"Can still provide a little bit of hope to those who need to know that everything's not wrong. Even in the winter, everything's not wrong. All right, we are back and we are joined now by Levi weeber, who covers the rangers for the athletic and is driving somewhere across the vast expanse of Texas and routes to ranger spring training. Hello, Levi, keep your eye on the road. Yeah, of course. Hello from the world of antique shops and rotted out old barge. Sounds delightful. Highway two 87, as you let us know before we started recording. I mean, you probably could have probably could have figured that out from antique stores and rotted out buildings. Like if you've taken that driver, two 87, I know exactly what you're talking about. I don't know the area that wealth but I'm sure some of our whistlers could. So we're going to talk about the rangers in 2023, but if we could just rewind a bit now that the dust has settled on the bloodletting last summer, if you could kind of take us through your understanding of what it is that did in John Daniels and how that whole sequence of events happened with Daniels being the one to let Chris Woodward go and then Daniel's being cut himself just a couple days later and replaced by Chris young, what was the proximate cause of that and is it add that it played out in that order of events? The answer depends. What was the approximate cause of the way that it played out? I would say it's probably a lack of common human decency by ownership. The cause for him being let go. It's a little more complicated, right? Like you can look back at some of the ways that the draft is played out over the past ten years and there have been some picks that have been very questionable, but there kip still has his job. The director of scouting and the guys in charge of the draft. So if that were the cause you would think that he would not still be around. He is. I don't know for sure, so it is kind of speculation at this point. What I do know is that the rangers probably should have started their rebuild from those World Series years. That era of Texas Rangers baseball. They probably should have started that when everything went wrong in 2014. And they had like 97 first basement and everybody got hurt. That's when I should have sort of capitalized and just turned it around quickly. They still had some assets that they could trade for real value. Instead, they came back in 15, it looked like they weren't going to be the juggernauts. They had been and then here comes Jeff bannister and has never ever quit mantra and they overtook the Astros. Super exciting time to be a ranger span, right? The Astros leave their come and take it flag and then the rangers clinched the division and waved their weekend and took it flag ha ha. And then 2016, they should have started the rebuild and they went out in one about 201 run games and they had the best record in the American League. They summarily got bounced in the first round by the Blue Jays. But it was enough to kind of keep the band together. They should have started in 2017. And they kind of did, they traded you Darvish, but they didn't really go all in on the rebuild. And part of, this has never been said publicly by anyone in ownership. But part of I think the pressure was they were opening a new ballpark in 2020. And they wanted a good competitive team on the field in 2020. And so rather than really go into a full multiyear tank rebuild like the Astros had done in years prior. It kind of just tried to rush the process. And what happened there is you ended up not being good in 2020. And then of course, irony means that the first year in their big league park, there was no fans, which was. I mean, it sucks. It's funny, but it sucks. And so it took them a little longer than they should have with ownership going, hey, we really need a competitive product on the field in 2020. It really ties the hands of somebody trying to do a rebuild. And so by the time it got around to, it looks like the rebuild is going well. There have been some developmental when was the last time they developed a front of the line starting pitcher. I don't know, Kevin Brown maybe. Kenny Rogers, possibly. CJ Wilson, if you count him, he was pretty short lived as a top of the rotation starter. So there were reasons, and you could look back and go, hey man, you had 20 years the ranges have been bad for 6 straight. It's time for new leadership. But the way that it was done after that many years in the organization. And beyond just his acumen as a front office brain, like John Daniels was an immaculate representative of the organization. He was at every charity event. He was kind to fans. He was he dealt with people with decency dealt with the scouts with decency. Like from a, just a personal standpoint. I really admired the way that he went about his business. And so if it was time to move on, then his contract was up at the end of last year, they could have just said, hey, man, we're going to not renew your contract. You're just going to give you the respect and the sort of dignity to step down at the end of the year. That's really how it should have been done. And so the theory that makes the most sense to me and this is pure speculation. I want to make that clear is that when Chris Woodward was fired, people were like, yeah, well, it should be John Daniels. And ownership heard that and went, oh, the fans are not happy. Let's do something else. And then turn around and fire John Daniels. That is speculation. But it makes the most sense to me that for the timing and the way that things played out. Because even ray Davis admitted, we asked, hey did John Daniels know this was coming like especially, I don't know, two days ago when he marched him out here to fire the manager. Right. And he gave this weird little smirk and was like, no, you can totally by surprise. Wow, that's definitely not coolish. And soulless at all. Well, and then it's sort of an interesting. I mean, there's the humanity of the timing of their decision. And then it's curious too when you think about the off season moves that he was sort of empowered to make the additions of semi and Seeger. And then the through line to this off season, I don't want to give short change to the new regime in terms of your assessment of them, but I think that there is a narrative that one could construct around this rangers team that despite the fact that they aren't quite where you might expect them to need to be to take on the Astros in the west. It's not like they haven't been aggressive in these last two off seasons, right? So there was secret and semi and then this year, they bring back Perez, and then they go out and get arguably the best pitcher in baseball when he's healthy in degrom and supplement that rotation with valdi and heni. So I'm curious maybe before we get into those individual signings and what the team expects of them for this season and beyond. What is your sense of where the club sees themselves in the competitive landscape of the ALS and then the AL beyond that? Yeah, they've said Chris young, I've lost count of the number of times you said we expect to contend for a playoff spot in 2023. And that is, you know, you would hear hedged comments in 2018, 1920 like we expect to be competitive.

