"The people who are around him are unquestionably all in favor of this reworking of society and using climate change and covert as the key justifications for making it happen john carey is the biggest biggest supporter of this and he is He's on the. He's in the cabinet. He's the special climate envoys for john for joe biden. He's been a close political ally of joe biden for a very long time. And he's he's pushing this more than anybody and openly telling other world leaders that joe biden supports all of this. So do i think that. Joe biden is deliberately destroying the economy. Deliberately making things worse. No what i think is happening is that they believe that this is all in the long run going to be for the better i think. Yeah they think maybe temporarily prosperity drops a little bit. Things are a little bit worse for some people and not for others. Okay yeah that's fine but society will be so much better off with us charge. Just give us enough time. It's going to be painful at the start but once we're in charge of everything and weaking turn on the money printers even more and send people cash in the mail and a lot of people don't even ever have to work a day in their lives and we're gonna save the planet from climate change and we're going to make sure everyone's taking care of and we're going to have elder care and your two year olds going to be going to school for now. The Origins of the Honey Trap

"The term honey trap has a surprisingly apt history. Like the idea of fem fatality itself. It exists somewhere at the border of fact and fiction originally coined by celebrated spy writer john carey in his nineteen seventy six novel tinker tailor soldier spy it moved from fiction to life. The intelligence community started using the term. One of the reasons it made that jump is because it's a succinct metaphor for a real long standing espionage tactic. The spy positions herself as sweet tempting delicious like honey. Her tools are charm sex or the suggestion of sex. And as they say you catch more flies with honey. Honey is also sticky. Once you're caught in it. You're as helpless as a fly to. The tactic is proved effective for many different intelligence agencies. Today even male spies can be found playing these cards but traditionally it was considered a strictly female domain. In fact the only female domain in the world of espionage and on the surface it sure did seem like a lovely gig one overflowing with alcohol sex a good time and targets who had no idea that their momentary pleasure was as dangerous as a knife at the throat.

Quim Torra, the president of the regional government of Catalonia, has officially been disqualified from office

"Last November in the build up to a general election in Spain Kim Torah, the president of the Regional Government of Catalonia hung a banner on the building in which the government sits demanding the freedom of certain of his colleagues presently in prison or in exile, and what we are going to ask Mister Sanchez. Okay. Obviously and of repression to sit together in these table of negotiations with no conditions that means that we are going to put on. The table, these referendum, these right of Catalonia to self determination, and we want to ask Mr Scientific for the amnesty for our colleagues imprison this week. This act appears to have caused cream Torah his job Spain's Supreme Court has upheld a previous decision banning him from public office eighteen months a consequence of him disobeying an earlier court order to remove the poster which was held to violate election laws against displaying political materials in were indeed on public buildings. He was also fine. Thirty thousand euros treated to a judicial wigging for his quote stubborn blunt repeated and obstinate on quote refusal to do as he was told. Others naturally be afraid of these magistrates if the Supreme Court would decide whether to disqualify democratic and legitimate president for having defended freedom of expression justice prisoners, coalitions, and the return of the exiles these traits today have in their hands. Something much more important than my political futures wanted. Not For any banner. But for banner that defended the