First 'murder hornet' nest in U.S. destroyed in Washington

"Asian giant hornet that invaded the U. S detected here in our state a few months ago in Markham County there last week confirmation, of course, the nest found they plan to eliminate it. And they did now, the question. To find a queen in that is there more queens are more nests by the size of a basketball contained an estimated 100 to 200 Hornets. Lot of beekeepers around Puget Sound. I know what many musicians for Bee keepers some radio people. Todd Meyers is the environmental policy director of Washington Policy Center. He's a beekeeper. He shared some knowledge and everything he's been looking at here with their murder Hornet. And talked with talk show host John Carlson of our sister station 5. 70. K V. I. He started the conversation with the capture of the live be where they used the dental floss to tie a tracer device to it. So as a flew back to the nest. Yeah, So you talked about them, tying the transmitter. There is a photo of the person who was doing that with bare hands. Squeezing the hornet on and tying it on. Just for context. If my bees decide they're grumpy at me, and I get stung about 100 times. It will be very unpleasant. But I will live. Um The Asian giant Hornet. If you get stung 5 to 10 times, it will kill you. So that gives you a sense of how dangerous they are. And so you know, whoever is being paid to hold on to one of these with their bare hands and tie on the transmitter. Is brave and probably not being paid enough. So that gives you a sense of the challenge of not just finding them, but then eradicating them because they are very dangerous. Okay. They're about twice the size of a normal hornet. Where they native to because there aren't native to here. There They are called the Asian giant Hornet. For a reason. They come from China. They're in Japan on DH. They we suspect that they came over on some sort of agricultural shipment where they hit out. The first ones were actually found on Vancouver Island near Victoria on DH. Then they have spread and so they were found in Watkins County. Andrei, Let me ask you this flat out. If they didn't get them all. And the murder. Hornets survives. What changes Ah one people need to be more careful nest because they're very dangerous beekeeper who will have to figure out a way to protect Their hives. So they come up with strategies. You know, Like I said, this in Japan and elsewhere for a while, and so there are strategies to deal with him. In fact, State Department of Agriculture talked with lots of people in Japan who have dealt with these toe learn how to deal with them here, But things will change for people and for, um Beekeeper's so But I also think you know that that we will learn how to more effectively fight them and eradicate them. So, um I think we're just We may be just the beginning. But like I said, they've learned a lot in doing this and how to be effective and hopefully they can get more effective time. Couldn't they wipe out Washington's bee population, which has already faced several threats and has, you know managed to prevail. But would wouldn't murder Hornets me? Aren't they? Like you know an invasive thiss fish species? Sometimes you know that that can do terrible damage to native born. Yeah, there's there's no doubt that it's one more threat. I would say at this point, it's still just a threat. The other thing is that I think the University of Washington maybe Washington University, rather was a great beekeeping program, did a model and found that their range would really be sort of along the coast. Down to mid organ wouldn't go beyond that. Because the habitat is just not suited for them in the climate and other things like that, so they are very serious problem, But it's not at least from their modeling doesn't indicate that it would even go to the whole state or the whole country. And and I should point out that they don't pollinate. They don't make honey, right. I mean, you know, like yellow jackets and things like that, that occasionally I see a dead bees on the front of my hive. Yellow jackets have come and killed. So it's It's a similar sort of thing.

"WNYC I'm John Carlson in an unprecedented move the MTA close the subways from one o'clock to five o'clock this morning that was in order to do extensive cleaning of trains and stations and the agency is expecting to continue doing that for every night for however long the pandemic goes on for instead of trains writers are being directed to buses and the homeless are being removed as well with the assistance of social workers and police W. in my see transportation reporter Stephen nascent went out early this morning to witness the shut down and he joins us now by Skype Hey Steven the morning sun so where were you this morning and what was the shut down like where you work I was at the Coney Island Stillwell Avenue terminal I got there around midnight nearly an hour before the shutdown and already there were dozens of police officers everywhere on platforms at the turnstiles on trains they're also nearly as many on house people in various conditions as well from people should listen confused to fairly well organized but also confuse that they had to leave her police and a small handful of social workers are explaining to them that the station was closing and asking them if they want to go to a shelter or hospital some people took one of those or none as one o'clock drew near and the last trains pulled in the police were more assertive that getting people off trains I don't see any arrests or ticketing though but a lot of folks that didn't move along fast enough heard that you're splitting Clank of a metal flashlight hitting a subway pole increase archer them off and then the police put up pink tape at the turnstiles drag barricades in front of the entrances and that was it subway service is closed for the night so you just spoke a lot about the the homeless situation people being moved out of the stations can you talk about the cleaning I mean that was the point of this whole thing right what I saw was what they've been doing every day since the pandemic began more or less using a spray bottle some whites and elbow grease with another reporter out last night Jake often hurts was in lower Manhattan and he saw the same thing I think what's different about the cleaning now is that workers aren't cleaning around homeless people who refuse to leave the train so they can do a more thorough job when the train to get to the yard and a parked overnight that's a look at the more thorough scrubbing we're told about but the trains I thought Coney Island we're just getting a surface wipe on the benches in polls gives you did send video around to the media that showed workers and hazmat suits spring down trees at ninety sixth street hi N. as you've been reporting subways were shut down on very short notice governor Cuomo ordered the MTA last week to come up with the plan in just one day so now that you see this all go down how did it go and what happened all the riders who rely on that overnight service well I didn't run into any essential workers in Coney Island trying to get home but there were a handful of people who showed up on aware that the subways were closing or had no idea how to get home like this man I spoke with who actually works for the MTA didn't want his name used because of that but she was frustrated that amidst all the chaos of closing it down there is no actual information about how to actually get home nobody's standing around the wrecked in anybody telling me what sorry what boss how to get home everybody everybody is so busy right now nobody thought it means nobody's been in the office take this bus it is both of his boss and it's true I didn't see any signs there was a ticket booth agent advising people one writer another person was told there's a shuttle bus to Manhattan but another anti worker told him there wasn't and that he needed to take three different bosses the M. C. admits this is very much a work in progress they're adding express buses and more buses to the typical evening routes to cut down on wait times they also have a program in which riders can get one free taxi ride at night that's for people whose commute takes more than an hour and twenty minutes or would require more than two transfers one MTA gadfly who works at the Amazon warehouse on Staten Island had trouble all night signing up for this program but after tweeting about his issues he says he got help from the president of New York City transit herself most new Yorkers don't get access like that help and she did get a card to work he tells me but it's not clear yet how many people qualified to got Texas last night Sarah Myers the chief customer officer at the MTA wrote that booking cars for writers is quote an action that goes against every bone in my body but we are doing it tomorrow so in the last few seconds that we have here Stephen obviously we don't know how long the pandemic is gonna last for but do we have any idea how long the shutdown it is going to last the MTA won't say when it will and that it's up to health professionals to determine when it's safe but the shutdown is only made possible with an incredibly beefed up police presence more than a thousand police are now guarding stations for four hours every night across the city the NYPD says it will assess the situation in one week that's W. MIC's Steven Nissen thanks so much David thank you W.