"Fact is that kitty hawk was rough this year. Yet, their courage and determination isn't gone just yet. Will and orv throw themselves back into their work. Kate reports that all she and pop ever hear is the boys incessant jabbering about flying. September soon arrives Ohio mourns the assassination of its native son and longtime public servant, U.S. president William McKinley. What an added distress, this must be, as will travels to Chicago to speak at the western society of engineers. He gives a humble speech filled with praise for those upon whose shoulders he stands, especially Otto lilienthal and his now pier, Octavian. His words are well received, but for all his humility, we'll also know that, upon returning to Dayton, he and will must reckon with the fact that these very intellectual giants got so very much wrong. As orv later puts it, it was like groping in the dark. Lillian tall's figures were not to be relied upon. Nobody else had done any scientific experimenting along these lines. The boys face down this challenge upstairs in their bike shop with a 6 foot long, 16 inch square wind tunnel. Yet to experience the Edison touch, they rely on a gasoline engine to power an electric fan, thus creating their wind. As October and November pass, the duo laboriously cut and pound all the hacksaw blades and bicycle spokes into dozens of model biplanes, then send them through the tunnel. Slowly but surely, they unlearn the errors of auto lilienthal and move toward their next iteration of glider. But by December, the boys have to turn their attention back to manufacturing bikes. Yes, even with cigar loving Charlie Taylor's help, who's still very much employed by the rights and doing a great job, despite Kate's dislike of him. Will and or of can't check out indefinitely. Though, octopus certainly wants them to. He's so eager for them to carry on. He offers to ask his friend Andrew Carnegie to fund them so they can ignore the bike shop. We'll honor to climb down. Patiently, they build bikes through the winter of 1901 to 1902, and when spring arrives, they turn their attention from machines with two wheels to one machine with two wings. Using their own figures and data from the wind tunnel, the boys have high hopes for this year's trip to kitty hawk. In late August, 1902, will and ore of undertake what has become their annual pilgrimage to North Carolina's outer banks. They arrive at their sandy beach camp on the 29th, and immediately are in better spirits than last year. For one thing, the camp, which they get back in order over the next week in change, is becoming rather nice. They've built themselves an off road sand tolerant bicycle, deep in their water well, and above all else, will exalt. No Edward huffaker and no mosquitos. Yeah, we'll throw Edward in the same company as a mosquitos. Man, they really hate that guy. Starting on September 8th, they begin assembling this year's flying machine. With the wingspan of 32 feet, it's their biggest yet. In fact, the total wing area is 305 ft², almost double that of 1900 glider. As they assemble this monster of a soaring machine, they also take apart last year's. There just isn't space to house both. The boys have also added a new feature this time around. A rear rudder. All of this takes a week and a half, but by September 19th, the ready to fly. And this time I really mean they because orv is finally taken a crack of piloting. I can't tell you why the mustachioed right hadn't done so earlier. Perhaps will was just more interested or was taking all the risks to protect his little brother. After all, the dangers of flying are no joke, as orfs soon finds out. It's a late September day, 1902. Or of Wright stands on the sand, ready to pilot the glider just as soon as he gets the needed wind. And he can hear and see a breeze coming. Soon, he feels it. Reaching 12 mph, the wind is strong enough to produce the lift he needs. Charging forward, he soon airborne. But to his horror, or suddenly realizes this isn't breeze. He'll later call it a whirlwind. The nose of the glider jerks up hard about 25 feet, so he responds by tilting the forward rudder to descend. But only a moment later, the capricious wind shifts worse, the inexperienced pilot doesn't quite have the skill to handle the needed wing warping correctly in this situation. The glider slams into the ground, spitting or out headfirst. Thankfully, he's all right. Not even bruised. But The Rookie is a bit shaken, and it takes a few days to repair the glider. Things go smoothly on this trip from here on out though. On the night of October 2nd, too much coffee leaves an over caffeinated or unable to sleep. In the state, he realizes the immovable rudder is a problem. Fish to add a hinge. Because this isn't about the rear rodder responds differently and could assist with wing warping. Meanwhile, more visitors come, including kitty hawk locals, who've really grown to love the rights. The boys older brother, Lauren Wright, George spratt, Octavian, and octaves assistant, Augustus herring. But still no Edward huffaker. Will and orf politely suffer through octave and Augustus testing out a far inferior multi wing soaring machine. But by mid October, the boys are back to exclusively testing their own glider. By the time they depart for home on October 28th, the Wright brothers have logged some thousand flights this summer are gliding over 600 feet and staying in the air for 26 seconds. As Davi mcculla so eloquently sums up the Wright brothers 1902 trip to kitty hawk. They could soar they could float, they could dive and rise, circle and glide and land, all with assurance. Now they had only to build a motor. It shouldn't be that hard to get their