"Through in depth interviews you'll learn about their work, their goals and what inspires them as creative individuals. Here's your host, Maurice cherry hello everybody and welcome to revision path. Thank you so much for tuning in. I'm your host, Maurice cherry. Now you've heard me talk about the tenth collective, the tenth collective is an initiative that is from revision path and from state of black design and we came together to make this initiative because we both get approached by a lot of companies that are looking for black designers. You know, I mentioned this. I think maybe an episode or two ago, but this sort of time period right now in September, they call it the September surge because the fiscal years for a lot of companies began. And so companies start looking at hiring as they begin their fiscal year, also to try to prep for the holidays and such like that. So if you're looking for work, the tenth collective is a great resource for you. Like I said, we want to do this so we can pair black designers with companies that are looking to hire black designers. It's free to join the tenth collective. There's just a short profile that you have to fill out and you're all set. You'll only get contacted by companies when they're ready to talk to you. And you can hide your profile from companies or remain completely anonymous. It's a great resource whether you're looking for your next opportunity like I am, or you already have a gig and maybe you just want to see what else is out there. You can even hide your profile from your employer or from any other companies as well. Head on over to the tenth collective dot com to join or you can check out the link in the show notes. Let's start the show. All right, so tell us who you are and what you do. I'm Jordan Taylor. I'm a graphic designer at pentagram, working a lot of different projects, mostly branding, but a fair share of editorial and motion design, a few websites here and there. How has the year been going so far? My year has been pretty great. I recently moved to a new place for the first time. I'm now living out in Brooklyn, New York. I moved up here for work and, you know, it's been a chance to go on new adventures, see different things, meet new people. It's been pretty interesting. A lot of changes. When you sort of look at the year in general, where we're at now, you know, we're recording this right now in August, mid August. Is there anything that you want to accomplish before the year ends? Oh, I'd say that right now, I'm kind of in a place where I'm trying to figure out what my next thing is. One of the things I really want to accomplish for the years over is starting to make those steps toward whatever that looks like. Whether it's like an expression of self or new business endeavors, just like starting to really get back into more like self activated things like, I don't know, you know how they say you kind of are always going to kind of need to fall a couple of times when you're on your journey somewhere. I'm ready to kind of start taking those babies first steps toward whatever new horizon I'm hitting tour. I feel like I'm in that kind of place. Okay. Now you're at pentagram, which is a extremely, extremely well known design consultancy. Talk to me about that. Yeah. Yeah, pentagram is it's so many things, like I'm there now. I've been working there coming up on two years in September. When I started, it was as a remote position. I started as an intern, but I was working from home still down in Atlanta. The journey there was just so unexpected. I just didn't think that it was like a place I was going to get to, you know, like when I started really diving into design, you know, you kind of get introduced to different ways of doing things and what brand design looks like and who the kind of designers to know are and you find out about different names and you kind of end up finding out about pentagram and it just is a crazy experience to walk in there and actually see these people in person and not from like even like a crowd for some sort of forum that they're putting on it's been really interesting just like even beyond like the partners you have all the people working there on the different teams and you find out like how a team works and how they approach projects and different ways that people think it's like a big incubator. It's really been like the way I got there was so much so of just like putting my head down because it was like the middle of the pandemic and like just trying to get to the best place I could after leaving school so in a way like I don't always fully take it in, but in those moments that I do, it just really kind of hits me and it's like oh I'm actually in here every day if that makes sense. It's a lot of work but it's also a lot of just like air of ridiculousness to me. It's like worked out to this level. It