Conscience of the Country: A Tribute to John Lewis

"Congressman John Robert Louis was born in Troy Alabama on February twenty first nineteen, forty, two sharecroppers, Willie Mae, and Eddie Lewis. He is known for telling the story of preaching chickens at the boy from troy as he was nicknamed went on to become revered world leader and fearless advocate for voting rights organizing sit ins in. Nashville in nineteen sixty and becoming one of the original freedom writers Mr Lewis joined the Movement for civil rights and never looked back. As the chairman of snake he served as the youngest speaker at the march on Washington in nineteen, sixty three. In nineteen, sixty, five alongside reverend hosea, Williams Congressman Lewis led a march for voting rights across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma Alabama where he endured violent attacks by state troopers and vigilantes. Mr. Lewis fell to the ground with a fractured skull and five months later, president Lyndon B, Johnson signed the voting rights act of nineteen, sixty five until now. On the other side of that bridge Mr Lewis marched on into a life in career of activism and public service. He lost his first attempt at running for Congress in nineteen seventy seven was appointed the same year by President Jimmy Carter to the Director of action a Federal Agency for volunteerism. He then won a seat on the Atlantic City Council in nineteen eighty one and five years later ran for Congress in one. So much of the conversation about congressman, John. Lewis has been about his activism, but he stood on so many legislative accomplishments including sponsoring or co sponsoring more than eleven hundred bills. One of the most notable bills gave us the National Museum of African American History and culture in two thousand three. He served as a subcommittee chair for oversight for the prestigious ways and means. Committee, and after the retirement of Congressman John Conyers. became the dean of the Congressional. Black Caucus in twenty nineteen, he presided over the House floor as Congress passed hr four. Since his passing the bill was renamed the John Lewis Voting Rights Act which was adopted by unanimous consent. Before being admitted to the hospital, MR? Lewis stood in the heart of Black Lives Matter Plaza. He took his last breath on July seventeenth twenty twenty. But his legacy lives on in all of us. We begin this John Lewis. Tribu. where he also began with civil rights joining me for this very important conversation are Vanita Gupta President and CEO of the Leadership Conference on civil and Human Rights Derek Johnson, president and CEO of the of Lacey Pe-. Reverend, Michael Pfleger the senior pastor of the faith community of Saint. SAVINA. Reverend Dr William J Barbour, the second president of repairs of the breach and Co Chair of the poor people's campaign. An latasha Brown, Co founder and chief doer of black voters matter. A thank you all so much for making time to talk with me today about on. John Lewis. So I want to start with I'm. VANITA. Because of your work at the Department of Justice of course. I believe the year before you got to DOJ. The the case, the decision that gutted the voting rights act shelby versus holder, and so I wanna hear from you on some of the things that you experienced working with Mr Lewis on the other side of that because we know that right after that, all of the advocacy picked up to reinstate section five to get the voting rights on provision where they needed to be in Congress. And so just talk a little bit about some of your work with Mr Lewis on those issues. Shore. Is Truly an honor to be here with my. Warrior colleagues and friends and loved ones in the movement. Especially on today Angela. I think probably all of us were in tears watching Mr Lewis Funeral you know twenty thirteen is you mentioned that United States Supreme Court gutted the heart of the voting rights act in a devastating decision the shelby county versus holder decision. That really took away the longstanding tool of one of the most effective pieces of federal legislation in our nation's history in the voting rights act. That quired states with long histories of racial discrimination in voting to pre clear with the United States Justice Department changes made at the local level for election practices that had racially discriminatory impact. And the removal of that tool within hours of that decision coming down for the United. States. Court states like, North Carolina Texas enacted, Monster? Voter. Laws doing everything from. Putting forth restrictive voting laws cutting back early voting same day registration. And it took years to litigate and to hamlet the Justice Department did working with advocates and activists in all states. Where so years for federal courts in a place like North Carolina finally say that the State legislators North Carolina had enacted there. Monster Voter Suppression Law would such surgical precision to disenfranchise African Americans and meanwhile countless elections had taken place but Mr Lewis of legacy was that in the face of this overwhelmingly bad decision for voting rights he immediately. Went to action, which is always his way was never in a would not allow despair to hold him back inside we need to do everything we can restore it in went to work with legislative partners in the Congressional Black Caucus to put forth a bill immediately to restore it on every prior reauthorization of the voting. Rights. Act angelides always been done under. The Watch of Republican president and at least one house of Congress being Republican the unfortunate thing is after this decision, the really has not been bipartisan support and but Mr Lewis Year after year would stand at the podium introduced the law in say or in it for the long haul I've been there before I almost lost my life fighting for this law. In one, thousand, nine, sixty five, and we will persevere to us and we've got to keep our eye on the prize and we're not gonNA. Let go until the day that the bill becomes law. So in this moment. On where we're seeing a lot of performance morning by Senate Republicans who obstructed day after day everything that he has stood for and fought for with his life. It is time not only for us to restore the voting rights act passed the voting rights advancement act but to do everything else that we can to ensure open voting and go beyond it as President Obama said today won't be enough to rest and return to the status quo. It is time for this country to unregarded into make our democracy work for all of us in Gulf Far Beyon- restoration of the voting rights act in this moment.

