"The Webb telescope's new pillars of creation picture is absolutely dazzling by Jeffrey kluger. Few people were paying much attention to the doings at the space telescope science institute on the campus of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore on April 1st, 1995. The big news that day included the end of Major League Baseball's 232 day player strike. The withdrawal of U.S. troops from Haiti after helping to support the embattled government of president John Bertrand aristide. And fresh testimony at the murder trial of one time football great O. J. Simpson, challenging his claimed whereabouts on the night his former wife and a friend of hers were killed. With all that, there was little room in the news for what astronomers Jeff Hester and Paul scowen of Arizona state university had just done, working with the STS CI. They had aimed the Hubble Space Telescope in the direction of the constellation serpents, 6500 light years from earth, and snapped a picture of a busy star forming region of the sky known as the eagle nebula. But hesters and scowls and Hubble's work would in the fullness of time far outlast the other news that broke on that spring morning 27 years ago, the picture they took promptly dubbed the pillars of creation easily became the Hubble's most iconic image. Indeed, it is one of the most iconic images in all of astronomy. Reproduced uncounted millions of times on posters, mugs, t-shirts, and more. It has pointed to as eye popping proof that when it comes to telescopes, the world of science and the world of art can sometimes be hard to distinguish. This week, the STS CI was back at work, releasing a newly taken image of the pillars of creation, this time captured by the James Webb Space Telescope, the $10 billion observatory, which was launched on Christmas Day 2021. And since July has been peering deep into the universe in a sky gazing campaign expected to last at least 20 years. Hubble's image of the pillars of creation was captured in visible light, while Webb's was taken in the infrared, revealing fresh details in the nebula that were seen less crisply before. The three signature pillars in the formation are dense clouds of gas and dust, which serve as a nursery for newly forming stars. The youngest of which are just a few hundreds of thousands of years old, compared to the estimated four and a half billion year age of earth, the tallest, and leftmost pillar stands an astounding four light years, or 24 trillion miles tall. As NASA explains in a statement accompanying the release of the image, the dust and gas is relatively cool, but heats up fast and isolated regions where the material begins to collapse together under gravitational attraction, forming the infant stars, those stars appear as scarlet dots and smudges within the body of the pillars. At the edges of the pillars, are undulating lines caused by jets of matter, fired out into space by the active new stars, those pulses of energy form the cosmic equivalent of bow shocks, similar to the waves produced by a boat as it plows through a body of water. Energetic hydrogen molecules excited by the waves cause these regions to glow red as well. NASA describes the new picture as lush and majestic. And it surely earns those adjectives, but it is something more too. It's a reminder that news may come and news may go, and events may unfold on earth in the eye blink speed of human lifespans. But deep in space, which those same perishable humans have taught themselves to observe with instruments crafted by ingenious minds and deft hands, is something closer to a lovely, eternity. A skyscape of images that our science is only now making it possible to witness and cherish..

"In sport, particularly the Harvey based surf life saving club and Queensland so lifesaving is that fair to say. What do we involve in the beach? I think the beach is a good spot. We have a beach so with 6th rank number 6 in Queensland at the moment so it's pretty good. It's fair to say that you have been heavily involved in sport for a long time. Sport looks seeing people compete in come and visit the region to have a passion more and I think it's a key economic driver and also it helps create a healthy community. And you are a an AFL tragic as I've had as I did a little bit tragic, but it's been 8 years that I think or something since more and more since my mom's 1 a.m. a premiership for America. And I still went ahead and butcher shop every Saturday I used to play a grand final. The same game every week and more I take almost one, so anyone who come to come on the quality weight so that come and say, hey, we're looking at it, we're not going to go to the moment but I think we're going to come back. I think applied for about 5 years on a Saturday night. This podcast reflecting ten people, just like their number one, sporting moment of 2021. And I was spoken to a number of people. And you've got and you've chosen a number one, 2021 sporting moment. That's