that seems to be the strategy that disney plus is going forward in the coming streaming wars. I mean that's kind kind of depressing isn't it that that disney acquired fox just to sort of push off some of these like remix fox properties onto disney plus yep <hes> they can't just have these <hes> these classics on their <hes> streaming platform as in the archives to slap the disney brand and on it and put a little twist up apparently <hes> the home alone reimagining for example would <hes> put a twist on the story and make it without a husband and wife could go to with a young boy who has stolen something from them so that's something along the lines of what will likely be seeing with these remakes interest. It's not even home alone yeah. What what a bizarre. That's like a yeah. It's a totally different concept. They could just make you know original movies themselves but you know you gotta have that i._p. I guess 'cause that's disney strategy and they're making a lot of money from it hub so brad. I was going to throw to you and say. Is there any hope that these projects addicts could be you know maybe better than we think and maybe not quite as crass as we're making them out to be but that particular <hes> synopsis or description of what they're planning to do with home alone get makes me even more worried than i was. You know thirty seconds ago do you do you even with that in mind do you. I think that there's any chance that these are going to be like worth seeking out or do you think it's just mining these properties for name recognition alone. I mean there's always a chance when it comes to stuff like this. I i've tried to be a little more understanding and less judgmental <hes> when it comes to remakes re boots. There have been some really good remake reboots. There've been some really bad remakes in reboots and so there's always a chance that they could figure something out. <hes> disney does have a lot of talented people working for for them and a lot of people who want to work for them so it wouldn't have their own possibility for you know some of these movies to work. I just wish that they would you know invest their time in making the things that really haven't been done yet or at least adapting more interesting stories that come from other you know media i see this slate the titles and i can't help but get frustrated that they scrapped the mouse guard adaptation which looked fantastic <hes> all in favor of doing you know more remakes like this so that is frustrating rating but i kind of just a wait and see scenario for me. I i don't know what to expect from the quality of these movies that will go into disney plus but i guess i'll will be hoping for the best a._t. Do we know any other like notable information about any of these particular projects or is it still too early to talk about casting and stuff like that. It's still a little too early <hes> home alone remake is a reboot is the one that we have the most information on apparently a brat scribe. Dan mazer is being i to direct the film while melissa mccarthy is reportedly being to star in it as one of the parents so so but other than that we don't know if that's settled yet

"Who here is working on a side hustle up leave your hand up if you WanNa turn that side-hustle until fulltime also leave your hand up at you think that your obstacles money okay what's your obstacle if it's not money what is it marketing has one what is it and you okay the reason I did that is because I think this is a special room in many aces I think people are tempted to believe that obstacles money and I was going to dive in and explore how that's rarely obstacle really when you start Ed Himself Marketing Best Practices Focus is excellent answers I think that when you're starting for all those who had their hands up it's a side hustle that's the biggest blessing that you have right now the fact that it's a side hustle means that you have limited time doing it on the side time is fishing time you'll be surprised once you start doing it full time when your time opened up you start not knowing what to do and you get lost in the time and that's all you've been praying for all you've been you don't have to quit your day job to quit your leisure right so if you work on that eventually it will cost you more money to stay your job than industrial leader job until you get to that point you're not ready so when I was working as a doorman I was going school mind you again I was working grave shift I was then leaving my job at seven. AM and starting school at nine straight from the job swelling terrible going to school studying and then after we leave that then go and try and hustle you figure dry-cleaned like that's legit right and as I started getting more and more customers eventually the balanced starts to shift and I started noticing wow like I can't be in school because that order Seville and so one day I'm in business law class and I'm cutting a contract with my mentor in real life and I'm sitting in the classroom and the ladies teaching me about how to cut a con back and I thought why am I going to be in this classroom when I have a real life example and it hit me and I packed up my thing teach I'm out and that was my last day the next time I was in school is being paid to teach people how to be successful business but that is how you nurture the side how so you put the time in astle eventually you're going to start noticing your priorities shift over into the full-time.

