"Row on the Bloomberg, the chief investment officer of Soros Fund Management, we're talking about Dawn Fitzpatrick spoke exclusively with Bloomberg, editor at large, Erik Schatzker. So much to talk about here and here to tell us more is Eric. He's on the phone in New York City and Eric George Soros, well known to our investment audience, and Eric, He's also someone very real were very well known to political circles. But don Fitzpatrick, not as well known. No, no. And it's important to point out that the job of managing money for George Soros Carol is not an easy one, right, George Soros. Was the greatest, arguably the greatest macro investor of all time. Some people think he's the greatest investor of all time. Um, and so that's a tall order. You'd have to imagine and in part as a result of that Soros fund Management, the organization that manages the money that he uses in his philanthropy. Has turned through nine chief investment officers. John Fitzpatrick is ninth. She's beating the over under. She's been there for four years. But in the space of four years, she has acquired a reputation as being Let's just say less aggressive, less ambitious, less risk taking than George Soros used to be, and that is a reputation. She is very eager to change because she believes It's Soros fund management with its permanent capital, and its ability to do big trades has some unique advantage is that she is trying to press And over the past year has in fact been pressing. But $4 billion to work in the march and April meltdown of 2020 right is the pandemic took hold and over those past 12 months. He's generated returns of 30%, which may not sound all that great If you look at the stock market, or if you look at some of the best performing managers like Kathy would of Arc investments. Foundations are very different. They can't take 100 Equity, You know, 100% equity market beta risk. They have to have a much more diversified portfolio. They have to be much more market neutral and so in that context 30% is actually really good. So, Eric, what is her strategy been, especially with regard to working with or or not with outside managers. Well, it's a good question, because you know when you run an organization like sorrows, and there is that much knowledge in house with George and others you have to decide how much do I want to do internally. How much do I want to do externally? On the public side so that they're about 50 50 private markets, You know, 50% public markets on the public side. They're about 75% internal and 25% external. They're largely external on the private side to do some of their own private credit investing. To the degree that they need private equity. They source that they outsource that almost almost entirely and what they're looking for. Are people who have specialized skills right there. They're experts in biotech, for example, that's one area that she highlighted. Or it's a fun that puts on a lot of leverage, as she said, I'd rather have somebody else but on the leverage as opposed to me putting on leverage, because if they do it, it's non recourse. The banks effectively can come after Don. If the external manager is taking the risk. Of course, if things go pear shaped That that won't make that. You know that investment will make any money. But but there'll be no collection agent calling. Hey, listen, Eric want to play a little bit of of your exclusive interview? Especially where you know, I bet it can be tricky is because I was Sumi. Not everybody agrees with George Soros and his political opinions, But let's play a little bit of Eriks. Exclusive interview with the chief investment officer of Source fund management. Don Fitzpatrick, Check it out. There have been I pose where a corporate CEO has. Zero dust from the book. Seriously. Yeah s o. That basis of political views. Yes, that's said I just have to believe More people than not. View the work George does as a true benefit. To society, and I think there are more times that it works to our advantage. Then to our disadvantage. I would be remiss in not asking you to name some of those companies that Ext. You out of the allocation By the way, I would love to, But I will not. I will refrain. Okay, So he refrained Eric from from asking, But look, you were. You were as surprised as I think Many people were surprised to hear that because money's money And this is where we are in the world right political views or guiding investment decisions. Business decisions. He did that. You could argue that that's not really, you know, in a fiduciaries interest, right? Everybody in the position of leadership managing money on behalf of shareholders. Should be looking to generate the maximum return. That's certainly what done six. Patrick is trying to do. So I was absolutely stunned that there are CEOs who would zero out which is to say, give no AIPO share allocation to an organization like Sorrows, which has demonstrated its ability to be a long term holder and a very good Partner. Great stuff, as always, Eric, Thanks so much for breaking it down with us. Our own. Erik Schatzker editor. Large a Bloomberg News with us. They're on the phone in New York. Check out his exclusive interview with the chief investment officer of service fund management. Don Fitzpatrick. "He tore his a C l and remember you played in the postseason game with a partially