correct, but it's got an asterisk, because it had a start three years ago in Harvey by surprise. So we'll go backwards to go forwards. In 2018, actually was 2013 that started. I came up with an idea when we were both on canceling that trying to get these iconic events and rotational events to Harvey by and one of them was the I class catamaran will championship. So that involved a fair bit of process and did a planning and cloning people to get involved. So we decided to put two weeks of sounding on. So we went in and presented to the Australian class association. Dan Lake therapy. They had the nationals like Thermo. And asked them to consider the next round championships, which coincided with the world championships. Coming to Australia that be held in Harvey bay. So they supported the move for and then we started to put a bit of a community together and it ended up being called Sal Harvey by the I class I kept worlds in 2018 so I was basically two and a bit weak event that had some of the greatest silence who ever saw a catamaran into that in Australia and the world come and silent hobby by. So we had a 117 boats in showed up and we had teams from America from Europe, New Zealand. And all over the place and some really, really good people who loved coming to visit our region. So part of that was a big continue to K waves and they're great really good people and I've made life of friends and they just were amazing people. The K waves were turned up and mass is a bit of a story about a field that contained his company and have insane struggles to kid. I mean, and the container was one of them. Three of the kiwis player took Pete burling in Glen ashby, who's an Australian and they were all involved in the Emirates team New Zealand. So that was the brine stressed. So those guys came and this was a part of their lead up to that. So to say you have a high functioning team works just fascinated me that these guys were just so dedicated. And all the sailors to make clan ashby, he's like the Maradona, I guess it's just a really, really nice block. And they're all these fellows are all good blacks had many Olympians with us and world champions, but all really, really good guys. And to say that preparing for this will for the little America's cup sorry. Only spoiling bites at a 70 foot long and I guess guy flying along and just absolutely amazing to see, but the catamarans of iodine foot long and I foil. And laying technology. So these things are like the formula ones obviously. And these guys were reshaping foils and playing with their sails and just so focused on the pro. So Glenn, I should be one. He didn't have to sell the last day to win but he still sailed. And just saying that these guys interact with the other side was going to come over Joshua McCormack, he was a photographer drove the chase boat, and it was a team effort on these cars. To watch how they went about it and the meticulous planning just made me really interested in what happens with the America's cup. So I used to sell and just fascinated while the technology in it. So to see these guys plan it out and how unfolded in their grandfather was just amazing and having the seeds of that in Harvey bait. You know, that were there with their team, and off I went, but it's really interesting the America's cup, especially Emirates, so they have a theory a couple of years ago a couple of challenges ago that ran out of money. It won't stop had to bring their own lunch. To the head office. And they rotate their team, yeah. So there's a really good book called legacy. About the all blacks and they talk about the Emirates team New Zealand in that and John Bertrand talks about it in some of his stuff. And it's really interesting about the culture that they have. And seeing the culture of these guys, when they came out, they were going to win that America's got three years before. 21 years after their first successful defense on home orders, Emirates team New Zealand do it again in a new class of both at first. The Americans have still 70 foot long 70 or two foot long. And they fly. They jump out of the water and fly on top of the water. It's called foiling. And when we had those guys here, sailing Glen ashby is just the best boatman going around. He can fly into the beach and Blair and pay flying into the beach at Harvey by foiling and then just dropping in onto the asset awards. There was some amazing footage and great pictures of these guys with all of the guys just on the foiling and these bites are pop up and shade across the border. The technology involved to do that. And as I said, they bring these on teams in the young design tinker and tinker. These birds have basically the roll cages that are formerly ones in them, they're down that fast, they're safety conscious. It's really interesting, but the technology in those bites was amazing. And it was all under the foils and the sails to get them out. It was a lot rocket launch, but it was amazing.

