"Three sports talk Saturday coming your way right now, making a recording Griswald hanging out with you all morning and into the afternoon. I'm going back to the Western Hotline for my final guest of the afternoon. It's Pete Jensen. He's a senior. Fantasy editor over at NHL Network Pete First time, Long time. Just kidding. It's been a long time. No man, it's good. Oh, it's good to have young. Um, Unfortunately, I wish it was under more positive circumstances. But we'll talk about the rest of the league and the playoffs that are about to get underway here. But yeah, I'm at first were gonna rip offs and scabs and talk about the sabers. Yeah. I mean, it's tough because you see what went on in the division outside of Buffalo, right? You saw like the Rangers have a really good season, missed the playoffs because they drew the tough straw and played in a division with Couple other jug or not, So even like with the Flyers going off the rails, Rangers were unable to make the playoffs. Nor where the sabers then the Rangers go ahead and pretty much blow up most of the organization from the leadership standpoint. With Gordon and John Davidson gone and the coach David Quinn, and then you look at Buffalo, like the expectations were also high, but it's just It's crazy like how the league has reacted to just this shortened season and things like that. But clearly, Buffalo has some issues and the biggest one is the Jack Eichel situation, which is just Such a big topic for us fantasy wise because he's a top 15 player in the league, you know, but I mean, if he's not happy there, if if they have to move on, it's just like it's an unfortunate thing for all the fans and buffalo that they couldn't Seymour out of Michael Yeah, I think maybe the worst part about it. Pete is just the continued narrative that oval trade him to the to the kings. But don't even mention by fields name don't even do it. Don't always go into the Rangers Will. You can't even talk cock. Oh, so it's like to me. How can you have these conversations around moving Jack Eichel when you can't even mention the team's top prospect, coming back and return and and what does that say to you about the state of the rest of the league and how they're viewing this Jack Eichel situation does. Guess. Does it speak to how dire the situation here in Buffalo is that even though they still have the leverage of right now, this year, this is the sabers have the most leverage right now heading into the season with the no trade clause kicking in next offseason. So does it say more about the state of the franchise? That there is still this view that even though they hold the cards in terms of financial and note movement clause that they're still being talked about is well, they're not getting anyone's top one or two prospects. I mean, what does that say about the state of this franchise and the leverage that they have in any Jack Eichel trade? Well, the state of play of the whole league right now. It's tough because you know it's during the pandemic. Luckily, they were able to play the season. But you know, a lot of these teams didn't have any fans for most of the season and Another cap is flat and their teams out there that are on the custom contention. Some that air in the playoffs that would love to add and Michael and, you know, I mentioned the Rangers obviously, like Seem like Montreal or Minnesota that are in the playoffs clearly need on elite center on the roster. But in order to do so, like you're you're strapped in terms of your cap. Constraints and stuff like that, so and then you have some top prospects. But you know these teams they're not like The sabers are not in the driver's seat, because it's kind of a falling out if they if they do have betrayed him, you know, it's not like we're these teams can they all feel well? Feel free to give up cold Caufield for? You know, like, why would they? Why would they offer them? It's gonna be the leverage is not Really in Buffalo's end. Unfortunately, so even though I kal is a proven, you know, top flight player in the league, so that's what's going to be. I'm sure like some of the conversations will be. It's gonna be really tough, you know? I think they're going to be able to get a lot back in return for a player of Michael's caliber, but It's unfortunate like this injury this year is a serious one, right if it was like a neck injury, and then you know throughout his Buffalo career, it's like coaching change after coaching change and You know you don't pin all of that on Jack Eichel, but especially, you know, the captain of the team past couple years. It's you know, it's been more and more on him, the more and more that it happens. So that's just something that follows the player. As he has You know progress in his career. Unfortunately, so the numbers speak for themselves, but there's a lot more attached to this situation clearly, and I think I mean, obviously, the same conversation is likely being had about Sam Reinhart, who's coming off of Ah. By the way, a top 10 scoring season in the league. Maybe his most consistent start to finish campaign We've seen from Sam Reinhart, and I think what it speaks to Pete is how long it can take in this league for young players to find their game and hit their ceiling, and it's what makes it so disappointing that you know, you have finally got to a point where Sam Reinhart's playing his best hockey. You have Jack Eichel, who sort of entering into that prime of his career, and now we're talking about them moving on from them before you get to actually reap the benefits off those dry Have pecs and I think you know the same conversation will eventually be had about Rasmus Darlene, who I think had a really nice turnaround under Don Coronado compared to the system he was playing in with Ralph Krueger. But you know, you look at this team and you say to yourself. It feels P Taylor wise or not far, and I was talking about this with Joe. You're done earlier here, and we talked about how There's this disconnect in the term Byeon, which has been used a lot by Kevin Adams, and by the previous coaching staff in this current one, where you have this talent and Taylor halls perfect example of this Taylor Hall scores, two goals and whatever it is 40 games here in Buffalo 35 games and he goes, he goes and scores five in the 1st 10 games when he's in Boston, I think buy in is an interesting way to basically say. I don't know. Try hard play your best game and like like, what is it about this team, But they can't get their best players or really talented players to buy into what they're trying to do on the ice and doesn't speak to him or organizational problem, Or is this strictly They didn't have the right coach. Maybe they do now and maybe that it's a simple is just the coach in the scheme. The coach is a huge part of it right. I mean, the night and day turn around when they're in the midst of that long losing streak, and they fired through there and then the way they played down the stretch was like really encouraging. And like, I mean, Ryan hard played his best hockey down the stretch for sure. And you saw middle stature step of. I mean middle stead last year's like in the H..