fundamental rights denied I mean stylish kitchen. Inevitably given the nature of populist nationalist movements of the tight which Mr Tara leads he and his supporters will regard this damnation as a ringing endorsement. The practical upshot of this decision is that Catalonia has a new acting president, vice president and Economy Minister Arrogance and the Embassy of Catalan independence have been stoked once again with potentially combustible consequences. For Listeners who've been sufficiently bewildered by recent global events that decathlon succession crisis feels like something that happened circa the battle of Salamanca as opposed to three years ago a brisk recap is possibly in order. In October, two thousand and seventeen, the procession regional government of Catalonia through a referendum on independence. This vote had already been declared illegitimate by Spain's national government ruled illegal by Spain's constitutional. Court. and was widely boycotted by pro unionists within Catalonia. What they are pushing is not democracy it's a mockery of democracy travesty of democracy. Referendum do not equal or do not equate democracy. The result was ninety percent in favor of independence but on a turnout of only forty three percent. Nevertheless on October twenty, seventh, two, thousand and Seventeen Catalonia's parliament. Independence Solutia. The COLOSIO Delta repetant parliamentary get rather sit down. Though in Punta. The worst Zimba. Spain's national government was unimpressed by this and accordingly sacked Catalonia's leaders dissolved its parliament and instituted direct rule from Madrid Catalonia's. Can Preach Demont and a few other putative architects of the Catalan nation skipped the country. Wisely, it turned out those who stayed were arrested and charged with treason several received hefty prison sentences including Catalan vice president, Auriol Carris, currently serving thirteen years. President preached amount remains in exile in Belgium from where he has managed to get elected to European Parliament as a representative of Spain Vice? President John Carey has also been elected to European Parliament although for obvious reasons is yet take his seat. Absolutely none of which has caused the idea of Catalan independence to go away at least not entirely though recent polls do suggest dwindling enthusiasm for the idea from nearly forty nine percent at the time of the referendum to perhaps forty two percent. Now, President Torre has strongly suggested that regional elections may be held early in two thousand, twenty one, which he is already framing as a choice as he puts it between democracy and freedom or repression and imposition. The, difficulty with this argument is that in the present dispensation, Catalonia is not short of either democracy or freedom. It is the richest part of what is by global standards a wealthy country. It enjoys considerable autonomy electing its own parliament flying signed flag, speaking its own language, controlling its own police and many of the public services, including schools and healthcare. The Catalan independence movement often looks and sounds less like some heroic struggle to slough off a brutal imperialist yoke. The net does populist insurrection like Brexit, another self indulgent tantrum thrown by the complacent citizens of a prosperous and orderly nation rebelling against some imaginary tyranny door is breaking. Independent United Kingdom. The difference of course is that Mr Torah his colleagues and supporters do have a case on the repression and imposition front as well. The referendum of two thousand and seventeen was a stunt which all, but begged Madrid to overreact and indeed. Did Not just in its heavy-handed persecutions of the independence movements, ringleaders. But in the ham-fisted response of the National Police and Guardia Civil, which left hundreds of pro-independence protestors injured and Spain's government looking like exactly the authoritarian overlords that Catalonia's government was accusing them of being. Versus the cycle of Grievance keeps turning in firing president. Torres Spain might be about to discover again the folly of punishing those who want to be punished.

