"Where there's still a bit of traffic. In terms of traffic want you're going to to leave a little bit more time if you're dropping anyone up for that last -minute Thanksgiving, pre -Thanksgiving flight or picking anyone up here on the road seem a little bit congested or perhaps considered Metro as well but everything flowing pretty smoothly here at Reagan National tonight. That's WTOP's Scott Gellman. Tis the season for giving in fact Giving Tuesday is next week on day that you'll be encouraged to help out your favorite charities but maybe it's time to do a little homework before sending in that money. most The important first step is to make sure it's a valid charity and also that it's not a so -called look -alike charity which is trying to convince you it's a more reputable charity with a similar name. And so you want to get very specific again about the organization that you're looking at. Kevin Scaley with Charity Navigator says next look at how the organization operates as the money gets spent wisely. Navigator Charity looks into that. Also some charities really don't have the best governance practices. There are organizations that don't have an independent board of directors, meaning the folks that are actually governing them sometimes are actually paid fees. So you want that separation. And when giving, make sure you're on an official website and never use your debit card, only a credit card. Mike Murillo, WTOP News. A little worldly inspiration for you when it comes to seasoning your Thanksgiving turkey tomorrow. WTOP's John Dolman with that. They don't really do Thanksgiving in Lebanon, but Satinder Vij, the executive chef at a Lilly restaurant on the wharf, says turkey's eaten around Christmas and Easter. If he wants a different flavor, we'll try seasoning the bird with caraway seeds, allspice or coriander. It goes really well with the spices and caraway is like an allspice are the spices which are most used in the Lebanese cooking. For side dishes instead of cranberries, he suggests trying tart berries. We make the stuffing with tart cherries. We make our sauce instead of cranberry sauce. We do a dark cherry sauce at a Lilly on the wharf. John Dolman, WTOP If you plan on taking Metro tomorrow, rail and bus service is on a Sunday schedule for the holiday. It means Metro stations will open at 7 a .m. and trains will run until midnight. Normal Metro access subscription trips are canceled, but if you're a Metro access customer and you need to travel somewhere, you can call and make a separate reservation. The cherry trees at the Tidal Basin are the star of the show in late March or April. Somebody's been showing interest in cherry those trees more recently, though. This morning after years of wondering where the next FBI headquarters will be, we now have an answer at WTOP for you. Greenbelt, Maryland. We are just really, really pleased. Prince George's County Executive Angela Also -Brooks, who along with many other Maryland lawmakers call this an historic decision. It will bring about not only the additional jobs, but we're expecting to see as well that there will be huge industries that develop around the FBI headquarters. The two other possible sites were Landover and Springfield, Virginia. In recent months, Virginia lawmakers criticized the scoring process for the sites. When we talked about equity, they started talking about counting heads, how many black or brown people live in a jurisdiction. We wanted to be this clear that was not about diversity. She says it was about hundreds of billions of dollars less being spent in Maryland on government facilities compared to Virginia. The GSA also says it chose Greenbelt because it'll cost less to build the new facility and it had better transportation access. Mike Murillo, WTOP News. WTOP at 405 Thursday. Maryland officials approving the settlement now on Wednesday this week to resolve all claims at a lawsuit filed by the family of 19 year old Anton Black. That man black you might remember died during a struggle with police officers locally on Maryland's eastern shore back in 2018. In their federal lawsuit in this case, Black's family accused police of using excessive force on him that day after they chased him and then tried to restrain him outside the family's home in Greensboro. The settlement requires the Maryland office of the chief medical examiner to put policies into place that will, for the first time actually, outline how medical examiners handle deaths in police custody and how transparent they are about the results. We're following breaking developments to this afternoon as the chair of the D.C. council says he is withdrawing a new crime bill that could be overturned by the U.S. Senate in a disapproval resolution as soon as this week. But it's likely that a Senate vote will still take place. We hear that from WTO's Mitchell Miller. Today on the hill. Council chair film mendelsohn has written a letter to the Senate letting lawmakers know he wants to pull the criminal reform measure, his action comes just days ahead of a scheduled vote, and the likelihood that D.C. bill would be rescinded. This is not about the substance of the bill itself. This is about using the district for national political purposes. Republicans have been sharply critical of the measure, which would lighten mandatory penalties for several violent crimes. And some Democrats have indicated they join them in voting to block the bill. Mendelssohn himself acknowledges his withdrawal of the bill is unprecedented and it's still possible the Senate vote could go forward. On Capitol Hill, Mitchell Miller WTO, B news. "You didn't know, is Valentine's Day, and that means some couples might be apologizing for a wandering eye or worse. While others are trying to repair the damage, from what you can describe as financial infidelity these days, a survey out to this week from bankrate finds that 23% of all Americans in relationships are keeping a money related secret from their significant other. And 39% have been financially unfaithful. That means they have a secret credit card or checking account, say, or even worse, some debt or spending that they're keeping secret. CBS News business analyst Jill schlesinger talked with our John dolman about this and what you can do. I am so sorry to bring this up the day before Valentine's Day. So I'm going to apologize, but there is a larger and lofty goal here. Look, what brings us up is a lot of different things. A lot of people feel out of control and different aspects of their lives, and they use money to kind of express that. And sometimes that out of control part can be financially related, but it can be other things too. And you know what is really weird about money is that it can be so emotional, meaning that listen, we get so emotional about so many things and money is just one of those things and we express a lot of our emotions around money because money's tangible. So here is my hope for today the day before Valentine's Day is that you kind of look at this situation and say, okay, this is like anything else in life. We've got to communicate. And how do we create a communication system around money that's not fraught? And the way you do that is you set aside some time. Don't do it tomorrow night. But you set aside some time as a couple to discuss where you are financially and if you've never done this, it just means like, well, let's have a list of what we own. Let's have a list of what we owe. And let's look at our spending. And let's kind of fess up. We don't have to go crazy. You don't have to judge it in that moment. You can just actually have some ground rules. We just tracking the information. And that way we can make better decisions going forward. Now, these sorts of conversations can be fraught with emotion and anger and all the distrust that we've been talking about. Is this something that a couples therapists can help you out with or should you go see a financial planner? How do you sort of get that extra help that you might need? Well, I think if it's every time you try to sit down, you just can't do it. There's two ways to approach it. One is just say, let me go to a certified financial planner or a CPA who does financial planning, who can really be almost like the objective third party. Who can really mirror back to you and say, hey, look, you say you want to send your kids to college, you say you want to retire. This is what the game plan looks like. Can you both sign on to it? And sometimes it is a lot easier when there's a third party there. But if it's really just fighting about control and issues and it devolves into something very different than I do think a therapist can actually be helpful to you as a couple. I mean, when it comes to your money, the problem that we have is that as a couple, you have many joint responsibilities. But a lot of us come into relationships later in life and we want to maintain some separateness. And that's fine. I'm not saying you shouldn't have a separate account. All I'm saying is that you both need to be on the same page so that the separateness is serving something, but also the stuff that you have together is also serving something. And again, communication is key. It's very boring
