"They make it way. Yeah and then. We switched our cell phone providers to something much much cheaper and rice and beans rice and beans. We we cut cable. We you know we went to we did that. We also did. Then you got to play with your kids into We did lots of things like that. We also You know we went from buying like You know quote like healthier food like you know. Some of the organic stuff to where he went to To buying all generics all the and places like that really you know. We saw just switching grocery stores. We knocked her grocery bill down by like six hundred bucks a month which is crazy. So things We just made a lot of a lot of little changes and a lot of telling children. No but hey we kinda wanted. Just think well. It's not in the budget and we can't do this month or let's look at it next month and i think the biggest thing for us to do it all was really improve communication skills for even though you know we were sharing bank accounts. Everything else Our money was running two different directions. We had goals for ourselves and not necessarily Yeah we weren't talking together about as much and you know at this point we've been married six years. We began this journey so we should have already been on the same page but it was in different directions. This really helped us pull together. And we didn't every dollar together every month and sat down and think the i probably eight or nine months. She hated that time of the month. And then we kinda got better as we used to it and make adjustments and You know learning how to work on a budget and things and we dealt with setbacks. I mean we had a. We had about twenty dollars in medical bills. We had a cash flow through the beginning of this so she had had some major surgeries. We had to do some that and we also had a by new. Hvac system we had to do. Oh fact always likes to show up. We're trying to make headway financially. What would you say to couples out there. That aren't on the same page there here. This and they're shaking their heads and go. We're not on the same page financially. You guys got on saint page. Would you say to encourage them. I mean i think just finding you're finding your y getting your goal and then really just finding a way to communicate. Adjust how. I spoke to her money. Because if. I wasn't careful. The way i spoke about money came off to her like i was either be condescending or was or i was not value told her because we had different different things important. And i think. I mean from your end. Basically i been very privileged my whole life so being told no was not really exciting but you know not really learning to live like within your means and below your means to make sacrifices really was rewarding You know it's a good feeling to be to look back and see what if accomplished. Yeah that's awesome. So who are your cheerleaders. Who are the people that really cheer you on and stayed with you through the journey. We definitely family You know her parents especially in mind too as well but her your parents who are the ones who had it through after you back in high school. They were followers of the program. We're kind of encouraging us on and You know in our and my my dad step mom is well. We had some good folks in From family and friends that our corner from friends from our church where really encouraging as well. That's awesome in the kiddos. I see that they're here with you. We're going to bring them up just a moment. But did they get it like or they or they kinda in tuned. And how did they contribute. Well they after saying no to so many things for so long figured we had to kind of tell them why at some point. We explained the concept of debt. And they're like. Why would you do that. That seems silly like well. Yes out of the mouth of babes come wisdom right so but They they started to understand what you're doing and they were excited for us and we're talking about it. And then sometimes they would tell each other or and our oldest sues with his grandmother today but you know he reminded no. We're not doing that because you know we're because mommy daddy in debt working on stuff and so police each other a little bit so good well see. They've joined just tell us who they are and their their names and ages please. This is fm. He has seven. This is lydia. He has six. we got it. F- and lydia. That is so awesome and now have they been practicing their scream. Are they ready to go. Yes sir. I think it's time you john right. Let's we're going to get your copy legacy journey. Because that's the next step where y'all headed and we're gonna give you a copy of money makeover so you can give it away to somebody who you think would benefit from. It changed her life as well. Yeah so please pass that along all right here. We go john. And catherine f-from and lydia. They paid off eighty seven thousand dollars. Eighty seven five hundred eleven dollars actually in twenty eight months making one hundred five thousand two hundred and forty thousand dollars. Let's hear your debt. Free screen guys. Three to one. That i love it. So good. Way to go kiddos. They nailed it as a happy family. John didn't quite a sacrifice. Yes but it's two years and then every single thing is different. You're right. I don't know that all crappy leaders men are making you consider changing your entire career. Lane is at necessary the emotional junk at work. John and i love the team up on that because that's his area in the area of mental emotional health. I'm over here in the area of purpose and doing what you were created to do. Of course we'll take your money questions relationship questions Here's one been getting a lot of traffic james producers telling me people asking questions. Hey ken my company is going to mandate the vaccine for various reasons. I don't want to do it. That means i might lose my job. I'm expecting lose my job. What do i do. We're going to help you navigate the future the steps ahead so we're open it up. It's about you we're here for you. Triple eight eight to five five two two