"For the sweet Today at Great American Ball Park. It will be sunny gray at two and 53.65 e. R. A Against Cardinals right hander Johan Oviedo. Oh, and five pour 50.81 earned run average a sweep. Against the Cardinals, whom the Reds have pretty much handled well this year. Would be absolutely stunning. By the way, today's starting pitchers brought to you by Western and Southern financial group, helping to make Cincinnati the best place to live work and enjoy life and by Richter and Phillips. Voted best jeweler and best place to buy your engagement ring last night. It was a terrific game, and Luis Castillo was absolutely terrific seven innings all out, throwing over 100 pitches. And putting the Reds in a position to win and when they did, and there were some great plays along the way, let's just so center in on one of them. Let's go to the seventh inning Reds up 321. The Cardinals have a runner on first. Dylan Carlson is the batter and he launches a long fly ball to center field. Going back, tracking it down, leaping at the wall to pull it in and prevent a home run that would have tied this game at 33. None other than Shoko Akiyama. He stunned the crowd stunned the Cardinals. And preserve this win for the Cincinnati Reds after the game, Jesse Waker on that play by Akiyama. Incredible..

"Fernando Totti's junior of the San Diego Padres hit another home run. He's at 30. He's followed by Kyle Schwarber, Middletown's favorite son, playing for the Washington Nationals, he stuck on 25. In the American League leading all of major league Baseball with 34 home runs Shohei Otani of the Los Angeles Angels, followed closely by Vladimir Guerrero Jr of the Toronto Blue Jays with 32 Let's go back out to the phone. So we've got Eddie in Green Township, Eddie. It was a big win tonight, Brother. How are we doing? I'm gray, always in a better mood when the Reds win, no doubt. I sleep better. I wake up with a smile on my face. I go to sleep with a smile, and Jesse Winker had a two run tater for your birthday tonight for you know, he did. He did, And a lot of folks on Facebook said Hey, let's celebrate your birthday. With the Reds win. Nothing feels better. Awesome. Yeah. And I really like what your last caller said about blunting. I don't bunching is went out the window nowadays. But in that game against the Matthew Tonight at four, has just trial and I went down and 1st and 2nd no outs of extra innings. They probably win that game. There's a good chance they win that game on a sacrifice fire are basically next guy or something. I think my chances before it struck the outer Brian adult play. That's just a rally killer. He's been pretty awful so far this year on a I like to say that a triple Is to me almost more exciting than a home run because as the guy is rounding the basis is he going to make it to third? The cheers on a triple and then you know, a squeeze play or you're just a bunt. You're right. The place of probably go nuts if they bunt. It's right. It's executed correctly. Yeah, now, sister I don't want I don't want this season to be the season that clear then. With that being said they have one week left to make this bullpen better. The team the way it's instructive right now is not going to catch the Brewers or the padre. Someone or not, you're right. I wanted to make one or two moves for a bullet and help there's gotta be once you go open arms out there on R C. That's not content anymore that the Reds can possibly get. But my Nick Castano's talked about it. The players in the clubhouse are watching their watching management and when a move gets made the confidence level Just shoot skyward for the for the players in that clubhouse, knowing that management cares. I think this team deserves it. They need to show the teams and the forms that they care this season season, they could actually win. I mean, Think of the name display all the injuries. That's really all the injuries. This team still making around. I want to. I want to rumble with these brewers all the way to the to the finish line, man. Wow. Oh, yeah. Imagine, with all these blown season from the issue that would probably be in first place right now. I think they would be. Yeah, Just incredible. You know, you think back to San Diego. You think back to Kansas City A 6 to 1 lead? Oh, yeah, that one hurts the most of the whole year. That hurt the most all off. They blow on that. But I have Bob and Dick listening to your show, and I hope they make some move next week for the rag teams of fans. David Bell. He deserves it. I'm tired of important fingers on him saying it's his fault. It's not his fault. This is the handy good dealt the bullpen. There's nothing he can do. Yeah, Yeah, Eddie. All right. Hey, Appreciate the call, man. Thank you. All right. And I've got Brandon in Indianapolis. Brandon, what's happening? Hey, texture. First of all Happy birthday tomorrow. Thank you so much. It's off to a great start. Amen through. That was nice having those, um, give some your dessert delivered to the studio. Yeah, with a graham cracker crust. They ain't hard to make, but they sure taste good. Yeah. Pineapple cheesecake, man. Gosh, just awesome. Are you going to go to the game for your birthday dinner? Uh, Am fairly busy tomorrow. Yeah, I'll be monitoring the the lovable reds. I definitely will. Well, you know, I I like what everybody else is saying, I hopefully, you know, because you're never in this thing. Hopefully they will Um, you know, make some traits that make sense or can get both and help. It's like you said. I don't know who want Denzel with thing being injured, but And like you said she'll go. Akiyama is going to want some more playing time running. Outstanding catch. That was I mean, phenomenal dessert, you know, but It was just, you know, but you just got to do something about the bullpen. And I think Castano's will be back some sooner than later. You know? Hopefully that wasn't well. One bright spot last night. Tony Santy on was just absolutely phenomenal. He won that game. And he rejuvenated and resurrected the club when they were on their toes. Neatly ticketed. Ready for the morgue last night in the seventh inning. Awesome, Brandon. Thank you so much, man. All right. We've got to take one more break and then come back, Mike. We will get to you when we return the chick stir. It's the Kelsey Chevrolet Extra inning show. We're celebrating the Reds, 5 to 3 victory. The sixth straight win over the ST Louis Cardinals and the Reds go for the sweep tomorrow one 11th pitch Sonny Gray against Johan Oviedo. Oviedo is oh, in five with the 4.81 e R. A Sonny gray at two and five with a 3.65 e R. A Coming up. Kelsey Chevrolet, Extra inning show.