tornado. Yeah, it's a partially franchises. Fault. Yeah, definitely step in there. You don't want to play any any Tor is a CEO in the game. And you're just telling. All right. Well, let's see how well they play Seattle. I want to say it with Seattle, but it was, like, all right. Never mind that That was that was a bold take. But it's not. It's not happening, but a couple years later, because they continually did it in high schools. They continually do it in college. It was only a matter of time before NFL team said, You know, I'm gonna draft that kid. I'm gonna give him a shot to be my guy. And it started with Lamar Jackson, who was amazing, took a Ford progressive coach like John Harbaugh. And really Ozzie Newsom, who was there, general manager at the time to see it. On, bring it to the league. And then he wins. E M V. P. And then Kyla Murray gets drafted by Cliff Kingsbury simply gets that job because Kyla Murray is gonna be the number one overall pick that season and look where he is. I mean, there's an argument for Cliff Kingsbury to be coach of the year this year. Right? Not gonna happen, because blind Brian floors will probably win it. But we get a little of my common that I missed yet true true the tree but you usually get coach of the year when you exceed an expectation. So precipitously right that it just it stands out. Nobody thought that Brian floor as the Miami Dolphins were going to be at six and three right now, game out of first place in the thought they'd be better. But now I'll give you that. Nobody saw saying any any made the decision to bits of popular veteran and John Fitzpatrick to go with the young kid and to, uh, who's done nothing but get better each and every week. You know what's amazing to you Think about that. The timeline of You know, Usually there is a slower transition to whatever it might be when there's a complete overhaul in philosophy, right? It just it trickles it. It doesn't just flow in right here, right? But think about the one year different So Lamar Jackson was one name away from being a second round. Pick one name away. And then one year later. The guy we're talking about now goes first. Overall. That's right, So the door's wide open. It's wide open now, so if you have a new offensive scheme or or play caller or head coach Who believes in it. It's it's changing its you see, you're going to see this type of offense. Maureen Maureen the NFL now to help because there's Mork kids playing this way in college, and Kyla Murray is going to be their example. They don't need to be. You know, 63 or 66 like Trevor Lords and be that prototypical, you know, pocket passer to make it in the NFL. You can be 5 11 or 6 ft. Harvard talk ill of Murray is 95 would have definitely not six. Ever. It is. You could be that guy and not want to change position. Remember that conversation was Yeah, he'll play in the NFL. He just got to play. You know, Wide receiver will be a kick returner. Ruby was gonna stick with baseball. Be honest until we had him on the show of the Super Bowl. That's what you and I both surmised he's playing football didn't divulge on the show. That's right. But up until that point And and I was still kind of married to the the older, the antiquated, you know, mindset like a lynch. The prototypical quarterback size man is good, but boys small, um, at that point other there's gonna go to baseball. But you see what you see these kids in college doing it all the time. D cells deep. How did my anger at myself teeth dear King of Miami Mean Dude, There's a bottle baby throws. The nice ball in the pocket obviously is great with his legs as well. Two weeks ago, we had 550 all purpose yards and five touchdown. Those at the instance. Take aim. Yeah. Against NC state. I mean, it tells you enough about, you know their defense if they say still dead, but still, he still did it, so it's changed Power. Murray is the example that all these kids were looking to right now, saying, Yep, I I can get into the league playing this position, not, you know, playing some of the position I can get in the league play in this position and the beauty Of of us. You know, talking about that guy is if we could have him later on in the show, Which is gonna be fun because I can't wait to talk to him again. It's been awhile since the Super where we had him and we will have calamari on the show today, which is awesome. And you know he's listen. Allow these things we could get to the next Gen stats. And, you know he hits this top speed, And he's been contacted 72 times less than the more Jackson which is actually a stat up where he is, in terms of you know, this point versus the more at that point during the Moors NGPC. I mean, just, you know, go to any website, you could find the stuff, but what you can't quantify. But you know if you watch the Cardinals is he's got poised and he's got that slow heartbeat that every team craves and chases. He does not get flustered. Nope. He's just chill. He is an assassin. He is unbelievable. Wow, what a game really was alright, teak. We're going to get to his taking meds. We have column or a little later in the show. We'll get to a by the way the n betrayed. It's it's happening. CP three He's been rerouted. I think it's a great move. We'll get to Dustin Johnson will get the braiding the Bucks back with an impressive offensive display and coming up.

