"This is all of it. And it is time for Kate has a plan Every Tuesday. We catch up with w. N. Y c planning editor Kate Hinds to get a handle on what the newsroom has covered is covering and we'll be covering. In the future. And of course, Bird news. Hi, Kate. Hi, Alison. So Congress by laughing Bird News is now part of the weekly Roundup. Oh, always always so Congress finally passed the stimulus bill. How is it going to help New Yorkers? Well, you know, New Yorkers get another another bite of the apple that was similar to the one that was passed earlier in the year, you know, $300 weekly unemployment compensation supplement. $600 for individuals. You know, this is the $9 billion in direct cash payments to New York State residents. These are people making under a certain amount of money. They get the $600 check in the mail like this up here. Running up to $75,000. Then there's a whole bunch of other money Sprinkles and you know it. Some institutions get money like the D A. Which is facing, you know a huge deficit. They get $4 billion. Which you know, it's like advocates really group four billion down $8 billion to go. There's money for vaccine testing and tracing plenty and emergency rental assistance money and see Amanda met disaster relief funding. So It was a fair amount of money, but a lot of people are already saying it doesn't go far enough. I'm seeing 22 million for LaGuardia. For the airport. Yeah. The airports are getting 2.7 million for John F. Kennedy Airport. Wow. It's just I'm just reading off of a list. I haven't like delved in tow everything that that is on this list and what it means. And this is gonna be fodder for reporting for weeks and weeks. Let me tell you Because I only want what large sums of money are past. It's always a challenge to find out how that money gets spent and who really benefits. Governor, the governor and the mayor of the city are in agreement on one thing, they believe the feds have not been helpful. Is there anything in this package that you think will provide real relief? For struggling businesses. Well, you know what This depends on what kind of business you have. In general. This provides another shot for businesses at the page Paycheck protection program money, these air grants or loans administered by the small business. Castration on when it was first passed. You know, everyone was like this is just a one shot deal. You're not allowed to, you know, do this again. You can't do it again, and now it looks like you can do it again. But a lot of business. So you're saying, you know, this doesn't go far enough, You know, along and I'm not gonna make me whole and especially when we don't You know there's light at the end of the tunnel with the vaccines, but it's It's not enough. Remember early on in the pandemic. We covered the Save Our stages Act. There seems to be some money in here for independent venues and theaters. Where does it stand? Yeah, that got that was included as part of this, and it's $15 billion that allows performance venues like small into stages Comedy club also to apply for grants from the small Business Administration to cover six months of payroll and costs like rent, utilities and maintenance. Because you know, we've been taking in a little bit too. This one. What it doesn't look like this does is provide funding pride of the paycheck protection program money for sort of like the chain of businesses that keep Broadway float like the costumers and, you know, independent, small family run businesses that help You know, provide the backbone of Broadway stage. We're so we're taking a look at that closely, but it does directly seem to help performance venues. My guess is Kate Hinds, w N Y. C is planning editor. It's Kate has a plan. All right, So we've all heard this news about a potential Vira mutating of the virus in the U. K. What does that actually mean for us? It here in New York? Well, we don't know. I mean, there's a lot of concern about it. Uh, Governor Cuomo has been, you know, banging the band the band wagon about like we need to be screening travelers. We need to watch people were coming in from London in Europe. Basically what we know is, you know, it appears that the UK has a variant of the virus that appears to be more contagious. It seems very likely that if such a thing exists In the UK and has existed for a while. That already be here, and that's something that Dr Anthony Fauci said Thea other day it's probably here. But Governor Cuomo said today um That the state is starting to look for it and had done like some, like a random sampling of positive covert test something like 4000 tests. And it has not yet found that variant here, but they're mounting. You know, a much stronger effort in which the State Department health lab is going to be looking at hospitals across state. And going to them to test for the variance. So it's gonna be a much larger testing effort here in New York to see if it exists. You know, Cuomo sort of hasn't answered the question. Like well when we find it when it's here, and we get the positive touch what we Diogo I mean, I think that it because the much more aggressive test and trace My method of testing Tracie effort, then you know, we're we're seeing now We're really gonna be motivated to find it, But I don't think anyone really thinks it's not here. You know, this is probably here. It will be soon. Let's go to talk about schools. The mayor. The chancellor announced big changes for middle school and high school admissions, which has one producer. My staff is described as the hunger Games for parents and 5th and 8th graders. So what is the new policy and what's been the reaction? Yeah, This is really, basically, you know that they're dropping screens for the middle schools that screen you know, now something like $45.40 percent. I think 45% of New York City's public middle schools have some sort of screening policy, which means they're looking at your grades by looking at your test scores. You're absent year. New Year's the number of days you've been absent or late for the year. That's dropped that is gone for the next admissions cycle. It's now going to a lottery system, which is huge. You know, I can't overstate how significant this is. Um Hey, I think it's going to be a similar to the old way in which you know you still list your choices of schools. But then it's It's a lottery, you know, gone or the God this year are the days in which it's kind of like this match system in which you know you really hope that little school you want to put you on their list, and then the city matches you based on your list. It's really like I want to enter this lottery. So also the other thing that is really big is the end of district priority. Um, some schools, you know, like in Manhattan. It's district to this is a district that stretches from the Upper East Side to downtown that has A number of, you know, high performing sought after schools that they have prioritized admissions for District two kids, which means that a lot of these schools are not very diverse because certainly on every side..

