There are nearly 900 people hospitalized with COVID in Maryland up by about 400 from a month ago, according to Maryland health department data COVID cases make up about 13% of ICU in acute care beds and of a hospital system in Northern Virginia also neared hospital capacity early last month, with cases of COVID and flu on the rise in that area. "One 40, change is a footing Congress, including Arizona senator kyrsten sinema's decision to leave the Democratic Party and become an independent. Our John Aaron talked about this divided and newly elected Congress with Ken Walsh with U.S. news and World Report. Well, in addition to the situation in the Senate where kyrsten sinema, the senator from Arizona has declared she's now an independent and not a Democrat, which would make it more difficult for the Democrats to govern. You also look at the house where a lot of they have a razor thin majority for the Republicans. And you have a situation where the hard liners in the house are resisting electing a speaker. Now that's not a good sign for governing in the House either because the Republicans finally have control and they can't get their act together to decide who's going to lead them. That's another factor. Abortion fights are heating up around the country. There's a piece in The New York Times about that today. And that's further indication of how divided we are and how difficult it will be to get any kind of consensus. Many other examples, but I think what's happening here is that the headwinds are very strong against any kind of a consistent governing period down for the next couple of years. This reflects the divisions in the country, but it's going to really make a big difference in getting much done on the things that are on the people, the public's mind. Right after the election, I spoke to Virginia congressman Jerry Connolly and he said that maybe since there wasn't really this red wave or really any wave one direction or another, it would make it more likely that people could work together. Is there any semblance of that happening? To me, since that midterm and I know that was a common feeling that you just described, but basically it seems to me that people are digging themselves deeper into their trenches. If you look at the house, this is going to be a real war of investigations and oversight into President Biden into Hunter Biden, his son, and to allegations of corruption into the government on members of the cabinet over immigration policy. One thing after another, there is a legitimate oversight function here, but it's also gotten so bitter and so nasty that it's almost like payback politics is happening. The Democrats take after the Republicans when they have control then the Republicans do it and it gets more intense each time. I think that's what's happening. And I think there's so much bitterness in Capitol Hill now. It's hard for me to see people coming to compromise. We did get some of that in the last couple of years. People tend to forget we got the infrastructure Bill through the improvements in healthcare and so on. But looking ahead, I think it's going to be even more difficult to get those kind of compromises now. Ken Walsh with U.S. news and World Report, just ahead, we've learned there will be a new head coach at navy, one

"News on WTO P. Good morning, I'm John Aaron. We have more now on that breaking story out of Capitol Hill this morning. Let's get the very latest from WTO's Mitchell Miller who is on the hill at the scene right now. Standing right at the area where this vehicle attempted to go through a capitol police barricade. This is always up on the weekends. This happened around four this morning, apparently the driver of the vehicle tried to go through the barricade when that didn't happen. The car at some point was engulfed in flames, the man got out of the vehicle for whatever reason started firing randomly, shots up into the air, fortunately no one else around this area was injured. And then the man apparently took his own life. All of this, again, happening just hours ago here at second street and east capitol. This is on the east side of the capitol just about a block away from the front side of the east side of the capitol right now. I am looking at the fire marshal. They are pouring over the area where you can see it's just entirely black where the car was totally engulfed in flames right in front of where these barricades are. There are three barricades that stop vehicles from coming through, as I said, this is normally the barricades are always up on the weekends. I frequently go through this area, so this is an area I'm very familiar with. It's right between the Supreme Court and the Library of Congress, but the good news right now again is that no one else was hurt or injured. Obviously an investigation underway. We understand that U.S. capitol police chief Tom manger is going to hold a briefing, sometime within the next hour. But that's where we are right now, John. Bush there he was the one who actually signed into law, the memorial that's now located in that area where United flight 93 went down. Yeah. You mentioned General Milley, who did come out forcefully and call this what? It was a murderous attack on the innocent. Basically, What else are we expecting? In Pennsylvania this morning? Well, we're going to look back. I think at the heroism of the people that were aboard flight 93 President George W. Bush shortly after 9 11 spoke about them to Congress, and we quickly learned about The actions that they took to basically keep that plane from flying here to Washington and as I've mentioned this morning could have potentially come right down the National Mall where I am right now, actually on the third floor of the capital and could have crashed into the dome. Many in Congress are incredibly concerned about the fact that that actually could have happened. It would have been a huge psychological as well as physical blow to the country and the fact that these people Oh, Just everyday people happening to be on a flight where able to fight and get that plane down is really a tribute to them. Biden signs executive orders addressing the economy
"Biden has turned to executive orders in his first days of office says he looks to address the economic crisis brought on by the pandemic. He's also pursuing a massive coronavirus aid bill Can Walsh White House and political analyst for U. S. News and World Report joined w. T. O. P S John Aaron to break down Biden's first few days in office and some of the past presidents he resembles well particular FDR going back a long way to 1933 when he first became president. He had a huge depression to deal with the worst economic calamity we've ever had, and his philosophy was similar to what Biden seems to be doing action action action. The country wanted the president to do something to act boldly. And you seeing that with President Biden again today with executive orders. They're going to continue indefinitely pushing this $1.9 trillion stimulus bill moving to try many different things to get the economy corrected, but mostly to get the coronavirus under control and to get the vaccines out. That's his first priority right now. And probably should be given how difficult that issue is for people to deal with very quickly on Lyndon Johnson. Of course, he took over after President Kennedy was assassinated. He also wanted to show action himself, particularly in areas of diversity and racial justice with writing is also doing so. I would say those two presidents come to mind and you see a lot of echoes in what Biden is doing when you compare them to Franklin Roosevelt and Lyndon Johnson. The president, of course pitches himself is a compromise or experienced in the Senate. But we're hearing that some Republicans say there's no way they're gonna go for some of the elements and at one point trillion $1.9 trillion.8 bills. So where does this go? I think the thing we have to remember here, of course, is that this is vital opening bid in his attempt to get a lot of this legislation through. He's been around a long time. 36 years in the Senate years as vice president, he is known as a guy who knows how the Congress works. And so I think we have to realize that this is his the start of the neck. Negotiations started the deal making there are not good signs from the Republicans that they'll go along with him. There's a lot of pushback of the same time he's getting the sense from the left on his in his party to push further in government activism, and so on, So it is a difficult line. He's walking here, but I think That there's the potential particularly initially here that he will come to some kind of a compromise. It'll be difficult, but what he's got out there now is sort of the whistle ist. I think when he gets to the real bargaining, I think he's gonna have to borrow back off from a lot of that. But I think it's possible