five. Let's start it off with tyler. Who joins us now in salt lake. City utah tyler. How can we help. Hey john and ken thanks so much for question. What's up So i'm twenty two years old and i'm working fulltime right now and then doom school online. And i'm at the point in school where i should really be Deciding and locking in on a career or a focus on what. I'm studying going into But at this point time. I'm really not sure I can't really navigate which path. I like to go. Go down to what career i like to go into. My question is how. Should i go about deciding that. And then how much should i really A lot of money to influence that decision up. How much i'll be making it that career yet so moneymatters. Let me. Just start with that. But i would never let the amount of money that i could make be the ultimate decision maker. Is it a part of the decision. Yes but not the ultimate decision maker. And i'll start with this title. I can't tell you how many phone calls i've taken on the ken coleman show here on the ramsey show where somebody is taken a promotion because it was a lot of money and it was a big bump and then they got over there and they realize man i'm miserable and that happens all the time the data that's out there on wall street millionaires. That are really good at their job and making a killing and they're miserable and as a result they're moving into depression They're moving into addiction. All kinds of. I'm gonna tell you something you gotta love the work or at some point If you don't love your day job you better have a side job or hobby. That's very very meaningful to you. You gotta have some purpose in what you're contributing so I would consider what your options are from a pay standpoint but never let it be the deciding factor. So let's get practical. You're in school. You're in a major. I'm guessing you have a couple of ideas as it relates to paths. That you're considering gimme that gimme the the ones that are the the most exciting to you right now. You spend the most time thinking about Well something In the business realm Whether that's company or or My girlfriend's father accountant. Something around that area doesn't sound super exciting. But something that i potentially might be going into but like said i'm still kind of trying to decipher. I get it but tyler. I got ask you. Why did you go into school. What was something that you thought. You know what this could be exciting work. Is there ever been a point where you said you know. What does i looked at my future. And i wonder a little bit. What did you wonder about. What have you done well. It was originally going into school for psychology be. I wanna be counselor a therapist. Why because i do love the of to help people and i'm pretty good at listening and And try and give them good advice or help them understand their situation better. Have you moved on from that I think uh. I only did because the school down the road kind of the extra school kind of threw me off your but hold on a second. Let's pause it. What was the driving reason behind your interest in psychology and helping people specifically the problems that people have that draw you in that led you that direction anything from your personal journey or observation experience. Yeah i would say probably experience. Are you comfortable sharing that Yeah so i. I actually My mom had a counselor growing up just with family matters with siblings and family and out of different treatment centers and everything And i think just having the charlie growing up having someone to talk to and Not only to listen to you but you know help you navigate Through you know whatever craziness you're going through. Yeah you had somebody in that role. That still means a lot to you. Yeah definitely.

"Is the ramsey call of the day part of the ramsey network joining me. Today is ramsey. Dr john baloney folk is with us in midland. Texas i hope how are you. Hi how are you guys doing today. Better than we deserve. what's up. Well first off. I just want to say what a pleasure it was to see both of you at summit this year in dallas. That was very enjoyable. Thank thank you thank you for coming. It was a great event. We had a lot of fun. It was great My question today actually Just a background My husband and i together started our own business. Thirteen years ago and It's just over the last four or five years. it's gone downhill. He and i have a lot of issues with communicating Almost to the extent of not communicating at all but it is affecting our business A great deal. Because he and i are not on the same page as far as strategy how to how to go about the operation of the business and get going so i guess my question is What kind of advice. You might would have Relationship as well as just keeping our business afloat and moving it forward when we're not on the same page at all. How's your marriage Suffering because of it is it a chicken or the egg is they self-reinforcing one another. I guess is tough at home. They become tough in the office and they become tougher at home and faster and faster. Have you guys stepped away from everything. Gone over to dallas for a weekend is to say. Hey what in. The world's going on or is this thing just started spinning so fast and all of a sudden you look up and it's a year later. You're not talking anymore Just kind of spun and then in yeah like you said two or three years later now. Things are just so totally out of control and we were talking to. There's a problem to. oh yes. Okay yes yeah. This is one of those moments that can it can be a really important. It's going to be an important moment either way but it can be Something not to be feared it can be a beautiful moment when was redefining rebuilding excavation start over rebuilding moments. But it's got to have to happen. Somebody's gotta turn the lights off. I mean turn the lights on. Turn the music off. Take inventory of the party you've been having and saying. Hey where are we. What's going on and I love it when couples can look each other in the eye and say