"Tharoor avenues, Mark what you got. Well, as I'm sure everybody is aware now on Friday afternoon. The president decided that it was time to reopen. The government we have a three week extension here to allow congress to negotiate some type of of agreement. And of course, this gets the the airports back to normal and things of that sort I flew out of Newark on Saturday morning yesterday morning and spoke to some TSA folks there they indicated that they're call outright. Which is the the employees calling sick rate which had been at nine percent. The previous Saturday was back somewhere between three and four percent. Which is what they would said would be normal for Saturday. So it didn't take even twenty four hours, but thanks to get back to normal. And of course, the thing that ultimately caused the quick. End to the shutdown was the fact that on Friday, there were staffing shortages have air traffic controllers at a northeast. Air traffic control station here which handles among other airports. Philadelphia LaGuardia Newark, so it immediately caused a ground stop at LaGuardia, which means a ground stop means that no planes take off for the airport and no planes, leave the ground at the airport and Newark and Philadelphia were also impacted and as we speculated Tom last Sunday when we had our friends sit in jail from the TSA on as we speculated at the moment that this really got into the control tower or into the security situation or something like that. We we suspected it would bring things to a fairly quick close. And that's exactly what happened. It it. Shut down the whole down the shutdown within hours, of course, this is only a three week extension. So we don't know what will happen at the end of those three weeks at least for now, we have a little bit of of certainty when it comes to travel, and I think we also know something Tom that we. Suspected before. And that was that the air traffic control system can only take so much stress and strain. And when people started to call in sick and big numbers. Why that was pretty much the end of the game. There you go at that. That always gets people's attention. Speaking of things that are connected to the government shutdown that have to do with flying. If you thought that you were going to fly out of Paine field north of Seattle starting February the eleventh, which is what was scheduled with Alaska air or United. And fortunately, that's not going to happen. The shutdown the with the FAA being hobbled by the shutdown February eleventh date has been pushed back now they hope that flights will launch out of Paine field, which of course, is where Boeing is a north of Seattle sometime between March fourth and twelfth Southwest Airlines to of course, was impacted by the FAA inaction during the shutdown. It had planned to launch flights from Hawaii from the west coast that Shirley now is not going to happen in the first quarter. One would hope that it might happen. South west might take a shot at trying to get some planes in the sky to Hawaii by this by spring. If they don't then industry speculation is that they will wait for the summer because one of the slowest times for folks to fly to Hawaii is between spring break and summer vacation. So it it's kind of questionable as to whether or not they would try to launch something. They're speaking of Southwest Airlines. They are ending flights to Mexico City, which they just started a couple three years ago, not all Mexico destinations. But just Mexico City. Flights are going to end in the next few weeks. Thomas. Are you a Popeye's chicken fan? You know? Yeah. I kinda liked Popeye's chicken. I they make some some good little chicken nuggets. Yeah. I'm kind of I kind of like their popcorn shrimp. Well, Popeye's at the Philadelphia international airport has launched a promotion that gives its customers. If you ask clear chicken to go, get your chicken in an emotional support chicken container. And it looks like a chicken to be able to. Yes, absolutely to be able to take on the airplane with you. It's it's a Popeye's says it's been approved for customers to bring aboard all major carriers. The chicken provides comfort and nourishment during stressful air travel, very clever, then they went on to add unlike other chicken, it's marinated in rural Louisiana spices for twelve hours and must be permitted to fly without restriction a little bit of a commercial there. But if you're flying through Philadelphia, you can get your own support chicken, you know, sometimes Tom win when celebrities fly they try to you know, they they they do the disguise thing. Or they tried to kind of hunker down. You know with the hoodie and a hat and stuff like that. Seems as though Leonardo DiCaprio tried. This was flying through John F Kennedy airport last week with his girlfriend and happened to be flying commercial. And so gets up the TSA apparently. And there's a little I have a video of this. And I didn't put it online because you can't really see enough from the video. But anyway, Leonardo is is wearing Leo is wearing a hoodie and got his baseball cap pulled way down and stuff. You can't really tell it's him. Well, the TSA folks said, dude. Have to see that the guy underneath that hoodie matches the people in the guy in the picture on the airplane. Uh-huh. Yeah. The government shutdown one more government shutdown story here. United Airlines announced Friday morning before the president announced that the shutdown was over Friday afternoon that they would have they would donate a million dollars to a campaign called Feeding America the shutdown response fund. Feeding America is a national food closet charity, and they had created a special response fund for families for getting food to families of federal employees who didn't receive paychecks during the shutdown that would have included TSA in homeland security employees. United Airlines has gone ahead and made the donation anyway. Because as they have pointed out these folks don't have their paychecks yet. And so they are still in great need of in some cases of immediate assistance and all of that back pay and stuff is not gonna come for a while. And if you're somebody who is living paycheck to paycheck. So anyway, congratulations to United Airlines for adding their name to the list of. Companies that responded to help out folks get through that little tough spat there, and hopefully we will not have to go through this again in three weeks, Tom. I just good grief. I can't imagine that we like to have a federal job. And and you know, think wow. I wonder what's going to happen three weeks from now. Yeah. You know? I it's got to be tough. And know like most people you -ticipant, it's gonna happen. So you don't really stock away. You know, a couple of months salary, or whatever let's hope for the best. Yeah. That's that's I'm I'm listen. I'm hearing you my friend, and that is your travel news for today, and we are the travel guys and again, go to travel guys radio dot com.
