"Coming up on 5 minute news. U.S. underlines its support for peaceful protest after demos in China. Buffalo grocery shooter pleads guilty to murder and terrorism charges. And alert level raised as Hawaii volcano begins eruption. It's Tuesday, November 29. I'm center templeton. Security has been tightened in China after widespread protests against COVID restrictions that spread to some of its biggest cities. Police are out in force and several people have been detained. Washington supports the right of people in China to peacefully protest a U.S. National Security Council spokesperson said on Monday. They added, we've long said everyone has the right to peacefully protest. Here in the United States and around the world, this includes in the People's Republic of China. Chinese authorities have eased some anti virus rules, but reaffirmed their severe zero COVID strategy after protesters demanded president Xi Jinping reside in the biggest show of opposition to the ruling Communist Party in decades. The government made no comment on the protests or the criticism of Xi, but the decision to ease at least some of the restrictions appeared to be aimed at quelling the growing anger. It wasn't clear how many people were detained since protests began on Friday and spread to cities, including Shanghai, the country's financial center and the capital, Beijing. Zero COVID, which aims to isolate every infected person, has helped to keep China's case numbers lower than those of the United States, and other major countries. But it has confined millions of people to their homes for up to four months, and some have complained about a lack of reliable food and medical supplies. The ruling party promised last month to reduce disruption by changing quarantine and other rules. But public acceptance is wearing thin after a spike in infections prompted cities to tighten controls. The UK and Germany are among other countries who have expressed support for the protests, while the United Nations also reminded Chinese authorities to adhere to international human rights laws. It has been reported a number of journalists for foreign press outlets have been detained by police, while covering the protests. An avowed white supremacist pleaded guilty on Monday to first degree murder. In a mass shooting in May that killed ten people at a supermarket in a predominantly black neighborhood of buffalo, New York. At a hearing 19 year old Peyton gendron, pleaded guilty to multiple counts related to the shooting, including a charge of domestic terrorism, motivated by hate. Gendron was accused of carrying out the attack, which also wounded three other people with the intention of killing as many African Americans as he could. It was established beyond a reasonable doubt that he had this gruesome motive that in just over two minutes he murdered as many African Americans as he could. Erie county district attorney, John Flynn said at a press conference after the plea. He added justice has been done today. Gendron who was 18 at the time of the attack initially pleaded not guilty after a grand jury returned an indictment in June. He faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole on the domestic terrorism charge alone. Sentencing is scheduled for February according to media reports. Gendron was the first defendant in New York ever to be indicted for a domestic act of terrorism, motivated by hate in the first degree. Civil rights attorney Ben crump described the hearing as a gut wrenching experience for the victim's families he represents. He called for gendron to be given the most harsh sentence for the crimes. Hawaii's Mona loa, the world's largest active volcano, has started to erupt for the first time in nearly four decades, prompting volcanic ash and daybreak to fall nearby. The U.S. geological survey reported the eruption began late on Sunday Night on the big island where lava flows were contained within the summit area and weren't threatening nearby communities. However, residents who were at risk have been worn to review their eruption preparations. How long the volcano erupts four and whether it could cause lava to flow to populated areas of the island is impossible to predict, said USGS spokesperson, meal Corbett. But I can tell you we're in constant communication with Hawaii civil defense and they're providing updates to community members. Scientists had been on alert because of a recent spike in earthquakes at the summit of the volcano, which last erupted in 1984. Portions of the big island were under an ash fall advisory issued by the national weather service in Honolulu, which set up to a quarter inch of ash could accumulate in some areas. Mona loa, which rises 13,679 feet above sea level, is one of 5 volcanos that make up the big island of Hawaii. During a 1950 eruption, the mountains lava traveled 15 miles to the ocean in less than three hours. We have two people that we would transport it to a local trauma center, both of those folks condition has improved. "And I'm Rachel Martin The white man accused of killing ten people and wounding three others in a racist mass shooting will be back in court this morning in Buffalo New York His hearing comes as New York's governor is promising changes to combat domestic terrorism earlier I spoke with NPR Sheryl corley who was following the story in Buffalo Today is what's called a felony hearing and that's where they determine whether there's enough evidence for trial Peyton gendron as you mentioned is charged with first degree murder And I'm like this is an open and shut case but it's not that simple according to district attorney John Flynn Emotions are high I understand the rawness of this matter However I do not operate in the court of public opinion I operate in a court of law And this defendant is innocent until proven guilty And Flynn says more charges may come however after a grand jury convenes an investigates the shooting there's a 45 day window for that to occur and the clock starts ticking today I mean we heard Flynn say the defendant is innocent until proven guilty