"On, man? How are you this week? Doing well, Coast back in studio for this always feel like a little bit of a different vibe here. Like I said, When you get bad takes, I can be visibly and audibly upset. And when I say something that doesn't make sense, you can basically tell me to go shut the F up like Johann Oviedo told Mikey Stransky this week. Pretty good We should make Don't we are record. In this Thursday morning, July, the eighth the morning after the the Shut the F Up, heard around the world as what they're calling it in the baseball world kind of a crazy game. As far as that was concerned, I always fear Like waking up and opposing team's dugout waking up in opposing team's offense. It's kind of like back in the day and you never see anymore. Manager Just don't get ejected anymore just doesn't happen because they come out of the argue balls and strikes and they just immediately get tossed. Or there's instant replay. So there's no reason to argue anything nowadays, so just kind of ridiculous, But in that moment, the Giants offense hadn't been like blowing up or anything. Jastremski smokes of all 400 ft off the wall for a double, and the other rookie Johan who Oviedo who had a really tough time finding the strike zone. Was like, really? Don't know, beside himself at the fact that maybe the Giants offense we're stealing signs, which my first thought is. I don't really care if they're stealing signs. If they're doing it on the field, you're not using some device to do it totally within the bounds of baseball. As far as I'm concerned, Yeah, I mean the paranoia. According to Mikey Stransky was off the charts because when he was on the mountain or when he was on second base in the first inning, remember Oviedo couldn't find the strike zone. I think he walked to allowed a single gotten a bases loaded No one out situation. Ostrovsky was standing on second base, and he said the Cardinals change signs three times in the first inning. This is a rookie pitcher who's already struggling to find the strike zone. If you're having to change signs three times, it's kind of pathetic. It is kind of pathetic it and there was a couple of times early in the game where you saw Oviedo telling the catcher he was like throwing up to two. Let's go with the second set of signs. Let's go with the first citizen is hard pulling up the car. This is where I wanted to get the Bs card. I Actually, and I'll be honest about this. I've got no issue and I know that people don't like to see it. I got no problem with like Brandon Crawford or Evan Longoria or somebody there holding the card or or a left fielder. I've seen do it a whole bunch saying I saw Jesse Winker earlier this year I was sitting in the bleachers for Reds game and he would look at the car and I thought it was sort of funny because He checked the card, and then he took like four steps to his left. And I'm like, Did we really need the card to tell you to do that? Back in the day? The the bench coach or whoever the outfield coach was would direct you just where to stand. And now they check the cards. It doesn't bother me that a catcher has the quarterback place leave. It doesn't And I know Buster Posey doesn't like it. My point is as a fan visually, that doesn't irritate me. The pictures should not have a card on his person. The pictures should not be out there checking a card. At one point, they go out for a mound visit when it's a 12 count to Brandon Crawford in that ballgame, and Oviedo's like checking a card while he's talking to the catcher. I get you're trying to figure out signs and all this, But this is this is part of the mental game of baseball. A picture needs to be out there on the island by himself, trying to figure this thing out, checking a card in between hitters to change signs to me. That eliminates the point of even counting mound visits. Then what's the point of having these mound visits over policing? To me? It's a really little league move. It's something you see in like travel ball 12 year olds like I can see Murph having cards for his picture. I can see Murph you know, out in the Marine Little League, you know, putting, you know, set in little Johnny to the mound with a card because Johnny's forgetting the signs all the time. When you're Johan Oviedo, and you're in the major leagues and you're using a card come on, and this is not to single out Johan Oviedo. This is to make a greater point about get the Hard off the mound in Major league baseball. It's fine and Little League high school. I would still take exception to beyond that, you know, just get it out of the game when the College World Series I recall a couple of weeks ago, guys had this live the catcher sleeve always been harmed. You can't checking your plate. This is what I'm talking to you. How do you draft a catcher who's known for his game calling when he's checking a card looking to the dugout? Every pitch? Well, I understand, like teaching a guy how to call a game. I understand the catcher sometimes take longer because they have to understand the process of that. I also get Buster Posey. Saying, What divides me or makes him elite relative to a catcher who's maybe borderline is his ability to no hitters, his ability to set up hitters to get through and it bad to manage a line up the third time through when you've got the same starting pitcher out there on the mound. He used to be really evident to me with guys like Tim Lincecum, who would not empty their arsenal the first time through the lineup Now the game was being played differently in 2000 and 89 10, obviously from where it is right now, But you used to see things like okay when I was going to get through the whole first couple of innings first time through the lineup, and he Not going to throw a slider or curveball. He's gonna throw the split finger fastball. He's going to throw the high hard fastball and then second time three. You'd see him start with that. Get it over curveball, and now guys have to look for it. And that was all part of like the the managing of the game of Buster Posey. I thought the ability to call again to get through a perfect game with Matt Cain. The reason he's been behind the plate for so many huge moments like that. You totally eliminate that element of the game. And that mental aspect of the game when the pictures out there with a card in his hat. Yeah, I hate it. I hate every element of it is Terrible get it out of the game. And you do make the good point about Buster Posey and his ability to read hit or something that I learned this week was Buster Posey, more so than other catchers spends the time between be pitcher catching the ball on the mound and actually getting ready to throw the pitch sizing up the hitter in the batter's box, seeing if they've tweaked their foot seeing if they tweet their stance, See if they're holding the bat any differently. He does that more than any other catcher, And you can't do that. If you're holding a card and looking into the dugout, it just it ruins the game. Incredible. Did he say that to you? Or did you? Did you ask him, But at least I was reporting the story about Buster Posey for the All Star game and what it's actually already out on mercury news dot com in this anecdote didn't make the story so great reporter I am Yeah, Carla, clearly an interesting anecdote that you as a baseball fan like and I just totally left. Tell me more about that. You're like, no, There's nothing there. I can't. I didn't put it in the story. So you're not going to be reading it on mercury news dot com Any time soon, But a few people mentioned to me like the way that he studies hitters is very different than the traditional catcher. And very different than the new Age cats Pretty cool, because that's what I was just going to say..