sounds like it's hard to put into words. I mean I'm kind of listening to you stay over to talk about it but I mean I can imagine you've got such design heavyweights like Michael Beirut and Paula scher and Eddie go par whom we've had on the show episode two 34 and people want to check that out. But yeah, like I can imagine having that much I guess the weight of it all is probably a lot to think about from your perspective. And then at the same time, I still have work to do every day. Like I still have like four or 5 projects to work on. It's a balancing act. You try to make yourself known and reach and get to know people, but at the same time you're still trying to keep the main thing, the main thing and I guess to do the work that got you there. So. And you've done that. I mean, you've done the work that got you there. It's not like you just walked in off the street, and the pentagram, like you said, you had your head down, working, and we'll get more into your background and your story. But you deserve to be there. No, absolutely. Yeah. I say all these things about how it feels to be there, but I don't think I ever really felt I didn't belong, maybe just that I didn't expect for anybody to actually figure that out if that makes sense. What is a typical day look like for you at pentagram? A typical day for me when I first started there is an intern, one of the big things that I was really kind of aware of was that I was probably not going to understand how anything worked. So I would reach out to my mentors, one of which was Louis Michele. He used to work at Collins now. He's an apple. I reached out to John Ferguson and my court smith. I just kind of asked him, you know, like you all are professionals, you all are in this design world. Like, how do you actually keep track of all the things that you're supposed to do on a day? Like, how do you know how much time to allocate to a project? If you've got multiple projects going on, how do you know when to start the day or when the end of the day? Because it was working from home and starting out, like everything was a little too soft for me. Long story short, I got into making to do lists to start the

"Far as he's going to go. And he didn't even begin to go close to for whatever reason. Let's watch and see who have rescaled forward how he plays game four. But no, he knows what he's doing. You're a 100% right. He identified that I got to do this. This is going to enhance our chances of winning. No one else can do this the way I can do it. But he knew and he did push that envelope, of course. And he had the situation sized up accurately. They weren't running program out. If you're him, you're saying like, I don't know how these young dudes, Jalen Brown, adjacent Tatum are going to react. Let me give this a shot and see if I can get them rattled a little bit. And again, like, you know, well, we'll see, we'll see how it works. Draymond's got to focus sometimes on draymond two. And sometimes he kind of, you know, let's clear of like, what's important now, draymond, to me, you got to be more productive with what you do and sometimes I think he's thinking too much of how he can instigate how he can get into the heads of some of these, you know, the opponents rather than worried about his own game. No, I find a very interesting the way grant Williams stood up to him. And grant Williams, you know, I think he's fascinated by the whole thing. And he's like, I'm not going to take that crap. I'm going to show the world. And you got to be careful. Yeah, interesting. And he's a tough kid. We know he's a smart guy. He's a tough guy. He doesn't want to be draymond green per se. But, you know, he's not going to be that kind of guy as a player. But he wants to show the world, I'm not going to be pushed around by draymond green. I mean, literally, physically, I'm not going to get pushed around. I'm pushing back. That's the thing. Who else does draymond have to back him up? Like, look at this team. Look at look at the Golden State Warriors team and how unintimidating they are. Right? Like Steph Curry. You're not scared to step. Clay, the nicest dude in the world. Andrew Wiggins, like the nicest, quietest, like, non confrontational kid ever. So like draymond's out there in an island. Come on, Looney. He's big, he's strong, but he doesn't say two words. They don't have anybody. They don't have anybody. No. Something occurred to me, guys. Yesterday. And that is an analogy. Now, there are finesse teams other than him. They are the finest team in the league with in terms of expertise and other than him. It reminded me back in the day the day and of the 60s and 70s. The Canadian. We're beautiful skaters and Vanessa. One resident enforcer. John Ferguson. And I'm thinking if they're an analogy here between what John Ferguson stood out as the one guy for them at that time..