"Responding to your recent thing about the vaccine. Yeah i've been hesitant since day one to get this vaccine and because it was fair mental thing and now when you look at the reports from the vaccine people who are getting endangered by it but nobody's reporting the side effects from the back thing. Hey mike regarding the kobe vaccine. I had covered so did my wife. We are contemplating getting it. But based on some of the data. I i'm a little hesitant quite frankly. A lot of folks have passed away from complications due to it. And of course the other data that they keep telling us is that ninety eight or ninety nine percent of people who are dying of coveted our unvaccinated. So that i would think would get your attention to. But there's a lot of data to digest. And i believe is an american. You get to digest the data and come to the conclusion. You wanna come to you. Shouldn't be ostracized. If the conclusion you reach doesn't comport with the cdc but again i'm back to the political aspect of this because byron york mollie. Hemingway says the data says sixty one percent of people who aren't getting the vaccine are not republicans byron york rights just the opposite in the washington. Examiner more republicans than democrats appear to be vaccine hesitant quote unquote. That is reluctant for one reason. Or another to take the cove in nineteen vaccine right wing. Anti vaccine hysteria is increasing. Will all pay. The price read one headline in the washington. Post the new york times. The headline far-right extremists move from stop the steel to stop the vaccine. The daily beast chimed in with the gop's paranoid street from john bertrand's to anti vaxxers. You get the idea. Byron says but not hard to imagine a different picture. in president trump had won reelection. The vaccine skepticism might have leaned more to the other side. We can't say that for sure of course but we do know as you heard in that model and that montage the candidate joe biden and running mate kamala harris were laying the groundwork for vaccine skepticism before they won the election and some media followed their lead. So is it political. Is it political if you. Let's just start with david here. I david let me ask you if you don't mind did you. Vote for donald trump. Did sir great. Were you hesitant over the vaccine in twenty twenty sarah interest and he had nothing to do with political opinion. Sir i was strictly on hats off to the president on the project work speed and all that was on the manufacturing side you know but It's just more of a you know this was billed as the state of the art solution and my experience is a test engineer and things things that are state of the art tend to have need some time to figure them out. I'm not willing to. I'm not willing to expose myself as long as it's under an emergency us. It's off the table. If the fda fully approves it. I'll revisit our and i'll i'll reconsider understood all right david thanks. Let's get some other voices here before we're joined by former secretary of state. Mike pompeo at the turning point. Usa conference in tampa. Hi tim welcome. How are you hi. I'm not has the family. Extremely adamant. I will not take. And and what are your reasons. The already i ain't nobody there you go. We got enough. We got enough lucifer to go around danny europe. Hey danny are you going to get. You're not getting the shot or you're not getting the shot. Hi my my call planning on taking the shot And it's not because of political reasons. It's more because I've been exposed to cope it. And i have the antibodies. I've been tested for positives And yes i've got the. Antibodies already doesn't seem necessary to take a shot. That's going to give you more. Antibodies interesting and again. That's and you have you talked about that with your doctor. I have and the need the job i'm working. Currently i worked for the government and until they make me until until the federal government makes me take it then. I don't plan on taking a period. Appreciate it very much. Lots of lots of different opinions on vaccine reluctance. Hesitancy for some. It's heck no wonder if mike pompeo got the job. I'm not gonna ask him. I'm not gonna go around. Asking people have been vaccinated. But you can tell me former secretary of state and some say watchable presidential contender.

"It is without a doubt astoundingly delightful. They get back in touch with John Decker. He, of course, White House correspondent Senior Editor four Great television Network and John Aloha, and it's good to reconnect. Good to reconnect with you. Aloha to you as well. Rick. I hope you're doing great this morning. Doing very well. Same to you, my friend and my goodness a lot on the agenda. But once again reintroduction yourself, please and also great television. Sure I'd service the White House correspondent for Great Television. Great Television owns 113 stations across the entire United States, including Hawaii News now and so you probably watch are your audience probably watches our station on a regular basis. We're really proud of that station in Honolulu, and I also services senior national editor. For great TV. And as you know, I've covered the White House since 1995 and never gets old for me. I never get jaded. It's always Such a privilege to cover the White House, regardless of who's in the White House. Very well done and very well said because covering the White House these days, there's a lot of percolates yesterday. Jen Psaki with a press briefing. I know that you were an attendant. There are some things that really stood out. And of course we're all wrestling with Covid, our state. Our governor. Extending restrictions passed. And anticipated date with a mandatory 70%. Vaccination rate. It was posed a question to Jen Psaki of the administration regarding mandates vaccine mandates, and she replied. That's up to local government and private industry, but the White House would support their decision. Can we expand on this part of the story, John Well, that's right. I mean, I think that what she was getting at is there's not going to be a federal mandate coming from the Biden administration as far as band AIDS, whether you're talking about mask mandates or whether you're talking about Vaccine passports that needs to come if it does come from state and local leaders and from private industry. So, for instance, if, for instance, the Washington Nationals, this is not the case. But I'm just throwing out a hypothetical