"And yet John Davidson today, Black lives matter is an organization is nominated for a Nobel Peace prize when they were Part and parcel to some of the deadliest and most destructive riots we've seen in this country in generations, and the entire media is on board with black lives matter. In fact, this spring and summer when we were having unprecedented once in a generation riots and looting cities, entire city blocks being burnt down. Dozens of people killed The media started running pieces about like, Oh, do we really want to use the word looting? Do we really want to use the word riding A P came out with something cautioning use of the word riot. So when it's on their side, the left is very concerned about the language that we're using. But when the target is people on the right, well, we're going to use the most extreme, hyperbolic, hysterical. Unmoored from reality language we can think of, and so it only goes one way. It only goes one way and that's what we need. We need to call it out and we and we need to put a stop to it. Amen and keep calling it outside because it's never gonna go away. And yes, the only time they use the word riot over the summer was in quoting Martin Luther King out of context, saying that the riot is the voice of the unheard. Um but and of course that is then used to justify any violence. You could use that to justify the violence of January 6 that The problem here. Exactly Exactly. And part of the problem is that some people on the right a small section of radicalized people on the right have decided to do just that day after months and months of writing and looting, they said. Well, hey, let's go to the capital and right for our cause. That's right now that that's right, That's right. We're gonna leave it there. John Davidson. Let's Let's Don't be a stranger. Let's have you back, please on a regular basis, because I really do appreciate your writing. Thank you said Love to come back. Thanks. Thanks for having 4 47. "Don't davidson is an editor at the federal list. He's written an article in the federalist which is a good read. I always come in the federalist i think they do good work entitled five big things we learned about our elites in twenty twenty and i wanna take them one by one but john. Did you learn these thing did. Did learning these things did these people exposing themselves as they did in any way actually surprised you not at all. I think that these were things. Everyone kind of knew These were things that we could see. Contributing to trump's election in two thousand sixteen the corruption of our elites in the corruption of our institution institutions public life but we certainly got confirmation in ways And and i think that's what twenty twenty brought us. Was these really dramatic. Instances where our worst fears and suspicions about arby's were confirmed time and time again. Let's take them one by one number one. Democrats don't care about science or religious liberty. let's start with the democrats. Don't care about science. What made you come to that conclusion over and over. We've heard democratic governors and mayors saying that we have to follow the science on code and that we're going to let the scientists lead us and we're gonna make all our decisions based on science and over the month as the year unfolded as the pandemic unfolded. We saw time and again mayors and county health officials and governors making decisions really big important decisions about lockdown stay. The weren't based on the science all wasn't based on anything In fact one judge in california called out the county health officials in los angeles saying your order to your clothes. Outdoor dining isn't based on anything. There's no data. There's no science behind it at all. So democrats don't care about science. They say they do but when it actually comes down to making policy. They don't use science to justify the policies that they want to put forth democrats. You know what. I find interesting. John is the rigorous pursuit of truth. That that the scientific method gives us is is. There is truth and honesty to two plus two four. there is truth and honesty to gravity right. these are these are principles or rules. They're immutable they do not change. They will always be there before us. And after us in this idea that questioning opinions of supposed scientist or public. Health officials was somehow taboo. Was somehow dangerous. That is to me more frightening than the fact that these people don't respect science at they don't respect the inputs to coming to conclusions and we saw that on full display. Yeah that's right that's right. I i think the idea that you question the experts Like there are some Clerical class that has a lock on truth and that everything they say is like an oracle coming from. The heavens is really disturbing the the fact that that we treat Health officials and bureaucrats and elected officials as though They their orders and their rules. Come from on high is just not true. And the pandemic exposed that best example our top of mine example. You say democrats don't care about science or religious liberty. What was the case that really in your mind. Voters in americans should look at and say especially people of faith and say look what happened here. The two most high profile cases where when the supreme court struck down governor andrew. Cuomo of new york's order that churches and houses of religious worship should have different standards For opening than Other businesses and then they did the same thing with california governor gavin newsom orders it also discriminated against houses of worship those two things descried and capture sort of elites prejudice against both religious liberty and the complete disregard For science and data. th those orders weren't based on anything other than Discrimination against people if they weren't based on science a data that showed going to socially distanced church service puts you at greater risk than packing into a lowe's home depot. They were just based on the idea that we're gonna discriminaga- discriminate against religion The supreme court called him out on it both times and interestingly the media reframed that discussion to say well that ruling doesn't matter because he's rescinded the order. No no it was important to have the ruling because whether it's in effect for an hour a week a month or forever it's wrong as written not sufficiently narrowly tailored without a real public policy and science behind it. That was an important statement. And i hope that people of faith will will not forget that. I hope it will make a difference in in In georgia where democrats are going to are going to act in lockstep. Because that's what they do you have a prediction there. I think that we haven't seen any change from what we saw. In november with regard to the security and of our elections and the confidence that people can have that the laws that we have on the books. We'll be followed and that the rules that we have are counting absentee ballots for example will be followed and that the the the processes that we have in place to prevent people from voting twice or out of state residents in will be enforced. We didn't see a lot of that. in november. We saw a lot of rules being ignored and laws being broken. And unfortunately we we have to get that six because people have to have confidence in our elections. And i don't know that we're going to have much more success. This time around than we did in november in terms of people having confidence and they leave the democrats will cheat. I believe that there are not secure processes in place to ensure that that when people cheat they get caught. Do you think there are enough. High placed republicans willing to overturn an election. If in fact it is clear. Democrats cheated or willing to dig in and determine whether they cheated are. Do you think they'll do what they've already which is looked the other way and say well. Let's be gracious losers. Yeah i think the latter. I know i don't think there's enough democrats Or i should say republicans that are willing to to dig in and call for a commission and really look at this in a series way which is too bad. Because as i say you have to. People have to have confidence in in the elections. And it's possible to do that. In a credible and serious way. There are states that have mass mail in voting. That secure look at florida Florida elections nobody disputes the result of florida elections. And they know the results right way and yet. This is the state with a really diverse population two time zones millions and millions of people large population and they have large numbers of belan voting. But they do. It is secure way. So that people have confidence as other the integrity john donald davidson come back and see us..