"On cleve hill kind of a murky sort of a morning and all sign of rain. No drops hitting my face or anything this morning so I don't believe there's going to be mushroom powered the present in the next hour or two anyway. That murky cloud could be a looming presence for the Brits as we come flying. Could be. Again, again, our biggest audience is the UK, well done yesterday. I did warn. I did warn that Britain could have a very good childhood this year, but I think we've got some really good chances. So as you were explaining to us yesterday, Gordon Gallup's his horses who were going to work. He got sources that were going to run in the morning. Who reads that to you today? He just can't trust any countries the whole string were out to smart. And so I wrote parity central this morning. I think she's running in the mayor's novice hurdle. So she's not running today. She run tomorrow, isn't she? Yeah. So I was very happy with her. She just did two countries on the inside. Obviously a nice two counters. And their owners today, they just do kind of a lab one lap on the inside just to stretch your legs, take all without the work kind of pop over a hedge, a couple of hedges along with elf and disorder. And all was good. It's a bit harder. And how is the Tiger looking? Because obviously he's a hero of the sport, but also you mentioned delta work. This is going to be his first ever run in banks race, but he has schooled over banks fences already, and we have that image that video that Gordon tweeted out. Of delta work absolutely pinging one of the bank's fences at Sheldon. So the fact that he worked again over them today is intriguing. How are both of them? Well, the start would tell you all this absolutely looking magnificent. He's in the form of his life. Lisa Neil was writing about smart and Dave, you're also going on and then for a small oil. He looks fantastic. Again, never really written take a role. So I don't really know the vibes around the house but the vibes from the men on the ground and the people on their backs and that are all very positive about them. So I'd expect them. Maybe one of my bankers today, to be honest, tell you all. For different reasons. And I felt it was an unbelievable train and fees last year to win the cross country again. After back if you season that he had. And I think garden are very little credit first because obviously he was licensed. He didn't have to lace at the time. And I think this year is even more determined to win us, which I roll and see etched in history. I should say, and tell to work, delta work is actually jumped more hedges than you'll actually jump on the race. He's actually jumped more edges than jumps this week and the inside of the track would practice storms. Then he'll actually jump in the race. That's about depending over a few hedges this morning. To be honest, he could run a big, big race. Obviously he has the ability. He needs to. He needs to recapture some of his ability or his form. But he possibly could, but however, it is a very, very big ask for a horse to run first time in a bank's race around Shelton. Against the likes of Tiger roll and the voyagers fleet and it's going to be very difficult for him. I would say if he had a nice run around today and finish 5th, there would be a superb run. I would say, you know, for his first encounter. And for his first encounter and yeah, Tiger oil is the one. The ground is right for him. If there was rain last night, it had been nervous. No, I think Tiger roll is the one and the all the vibes are good anyway. And there is something a bit poetic about the fact that Tiger will burst onto the scene winning the triumph for a little under a certain Davy Russell. He won two financials for Devi and Davies in the saddle again today for his final ever run. If he wins, there's obviously going to mean an awful lot to all of you, a contract, but there is something a little bit poetic about that that is back to where it all began in the triumph of all those years ago. It's going to be a lot of it. I could actually tell you a good story about him. Years ago, I used to write for the bloomfields operation in new markets. It was a jumping operation, set up by Sheik Muhammad, and John Ferguson was a trainer. And do you get all of the flat horses? Would come from different yards. They would pick them to which ones would go jumping and whatsoever. Whichever ones will go jumping. And I think John Ferguson didn't like tell your role. So it let him go to the sales and be sold to Nigel hall. And he held on to a horse called. Which I was writing. And I wanted to try and trial muscle on him and he was either favor or second favorite for the triumph that year. And I never forget we weren't really given Tiger or any chance. In the meantime, Giga sound had bought a Nigel hawkman garden was trained and lo and behold. I was countering down the hill on broad and thinking I was going to write a winner to try and take a roll rocked up on my outside and we were also Madonna on the triumph. So that was a that was a fair blow, wasn't it? Not only that, he went on to win 6 nearly 5 times as a child and festival in two English internationals as well. Oh man. That's the newly Darren, isn't it? I'm trying to run a syndicate and pick horses and choose who it is. You're going to keep making decisions. Absolutely. Just a quick decision and it can all go one way or the other. That's a good story. Just a quick one, Dennis. How does the team feel at team Elliott will say yesterday? There was 14 runners yesterday. Yeah, there's a bit of pressure on, is there? Yeah, it'd be nervous now. Within reason, obviously, there was a lot of pressure but then there's an awful lot of chances left to come. I taught some of the horses around with huge credit yesterday. I was standing. I couldn't believe she got paid, but she did. And pretend there was a couple of disappointed Riviera to tell it seemed to go wrong on the race. Some stage and looked a bit flat. Mighty partial pulled up in the supreme numbers. He's a hugely talented artist. And the Fred winter didn't work out from the get go. The start was a mess, and a lot of hearts are Titan got no run. I ended up having to convoy it. And I still run the best part of the ground was probably a little bit quick for all of them. Yeah. So look, Ron wild Frederick ran with great credit in the last, but you'd have to say the pressure is on now for a winner and I think it will come today. I think it'll be Tiger oil today. And I think if he could get over the line today, I think one wants one clicks, I think the lord will be a flurry when American Mike is very well fancied as well. And even music drive is fancied to run well in the bumper. And he looks fantastic in that as far as yeah, it's very nervous time is hopefully a lot of work out. And out of interest, just because Patrick Mullins was asked this question as well and obviously it was easier for him because he'd had a winner. And Willie, but Willie was.