Well, I'll tell you no one knows more about the impact of debates and the aftermath of debates and the process of getting ready for debates then my old, pal. And stephanie. Definitely always good to be with you, especially on the eve of debates. We've, we've done that before tell me what what's going on in, in based on your experience. We've all had them. In these among these legions of camp campaigns and candidates who are getting ready? Oh, I would imagine that people are doing some mock debates today with lots of people on stage, but primarily trying to figure out either who's gonna come at them or who they need to go after and practice practicing how you do that. With the moments are with the pivot saw, and what, what you want people to be left with one of the things that you're one of these must be working on his trying to keep these answers to sixty seconds neighborhood. We struggled with that with Obama, that was not his forte, and he didn't like it. Yeah, but it's hard you know, they're used to getting a ton of time and now they have, you know, they're gonna get gong d-. Right. I think it's going to be a particular challenge for people like mayor p Beto, and who are really known for, you know, they're thoughtful answers, which are not confined to sixty seconds other people are going to be more disciplined about it. "People to apply for the funding. The Minneapolis found his website when a skip through this puts dig against Trump here. The president's cabinet made it clear the climate change. If they'll even admitted exist is not their priority at the local level. We don't have the luxury of ignoring science. Okay. Whatever that's supposed to mean. Separately fray said the city is looking to pilot three to four new bus only lanes to speed up commutes aright, so you're gonna take an already crowded commute system, and you're going to extend you're gonna take away lanes to make commutes faster doesn't really work that way. So just so, you know, so if you cram all those privately owned vehicles into one lane they're actually gonna go slower. I don't think it takes a scientist to figure that out for you. Now, if you're saying that you just you're gonna mandate or you want more people to take public transportation, you want more people to take buses, that's fine. But don't think creating bus lanes is gonna do anything other than slow people driving. So I can tell you this experience. So I lived in the DC area and everyday the car pool lane was virtually empty while while all the other lanes were grid-locked. Okay. And this is in a town. This is in DC, you know, that had a great metro system. So just because you want people to take public transportation just because you wanna create bus lanes. People don't wanna give up their independence people wanna drive their cars. So this is it's it's a first world problem. Right. It's an example of when people have a lot of money and people could afford cars people want to drive cars Lima. Peru saw the same thing when during the Fujimori administration Ross way to him as a president Peru. They had a bit of an economic boom. And all of a sudden twice as many people could afford on cars in Lima, Peru, and all of a sudden traffic became ridiculous because there was privately owned vehicles all of the road. It's just the way it works. See what else we got here in this great speech from their village, squared Frailes applause. Introduce a new partnership between city squaring Boga. Okay. Some more initiatives that really don't have anything to with law enforcement. Okay. So let's talk about I'm not gonna read the rest of his speech because it doesn't have to the issue at hand. And I'm out here to attack him as a person of this this in. I don't it's no secret by now you guys listen to me. "But in the end, we went back to John Carey because people thought, oh, John Kerry can beat George Bush. That's the most recent analogy the question on the ideological fight is have Democrats gone further left in now, John Kerry's other the world can't win nomination. I don't think that's true. I think Democrats are going to say who can win this. And while we love Bernie, and we love some of these other candidates. Could they be to hold Trump? But that tug back and forth will be the most interesting thing to watch this primer. Okay. So Jim Messina. Let me ask you that question. You just posed can Bernie Sanders beat Donald Trump. No why I think if you look at. Swing voters in this country. They are incredibly focused on the economy you, and I've had this question before the winner of the economic argument in the last five presidential elections with swing voters has won the presidency. I think today you look at it and say the Bernie Sanders is unlikely going to be able to stand up to the constant barrage. It is Donald Trump on economic issues like that. Now that said, you know, there are other or other folks other friends of mine who believe very differently and the believe that Senator Sanders can excite a new population of people and get new new voters out. You know, there's this big fight in my party about. Do you excite the base in jack-up turnout or do you? Nominate a more mainstream candidate moderate candidates and get the swing voters. The three. Kratz who've won the presidency in my lifetime. Jimmy Carter Bill Clinton, and Brooke Obama have been able to do both into win a presidential election against Trump. You have to do. Both get excite your base and turn out people and you have to win swing putters. And we're gonna look for a nominee who can do both today. You would say in general context Bernie Sanders wouldn't be that candidate. But you know, one of the lots of people call me all the time and say oh vomit needs to, you know, get involved in this primary and get us nominee. There's too many candidates. We're going to be other senseless, you know, etc. And I don't think that's right at all. I think we need to let this process play out. And, you know, Barack Obama be Hillary Clinton in two thousand eight in the longest primary in American political history all fifty states, and we came out of that primary completely tested. We both on issues like Reverend Wright and other things. And on building a national organization, and we were ready for general election. And we're ready to take on John McCain and election, we ended up winning handily. So we're gonna find out for any senators can can move a message to both wing voters. And and his base. We're gonna find out if Joe Biden is is battle-tested we're going to figure out whether come Harrison beta Aurora can mayor Pete have the magic we think they have and a lot of these things that people like you, and I, you know, asking questions, I can Bernie win a general election. We're about to figure it out. I got my opinion. I just gave you mine, and I'm sure I'm getting killed on Twitter right now. But the great thing about this primary process is the actual voters are going to have their say, and it's going to be the most interesting primary of my lifetime. Let's take a break. And when we come back more of my conversation with Jim Messina Capital One is building a better Bank that feels and Enacts acts. nothing like a typical Bank..