hands on a motor in late 1902. As we know from the last episode, gasoline engines have really come into their own. And many of the nation's new horseless carriage makers are embracing it. In fact, it was only days before this year's kitty hawk trip wrapped up that Henry Ford's latest racer, 9 9 9, beat will and orb's fellow high in Alexander winton. It was Henry's second win over him. But the Wright brothers several increase only draw one response and what's offered is far too heavy. So once again, the boys head to their shop, but this time, they aren't the ones calling the shots. That would be their cigar chewing mechanic Charlie Taylor. Charlie has very limited experience puts him ahead of his two employers. And frankly, he gets engines in a way they don't. To quote Charlie. While the boys were handy with tools, they'd never done much machine work. And anyway, they were busy on the airframe. It was up to me. My only experience with the gasoline engine was an attempt to repair one in an automobile in 1901. And so, in the early months of 1903, Charlie works on the engine as the brothers focus on the propellers. Both are major undertakings, and frankly, works of genius. Again with echoes of our last episode, Charlie's engine has no carburetor per se. The gas sits in a one gallon tank, hanging from a wing strut and relies on gravity to feed the fuel to a shallow chamber where it can mix with the air. Then perform its explosive magic in the four stroke four cylinder 12 horsepower engine. Brilliantly, they keep its weight well under 200 pounds by having the engine block cast from aluminum. Meanwhile, the boys are crafting the propellers, which, to their surprise, proves to be a less developed technology than they had hoped. It appears that, just like routers, propellers respond differently to aircraft than watercraft. Yet, it seems no one else experimenting with propellers in the air has figured these details out. Once again, will and or of have to do it on their own. Yet incredibly, they again use a wind tunnel to collect data and sort this out in a mere matter of months. Charlie considers this achievement greatly underappreciated. To quote him again, I think the hardest job will in ore have had was with the propellers. I don't believe they were ever given enough credit for that development. The outcome is two handcrafted propellers of spruce wood, each measuring 8 and a half feet in diameter and set to spin in opposite directions. One clockwise, the other counterclockwise, so as to equalize the pole they create, otherwise known as gyroscopic action. Oh yeah, and let's not forget. They also build another aircraft. This one is so big, they can't even fully assemble it in Dayton, Ohio. The boys will put it together for the first time on site. But getting to that point is still fraught with difficulty. Though will and orb depart for an arrive at, there'd be beloved North Carolina outer banks beach in late September 1903, the disassembled aircraft won't make it until October 8th. It takes almost a month to get it put together, but then disaster strikes when the engine misfires and vibrates so hard, it damages the propeller shafts beyond repair. Ultimately, this force is orb to make a return trip to Dayton, where he and Charlie workout replacement shafts made of solid steel. It isn't until December 11th that orf makes it back to kitty hawk with these replacement parts. But the repairs are soon made, and the boys have finally reached the point to which their work has been building for so many years. It's time to attempt controlled, sustained, and powered flight. It's December 14th, 1903. We're among North Carolina's outer banks. At the Wright brothers beach camp, just outside kitty hawk. Will and ore are just finishing repairs on their flying machine. And what a sight it is to behold. From forward to rear rudder, it's wrapped in a beautiful and strong white muslin cloth. Spanning 40 feet, the biplanes wings are securely trust with the same type of wire used on the Brooklyn Bridge. That's right. Roebling wire. Two spruce propellers are a fix just behind the wings, while the motor powering them is located on the bottom wing, just off center right to counterbalance a piloting Wright brothers body weight as he lies next to it just off center left. And as the afternoon comes, the boys find themselves content with their last adjustments. It's time to test it out. With the help of John T Daniels and two other locals, will and or have moved their over 600 pound flying machine on skids more than a quarter mile. It's a big kill devil hill. The next get the aircraft on their 60 foot launching track, then start the engine. Curious, but now terrified local boys run off as it roars to life. Finally, it's time to decide who gets to make this historic flight and the fairest way possible. A coin toss. Big brother Wilbur wins. He lies prone in the pilot's position. His hips rest in a cradle that allows him to warp the wings by swaying his body as he also grips a bar before him that controls the forward router or elevator. And finally, he's off. We'll shoot down the track and ride into the air, but just as he gets off the ground, he overcorrects his ascent. Almost immediately, he slams hard into the sandy earth, only 100 feet from the launching track. Hardly a sustained or controlled flight, and repairs will be needed, yet the brothers are overcome with joy. This was a user error. They know that. And after some minor repairs, they're sure they've got this. It's now December 17th. A cold winter's morning at kitty hawk. And once again, John Daniels and a couple other locals have helped the Wright brothers get their flying machine into place on big hill. The engines engaged. It starts warming. Since will had his chance three days ago, it's orf, who takes the prone pilot position. And at ten 35 a.m., he starts down the track. A headwind slows him down, but at the tracks end, he launches into the air. It's choppy, wavy, but orfs in control. The gas engine powers the propellers pushing the heavy machine with such force it can sustain lift. That's it. They've done it. And John Daniels even manages to use a camera for the first time in his life to snap a photo of the plane in air. It's only 120 feet and lasts a mere 12 seconds. But orbes flight was powered, controlled, and sustained. As are that afternoon's three increasingly farther and longer lasting flights, the last of which is 59