"It just seems like maybe give him through the break and Who knows if he winds up playing in the game, Maybe you get the pinch hit or something in the game rather than catching. I think that would certainly be the Giants. Preference. Um, but, yeah, you could be to be looking at not playing this weekend or and potentially not playing in that game. And it damages the team. I mean, you know the the Casali Trump. God bless him. It's not the same. Um, you know, this is a guy who's just been a vital part. Susan. It's hard to think of the team. Doing this? Well, when you literally say Evan Longoria, Brandon Belt and Buster Posey are out. Those are three gigantic names, and here they are. Yeah, I have thought with every significant injury like okay, This is probably the one. You know that that maybe is the last straw. But they just keep finding a way to keep winning. The depth pieces are tremendous now. When you start losing the depth pieces to LaMonte Wade, you know, leave the other day with a bruised hands are straight hands Strain which has not heard before. I don't know what you know what really was going on there that that apparently happened in a second at that, Um, you know, they can't afford to lose the depth pieces who are being so good filling in for the big, big name, guys so That's the biggest key for them and every team, obviously as health, but really, they have got to start getting some of these guys off the aisle and then keep them off the aisle. Yeah. Okay, well, it's been nutty and they get going and Lamont way to. It certainly is not another one to add. What did you think of the mightiest Rimsky Johan Oviedo stuff because they go to ST Louis next week, and we'll be there. Susan, By the way, Me and Paulie and cops are gonna be there and we are you going to be there? I will be there. Okay, That's it. Wow. Yeah, the real deal. This is it. We're definitely hooking up. We're definitely meeting up. So that's that book. Check that in your put that in your to do list. All right. So, um, tastic? Yeah, I know. Right? It's great news for us, too. So the Oviedo you stretch that was kind of fun. Little Giants Cardinal skirmish. Yeah, it was fun at Oviedo afterwards, Premise said, Like, Oh, a little bit of a misunderstanding. I mean, it was silly, you know, to basically accused of guys feeling time when you've already changed your signs three or four times, and you just pulled out the card out of your pocket to check to see what the signs are. Like. If you don't know what the sides are, I'm guessing that gets Rimsky does not know what the signs are. You know it's a good call. Yeah, yeah. But it's risky. Had fun with it afterwards. He was like, Yeah. Hey, you know what? I wasn't. But if he thinks that great, you know, we want to kind of get in their heads. And he said, listen and entertainment. You know, I'll put on a little bit of a show, so I I love that He had a little bit of fun with it. I think it did kind of get in over his head turned around and yelled him recently setting was a little surprised that that but yes, he copter to maybe playing it up a little bit as he should. And it could, and it could, uh, spill into next week in ST Louis. We'll have some fun following that story. Why not? Let's let's be media people and stoke those fires, you know, so going forward Susan's letter of the Chronicle and then just before I let you go here, the he wrote a nice piece on Gabe Kapler today in the Chronicle. I read it. It was good, and it is Worth discussing. Especially like on a macro level. If they make the playoffs, like the big takeouts on Capitol will be unbelievable. Because Susan he got him one phone call when he left Philadelphia, right, one phone call. This is not a guy in demand. And then you got a lot of criticism and static when he got hired here too. And, Yeah, well, you guys know. Yeah. Hello. Local media was not super on board with a choice. The local fan base was really not on board with a choice. He was controversial, and, uh, Farhaan stuck his neck out. No doubt hiring Gabe Kapler. He has been great. Uh, and one of the things I like that, he said yesterday. Was how much more open minded he is. You know, when he was in Philly, it was a little bit. Uh, you know if this is what I think you know, not quite my way, the highway, but you know if he was set on something, that's so it was going to be, and now she listens to all ideas, and that's you know, Scott Harris said the same thing you know, he's when there were issues. He listened to a wide range of opinions and kind of figure things out made adjustment. That's what a good manager does. Yeah, he it's four, Hunt said, Uh guys who do their second go round can be different and better, And it sounds like he learned from his experience. Everybody was like, No, We don't want to hear that. No and four Hun Just God, man. He's just been. I talked to an executive Susan, who said That he shared the concerns about Kapler. And he said, Well, you know, capital has to be X Bed X amount better than these other guys that Joe Girardi's in the Joe Maddon's who are out there. And for him was like, Yeah, I know that. So it's interesting that, you know. Yeah, yeah, that's true. Look at all those records. Yeah, You know, there's no better place. I think really that Philly for a first shot because it's the worst place. Uh, Carrie Francona had stories about going out to the lock, secured players lot and finding his entire slash with music manager and that was his first job and look what he's done, You know, and that's the that's a trial by fire. You come out stronger. You come out. Hopefully, figure skins, uh, and, uh, you kind of gotta, but I think it's a good It's kind of a good proving ground. You know, that's a tough town. Even if you're winning if you're not waiting Man. Oh, man, I thought the the Sixers just went through. They were the number one seed in all of the Eastern Conference in basketball. Susan and they underperformed and their fans were clobbering them during the postseason. They were just crushing them, booing them off the floor at halftime and stuff. You're right. It's It's a tough town, man. Yeah, well, I mean, except for the static, he got That first week. Everything about him is way more West Coast San Francisco Bay area than Philly. So it's for sure a much better place for regard. Yeah, absolutely. And I'll say this every time during the pandemic. We at the junior giants, uh, you know, we asked for help to do these virtual Clinics and Gabe and Chi Korea and Alice Anakin and Andrew Bailey and all those guys. They all did it at Gabes. He's like, Yeah, guys do this for the junior giants. It was awesome, so I always Be thankful for him for that. So, um And, uh oh, by the way, they have the best record in baseball that absolutely yes, There's that little thing. All right, Susan. Well, at the very least, we'll see you next Friday. And at the very moment at the very most. We'll look forward to your stories in the Chronicle tomorrow, So thanks for coming on. Thank you, Susan. All right. See you next weekend. Okay. Susan Celester. Fun stuff. Fun stuff. Okay, so we got a little production, okay? Cups. So we're going to Dublin, Ireland. Going to Dublin. Freaking Ireland. Polly to talk Euro 20. Let's go. Man Own McDevitt, one of the great second captains, the legendary second captains podcast. That has rocked the nation of Ireland for last 10 years and has been in our studio before indeed and has handed you a study that your kids stole from, they said. Since lost that one. Yeah, he's going to give us the Irish slash euro perspective on Italy Beautiful. Let's go..