"The secondary players on his describe the inside receiver is going to the outside of the field running down the sidelines. These guys are just running either wide, open or mismatch when you have a guy that's got speed versus a linebacker on top of them, so they're always having a step or two on the defense. Georgia had a hard time slowing down Alabama. Still, guys to remember the tide got 41 exact. Absolutely. It's It's one of the areas that's been a struggle form that they've been really good. Against the run all season. It's been a little bit more difficult against the past, but they're facing another really, really difficult team, throwing the football and then just failing right now, with some of the communication on past defense. How will accounts impact his absence? Speed of that? He's kind of a Q B of their defense. We're starting to see a lot of that kind of manifest itself early in this game. A cough coming back to Georgia and again go into the end zone for the touchback has been their quarterback. He's the senior captain. He was involved in a traffic accident Last week, Bulldogs came back from their road game, It happens. Use the SEC defensive player of the week 13 tackles last week, He had three past breakup. He had a fumble recovery. He was their best defender last week. He's out now. Louis C. Is out, so they're down to guys in the secondary that's crashed. The Gators. It's going just put a lot more on the shoulders of steps invented this offense, But they're gonna have to score points because until George is able to kind of calm things down, we don't know when that's gonna be number one to be 40 45 points down, first down for Georgia and Stencil manage drops, The throat flips it tight, and it's dropped. John Fitzpatrick Added in stride. That would've been a big game 20 maybe 30 yards, but Fitzpatrick couldn't hold it. That's just that's unfortunate. That's Patrick coming to the game, which is five catches. The entire season and he's wide open and this is one where I wouldn't even say he starts to look up field because they just saw the replay. He's actually like staring at the football as it hits his hands. He's just not able to secure it mean this game or offense is going to be at a premium. You've gotta find a way to make that catch. 28 21 Gators With the lead 7 40 to go in the first half. Georgia has it 2nd and 10 on its 25 from the right hash. Headed to throw once again. Good protection. Ames fires deep ball overthrow looking for Jackson You had a step on the corner on that play Ball was overthrown George's only down seven points. The difference so far in this game is that Cal Trask is not missing those crows. Georgia's missed about two or three of them so far in this game, but Florida is not And if you're going to end up continuing to hang with the Gators with the way that they're moving the football up and down the field, you've got to hit those You've got to make. The catch is that Fitzpatrick dropped. You gotta make the throws when your receiver has a step on the defense. Dropping an overthrow on consecutive plays, leads us to 3rd and 10 on the 25, Georgia 7 34 to go in the first half, third down and 10. Get out of the gun for Bennett Looking left. Big rush comes. Bennett scrambles right, dumps it off short. There's a mere white with reception, but he chopped down on the 30. I'd line after a five yard pickup by Brad Stuart got him alone. Remember Brad Stuart couple of drives ago was one that was shaken up, had to come out the game, but he comes and makes that sure tackle on white. Before he's able to turn upfield. Get his shoulders. Going more towards the Gators goal line. Chance to break it's actually pick up the field. Give Stewart a lot of credit. Get him down on the field, forcing the punt team out here for the bulldog. That's another three and out. The Georgia offense has endured another great panto by Georges Jake. Our model all the way back inside the 10. Tony feels it backpedals inside his five tries to run it back and only gets 25. That ball was headed towards the end zone for a touchback. Go is a 61 yard punt. What was he thinking about why he decides to feel this punch is beyond me. I have no idea. Yes, this guy's electric. Does he have confidence in his play? Absolutely. But once you realize you're retreating, and you're going back towards your own goal line. The PON team has beat you Let the ball go play the odds that this ball is going to go into the end zone..

"I wish though and they don't do this enough. And I am reluctant to say. This another words, I don't wanna tell a pilot. What to do? I would never do that. Although I say this. Say it on the air as what I would say is I I like when they talk to you a little bit more. I like when they say greetings from the flight deck when they to the passenger's side. Like, I assure when we're yes, when we're when we're on takeoff when we're going up, and we, you know, we get not to cruising informational or can they be doing little stick is when my wife just left me and things. Whatever you want to just come on and say, here's here's what's going on. Here's wing this. Yeah. I would love the pilots on air Italia. They give you far too much information information if you bump a little bit. I'd like them come on and say we're gonna try and find a little bit smoother air, by the way, most people don't notice the bumps. I, of course, think that the bumps her terrible. But I had I must say I had two very smooth flights. I was very grateful travel with the comfortable the Mallard duck that you know, I did not I did not. But in in Palm Beach, for example, I had to sit you know, I had to see individual people to sit doesn't seem waiting for the plane waiting for the wine. But it was very I was fine buried and guy. David there said, you know, this this area is very rarely credit. We didn't go to the gates to this area's very rarely crowded. And in fact, it wasn't crowded. It's very nice. You don't pace you sit sit. We think you would pay sitting. I look straight ahead. Somebody told you you said. Because I know always being a great flyer. And when you hit that turbulence I said, it's just like a bump on the road. It's now has brought me. Various ways as you going over dirt road in the country. Yeah. Or it is described as as an actual literal ocean of air, and it's going