"It's not like other places aren't expensive, you know, it's not like other places don't involve tiny housing, you know, very small, expensive housing. I'm just saying, like, you know. It's the top of the heap. Top of the list. Yeah. And it's funny 'cause they're like, oh, I just exhibiting weakness and I was like, my impression of New Yorkers while I live there was not that they were like an unemotional people. It's not like they're like, we are stoic all of us. It's like, no, they have feelings. Sometimes they yell about them, and it's a huge wildly and wonderfully diverse place, so they're all kinds of people who have all kinds of relationships to feelings, yelling, loudness, kind of like I'm kind of yelling now. It's a big, it's a big, beautiful, diverse, expensive crowded little spot. So there you go. It's like a sort of state of nature lawless type thing where when you show that it gets in your head at all, then it just encourages people. It's like, if you see a bear and you're supposed to yell at the bear and scare off the bear instead of running away from the bear, do I have my bare situation handling, right? I don't know, never really been face to face with a bear myself, at least close enough that I had to decide to do something about it. But, you know, generally you run the quarry runs and the predator gives chase, right? So there's almost a very primitive elemental thing when it comes to fandom and someone sort of admits that you're in their head that they have heard you boo and now, now they're in for it because they have admitted that the booing got to them. So I don't know. It's a funny, it's a funny thing. Some toxic masculinity must be at work somewhere in here. I would imagine. I don't even. I wouldn't even I've already, I've already said too much, Ben, you know? I've invited all kinds of responses, do you know? I don't know. Andrew benintendi, by the way, he is betting two 11 as Yankee. Higher than Joey Gallo, 93 WRC plus. Right. And not totally unexpected, I suppose he had a 360 six babbit as a royal. Now he has a two 79 babbit, as Yankee, his numbers have plunged accordingly. He was not hitting for a ton of power as it was. Not that he can't contribute in other ways. But just saying, that's a storyline I will be following, which is not to say that if Gallo, the Dodger out hit spent intended to Yankee, then we will point in jeer at Brian cashman and say, oh, see, you should have stuck with Gallo because, again, there were extenuating circumstances that I think dictated a trade perhaps. Yeah, I mean, maybe we look at this. Maybe the way to interpret this so that we can all embrace a new paradigm is to think of trading him as an act of generosity, right? Toward Joey Gallo. Maybe he was saying, this isn't a matter of weakness. Some places are just not a great fit for everybody. And that's not, you know, that's nobody's fault. That's just the way things go sometimes. You like many others. Strike out west. See what's what? I mean, he just probably still going to strike out west because he's Joey Gallo, but you know, to move on and then it's about showing human kindness and not about booing. So we can just reframe it. We can do a little switcheroo. There's no kindness in baseball. What are you talking about? And it's like there's nowhere to sit down when you're at restaurants you're all crammed into the bar. I wrote about this for short relief, a billion and a half years ago and got like a lot of Twitter responses from people from New York and I was like, it's fine. I just had a different experience of it than you. Gosh. So speaking of former rangers, we talked about one yesterday. And I don't have a generous interpretation of this move, sorry. I can't do a switcheroo. You can't salvage it. I don't think. So last time we talked about a rangers managerial firing, this time we are talking about not a general managerial firing, but a head of baseball operational firing. John Daniels is not running the rangers based pops department anymore for the first time in almost two decades. What was his ten year 17 years? Something like that. I believe he was the fourth longest tenured head of a baseball operations department after belly bean and Brian cashman and Kenny Williams. So the Daniel's reign was long-lasting, brought some success, not a lot lately and that seems to have gotten him canned and the former ranger, whom he brought in as his lieutenant as his GM Chris young, he's now the top person in that department. Seems like a capable guy. But this is interesting timing, right? It's interesting, I think, to talk about a head of baseball operations being dismissed immediately after a managers dismissed because usually there's like a little bit of a grace period between those two things where it's like whoever's running the front office, you can jettison the manager and maybe that buys you some time. There's some scapegoating that goes on there. Oh, it's the manager's fault, so now we'll get a