hey we need to do this and had this moment this we need to take a post mortem on what's happened and decide where we're gonna go but somebody's gotta just say stop for a second you guys need you guys needed a good marriage counselor in your corner to start with and just the business will not heal until your marriage us right we. We have done marriage counseling literally a little about a year and a half ago And didn't do it. Well apparently not. Why did they go. Why didn't it go well He kinda just checks outs We've even done business. Coaching and You know i'm saying two different counselors business coach Literally fired us a year and a half ago or two years ago because he wouldn't participate We were in coaching for fifteen months and he just wouldn't do his part of a t. Woods wouldn't schedule for our our weekly sessions things like that. He just wouldn't he checks out and not doesn't even give a reason just checks out and doesn't do it And it was kind of the same way in our marriage counseling. I mean he attended 'cause we went together but he would just kind of clam up and and nothing really was being said from his his point and he did tell me he didn't like the the counselor the marriage counselor that he didn't like he didn't trust him or something and It just didn't go anywhere and literally since that time. We've just kinda quit talking literally so your your your relationship If you stop and step out of it for a minute it's unlike support. Yes And i would say you're you're in an emergency status and it sounds like you've got a guy that's that is unable to say. Hey i'm done with this thing is unable doesn't end. I don't blame. You don't have the tools or as a coward or whatever you want to say. But he's unable to say. I'm through with this thing and he's going to slowly suffocate. It and somebody's got to turn all the lights on in that house and send the kids away for a weekend and say we've got a gotta take an inventory because what he's communicating to you is. He is finished and he doesn't have the courage to say he's done or he scared of you or he doesn't want to be in this business anymore. He doesn't know how to say it out loud. Somehow he is slowly pulled this thing underwater counseling. We call it the one down position. But he's drowned in the house slowly but surely and Usually the your your role in this is to try to keep yanking as hard as you can the other direction and it just creates this tension that ends up sinking the boat anyway. So you've got to just stop. Stop the music and say are you done with this marriage. I'm not going to continue to participate in crazy the way it exists. No i'm going to say we're going to do something different now. Do you want to work on this. And he'll it. If you do that involve hugh finding a counselor that you trust that. We can sit down with that. You're willing to open up in front of and to get stuff fixed otherwise it's just gonna continue to deteriorate. This is not working. You know continuing to do the same thing over and over again expecting a different result Saying you know if you're seeking outside it direction and you're not taking direction from outside. That's him there. There has to be a reason. Yeah i and You know. I can buy i. I've sat down with people that i didn't trust and i'm not gonna open up in front of them absolutely not doing that. I can buy that as a reason but the the answer is not nothing. Then the answer is go. Find a different counselor right. So he's communicating to you. If you won't find another counselor that is a. That's a communication to you that i'm done with this or he's just doesn't have the tools to to work this through whatever it is but yeah you gotta have somebody in your corner at least guiding you through these tough discussions that you have got to have immediately. The business is not got a chance. Now until the marriage ups. Thanks for tuning into the ramsey call of the day. Check out all of our podcast. Just search ramsey network on apple podcasts. "That we know our story that i know my strengths and my struggles then operate differently in this world in every relationship including that relationship with my kids and so. I don't think we can dive deep enough into that place as parents which is so in keeping with the very thing we're talking about today of. I can't do that well without some support. Like i can't see everything that's true about me. I'm limited by my perspective. I need other is on my life. In a way that there's opportunity for growth and development that benefits my work have benefits. My marriage benefits my parenting. And i think it's the wisdom to you know if you are driving down the road and the check engine. Light comes on my car. Like i'm not gonna assume. I know how to diagnose the circumstance and i need a mechanic and that is a good thing for folks who trained in how to deal with my car like. It's fascinating to me that we would assume that posture with our vehicle or with different parts of our lives but one with our own wellbeing health and i think it's just a good thing to put other is on a circumstance that someone could see something i can't see and create opportunity for growth. I love that analogy because everyone listening like well. Yeah my check engine. Light came on for sure. Take it to the to the shop. But there i feel like to. And i've talked to dr john baloney one of our ramsey personalities. About this i like. They're they're still even in our even my generation of of parents individuals There's this stigma around counseling. There's the stigma around seeking out. Help i know the older generations like they're definitely is with my mom's generation. The baby boomers like if you go to counseling like you must. Something's wrong with you you. you're crazy person. Whenever which is not at all true like you said a well checkup as a great example. Talk a little bit about. Maybe some people that feel resistant to getting help and counseling is not the only way to help but as an example resistant to seeking the expert..