if the Washington Nationals baseball team Insisted that everybody who watch watches the nationals in person must show proof of the vaccination. They could certainly do so, but that's not something that will be mandated coming from the Biden White House. What is as and by the way, John as an attorney as well. What is the specificity on issuance of mandates by the federal government? Especially in an occasion regarding personal health. Well, you know, you see the health advisers to President Biden on television almost every day on one cable or broadcast network or another. They are making the case that It makes sense to get vaccinated not only for your health but also for the U. S economy and getting back to the way things were before the pandemic. You'll continue to see that you'll continue to hear that from those healthcare advisors, but I don't think You're going to see anything beyond what they're doing right now, beyond the urging of individuals who haven't been vaccinated to do so. Uh, for their own health, after all the people that are being hospitalized, uh, in state after state for Covid, 19 or individuals who have not been vaccinated. And so that's the reason why they're urging those Who haven't been vaccinated to go out and get one of the three vaccines that have been approved by the FDA. So bottom line. Is it legal for in mandate to be issued is a constitutional Is it precedented? Is it legal? Well, it hasn't been challenged. I don't think it will be tested for that matter. Ok, Rick, I I I think that you know, the administration recognizes it may or may not be within the realm of the power of the president. But that's not something that President Biden wants to pursue. Clearly, he would like to see individuals. Listen to the healthcare advisors out there. Dr. Fauci, the FDA commissioner, Wolinski, uh rather than Have some sort of a mandate. You must do this or or else that that's not going to come from the administration talking with John Decker and John, of course with US Great television networks, and we thank him so very much, uh, moving along, though International news, of course incidents in both Haiti and Cuba. Starting with Haiti with the recent assassination of the Haitian president. The administration what is the meaning of this event to the United States? And what has been the response. To this unfortunate event. Well, it is an unfortunate event. I can remember when I lived and worked in Miami in the early to mid 19 nineties covering, uh, issues concerning Haiti quite a bit when John Bertrand Aristide was the president and then was deposed and then was Helped back into power through the U. S. It's always a difficult question for U S president to answer whether or not Haiti The country. And what happens in Haiti is in the U. S national interest. It's It's just one of those things that it's difficult for a president to answer because you know there are certainly Issues that are in the U. S national interest in countries and regions of the world that are in the U. S national interests. And it's difficult sometimes for for some presidents to make the case that Haiti is in our best national interest that being said you do see involvement by this administration. Uh, some White House aides went down to Haiti and after getting a read of the situation on the ground, they they came back to Washington to brief the president. But it's just one of those situations where once again we see Haiti that is wracked by uncertainty in terms of the future of the leadership of its country after this assassination, which took place last week. I shared with the audience of my experience in Haiti around the same period you were serving in Miami..

"Each other and we still can run the country in anti close. He's pretty impressive out. Think that she's eighty two full and very strong she. She comes right back. Well known a few eight year olds in my life and he knew there there. There seemed to be cognitive slip. Happy she's on. C- i mean she is on an and and yeah so. I'm thoroughly impressed with her. I think that she had said earlier on that. The agreement that she had made a with others the more progressive. The party is that she would serve two terms as speaker. This is the second term she was just elected to. And i'm hoping and i fully imagine that we're going to see some new individuals coming forward in leadership roles in we certainly see many of them come forward katie porter keep an eye on her she is a rockstar in our already. I think that she is doing it in outstanding job. She's a state rep She's a united states representative. And i just. I adore her. And i think that she's doing a lot of upgrade s. We wind down stephen What do you think what should we expect from by non once we get past all the impeachment hauer. That's gonna shake out you know he's really got For years now to to show us what can be gone. Where do you think are some of the top things. He's going to tackle i. Yeah so first and foremost it's coded cova coleman every piece every part of the government is going to be laser focused on kovin of any us through this crisis of helping americans get through and that's going to be everything from the health and medical side of things but it's also going to be on the support for our young families are young are small businesses a chimney bird. Small businesses have been held out to dry and and being able to see some real focus on delivering and and delivering in a way that not just his cutting blank checks to these offices but really helping the small businesses heat their staff. I think every one of us with our connections to the local business community can hold some really shining examples of folks. That said we're giving away. Were no longer taking salaries. But we're going to keep our staff employed where really going to lean in and and help our our young asked able to take care of their families. That's the thing that i think we're going to see. I think you're also waiting to see him wienand just because of his background. I think you're gonna see him. Really works to improve our standing on the national on the international i think he's gonna lean into a work with his counterparts throughout the world to be able to improve our standing. And i think that those are gonna be you know some of the things that we're going to see from him in his first hundred days that are probably gonna be the most To what i'm looking for the other thing is i'm going to forward