"Four four. John Cox in studios running for the governorship here and California running against Gavin news, you guys, of course, Novum had my run ins with news. Good. See John Cox v with you. I'm looking forward to this. I had no pre- anything with Gavin Newsom. I started asking about traffic. And then he started telling me essentially didn't care about traffic, and he sort of mocked me are said he read a bumper sticker, which is like you you don't like traffic, but you are traffic or something like anyone who I'm commuting to work like he kind of angered me. And then later on he just shouted out that half, a black and Hispanic people didn't have access to checking accounts. And then we started arguing and it sort of devolved from there. Well, anybody who's been on these slow moving parking lot known as the five or any other highway in LA knows that you have to care about traffic as it hits every part of your life. It's one of those things that's kinda like super high gas prices. It's it's it hits poor people in a weird way. I mean like I sit in traffic. I oftentimes just sit on my phone, and I like roll calls and take care of business. I. Talked to my system written a book sitting in traffic. But poor guy the gardening truck that guys just stuck. He's not getting anything done. He's got to get to the next gig to make money. I'm actually doing something from my coffin parked on the four or five not only that he's got two jobs because he can't make California's cost living with just one job. So he's trying to get from one job to the other. And he's not getting it done. And what is he going to do? And of course, he's away from his family. So it's a family values component to this. It's a general. It's weird. It's like traffic is one of those things that sort of just like bad water bad air or something it just kind of. It's it's just permeates. Everybody's bad for everyone who's in that environment. Now, I don't know why it's never high up on anyone's list of things to discuss it would seem like with the worst traffic in the world. At least I'm talking about Los Angeles. Well, you know this. That the environmentalists first of all don't like cars at all. So they are hoping maybe the traffic is so bad that people just abandon their cars and just don't drive many more. But of course, that's not the real world because people do have to get from one place to another. They have to get those jobs, and so they have to drive. I don't know if you know this, but SP one the gas tax repeal that that probably gas tax. Yeah. Projects prop six is the way to repeal SP one. But SP one basically said, no added capacity. You could not add capacity. And that's because they don't want to encourage people to use cars, they want the, you know, the the expressways to be parking, lots does extent the speaking of Cal trans and the stretch of five behind me that is just been worked on for a million years, and they never get anywhere. Tell me about what you know about Cal trans, you know. And the thing about that, Adam as you know, I grew up not in California. I grew up in the state of Illinois, which has.

"Sometimes they don't. Came out and did like five minutes of questions with there's a bunch of reporters there TV reporters in print reporters, and then Cox made a beeline for the green room at K Q A D, you know, the room work like guests on the shows any lock the door. And they're in there for like, fifteen minutes what the hell's going on? So we all I camped out. So that's the worst thing you can do is not come out, and even just, you know, five minutes worth goofy questions, and then you know, it looks so then he leaves. And then he he tries to get out of the building. So like twenty reporters chasing him down with in. Everybody's got their Cameron videoing and the courts, the TD people love this. Because it's because that's the only video they have because there's sitting in a room like a sequestered away from the radio debate. So. So they're all gonna show this debate of him walking down the the hall, you know, answering questions as he's walkaway then getting into an elevator and waving as reporters like away. So that may be the image of John Cox on our local evening news around California today, as we know Joe and politics oftentimes op optics is everything affects everything even utter radio debates. All right, John. Thanks so much fun. And well, we may have one more debate. Hopefully, we might have a Senate debate coming up in a couple of weeks or keeping