"Ah I like your smallest and look what do you do for work that's just work on you and eventually look here's my card if you ever need to dry cleaning done I'll handle it eventually you'd be like kind of like this reports while I want to do this thing full-time we start doing full time you'll I don't know what the hell to do with all this time so you're time right now that is your you put the time in you put the reps in Riley you can't build a six pack unless you do sit ups right you gotta put its businesses similar muscle flex that muscle build the side.

"So they were too hard like we can't squander this opportunity so with that I came back to the city I worked a job as a doorman and that's where I say opening up doors for people help open up doors for me I was I did that job with a lot of died why because my parents there is a lot of pride and so what excuse do I have and it was through that kind of attitude that I got exposed to a resident whom you know Hugo Sanchez and that resident who was Puerto Rican guy look guys when I saw someone who had more than me I always made an excuse as to why that can be me and I would always dig around for like I didn't go to school and you know so if someone would say hey I'm doing this I'm doing they're successful I would say that you're going to school and then it's gone that's why some people would say hey I'm now director I'm now an author of this and that and I would say oh but my mom paid my way through this or my way and so slowly but surely when you come from a very disadvantaged perspective and experience you start seeing that none of the examples that are before us are truly relatable and you start becoming disillusioned at least I did man I feel like I know I can get like my mom tells me that but cannot really and it wasn't until I met an individual who had come from way more disadvantaged circumstance than I did who Serb timed everything came out and you know and became a self made millionaire and he said boy he said what are you doing behind the desk being doorman you need put the work in so you can have your own there is no excuse and he was the one who presented me with my first business opportunity and that's how I started similar to my path Johnny Graduate College while fortunate enough to attend for a semester John Left to begin his first business in dry cleaning he sold that business by the time he was twenty one but there was some time before John can build the courage and the motivation to actually such a powerful move in his life the school is not for me because I'm the kind of guy at work I was always trying to innovate the experience of the building you know and my managers are like this kid you know it was always like way why can't we greet the residents with an ipad why can't we wear different colored suits and the answers were always super her constricted people just like following the rules the rules are not there to like who cares about the rules if you have an idea that you come up with in your head as to how you can improve the situation and I felt constricted in school constricted at work and when Hugo came along this resident in the building he showed me were entrepreneurship was he said John Did you know that there's a reality out there in which you can carve your own path on hundred percent and I sat with that and I said no I didn't know that was I mean I mean my mom's old super soldiers in the part there in the summers right like I come from a family of merchants being a merchant from immigrant communities a little bit different than being entrepreneur same essence but it's a little bit different turn to execution and so anyway he would give me little projects I used to work the overnight shift man how many of you guys have heard of that Kanye West Song been we're in this gray and now you may wish So that was how I felt like hand I'm working the overnight shift so he would give me a little project here and there I was doing them we started building a rapport and by the way that's how you get you're don't Dm me asking about can you be my mentor just don't do it like that's not how you get a mentor the way you get a mentor is reach out to someone you say hey here's what I'm dealing with like I admire your path I respect your your perspective here's what I'm dealing with when that person shares a bit of advice execute against it and then you say you come back the next week and you say hey I've done what you said here's where I'm at now and that person's all of a sudden it's caught off guard and they another thing and it's in that back and forth that's how you build a mentorship beautiful relationship where a teacher student thing so anyway eventually Hugo said hey look I have a facility of big dry cleaning facility that was his business he had a franchise at drycleaners yet thirty four dragon ears and he said Hey look I'm gonNA give you access to my facility which is very expensive because you know it's millions of dollars worth of equipment a lot of stuff he said I'm GonNa let you clean clothes here for dirt cheap you just convince someone to give you their clothes you bring into me out clean it on the cheap you charge the market rate the spread so this Blazer on-ice laser would cost you seven dollars we go to a guy like you and say hey how are you my name's John Henry can you give me a call I bring it to Hugo two dollars charge you seven I make five dollars spread eventually I was like damn five dollars sounds like you know not a lot but if I'm doing one hundred pieces as bread and no matter how much sons I opened the door and how many times I smile I'm not GonNa make more than arose making so now starting to understand this is what entrepreneurship is and by the way when I started I didn't know what venture capital was this and that I just knew you put in the work like input equals output that's what entrepeneurship knees and so I went on that eventually I got introduced to the film the TV industry and I worked my way into this industry I started doing the dry cleaning for the wolf of Wall Street Walk Empire Law and order actor it's yeah then that's when it began to flourish.

