"Surprisingly they were pretty calm and pretty alert. In Gaithersburg, able to talk small talk with us. John dome in WTO, the news. Some deadly weather in the south, a tornado slicing through a community near Montgomery, Alabama last night, killing two people. It ripped the roof from an apartment complex and forced at least 15 families from their homes. The roof was just peeled away by the storms that swept through this area, all those apartments are exposed. I have been able to speak with a few people who are walking around this morning who tell me that they believe everybody was able to make it out okay. That is CBS national correspondent Manuel bahr kz, the storm, one of a series of tornadoes that swept through Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi, thousands were left without power. A potential breakthrough today for the millions of Americans affected by Alzheimer's disease. An experimental antibody treatment developed by Biogen and its Japanese partner has been shown to slow down the progression of cognitive decline in patients. CBS medical contributor doctor David agus tells us about these new findings. In this trial, half got placebo and half got an antibody infused every two weeks. And what it showed is that nobody improved, but the rate of decline slightly decreased in the people who got the antibody treatment, but a cost of significant side effects, including brain bleed and brain swelling in the individuals who got the treatment. And so minor benefit, so small that most of the doctors and the patients or their families couldn't really tell that the rate of decline had changed. But there was that real benefit there. So a glimmer of hope, but certainly not going to change the course of this disease in a big schema. The Food and Drug Administration expected to decide whether to approve that new drug by early January. It's 1236. "Explosion. In Gaithersburg, John dome in WTO P news. I'm Mike Morello. Look, I understand being concerned, but you also have to look at the underlying facts. This week's blast as many people talking about two big apartment building gas explosions in the county in Silver Spring, which Montgomery county executive Mark Eldridge cautions against connecting to the Gaithersburg one. That's because the deadly 2016 blast was caused by a gas regulator and the other explosion this march caused by a worker cutting a gas pipe. Three is too many, but it's also not a widespread problem, particularly when you count that these could be totally three different causes. We still don't know what caused the Gaithersburg blast, Mike Morello, WTO P news. In Ukraine, it was another day of Russian air strikes aimed at energy facilities, the missile and drone attacks continue to knock out electric and gas plants as winter gets closer, at least four people were killed in today's barrage. National security correspondent JJ green tells us Ukraine's president is in no hurry to accept the blame. Ukraine's president says he's not sure what happened in Poland. And until the investigation is complete, he's going to continue to stand by what he's been saying from the beginning. He did say, however, Ukraine has now been admitted to the investigation site and that should hasten along whatever is taking place to make a determination. WTO's JJ green. "12 people, including four children, have been injured in a building explosion there. It was in a residential building and it led to a two alarm fire. Let's go live to the scene WTO's John doman is near quince Orchard boulevard and rabbit road. What can you tell us, John? Yeah, right now I'm looking at where this explosion in this fire happened. And there's just so much destruction. And the people that I've spoken to in the last little while talk about how fast it happened, how loud the explosion was rattling. Their apartments rattling through them, and then it's just a collapsed mess of rubble at this point right now. There are 9 units at the fire department at last where it had not been able to get into at all, which means that at this point everybody in there is unaccounted for. That doesn't, you know, best case scenario you're hoping people are at work or at school when this happened. There were a lot of people actually dropping their kids off at a school right across the street from where this apartment is. But we don't know, I guess, the full extent of all the damage just yet. This is going to be something that is a days long investigation days long mess to clean up here at this point. But it's just, we're also hearing just tales of heroism, people climbing ladders to get people out of upper units that are damaged here. People going into buildings. It's just so much mixed emotion, but right now most of the people out here is much good as they saw happen at that instant now. They're kind of just wrestling with the aftermath and assessing the damage and just there's just a lot of blown minds here at this point. We're engaged in John dome in WTO. John, if you have a second, I want to ask, we're probably very fortunate that at the timing of this maybe folks had, as you mentioned, already headed out to school or to work, but I know you had mentioned earlier and I believe a fire officials were discussing the smell of gas. What more do we know about that? Well, that's something that some of the residents who have been gathered outside here have mentioned they've had issues with the smell of gas that there may have been some repairs here done last week, but it's still too early to really pin this as a gas fire. The fire department did say that gas was feeding the fire when they got here. That will clearly be part of the investigation. You know, when an explosion is big, this one is, you have to think that there may have been some sort of gas involved, but nothing is definitive yet we can't say that for sure at this point. But yeah, that is clearly something that is going to be looked at here. All right, John, thanks so much. John doman on the scene there in Gaithersburg. We're also following developments in the war in Ukraine, NATO, secretary general, and Poland's president, both say there is no indication that a missile which came down in Polish farmland, killing two people, was a deliberate attack by Russia, rather they suspect that it was caused by a Ukrainian air defense system that's intended to counter Russian aerial bombardment. Our own national security correspondent JJ green explains how this will likely affect the war in Ukraine and NATO's obligation. Now what NATO has to do is a part of this article for that Poland asked for yesterday is they have to consult with each other. They have to talk with each other to figure this out because we've been thinking talking and speculating about what would happen if one of those missiles that Russia was launching from the beginnings trade and now we know what it could do. NATO secretary general Jens Stoltenberg is still pointing the finger of blame at Moscow saying it's not Ukraine's fault, Russia bears ultimate responsibility. "To WTO neighbors. Ten 52, we continue. To follow the breaking news out of Montgomery county where there's been a residential building explosion and partial collapse that happened in Gaithersburg. It led to a two alarm fire at a residential area near quince Orchard boulevard and rabbit road. A news conference there has just ended, let's find out what the latest is. We'll go live to the scene now. And we find WTO's John doman. Deb, so what we know so far is that there were 12 people injured so far, 8 people taken to the hospital with injuries that are not considered to be serious or life threatening and includes four adults four kids, two adults, were also taken to the hospital with some really serious injuries and two were treated with here at the scene and they seem to be fine. But we don't know is just how many more people are still unaccounted for. There are 9 apartments that the fire department has not been able to get into just yet. And so we have no idea whether people were inside those units or if they had already left to go to work to school whatever else. So there's still a lot of unknown right now that we do know that this appears to have been started by some sort of a ghastly people talking about smelling gas here earlier this morning. Issues in the past with gas and that runs in line, which is a massive explosion. The fire department saying that they got no 9-1-1 call about a gas leak. "Maryland and Virginia are heading to the polls tomorrow to elect new leaders and make decisions on some important ballot initiatives. We have team coverage now beginning in Maryland where the state is electing a new governor. Republican candidate Dan Cox was in Frederick county holding a rally last night, while tonight President Biden will join Democrat Wes Moore for a get out the vote rally at Bowie state university. Virginia to expand outdoor dining for businesses, potentially into parking lots, sidewalks

"Northern Virginia is expected to enter phase one of recovery tomorrow and restaurants are going to be making some major changes when restrictions begin to lift in Leesburg town council has voted to allow restaurants to term parking lots into outdoor dining area most of the debate was focused on what can be done for downtown restaurants which don't have parking lots the short answer is that we're still working on that during phase one re openings it was made clear closing streets to make room for tables on sidewalks will work we don't know what exactly the guidelines of the in phase two other than the the general Max from gathering limit rises from ten to fifty but even a close in the block of king street from market to allow them would clearly increase more than fifty people so that's going to be problematic so while Leesburg still brainstorming ideas for downtown the options are limited John dome in WTOP