to my whole world my whole day coming to a screeching halt because we're going to damage mode because of some wild tweet. That goes out. Like i'm really looking forward to being able to have that. We can plan that we can actually return to some norms. That is something important for me. Excuse me the last thing i want to say is having to justice department but no longer is beholding to political that this is gonna be a justice department. That is going to be free from political intervention. That it's gonna be it's gonna follow the facts that if you break a law. You're going to be held accountable. That is what we want to see. And i think that by doing those things President by will actually be able to get people to come to his side. That folks will give him the chance because they'll see it and biden is a big person to be able to say. Don't believe what i'm saying. Watch what i'm doing. And i think that's what we're going to see from him. I hope i hope you're right and i. I wish the best for him. I respect the office of the presidency. And i respect mr biden. You know winning the race. Taylor have anything you'd like to ask before we close young spot. Well we kinda talked about it. Last night's I would certainly like to live here and raise my kids here but a huge part of it for me like what is to see my kids public school. But we don't have the best public school system like the democrats bernie sir Plans or visions for education. Because i mean to me. That's just a huge factor deciding whether or not even stakes. I love ways. But it's usually out. It's a big deal for me. So yeah so look and obviously. I think that there's a lot of different ideas out there. But i'm a firm believer in in what clinton said when he was over in lake. Charles he said go to our schools. Find out what is working for them and then pay to replicated elsewhere. I think that's a really important thing for us to look at the problem that we've seen in one of the. I think the things that we are paying the price of the reagan era it is all taxes are bad. Look at the initiatives that we're doing here if we're take more constantly taking money away from those funds and the problem is that they're trying to balance that on the backs of the teachers while the problem i have with that. Is these teachers. That are now in their fifties. Okay agreed to defer compensation because of their retirement package because of their benefits package. They agreed to this work so that they would have that for themselves and ripping that a winning from them when they're ultimately two years to their retirement is not acceptable. So we we can do. Both we can honestly do both these things. We can have green schools that were reinvesting but we got lafayette high. And you will mmediately beat the most embarrassed person for any of the kids that have to call that their school it is falling down around the ankles of the kids that are going into every day in. We should all be appalled at that so we have to do better. But we have to have these honest dialogues. We have to go out there and have conversations with community and we got to get people to place where we can realize. We gotta be investing in our kids. How do you connect people in kobe. All their tax money doesn't go to what it says. It's four because that's a lot of people that i know were conservative data down for all taxes. Because they're like well they stakes for this. This but never is seven. It's just kind of like an all or nothing situation me. How do you convince them back. Their money's going where it's supposed to be going. Because i have to make sure that our leaders don't miss appropriate and send money elsewhere. So that's the first thing we gotta do. There's gotta be accountability on these individuals that are in office that are reshuffling these these monies being able to run everything through the general fund is not acceptable. We've got us for dedicating and we gotta start attaching one of the things that we saw over in. Calcutta she was there. Sheriff actually attached hitters increased millage to a covenant with the voters and said that ninety percent of this money is going to be used exactly for what we're italian you and if not i'm gonna come back in the air permission more of that. We're going to lean into being accountable and actually doing what we're saying we're gonna do to. There's too much fuzzy math. That goes on and all of this stuff and we're doing to ourselves. We did this year. We know when the airport tax is passed. It was for eight months and they kept their promise. All the money went to the airport. People voted for. It was masterful yet. Campaign lives impressive. Yeah that was. Larry side's group help in the airport commission but they did what they were getting a new air. That's exactly right. And i would also go back and argue The fiber optics the home. We did what we said we were going to do you back for those of us were involved heavily in back campaign iranian the democratic side of things. My friend john bertrand actually ran the republican side of things. That was so weird being in the same room with election day. Running our ops on it was so weird a by was it was something that that tier huma lettuce and ed and look every possible thing was thrown against him right every possible thing can even this day is still being a challenge but we delivered no one was gonna much higher bailed broads broadband. No was going to do that for us. And the amount of opportunities that is now provided to small businesses to educational opportunities for kids was huge. And so i will always put that feather in my cap and used as kind of a shining model of a community coming together and and really doing something for itself. Detailer of this has been great. Stephen hand work It's so good to hear your voice and to shine the light year. One of the people. I think that makes slap yet special and while we don't always probably agree on some of the political issues Again as i said in the opening our hearts are similar. Sa- thank you for taking time to share your thoughts and we'll see how the next few months unfold that i think locally. There's a lot to look forward here as we all start getting the vaccines and people emerge from this down. I'm looking forward to getting back to gnarled. Save me to. It was such a pleasure being here. Thank you so much for the invitation. Anytime you want to get together I'm there for you. Thank you also like to thank.