new manager and we'll try our luck again and then if you continue to struggle, well now the head of the baseball operations department, their head is on the chopping block. But this was just rapid fire one after the other, which is interesting because it seemed as if Daniels had been involved in the Woodward firing to the extent that I could tell like he seems to have commented on it. So I don't know what was dictated from on high or whether the hammer just fell on him. After it fell on Woodward, it's just sort of a strange sequence of events, right? It's so weird. Yeah. Yeah, and the quotes that have come out after they're not great, Ben. It seems to not be popular with rangers manager Tony Beasley, who said, and here I'm quoting Joseph hoyt from the Dallas morning news. Seems like a reasonable outlet to be covering the rangers who said that he was grateful for John Daniels and called him a friend. I don't take any joy in speaking about this today. Usually I don't mind answering questions, but today I do. It's like, okay, and then he informs he being ray Davis and forms Daniels of his decision and then told young so young didn't have an opportunity to talk him out of it.

"Veronica. Who bit David Cohen to create that opportunity for el Duque. Oh, that's hilarious. Shout out to Veronica. Mitchell at tigers of Detroit is up next, Mitchell writes into the angels have enough to turn it around or will their pitching end up keeping them out of the playoffs once again. Yeah, I stopped trying to predict what the angels are going to do. I mean, who would have imagined that team with that many great players could be this bad the way they have been during this losing streak. AA Ron at Aaron plays MLB writes in so how about those Red Sox are trading Xander and everyone else columns and sound bites? Sounds like a little gloating after a sweep of the a's, but come on, it's the a stink right now. What an ALE series for God's sakes. Yeah, and I think all of those columns and comments were couched with if, right? There's a lot of AFC if the red sides continue down this trajectory. And I still think that's the case. If you see the Red Sox collapse in X 6 weeks, that might happen. We'll see what happens with the Red Sox offense. And oh, by the way, wouldn't go on too much. You lost three of 5 the Orioles and you lost that first game in the two game series against the reds. Don Irvine at Don Irvine is up next. He writes in the Yankees are doing great so far. So why are there still so many Aaron Boone haters and genki land? I'm not a Yankee fan just curious. I didn't really know this was a thing as of this season. There were past frustrations there. Oh, well, yeah, and it's social media, you know? I think people react in every moment and I've told the story before I'll tell it again. I remember during the World Series in 2014 going up to Bruce bochy, who was on his way to winning his third championship in 5 years. And I walked up to him and said, I'm having a hard time keeping up. Are you just a total genius or completely bleeping bleep stupid? Because that's what you would think if you were to read the reactions on a daily basis, people and social media, I think it just caught up in the moment. Way too much. I think Aaron judge's approval rating probably pretty high right now. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Aaron Boone, you mean, sorry. Oh, Aaron Boone, excuse me. Max Moreno at max Moreno writes in the Dodgers recently have seemed to gain a reputation for being able to turn. Pitcher's careers around at the risk of sounding too much like a Homer or the Dodgers. Also the only equivalent for hitters. They've been terrific at it. You know, max muncy, Chris Taylor, et cetera, et cetera. They've done a terrific job of developing players, you know, the Tampa Bay Rays of obviously been one of the best teams at that Andrew Freeman is a common denominator in that. And it'll be interesting going forward if you also see that with the Boston Red Sox given that heim bloom came from the Tampa Bay Rays. Blade bigler is our last one for today, buster you and Tim were discussing the improvements on my rangers. Do you think John Daniels can pull off another Cole Hamels type deal that propels them into World Series contention in the next few years? I need more information about the rangers. And you see how they progress, see how close they get, because it doesn't feel like the right time for them to make a deal like that. It's already that does it for bleacher tweets. Hashtag bleacher tweets on Twitter. If you listen to that buster Tim segment and you're like, oh wow, that would be fun to relive that again. You should go to the ESPN YouTube page and check that out because every Monday, their segment is on there. And it's a lot of fun. It is a lot of fun. It's always great to see Tim, although peek behind the curtain, we had a little issue with Tim's camera. And that's not a surprise. You know what though? He was talking about his, you know, I'm proud of him for getting through the airport with just the ticket on his phone, but do you think that was him overcompensating for what had happened like 45 seconds before? Well, I think it was a reminder of what is actual baseline is. And I know this because I'm not that far ahead of him, okay? But I am ahead of him. I think the rest of the world is at a.m. when it comes to technology. All right, that's it for today. Thanks to Tim, Sarah, Sarah Taylor, boob, Ollie, David Ross, Patrick wisdom again. He was really fun over the weekend. Have a great day, everybody. Thanks for listening. Stay safe. And remember, hating and quality based on skin color is something we need to fight against every single day..