"Well, wear them all out, right? We always laugh about that. Right? Well, the nationals kind of did that for you. Last night. They they blew an eight point lead in San Diego. Mike. I got him using one. Finnegan swear over both Hudson and clay all out of the bullpen, And they kind of limp into San Francisco after a brutal loss, How we like it. That's how we like it. Right, Mike. They had an eight. Nothing lead with Sures are on the mountain, right? Yeah. That game was over Those victories that's hung in the standings, man, and you let that thing slide. I guarantee there wasn't a people that they're playing coming from San Diego to San Francisco, So yeah, absolutely. That's how you want to. You want your bullpen down, dedicate up close to five innings. And through a lot of pictures, so and you know what? There was high leverage guys to wasn't like you're throwing in. You know, a couple of your guys that you know that you're not going to see it in leverage spots this weekend, so Yeah, it totally unfolded in a good way. However, it would have been better if they would have beaten the Padres. Yeah, right. Exactly. And the ideal thing. How about this story about this guy? If you can relate to this guy camera, Raina was his name Camarena. You know, I confess I didn't know much about the young man had just been called up from their Triple a affiliate. And he's got to come in and mop up for you. Darvish, who has made a mess means Darvish insurers. Everything is gonna be one of the great duels of the night. But no, uh, Charlie put this guy in number 72. He's from San Diego Cathedral Catholic High School, making his major league debut and Mike they send them up to hit against sharing her with the bases loaded. Got hit your grand Slam. Mike, This is one of the all time stories I mean, pretty awesome for you as an old picture. You must have had a little little smile, huh? Oh, of course, and it totally energized the Padres because they bought into the story too. I mean, that's the beauty of baseball. You don't know where you're going to get your energy. And when it comes in a form of relief for making his first big league at bat hits a grand Slam off, Scherzer. Oh, God! Stop! I mean, come on you You couldn't write that nobody would believe that. And yet it happened. And in regards to, uh Darvish and shares are 13 runs. The two of those guys gave in no sticky stuff. Yeah, maybe because it's that's another thing. I wouldn't believe if you wrote it. Not the way those guys throw. No ridiculous, But, hey, that's baseball. And that's why we love it. Fun stuff a couple of things to talk about before we kind of, you know, get us ready for the weekend is we haven't talked to you since the Wednesday night game. When? When Mikey Stransky And the rookie for the Cardinals. Johan Oviedo had a little back and forth There is some sure Yeah, and, of course, Mike. It's the Giants in the Cardinal's We love seeing those old uniforms entangle wonder if you had a Opinion, get kept looking at a card in his back pocket to it's like, Come on, man. What's going on here? But what do you think of the? Yes, Oviedo chirping. Will massive paranoia the whole series with the Cardinals in regards to science dealing with a guy second. I mean, I bought it looked receipt teams every day. They're out there and they're changing signs. Yeah, okay, that get it, But they were. There was one time they They change signs six times in the first two innings of the game, And they say, Well, that's ridiculous. But that just gives you an idea As to how much paranoid there is. And so hey, if you're if you're a player, you want to try and enhance the paranoia. So you start doing little things so you know, kind of like touching your nose or, like, you know, taking a little shut the two little stutter steps going to your rider, A little stutter Step going to your left. You're looking left their life and there's 1000 different ways You can really Location, or, you know, a sign from second base. And so that's what your strips he was doing. He was just kind of going with the moment. Um did he have the science? Well, maybe, but not 100%. He was getting in that kid's head, though. I mean, you know Oviedo. I mean, he's he's a rookie. And it any. He definitely fell victim to a, uh, A, uh, the veteran messing with him. So you know, did it did it? Affect his concentration. Absolutely it did. But when he starts young at a veteran like that Number one. Everybody in the Giants dugout takes notice and start snuggling up to the front of the of the dugout. Pay attention, and it gets quiet. And the same thing happens over in the Cardinals dugout now And when a rookie does that, Okay, I'm sorry. You can do that. But let's see how you handle it. Does that enhance your performance? Or does it set you back? Did that veteran just get inside your head? Did he get between your ears? How do you handle it? So it was agreed Interesting moment, but They also had later and I think it was just, uh in your strength is next at that. There was a play where he had a ground ball and he was coming to first base and there was Oviedo right there in front of them. And I'm thinking this could happen. And it did end up being a big nothing except extent. Except Jastremski showed. You know that I've been around a bit longer. This kid and I can get his head. Yeah. Which Mike? I wonder, you know, next week, ST Louis and we'll be there to Paul and I are going with Adam Copeland and we'll have some fun. I wondered. So, you know, do Mike Shelton. Gabe Kapler kind of Look at each other across the field next week. Yeah, I remember..