Scientists we've concluded that humans are catastrophically warming earth response that conflicts with what I want to be true. So it must be false. Okay. A couple of notes on this one. Different types of scientists. Theoretical physics not quite the same thing as climatology which has a lot of intervening factors. There's broad disagreement. Among scientists about just how much global warming is being caused by human activity, and how sensitive the climate is to human activity third. One of the reasons that we are amazed by the actual production of the image of the black hole is one because the capacity of science do that is pretty incredible and two because it actually fulfilled. The prediction one of the problems a lot of critics of global warming. Literature have is that the computer modeling on global warming has not in fact, produced the picture of the black hole. If we're using the analogy, it has produced models that have been well off, for example, John Carey in two thousand nine parodying the consensus view talked about how the Arctic would be free within five years is the Arctic ice free today. It is not. Which is melting at a rate that the Arctic Ocean now increasingly exposed in five years, scientists predict we will have the first ice free Arctic summer that exposes more ocean. Sunlight ocean is dark it consumes more of the heat from the sun light, which then accelerates the rate of of the of the melting and warming.

John Carey is a combat veteran who was awarded the silver star, the bronze star, and three purple hearts for his time in Vietnam medals and injuries for which he was impugned and mocked by the Republican party. When he ran for president in two thousand four is the democratic nominee against George W Bush two thousand eight. He declined to run against himself to run again himself. He endorsed Barack Obama for president in two thousand eight. And then in Obama's second term, John Carey became secretary of state Paris climate accord, the Iran nuclear deal destruction of serious chemical weapons. The normalization of relations with Cuba. John Kerry had a very busy busy time, a secretary of state. And now he's facing questions with this new book out about whether he might run again himself to try to unseat this new president who among other things apparently sees John Kerry's list of accomplishments as his most urgent to do list for things. He wants to not just undo, but destroy joining us now is John Kerry he was the longtime Senator from Massachusetts secretary of state under President Obama. The new book is called every day extra. It's out now Senator secretary. Thank you for being here a movie to be here. Thank you. Thank you for. Diligence prosecution of truth that's not to say. I want to talk about the book. I have to ask you about a little bit of breaking news that we just had moments ago here on the show. I on a Presley just unseeded ten term, Massachusetts, democratic congressman, Michael Capuano in a democratic primary tonight. Michael Campano ten terms spin, they're twenty years. Did I on a Presley at one point work for you worked for me for a long time. I was entry level job and she worked with me until she left to run in become city councillor. What's your reaction to this news tonight? Well, you know, well, I'm excited for her shits. I'm really feeling enormous sense of pride for what she's accomplished. I personally told her that I could not get involved the campaign simply because Michael coupla was deeply supportive of me. And when I ran for president and we worked very closely together in the congress, but I. Have huge respect for which he has Chievo enormous sense of pride, and I'm very happy for I'm happy from Massachusetts, and I think Michael coupla don't give a very gracious, very honorable grownup concession speech. He will be all right, Massachusetts will be in the country will be, we'll come out of this mess, and it will be because of the Presley's and others around the country who are going to help create a new era of accountability. I'm really committed that. I write about that in the book by the way, this is part of my optimism. That's part of why say, every day is extra because we have the ability. We now have the responsibility, not just the ability to remake and re affirm our own democracy. Our democracy is deeply troubled right now deeply troubled and all over the world..

"Do you talk to John McCain from time to time? I talked to him some months ago in had a good conversation. You know, he is a, he's extrordinary American. You know, as he says in his book, you know, a fight not joined is a fight, not enjoyed. He's in a hell of a personal fight right now. And when you consider his life, you know he's somebody who put the uniform on at Annapolis new seventeen years old. And with the exception of the time, he spent his a candidate between his retirement from the navy and his swearing into the congress, except for a couple months. He spent every hour of his life in service to the United States of America, and the never be another guy like. Him a big, lice, impactful. Weiss. Would you think he hopes his legacy will be? He's speaks to it in his book that he fought the good fight. You know that he played a role that he made a difference and I was in Vietnam in April in is revered, Vietnam, and one of the most extraordinary aspects of McCain's career not. I don't think a lot of people know about notice about him, but one of his duties when he was imprisoned, he was the chaplain. But one of the things that John McCain has done throughout his life is this is this notion of forgiveness of of redemption, and along with John Carey, a man who three purple Hort silver star, combat veteran of the Vietnam war. Pete Peterson, another POW Easter men. The two senators and congressmen were instrumental in the reestablishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the United States. Yes. And this is the first generation Vietnamese. Right that that are born after nineteen eighty five in thousand years. They're living both independence and peace and they're focused on the future that you can go to Vietnam and you can see the friendship that can grow between United States. Vietnam. When you consider that there were US naval worships, including the USS John McCain, who have made port visits to Vietnam, the forgiveness, the redemption. The reconciliation is an important chapter of McCain's story..

"Well i think for you know for the average person who really doesn't understand hollywood goes how is it possible that somebody was allowed to conduct themselves that way i did want to get the story across in terms of the machines that were built around these people specifically harvey you know the the army of assistance that press the politics i mean this this is a you know john carey story in that there are politicians who look the other way there were district attorneys that look the other way there were actors agents i mean this is a massive machine and an interesting left we had former you know miramax and weinstein employees that went along with it because they just assumed that's the way the business operated and so i think for for me getting that message out in terms of the complicity of you know it's the old nancy reagan thing when it comes to drugs just say no nobody felt empowered within the hollywood infrastructure to say no agents would send artists in for meetings because the it was a commission it was you know hey you can deal with it i wanna get this deal done that's the way hollywood works and i and i think thomson port note for every one alleged victim there are hundreds that went along with it and said this is what i have to do one one woman in the film you know talented actress who you know and who went back to harvey's room or apartment wherever this happened allegedly happened set you went back four times and i asked why and she said i look i i needed the part and so that's the desperation of the business.