"Sometimes people have heard this phrase several times especi- people who work in trauma. They say if i start crying i'll never be able to stop and one way to combat that unhealthy it's pathological but an unhealthy way to come. That is toxic positively. I'm just going to ignore anything. Negative and we'll just continue to. We'll repeat those phrases that we see on bathroom walls in on pillows right there crocheted on those little signs and bathroom walls not on the author. Most but we don't have time for this but Next time we're together on the ramsey show. I think we might breakdown toxic. How do we know if it's toxic or something. Because i'm afraid this word getting worn out of control between that's not great versus toxic talks. I go allah touch that batman like batman movie where you fell in the toxics live and die versus. That's a great net people have crapper. I'm uncomfortable. I don't know you got to be careful that word. I'm with you pause the next time you wanna say toxic clause and go gonna melt to die could start there. This is what you've come to the raves. Show for right there that kind of death dope for coming right back Welcome back america. You're joining the conversation here on the ramsey show. I'm ken coleman joined by my colleague. "I mean there's no question. I mean i could survive can weather but in terms of being able to project into the future in this crazy but environment that we're in it's never gonna be quite the same. I got this scar now is that is that wrong. The word we use his trauma no doubt it is and so now your brain is. It's gonna scan the environment until you say. Hey i'm okay we're okay. Somebody says kovic bike. I just go into like you. And i talked about was not scared about coping. I'm scared about while we're going to round cove right. You talked about once I don't know if we're on the show or not but talk about you're in a car wreck want somebody rear ended the crap out of you and now that when you go to that middle lane to take a turn he just fill yourself grad. That we're a little bit tired and that was years ago and so there's gotta be a sense of intention analogy Around we're here now. Yes sometimes it just says it helps you say allow just go. You know that. That's what that is. Why keep looking on my shoulder. We're here we're here now and so is it gonna yup probably not bad as all that almost all that lizard brings me but it might be right. Maybe we'll deal within. Jonathan tragedies johnson. What's up in your world. Hey it's a great honor to speak to you. Guys have been huge influence in my life. Entreleadership is shaped how we run our business and So i appreciate all you guys do cool that we have we have family owned businesses here and my brothers and partner so things are going good. We're been successful growing fast My stroller questions. Today is kinda as i. Bring my brother's slash business partners into this. You know to get them to buy more entity you know. The business side of things are working in the business. Not just on the business you know so we do really getting projects done and doing that and waiting people but sometimes the business side of it i. I feel like all alone at times. So what do you mean by. What is what is it you want them to do. They're not doing. I'm confused. i guess probably just You know looking for you. Know their advice counsel opinions on certain things you know. Sometimes they leave a lot of it up to me and so sometimes i look for answers. So they're doing day job running doing the thing that there is there portion to do producing the widget but then they're not thinking about the overall thing. Yeah unless i put it in front of them and then sometimes even that i don't get much feedback so all right so dave. What do you think about that. I think i think a rolls clarity issue. Okay there's two roles that you and your brothers play the same here at ramsey for me or rachel okay. Rachel is an owner of this business. Rachel cruze. she's my daughter. She's also ramsey personality win. She is a ramsey personality. She getting paid on the exact same schedule that john baloney gets paid. A percentage of speaking a percentage of a book sale. Or whatever so. She's getting paid ramsey personality if she does that job and that's all she does that's all she's gonna get paid for doing that job. As an owner she gets paid a percentage of the prophets. And that's because she's an owner not because she did something those two things are separate and so you need to say you know in order to get in your case in order to get owner pay not just pay for doing your widget job you have to do owner work what you're talking about is they're doing their you know it l- let's just make up something. Okay your car mechanic. I don't know what you want. I don't wanna put normal. Put it out but you know so. So they work on the cars all day and they get paid for working on the cars but when it comes to figuring out how much rent we should jar a pay what kind of building we should rent or what kind of advertising campaign. We should do or who we should do our taxes. They all they want to is work on cars and so the