"Toolbox when you, when you consider his his line up and that's grit and that somebody to, to step in when Liberties are taken, I believe in the 26 game regular season for the Providence Bruins, it was, you know, just against the three team division, the orig put sound, tigers and Hartford Wolfpack that these guys were really you seem so much, you know, you play in this team, like, thirteen, twelve thirteen times. I mean, they would just really going after some of the younger players and the Providence Bruins roster last season was pretty much a transformation of. We need to get the youth in here, replenish and they did a great job by, by those complimentary pieces that they had down there and winning the Atlantic division for, I believe the the second straight year, I could be wrong on that. But no, I just think that some of the younger guys are just needed to have that on the bench. Like, you know, we're getting Liberty sticking on us and and yep. So I think that his addition and he played in ten games, he had a goal to assist three points, not a point producer, but he had 81 penalty minutes and freaking 10 games. So he's he's he's not afraid of anybody who is not afraid of anybody, and he I've seen several of his fights and it's it's, you know, and but it makes the other team notice to this says, you know, we can't take runs at a 5/8 Jack on anymore, when you look down the bench and see somebody like that. So he signed to it in a gel only deal does not mean he can go to the Boston Bruins and and muck it up there. He needs assigned to a two-way deal. At least he's undrafted and just a hard worker that just used his talent in his toughness to rise up through the ranks. So a good signing for Providence, good job jail. Each had had many great things to say in the in the official article produced by the Providence, Bruins website. And so did General Manager for the month? Is Bruins John Ferguson Jr. Had a lot of good things to say about him too, so good on Ian, but him as well wrap that up with and talk about some other things that the prophet insisted right other? I know it's like half hour shows about the probably. Well, yeah, I'm talking about babies. I know..

We also tossed in nigel. Eccles who's the co founder of fan. Because i've said many times before when the co founder of fan duel says. Hey i'd like to be on your show. You say grace. Let's put it on the schedule so it didn't necessarily fit in with our theme but it really great interview based on being a sports entrepreneur being creative and being innovative. I see now i'm doing that. I like it when the pressure mounts little bit. That's what i perform my best this month so far. I believe we've delivered. Matt resnick. sports talent acquisition executive nigel. Echoes co of fan duel. John ferguson of people in coacher monumental sports and entertainment and coming up later this week kelly franken. Vp of human resources for nyc fc. I loved this interview with kelly. We got into this really great conversation and she pushed the envelope as i would be getting ready to ask something. She'd be leaning into it even deeper than what my plan to question why she kept going. A layer deeper than even. I expected which was awesome. So i'm really looking forward to that. You see theme in the content this month. We are highly focused on executives connected to hiring in the sports under industry and understanding the trends for twenty twenty one. I sat back. And i figured to myself and amongst our team working sports we thought what does everybody need right. Now there's so much unrest. There's so much the people don't know what's going to happen in the job market for the sports industry in particular. "Which people are leveraging these digital spaces so You know. I've been on beer and sort of conferences in like. Oh we send. Everyone uber credit or radar. Gordon whatever and you can order lunch. And so i'm i'm actually a bit of a nerd. Wanted to see like how people are creating these moments. Okay i got one for you. So my wife and marketing and one of her vendors which they work with. They sent her a bottle of wine and said join us tomorrow night for a session with the winemaker and then we're going to talk a little bit of business and so it showed up on her door immediately. She felt special. She felt committed and she was like okay. Let's go so she cracks. Open the bottle of wine. She goes this event the winemakers there and answer some questions and then they do a little bit of a business talk afterwards. And i was like that was genius. She showed up and was paying attention and happy. Good bottle of wine two years ago that would have been. We're gonna fly you out. You've gotta handle those logistics. And you can't tell me. The price tag is higher for that. It has to be hotel. Food food beverage like all of that so now she felt good about it. She felt as They gave her the information she needed. It was a win win. So i'm really experienced really excited to see how those moments stay. You know someone mentioned the other day. When nine eleven happened. Airport security was never the same anymore. So this pandemic has happened. What will never be the same as we go forward and there will be some things. I think you know the mask. That's probably something