"Why do you think it was a stroke of luck. That glenn followed shepard grissom well shepherding. Grissom flew over called sub orbital flights and jeff visas is about tha to take one of those next month on the train. Shepherd rockets and richard branson. They're gonna try to race each other. That's right the new space race but a sub orbital flight is exactly that it doesn't get into orbit because they were riding a rocket the redstone there was not powerful enough to push a capsule with a human being on it into orbit and that rocket the atlas rocket just wasn't ready at it had all sorts of problems. It was exploding on the launch pad. And the the us program was not ready to to send a man into orbit. So shepherd and grissom had to settle for these fifteen minute flights where they went up and they fell down. And that was that and glenn was actually in line third for another one but by this point the russians now had had orbited not just one but two of their cosmonauts and it just become too embarrassing for nasa to continue to do these what they called short shots and they had to accelerate the orbital program but there were still very serious worries about that atlas rocket that i mentioned that it just wasn't ready and it wasn't going to get ready and in fact even on the eve of john glenn's flight the president of convair astronautics which was the company that built the atlas rocket would only allow that it had a four and five chance of sixty one in five chance of something happening to john. Glenn now shepherd in grissom. Didn't they go. Above with a redstone rocket they briefly went into space. They were weightless for a few minutes. And then gravity kicks in and they They came straight down. They were not able to actually get high enough to get into orbit and so. It's a lock into orbit encounters redstone rockets at got him up. There that's right. Those were redstone rockets. That's right but glenn was the first to ride that. Atlas remarkable just a remarkable story in. He never was in gemini which was the dual.

Aldrin's last week in buzz really wanted to be the first man on the moon. Sure he did He famously did and And i think it was tough for him not to be i. I talked to my kids about it. Sometimes and they say he's right there he was only a couple of minutes later but I think it's a tough thing to take sure was now. What made you key in on. John glenn for the book mercury rising well glenn was really the star attraction of the mercury seven. There was something about his personality that that really shone more brightly than any of the others and in fact his his flight did as well. And i really wanted to understand what what made him tick. You know i. I had seen the right stuff of course like so. Many people had read the book. I read a lot of the popular accounts and glenn is is always described the same way as a boy scout as a sunday school teacher as kind of a guy and and it seems to me that there was some truth all that and yet there had to be more john glenn or he never would have been able to achieve what he achieve. I mean this this. Not just a sunday school teacher in a scout. This was actually the most decorated combat veteran of all of the mercury seven. Some of the other astronauts hadn't even fun in combat. Alan shepherd had not fought in combat and It was sort of a sore spot for him. But it fought in world war two. He had flown corsairs in the south pacific. And he had he had fought in korea as well and shot down a number of migs and was well on his way toward becoming a flying. Ace when when the war ended that was his great disappointment at the end of the war was that he didn't have time to to rack up a a more more kills and he was quite frank about what he was there to do He was not there to have fun. He was there to get a job done and he was pretty fierce in getting it done the original mercury seven astronauts. They're all dead now but most of them did not get along with john glenn did they. They did not Scott carpenter did and they had a close relationship the two of them but the other five really kept their distance from glen..

Whoever wrote this is ridiculous now, anyway. Neil Armstrong walked on it Now has there been a moment in the last 25 years as big as the first moon landing? Good question. A very good old head with a good one there. How about that just depends on people's points of view. I guess it's for his achievement by humanity. Probably not. I'll tell you what that guy did that free solo. Climb a bell. Cappie Tan was impressed. That was pretty impressive. And, of course, Crystal Pepsi. But other than that, I can't think of anything. Okay, Okay. Can you think of is there a replacement? Once? Buzz Aldrin dies of somebody. Is it just our president? Moving forward. I don't know that we were there We have If you talked about feeling toward if you talked about the astronauts the way you talked about them two egg generation Z, you'd be called a misogynist. They were real heroes and men were men then and yeah, that you just didn't want women to be up there. Yeah, That's right. That's all. They would like. Sure you on. All right. What else you got? All right. How to watch Biden's first speech to Congress. How to watch it? Yes, how to watch, So I just not tune my eyeballs to the TV or to the radar here to the right. How you doing? Same goes for the Oscars but was delayed didn't pandemic Only about 200. Only about 200 people will be allowed in the House chamber for the speech due to safety precaution. Here is my irritation even though they're all vaccinated. All of them have been vaccinated. This administration is using this pandemic is any excuse to do something which they think might not reflect great on them. Kamila Harris does not want to go. She doesn't want to go to the border because it's not safe. I guess it's perfectly safe, though, for those law enforcement officers to be mixed in and not testing, and God knows who's coming across the border, But she can't go down there wearing a mask that would be unsafe. No. She just doesn't want the juxtaposition of her now standing in front of kids with kids in cages, and they don't want a full house for the president's speech, because he'll get confused very easily with the noise. Absolutely. I also think he will. He might clap back at him. You know, buying this is one of those guys that actually if you poke him, he may actually poke you back. And so if I think you may be right, they may be trying to Yeah. Protect him in a way. Yeah, they're not there. They're gonna be like who is kind of rowdy on the right. Let's not let them in. This is a This is a weekend at Bernie scenario. Almost. I'm telling you, they don't want a full house for that. Right there is the pandemic has nothing to do with this. Now bite is expected to give an update on vaccination efforts as well as unveil his would $0.5 trillion American families plan. Yeah, that is my man. I love that I support American families. Why don't you That's exactly that's the whole idea. They give this benign sounding almost hopeful sounding name to a plan that's going to put inflation so high. You're not going to be able to afford anything. Your family will be dependent on a government check. First Flight With Mike Manseca