the deal is if you wanna get paid owner share you also have to be involved in the owner the work of being the owner and they don't get that part they think if do their day job that they're doing what they're supposed to be doing and it's okay to do either one but you don't get owner pay unless you're doing on her work only get mechanic pay for being a mechanic personality pay for being a personality. Did y'all start this thing together or did you start. And then they're coming in to help. No we're second generation so we kinda like over from my dad and and so that was about six years ago so it was pretty small at that time. so we've we've grown a lot. How many team members total. We have thirty okay. All right it's going to be a hard conversation. How old how old are your brothers Forty and thirty seven. Okay i think you guys just sit down Maybe even with the wives and just and you start talking about. 'cause here's what i hear and i think it needs to be corrected one way or the other. I hear that you're the only person running this business. Yeah feels like that at time. That's what you feel. That's what you've conveyed okay. So you're the only one functioning as an owner of the other guys are functioning in their job inside the business and that's okay. You're my brother. I love you if you want to have a job here. I will pay you for doing a job but owners participate in owner work. That's a different task. A different job description than you know. Okay let's say you're a mechanic and you don't ever pay the rent you don't ever get the taxes done and you own the business. Then you've not done owners work and you're going to go out of business right so i think you just sit down with all of them and go gas. It's okay with me either way. But something's gonna give. Because i'm not going to be the only grownup but i think before that. He's got to articulate with those owner responsibility. Yeah gotta write them down. What does this involve what is involved to own and operate a business. The owner makes different level decisions. The people who worked in the business. And if you just want to work in the business you can be my brother and be a mechanic and i'll put you on mechanic pay. That's fine and i love it. That's another all of that but let's clarify Today proverbs four twenty-three above all else guard your heart for everything you do flows from it either. Marshall says may we think of freedom not as the right to do as we please but as the opportunity to do what is right here. Marshals worth reading can say. That's a great quote. Yeah i think they had to do to survive and it's kind of barbell after twenty twenty right everybody either is looking at record profits but suddenly they got more employees their businesses. Not what they knew it to be or and they owned a dance studio or a karate studio and overnight it just went away and everybody's launched out of that. They looked up eight months later. Man they don't know their kids their spouse. They thought they could just treat yourself. It'd be okay man. People are really struggling. I'll speak for myself and say we had record profits more than we had anticipated And certainly more than we anticipated in the middle of the pandemic because it scared the bejesus out of everybody me included in terms of what it would do to the business. What would it do. The thousand people that i'm responsible for paying their payroll. I'm responsible for their kids eating as a result in the stress of that. But now we're the side of it and we've got these unbelievable profits but here's what. I probably only do my counseling on the monsters out there. But i think it's representative. I really do Looking my shoulder Like is there another thing coming. What are the stupid but stuff is the government gonna pull. What other stupid but stuff is somebody going to blow the mathematics up and make everybody completely irrational. When i mean because if they can do that crap once i mean it it it it's i don't i don't feel as stable even though i'm in great shape financially..

Yeah obnoxiously yeah. that's great. i like that. That's a good question. I love that question. I'll be interested to see like rachel. I wish he was sitting here would ask her. Because i don't know i mean i know. They're teaching the kids out of the financial piece how to do the stuff. But i don't know how much they're looking over like little a million looking over winston a ritual shoulders when they're actually doing they're giving because i guarantee you. You always act like there's four people listening when we know there's millions number say how popular the show is but that's a great. That's a great segue a great question. Because here's the thing. Is there a certain technology that is right or wrong when it comes to handling your money. No there is not what you've got to careful within your own life and what you're modeling before your kids is what is it doing to your psyche. You know because anytime that the technology makes it easier for you to spend money and your brain does not register the pain. Your pain centers are not activated that you just did spending..