our fingers crops. I know there's a couple of offers out there, including one that the chronicle is involved with with FOX affiliate in LA care. KTV us involved here. It would be at USC and we're waiting for word from Senator Dianne Feinstein, which it'd be interesting to see after sheaves certainly was center of attention last week in the cabinet hearings. Yes. Whether she would be wanna come face the voters on statewide. Yes. She got she got a lot of free media there. But not all of a good. You know, it's gonna be interesting. This obviously would be topic of separate podcasts. Whether that may help Kevin daily own with Republican voters. He'll a protest vote against pines something to watch yet because he's already getting a lot of Republican voters who obviously a dull. Know about his platform because it's even to the left of Feinstein. So they're just looking at someone who's not an Feinstein, John. Thank you so much. Always a pleasure. Joe? Thank you. John D S for joining me today. It's always fun to chat about politics with you. And thank you for Nando de as today. "Welcome to this edition of opinion central. I've John D as the Chronicle's editorial page editor with me is Joe garafolo, the chronicles senior political writer, and we're here to talk about the debate. Between the great radio debate between Gavin Newsom and John Cox. All right. So what did we learn from the great radio debate? At first of all let's start out by your take on the fact that this was a radio debate. Go ahead. It's it's nineteen fifty-six all over again show. I mean here we have a radio only debate it ten in the morning, we're instead of actually seeing these two candidates for office for just forced to kind of visualize them. I felt like it was back in the nineteen sixties by listening to giant's game with press Hodges in Lon Simmons or else the back where they weren't even at the ballpark, and they had to recreate the sounds of the bat. Oh, it's feel Ronald Reagan Reagan doing that. So. Before we just talk about the meat of the debate. Why why does this happen? Because basically there was a CNN debate was scheduled. But then Cox backed out of it. But but he is wanted five debates Newsom hasn't wanted. Correct. Exactly. Kevin Newsome had no intention. He if he had his he would not debate at all. I think at least strategists would would say that because he has a big lead Napoles really nothing to lose. You look at the the voter registration demographics of the state. It said democrat. It's Democrats seat base. John Cox claimed to wanna have all these debates, but the one debate that they did have scheduled. He he ducked out. Which was weird. I still don't quite understand. Why did that he no he was afraid that it would all be about national issues, and he would be tagged as being a puppet of Trump, which he was tagged with anyways today in today's debate. All right. So what did you learn? What did we learn as voters from today's debate? Well, one thing I learn. And in listening to this debate is that John Cox was very fortunate that he did not get what he wished for. And that was a series of debates with Gavin Newsom. It was really the difference between the two is really profound. Gavin Newsom experience came through his ability articulate his positions came through and frankly has comfort with his positions timing again, John Cox was on the on the defensive trying to defend things he'd send the past. Right. And he was anytime the the conversation would steer towards any kind of social issue or even any even whether it be abortion rights gun rights climate change, Cox would transferred back to the the the issue that they essentially greed on which was affordability is the major crisis face in California today. What was he doing? Well, in fact, Joe at one point when when Gavin Newsom was going chapter verse on Cox's pass statements. Gun laws, basically saying that or waste of time. Cox's response was I'm not running to change one iota. I am not now what candidate gains by saying. If I'm elected, I'm not gonna change anything on this. You know, I read them into the one was about social issues though, that is the about social it's not about other stuff. Well. Yeah. Clear, but still still saying that is he wants us to be a one issue campaign and any Cox does heavy an avenue to get Newsom. And it's a decent one. I think where he says, hey, Democrats own the state the one out of every five people was living in poverty, the homeless rate is skyrocketing..