"Step off the mound. Continue to take his time was reaching into his pocket to pick out the card. With all the signs the ST Louis Cardinals were shifting through. It was a mess in the early innings. And a Giants team that wears down opposing pitchers did a very nice job tonight more than 160 pitches seen from this Cardinal staff. In eight plus innings. The Giants will walk And they will slug. They walked eight times and then Darren rough slugged in the eighth inning, and that's why they emerged with a five to win. Of course, seven innings of one room ball from Alex would Sure helped. But Darren Rough, the man was shot. Late in tonight's game That was big. Speaking of home runs before we play Mike as Trump's keys breakdown. Which is fascinating worth your time. What took place at second base tonight. I want to talk a little bit about the home run Derby coming up next week on Monday night. The bracket was announced this evening. Shohei Otani, the one seed, deservedly so Maybe the best athlete to ever play the sport of baseball. I cannot wait to see Shohei Otani, and he's matched up against one soda. Who hit a home run tonight and a 15 5 win for the Nationals at Petco Park. Nationals tryouts Chris Paddock at the San Diego Padres one. Soto has 11 home runs this season. I get that he is one of the faces of this sport. Right now. I get that one. Soto, one of most electric players, Some of my favorite bats from this giant season, where Kevin Gausman against Juan Soto. When Gosman walked him at Nationals Park earlier this year. It was just pure entertainment. When you have 11 home runs. You shouldn't be in the home run Derby. Other matchup on the left side of the bracket. Salvador Perez of the Kansas City Royals 20 plus homers this season for the catcher for the Royals. And Peter Alonso, the reigning home run derby champion, Peter Alonso, sneaky pick to get out of that left side. He's up against a catcher. And Peter Alonso. We know Can win a home run Derby. On the right side of the bracket. To see Joey Gallo. Everyone wants him in a giant uniform during the second half the year against the hometown kid Trevor Story representing the Rockies, one of my favorite traditions in the home run Derby, is having Home player participate. If this home run Derby was an Oracle park this season. Who would represent the Giants? Is it Brandon Crawford with 17 home runs Is that the guy who takes the most impressive impressive batting practice and Alex Dickerson? It's a good question. On the lower right hand portion of the graphic. You have to be a diehard baseball fan to know Matt Olsen because no one outside of the Bay Area watches the Oakland A's. But Matt Olsen, one of the premier hitters in the American League, right now, really happy for him. He's playing MVP caliber ball that he will be in the Derby in Tray Man seen a tremendous story coming back from cancer. To play. And not just play but play very successfully for the Baltimore Orioles this season. Excited about that. Just a little disappointed that we won't get Vladimir Guerrero Jr in the home run Derby, a little disappointed. We won't get Fernando Tattoos Junior in the home run Derby that we won't get Ronald Acuna Jr. All the juniors. Those are the guys I wanted to see alongside Shohei Otani and Peter Alonso, Matt Olsen. Neck, expand the Durbeyfield. Bring it to 10 12 guys and just have a few advanced to the second round. I would love to see more participants in the home run Derby. To me, it would make it a lot of fun. To me. Anyone you can surround and challenge Shohei Otani with it's gonna be good for baseball. I can't wait for what he does next week. Participates in the home run Derby on Monday, Pictures and hits in the All Star Game on Tuesday. We are not worthy, Shohei Otani. That's going to be a great story. It's going to dominate the headlines in Denver and deservedly so. My opinion, and I am a member of the baseball media world. We do not do enough to celebrate what he has done so far this season. The story of the night in San Francisco. The Giants win five to over the ST Louis Cardinals, one of the many stories of the game what took place at second base. Between Mike Yastrzemski and Johan Oviedo, the Cardinals rookie Like I mentioned at the top of the segment. Oviedo furious that Jastremski thought he was stealing signs. Stransky wanted Oviedo to believe he was stealing signs, even though he had no idea what the Cardinals were relaying. Because they changed their signs so frequently. And so Mike Stransky was on the Giants postgame zoom. Oftentimes we played Gabe Kapler's commentary tonight. I want to play Mikey Stransky and have him breakdown. What took place on the basis. Let's cue that up for you. Susan. Hey, Mike. First of all that. What did you think of the job that Alex would did tonight? As phenomenal. Um, you know, we kind of got off to a slow start essentially two days in a row, going down in the top of the first, but, um, he did an unbelievable job of bouncing back and Really pitching lights out, giving us a chance to win, giving the offence chance to do what it does best and put up runs. And, um, he did an incredible job. You know, you just battle had a couple of tough situations and got out of them and kept us off the field defensively as much as possible. I think we were all kind of curious about what was going on there with Oviedo. But it sounds like he told the Cardinals writers said he thought you were stealing scientific. What? What was that? That whole little thing about? Yeah, I think I mean, that's part of the game is the mental side, right? So Any advantage that we can take over. You know, weather teams are paranoid, whether they think we're doing something that we're not. Um it's just a way to hopefully get a distraction off the hitter and to get onto the base runner so they can make their pitches so Um, yeah, I definitely think that He had a lot of intent, thinking that I thought that I was relaying science, which I wasn't I had nothing. They change their signs. Four or five times I had zero clue what was coming. Even when I you know, thought I could have possibly known what was coming..