We just have to note that the shooting at the supermarket was live streamed on a social media channel before getting removed And the suspect apparently wrote a racist document that was posted online I mean are those things going to be factors in the trial Well you know it really depends on whether they are admitted in court And the battle over evidence always plays out in trials County board association selected attorneys and private practice to represent the suspect And what evidence is allowed is sure to be an argument between the defense and prosecutors if the plea remains the same And if the case moves forward So let's talk about what the governor of New York is doing Kathy hochul has moved along with the state attorney general to go after social media companies tell us more Well the governor said the nation's biggest threat is the mainstreaming of hate speech and white supremacy and easy access to military style weapons and ammunition She sent a referral letter requesting the attorney general letitia James to investigate social media platforms Twitch and 4chan and others that were apparently used to amplify the attack and hoku also signed an executive order that sets up a domestic terrorism unit They'll develop the best practices for law enforcement for mental health professionals for school officials to address the rise in homegrown extremism And we'll make sure that they're trained to know How it occurs where it occurs and how to stop it So in addition to this focus on social media the governor is also announced this plan for tighter gun controls what can you tell us She wants state lawmakers really to close gun law loopholes that she says allow specialty guns to be sold without permits And just a whole package And in the midst of all this the community is mourning There have been vigils held all week and tomorrow a funeral will be held for 67 year old Hayward Patterson one of the ten victims NPR Sheryl corley reporting from buffalo Cheryl thank you You're welcome The U.S. is working to smooth out tensions with Mexico U.S. special adviser Chris Dodd met virtually with president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador after the Mexican leader threatened to skip this year's summit of the Americas if Cuba Venezuela and Nicaragua are excluded from attending It's a concerning sign of a new chapter in U.S. relations with Latin America which has been electing more leaders who are not as interested in having a close relationship with the United States Here to talk about all of this is NPR White House correspondent Franco ordonez Hi Franco Hey laila So Franco explained this controversy to us You know the Biden administration has indicated that the United States will only invite democratically elected leaders to the summit which is taking place in Los Angeles early next month So the leftist presidents of Mexico and Bolivia announced that they would skip if leaders of the three of the governments as you mentioned Cuba Venezuela and Nicaragua are not invited Amlo as he is known has been critical of the U.S. in the past But that relationship between the U.S. and Mexico is really significant so it's another bold stance for him to take And I'll just note that the right wing president of Brazil Another regional power is also not expected to attend but for different reasons So how is the U.S. responding Well first they're making it clear that invites have not gone out and decisions have yet to be finalized But that hasn't stopped them from revving up the diplomatic engine There were discussions yesterday with the U.S. special adviser that's former senator Chris Dodd And those talks will continue And before that the U.S. made two major announcements that some see as an effort to try to meet Lopez Obrador and other leaders halfway On Monday the Biden administration announced plans to make it easier for families to send money and visit relatives in Cuba reversing a Trump era move And on Tuesday the administration announced it was easing some oil sanctions on Venezuela Both of those things are things that the governments were seeking Now one of the arguments being made is that the summit should be more inclusive Why not use this forum as an opportunity to confront the autocratic leaders and tackle these issues head on You know it's a really compelling argument that many are making And clearly there is engagement that we see with those announcements on Cuba and Venezuela But Mark fierce dean who recently left the Biden administration as a senior adviser tells me there's a big difference between that kind of engagement and standing next to the autocratic leaders for a widely scrutinized photo at a forum that promotes democracy You can't have in that picture someone like Nicolas Maduro who's committed crimes against humanity Some would like to Ortega who's imposed a dictatorship and jailed all the political opponents and someone like DS canal of Cuba They just don't fit there They don't belong in that picture Now he says that It's a very different dynamic Are there political implications to the administration's decision to engage with these countries particularly with voters in Florida Yeah some Democrats actually see this as a sign that the party is giving up on winning Florida a state former president Obama won twice Fernanda mandi a democratic pollster says Florida is the one state where U.S. policy toward Venezuela and Cuba has a direct and political impact These decisions taken outside of the port of political context may actually represent where the administration wants to go from a policy perspective However there is always political backlash to these types of decisions in Florida and they are certainly being experienced now Now Venezuelan American and Cuban American voters have proven to be decisive in Florida as ammonia notes So there is a lot at stake But I'll just note that the invitations still haven't gone out so there is still time for things to change but not much The summit starts the week of June 6th NPR White House correspondent Franco ordonez thank you Franco Thank you.

