"1069 and am 7 40 KCBS. Hey, CBS News time 8 58 50 be John CEO. She is editing the news. With many people turning to vote by mail for the upcoming election. The state is opening up fewer in person polling places this year for Mork, a CBS and Chronicle insider film. A tear spoke with KCBS anchors Patty Rising and Jeff Belle feel awfully tough to kind of predict what the turnout is going to be on Election day itself. Oh, is it? I'll tell you. I was just on the phone earlier today with John Arms, the voting ahead here in San Francisco. And you know, San Francisco is a very active town in terms of getting the vote out such like that. And he says it's already seeing record numbers early. And the question is, is whether this is an early search of people who are just getting there. But balance in because I just really feel the energy and the need to or whether this is going to continue to roll and we're going to see a voter turnout that exceeds the 60% anticipated If it's going to be a really gate crasher, you know, I have never seen a get out the vote drive. As big as the one going on now in the United States all across and it's not because one party with both parties are out there pushing it. It's like everybody radio TV. Everybody is just out there with sage and with news stories talking about, you know, howto boat window vote where to vote and whether or not you're gonna be in line on voting come Election Day. So let's talk about the possibility of lines. You know, I voted in each and every election I've never ever waited in line that lasted more than two minutes. No, you have it. You probably met a very charming and probably elderly person when you went up there, and they had us over you that there's four of those four workers and one of me, that's right. And the afterwards that give you your little sticker to put on thanks to him to give me a sticker. Yes. Well, what we have here in this time is that a couple of things are working to possibly make the long, long lines longer. One is the vote by mail pushing California, which has resulted in fewer polling places. The idea was that we were going to reduce polling places because we do it all by mail, so we have voting centers, and so that's sort of been a trend that's been going on the last couple elections. The other one is it places where you voted in the past? Sometimes they were in school basements or gymnasiums or church basements or senior centers, places that you can't get to these days, places that are going to be closed up. And when you get to whatever voting sinner you are designated to go to to vote on Election day, you're going to be distant 6 ft Apart. Chances are they're still going to chat you up as much as they did before they could treat the combination of the longer line. Phil will be on live again at 7 50 tomorrow morning. Why do you use that word? Well it is. I mean I grew up in new. Flynn must spend a lifetime in on water and everybody knew may living off the ocean written my father. My grandfather McGregor grandfather me and to see people just blatantly disrespecting something that federal and entertainment and just I gave away a life for all these years definitely are bringing me. You see a disconnect between the fact that as you say people would make a living off of this and then they'd they'd be willing to throw the trash in there as well. Yeah for sure sure what happens if talk with hauling this stuff out but if this stuff were to sit on the floor of the ocean what would happen. We'll eventually it'll it'll break down and be distributed through the ocean in form of Mug replacing a car batteries the plastic part of breakdown in probably forty fifty years and that'll spread it through the ocean in micro-plastics then you've got lead left behind loads of it and you got acid getting into the water As regards the tars takes sixty years for standard chartered a breakdown in despair. uh-huh desk just sitting on the surface right getting into almost that's broken down and I was getting into the environment I mean we can't retriever. Then I mean now we need to get the stuff back while seem one big piece because it's not just going to vanish all those pieces of rubber. And we're wondering why we're getting sick ring. How do you drag these things or a tire at the water? Well I started. I used to walk in on the war and I take probably two hundred foot a role in my hand and I jump off the warfare literature. Joe Dave afterward wrote my hand and I swim out night every time I find into all right. Just go on and on with Rope Marie once I got fifteen or twenty dollars toward on that piece role. I toyed rope to The next higher and then I swim back Dan. I get aboard Metro Ball. First of all I tell you the real one truck and go round with the animals and then I get much putting four four wheel drive and read. I'd reverser and I pull the tars oversea war with my truck. That's pretty much how we did it. I saw it sounds like hard work. It is as brutally hard work easier heavy things it is most of these ours ars. You're not getting over. Started warplane right you diving all year. Yes absolutely so how cold water it was definitely cold. It's not going anywhere. Knew Flynn this time of year. NFL calls before he got into question. How do you stay warm? I work hard. I wear lots of clothes and I work really hard when you're underwater so there's times I I'm swimming around if I don't have a role. Oh him