Contrary specially, like that was milk sky like they kind of all divvy up different guys on the roster and I'm really curious to see how milkin responsiveness yeah I agree it should be interesting I think Malcolm still remains. I watched the whole thing I gotTa tell you. It was like watching a Netflix series like every single interview is compelling a new a new story Kyle you spit hot fire about how criticism of Mitch Barter is the most idiotic take you could hear around these parts. Here's here's my my second spiel on the on the leafs their remind me of the. pre-crisis capitals remind me of team that should the corps should be kept together to grow together, learn together figure out the playoffs thing together. But the key is an Shanahan kind of reference this. The key is you've got to bring in ringers from outside the organization that can provide grit and that either play the style in which you need to win in the postseason or have actually one of the postseason look no further than the way Tampa Bay responded to getting out work by the blue jackets last year. Barclay good ro Blake Coleman like these are the guys that now fill out the rest that let lineup and those are the guys that are going to propel them to probab- probably greater heights in the playoffs and they mad last season. And the leafs don't have. Hardly any of those guys imported from elsewhere look at the capital's roster when they won Lars Eller. devante Smith Pelly Miskin in. Or pick being the greatest example like you've got a import these guys all due respect to Jake Muslim think kind of guy but you've got to import those guys. But it's going to Beijing to see what happens in Florida and Eric Joyce who was the longtime assistant GM assumed soon to be groomed to take over to dot take over initially it looks like they want to go outside the organization have somebody come in and re evaluate what's gone wrong. Yeah. Did have talent had a very long tenure there. But what he did last summer and just spending money as bandaids for problems like that's exactly what they don't want to do and they need a new fresh set of eyes to come in and really take stock and I do think this is a team that's going to start spending a little less money and it's you know convenient with the pandemic coming the they should. That is specific reason I think they need an outside voice to come in I'm just like a consultant and take stock of what's going on. Dateline Buffalo. SABRES FDA new new sweaters I hate saying New Jersey's because it makes me think of New Jersey. The sabers have sweaters. They changed their their kits like once every three years seemingly. These are straight fire like they're great looking jerseys but I mean. I just I if you if you look at the last fifteen years or maybe twenty years of the Buffalo Sabres, it is astonishing. How many different jerseys they've sold their fans like I mean people in. Buffalo A I don't know how much disposable income you have but how much of it has been committed to buying all these dopey jerseys they keep on making. But they're nice. They keep upgrading right? They've clearly got better yet if your baseline is the buffs slug and then you make that up. "You know there are opportunities for you to cross through like a pathway in the bubble and you can kind of see sometimes even though they they have kind of tarps over the fencing. You can still kinda see through their the pathways that either players or personnel take So it is kind of. Set Up I. Think you see like people were kind of especially early Kinda gravitating towards the bubble trying to see if they could catch his of what's going on since it really is right in the middle of downtown Evanston I, wanted to ask you for that because it's one of the things and fascinated by lake you have these two hockey med cities in Edmonton and Toronto, and you have what's basically a bunch of all star teams that are just like in the middle of these cities and they're staying there and yet they're like in a dome. Kind Kinda like you know where they are and you know where they're going and everything, but they're not leaving dome right. So what was that like like? Did you see people like autograph hounds and people like around the perimeter? Players attention like what? What was that like on the outside of the bubble looking in. I didn't, but I did see while I still was in quarantine and obviously on the bubble had opened like you know players in teams had arrived there worth fans that were going down there. I think just try to catch a glimpse and I think it was tough for them initially especially, because you know everything was so secure and it was the first few days. So maybe people weren't as mobile in the bubble because there were those I think the first five days players pretty much had to stick with their teams go to practice and then go back to their room but I, think as. You know things kind of starting. You know player got to be more mobile and get around the bubbles I'm you could probably catch more glimpses I did what I did notice more often was team it like the charter buses especially I think more early on when they were taking, you know teams to practice which the practice was twenty five minutes away from downtown So you would see like bosses and it would say either NHL or have like a a logo of the teams that it would be transporting I saw bosses, kind of more frequently then actually seeing kind of players milling around but. You're right I. Think it was you know for me especially if felt kind of because I'm from Edmonton this is where I had my introduction to the sport and where I sell love with the game and it turned into my career and to have it here in this type of steady. That is just you know like you said crazy for hockey the fans love it. I. Do remember to ahead of the very first game in the bubble which was edited Chicago like Spin on the street you know they parked their vehicle that had attacked owed and. Logos flags, and just you know that would be normal probably for a game fan streaming into the arena, and there's that excitement and energy, and here's just you know people just now standing on street corners doing it 'cause they can't get in and I'm still I think early on, you still felt that buzz from the city even though fan from being led in. I want to switch gear to the wild. As I mentioned, they didn't even make it to the first round. There was the qualification round but listening to Bill Garin Talk his exit interview. He says there are things need to change with this organization. He inherited a roster that we know is old and slow, and it's brought by some old contracts. They do get real capris off next year but there's a lot of uncertainty we don't know. WHO's GONNA come back? What are you expecting the summer? Do you think that this is the summer where there are some big shakeups and big trades What do you think's GonNa? Happen. I wouldn't be surprised because I think that's the tone that Bill Garin has set and you know you're right. He hasn't even been on the job for year like he was hired at the end of August and that was such a really short runway for him to try to effect any change to this roster before training camp and essentially you know he didn't he did signed jeered purge into that long term contract extension but really I mean he didn't you know truly change this roster until the Jason Ducker trade to Pittsburgh and February, and I think that trade and then the ensuing decision to fire boost. In mid-february later than we're used to seeing, he's not afraid to kind of shake things up and I and I think now with more opportunity, a wider window to actually change this team even though it's still you know not a typical off season You know he kind of acknowledged the landscape is kind of difficult to handicap right now So that may play a role. You know he's right and that's why. He was brought in to to to affect change. This isn't the roster that he picked. It's what he