that's just gonna be sort of incorporated into the fabric of how we how we go about our day to day lives So it'll it'll be interesting. And then i'm excited. You know someone that mentioned a you know the the the previous pandemic and then it was the roaring twenties and see what is the roaring for our group going to look like because there are a lot of people were at home Whether they've been furloughed laid off or just getting back to their core. They're leaning into these passion projects. They're really following their purpose. There's coming entrepreneurial so it'll be it'll be so interesting to see what is birth from this timeframe you know what i love is. I wrote an entire of questions i was gonna ask you and i don't think i asked a single one. We just started talking. And i love that. I absolutely love it. I didn't hit on any of those questions. And i'm fine with it. I'm totally throwing it out. But what that means. Is i've taken enough of your time now but we talked a lot about the people side of your job. We didn't get to talk as much about culture so in the future. I would love it if you would come back on and we can have another conversation about corporate culture and how important that is so. I'm walking in now. That i'm gonna come back and ask for another interview in the future of. You're okay with brian. Please do this point. We're best but so and they just call. You just have a casual conversation. I would love that. We can talk wizards all day long. We talk whatever you want. We can talk about anything..

"It's more of like you know as you look to where we're headed as an industry we talked about how in twenty twenty video interviews and become a bigger thing and they're going to stack like where. Where do we see those things that have developed and roles and opportunities that you think will stick and continue moving on as we go forward from where we've been great question. I think Forces going to be transformative. I think we're learning how to lean in and levers technology in ways that will be productive in ways that will You know when. I think from a budget perspective. There may be a higher front inexpensive because you have to ramp up but i think the cost savings you look at. The long-term plan will be there in seoul. The most practical way look at is just real. Estate you know at our company. We were traditional you. Come in everyone has office. We had the we work out of the arena. We continue to grow so we had to get a building near the arena to set to how some of our colleagues in different departments. Now do we need that additional space because we have been able to prove that in this virtual setting we can continue the business And i also think what we don't hear now are the naysayers. I was one of those naysayers not because i was against working from home because just all i knew you go into work. You have your desk. You have everything set up there. I thought that home possibly was too distracting. But now i've come to enjoy this moment and let me tell you. It took me a while to get to that once. We came remote. Because i didn't have everything. I was accustomed to having in my office so then i think we hit the space. We were sort of. This will be a couple of weeks. This'll be a months is here to say we. We come to that so now. "And i think it allows you to cut through the fluff because believe it or not. Some managers find it challenging to provide that feedback in a way that you know. They're probably consciously not want to hurt anyone's feelings. But i need that to grow. Because if if meet voting. The sheet of paper vertical versus horizontal is preventing me from getting a promotion. The next opportunity. I'd rather you just tell me that because it doesn't matter to me should brighten each time. I was doing so. I think i think that's that's very important As you ask one question about what. I noticed about The difference is different industries in coming to sports. What i have realized about the people that work in sports my colleagues my friends. My buddies many of them have had this. Lifelong passion is so there is this level of commitment that i think you don't always see in other industries i think there's there's something tied to their childhood memories. It's it's it's deeper than the job That's what i've come to realize people And colleagues that work in sports. I like myself i sort of fell into but many people like this has been a lifelong wish and goal for them when they achieve it they they settle into those spaces but i also think sometimes they could be doing themselves a disservice because they have settled into a space. Okay think you want to make sure that you're not Becoming stagnant and sometimes. I'm a firm believer you know. Sometimes you have to go to grow And it never made that. You can't circle back. That might be your hometown team. They might be your childhood team. We get that. But i also know that the The higher levels of source payment. They're set those people have worked up the ranks there at the place where they plan to see themselves. Sort of go into retirement. But i don't want you to become frustrated as middle management entry level because you're not seeing the growth progression at this particular place there's growth elsewhere..