Rep. Katie Hill resigns amid claims she was involved in romantic 'throuple' with staffer

"This resignation of congresswoman Katie hill I would have thought it was a slam dunk okay you in such mission guy few relationship first the she was an open bisexual okay no problem young congresswoman California rising democratic star the same ages like AOC in the squad thirty one thirty but she had a relationship there was her husband and there was a female staff member right and apparently they had no problem exploiting that taking pictures of it sort of the threesome that they were in trouble from point never heard that I hadn't either but it's a thing seems like California has a growing wave of this it's all over the country because it's not just California all right and what exactly is a fraud pulled into the I. more knowledgeable I'm just reading about it I guess it's just a when a couple brings a third person into the relationship not just for a one night stand three some but for actual the it's it's your relationship you have relationships with them I mean and it sounds as though she it Katie still have the relationship with the staffer well the husband I I don't know I wasn't in there but that's what I'm that's what I'm understanding get all three of them a swapping spit from that I mean I guess so but so she has admitted that that that that is true there's another accusation against her that she had another improper relationship with one of her congressional staffers she is denying that she's that didn't happen she said all of these pictures that have been leaked on the internet have been leaked find her now estranged husband who she says is abusing her and is basically trying to ruin her life and so she decided she was going to resign I mean that what there's a couple things going on here number one is she being fought shamed I mean that's all over the place because people seem to be less interested in the aspect of her having inappropriate relationships with people that are server under her then they are interested in pictures that are being put out there by her allegedly ex husband they clearly talk with one another that they shared with one another they clearly now or she's claiming a part of a right in line right wing conspiracy to destroy her well I don't know I mean I don't know how it's a right wing to what has been like I know but these things right but the the form that they came out was a right wing website so she's claiming this is all a Kabam my husband the right wing web site and sentiments of lady in fact let's listen to ad she talks about her resignation from the house last night I announce the most difficult decision of my life that I would be resigning from Congress I made this decision so that my supporters my family my staff and our community will no longer be subjected to the pain inflicted by my abusive husband and the brutality of hateful political operatives in women as she won what was to come on Republican district in that mid term election is some Democrats got into their house seats as a result of that then she spoke of the abuse of this this coordinated campaign carried out by the right wing media and Republican opponents enabling and perpetuating my husband's abuse by providing him a platform is disgusting and unforgivable and they will be held accountable well I would imagine that it wouldn't just be right wing platforms I mean anybody that would get this information will probably have a have a have put it out there well but then again she looking for some sympathy and empathy and she says this is a case of revenge porn she's a victim of this some people call this electronic assault digital exploitation others call it revenge porn as the victim of it I call it one of the worst things that we can do to our sisters and our daughters I am grateful for all of you who have spoken out about this in recent days as I have before I will stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves because there is one thing that I know for sure I will allow my experience to scare off other young women or girls from running for office for the sake of all of us we cannot let that happen she's trying to control the narrative and she's trying to control the narrative in a way that makes her look like a hero and a victim who is now going to go after people who put out revenge porn on their exes but the fact is that she had an inappropriate relationship with either one or two staffers of hers and this is accountability I don't she's being held accountable okay she gets it and neither does Camelia Harris com on her hello Larry former Attorney General California US Senate a California now running for the democratic nomination was whose lent her voice to supporting congresswoman Katie hill on this is sort of like with the death of John Conyers he had staff people on board for many years he was the dean of Congress then he had taken advantage up that once he had taken advantage of them he had them signing non disclosure agreements that pulls Bonham the speak where the house at the time the Republican the time being and before that pelo C. kept a slush fund to keep these mail congressman asa harm's way both Democrats and Republicans in that recently came all to light so why is it she thinks she's being you can't have it both ways you can't have it both ways if this was a man who is accused of having a relationship with a staffer he would be in trouble too you're not supposed to have relationships with people that serve under you whether they're your employee whether they're your skin rational staffer it's inappropriate and it creates a dangerous situations because it could be used for bed coercion you know you got you got an issue of power being held over somebody and if that somebody wants to keep their job they're gonna feel pressure to basically Chile to the person who is in power and what does it say about the old sure religious the Mormons or even the Muslims who believe you could have multiple wives live polygamists lifestyle our country said no especially in running for political office these are not formal marriage so for instance when we see these whether they call them again troubles they seem to be always two women and one man and it seems like the man can do whatever he wants he can go outside of the relationship have sex with a man or a woman and likewise a woman can go outside of their relationship and have sex with a man or woman but it's often times the woman who's bringing a woman into the relationship where all three live together although they're not formally getting married I don't think they can they can get married yeah well I married couple getting married again I'm figuring California would end up doing that well I know that there are there are stories I read the New York Post and I've seen some crazy stories about the sexual lives of new Yorkers a particularly here in Manhattan I you know I I don't I don't understand this world it says something well look what the what a couple dozen the privacy of their own bedroom is really not my I don't really care but again it's she's acting like she's so put upon but the fact is it was with a staffer if it was some person that was outside of the the the campaign okay whatever outside of our staff none of my business I don't care but it was it with a staffer her underlings therefore inappropriate she thought she was so right she should have just run for reelection twenty twenty the house see she would've been challenged in a primary by Democrats what they know about it then then guess what if she wins the nobody can ever sit there and say well guys you know what you can date you get go hadn't date your staffers it's no big deal yeah no problem at all there's no issue of

