"You know, it's possible, but they've had some workmanship errors going on with both the capsule and their rockets. So it's hard to say. So there's no immediate danger unless if that thing starts to heat up while it's sitting there, they could have shorts and problems and hopefully not, but I suppose potentially an explosion. But if they saw that temperature escalating rapidly, they'd just decouple the thing and send it on its way. We just forget it's so amazing. It's so amazing. The safety record is so good. So it's good that relations are still solid with them during this time of intense political political pressure, but if they can't provide safe spacecraft, this is kind of worrisome. You know, there was a time years ago when people were afraid this would be the case of SpaceX, you know, The Old Guard aerospace industry was saying, oh, they can't do what it won't be safe.

"Live in the dream. There we go. Anything exciting been happening in the educational world since the last week we've been here. No, other than Monday we had the Artemis launch attempt. And because it was scheduled to be so close to the start of school time, they allowed students to be to be out with a parent excuse and a large portion of our student body took them up on it. So that was an excuse absence. Yeah, we had was a parent excuse absence, which is a little weird. You really don't want to go into it. But there's different things. We have still don't understand it. Well, you're allowed in block scheduling you're allowed for absences. And if they are parent excused, then if the parent right to know, lord Johnny wasn't feeling well. Then we won't call home because we know that the parent knows that the student was out, where if the student misses four days and we don't have parent notes, we're going to call mom and dad and say, mom and dad, you know, Johnny hadn't been coming to school. And then they're going to say, oh, well, I knew that. And we're okay. Or that's news to me, and maybe they will deal with little Johnny. But it's just one of the days that you're allowed. Either way, it sounds like it's kind of sort of okay. Depending on who the parents are. Oh yeah, yeah, it's fine. But we only had, we had 1200 kids who go here and we had 200 show up. So wow. So it was a very small, small day. Wow. Yeah, I ain't seen the likes of that and 80 years probably. Oh no, no, no. We saw it before John Glenn day when John Glen went up on the shuttle. Was there another update on july. Twelve was about the on july ninth. No it was probably all related. His core updating terms how rose out and it's very interesting to wonder how the actually rolling out like you think about it. I I have taught over 3000 people to fly flight engineer airline. Passport, gliding everything that the FAA has. I've got the license for and I got outrun you. She will now be the oldest person to go into space. The record was held by John Glenn, who went up when he was 77 with the discovery in 1998. I am so glad that she's going to beat him because he did not like the idea of women flying in space. So take that John Glenn, So she's going to go up July 20th with Bezos, his brother, and then somebody who won this $28 million Charity auction. Um, so it's It's a pretty chill flight, though I mean from someone who's never been out because it's only a 10 minute flight and you go up 65 miles just beyond the edge of space. "Why do you think it was a stroke of luck. That glenn followed shepard grissom well shepherding. Grissom flew over called sub orbital flights and jeff visas is about tha to take one of those next month on the train. Shepherd rockets and richard branson. They're gonna try to race each other. That's right the new space race but a sub orbital flight is exactly that it doesn't get into orbit because they were riding a rocket the redstone there was not powerful enough to push a capsule with a human being on it into orbit and that rocket the atlas rocket just wasn't ready at it had all sorts of problems. It was exploding on the launch pad. And the the us program was not ready to to send a man into orbit. So shepherd and grissom had to settle for these fifteen minute flights where they went up and they fell down. And that was that and glenn was actually in line third for another one but by this point the russians now had had orbited not just one but two of their cosmonauts and it just become too embarrassing for nasa to continue to do these what they called short shots and they had to accelerate the orbital program but there were still very serious worries about that atlas rocket that i mentioned that it just wasn't ready and it wasn't going to get ready and in fact even on the eve of john glenn's flight the president of convair astronautics which was the company that built the atlas rocket would only allow that it had a four and five chance of sixty one in five chance of something happening to john. Glenn now shepherd in grissom. Didn't they go. Above with a redstone rocket they briefly went into space. They were weightless for a few minutes. And then gravity kicks in and they They came straight down. They were not able to actually get high enough to get into orbit and so. It's a lock into orbit encounters redstone rockets at got him up. There that's right. Those were redstone rockets. That's right but glenn was the first to ride that. Atlas remarkable just a remarkable story in. He never was in gemini which was the dual.