"Thing that stood out to me as far as those awards are concerned. But they go gloves. Again, generally speaking, I think they get most of these right because we have we're so good now and being rooted in the data. But I'm hopelessly biased. JT Realmuto is the best catcher in the national league buster. Jacob stallings had a really nice year. I know his blocking numbers. I think specifically were extraordinary with his past all allowance. And that kind of stuff. But generally speaking for wars like these, I use a player's body of work to be able to sort of break ties because defense can be a little bit noisy year to year and obviously you're not watching them play defense the same way that you're watching them hit and evaluating them as such. And DT real much was the best arm in baseball. He prevents base runners from stealing better than anybody. His framing numbers are always fantastic. Baseball perspective had him third in blocking run. So across the board for my money, he's the best catcher in the national league and I'm sure I was happy for Jacob stallings. The pirates didn't have the chance to win too much this year. So that would say amongst all the words that I went through this morning. Those are the two that stood out. Surprised that Bryant snicker wasn't a finalist for that award. And surprised at JT real Muto did not win the gold glove on the national league. All right, hambo. Always great to talk with you. Later, boys. Get out. Bleacher tweets already buster, bleacher tweets, for a Tuesday, we got Andrew Campbell at real camp drew writing in, hey buster, is it possible that Nolan Arenado has a chance to either tie or surpass Brooks Robinson's gold glove total of 16, Nolan is 30 years old and only needs 7 more gold gloves to tie if he reached 16, would he retire as baseball's greatest defense of third baseman? Andrew, the, you know, I love you. But the word only needs 7 more. Only 7, 9. He is a long way away, and I would say this as we move forward. Brian Hayes is going to be a major factor because his defense is special. Also you wonder Matt Chapman with the Oakland seemingly ready to dumps salaries if they're going to move match Chapman. And if he goes the national league, that's going to change the context for sure. He would be a really nice fit for the mets, for example. Adam Smith is up next at Schmidt FIA writes in with posey's retirement. There's been a lot of chatter in TC markets about mauer's case for the hall. He had an incredible few years, but I don't know if he has longevity or numbers. What are your thoughts? Yep, Hall of Famer, lifetime three or 6 batting average, three batting titles, MVP in 2009, four top ten finishes MVP 6 time all star 2123 career hits, which is 623 more than buster. In his career, 921 games at catchers, 6 O three at first base, posey had more games at catcher in his career, 1093, 229 games at first, but Joe mauer and his time as they catch her was a difference maker. You know, the other day I was texting back and forth with Bruce bochy, and he talked about what an advantage it always was for the Giants that they had an elite offensive player at catcher and the same is true for the twins. Let's go to Brian at a player to be named later, Brian writes in love the show. Can we talk about unicorn Joey Gallo back to back gold glove winner elite feet per second rate and bottom 1% in strikeouts ever seen this combo before? No, not with somebody that big. Well, actually, you know, when Aaron judge is a little bit like that, you know, in terms of his athleticism, but I remember when Joey first came to the big leagues and you see this hulking guys huge. And I was talking with John Daniels, the general manager of the rangers, and he was talking about how like Joey's a much better athlete than anybody realized his boy was he right. Let's go to Don Irvine. What's up, Don? Don writes in, now that Kyle schwarber is a free agent, do you see him signing with an AL team to serve as a DH rather than the NL considering his defensive deficiencies and will he get a multiyear deal considering his 2021 season? Yep, he'll get a multiyear deal, I think there's going to be universal BH for 2022. So he'll consider offers from teams in both leagues. Mister jakey RS at mister JK RS writes in, now that the season is over, what's the feeling on the crackdown over foreign substances after all the grumbling? Do you think it had an impact on the game? Was there a big enough sample size? Yeah, I think there was. It was clear that there were pictures affected by it. You know, spin rates, you could tell that some pictures were affected by it. You know, we had Alex Avila on the podcast and he acknowledged and agreed with what I saw down the stretch that there were a lot of pictures who actually using foreign substances, good old fashioned bullfrog, that sort of thing. I think they found a middle ground. I really hope that they settle this issue because it really is unfair to all of them. As I said during the year when people would talk about someone like a Scherzer or Garrett Cole as a cheater, I'd be like, I mean, 90% of the pictures were using something. And I really would love to get past the conversation. Last one for today, Matt, but covered in confetti at kayaking Smith rates and there's been talk on the pod that Seattle, Texas and Miami may make some splashes this off season. But what teams would be