inherited. So I wouldn't be surprised if he starts to make some decisions that you know adjust the look that we're used to seeing for this wild team part of that obviously could be Meka Koivu he decides to retire at least retired from the NHL but you know besides caprice offs addition like he mentioned. This team still obviously looks like it needs help you help upfront needs to. goaltending and I think you know the tone that bill is set is that you know he's the guy who's not going to be afraid to make those types of moves to incite improvement in the areas of this team needs if it's going to be that team that long coveted to be in that's the Stanley Cup contender. For, sure one of the things that I found interesting guarantee posts a series comments was talking pretty candidly about the goaltending. How do you think they're gonNA handle that physician next season? Yes, that was a very I think probably the most raw on his take away from how he summed up the season was that he said he was disappointed in the goaltending and then he doesn't see a set higher keeper next season, which is interesting because technically I mean the wild is that in terms of it has to always under contract next season endeavoured Dude Nick and Alex Stay Lock So I think before they really can try to figure out how the competition will shake out they need to decide what to do with Cafo Cabinet and he was there minorly goalie last season. He was the Ahl Goalie of the year certainly didn't look out of place when he made his NFL debut during the season and he had a short abbreviated stint when nick was out so I think they need to really decide if they wanna give him a shot or he's better suited to get more time in the minors But after that, I mean he pretty much said if there's an opportunity to find help, he will explore that and do that and so maybe this is GonNa look completely different than it has been the last few years I. Know We talked to nick before. US comments and he's expecting to come back and be the type of goal. Get that number one job who will be the one to start the majority of games but Now the question is, will he get that chance? So I know center ice and? Still solidifying the top line up the middle is important but I think goaltending is way up there too and you know that's GonNa be something to watch the wild feels they can find someone to go out and you know help either internally maybe cabinet or somebody else in the trademark of free agency. I listened to listeners of this podcast. Probably think I'm obsessed with Capri off and that's right. I am. So my last question be about him. I've just been fascinated by the courting of him, which spanned three general.

"Hangs got his own way of thinking is talking to his family figuring things out we're figuring things out so it'll get taken care of, but but everything takes its own time. It's there's no set date where he's gotTa, make a decision on what he wants to do or we WANNA do this. So this'll figure itself would after everybody gets together and and think things through. I. Let me let me ask you about that the topic again. You've mentioned a few times that you're still in this build your. Amassed a lot of prospects you got a lot going on for you. has there. Is there any mind to be paid to the idea that with the couple of teams behind you that would anti up pretty big for the first overall pick in? L.. A. And Ottawa. Is there any mind paid potentially trading that pick? You know we we just we just got the. Thing the dust hasn't even settled. The excitement is certainly here. In New York, I know people have They've had a lot of calls downtown about getting season tickets, their way it's been very good that part of the business. I. Think you know I go back to the year. The draft is in Columbus. And We amongst other teams talk to Chicago they had the number one pick. And we we made a significant offer. the Blackhawks led by Dale Talent said, no no, we're going with number. We're sticking with it and that's that. Patrick Kane was a pretty good pick. So these types of things, somebody would have to blow the. Socks shoes everything right off your feet. If you're ever GonNa Change from something like that. So we we're we're excited. We're where we are. We have the number one pick. It's it's a great time for us and we'll just see where everything goes. Now. The presumed number one pick is Alexa leniency who is a winger and he's supposed to be a very good winger but it appears to me that when you guys could really use right now with some demand and center depth, how concerned are you specifically center? Of your depth that just didn't organization is that something that you'll have to find from outside? Or you know I think that Emily with just about every team in the league, they need a Sandra Manure defenseman. It's just it's so hard. I remember the Rangers one in ninety four they have three hall of fame defenseman on that on that. On that Blue Line Brian Leetch and Kevin Lowe and Sergei Zubov. Hard. To Find Centerman really are defined. So would you what would you try to do in this business is build up assets. And when you have good real strong depth with your assets, maybe a deal can be made down the road and I'll go back and Yarbrough Carolina. With Columbus running their club there. And there was a lot of defense and playing in natural. They didn't have Centerman. We had Ryan. Johannesen and they had Steph Jones. So it was a perfect fit for both teams to try to make the deal and sometimes, and that was a hockey trade. Everybody was talking about at that point in time where trades were made because of contracts and budgets and caps, and all that. That was a real hockey trade astral almost one Stanley Cup and right Now Seth Jones, he has a chance to be enormous Norris Trophy winner. He's good. So when you build up your assets gives you a chance and if you build up your winger assets or you're right winger assets or you're your dss something else could come your way because another t may need something that you have. So it's a matter of being patient trying to find out what other teams have and and continue to drive well and build those assets up. Adam Fox really on Dreidel who says now, right Box out a good year for us. He did that was a real good deal with Jeff. Jeff Gordon made to to get him to the organization. He's going to be a terrific player. He's terrific. All right. Let me ask you one final question for me as as team President I think a lot of us are really interested in knowing a bit more about what next season could look like insofar as from a business perspective like we know from hockey business, the caps can be flat the whole thing. What are your? What's your? Current. Expectation, for the possibility of starting the season with fans in the stands at MSG and just overall what the business outlook for a team like the Rangers who obviously in a very different we can send the other team was look like. I think as far as the business plans go the garden They prepare for anything and everything all the time. And Of course, we rely on Gary Bettman of Bill Daley the NHL. as far as direction goes and they've been terrific this bubble idea has worked to a t it's been sensational. was great that the PA in the League got together to extend the CPA. So it's been a lot of good things that way now regarding the unknown, which is what it is. We don't know we have no idea whether it'd be a vaccine sooner than later we'll. There'd be this roller it'd be that I don't know. I I know that if everybody had their druthers, we'd like to start a camp sometime in November play in. December. But we can't say if that's going to happen, it may come down to shorten season starting up in January. Who knows we want fans in the building? Obviously that's part and parcel of our game. We don't know if that could have so. What what you try to do is is Go About Your Business make sure your players are given their programs and they had to