"You need see six months for an emergency fund and then we're going to say good man we don't have a meteorite plan right and so we have six month emergency fund and we're going to move onto the next thing because if you keep spinning your wheels there then what are you gonna do. Eventually your body says why you can get out of bed. Just go to bed. And so what i would love to challenge you and your husband to do is to get away from all the the mess and by the way you're going to start a business in it's not going to be successful and you know what that's going to be okay. You're still going to be. It is and you're going to have another one. That's successful successful great. That doesn't define you right. It's cool and it's neat and we'll high five. You doesn't come from your your in-laws they're celebrating you right It comes from this idea that you think you can outrun change and you can outrun insecurity. And you can't you gotta sit with it and let it be present in feel it in. It's uncomfortable and it's awful and you won't feel like you're enough and then as you talked about you. Go sit with somebody. Who's a professional. Here's the best thing you can do with. The counselor is to tell the truth most people. It's one of the first things in grad school. They teach you is your your clients will lie to you. Go tell the truth. Gay tell the truth. Be honest about your feelings about what you do wanna do what you don't want to do and go somewhere with your husband and y'all sit down and say why are we doing this. What are we want to be where we wanna go. Krisztian are talking about earlier about reverse engineering. What enough looks like what does our after paying for house and after wherever they millionaires. And after what are we doing. Get to the wider. What you're doing the where you wanna be in reverse engineer and then live a life that you love to live right otherwise you can be running in running and running and running and then you're gonna be like well. I guess. I'll just go to space for the weekend. I don't know what else to do right kind. Kinda feels like that. it does it does. And we can't go to space trillion dollars so we just stay in bed and watch netflix right. I think that'd be a great exercise for you to take on You know with your counselor yet era of this idea of discovering what your why is and it may not happen in one session. It may not happen and just one five minute prayer of of being alone but if you spend some time and dig and dig like what makes you light up. What makes you come alive. What gives meaning and purpose to your life can calm and talks about this on his show john baloney talks about this show. I talk about different ways on my show but that is the that is the baseline for everything for every business for every relationship for every everything you do needs to have a purpose. You need to have a y. Or else no matter what you do you're gonna wake up the same sinking feeling like you don't have a purpose that you do. You just need to find him. "Ramsey research that we did ten thousand of them we studied pays off their home and eleven point two years. So i want you to knock this thing out. You have a fabulously large shovel. Your income is amazing. What do y'all do. I'm a nurse practitioner and my husband is a cpa. Both gonna keep working. Yes what's wrong with your current house While we have four small children so we don't have quite enough bedrooms and Just like they're mostly desires. We could we could definitely make it work But it's mostly just you know desires for a little bit extra and that's where we're like you gotta we've been living frugally for so long And now it's like okay. Are we okay with with taking this next step and spending this kind of money or should we use it to benefit in other ways you said equity in your home is your current home. Paid for No we have about two hundred and fifty thousand would your sell that property off when they do this yes had good. Okay yeah then. I i would do this okay. Now the the trick is four kids. You can't call me up and go. Oh we decided. Cut our income in half. Because i'm gonna stay home. Yes yes you gave that right up when you bought this out yes and another we pay a about forty thousand dollars a year in childcare so in about three three or four years that one even be you know on our budget at all so another area that will game. I'm more cash flow to the the key. Part of this equation is just your income to your payment and you can make that work and not just make it work. It shouldn't be any trouble at all. And then you just keep working your baby steps but as you as you find money in your budget you're going to keep working baby steps four. Five six four is fifteen percent of your income into retirement. Five is kids college and sixes all the money. We scrape together from something that any other money. That comes a bonus. Money increases in income. Whatever's all gonna throw it at the house and this how's it going get paid off in sooner than fifteen years and that's the pattern that you want to be on that. That's where all the data points lead us so specifically you would take that to fifty put against this house. Yes or now. We're at five fifty. Yes and i'm looking at that against my three hundred twenty five thousand a year salary. That's easy yeah. That's simple math. Yeah fifteen fifteen year fixed rate and or the payments by your easily do that and so they can reach over. Knock that thing out pretty quick. It just It is a little bit emotional. But also really. They're taking a big chunk of debt. Because i couldn't tell earlier in the call whether she like had two million dollars set aside or something. I couldn't feel it so You know again. The facts will lead you to say this is okay. But the facts. Also say you have to. You have to continue the the trick that you're on you can't change direction on you. Also have the emotion of selling part of your ten acre plot. And that that's your dirt right and yeah. I mean they're willing to do that. I think that's that's pretty. Well decided now. When john baloney gets racial piece of dirt. That's a problem. This is like the counselor will need counselling. I will be hard for me to sell dirt. You are your dirt maniac. Land i am too. I am too i. One of my favorite places on the planet is my big old farm and ain't nothing on it but some grass and rabbits. I remember going out to it the first time. A bunch of spy showcasing went out there. And where does the this. And i thought. Oh this is a happy place me. There's nothing else here. it's nothing else here. Just a big old piece of dirt and somebody needs to hold the rest of the earth together and that piece of dirt does it. So that's why i'm here. That's my my calling. I have a hard time parcel in but again everybody does their thing but You taught me this when you start playing with bigger shovels and you start playing with bigger zeros and it really leaning into those ratios is important. Yeah it is a little bit like you know your trauma. Formula factor your friends. Yeah okay what's really going on. Not what's the emotion right. You know what's really going on as you. Do you do the math. And you know you look at a projection on that and you look at the facts and then you say okay. Why am i scared. Why am i shamed. Why then do i have these negative feelings when all the math indicates i shouldn't do you still if i go look at a new truck i still have a number from the first time i wanted a truck back in ninety seven and i look at new trucks now.