"Tell us about how you started. First flight dot org because this is really obviously. You've you've been to kitty hawk. Many times Tell us what your first time going there. Well my first time was. I couldn't even tell you how old it was as a kid and it actually was with my dad the outer banks always ended up being a place we would go for vacations. I like for instance when i graduated from high school. Joe double hills is where we went for our Graduation party week. Whatever you wanna call it But i've been there before and my family. And i now go actually. I live in richmond. Virginia right now uh-huh even though i'm the head of an organization is down in kitty hawk north carolina but For probably about the last twenty years. We've gone every august for for summer vacation. 'cause we discovered as vacation place all those years ago and we just love. It can't think of a better place to go on vacation so we still do it now when you were a kid and you went there did the significance of the location of the you realize the significance of the location or was it just a a neat place to go for vacation. No no i completely did and much chagrin the rest of my family. They didn't look at me. Like how many times can you go to the same place you know what changes nothing changes. But i. i don't care. It's like a pilgrimage to go to the wright brothers national memorial to go to the park to see where that first powered flight happened and i'm a fanatic about it since i was a kid and when two thousand and three came around and i knew it was going to be one hundredth anniversary of flight trying to figure out. How am i going to get. I'm gonna get down there. Because i had a job. It's in december and then as it turns out my wife said. Hey i put for your birthday put together a trip for you and your dad to go down and spend a couple of days at kitty hawk and be there on the seventeenth and she'd actually only set up for a couple of days and my dad said well. This is wonderful but if we're going to go we might as well go for the whole time. And i think it was a five day celebration so worked it all out. I begged my boss to please have a couple of extra days off and We were there for all the days of celebration. And i have to tell you there was nothing never been anything like it. I don't know if i don't know if you've ever been to any of the celebrations but that one and of course was worldwide as far as the publicity for it but i can't remember how many people they said were there but the thing about it is i saw every kind of playing you can think of especially military plane fly over during those days. 'cause there was an air show every day and let's see also saw a lot of famous aviation people so the great thing was being able to see. Neil armstrong john glenn bob who hoover patty wag staff any number of people who were being honored that week And then on the actual seventeenth john travolta introduce president george w bush and he made a speech on the seventeenth of course out of all those days. Which day was the ugly rainy day. Yes it was the seventeenth. It was cold. It was rainy The attempt to do the flight at ten thirty five did not go off like it was supposed to. But i was so glad that i was there so now. I'm just curious. And i don't know the answer to this question. The wright brothers choose that location because they were building the airplane in dayton. Is that correct. That is correct. Actually wilbur wrote to the national weather service. And said hey. We're looking for replace. That has a lot of wind and his isolated and they could do their experiments in in private. Kitty hawk was a bonus because all the sand dunes. Which makes it a lot easier if you have an accident while you're trying to fly instead of trying to land on hard ground Which is essentially what they had in ohio flat hard ground right so they had gotten a number of different places they could try and they went ahead and wrote to the postmaster down in kittyhawk in he basically said hey. If you come down here. We'll do everything we can to help you find a pleasant group of people and we look forward to it so they basically took them up on that offer. So now when did you. Did you start the first flight organization. No no no under current president but the first flight organization or now you got me saying it's the first flight society actually started in nineteen twenty seven as the kill devil hills memorial creation. I hope i said that right. It's changed names a few times but yes Nine thousand twenty seven kill devil hills memorial association basically what it was was a group of about forty six businessmen put together by a newspaper publisher named W sunders who said hey. Let's let's this an important place. Let's get a memorial built. You know and this is something that would be seeing nationwide and would also you know side benefit is would be reason for people to come and visit each daughter bax back. At that time there was no bridge over to the outer banks from the mainland. You had to take a boat a really. Oh yeah you know. And that was the same. As in the time of the wright brothers. They had to take boats with crates of all their parts for their their planes and it was quite the trip and and even the first when they were building the memorial and people were coming down and they were dedicating. It was a heck of a trip train rides boat rides. You know wasn't like let's just get on a plane. Fly there because even at that time it was pretty it was just. There wasn't a lot of people just going to go up and