hear that. ETC etc.. Rely on the science of of what this virus has done with the people that lead that into things, and then the our legal make some strong decisions which they always have. So be prepared for anything and everything, but it's all about the unknown is what it is. John we so appreciate your time and congratulations i. know the week began a little somber but things turned up. Okay. For The New York Rangers so enjoying. Great Big Jerry. Top thanks Emily Guitar Integrate. Stay. Thanks John Davidson J. D., of course, for those who are young remember. An incredible color commentator back in the day. For the NHL, not only for the Rangers broadcasts but nationally. Just great I. I still Miss Him in the booth I feel I think. He might still be one of my favorite color commentators of all time. And the way he color commentator him his wife sitting there on the couch listening to the. Watching J. One of the best or so happy that he's a friend of the show. Moving onto other series in the qualification round besides the lightning and boost. The Blue Jackets. Philly Montreal expecting the Carey praised Carter heart showdown throughout the series. Keep them on some of these series. We'll have started games been played by the time here this but what's your? What was your read on Philly Montreal? I do think I believe in Philly? I'm a believer I. Think they're very well balanced team as long as goaltending holds up which I. Don't have any doubts that it will. This is team that could go far. I think my biggest impression with Montreal in the first round was not just carry price. The entire defensive buy in from this team is quite strong and their teeth -fensive group is pretty. Good like Shea Weber is playing the best hockey. He's ever played as a Montreal Canadian and that's a really good thing for them. So I don't think they're going to be an easy out but I like fill the flyers here and really because that second line is really good. The first one wasn't even clicking and to quadruple gets going and courier gets going like other teams are in trouble. All the I also think it's funny with Montreal the whisper about them coming into the playoffs they didn't want to be there because they are the twenty four. Yeah you. Stories of like veteran leaders and the team have whipper everybody to ship be like you should go to the bubble we'll do good and then it turned out according to Jim Rutherford. It was the penguins didn't want to be the. Inference it is. Serious Prescott purchase like, yeah. Maybe some guys didn't want to be there. They want to be back with their families. So we had it all wrong Montreal totally into the bubble Pittsburgh F the bubble we. Washington the islanders that game is actually just starting as we're doing the podcast John Carlson apparently playing for Washington. This was of course, the Berry tracks revenge series. I think the thing that a lot of people don't recognize that as much as very attractive. Exact his revenge capitals for not paying him..

"Anytime you have a chance at number one picks this. It's a very special time we're in the middle of our build. So this is certainly going to be a big big part of it. Now, listen I. I know that the supernatural work in your favor you got the lucky chair the whole thing. What did you think when that guy dropped the ball? Did you think wait a second? We both also gentleman that's an. And I know everybody's conspiracy everybody says, well, that tells you something and then everybody else is saying, well, it's the ball went down. How did it go up? It had to be waited at the. I mean, it's been crazy out there. It's I'm not a I try not to read too much with the social media even though I have two daughters who send me a lot of things but there's been some funny stuff that's been said There's there's some humor out there I can tell you that. John you mentioned you guys are in the middle of this build and you get the number one pick, which is a huge deal I'm curious before you have the number one pick what were your priorities this off season to get done with this roster, and now that you have the number one pick, how does it alter your plans It's a it's a really good question. Nothing's normal. We Zero sipple. So. Usually. When you're in hockey whether you're player Oh, you're part of management you It's kind of like a year long plan of when things happen the playoffs when they're over the hall of Fame Draft Free Agency the development. camp. And then you go through arbitration and then you get into And then you get into traverse city for the September Tournament All this stuff and this is not normal. Everything is different right now we're having a lot of meetings regarding our. End Zoom calls all our players into the season talks. So the whole thing is is somewhat different but very interesting because of for us. We we are trying to. Understand and analyze and stay with the game plan that we have. When you when you're fortunate like we are and get the number, one pick that can help expedite your way of thinking but we're still going to stay with our plan one of the big. Things coming up, we'll be our goaltending. We're going to have to goaltenders next year not three. So we're having lots of discussions about. I myself have talked to Henrik Lundqvist when we got back from Tronto. We had a great conversation that'll stay in house. And we're working through things nothing's been decided. but we're working through things. So I I'm in a in a in a position here with our group that were were staying with our plan. We're setting up the off season now for the programs for the players and we're going to get better and better and better, and some good things did happen in the bubble. Some good young players played well. We had John. Miller, who's a big part of our future coming out of the University of Wisconsin? He was out of training camp couldn't play in Toronto because of the rules but boy was he good I mean really good. So things like that are positive. We're GONNA keep that mindset going forward. You did have three goals and that's unusual. That's not something that we typically get and I think a lot of us expected it to not work out for them to be some drama or for one of the guys know maybe to get traded why do you think it worked for you guys why? Why did you come out of this? You know feeling okay about where you're at. Well, for your goods to start with. Would not have work. If Henrik Lundquist was not the person that he is. He's very, very classy individual. He's played his entire career with the rangers and he's he's got a a competitive, yet open and smart intelligent mind. And we had to when you're when you'RE IN A. In a situation where we are and we're looking north trying to get better. You have to understand that with goaltending you have to figure out who it's going to be long term, and we had to take goalie like sister and and we had to play him. It's he he was lights out in the American league I mean lights out. So. He had his opportunity to play everybody understood it and he goes I think was nine and one. So. So these are the types of things you have to do is management group to figure out where you're going to be you know two three or four or five years from now, and if you don't take a look at it, it doesn't work. No Henrik was absolutely understanding and the class was oozing out of them how he didn't come in with a bad attitude. You came in here and he worked his tail off every single day as did Georgia. So I've seen three goals before I've seen it work before dot work before this one I would say at work because of the open communication with everybody involved and then with the with the with the future hall of Famer and Lundquist the way he handled things was extraordinarily good. DOES HE WANNA play next year Hank. Don't know yet. We're getting figured out. It's You know he's he's the season just ended. So it takes time to figure things out. Done me and is a very strong smart.