Dot Org in this is leaders create leaders and I'm your host Gerard Addi- This is a podcast showcase in two days change makers who dedicate the associate creating the best tomorrow possible with vision with Hustle and showing up world class they offer advice they offer lessons most important they offer you their mentorship because leaders create leaders and leaders are the ones that are impacting our world it goes without saying that being a strong entrepreneur requires a nasty and focus hustling to achieve your dream is not an easy process but over time senior hardworking goal setting come to light is the ultimate payoff on leaders create leaders we've found a few voices whose journeys not only delivered into their goals but has taken them to new heights impacting the next generation I am excited about this so we're about to go and meet up with John Hen who leverages his voice to invest in community as a mentor and Teacher I mean he started his first company at the age of eighteen and within two years he grew that business from zero to seven figures and successfully sold it by the age of twenty one he's also the founder of coal found harley the first tech incubator north of Ninety Sixth Street and a partner in Harlem capital partners whose goal is to change the face of entrepreneurship by investing in one thousand divers founders over the next twenty years as we sat down with John we're able to glimpse with a self made entrepreneur in a different sense than what we've experienced in our previous episode looks like John Henry's Specter his background has become his entrepreneurial strength a leverage talent for authenticity which precedes execution give a warm welcome to the one and only John Henry yeah so I guess we'll kick off for those that don't know who is John Henry maybe go into like your background and how you got into entrepreneurs yeah definitely so I first and foremost and the very proud son of immigrant parents that is the most defining part of me a journey because that whole facet of my experience has shaped the way that I look at things shape the way that I approach things and my mom and dad come from Dominican Republic and we grew up uptown Manhattan heights and you know we grew up like up most people grow up uptown there's six of us in a one bedroom apartment and we grow really broke but we grew really bright you know like the the family dynamic is beautiful and that is interesting though because there was scarcity in terms of material things but there is no scarcity in abundance of my mom did a great job of nurturing hate she looked at me when I was in kindergarten I forget she said John You can be president and the every day the audacity the forward thinking that it takes for mom in the hood growing up where your environment is nothing but crime and dealers in danger but life and find all of these things intermingled and we hadn't had a black president so for my mom to say hey you can be president early on and reason I start with that is because obviously the most fundamental ingredients anyone's recipe so beyond that I was raised initially a town then we went to Florida 'cause my mom's like this place to raise a family so we went to Florida when we came back I graduated high school with decided to come back to the city had this small town blues I wanted to become great and that's with a capital G I wanted to become rate why because it had its chip on my shoulder of Abbey never come up with anything and having seen my parents worked so hard I mean my mom was a custodian in a hotel clean toilets I was your job pop suppressor in a dry cleaner you getting paid forty cents every pair of pants impressed that was our reality and I knew I just wanted I feel like I owe it it selfish don't go out there and beat the absolute best I can't be and.