Trump floated appointing Sidney Powell special counsel on fraud
"President Trump is said to be weighing increasingly desperate steps as he tries to reverse the results of the election there, reportedly, including naming a special counsel to investigate allegations of voter fraud and even imposing martial law. Joining our John Aaron from or was Ken Walsh, White House and political analyst for U. S. News and World Report might be that the title of that movie the year of Living Dangerously I've seen we have a sense of the President Trump really can't give up the idea that he won this election, even though he did not. Joe Biden won quite clearly and that's been confirmed by the Electoral, College and court cases of that the president has had filed have been thrown out. Challenging the results. But I think what's happening here is that there's just the fact that these solutions and President Trump smarter mean considered indicates that he hasn't really gotten past this idea that he could perhaps stay in the White House and overturn the results of the election. What's got a lot of people in Washington anxious is how serious he is about considering these things now. Lot of the reporting indicates that a lot of these ideas such as martial law to rerun the election, using the military having a special counsel named Sidney Powell, who was really conspiracy theorist to investigate voter fraud, things like that, that if he's really considering them, maybe he has some other tricks up his sleeve, more or less to throw a monkey wrench into the into the election process, And that's what has a lot of people concerned how serious he is about this. But even the fact it's being talked about at the White House is quite remarkable. I don't I don't recall anything in 30 years of covering the White House similar to this right is his goal that you have pointed out before. I'm getting this before the Supreme Court just totally out the window. At this point. I think it is. There's still some cases that could get there. But that decision that they issued by the week ago really did set back President Trump's ideas about having Supreme Court side with him. I did want to mention also that January 6th is another important moment because that's when the House and Senate supposed to meet in joint session to consider the electoral college affirmation that Joe Biden one. There's a lot of ways that people could make mischief during that point, and President Trump is calling for massive rallies to put pressure on Congress to overturn the election, So he looks like that will definitely happen again. Quite extraordinary that he's going to these lengths. But that is where we are. And I think that January 6th is probably the next date that people should look at for, um, another challenge to this whole

Afghan government meets with Taliban political chief as Afghanistan peace talks begin
"The Taliban and delegates appointed by the Afghan government have come together for historic talks aimed at ending decades of war and Bahrain has become the latest Arab nation to normalize relations with Israel. W T O PEACE John Aaron talked with Mario Mancuso, global affairs expert and former Pentagon official about how significant the Afghan talks are. I think they're very significant. Obviously, it's not an agreement, and there's a lot of work to do. But when you think of a recent Afghan history where every transfer of power has been at the end of a barrel of a gun The fact that they're deciding to talk. I think it's important and these air talks that are aimed to shape the Afghani political future. And so in that sense, I do think they're historic, but again, lots of difficulties that lie ahead. So what specifically is being talked about things like a ceasefire. So yeah, there's probably three key issues that are on the agenda. First is the one you mentioned a permanent cease fire. And obviously this is critical because the people of Afghanistan have suffered for many, many years and, you know, folks have died and been injured there. But the key point is a framework again for the governance of political governance of Afghanistan for the future of the Taliban, police said. They want an Islamic form of government What that means is unclear. But the tension there is issues of social equality, particularly for women and ethnic minorities. In Afghanistan, you might remember just 20 years ago, right women were not allowed to participate in politics. They weren't allowed to go to school. They weren't even allowed to leave the house without a male relative. And so these kinds of issues this tension and how it's resolved again peacefully in the context of discussions. That's what's critical and the forcing function here. Of course, is that The U. S and its allies are going to pull out. Troops have agreed to pull out troops, frankly as a condition of these peace talks by the spring of 2021. So that's the window in which they have to try to resolve this and those with the tension that they have to try to resolve.