"With three three. Almost three more in overtime. Yes. Almost two eight here. It's of hockey six hours. Okay. So the entire stars flames game was played between the first and second overtime. So we get we get all these overtime six hours of hockey five overtimes. To penalties are called. Penalties one of them's puck over the glass which they have to call. A high stick Nick Felino. Like three types of of penalties that are called in time, they're the ones that you have to call the puck over the glass in too many men who? Are. There are the high sticking one's which usually are going to get a call. Because Super Dangerous, and then there is the Felino. Morgan Riley one where if it's an egregious play in the offensive zone to create a scoring chance for one team that might get a call not all the time but might get a call. Two penalties in five overtimes is completely unacceptable. It is garbage. It is reinforcing the thing that I have said for decades about this dump sport, which is at the referees. Beautiful men, all of them and women it's great. They all do their job very well, they run this thing by a script anybody who's seen hockey for more than two minutes knows exactly when a penalty is going to be called in the third period for team trailing by a goal, it's a script they all run it. If they've all got the same script and you know the script says when you flip the page that says to triple overtime is don't call anything. Let them play and it's garbage. It's why these games go on forever is because they don't and the thing is I've seen the argument being like Oh. If you drop it to four on four, let's not that's not fair. That's not regulation hockey. That's a crappy way to end the game. You know what's The game this mutated. Garbage hockey that we see in overtime where they're not calling penalties it's not even the same game he played for the first three periods. So if you're going to do this, just don't call any penalties ever they get thunderdome. Just, let him play all the time if you're not going to call penalties overtime and be real real hockey game. I think the issue is inconsistency like I look at that Cam Atkinson play where he crashed into the net, it was had been behind them and I'm okay with the no call because I don't know what that call would have been. It wasn't tripping wasn't holding put in the qualification round that was a penalty shop like we saw two penalty shots in one game in the qualification round like you can't be that inconsistent and then you had game five of Toronto vs Columbus literally chains the officiating crew beforehand because of the way they called penalties so I do think the inconsistency. GIVES FANS reason to be upset but I say this again like I said last night and we were watching this five overtime game. If you're the. Columbus blue jackets and you're complaining about like. An obstruction call or something not being whistled for you. I mean. Come on let's big old glass house and you're thrown boulders every single time the Toronto Maple leafs tried to try to connect the pass in the first in the qualification round it was it was like their player was being operated as a Mary Annette. There was just a stick there every single time around them manipulating their body. So they couldn't get the Puck that team obstructs to the nth degree. And so to knock it a call listen. Maybe they got jobbed Atkinson kind of fell, but maybe they got jobbed. But you are the last team in this league start complaining about things not being called because you get away with murder on the ice to play the defensive style that you play. Come on with that. anyways. Speaking getaway getting away with things obviously know FBI investigation into the Rangers fixing the draft lottery. Let's talk to John Davidson about their good fortune. Joining us now the line is old friend John Davidson the current president of the New York hockey, Rangers. The man who I imagine has had a pretty good week jd. First off. Thanks for joining us again now tell us. The emotions the emotional journey of John Davidson as you saw that Little Ping Pong ball out of the machine or the Rangers win the lottery. First of all hello gang It's a strange week to be honest with you when we're so excited about getting up to Toronto under the bubble to play hockey and move out and free games, and that was very disappointing. Even though there was some good things, the positive things that we got out of it. And then we come home and the next thing on the agenda is the is the lottery and the number one pick. And I went is in my home with my wife and I went to my superstitious chair. And sat there and waited and waited, and then the Little Ping, Pong ball started about around I couldn't watch. It looked away. I couldn't watch and all of a sudden my way started screaming. So I go home my I looked and sure enough we had one. And it was it was pretty pretty emotional for me to be with you, I. I like to chat. That was one of the few times in my life I was speechless. and. So. You know the hockey gods smiled I asked for a few favours up there. My parents and things and sure enough this thing worked out and we're excited it's it's going to be great for hockey for the Rangers obviously for.