store Erie county district attorney John Flynn told reporters Saturday The wheels of justice are moving swiftly A felony hearing will not take place in 5 days And then the investigation continues So we have taken the appropriate steps right now to get him behind the virus 18 year old Peyton gendron is being charged with first degree murder for allegedly shooting 13 people Saturday afternoon at a buffalo grocery store ten of the victims died gendron is pleading not guilty Authorities believe the crime was racially motivated Minority leader Mitch McConnell leading a delegation of Republican senators on a visit to war torn Ukraine President zelensky announced the visit on telegram Saturday morning Video shows McConnell accompanied by senator Susan Collins and John cornyn being greeted by zelensky in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv I'm Brad Seeger You're listening to Bloomberg businessweek with Carol masher and Bloomberg quick takes Tim Steven from Bloomberg radio All right with all the market volatility again this week I mean it's really been the theme of 2022 market volatility So we recently caught up with a perfect guest to talk about it He has seen a lot of market cycles Fair to call him legendary Allen Patrick Hoff an early VC he helped build and grow such companies as America online Office Depot A little company called Apple audible as well He's the chairman emeritus and cofounder of gray Croft He's also got a new book out Carol It's called no red lights reflections on life 50 years in venture capital and never driving alone You know everybody I meet is lived for such a short time relatively in this market that they only see everything going up and I've lived through so many cycles that to me this was inevitable it's going to come Everybody was living in a euphoric state that things were only going to go up And I think you better be prepared for some kind of hiccup and I don't know why it's going to happen but that's just the way the markets work How big of a hiccup and how long are the hiccup Well I think it depends on what the after fall is after this initial setback Will the market stabilize or is it going to you know after a certain period of time go down again I mean the levels that the markets have just been increasing steadily until the beginning of this year I mean last year was dramatic The whole Trump era was dramatic I always follow the theory that markets don't like surprises And all we had was surprises for four years and the market kept going on So I think we've got an after effect of that And I just say one thing this is not the time to sell I think you got to ride the rocky periods and watch how to see how it stabilizes Even a name like you know you've got meta meta platforms right Facebook down about 38% this year We were talking about Netflix before we got going It's down almost 46% since April 19th when it just freaked out the markets right When it came down with a lack of subscriber growth So I don't know how do we make sense of some of that Is that opportunity to you Or is it like there's something wrong Well if I were following public markets I'd be looking very carefully for where the opportunities are in terms of companies that have relatively good values and relation to their revenues and their profits and which ones have the balance sheets that are going to sustain themselves No matter what happens to interest rates But in terms of meta and Google and Apple I think we're going through a period where for finally the Congress are now focused on the monopoly positions that these companies have And there's legislation pending And I think that it's long been longer company You really are coming You realize that the Internet has not had any regulation there's been no regulation in 25 years we're living with outdated monopoly laws And I think that Europe has just passed some very significant laws And the U.S. is going to follow I think very shortly And that is an overhang Very curious about your thoughts on this Does the monopoly power that you argue that some of these big tech companies have to what extent does that stifle innovation when it comes to startups Of course it does I mean you know I can't tell you the number of companies I've been on the board of where I'm going to aboard me and they'd say traffic was down 50% or whatever the percentage is why Google changed their algorithms I mean that's monopoly if I've ever heard it I mean we our original monopoly laws were related to control of the railroads that control of oil now we're seeing a different kind of monopoly control And that is you know when you have 90% of your search going through one vehicle and when people are putting their own internal products and offerings ahead of other products that are available that's monopoly Consumers get hurt Yeah Oh ultimately of course Well let's put this way The advertisers are getting hurt The competitive businesses are getting hurt And I.

"Our leader. John flynn who is a terrible person. And completely sexist. After she takes the tesseract hydra with a five brainier. Shield created by inventor howard's dark. Lynn reluctantly promotes her. To the combat role of captain carter stark uses the tesseract to create a weaponize armored suit for rogers to pilot as the hydra stumper carter and fight many battles until goes missing while attacking a hydra train carter and her allies find rodgers when they infiltrate a hydra base and see red skull using the test iraq to open a portal and summoned an inter dimensional creature which kills them. Carter enters the closing porto to force the creature back almost seventy years later. The test iraq opens another puerto which carter emerges from meeting nick theory and clint barton. So that was the first episode and it was really interesting. It was really cool. To see peggy as captain carter and i also liked the hydra stumper thing that they gabe steve do. They really did make a good team. But just like in the end of captain america. Movie peggy and steve did not get that last dance. 'cause time separate the two of them so side anyway. The next episode called what if teach. Aw became a star. Lord in nineteen eighty eight. The ravin jurors are sent to her by the sis dalieh ego to retrieve his son. Yon do for lying about will conduct and they return there. So t- child can reunite with his family elsewhere. Ego approaches quill. Who is now a dairy queen janitor. That's a funny state for anyway. This is a very interesting version of guardians of the galaxy. And i liked it. What i thought was really interesting. Was that in this version. Thanos is actually a good guy instead of being a villain. Because the fact that he's on their team you would not think that that would be a thing as the plot of the last one. It is basically this. The last one is called what the world lost. Its mightiest heroes over the course of a week. Shield nick theory attempts to recruit heroes for the vendors initiative. But they are eat mysteriously killed. Natasha romanoff injects tony stark with an unexpected fatal dose of the theme dioxide. Clint barton accidentally shoots and kills war. Before dying intern bruce banner halt explodes and romanoff is attacked and killed while investigating the other murders before she dies romanoff tells theory at the murders are related to hope. Doors brother loki confronts theory about doors death and theory proposes an alliance defined doors killer. Now who is source killer. Well i'm not going to reveal that in other words. I really want you to give this theories a chance because it's really interesting. I watched all them. I think my favorite is carter. Because it kind of made me wanna rewatch captain america just because i was a little bit confused but yeah i liked seeing peggy carter as captain carter. It was really cool. Then my second favorite would have to be the episode where all of the vendors basically were killed because the surprise of who did it at the end is really interesting..