"Gubernatorial debate from the two would like to be governor. The Lieutenant governor Gavin nuisance Newsome who has been there for eight years. And is now out there promoting that if you vote for him, it's going to be change. I'm trying to figure out how that works when you've been there. I know the Lieutenant governor spot is not all that. Powerful. But then John Cox businessman. Friend of ours. Been on the show often every time we have him on. We say Gavin come on. But Gavin would rather run the free, polished. So new some agreed to one debate. They stuck in the middle of the day today's nobody will notice, but we're monitoring. So what have you seen so far in some of the Twitter feeds from journalists sewing monitoring someone from the LA times who's focusing on some key answers, not exactly word for word. But they're saying when asked to explain his vision for California Gavin Newsom says the defining issue is wealth disparity in inequality and John Cox emphasizes affordability issue. So there's some parallel there so any job inequality. So Newsom that tells me that he knows that some of these polls that have actually tightened and doesn't show that Cox is just you know, useless, or whatever because he's talking about the to California that tells me Newsom is responding to a, yeah, I'm aware of that too. Because Cox's out there saying the forgotten Californian, and he's referring to the homeless camps that have really proliferated big time. We know that a third of all the US homelessness is in California. And despite all of our great programs. What are we have? We have bigger problems than we had. Well, when Gavin Newsom became Lieutenant governor, and that that's what Cox is trying to point out. And I'll tell you you put these two in a row Gavin Newsom is really really polished and professional you could say slick Cox said his own he has his own idiosyncrasies to. But but I actually been known John for years, and he was involved in politics before he decided to run for anything, but he moved here from Illinois smart guy. But the Newsome gets his own. I think he's regretting that he ran those ads to get rid of via reducing the primary that pumped up. John cox. Those are ads by Newsom. Look like is promoting John Cox. So they can turn that around. California primary election 2018: A look at the turnout
"The john batchelor show elizabeth peak peak for fox news my colleague we turn to the results from the primaries of these last days especially the california primary this i report to you having talked to bill whelan of the hoover institution that the turnout in a race that had villa ragusa the popular mayor of los angeles on the ticket running for governor on a ticket that would could have frozen out all republicans at the gubernatorial level there were ordinary turnouts that's what bill reports to me that the hispanic vote and the least educated at least likely to vote vote in a midterm did not turn out in any extraordinary number despite the fact that villarreal gaza was on the ticket and that the republican entry a man from illinois john cox is on the ticket making a success for the republicans they have a straight republican ticket devote a surprise to everybody against gavin newsom in addition john fund of the national review online reports to me about the the primaries that of the seven congressional districts that nancy pelosi says she can flip suburban districts that voted for mrs clinton in the two thousand sixteen election over donald trump six of them six of the seven had a bigger republican vote than democratic vote which john tells me has heretofore been predictive of the final because it's a jungle primary out there on the final results so right now that blue wave that we watched disappear a couple of weeks ago that blue wave is is looking like just a ripple very small yeah i thought that california results were interesting everyone was really focused on that jungle primary and the possibility that so many democrats running in some of those districts that you might end up with two republicans at the top of the ticket they didn't have that they didn't suffer that indignity they do have a democrat on most of those platforms running but as you point out on almost all of them the republican.

"Com it's great lots of information what's happening here in our state david dish coming on the show appreciate your time good to be here you for the put out absolutely i must subscriber myself and i now look i wanna i wanna jump into something though because we we have a we have a senate race we have a governor's race and i've interviewed a few of the people in the governor's race in my one popped in i interviewed him in any dropped out and i'm just wondering if you've blame gogo sees dropping out on his interview here on keijiro uh it's hard well they'll go she says it's because he can't get anybody interested in fundraising so uh if i guess the funders weren't listening and he had a bad night maybe maybe you could blame it on that yeah something like that but soon so what's going on with the governor's race me we have gavin new some right who's the we as this lease up here in northern california percent in central for that matter male i even cautioned on the word central gavin's got the name recognition appear vera go says the name recognition down in la which is a huge number of voters the republicans have i've interviewed john cox we are dug it what's going on with the governor's race though it seems like there should be a lot more happening at this point but it's did but there isn't well to really important things that happened in the last few weeks the the first is doug go dropping out and the second is amanda renteria the former hillary clinton campaign age getting into the race and the reason why it's so important is that the the whole question about the june primary is whether you know it due to democrats advances it gavin new some and antonio have you ever go so dancing to the news on blew off or uh you can't a republican get enough votes to to break through into the into the top two two you know runoff and it's possible if there are few uh you know if there are only a few or one or two republicans running and there are many many democrats running that that could happen so olshey dropping out and another democrat joining hopes the mouth for a republican getting through it i'm not saying it's going to happen but it it becomes a little bit more likely.