"And I think this is a Giants team that is very deservedly underrated, especially when you look at the rosters at the Dodgers and the Padres have but There seems to be some sort of chemistry and formula. And maybe this is a front office thing that has worked before, as we've seen. But I I just don't quite understand how they're winning. At the same time. It makes perfect sense. And I think that you can maybe encapsulate Giants baseball and just that one sentence right there, right. No one really knows what's going on. But sometimes it makes sense, so I still don't know what to make of them. But it's very clear to me that they are a viable threat in this division. And I'm sure that both the Dodgers and the Padres are rolling their eyes and who would have thought San Francisco? Much like the rest of us. Who would have thought this Giants team heading it almost into the All Star right would be in first place and and look like a very competent team. Yeah, I think the guy who's got to be most furious about all of this is San Diego Potter's general manager, AJ Preller. Because he goes out he goes out in the winter and gets you Darvish. He gets Joe Musgrove. He makes all sorts of upgrades. 2020 trade deadline more aggressive than just about every general manager. And here his team is 4.5 games behind the Giants, with the All Star break approaching his starting pitchers Blake Snell Yu Darvish, struggling to give them six innings this season, the bullpen that has been really, really good is overworked. So you've also covered the Padres during your time in baseball. You've seen the Dodgers up close and personal over the last few years. Are you of the belief that the giant can continue to challenge atop the division in the N L West? I think if they stay healthy, and I think that's probably a term that is collected throughout baseball, the Giants clearly had the starting pitching and starting pitching as a catalyst for any team, right like it's not rocket science. If you have a good rotation, you're a good team. At the starting pitching, They have the resurgence. I still think the most remarkable thing about this Giants team is that Buster Posey and Brandon Crawford are the ones leading it one more time like it's kind of similar to where the Cardinals are. If the Cardinals for a little bit better, I think we'd be talking more about what Adam Wainwright Yadier Molina have been able to do. Um, but if this giant rotation can keep it up You know, this is such a pitchy pitching heavy sport at this point. We have seen the inconsistencies in the postures rotation. We've seen the injuries and the Dodgers rotation. I think you will ultimately come down to who has the strongest and the most solid starting pitching, and you know, that's again is not really a A bold statement. By any means. It just makes sense. It's most logical way to go one more for you. Before we let you go here. Katie. The Brewers have opened up a six game lead over the Reds in the National League Central, the Cubs in a tailspin. The Cardinals haven't cracked 500. The Pirates are just not relevant at all. Who comes out of this National League Central isn't a foregone conclusion that the Brewers do. And if the N L Central produces a wild card team and surprises the Giants, the Potter's the Potteries and the Dodgers with another challenger, who is that team? I don't think you can count the Cardinals out like you know, like I mentioned there a second half team, but their September their last two weeks of the season they played Brewers, Cubs, Brewers Cubs and those last two series are at Busch Stadium. So if the Cardinals can find ways to keep chipping away, and you know it's going to take the Brewers to go on a little bit of a slide as well. I still think those last two weeks will be an epic showdown. I always joked around too. My friends and all central that covered the team. You know, I hope you guys are all ready to cover game 1 63 because this is where it's headed. Um, I don't think that a wild card is going to come out of any division about the N L West. I'm pretty sure if you want to be in the playoffs as a wild card team, you need to win your division. If you do not play in the analyst, um So I think the car and I think the Cardinals know that too. So I think they're banking all in on making a division push, and they're really putting their stock into those last two weeks because a lot can happen as we know in September. It is a very crazy month. Katie Woo. Would say goodbye for now, but I know you will be on the KNBR airwaves more as this baseball season goes along. We always appreciate your perspective on the Cardinals on the N l Central and on MLB as a whole. Thank you so much for joining us this evening. Kerry always so good talking to alright, more coming up next on camp er, we're late. "Are not so lines one into right field that's going to be a hit. Jastremski hustles over to cut it off or not is going to test him heading for second. Here comes the throw of the tag. He is safe at second base and Goldschmidt scores. It's one Cardinals giants want to take a look very close at second base. But the call was the correct one R and Ottawa's safe Would, though, did a nice job, just the one run allowed, and that's the only run he gave up tonight in seven innings. Alex Wood was outstanding tonight. On the mound for the Giants. Still, though, is an inauspicious start just to walk in a wild pitch and like really, almost like a little blew up. It's a really good pitch. And yet the Cardinals had the one Nothing lead giants. Then, in the bottom of the first inning, they did answer, although they were thinking They needed more leadoff walk drawn by Lamont Way. Junior Mike Ostrovsky drill walk. Wilmer Flores lined base hit to right field bases loaded nobody out to start the game against Johan Oviedo. But Dickerson struck out. Crawford popped out. Jason Foster came up. It was hit by a pitch. It felt like a gift at the time, Stephen Dugger would end up flying out. The Giants got just that one run, but they did tie the game 1 to 1 in the bottom of the second, the Giants would go ahead Lead off double by Kurt Casali. You had a really nice game tonight. Behind the plate. Alex would hit a little chopper to move him to third Lamont Way Junior, though Broken background ball did not get to Sally home from third base with two outs. It was up to Mike Yastrzemski. Here's the one from Oviedo. All Jastremski drives.