"Dave Ramsey, your host, Dr John Baloney. Ramsey personality is my co host today. Opened phones at Triple 882552 to 5. That's triple 882552 to 5 as we talk about your life, That's why Dr John's here and your money That's why I'm here, and we'll probably both interrupt each other as we go along. It's kind of what we do here. Jamie is with us. Jamie is in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Hi, Jimmy. Welcome to the Ramsey Show. Dave, How are you better than I deserve. What's up? Oh, I wanted to ask you about a little bit of a saddle plan on buying my first home. Um, I have enough cash to buy it. She picks her upper and paid cash without a mortgage. But the problem I have is I need a garage on site. Big enough for one small business. Adults on guy can't afford property with a big garage in the house. So I have to say you're Elvis on better off buying the house, paying cash it and financing put in the building up or the other way around. Mm. Well, I guess it's ah, if it's the same amount of money that you're going into debt. Either way, it's just whichever property you want to end up with right. I guess, but being self employed, it's very difficult to get a mortgage. I was kind of figuring that if I had a property and help the deed to it, it be easier to get a loan for the building. No, no, no, no, no, Be the exact same thing. Because in both cases, if you're struggling to get a mortgage, you're gonna be going to a local bank or other than a traditional mortgage company. So, of course, the other option is to, uh, you know, buy a property to live in and rip your garage somewhere else. Well, the problem. The problem I have with that is I'm I'm sick of ranking. Um And I have Ah, have a young song that I take care of every day. He comes to work with me now, and I'm reeling that realizing that in this post coded world we're gonna within that They're going to cancel school for any time Somebody gets the sniffles, so I figure Better off being prepared to have him there every day with me, right? You know, you understand what I mean. I want to be able to work and live in the same property. So that you're single Dad. No, no, he his mother works full time and I take him to work with me so he doesn't have to go to daycare and stuff like that. So I'm a full time dad. Part time business owner. I guess you could call me You sound like somebody that's on the back end of a really frustrating trying exhausting year. And who was just fed up with the way that the politics and schools and a lesbian run, especially up there on screen. And I would suggest not going into a long term. Dead. 5 10 15 20 year commitment financially over of a current Justin exhaustion in a frustration right now. No, I Agree. I don't know when Uh, Schools are going to normalize, but to project that they're never gonna normalizes is not accurate, right? Um and, uh I don't know exactly what's going to occur, but Is the entire public school system in America going to be App to shut down was sniffles from today forward Now, is it in some places right now? Yes. Is it not in some places right now? Yes, there there. I mean, we're in Middle Tennessee, and it's pretty well open on. They're not freaking out. They freak out more about tornadoes than they do covert right now. And so, um Um, more likely to shut down for that s O. That That's to tell you that it has normalized here. I guess if if you want to call the phrase noise normalized is a good word. I'm not sure it is a good word, but anyway Toe. Doctor John's point, Jamie, I agree. I would not Build a life around this current circumstance. Wouldn't build a dad and home purchase around this current circumstance. Um and but it sounds to me like you just don't want to rent and you're using this is a justification to so I'm buying a house and written a garage. And if kids gotta go to work with a couple times while you rent a garage, I just do that. And, um especially while this is a part time business, Yeah. Yeah. Or you know, by house and have a small mortgage on this Got a garage. I don't care, And you can get that at your local credit union or whatever on if your wife has a full time job and makes an income. And you have a part time business that makes a profit that you pay taxes on properly. You are bankable for a loan. In that case, If you're trying to make zero money on this garage and show that on your taxes because you're taking everything under the table, then you need to do your taxes properly and not take it all under the table and that'll help you get the loan. By the way, but you're also supposed to be paying taxes on their money, or you're really not making any money. You're not making a profit legitimately, in which case you're not bankable. So that's another thing. And oh, in which case you wouldn't need to be running a garage, either, because if you want a garage for a cool hobby Where you're building something or make it something that you like, But you're not making money on it. Exactly. Alex is with us in Sioux Falls. Hey, Alex. Welcome to the Ramsey Show. All right. Thank you. What's up? So I've kind of dug myself a pretty big hole relationship wise and Financially. Mom about 55,000 in debt, not including my mortgage. Yeah. Student loans, credit cards and home equity loan..