I mean, he had a data center at one point where you could walk into I can see like, you know, four floors of computers. It's now like half the power of an iPhone. But you know, always around technology. And then our mother was a singer and an artist. So we You kind of grew up in this world of technology and art and entertainment. And I think you know that helped me and my brother kind of form form Jib. Jab, Jib, Jab, Jib. What was your first paying job this by the ways of inside which were not continue, But we don't know what you're neither what was your first paying job? My first paying job? I had a DJ business when I was in seventh or eighth grade ahead of your time Go around, and I would I spin records at birthday parties on No CDs back then. So you know, I had to figure out how do you Where do you put the table so they don't skip when people are dancing thieves were the problems of a mid 19 eighties DJ and noted that satisfy everybody had the Karel Malik have any song they want. Oh, yeah, no, no. I had to have creates a 45 records. I mean, it was great. It was a great It was a great thing. You know what those things are? They called when none of those little things that put in the 45. What are they called? The spiders. Spiders in the girls told me. Okay. Learn something every day. How many hours you Workaday Now, Now I work. Probably about I would say, 14. I get a very, very early I've got young kids. So I start my day. Really, really early And but try not to end it too late. I tried always have dinner with the kids. And how do you balance Well, You just told me balanced life and work. Yeah. Bounce it. Zhar do I mean, I You know, I find that my most productive hours are really early in the morning and especially now our studios over 70 people. On Then we have hundreds of contractors we work with, so that quiet time in the morning is critical for me, because once I get into my day, it's like my time Is everybody else's And then you just try to shut it down when you can't show it down, But it's not. Not that easy. Jib Jab, jib Jab. Um did you did you copy? I'm I don't mean to do this, too. But like South Park started with that Christmas card. Yeah, Yeah. Yeah. Killing Jesus. Yeah. No, no, it was It wasn't hailing Santa. It was, I think both. Maybe. Yeah. One fell swoop. For us. It was there wasn't one person we're trying to be. It was really just like seeing Was from worked in investment banking. I was at warden Do my MBA and my brother was an independent animator out of who just graduated art school and seeing the Internet. The idea that Wow, you can make something in distributed all around the world was really inspiring. And so I showed my brother the technology, he started producing animation that we could distribute on the Web. We just had fun. And it just felt like this was the beginning of something really, really big And here is a chance for the two of us to get in at the ground floor them any weird hobbies to have any weird. I do not have any weird hobbies. I have what to have. Ah, company I'm running and three Children. No, no strange hobbies. I still play the drums a little bit. That's a good hobby, But yeah, nothing. No, I'm terrible, Terrible. I have this fantasy of weather stepping back out like you used to play in high school of like Coming back in my life fifties and like forming some sort of like bar band. I don't know You played the first going on that I Greg, can you come up here and say that? Yeah, exactly. Um Do you have a mentor? Does your father? Maybe? Yeah, Definitely. Definitely. Definitely. My father, you know, always like even from early on and then also as the business changes. I mean, even when you're facing Really tough decisions. When you're thinking about how do you go after an opportunity? I find that he's still the best. He's still got the best point of view. But then you have other people as well. Like our lead investor from players, John Flynn. You know, not only an investor of the sea, but also like yeah, really good men or someone who helps us think through. Think through problems and go after things. Are you one of these people that could take advice from others? I'm really good at take. I am. It's something I've learned. I think early in my career. Um I had much Maybe I was less confident in myself. So advice felt, you know, you can filter through it totally like and I have a CEO coach and I am open to advice. The hard thing is when you're CEO. No one wants to tell you anything to CEO Coach CEO coaches, Someone who who who basically is there to help me think through Issues because I find a lot of times in your CEO. It's like pretty lonely. Everyone's got a vested interest in the outcome of a problem. And so it's often times hard to find objective advice where it will inspire, inform and connected community of entrepreneurs. This business rock stars. I'm Pat O'Brien get Gregg Spiridellis The drummer like play, Wipe out Not not here. Not on not on camera. I'm gonna ask you, can you Perhaps? Yeah. Job s O. A typical days.