"A high drive to left field and you can forget about this one way back over the 3 54 marker and high up into the seats, a two run homer for Coronado the 32nd time he has going deep against the Giants in his career. Swing the line, drive down the right field lie that's going to be a base hit. It rolls toward the corner over the cut it off in the corner is Edmond. He's got a strong arm. Here comes the throw to second. Crawford is in this standing has to throw his way. Off line. Scoring from second is Flores Crawford with his third consecutive hit. And his third R B of the games. The line drive into right field for a base hit Rounding third. He'll come around to score and the strength ski has his third hit of the game and the Giants. Into that gap. Stransky facing flame throwing lefty and ripping one in the right field ended his 64 cardinals swing the ground ball right past third base and down on a be alive. Base hit the fourth ahead of the game for Brandon Crawford, and he is the possible tying run and he's aboard swinging. There's a high drive to left field going back Carlson at the warning track at the wall, he leaps And he makes the catch as he slams into the wall and he comes away still holding on to it. What a catch by Dylan Carlson to end this game. Yeah. Dylan Carlson Kid and help Grove High School only 20 years old prospect, doing his thing doing his hometown team. "Type ball games. And certainly, and we'll talk a little bit about Aaliyah's and and finally starting to find his stroke, but to really good at bats by younger guys in Brendan and Ryan to keep that inning going to get to Alice. Jack, I'm glad you brought that up. But you know, that's the key, right? I got the first two guys out. And then here comes Brandon. Uh, you know, got ahead to and so look for his pitch took that borderline strike on the on the outside corner. Uh, then another ball than a swing through and then a and then ball four and then Mac. Follow that up Chase the breaking ball first pitch. And then fought back through the at bat and laid off another breaking ball 32, So I mean, those were really good at bats and in high pressure moments and that from from two younger players, and that's what you need to do. You got to give yourself a chance with base runners. And then Aaliyah's Who's been You know, one of our warmer hitters. Right, Jack? One of our guys who swinging the bat well, pitcher made a mistake 02, and he popped it. And in regards to those walks leading up to it from your experience, watching the game and certainly being a picture out there, The more you get extended in an inning. Does it increase the potential for making a mistake for sure, Jack is a picture. Two outs. Nobody on 32 count. You're you know you're trying to thought strike, and then you don't and you go. Oh, no. All right, Then. Here comes the next guy. You you get ahead in the count. And you come back to walk. And then here comes the doubt. Right? Here comes the doubt. Knowing now a base ed a blooper. I mean, you start squeezing the ball a little bit differently in those situations, So that's exactly what happened. What about our matchup this evening? Tell us a little bit about Johan Oviedo. Big big right hander Jack physical kid with a good arm. Fastball.

"Not as much steam on the reds at home today. That's because freddie peralta on the mound for the brewers leads me to believe the brewers probably the right side in that game will see what happens in that one. The turtles come down a full run in the braves. Phillies matinee game between ian anderson. And zack wheeler and as i said totals moves of that magnitude have been cashing at a pretty high rate here for this season national saying some money. That's max scherzer against the giants anthony. Desclafani shirts are getting that ace treatment now getting beat up pretty much. Every time he's on the mound and based on what he's done so far pretty hard to argue with that. And then lastly the tigers even though it's tyler alexander in a full-fledged bullpen day for detroit they are taking money today again against the seattle mariners and justice sheffield sheffield with some of those pretty big home road splits as far as pick for tonight took the astros over the red sox. The only thing. I like on tonight's card. Fading ardo rodriguez and the ugly command profile. Boston is twenty third weighted base average over the last two weeks as they've faced better pitching the boston. Offense has really faltered quite a bit. So we'll take the astros here today and bet zach rankings command profile against a pretty bad command profile to this point for edward rodriguez any houston offense. That has pummeled lefties. So far this season preview three serious for the weekend. Not a whole lot of great series coming up this weekend. I don't think but we start with the cardinals in the cubs. Johan oviedo kyle hendricks on friday. John gant to be determined on saturday carlos martinez and zach davies on sunday. Not a lot of great. Starting pitching in this series. That will be sunday night baseball with martinez and davies the cubs. Go on the road and play the mets the cardinals will host the marlins not really a whole lot from a situational standpoint. But one thing. I will stay here is that the cardinals are kind of in a tough way. I mean offensively. They're doing okay. But jack flared is on the i l. The bullpen has not been particularly strong. Starting rotation is not very good without flare eight miles nicholas also out now as well on the cubs are playing pretty well here against some pretty good teams are the cubs may have a little bit more sustainability to them than i thought maybe that bullpen is actually a little bit better. The offense has certainly been a nice surprise being a little bit better this season. I don't know. I think it will see comes money in all three games of this serious here hendrickson. The market's coming on on friday. We'll see the john get fade on saturday. It almost doesn't matter who the cubs are. Starting in that game then carlos martinez looks really really bad to even with zach davies on the mound. I wouldn't be shocked. The season cubs money on sunday. So i do think the cubs take money in all three of these games. If you are interested in betting them they they'd play them quickly with hundreds on friday and we don't know who's pitching saturday at but we know that money will come in against john gant so you'll probably want to get out in front of that line. Move if you can help it. Blue jays in red sox here ross stripling garrett richards stephen matt's nick robbie ray martine perez and a wraparound series. Here that goes to monday with alec minoa. Nato vall di in that last game here on monday. As i mentioned the red sox nearing the bottom five in waiting on base average over the last two weeks as they've faced better teams and better pitching been shut down but i think early on in this series year stripling richards matt's panetta. Both of these have a chance at some runs in this series. Not really big fan of either one of those four pitchers a little bit on robbie ray. Who's getting the sunday start here for toronto. He's just throwing fastballs and guys hitting them. A lot of swings and misses in his starting in chicago had thirteen strikeouts shutting down one of the top lineups in baseball against lefties. Very very impressive. They're martine perez. You know kind of a tough guy to bet on or against but have come around on robbie ray. We'll see what he does in that sunday. Start but as i said. I think friday and saturday games where we could see some runs. Here at fenway park because the red sox hasn't really hit against the astros didn't really hit against the dodgers or anything like that but stripping and mats are are not on the same level. So maybe the boston offense gets healthy a little bit here for this weekend. Lastly mariners in indians. And the reason i talked about this series is because i'm interested to see what the betting markets do with these teams both of these teams with actual records better than where they should be based on bass runs third a win percentage and thackery and win loss. So i want to know how the market handles this because indians will be a big favourite on friday with aaron savelli on the mound in a really big favor on sunday. Which shane bieber. Will there be any seattle buyback to where look seattle's a better offense on the road at home. We all know that but there they are up in detroit. Getting bet against in all three games of that series. I think there's a good chance that we see indians money in all three games of this serious. Maybe not as much on saturday with you say kukuchi and kristen mckenzie but i think indians will get the benefit of the doubt here in this series. So what the wait and see. How big their lines are. But as i said both of these teams looking like negative rushing candidates. As we go forward here so i covered a lot of ground on the show as i always do scheming tripods at gmail.com to get the notes for the betters fox so email me get on the list for that and of course you'll hear another edition of the show coming up here on monday. They'll do.