People are again talking about slavery reparations

"The subject of reparations for slavery has now entered the presidential contest democratic candidates repeatedly asked about this subject. Supporters of some sort of reparations often point to the fact that the United States has paid them in the past the legislation that I am about to sign provides for restitution payment to each of the sixty thousand survivors, of course, former president Ronald Reagan there with that law the nation, formerly apologized to Japanese Americans for their internment in World War Two and provided token monetary compensation the debate over reparations for slavery is our topic that we're covering this week s Cokie segment and commentator Cokie Roberts is here with us. I koki. Hi, David first listener, we have a MandA Trammell. She wants to know whether all this talk of reparations is something new there ever been a serious discussion about reparations for slavery in the pet. Absolutely. A former congressman John Conyers introduced legislation in every congress from nineteen eighty nine. On to establish a commission to study and develop reparation proposals for African Americans. It was reintroduced on the first day of the current congress by Texas congresswoman, Sheila jackson-lee, some form of what you might call reparations actually dates back to the end of the civil war when general Sherman promised land, freed slaves that came to be called, forty acres immutable like many such promises it was later, broken slave owners and the district of Columbia, however were compensated when the enslaved people in the capital refrained before general emancipation will we have another listener it's Eggers. And she wanted to know what has happened to all these other efforts to achieve reparations have attempt for reparation happened before in the US. Well, as you said earlier in nineteen eighty eight a law was passed giving living Japanese Americans who had been in intern not their states twenty thousand tax free dollars each but more important to the supporters. Of the Bill was the formal apology by the government and in nineteen seventy one the Alaskan native settlement act gave native peoples to title, more than forty million acres of land and did establish a fun to somewhat compensate them for lands and rights. They had lost in nineteen Ninety-three. President Clinton signed the apology resolution to native Hawaiians for overthrowing the islands. Monarchy cook, I'm just curious have all the efforts that we've seen or talked about been federal or have there been local or other kinds of of reparations. Well, we saw last week Georgetown University students of voting to establish a fund for the descendants of the enslaved people at Georgetown who had been sold by the university, and you have states and some cities that have in fact, inactive reparations, but for very specific wrongdoings. So for Jinya, for example, pay the survivors of its forced sterilizations program and granted scholarships to the residents who have. Been denied in education when the schools were closed during the fight over immigration, Florida gave a substantial sum to the victims of the nineteen Twenty-three horrible rosewood massacre where an entire African American community was burned to the ground. But David there's so many other atrocities that are still being