"With the mechanical bull over here. I am the mechanical. Boo. Audio off come to ride your bowl. So so. Because this is Trey hasten with the Robie family accompanies. We asked REO to stick around. We're going to talk a little bit about the cornhole tournament because we actually last Sunday show was post cornhole. Yes. Two days ago. The pitch for wishes, but we'll we'll recap because because we're recording after the cornhole. But you told a story you said the first time you come down to Charlotte. Your wife say you need to go to Coyote Joe's because you're fascinated with Cowboys not fascinated Cowboys fascinated with the Cowboys John did not Cowboys wearing cowboy boots. Robie cowboy hat. We can tell. So in your role a role, and I'm gonna be the walkout with a rhinestone cowboy the city cowboy. Can be. When we went to New York was the guy wears the worst of the no clothes. The naked cowboy he's a fraud. Connecticut. He's funny though, their countries. I'm really looking them that much. Right. He's making. Well, he's on dead movies and TV's, and yeah, it was a funny story came down on my first time ever come down North Carolina to my I do have a fascination with the south country music and. Boots. I love cobber have some custom cabinet lose. That's love was like my thing. I got Roper is boots ignored never roped anything. But they're cool. But my wife was I we're gonna we're gonna go to a place called Coyote, Joe. Yeah. There you go. And I was like sounds sounds good. She's like, it's basically a warehouse on the chemical bullet in a bar. I was like that's cool, man. That's like roadhouse. You know? Plexiglass in front of the drummer. So we go there, and I'm telling myself. Wow. I am a Jew in the south. I walked in. And I'm just in heaven. You know, what I'm saying to myself? I see the mechanical bull in the back. And I'm saying I gotta ride that I am not gonna let go I'm gonna muster all my physical strength. I will hold on until dear life. So we go over and the gentleman who was controlling the speed and mechanical bulls asking my name. That's it. Yeah. I'm not gonna tell him the names Arielle. He's in a butcher the hell. Our John Henry from New York. And so he said John Henry Gabon that mechanical. Oh. Now's john. How many people there made back to people? You know, I'm John Henry. Get on mechanical bowl. And I'm just like tighten up all my veins to hold on his ties, I cook. 'cause I was not about to fall off. He saw that. And he he he saw that. Couple people started coming around. I was looking good. Can't bull. John henry. John Henry with my veins popping up mechanical bull. And next thing. You know, he just started saying, you know, enough view need he turned to now turn the knob off and John. Hey, John Henry, I've realized some about the bullet doesn't matter how strong your matters how much for nets you. And I looked good off this old boy in the young ball. Many people know we I don't care how strong how much finish that guy turns that thing it's harder to go. I've been not off that bull. A couple times very humbling the same bowl Henry John Henry's been back to is a couple of times, we call need to go and the deal is you never knew you were going to end up with with your affection for this corridor. Exactly manage a property beside it, we the the White House nightclub and in the split rail lodges, something we cherish and a nation. Do a double. Doozy will go the the white lodge the White House. Go to lodge, and then not the laws. We had old Kylie Josan will. So you new to town. And we said we're gonna talk about cornhole pitching for wishes eleventh. And what did you think I thought it was a fantastic. Gathering event in great. 'cause you know, I think what we put together thirty eight wishes for kids, which is roughly six thousand dollars a wishes the average wish calls for there is nothing more that makes me more proud to work for Roby and be partners with Roby. And I think all of our partners our vendor partners are whether they're subcontractor insurance. I mean, everybody is a day. We're we all can be so proud. I mean, we we sometimes we argue with each other at work, whether it's above inner partner, or whatever. But it's it's just cool to see everybody come together. Like that. Yeah. I was I was me. For me. I'd never been involved with something like that. Entrepreneur, and I ran my own business. I'd never got involved in charities and stuff because this never had the opportunity to so when when you know, my first week working with you. He said we're gonna go to to this bet on Saturday. You know, make a wish I was just blown away by the goodness. And the goodness that not just the cause. But that your genuine concern for and caring for this cause and the the energy about it the office everyone getting ready for making shirts. Bad bad. Just such a fantastic. 'cause I'm proud to be with you guys when you guys represent causes like this. Well, we had we usually try to do a wish reveal or some. Mission moment while we're there. So in the middle of the day. I think his name was. Wanted to be a Carolina is big Carolina panther fan. But gave his wish. His siblings because they wanted to go to Disney and he wanted to meet the Panthers and do all that. And he had his jersey on his mom spoke through tears. It was all touch. Such a moment. What a wonderful day gray success to the Robie family Gracie says to all our vendors subcontractors, clients and associates. Thank you so much for what you do in Christian. Of course. She's the rhinestone cowgirl John Henry you've listened to at home with Robey..