And that has to feel good, because now you're in a pretty good position coming into today's game with The Cardinals going with the spot starter and Johan Oviedo. So just how important is a win like that, Uh, in this series against this team. It was in the way it happened was really nice. You know? Luis Castillo pitching a good ballgame. Really? Probably. I think we would all agree. Probably the best. Um he's looked like the year. And you know, it's nice. The weather gets warmer. We under the summer months and when we have a long way to go, so for for him to to pitch like that really was exciting for us to see. And you're right. It was a good game It took. It wasn't easy. He got a little exciting at the end, and but we got to win and we come in today with, you know, with another big game in front of us. Sometimes things get away late, and that kind of overshadows the bigger picture, which is as you mentioned the victory, But it did get a little tired at the end. Talk about the decision to go with the little when you did that had to be a tough decision with Kisner coming up. It was, um You know, I saw Heath, Um, getting a little tired. You know, through a lot of pitches faced quite a few hitters, especially that second and he came back out. I do believe he's Um, could have gotten that hit her out. So like you said, it was a tough call. It was really based around the three bedroom minimum by bringing doing in that situation. It left open the possibility to to have police face culture. Schmidt and You know, that would only happen if took out away from us a little bit. Sure enough, it did, And we were able to actually space Goldsmith, which I did feel a lot better about them than having do face him. So that's where it turned out. Training Games are often running and Brian. Always good to visit with you. Howard things hey great Dan. I'm like so many cardinals. Fans are still at home but watching every one of these games and watching not only major leaguers but more excitingly these early games a lot of the young players. Are the prospects get to appear? I think just in the last two games alone. Nine of the pitchers who pitched in the last few days are members of the Kardashian. Top fifty prospects. Yeah that's what makes us so much fun from my perspective. I get the chance to to see these kids up. Close get to visit with them. Watch them play An obviously follow in your book. Which is the top prospect guide of what you see and your team. The CARDINAL NATION DOT COM. I go to it all the time you may or may not hear me quote from it. We still have hard copy books left. And if you want to pdf version you can get the same day. So just headed. The Cardinal Nation in order twenty twenty prospect. Let's jump into some of the guys we've Seen A. I'll tell you the guy that I think has been the most impressive for me. I'm not sure if you agree. But that would be cody. Whitley we're GONNA see this kid in the big leagues aren't we? Yeah I quit cody. Really big league this season in fact you know there are some who think my gosh you know. He could compete for a job coming out of camp and based on limited action. We've seen so far. I mean I struck out the side looking president mid-nineties. Eat The promise. At least not yet on the forty man and he had a meteoric rise in in. Twenty nineteen. I mean the guy started the season in Peoria low class and by the season it's season finished not only was. He was in Memphis but he was in the zone of Fowley the Best Prospect League in a game any pitch very well there as well. So it's hard to imagine a prospect who who went as far as cody. Whitley did during twenty nineteen and again the only issue right now. There's not a spot for him yet. On the forty man roster but when the time comes at the cardinals need a hard throwing right hander. An open they'll find a way to make roster room for Cody Riley. What is it about him that projects him to be potentially a major leaguer even coming out of this camp what is it about mobile offerings The ability to throw strikes and fastball. That's in the mid nineties. And you know he's just look at his numbers. He does walk a lot of guys he's just comes in and gets out. There's a of pitchers that have stood out to me. So Whitley is one. I'm going to go with another one. And that's Johanna Oviedo. And we saw him pitch yesterday and I thought the Empire squeezed him a bit. The line may not represent just how well he pitched but man. This young man is going to be something I. He stood out to me and watching bullpens his presence his body and then what I saw yesterday. It's funny when Oviedo was time. He was part of that. Big Twenty seven twenty sixteen twenty seventeen international class at the Carl spent so much money on. They got penalized for the next two years. And when at the time Oviedo was rumored. Connecticut not rumored but said that was going in you know in the mid to upper nineties and when he joined the cardinals you know when we put the guns on and he was down in the low nineties and was like what happened and it just took him a while to grow into this big massive six foot. Six Body He will continue to improve his career but his control was. It was a challenge. And that's going to be the last piece for him because he made it up to double a last year pitched effectively nat dominating pitched effectively in the AA rotation and Oviedo is not. We're going to see in Saint Louis this year. Probably but he's the guy who if he stays on track on would be one of these guys who might be competing for back inspired the rotation next year. Maybe the most polished of this group of young pitchers Zack Thompson. Like what I've seen at him. Yeah you know. The cardinals made a decision in twenty nineteen to reverse. Their course in recent years was to spend their first round draft pick on a Polish College pitcher that Thomson Left-hander University of Kentucky had a very decorated college career but have a little bit of an injury history which was a question which is probably the only reason he fell to the cardinals at number nineteen. But that Thompson. You know we've seen we've seen him now pitching these games. He not only has a above average fastball. He's got a good curve ball as well and it changed up and so he is a guy who may start the season at Palm Beach. But if he does he won't be there very long he'll be in in double. A. And again will be guys. That probably won't contribute this year. But you know you're talking about a guy who literally this time last year was just getting ready for his junior season in college. It's been a nice start for Thompson and it's by the way it's a unique situation. I think until this year with Thomson the last time that the cardinals had player who was drafted the previous June. Majorly camp in their first camp was Michael Walker. So I mean that tells you the kind of path that Thompson is on. And you know with all the excitement on Mattie liberty offer very good reason. There's no doubt that Thompson is the left hand or the one of those two who probably will contribute that saint..