to have waves and chop to it. The one thing I will say captains or pilots have told you that. Yes. So none of them have said, it's just it's a pocket of empty Aaron. We're falling out of the sky briefly until I can reset. Okay. Thank you, thankfully. Nobody is good. They would know better than I I'm just saying I find that. You know, and they there I will pilots like to fly. Yes. They liked to fly. What they'll tell you is that planes are built to fly. Thank goodness. That's their -til then want to fly. They do you know, I had a very interesting conversation with somebody in the medical profession recently. Who said that one of the things that medicine is learning they're learning from the airline industry, which changed its whole mindset to stop thinking that the captain is God to include people in the decision other than the captain and the medical profession. You don't do that needs to do that. Your left leg doesn't get amputated instead of you're right les. And this is this is big and certain cultures. I know Korean air had had a bunch of issues with this. Because there were so ingrained to recognize hierarchy that they couldn't speak up when are very clear issues at play. And this led to some big crashes. Both thank flowers on those. Yes. And I'm very grateful. I I mean, everyone makes fun of me by got on. And I got up, and I got everything was fine. "English burder going to borneo in miserably cramped coach seats i might add but nonetheless they are making the long flight to borneo they are adding to a problem that is going to make life tough for every nobody including us the species some twentyfive fifty seventy five years from now but you also have to hope that that enthusiasm if any kind love of any kind is going to translate into tangible actions closer to home so i ended up and just if i could interrupt jonathan add to that point that that that very fascination and willingness to travel is actually beginning to have tangible results on the ground in borneo in west papua new guinea in south eastern peru and all all around the world where the very fact that those birds exist and are available to be seen by the world has actually begun to result in local tourism industries that are have have the effective protecting those habitats so exactly learning about things allows us to understand more how to protect them we are discussing the science the beauty of birds and the threats they face this hour and efforts to undermine the laws protecting them john fitzpatrick is my guest director of the cornell lab of ornithology and jonathan franson from santa cruz california he just wrote a great national geographic essay called why birds matter and are worth protecting you can find it at our website on point radio dot org here's the sound of the grey winged.

"And joining me now from ithaca new york is john fitzpatrick director of the cornell lab of ornithology than professor at cornell university he's been a bird or since he was five years old the cornell cor mel lab of ornithology is one of the groups behind making two thousand eighteen the year of the bird john fitzpatrick welcome to on point i ca jane grit to be here why did you want to do that why did you want to make two thousand eighteen year the bird well for many of us of course millions of people around the world every years a year of the bird but this year in particular we are marking the one hundred th anniversary of the enactment of the migratory bird treaty act which is arguably the most important single piece of legislation never passed to protect birds in the world and so one hundred years later we still certainly have a lot of birds around but we are face they are facing a lot of threats to our four organizations plus a number of other organizations as well recognized this is a really important year to to kick it up and notch a little bit terms of how much attention we're paying and what we're talking about so one hundred years later is the migratory bird treaty act still effective definitely is it has been affected through its entire time and i want to underscore it's only one of a very large number of laws that have been passed since teddy roosevelt's a revolutionary idea that that the government plays a role in protecting natural resources natural heritage but the treaty act has has kept lots of things lots of kinds of threats to birds at bay and certainly deserves of to continue to be a observed and and frankly strengthen as we continue jonathan just pointed out earlier to build more and more things that are getting in the way of birds staying alive win towers and skyscrapers and of have our cats out there so paying attention to laws like this that say wild birds really do matter is more important now than ever so you talked about kicking it up a notch strengthening this treaty how do you do that what do you do what do you want to do well i think the most important thing about treaties like the migratory bird treaty act which together with some partner laws really encompasses our three countries in north america mexico the us and canada the idea is to adhere to the basic spirit of these laws which says if you're doing things that are resulting in the deaths of birds modify avoid and mitigate those actions and pay attention to the fact that if we don't do that we're going to be losing this absolutely unique element of life on earth namely this amazing diversity of birds that live all around us you know every year during the nighttime hours three billion birds move over our heads from canada northern us down across the country to mexico and back it's an amazing spectacle of life on earth and these laws are really intended for us to respect them and and enjoy the fact that we get to live around this miracle three billion birds that's the number all think of the next time i look above let's go to melissa in youngstown ohio hi melissa you're on the air hi jane thank you for taking my call i love the show this is a topic very near and dear to my heart i grew up in a very nature oriented family and one of the things that my mom pass down to me was a complete utter fascination and love of birds she should've had a bumper sticker that says caution bird watcher makes sudden stop and even sitting at my you know in my dining room looking out at my own feeder was simple songbirds.