How can I help? Yes, we are. Families. Um All of fallen upon like different called medical problems, and my mother in law passed away two years ago. We tried moving my father in law in with us, but he's developed dementia and can stay with us and we weren't sure like how to set up a trust for his grandchildren to protect his assets. Um, so Medicare and Medicaid can Help assist pay for his stay at the nursing home. What if it's even ethical? It's not only unethical. It's illegal. Illegal. Yeah, so it's Z called welfare fraud. Um and so, um When you sign up for government assistance based on being poor, and you're not poor because you had the assets. Yeah, that's unethical. And the federal government has the ability, look back five years and undo any trusts or anything you've done to move. Assets out of his name to quote protect him from Medicare. So here's the thing if he goes to a restaurant and buys dinner He expects to pay for it. When he goes to the nursing home. He should expect to pay for it. Okay, That's it. I wasn't sure like he worked his whole life. And then just in a matter of years, everything will be gone. Three years everything. He'd worked for his entire life, Spahn, and there's nothing but nobody did anything to him. Nobody. Nobody stole from him or anything like that. He's spending his life savings on his Terror that yes, Stella's house to pay for his care for his care. Well, he don't need his house anymore. He's he's spending his money on his care to take care of him. Now, here's how much how much in assets do you think he has? Um, after he sold his home and soldiers vehicle sore everything about 250,000, okay? And how old is he? Seven before and how bad is the dementia? It goes in waves. They'll go two or three weeks will be really good. And then nothing. Weeks works really bad. There's these People chasing him and so on. How long has she been struggling with this? About a year to a half a year since his wife passed two years ago to really progressing rapidly. I'm so sorry you guys are facing this. It's a hard thing to go through. Okay, But thank you. Yeah. So you guys go shopping for a nursing home? And let's let's just let's look at some numbers for a second. I'll actually pull out. I've got some statistics here on my desk on this on average, okay? So okay. The average nursing home stay. Is, um We see here, Savior, every member. What I wear to go where to go. 70% of claims are for in home care 12% of for assisted living 15% for nursing home. No. Uh, two things I want to check on one is I want you to start pricing out. Some in home care has already sold the house. Yeah, I was already going. Okay, so he's going into a nursing home. Okay. Cool. Yeah, He's he's already in one. But we're trying to see how to What we can do better for him and protect his assets. First grandchildren with what you've told me. I am going to project that he's going to have about an average stay. Yes, the average stay nationally is 2.4 years. Okay? It's heartbreaking. It's heartbreaking to turn your Loving relative into a statistic. Okay, but if he if he stays there three years and spends $40,000 a year He's only used up half of his assets. His is 8500 month, so his is going to be that's ridiculous, really expensive. Idiot. You need to get a different nursing home. Okay, look in the other ones that Z double. Yeah, well, that's what I was his assets, So he stays three years. Everything's gone. $240,000. The average nursing home stay in America is 50,000. That's the average Okay. Means this allowed. I mean, somewhere cheaper. Yeah, and yours just double And I had a, um, a relative who was put on hospice and lived three years. So, Yeah, it's a very real possibility. In three years he's doing just he's not doing well. But he's still alive. And, um, yeah, yeah. Lot of money. That's way too expensive man. Yeah, and And so the problem is It's so harmful when you're watching someone that you love that you know, with, especially when you're talking about dementia and so forth. It's just it's heartbreaking, and then you reduce the conversation to a math formula, and that's just really tough. But the truth is, it helps me if I'm in that situation to reduce it to a math formula, because I don't have the panic of running out of money. Right. And so I'm really glad you called on because the main thing you've discovered is he's probably not going to run out of money, but you need to move him. Okay? And you've got to do a psychological 1 80 here, brother. This money is not quote unquote, your grandkids or your Children's assets. This is the money that is going to get him through the last stages of his life. And I'm super grateful that he was in a position to be able to help pay for that. The nursing home is not stealing. They're serving Correct and it stinks. You got your your partner did shining you didn't sign up for the you know, the freaking rich e mean the freakin Ritz.