should be worried about setting up to tank next year. I feel like the cubs, guardians nationals and reds are candidates. Congrats on the braves, World Series there mat hope you enjoyed your celebrations. Yeah, absolutely. Look, the guardians don't tank. When we talk about tanking and Taylor sorry to pick a scab for you, I mean, we look at what the Orioles have done a recent years. We looked at what the Astros did in the early 2010s. The last time the Indians lost a hundred games was 1991. The Indians excuse me, the guardians retooled. The athletics retooled. They don't tank. The Orioles, there's absolutely no sign that they're going to veer from their strategy, which means, I'd say right now, whatever the over under is in Vegas, if you want to retire, I think you bet the under on whatever Vegas comes up with your team, what do you think? Oh, yeah, empty account. Bet it all buster bet it all on that under. I'm gonna check that out after we're done. I'm sure it's not up yet, but the second it is, you know where you define me. So thanks for writing everyone. Hashtag bleacher tweets on Twitter. Again, we're gonna do another show. Next Friday, we had a great batch of tweets this week, so keep them coming throughout the week and please follow rate and review this podcast wherever you listen to your podcasts. And just to touch on a couple of other teams real quick, Luis Castillo and Sonny gray, two guys to watch for the reds, I'm curious to see if they trade them. If they do, then you wonder if they're going to be retooling. They have too many good position players to actually go into full on tank. And I think the what to watch for for the cubs, do they make a major expenditure? You know, it was a good sign that they're not tanking that they picked up wade Miley. Before we go, I just want to mention we got sad news yesterday, Pedro Feliciano, longtime left handed pitcher passed away at age 45 and his sleep at word of Perez colleague tweeted out that news, I didn't really know him that well, but everybody that did know him better than I just they were heartbroken yesterday. So our thoughts go out to the family of Pedro Feliciano. My thanks to date to Carl to hambo to Taylor have a great day to everybody. Thanks for listening. Stay safe and remember, Hayden inequality based on skin color is something we need to fight against every single day. Thanks for listening to the baseball tonight podcast. If you're.

When you're like you're hung over. You need to drink water. You might not want to write and then getting high. The range is out of the West Coast that late game the home run didn't come like you said until the ninth game, the Rangers lost 3 to 1 but gallows in his own his six homer in four games. And it's great while he's crushing the ball. But, you know, with the Rangers in last place in the L West, already 31 49 3 months of baseball to go, somebody's going to come along to John Daniels and try and get him in a trade, and he might have to consider it and go to a team that's winning. Instead of losing, like the Rangers are Rick Carlisle has moved on, as everybody knows, yesterday, said his opportunity to return to the Pacers in Indianapolis. Very, very special. It's either going to be a train record. It's going to be really good. Yeah. Sanders was apparently involved in the search process that brought Campbell to Detroit back in January. Yeah. Lions haven't won a division title since 1993 wow. Member. He wanted to bring the real lion out to practice. Yes, I mean, it's going to be a genius or a train wreck. One of the two I wonder. "Is a Bloomberg law Special report speaking with black boyars from all corners of the industry, covering stories of the past and hopes for the future, I'm Lisa Helen and I'm Adam Ellington. In the last segment you heard from black claw from leaders like John Daniels and Ben Wilson, who started to open the door for divers, lawyers that corporate firms in the 19 seventies and eighties In addition to these trailblazing attorneys, others were impacting the pipeline itself, including on the faculties of some of the elite law schools in the country. David Wilkins is a professor at Harvard Law School in Vice Dean for global initiatives on the legal profession. He's also a third generation lawyer, which puts him in a pretty unique category for black lawyer in the years just following the civil rights movement. My grandfather was a lawyer. My father was a lawyer. My uncle was a lawyer. So law was always around in my family, Like many black lawyers in the fifties and sixties defense father initially ran a small practice representing black clients in in Iran, Chicago he represented Small black businesses and black individuals and things like probate and trust in the states and contract negotiation. He really did kind of Waterfront, and you know it was a very challenging practices. Solo Breakfast always is particularly for black lawyers. In addition to his family, Wilkins was inspired to pursue a career in law by the achievements of Justice Thurgood Marshall and wait for it his father's favorite TV show. I always say that I really had to big inspirations for becoming a lawyer. The first was Thurgood Marshall on and you know the legal crusade for equality in America, and the other was Perry Mason, which was my father's favorite show, and we used to watch it every he we Like his father and uncle. Wilkins also