"So then finally brian. We had a category. The said legal right general counsel reach out to that person reach out to that person. Hey everyone does so being intentional with that in that can cut two ways if you do apply for a job and you can find. That department has email address. Send them an email. Send that cover letter and use. It covers the body of the email. Don't say see attached cover letter resume. You wanna make it a one click email. I wanna see that cover that you worked hard on that. You've had plenty of people review. Let that be the first name. I don't wanna say see attach. I'll say the cover letters there and then my resumes attached. But pull me in immediately. Make it easy for me to learn about you but also to respond. I love this. I love how you have these tactical tips. This is exactly what everybody's dying for just to really understand best practices because that's what this is. I mean hiring is a subjective thing right. Everybody has a different thing that they may be drawn to her attracted to but there are best practices to follow from networking to interning to applying to interviewing. So let's talk about the interviewing side a little bit. You you know attack the volume you get that list down a little bit. You send out the video email where they have to do some responses. You keep whittling down that list and eventually you're gonna be in front of somebody who maybe it's you. Maybe it's a direct hiring manager. What is the goal for the person on the the employees the interviewing the person. Let me rephrase that the person who is the job candidates what should be their frame of mind going into that interview. What are they trying to get across. What did you think. Hiring managers want to learn those experiences. I think they want to verify. The knowledge seals abilities that have been identified on your resume as it relates to the position. That is what they should be looking for..

"Class you took each semester because that's not giving me a any preview into who you are and what you can bring to. The teams are thanking clear. Concise resume if you put numbers to help quantify your impact that is great but our the digital of it. And then i'm going to look at. Okay what the job titles. What was experienced. What was the impact. That's what i'm looking for. What was the impact. And then you want to make sure that it's not repetitive. Throughout i firmly believe if you said that you did this skill. So let's say for instance an entry level administrative assistant you know. I answered the phone routed mail and opened the office. Next role was a senior administrative assistant. Maybe for a different company. Don't restate the same bullet. Tell me tell me how have evolved from that first roll but don't keep a you know echoing you're saying because i want to see how you've learned. I mean say how see are grown. See what you've learned in that space. I'm going to start with the resume. And then i'm always excited when i see a color because if the resume has intrigued me i'm going to the colon announced. Say ooh okay. What other flavors here. I like that okay. So that's a sometimes a reverse people start the other way. I like to do it that way and that. That resume almost becomes a checkpoint to get you to the cover letter. Yes yes and so. I think what helps you stand out. When i said all of these resumes. I like let me look at the cutler. What else am i able to lift to see a glimpse into their impact your experiences storytelling their creativity Or what makes them different. What sets them apart. How much time would you guess you spend looking at a resume so full transparency. Here when i'm first starting it. And i don't do this as much as i used to. Now are probably spend more time. But when i met resume one oh one is a probably a little cross i i have. I have sort of also in that process honed in on the the profile. I'm looking for. Because i am i. Oh this looks really good. I have this aka. Don't like well. Maybe ak they should have been be candidates switching around but by the time i get to one on one i've honed in like okay. I have a general idea of the Of the skill set that we have captured. And now i am saying this is the best. This is the best. This is maybe a close second. Let me let me go back. Maybe i'm tired. But i don't want to throw. I don't want to remove them from the review process going forward. I would say in the beginning. I definitely spend more time compared to when i get to resume one on one. Yeah i got it down by like you said resume one. Oh one. I was like five or six seconds. Mike mike mike have. They worked at the right play. Nope okay next year because for me and for you like i was hiring.