"Hey, emily. Greg, how does it feel to have grown up as a fan of a team that has the resources to fix the NHL draft lottery? I feel blessed. I think all my sporting choices have been blessed. I also chose Chelsea my club and obviously have a Russian oligarch running us. So things are going to turn out our way, and here we now have the New York Rangers and the oligarchs of the ping pong balls that have twisted in our favor. So yeah, it's been a really great twenty twenty for me personally my favorite thing about the conspiracy theories of the NHL. Fix the draft for the Rangers because that guy dropped the ball that was either filled with helium or had some sort of magnetic on it to allow it to travel to the top of the lot of machine. My Fair conspiracy theory is the fact that they did this with James. Dolan still owning the Rangers knowing the heat that he and Gary Bettman have had through the years. It's pretty hilarious like of all the guys the NHL is. Just two guys the NHL is not bending over to help. It's like Eugene Melnyk and James Dolan. About correct. So we're going to bend over backwards. Wouldn't you think they would've fixed it for Connor mcdavid not to have him end up in. Edmonton exactly. Exactly. All right. We got a big show today but real real on the lottery the team that broke your heart didn't win the lottery was who? I really felt for the Minnesota while there's something about bill garin walking into this situation that feels tragic to me like he inherited a really bad roster with bad contracts and I, feel like a real capris office coming into the League and it's awesome and I just wish that he had a cool fun young wing man that's fast to come in with them. Yeah. I I agree with you I feel like the wild wild before caprice off it was like Mary Gabric and that's it. As. Far As homegrown offense ital- lake me for being a team Minnesota they've kind of been like rudderless and you know the most personality they ever had was when they spent a billion dollars to bring into other guys from outside the organization and even that did really produce results. So it would have been cool to see Minnesota become the team of Alexis law near but but sale Avi they simply didn't have the resources to pay off the Ernst and Young Guy and win the lottery. Appreciate you thanks Jim Dolan coming up on It's it's the price of the beer at MSG. It's forever going higher and giving them all the resources. Coming up in this edition of ESPN is we have John Davidson Jd, our old friend president of the Rangers talk about their big week or Awkward Week Actually A-plus Sarah. McClellan Star Tribune Minnesota Wild writer speaking of the wild who was up in Edmonton. kind of bubble adjacent but also inside the bubble to cover games, obviously the wild done but Sarah's going to join us to talk about her experiences and then obviously what should be an interesting season for Minnesota. All that and more obviously playoff hockey to on this edition of ESPN and ice. Let's start the show proper shelley from the ice to your ear buds a podcast about hockey featuring things to do with hockey from your friends at ESPN. It's ESPN on ice with with Shitski and Kaplan. It's ESPN is the podcast for. Talks about hockey I'm Greg Ski Senior Nhl Writer. Kaplan national NHL reporter. And if we're going to start talking about anything, it's going to be you got it. The fourth longest game in National Hockey League history five overtimes over six hours long Seth Jones I tallied it up Seth Jones skated longer in one game than the total running time of the nineteen forties. Disney. Classic Dumbo. This is the kind of stats you can get from this podcast. What an incredible, and here's the thing about the five overtime game with Tampa and and and Columbus. It was actually really entertaining like like it was it was a wasn't a slog. It wasn't just like I mean people were gassed by the end for sure but lake I thought the game play was actually pretty good for most of the five overtimes. Totally agree and maybe that's because the refs just let them play. We're not calling anything. But Yeah No. If you want some other funds stats, the lightning had eight shot from the exact same amount that the rangers had in three games in their timing bubble. So that's my favorite. Began no, it was an incredible game I. think it reminded us. Pie We love playoff hockey. There's nothing to it Steph Jones. I really feel like Tortorella is violating some Canadian labor laws with the way he's using him, but we are keeping our great American hope this guy can do it. All I swear to you watching the TV. I tried to watch play where Jones wasn't on the ice and I felt like it was never happening. Yeah. It's going to be great to see him with a gold medal around his neck at the next Olympics. Here's the thing. You bring up the penalties there's been this debate. I think Mike Milbury helped spark it by taking a picture of the space needle in Toronto and three didn't get. Less as. Motorola Razor Oh God. It's like the only way that could that picture could be less clear as he had like a court illustrator drive for him as he was standing there and then tried to take a picture of it listen he sparked this debate about whether or not marathon overtimes should end with a tweak to the overtime rules I I don't think he was saying we should go directly to a three on three or or a shootout and get the word shootout of your shootout out of your mouth. It's never gonNA come in house over Gary Bettman said body. The. But I think he was making a point that others have made over over time, which is like when you get past three overtimes like for the sake of health for the sake of can the kids see the end of the game on all that like maybe then go to four on four, go to three on three ultimately, I'd like to see it left up to the players like maybe the votes and says, you know what? Maybe we don't need five overtimes I think most of them would vote against it and say, let's just keep playing. But. I am curious to know what you think about at some point maybe getting away from the five on five marathon overtime thing and trying to develop a way to have these games end before they cross the six hour mark. I you forgot to mention the number one reason why we cannot have shootouts in playoff hockey and that's because our dear colleague. John Buccigross, create an entire economy on the overtime challenge, and we'll put them out of business. We can't. Insists no, we can't. We can't do about. That Yeah you know I was thinking that as well and I was thinking okay. If this is four on four, this would probably end sooner if this was three on three definitely ends sooner. But I'm not necessarily sure that it has to sooner and I think that a lot of the discourse last night was because there were so many games happening in the bubble because it literally moved the game one of the hurricanes and Bruin series to the next day. This is unusual typically not having these peewee style tournaments reverend gotta get off the Ice Ninety minutes to disinfect the benches, which by the way just like take a pause of how ridiculous that is. They're putting all these precautions to making this bubble safe tasting everybody every day, and then there's a little things they do like. Well, we have to spend ninety minutes to disinfect the benches. And then they're all going to spit and Claude each other it's working it's working though party it's working against. Exactly I feel like you would be arbitrary to decide. Okay. After the third overtime period, then we go to foreign four, and then at the fifth, we go to three thousand three like you said, it would go to a player vote likely and I don't think the players would go for it. You probably right what they should go for is this and what the NHL should go for is this. We had five overtime last night. Okay. So that is three periods of regulation..