went to Harvard law. After graduating in 1980, he was selected for a coveted clerkship on the Supreme Court clerking with none other than his childhood idol Justice Thurgood Marshall. People always ask me, you know what were the great cases that you worked on? Are the great Descents and the great arguments that you saw. You know, there were plenty of those things. But that isn't what I remember the boat start thinking the most valuable. It was the fact that every afternoon about four o'clock in the afternoon and justice Marshall and walk into the the clerks room from his grand office, and there was a big, comfy chair and he would sit down and he would tell stories. At first I thought that those stories were really just wonderful because they were wonderful stories that they really didn't have anything to do with the substance of the clerkship. But what I came to realize was actually they were at the very essence of what Justice Marshall, a great lawyer and a great judge, which is he understood. The art of hearing and understanding the stories of real human beings and translating them into legal argument and Legal doctor in and supreme court opinions, and I think that is exactly why he is the greatest justice who ever lived. In addition to the justices went Wilkins Awesome. Zehr Marshall strong, independent streak, whether that involved writing strong Descents or letting his clerks know who was boss. You know, we would be arguing with him about. You know, Judge, you know you have to do this. You have to take this position. You have to join this position or whatever. And it's uh, Boyd. Every herded off, he would just say, you know, I only really have to do two things. Stay black and die and pretty much that was the end of the discussion. After working for small firm in DC Wilkins was recruited to join the faculty of Harvard law. At the time, the faculties of elite law schools had remained very white. To his credit. Jim born Berg, who had been in the Robert Kennedy Justice Department and made his career is a civil rights lawyer, You know, and prosecuting civil rights cases, he didn't want to preside over a law school faculty that had no blacks. Warren Berg was the dean of Harvard Law School from 1981 to 1989. And so he literally started calling the up all the black students who had graduated from Harvard Law School recently, who had done well on black, who had done well in other places like that little school in New Haven, Connecticut. And in short order, you know, he hired he hired Chris Edley ready. Kennedy, Charles Ogletree and me. This is true affirmative action, Meaning he found me. He called me up. He recognized that I was qualified. It was a Supreme Court locker got bit on the large. You had a good record. I was in a good life for but if he had reached out never would happen. Coming up. We're here takes them by big law hasn't been able to solve its diversity challenges elements Sal from the nation, Hoover's Tony West and others way in. That's straight ahead on this Bloomberg law Special report, speaking with black lawyers, from all corners of the.

Don see where his ceiling is just only means that he's going to be a lot more playing time in the future. I the first round pick lexi punkish ski. He locked joined the g. League bubble in orlando a played a lot of rotation on so far this year too. So that'd be a good development form. They are excited. Probably gonna back after the bubble to see how he can help. Impact the end of the season going into next season and the thunder just continue to develop their youth. And they're just trying to build that team around Alexander he's really turning into a leader and he's really proving that you know he can. He can lead this team. I mean they're eight and eleven and honestly being very honest with you. Don't have that much talent on that team right now. It's all along a youth development and showing showing that they're near five hundred. It's law goes on shoulders on caring team right now and for that for them to kind of fight. Flip tennessee in the playoffs. They're they're really to grind and fight for that. I can definitely see them. Possibly making the ninth tenth seat. Maybe over portland just because of portland's injuries and thunder young team. They play hard. They really nothing to lose on. Second really see them. Maybe maybe fighting for the last playoff spot with minnesota look up and down season is well. Man minnesota's disappointing. Pick on these played well above expectations and even got a couple of spots starts on cuts absence beasley has been also a very bright bright spot on these chasing the most improved player more right now averaging nearly twenty points a game at any showing he can beat their option once fully healthy they do need to improve on defense on the wing defense. Especially if it's it's looking like law season are ready for them. Unfortunately i'm so much show to where head coach ryan sent. Saunders might be on the hot seat entering his third season. I mean he's having a win percentage of like twenty five percent which really really bad To be very honest with you. But i don't think it's entirely his fault there. I think the past couple of years especially they were going through a rebuild the quote unquote the real and also this year. That high expectations but have hudson setbacks so when he doesn't full roster talent on his disposal..