"The sports scene in the dc region and john is one of the coolest most down earth people. I have ever spoken with in my life. And i mean it. He cares about the people and the culture of his operation. Care so much about every person that comes into the organization creates a culture that to bring out the best in every one. I've listened to this interview a couple of times now during the interview prostitute and the editing process. I just can't get over like john. Sharing advice and strategies and frames of mind and ways to approach things and he's just a laying it all out there for you and This is one of my favorites gear up one of my favorite discussions of all time. Here is john ferguson. Vp of culture people and culture at monumental sports and entertainment. Hey john what's happening. Hey nothing much. Brian thank you so much for having me today. I thought it's been. It's been a few messages back and forth but we made it happening. I'm excited to be here. This is so cool. As as you and i were talking a little bit before we got started whenever we have somebody as connected to people in culture and some of these tangential roles associated with with human resources. Our audience eats it up. Because this is the information we want. So thank you so much for jumping on. You're welcome you're welcome in. It's so cool. The technology that we have these days. We've we have all lead into technology whether we wanted to or not this year Just due to the pandemic. it's been a good. It's been good. I would say challenge but also a continuous learning moment. It's so true like we've become very accustomed to the video world because our companies actually remote based anyway. So i'm in philadelphia. We have staff in canada oregon and phoenix. And we've always been that way so we've been very used to this remote world but so many people this year have been forced to learn it and that really applies actually to the hiring world that we're talking about so much so let's just go there since we're already talking about it. Still video interviews of become a huge trend and that is a anxiety inducing thing for a lot of people what do you see what kind of the best practices. What are the important things that people should be kind of learning and getting comfortable with as we do this great so i think this is good. News for me could be bad news for others. Video interviews are here to stay. Yeah i do not see them. Going away I think in many ways they have a lot of upside in that can be related to the potential for saving money Potential for creating a more object to interview Framework but also the side time sakes so you know my first experience with doing the video interview. I'm currently in grass. Who and i apply for this grant. A scholarship opportunity in part of it was to do an interview. And i'm like okay. You know phone interview i was. I was comfortable with that. And then they sent me the video interview. And i was like wait a minute like you know i do interviews all the time but i had to get comfortable looking at myself in a camera and knowing that i had one take And so that that really stands out to me..

"The work in sports podcast. Did you ever say a word over and over again so that it becomes common in your mind but if you take a moment and really think about it. It's arbitrary and weird. Take the word spoon for example. Yes i know. This is a strange. Start to a podcast intro. But you should know that about me by now so stick with me guy. We all know what a spoon is is. But when you say it a bunch of time you start to realize that's a weird word who the heck came up with calling as goofy thing. You eat with a spoon spoon. We normalize these things in our brain. The more we say them or experienced them we become desensitized over time to their uniqueness and just accept them for what they are. We don't often challenge what has become normal spoon not to go too far down this rabbit hole but spoon is germanic origins meaning chip of wood. Which really doesn't help the conversation at all right. Do have a point here. Let's get back on track with spin this forward to this conversation and throw another freeze out at you. Human resources think about it for second. It's kinda cold. Isn't it objectified. Maybe just a little bit. People are people not just resources to be managed. You hear human resources. And you're you're used to saying it all the time. Now you're used to part of a function of an organization if you take a second to think about it. It kind of sounds like hi. i'm jane. I managed the human assets. John over there manage the material resources and and bill manages the software stuff. It's kinda cold right. It's like just a asset or commodity versus. You know a person and yet the human resources departments like we. We talk about this. I'm saying it's cold but like the human resources departments of every organization are the people that care the most about the employees. These are the living breathing hearts and souls of organization but their title and their sector of the industry. I don't know kinda sounds menacing and away when you really think about it with a fresh set of eyes and ears smarter people than me. I think have started to feel the same way. I've seen more and more titles start to break away from straight up human resources and break towards something more akin to chief people officer or people and culture or you know whatever the voice of the people. There's nothing wrong with human resources. I'm not making a big deal about it. i'm not getting upset over it. Not staging a walkout. There's no big problem here. I sometimes like to question some of the things we start to accept as normal if you watch a movie from the eighties. You'll see people smoking at their work desk or on airplanes and that seems so crazy now but it was totally normal for a while until someone said. Hey maybe we should do this a little bit differently again. I'm not conflating. Human resources with smoking on a plane. But i just find myself enamored with norms and accepted behaviors in terms. That when you really think about them or a little bit out of place which brings me to. Today's guest john ferguson.