yeah. Whatever I'll pick up three or four hours on one arm maybe three or four times on the other arm and I'll be in thirty forty or twenty or whatever the case might be and I could be the two hundred yards away from the wharf? Now I got six or seven cars and I got to try to get back to that war for it. So you're gonNA make builds up heating your body quite good. Looks like Popeye crazy. Man John Arms. If you could see it you love it. Why are you doing this well? I started. Man's furthermore love Ocean Street. I made my family may living at sea and to see all the stuff on bottom all these years nobody doing nothing about it and I'm getting older and if I don't do Sean No Entertainer twenty years and nobody else didn't seem to be interested in cleaning trafficker. Maybe I'd start. bringing awareness Mr describing. What would you hope to accomplish with this? I mean you're doing it. You're doing a lot of work But it's on an individual scale at the end of the day. What would you want to accomplish with this? Well log always bring awareness to this problem to the point where somebody got to get on board with us so that he can no longer turn a blind audit. When I'm finished? I WANNA see ten crews at this all over new Flan and there's lots of trash for everybody and there's lots of people would love to be doing but the fundings easiest reader by needs to get funding to get on goal. How much of a difference do you think you've made so far? I brought awareness to a lot of it but We got a long way to go yet. You're doing a great job and I imagine those waters are cold and it's hard hard work but but it's appreciated. Yeah it's good to talk to you sean. Thank you thank you sean. Bath Athens founder of Clean Harbors Initiative Newfoundland and Labrador to mostly one man diving operation to clean up the harbors of his province. Sean is just one person. There are many projects around the world trying to clean up our waters. One of them is actually being used by the Port Authority in Toronto. It's called the C.. been it was created in Australia. Lia kind of like a trash can that skims the surface of the water and sucks in garbage and micro-plastics. It's shocking when you start looking at the amounts as well as the kinds of things we're finding. This is Chris dickey from Ports Toronto also finding micro-plastics words are down two millimeters in size. The CBN's collect on on average about four kilograms a day. I think we were reaching about four hundred four hundred sixty kilograms a week prosieben. So it's a lot of material. Yeah I'm upset about it but rather than just be upset about it. We gotta do something we've got to act upon it. I think it's something that we all need to combat collectively as as a city. He is a province as human beings to make sure that we're doing the right things. Here Chelsea Rochman Assistant Professor in ecology and evolutionary biology at at the University of Toronto. Her research focuses on plastic waste. And what to do about it and she is a fan of the. I think the CBN's can play a huge role in cleaning up the ocean. And so I mean there are. I'd say three main themes of solutions that we need in the world. One is waste reduction which includes plastic reduction another one is waste management but a third is clean up and the reality is no matter how well we manage the waste. Were always going to have some going out into the ocean so dry which is why people have said in some ways that the CBS might be a bit of a Gimmick mkx. That doesn't actually deal with the real as they say. The root cause of what's happened yes. Some people call these cleanup solutions a band-aid and I would argue. That they're unnecessary bandied. That no matter what you're going to have some form litter and so we need this as a last line of defense to protect the ocean watching what the Stevens Collecting Toronto quite impressed. So this is the kickoff off before this series called the fix which is about how people are trying to tackle the big wicked problems as I was saying earlier that that face us. What's the fix the fix? As I said I think thinks multifold. It's those three things. It's combination of waste management a combination of waste reduction. What's includes plastic reduction but also building into a truly circular economy joining me where we're going moving towards zero waste lifestyle and it's clean up and underneath that under foundation is policies that enable these solutions and also the education awareness that allow for the people to be able to work under those new solutions because change is hard Chelsea Rothman isn't assistant professor in ecology evolutionary biology at the University of Toronto. I bet on the reds every night to win. It never come out before. And he says I bet on. The reds every night to win. So even if you bet on your team that you're managing you can still manipulate a lineup. Of course, I can bring in John Franko, John arms tired. But I'd rather you came in. Then this guy or starting? There was one starting pitcher that he didn't bet on his told. Okay. He wouldn't bet on his own pit, right? Right. Or you could just say we're going to gas out the bullpen. Yeah. I won't bet. Yes. Right. So yeah, I did vet through the same guys that Pete. Well, it's like marijuana laws right now, all of a sudden, you gotta vacate a lot of these sentences because what are you in for marijuana? Right. It's legal now. Yes. In food trucks. Right.