You, you say you're not an you say, you're not in charge of your life. You are doing it second thing that people regret is they don't express themselves. Why haven't I be able to express my feelings? I can't I couldn't get on Letterman years ago because he said, I wasn't square enough. And I wasn't a hip enough. He wasn't square enough to make fun of me. And I wasn't hip enough to, to be cool. I just never I've been, you know, I am the I'm the Hollywood square. I just so so anyway, I couldn't go. So, I think it, what would you do with me? So it so, it's, it's I I'm so grateful to be. Scared. Now, do you want to speak on this show? No. I just spent one. Get some of your credited pull yourself together. Anytime you want to jump in. That's fine were over there. Okay. He's a musician singer, and he's playing with this plastic water bottle. You've seen his familiar face on dozens of TV shows. What is a bio long intro, dial on my. You're not versatile. I'm I've never learned to do anything. Well. Let them John, then you can speed it. So unbel-. You call them and entertainment. By the way, detainment. Yeah, he's tired. "Delegate in two thousand fifteen mis miss three weeks time. But says it doesn't really go away for the entire season Bart care to speak to the injury, because that's not good news. If you're not going to be her percents all year. I've never had one before never had bleak problem. Hip pointer. Yeah. I wanna I would say the same about Hicks, then, right because Hicks should be the one who's given judge a lot of the vice, you know, making sure that I don't know if left's I right side without it is a remember. Hey hurt. One side and hurt the other, you know, and I think they have to be super cautious because when he's back, you don't want him to exit again. That, that, but that's a bummer especially coming from BELTRAN who I would absolutely trust. I you know, the good thing about the Yankees as their ten games over five hundred so you don't have to rush Aaron judge back in anyway. But that did not sound good. Secondly, Josh Norman of the Redskins loves Dave Galvin said he should be on our payroll because he gave us Landon Collins. And then he passed on the best quarterback in the draft and Dwayne Haskins. It's funny wasn't a whole lot of love loss there to begin with. Josh Norman though. I know what's to Washington. I know not a damn thing and they've spent money after money after money after money end up looking like a really bad signing. He could he. Absolutely could do. You got. Okay. So this is this is great for ranger fans. John Davidson has mingka's been telling you step down as GM Columbus. So now he can pay his way to becoming maybe the next general manager of the Rangers. And actually, I think he SPN going as far as they sources say, I think that he is going to be the next GM that way. Yeah. So I had like a funny story about John Davidson that has nothing to do with him. But once you've Mick Jones from foreigner. Hold for applause and Graham guy. Okay. He told me that the song double vision was written because he went to a ranger game. John Davidson got hurt and had to leave the game. And the reason was double.

"That's not why they may those deals and then they can lose everybody in free agency. Possibly maybe kill keep his English, but they're gonna end up cleaning house. So I think this is a very interesting playoff run for Columbus. Not just to make the playoffs, but at least position themselves to avoid Tampa. And at least get out of the first round that was the destination. For Tortorella kicker Ryan and everybody involved with the blue jackets, John Davidson, all those guys that would be. Very disappointing. They got beat Montreal Carolina. I think they would see some satisfaction just making the playoffs. I can't see Columbus feeling any satisfaction. If they were to get wiped out in the first round, you still wanna make it, and you never know stranger things have happened. But I don't see any of those three teams beating Tampa. You least want the opportunity to do. So. And you're right. Tonight's game is so huge Donald. Hey, Don, remember when the NHL was on ESPN, they showed about every team in the league when the NHL came back from the lockout since the network is now NBC sports net. They don't show every team in the league. Does that bother? You. Don't you agree? It doesn't bother me because I have the package. So I can watch any game that I want what I understand people who do not have the package feel like you see a lot of Bruins a lot of fliers. Lot of Red Wings seems like it's the same teams over and over again. But I gotta be oswego. It was a sanity SPN. I don't think he SPN was showing Canadian teams back today. I think they were showing a lot of Rangers flyers. They're probably showing the avalanche a little bit more because the avalanche are really good. So maybe there's a little. Bit different back then. But I think these networks are going to air the games that give the chance of the best ratings, you know, Sunday afternoon twelve thirty I'll be down to Philadelphia for the Rangers flyers game. That's not a great game. Okay. The flyers pretty much mathematically eliminated. The Rangers are mathematically eliminated. But you know, what NBC might get a good number because there's a ton of ranger fans in a ton of flyer fans. That's what they're looking for. And they could shift that to try to give you a better matchup, maybe giving you a Canadian team versus like, Columbus, blue jackets. But I wonder if it would get a better rating because of the fact that you know, the Canadian fan base is aren't going to see it on NBC and a team. Columbus doesn't have the following the flyers the Rangers and the Red Wings have. So they're going to go for the bigger number have. It's baseball too. I mean a Sunday night baseball. How often do you see the Padres on Sunday night baseball right off the Diamondbacks on Sunday night baseball. How often do you see some of the lesser small-market teams the Tampa Bay rays? No. You see the Yankees. You see the Red Sox? You see the phillys? You see the giants. The dodgers the different the NBA's different because they put the stars in. You know, a lot of LeBron James and Kevin Durant. So depending on what teams that are playing for us to be Durant. Oklahoma City now, it's Durant. Golden State used to be LeBron Cleveland Miami Cleveland now, Los Angeles. So it's a little bit different. But. But for the most part with the exception of football. You know, they are going to go with the bigger teams because they wanna get the bigger rating. Ricky says what's going on with the outer scoring? They were shut out three of the last five games. Their last game of the season is versus the caps that can be fun game..