The job's Ohio Wants to put this money into letting as revenue guarantees the airlines to reduce the ruse reduce the risk of starting new routes, and they think that this is going to be one of those investments that helps pay up. And yet it has sown in other cities that have direct flights from especially the coast. Those tend to gain and tracked more businesses and Columbus is doing really well with attracting new startups and businesses. But they want to see this go across Ohio. So Jobs Ohio, which is The job's programmed that's set up by the state of Ohio to encourage economic growth, really sees this as an important area and wants to spend this money. So people in Akron Toledo, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, have these direct flights in and out. S so it's a pretty cool idea. We'll see if it works. I couldn't even tell you how old it was as a kid and it actually was with my dad the outer banks always ended up being a place we would go for vacations. I like for instance when i graduated from high school. Joe double hills is where we went for our Graduation party week. Whatever you wanna call it But i've been there before and my family. And i now go actually. I live in richmond. Virginia right now uh-huh even though i'm the head of an organization is down in kitty hawk north carolina but For probably about the last twenty years. We've gone every august for for summer vacation. 'cause we discovered as vacation place all those years ago and we just love. It can't think of a better place to go on vacation so we still do it now when you were a kid and you went there did the significance of the location of the you realize the significance of the location or was it just a a neat place to go for vacation. No no i completely did and much chagrin the rest of my family. They didn't look at me. Like how many times can you go to the same place you know what changes nothing changes. But i. i don't care. It's like a pilgrimage to go to the wright brothers national memorial to go to the park to see where that first powered flight happened and i'm a fanatic about it since i was a kid and when two thousand and three came around and i knew it was going to be one hundredth anniversary of flight trying to figure out. How am i going to get. I'm gonna get down there. Because i had a job. It's in december and then as it turns out my wife said. Hey i put for your birthday put together a trip for you and your dad to go down and spend a couple of days at kitty hawk and be there on the seventeenth and she'd actually only set up for a couple of days and my dad said well. This is wonderful but if we're going to go we might as well go for the whole time. And i think it was a five day celebration so worked it all out. I begged my boss to please have a couple of extra days off and We were there for all the days of celebration. And i have to tell you there was nothing never been anything like it. I don't know if i don't know if you've ever been to any of the celebrations but that one and of course was worldwide as far as the publicity for it but i can't remember how many people they said were there but the thing about it is i saw every kind of playing you can think of especially military plane fly over during those days. 'cause there was an air show every day and let's see also saw a lot of famous aviation people so the great thing was being able to see. Catherine graduated with highest honors from the historically Black West Virginia State College after graduating Catherine took a teaching job in Virginia which is two years later. She was handpicked for spot as one of the first three black students at the state's beats flagship school. West Virginia University Catherine enrolled in graduate school there for math but left after a year to get married and start a family family eventually should return to teaching then in nineteen fifty to one of Catherine's relatives told her about an exciting new opportunity the all black West area computing section at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics was hiring for the Langley Laboratory. The West West Area Computing Unit was a group of African American women who worked on complex manual math computations for the programs engineers it was tough and vital oh work the west computers as the women were known analyzed test data and performed math computations early space program they were key success when Catherine started working at an aca she was quickly noticed for her sharp mind and the quality of her work. Catherine Katherine still had to use separate bathrooms dining facilities from her colleagues because NACE was segregated until nineteen fifty eight when it was incorporated into the new NASA where segregation was banned there. She worked for the Space Task Group which was charged with figuring out space travel in nineteen sixty. St Catharine Co authored a paper with one of the groups engineers about calculations forgetting a spacecraft into orbit. It was the first time a woman in her group received seved authorship credit on a research report and it was just the first twenty six published papers. Catherine authored in nineteen sixty one Catherine Atherton began working on NASA's hyper ambitious Mercury program NASA was looking to catch up with the Russians and put the first man.