Besides cleaning there, it's not just the H K C systems or ductwork systems or one of your talking about we do it like a complete audit. By the way, 99% of projects We dare win slaw, and I just recently heard a commercial on this station from on the utility companies. How important a carbon monoxide detectors are now they wax highly. Actually, I tell people this my whole life The codes that are out there even though some are Ray crazy, But there are minimum so average like in your basements and stuff, And when we do things way, also put different detectors in there. It's a little part of our process. A lot of people would do this. This while John Glenn pretty good. If they don't even know what we're doing. We find gas leaks. We find moment. By the way. We're doing an audit today on the building the building that we did, and we're installing the air purification already in the ceilings from roof leaks and things. My guys have found mold and stuff. They already have the equipment where they cleaned it out before they even talked to the customer. Just there's all kinds of other things that we're doing. Two. We looked through your whole building through your whole home or whatever. So by the way, I keep thinking, I keep laughing. If my mother was alive, I could hear you yelling at me saying Go to your room. You got a cold? You have to stay there, you know to me. Honestly, I did it for allergens from my Children years ago. But now more and more. I honestly think it's going to stop a lot of regular viruses. Regular flu is regular cold air coming in blue season. Right now, we're actually working in radio studio where they're everybody's close Contact everything there is being bred. You're 5 ft from other people, so it's really helps businesses really well, something that's really huge that we do that people don't understand this. Advanced air purification and building technologies. We look at your whole building so things that we do that no one else does. Number one. If your doors you gotta open your doors will put automatic doors in. If you've got open doors for bathrooms, we're going to take those doors and put an automatic or a way to get into that bathroom without touching anything. We'll put in with certain kinds of hair, hand dryers and stuff. So you're limited is where you're touching, especially where stuff gets spread restaurants. I'm taking the whole storefront off and making them so they could open so restaurants and now three sides open I'm building I'm building canopies on restaurants all over designing them. I'm designing them with looked really well. And by the way, the top of the canopy is solar, right. So now you got a clean energy. You've got solar were upgrading your building in town restaurant owners. I love you all I feel for you. I love food. Eric Wells food. I think it's a disgrace. What's happening? These states where there's locking you guys down, But this is a way to open and by the way that the states the governors in the states, you're telling you take these precautions. I have solutions. Whether it's a school they're putting a filter and filter does nothing really does nothing compared to what we D'oh? And killing all the viruses and germs in your hour. Yeah, it really is amazing when you look at how transformative this is. And look, this is where Ron's decades of design and build experience come in. Yeah, you could call somebody to clean your ducks. You could call somebody to install some type of bogus air cleaning system. You call one of these solar leasing companies. "And here's a great example Anne Glan wife of the late astronaut and United States senator John Glenn has died of corona virus which is sad but you do know she's a hundred years old right you did know that is it it doesn't say the one hundred year old wife's of John Glenn not any gland wife of now I know I know it's a little detail and I'm NIT picking but come on come on and then and then you look in the story how how did she get it was she in a nursing home where she was she was in a nursing home near Saint Paul Minnesota said she died of cold in nineteen she was married seventy three years to the late John Glenn the astronaut so once again we have two of the biggest indicators that were known to us over two months ago can continually continuously being ignored now they mentioned in the story I understand that it was in the lead but those are the those were the indicators just like when the information was coming over from Italy and there were a handful of us obviously rush at the lead there were a handful of people saying how old are these people what was your health condition I mean do they have issues already where they asthmatics did they have COPD what was going on here you have a one in one hundred years old living in a nursing home call the culvert Calvert and then they don't tell you how how did she get it you're in a nursing home how did you get did someone bring it in did someone visit you because there was a ban on visiting nursing homes in Minnesota remember so this is these are the games we play it would be so easy because the American people are smart enough if every day we saw a transparent coherent list of recoveries in cases but when you drill down and you see that ninety nine percent of people that jet cove it survive and all of that what is it forty eight percent it's considered mild they could work with it if they wanted to if they weren't banned but you don't hear that I don't know about your state but in my state it's just a it's just a running count dead people dead people take cover stay out of the parks look out put a mask on your dog don't watch out and we're all waiting for the murder Hornet I don't know if you've seen that that's going viral that's next I think they they throw that out there two weeks ago just to kind of test run it and see you know if this so if we can't keep this covert panic alive how do we how are we gonna win any seats that's why I think the Democrats are probably thinking I mean what what about the murder Hornet Dave can we bring in the murder Hornet I don't know I don't I don't know if it's big enough eight hundred two eight to twenty eight eighty two I am going to get some more calls but I don't want to start one because I do have a heart break coming up but before I go to this heartbreak I want to remind you that Colorado is now the second state to revise its covert numbers and by doing that what happened twenty three percent of the deaths originally attributed to covert nineteen in Colorado looks they disappeared just like in Pennsylvania we had a percentage of ours disappear.
